Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (April 29th)

Just finished Chained Echoes and am currently enjoying the heck out of Advance Wars.

Focusing on Future Redeemed and Advance Wars this weekend but also a bit of Splatoon 3 to pick a side for the Splatfest.

So I have a dilemma this weekend… I have finished off all massive games in preparation for Zelda. Got the two game vouchers, one is being used to preorder Zelda, and I need a game to tide me over for the next two weeks. I am considering Advance Wars, but whatever game I get will be dropped from 12 May. So I don’t want anything that would require a massive time investment. Any recommendations greatly appreciated!

Breath of the Wild! I started again from scratch a month or two again. I've completed the main story and all the DLC. I'm just working through the shrines now. Only 27 to go.

Wrapped up Final Fantasy 10, and have since moved on to FF10-2. It’s uh….certainly something so far. On one hand, I think the open-ended aspect of it is nice. Being able to explore around Spira and check in on the local going-ons is a great way to world build. There’s a surprising amount of thought put into it considering how much the original only told what was absolutely necessary for the plot.

Now on the other hand…I just don’t think I like anything else. The main cast doesn’t really have any chemistry so far. The supporting cast on the ship is annoying. The OST is terrible(that pop song at the beginning was good though). The battle system feels frantic, but somehow lacks any real stakes. I’m also not a fan of enemy types carrying over into different areas. FF8 did the same thing, and it just feels lazy. I’m gonna try to push through, but I might just drop it in a few days if it doesn’t get any better.

Quake, finally! 3 levels in so far.
Also a run or two in Hades and playing Civ 6 but on pc. I hardly ever play games on pc but I picked it up for £3.50 on cd keys as I fancied trying it on the bigger screen. I love playing it on Switch but it can get a bit frustrating how much scrolling around you have to do.

Oh and I might play a bit of splatoon 3 if I get chance, it’s been a while

@Picola-Wicola I have no idea which games you own or what youre into but Bayo 3 was a lot of fun for around 20hrs. Metroid remake or Dread is also a good choice. Astral Chain if you havent played it (around 40hrs).
Personally, when Im in between games I just play Smash Bros.

I’m playing Bowser’s Fury for the first time and I’ve got to say. It’s really very, very good. In preparation for Tears of the Kingdom, I’m also messing about with Breath of the Wild once again in order to reacclimatise myself in that wonderful open-world Hyrule.

I started up Monster Hunter World earlier this week, and it’s safe to say I am addicted. So that, and maybe some Minecraft and Madden.

Waiting for my Tears of the kingdom OLED and Pro Controller.

On PS5 i will be playing some more of the awesome God of war Ragnarok, currently 11 hours in and exploring Vanaheim, so many side quests on this map. I have also just bought the new Project zero and Robotics Note Elite from the Golden week sale.

On Switch I will be playing Bayonetta Origins and Harvestella, I will also be jumping back onto Fire Emblem Engage to start the DLC which I'm quite looking forward to.

There are parts that are just breathtaking and you can do so much stuff. It really is an epic and immersive experience.

I'm hunting relics in Metroid Prime. I never got this far back on the Gamecube, so it's a brand new experience for me.

I'm also trying out the two new Evercade cartridges that released yesterday.

And I might give SoulCalibur 2 a spin pre-TOTK

And when I finish I'll be sure to jump back into FE Engage which I started playing again before the DLC dropped as it got caught with many other releases from earlier in the year like Persona 4 Golden, Like A Dragon Ishin and Octopath Traveler II

I’m intending to finally take down Age Of Calamity; I already did a reasonably in-depth second playthrough of BotW recently, thought I’d take in the narrative of Hyrule Warriors at last and get that trilogy experience with TotK.

Just finished Super Daryl Deluxe on Switch, a great Metroidvania, highly recommended.
Just started Out Buddies DX also on Switch and bout to start Detroit Become Human on my PS4.

Long tangent before getting to the actual playing:

I've had a bit of an unlucky patch with games where what I've played hasn't really impressed me. For example, I started playing Dredge and all I can say is that game is either massively overhyped, or it just didn't click with me, it didn't scare me at all, it was just frustrating. Dredging an item for a quest or catching an undiscovered fish only for you to lose it when (insert totally un-scary fish monster here) comes and wrecks your boat just grated on me so much. I was hoping for chill fishing and deeply unsettling gameplay, I didn't think it would be a survival-lite kinda game.
I also tried Disney Magical World 2 and I thought it would play like a pre-Dreamlight valley but honestly it felt like it was for literal babies and trust me I am a complete (wo)man child. I also loved FF 1 but hated FF2 so that left me feeling a bit sour. Other disappointments this year include Ryza 3, Chaos;Head, Labyrinth of Zangetsu, Valthrian arc, I'm sure there are loads more as well but when I play lots of stinkers it really makes me lose faith in the purchases I have made and get a little down honestly, despite it being a first world problem. I don't have any other hobbies besides gaming (I don't even watch TV on my own) so I just kinda sit there with my own head in my free time and I put so much pressure on myself to make the right choice when I'm picking what to play... Anyway...

