It truly has me baffled how they decide what to release.
I’m sure there’s some licensing hullabaloo with games developed at Retro, Gamefreak, Rare, etc, but music for games they solely own shouldn’t be that difficult to get on there. I’m sure it takes some time to come up with the themed playlists for each soundtrack, but it can’t be that hard.
I’m assuming the drip feed is purely artificial to generate a little hype boost every so often (emphasis on “a little” at times; sorry Brain Age). But even this doesn’t explain how they plan to go about adding tracks to existing games. These tracks are now missing from S2’s soundtrack, and S3 is still missing Side Order and Grand Festival. New Horizons also lacks any music from Happy Home Paradise, yet all of the Scarlet/Violet DLC music was available from launch as far as I am aware.
There’s still no precedent so far for “Tracks have been added to the such-and-such soundtrack!” and until there is I really have no idea what the plan is. Whatever the plan is, REMOVING MUSIC should not be part of it!
@fenlix it really would have to be fundamentally different from BOTW. I feel like the whole system would have to be built around range. Just dropping Zelda into BOTW with no weapon would result in a lot of frustrating situations where it feels like you can’t do anything because the enemies got too close (which I’ve also heard is how it feels getting dropped into LTTP as Zelda with no weapon). Though if you put Zelda into BOTW but WITH a weapon, the thought will be, “Well, this could have just been Link.” If she gets another chance in the spotlight, it will have to feel like the game was custom designed for the gameplay styles her character allows.
@Yoshi3 ooh yes, absolutely true. To be completely honest I reread my comment and thought, “man, everything I described would be a whole lot cooler if it was Ganon.”
Edit/P.S.: I was also not trying to call you out specifically. I’m just speaking to the general consensus I’ve heard from people on the internet who don’t like the EOW.
I get it, you guys hate Echoes of Wisdom (I haven’t gotten around to it just yet, but I will be playing it), but I think the rage is blinding you to the possibility of just how cool playable Zelda in a 3D open world would be. The movement would be insane - levitating, walking on water, short range teleportation. There could be a huge arsenal of magic for a variety of situations - ranged attacks, close-up burst options, temporary buffs, sensing enemies or secrets.
But no, instead, “I don’t want playable Zelda because I hate building things!”
Admittedly, I feel the multiverse fatigue as much as the next guy, but I would still be absolutely delighted to get a game with insane multiversal lore that somehow merges all of the timelines into one, linking the rest of the series up with BOTW and TOTK, especially BOTW given that it has multiple references to all three timelines.
Crazy that they had to throw in a little bonus rule just so they could give a free win to Erdtree. “Can’t have Balatro winning, no sir! An indie for GOTY? Don’t be ridiculous.”
@LavenderShroud they get excited to see their opinion get validated on a big stage and then get online to complain about it afterwards when something else wins
Edit: I just remembered. This is a lot like when Splatoon 3 won best shooter. The response wasn’t “Really? Splatoon? I never really thought to try it, but apparently it’s good enough to win an award. I guess I’ll give it a shot.”
Most of what I saw online was “Really? Splatoon? That lame baby game for kids who aren’t allowed to play COD? The Game Awards are so lame now.”
It doesn’t really sway opinions at the end of the day.
This game seems like it is actually technically impressive, but on the surface it’s “the silly kids version of Sony’s graphical showcase for grown-ups that wish they had BOTW.” I’m convinced it was intentional that this version was ported to Switch. “See? Look at that! Switch can only play baby games. Why don’t you go ahead and buy a PS5 Pro so you can play games for grown-ups?”
@Anachronism they really do need it. They have Beginner & Experienced queues, but you get full control over which one you play in and how long you want to stay in it.
I’ve never played the Pokémon TCG so I picked Beginner, but I’ve gotten in quite a few games over this first week. When am I supposed to stop being a beginner? 10 games? 100? 1000? How should I know? I mostly get even matches in Beginner, but sometimes I really kick butt. Should I feel good because I’m getting better or should I feel bad because I just destroyed little Timmy who just tried his first PvP match?
On the other hand, skill based matchmaking may bring me face to face with the reality that I’m really not that good. But the current system of showing how many wins I have and not how many losses makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside.
Not only do I already have a NSO subscription anyway, but I at least have to do the right thing and put my money where my mouth is. I have ALWAYS said I’d pay up if they simply offered a legal way to experience their music, and here we are.
You gotta choose your battles, man. Censorship that makes us miss out on story content or even whole games in the West is very uncool, but this is…not that. You’re kind of making a fool of yourself when you post publicly about your personal desire to bimbofy all the female characters and undress the minor.
Um, ACKtually Splatoon (1) never got a Switch Port! But after Team Past’s smashing performance, I guess we can look forward to the remaster on the next console haha
Everyone who disagrees with this statement seems to forget how dramatically underpowered the Gameboy was compared to the other handhelds available at the time. They had SNES era graphics while the Gameboy didn’t even have a backlight.
