Re: Reggie Fils-Aimé Weighs In On 'Switch 2 Welcome Tour' Controversy (Sort Of)

KidSparta

@dew12333 Reggie at least does his own things in tech most of the time rather than claiming “I used to work at Nintendo almost a decade ago. I know exactly what’s going on in there because I’m a super expert that has insider knowledge on all of Nintendo’s secrets. For that reason, I’m going to build my entire YouTube brand around the fact that I no longer work there,” unlike a certain other duo you mentioned.

Re: Hands On: Should 'Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour' Be A Pack-In Game?

KidSparta

@Spider-Kev sites have been reporting that since shortly after the Wii’s release, but also yes, according to Reggie. So he’s either telling the truth, or he’s had everyone fooled for the better part of 20 years - and it’s merely a convenient coincidence that Wii Sports was not included with Wiis in Japan specifically. Like him or not, it’s difficult to argue that he didn’t contribute in this specific instance.

Re: Huh, The Pokémon Company's Statement On TCG Shortages Sure Looks Familiar

KidSparta

I’ve never collected a physical TCG before - so let me know if there’s some angle to this idea that makes it not work - but couldn’t they do a print-per-order sort of thing like online t-shirt/merch storefronts usually do? If you can’t find it in stock in person after the release, they could sort of keep up with demand by allowing you to order a pack that will be delivered after the next batch of prints (which would match the amount of packs ordered in this manner + whatever retailers order). That 2-6 week wait would certainly be disappointing if you wanted a couple of packs on launch day, but it seems better than the alternative of not getting it at all because the only guy that will sell it to you wants $40 per pack (and that’s just for the ones he’s already x-rayed to make sure nothing of interest was inside).

Re: Pokémon Almost Became A "Gritty" Baseball-Themed RPG In The West

“Randy Red Sox is ready to climb his way to the top of the Mascot Baseball League, but his bully, Barry Blue Jay, is doing everything he can to stop him! He’ll have to catch, battle, and trade all the mascots in the league to make his way to the top and cement himself as the greatest baseball player in all of Canton!”

Re: Best Wario Games Of All Time

KidSparta

I personally feel that Wario World’s short length is precisely the reason I feel good about recommending it. The gameplay can get repetitive, but unlike a lot of games with that same problem, it’s hard to get tired of gameplay that you’ll only be repeating for ~5 hours. The boss variety, interesting level layouts, and dedicated platforming zones all break up the, in my opinion, rather good even if repetitive beat-em-up style gameplay. I would not feel this same way if it was a 30 hour game with the same reskinned enemies in each level, but for what it is, it’s a fun little game to sit down and get through on a Saturday. Admittedly, though, if you want an excellent short GameCube game, you could just stick with Luigi’s Mansion…

Re: Advance Wars-Style Game 'Warside' Blasts Onto Switch Early Next Year

KidSparta

Okay, the update to this article gives me a smidge of hope this isn’t just a knockoff but something with some actual passion put into it. If all you want is profit from Advance Wars nostalgia, why bother delaying it? Just release it unfinished if you don’t really care. A delay makes me feel better about it and more interested in checking it out.

Re: Talking Point: What Do We Actually Want From 'Mario Kart 9'?

KidSparta

@rjejr I agree with this point of view, but if they handle it the way they handled MK8D I think it will feel just fine. The game felt complete already, making the paid content feel like a huge bonus rather than a requirement to make the game good. If they make a great game and then decide that they want to make it even better later on, that’s all good with me. Intentionally making an unfinished game and then paywalling the rest of it obviously sucks, though.

Free content cycles could work and actually be really fun in Mario Kart (I friggen love Splatoon), but I really hope they learned their lesson from Battle League. That game was already rather bad compared to Charged and even the original, and to this day it’s still bad but now you can play as Diddy Kong. Splatoon 1 really became something magical, but its launch content was also abysmal. Update cycles / seasons sound really fun to for Mario Kart now that you mention it, but I hope they don’t launch a game with nothing to do. “Trust us, it’s going to be really fun in a year!”

Re: Talking Point: What Do We Actually Want From 'Mario Kart 9'?

KidSparta

Maybe this makes me a little mean-spirited, but I want more than any other feature for them to bring back the shorter invincibility after being hit that was basically a staple of the series before MK8. The current way invincibility is handled makes moments like that Get Mario Karted clip with Daisy nearly impossible, and on top of that you have cool but dumb strategies where good players will hit themselves in order to save time that they would lose getting hit by something else. To be clear, I don’t mind good old fashioned mechanical depth, but I believe a good game is fun for the dedicated and the casual players, and I think the current, longer invincibility makes it less fun in casual settings. For those chill sessions with friends, it’s fun to not take it too seriously and have a good laugh / be a good sport about getting hit by four items in a row and going from first to tenth.

Re: Random: Metroid Prime 4 'OG' Amazon Pre-Orders Are Being Cancelled

KidSparta

“It’s because it’s moving to Switch 2 obviously!”

No. It could release on both, but it will definitely release on Switch at least, even if the Switch release is heavily downgraded compared to the next-gen version of the game.

They have specifically stated that BOTW released on WiiU because it had been promised for so long, and they did not want to be responsible for a scenario in which someone bought a WiiU specifically to play “the new Zelda with laser arrows and robots” only to find out that the game would not be releasing for the platform it was originally announced for. This even meant that certain features that the Switch could theoretically handle were not implemented into the game if the WiiU couldn’t handle it, like TOTK’s huge cave systems on the surface. MP4 will be given the same treatment, though I wouldn’t mind graphical and/or performance improvements over the Switch version for the next-gen release.

One of the first major Switch games ever announced WILL be a Switch game, whatever else it may be in addition to that.

Re: Best Of 2024: The Company You Can Pay To X-Ray Unopened Pokémon Card Packs Speaks Out

KidSparta

@nukatha Absolutely, but we can’t underestimate how much of a disadvantage that can be. I was really into Android Netrunner before it was out of print, and their approach was very refreshing. Every new set came in a big box that had every card (and multiple copies at that) for like 40ish USD. Way, way, more consumer friendly than random booster packs, but also way less profitable and difficult to sustain unless there’s insane interest in the game.
Very much the same dilemma we have with FTP in video games. If you’re an indie developer with an ambitious passion project, sell it on digital storefronts for $10-$20, but if you’re trying to stack as much cash as possible, go FTP gacha.
Still, one can hope this whole x-ray issue blows up so big that interest in booster packs wanes and they are no longer the most profitable approach. I could live with that, even if it means that little dopamine hit from opening packs is lost to time.