What I finally decided on playing was Persona 4 Golden I loved the other two games so that was an incredibly safe bet for me and it seems like I made the right call. That loop between dungeons and free time just can't be replicated, it was slow to start but it's good so far, though the characters are grating on me in this game more than usual, Teddy and Chie in particular are so annoying both in voice and personality that I can't decide if I should change the voices to Japanese even though I usually play with English just because of the immersion factor. I do have this gut feeling that I will like it a lot but it will be my least favorite out of the 3. I just loved P3P as well, it was so edgy and the 2010s emo in me was having a field day with that game.

But yeah hope everyone else had a bit more luck with games than me xD

After just finishing, and totally loving, the original SteamWorld Dig, I’ll be starting SteamWorld Dig 2 on 3DS. Both were last minute purchases before the eShop closed.

I just upgraded to a Switch OLED this week, so I've spent the remainder of the week redownloading all of my games. It was only last night that I got to dive into Splatoon 3 and see those awesome bright colours at work. I'll probably play more of it this weekend, along with some more Metroid Dread, which I've had an amazing time with so far.

League of Legends: Mageseeker and Road 96: Mile 0, all on Switch.

Finished Resident Evil 4 on Ps5 a little over a week ago and I figured I'd try to play either Engage or Prime remastered before Zelda drops.
I tried Prime but to my surprise I struggled to get into it despite loving the 2D games. I think I'll give it another go one day but I've dropped it for now. Too be honest that's fine with me, Zelda is the game I really wanna play so I guess I'll just give gaming a quick break, minus the upcoming splatfest of course.

I gotta get caught up in the latest flagship event in Genshin Impact, for one. But once that happens, I'll probably fire up my Wii U and play Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. I already beat Shantae and the Pirate's Curse yesterday. Otherwise, I'm going to be working on getting my new OLED Switch set up.

After finishing ACII (from the Ezio Collection) I’ve dipped back into BOTW.

I’ve completed it ages ago, but I want to get used to handling Link before heading into TotK.

I'm gonna play MegaMan Battle Network Legacy Collection. I made it to MMBN3 White, after beating BubbleMan. Either that or Mario & Luigi on the NSO GBA app, while doing laundry.

Hoping to finish Future Redeemed with enough time to spare to also make significant headway on Live A Live.

Finished Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin this week and really, really enjoyed it... more than I thought I would. Still making my way through Ghost of Tsushima on PS4. And my partner and I will start Persona 5 Royal on Switch tomorrow evening as we're heading to Japan on Wednesday and we thought it would be cool to play Persona 5 together whilst we're actually physically in Tokyo!

Midway through Trails to Azure, it's so far delivered on the over-the-top plotline and melodrama that I came for. About to travel for work so I'm trying to get some time in when I can.

Eyeballing The Stanley Parable on sale in the eshop as a shorter change up from the usual bimonthly JRPG.

Also today me and my brothers nephews etc have gaming weekend, we will play lots of retro games also.

Ok, so this weekend will be a mad dash of activities and commitments with little time to play anything. My daughter is starring in her middle school play! 🤩

But this week I’ll be home from work so there will be opportunity to play quite a bit.
It’s good timing, too, because while I’ve been busy trying somehow to wrest a happy ending from the evil little fishies of DREDGE, a confluence of sales and preorders dropped a bunch of games in my mailbox. Mega Man Battle Network, Anno Mutationem, FE Warriors: Three Hopes, Super Robot Taisen 30, and a PC Engine Mini are all vying for time, but I think FF Pixel Remaster Collection or Y’s Memoire: Oath in Felghana are most likely to win (AKA get dropped when TOTK arrives like Godzilla)! 😅

I’ll be playing Oracle of Ages, hope to finish that game before Tears of the Kingdom. Finished Oracle of Seasons two weeks ago. I think TotK will borrow a lot of influence in the season and/or time portal stuff the oracle games are known for. I think we’ll be hopping through the ages in TotK

I’m loving to see where that mechanic originates from.