As far as home consoles before Wii go, NES had no legitimate competition since Atari was already totally washed, SNES was slightly below its contemporaries graphically, and N64 and GameCube both encountered storage space difficulties with third parties because of their choice to not use standard disks (which proved to be a pretty good anti-piracy measure in the GameCube’s case).
Nintendo has never been about the arms race and they don’t intend to be. Third parties can choose to be on the name-brand of videogame consoles, or they can choose not to. The choice is theirs.
I wouldn’t mind if it ends up being iterative like this, but I still wonder if they’re brewing something crazy different (still a hybrid). I’d still be quite happy with the Switchi, 3DSwitch, 3DSwitch XL, New Switch, and so on, though.
If it truly is just bigger and better, that’s fine. It was never meant to be a pocket console like the GBA SP or the DS Lite. The original Switch fits just fine in my backpack and this new one will too.
@Tober I agree with you, but let’s not forget that a game called “The Plucky Squire” is somehow what everyone is talking about, despite its strangely forgettable title.
@Bunkerneath to actually answer your question in a helpful way (in case you were genuinely wondering), Story Mode was pretty universally panned as a bad adaptation of the Minecraft IP, but seeing this new trailer has sort of put into perspective for a lot of people that it was not as bad as people originally treated it. I remember a similar thing happening with a lot of backlash to Byleth’s character design in Three Houses only for people to have a change of heart after Alear was revealed in Engage.
@Lightsiyd Yes! You pick one of the teams to represent for the weekend and the games you play contribute to that team’s final score. The metrics that determine which team wins are:
Popularity/Number of Votes
Conch Shells Turned In (A currency you get for playing matches, so essentially which team had members playing the most amount of time).
Win Rate in Open (Mode where you can invite friends and choose to stick with the players you just played with in the previous match).
Win Rate in Pro (Mode where you can only play solo and cannot keep the same teammates between matches).
Win Rate in Tricolor (Special Splatfest only mode where all three teams are on the map at the same time, since Splatoon is otherwise always a 4v4).
It reminds me a lot of camp games. People participate and get can get very passionate about their teams depending on the Splatfest topic, but it’s ultimately all in good fun and friendly competition, since members of the winning team do get a slightly better in-game prize when it’s over, but the prize simply for participating is still really valuable in-game.
I saw North America at the top and I thought it was an absolute shoe-in, but then I scrolled down and found out Japan totally blew it out of the water. I feel like that’s gotta at least be in a top 100 box art countdown or something, because that is just gorgeous.
Dragon Quest and Zelda are both at least above average in how they handle their silent protagonists, but Xenoblade X’s player character and Three Houses’ Byleth are NOT how you should do this. It is so jarring having a personality complete with one-liners in battle only for them to stand completely still and say nothing in cutscenes.
This dude’s a total bonehead and should definitely get some serious punishment, but $44 million? Dude’s life is ruined, and maybe he deserves it, but maaaan that’s crazy.
I mean, ARK runs on the Switch in some capacity (I haven’t played ARK), so shouldn’t Palworld theoretically run as well since it’s essentially ARK but worse and with fakémon (I haven’t played Palworld either).
Very Kingdom Hearts of Retro to say “here’s the antagonist you’ve been waiting for; isn’t this super cool, given the character’s history? Wait, what do you mean you’ve never heard of them? Didn’t you play Kingdom Hearts: Stellar Night x Sy: Flux Pillar G?”
(Also, no hate, to be clear. I’ve got played and loved all of Kingdom Hearts and I love Retro Studios with a deep passion.)
@Woodyshoe perhaps a world of direct mechanical sequels to TTYD would be boring, but it really depends how it’s handled. There’s a lot of room for creativity while still remaining true to the battle system. New badges, new partners and enemies with new abilities, new special moves, horizontal equipment upgrades for Mario rather than just vertical ones, new mechanics to accentuate the existing ones (ala Octopath’s SP or Elemental Weaknesses) etc. TTYD has a lot of these kinds of differences when compared to the original (new partners, superguards, significantly more badge and item variety, papercraft abilities, bowser segments, etc.) but it’s still recognizable as overall similar.
I hope TTYD performs well so that Nintendo can see that a lot of people want more games like it, but I also don’t want them to get the wrong idea and think “okay, let’s do everything exactly the same but change the partners and setting.” Innovation is still welcome.
The battle systems in newer games really aren’t all that bad either, but they are undeniably alienating. Sort of like how back in the day, Other M and Federation Force’s departures from the Metroid games we’d come to expect really wouldn’t have struck such a nerve if we hadn’t waited so long for new entries in the series only to get games that share almost no similarities to what we’d come to expect.
@jorel262 I feel like in most instances - rather than using YouTube as long-term storage - they are uploading them a few hours / the day before so that they can premier at the exact time they want rather than having to wait for the upload to finish. I feel like some part of this process was messed up on Nintendo’s end back when they leaked Castlevania in Smash.
I know how crazy prices can get with more colors on custom T-shirts, but maaaan it would have been cool to see shirts with the in-game backgrounds on them.