I think it is finally time to finish the final DLC dungeon in Breath of the Wild and also see the story through to completion in Age of Calamity. I have so many games that I'm trying to juggle that I told myself Tears of the Kingdom would have to wait, but realistically, they are all getting dropped come 12th May!

A few days ago I downloaded the Harvestella demo (on a whim). By the time I finished it yesterday I was hooked! Luckily for me, the full game went on a 50% sale yesterday (at least in the US). So there's my weekend game plan. I may also play a little Splatoon 3 as well.

I'm hoping to polish off Minish Cap this weekend (at the final boss), then looking at the backlog, I think I'm going to try finish Fusion (as far as Nightmare) or Dread (think I was on my way to fight Z-57). Maybe get both done before TOTK hits. When you can only steal a few hours gaming a week, you've got to be selective.

Splatoon 3 to level up a bit ahead of the upcoming Splatfest, and Uncharted 3 Remastered on the PS4.

Addicted to the Xeno 3 DLC so that'll be me covered 😂 saying that, I'm still going strong on Harvestella

Big streak of relative free time influx is coming, which means increased amounts of time with PS4 (from the usuals like FFXV, Horizon, Kingdom Hearts and NFS Rivals to possible other stuff like Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Scarlet Nexus and MotorStorm Apocalypse) and the laptop (FFXIII, RE2, GTA 4, Witcher, Just Cause 2, Torchlight, possibly even some emulated Burnout and Xenosaga... you name it), so Switch will gather dust for the next few days........ yeah, RIGHT.😜 As always, there's an even bigger amount of itches waiting to be scratched - the regulars like Xenoblade and GTA games, crafting adventures from RF5 and Portia to DQB and Terraria (and then there's the recently started Forager which can feel like the Civilization of its genre if you know what I mean😅), shooters like Bioshock 2 and Borderlands 2, racers like Gas Guzzlers and Grid Autosport, horrors like RE4 and The Coma, metroidvanias from Rabi-Ribi and Catmaze to Dust and Bloodstained, roguelikes from Isaac and Little Noah to Crown Trick and Tangledeep, actventures like BotW and Immortals... and don't get me started on all the JRPG sessions fancied besides the aforementioned ones, be it the more recent stuff like CrossCode, CrisTales and Nocturne, the frequented ones like DerQ, Fuga, Mary Skelter 2 and FFXII or the older but still shamelessly ongoing playthroughs like TMS, TWEWY and WoFF. And THEN there are a few more recruits eager to contribute to the Ambition Vault of Zero Moderation on various genre fronts - Toem, Giraffe and Annika, Gotta Protectors, Axiom Verge... plus the estimated 1270th addition to my Switch library, Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song. Years after wrapping up "Final Fantasy Legend" 3, it is damn high time to move this franchise binge forward, too.

All of the above can't possibly leave any room for more on the remaining platforms, at least within the timeframe these posts and comments are dedicated to, but how often does that stop me? From Gravity Rush, God Eater, VLR, Eternia, Dissidia 012, Blue Reflection and Type-0 on the Vitas to Fantasy Life, Endless Frontier, Luigi's Mansion and possibly Yokai Watch on 2DS (NewXL with the many usual playthroughs like Fire Emblem Echoes and Etrian Odyssey Untold is taking a timeout until the battery's estimated June arrival - free shipping has its tradeoffs, and I'm glad I still have the means to import stuff like that for keeping the old gal's flame going at all)... plan big or not at all! As with all such bloated lists, fulfilling any fraction of these whims guarantees a rewarding and protein-rich gamer experience.😄

This weekend I’m playing Dead Island 2. The game is simply dumb fun. Sometimes, I’d rather play a solid 15-20hr linear experience that doesn’t take itself too seriously instead of an emotionally gripping narrative driven game, or a long winded RPG. I’m having a lot of fun with the game, and I find the flesh system quite grotesque and impressive all at once. I’m really looking forward to finishing this one.

I do want to play Star Wars Jedi: Survivor but with Redfall releasing soon, I don’t want to juggle too many games all at once. I’ll probably hold off until mid-summer or so. There are just too many games I’m interested in that are releasing so soon together.

As for my other hobby - I’ve read a few more graphic novels and comics. My list includes:

Xenoblade torna, sekiro! And xenoblade DE, xenoblade is crazy! I’m going to love it so much!

I was supposed to either finish Cuphead or Hollow Knight or just play Smash before Zelda TOTK but Xenoblade 3 ruined those plans. And I couldn't be more happier! Just hope I do actually finish it in time, internally debating if I want to charge to the ending or slow it down and finish all the side quests before the finale. I just wish there was a physical for this expansion, I'd double dip.

Continuing the journey through Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Seems longer than I initially thought it would be.

Unfortunately, I probably won’t be able to play anything again this weekend, as I’ve just been way too busy lately. I’ve mostly been just thinking about how excited I am to play Zelda in less than 2 weeks!

@JustMonika well, anime has gone "portable" since way back in my student years (or possibly earlier on GBA?), so that's not a very daunting task. But while Vita has me covered here, I'd definitely be in the market for the first BR. As well as the first Nights of Azure since neither Remote Play nor the PC version are ideal for a JRPG like this. I eagerly grabbed a translation patch for the native Vita port alongside Blue Reflection's back in 2021, but its lack of item and Servan info translations immediately soured me off. Sigh, at least we're lucky to already have the respective sequels on Switch.

It's a Pokemon weekend. Not only due to the Swinub Community Day Classic in Pokemon Go (Been wanting the little green pig for ages), but I've decided it's also time to start a project I've put off for too long: moving my collection favorites from Gens III through VII into Pokemon Bank. It's now free, but we don't know how long the servers will be up after the eShop closure. I hope to eventually set up and migrate them into Pokemon Home. I figured I'd use this downtime before TotK drops. Not sure when it'll happen otherwise.

In addition, when I'm not playing the annoying yet necessary games of Adulting and Spring Cleaning this weekend, I'll likely dive into more Super Mario Galaxy via Super Mario 3D All-Stars on Switch (80+ Power Stars). Not sure I'll get to much else.

Finally, after 2.5 months, I've finished Dragon Quest VII! Great game, not my favorite DQ, but worth it for series fans.

Future Redeemed for me, only 10 hours in but it’s absolutely amazing so far!

Persona 3 Portable tonight. Will probably also dip into Splatoon 3 and Advance Wars as well. Maybe a bit of Future Redeemed as well.

For me is Final Fantasy VI. I am on the world of ruin side of things so I hope to finish it before Zelda in two weeks. FFVI is still a masterpiece and the pixel remaster really does the game justice. Happy gaming

I ended up temporarily dropping everything else to play Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed. I'm currently on chapter 4 and I am addicted! So many questions are being answered! I made a big push to finish my all my work before the weekend just so I can spend the weekend playing this 😂

Metroid Prime Remastered, getting towards the end. I had this game for the GameCube back in the day and didn’t get that far into it. I have enjoyed playing it again and it is a great 3D translation of Metroid, but I still don’t like it nearly as much as Metroid Dread though. Probably because I am not fond of FPS, so those elements are less enjoyable.

Also, maybe some Fire Emblem Awakening which I have also been playing for the first time.

I have some moving to do. We’ve got new floors so we have furniture tightly arranged throughout the house. After all the moving and cursing, I’m hoping to settle down and delve deeper into advanced wars and Megaman battle network collections. I’ve barely had time with either but have enjoyed them. I’m sort of in a Tetris move oddly enough, moving makes me a master of compartmentalization.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss (Vita) - Going after Chase's grandpa now.

Jetpack Joyride (Windows Phone) - Still enjoying this in between rounds of Nintendo 64 multiplayer with the kids.

Breath of the Wild. I'm helping my kids with their files. This game just keeps on giving.

Finally done with No More Heroes (on the Wii). What a disappointment. Guess I should have played it 15 years ago. Started No More Heroes 2 (on the Wii as well), seems a bit better than the first, but still not great. Hope number 3 will improve a bit more... and on the Switch, I've just started Ghostrunner. Died 89 times in 23 mins through the first level alone! Wish me luck ...

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been a regular part of the rotation since I got the Switch, so definitely more of that. And still on my second playthrough of Metroid Prime Remastered.

On PS5 it's Resident Evil 4 remake.

@Picola-Wicola I'll suggest Hades as it is a great game, and it can easily be picked up again later down the line.

Having finished up High on Life Thursday. I'm playing The Last Case of Benedict Fox which is a metroidvania on xbox. It's a little clunky so far, so I'm hoping to get some new abilities to make the character more agile. There's also not a ton of explaining which feels reminiscent of old nintendo games. I somehow got the double jump mid way through playing last night and I have no clue how I got it 🤷‍♂️.

On switch, I'm playing Advance Wars 1 from the reboot camp. It's ok, not really knocking my socks off. I find it more frustrating to complete missions than I thought I would. I'll continue on, but I've found myself more of an FE guy or even mario + rabbids.

@NintendoByNature How is High on Life because I've heard very mixed things about it but I'm still quite curious to try it.

@RainbowStarFlower I felt the same way before I tried it. Purexbox gave it a 4/10 which blows my mind. Steam had it at 9/10 user reviews and so did the Xbox store. One of my favorite games this year and I'm not into the fps genre any longer. As long as you're not easily offended by the potty humor, it's such an amazing game. I guess go in not knowing much, don't have expectations, and see if you like it. I played on GP so it was a low risk/high reward for me. The characters are so lovable too.

I said earlier I wouldn't play this until after I'm done with Zelda but ended up playing it day one anyways. Just entered the first town. It feels great to be back.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
8 shrines and 2 memories left to find before I go and finish the game. I've had the shrine indicator off for the entire game but turned it on once I had no shrine quests or marked shrines on my map left. At that point, I had 10 left to find. The last one I visited was really well hidden. It would've taken me ages to find that, unless there was a quest for it I missed.

Pokémon Silver
Picked my Japanese copy of Silver from the shelf yesterday and started a new save file. I'm not used to kana only text but it's certainly easier to read than it was when I last played it 2 years ago.

This generation of Pokémon is so nostalgic. It's packed with great memories. I can't help but smile at the smallest details. The music is so good too. Still one of my favorite games of all time, if not the absolute favorite.

The game shows its age though. Movepools are way too limited. Most Pokémon don't learn good moves until you've already beaten the first half of the game, that is if they learn any good moves in the first place. I never liked how you can't catch certain new Pokémon until you've entered Kanto. Couple of them are in the final area of the game too. You never get to use them because there's nothing left to do at that point, storywise.

Harvestella is massively underrated. I paid full price when it released and don't regret it. It just ticked so many boxes for me: great story, non-repetitive npc conversations, good battles, interesting main characters.

Trying, and failing often, at Salmon Run. I'm playing Mega Picross for the first time in P7. Which is great for night time outdoor porch sits while I listen for owls. I'm trying to fit in Cereza but I started it with my children and it's hard to get the time where we can all play. It's unfair to go without them now D:

Also been getting into playing Super Mario Party. I never really did the online thing and the giant gameboard for the gem.

And I'm trying the new F2P shuffleboard game thing. The players are a little small.

Just finished off the second Bishop in Cult of the Lamb. This game, though fun, is starting to cause me a lot of stress. To be honest, it’s hard to jump back into my play through knowing that as soon as I open the game back up I’m going to have a million tasks to juggle in my village, all while trying to sneak some crusades in. The frustrating part is failing a crusade, and then not being able to immediately jump back in without letting my village absolutely fall apart. I guess I’m just not in the right headspace for it right now.
I picked up Kaze and the Wild Masks on sale and WOW is it an incredible Donkey Kong Country clone! Absolute comfort food gaming for me.

Already beat Xenoblade Future Redeemed, but now I'm trying to 100% it.

Haven’t done a lot on switch recently, mostly Zero Dawn on PS4 but it’s really starting to bore me. Lot of repetitive robot fights. This game pales in comparison to BOTW.
On the switch side I’m planning to play Stardew Valley but I’m also not super into it right now. I just need to make money to buy a coop right now, and it’s getting boring just fishing for entire in game days. Maybe I’ll renew Switch Online and play some old Game Boy or SNES games

Breath of the Wild, FFVI PR, and FFIX. Really, I can't complain.
Oh, and Bubble Bobble w my 4 year old.

A little GT7 in VR and Skyrim VR i think. No Nintendo this weekend, sry!

@deecas I am about 25 hours into Sakuna. I think I am nearing the end, but it is hard to tell. And, I am playing it slow to enjoy it more. What a great game!

I'm playing Shantae Riskys Revenge Directors Cut and loving it. Also some Ring Fit Adventure as usual.

Working down Horizon Zero Dawn before I have to forget how my PS controller works.

I am playing the fantastic Kena: Bridge of Spirits on PlayStation 5 and I am having a heck of a time. Such a joy visually, and the gameplay is on par as well. And I also adore the soundtrack on this one.

I just beat Dual Destinies yesterday, so it's on to Ace Attorney 6: Spirit of Justice (on 3DS, of course), the latest entry in the main series introducing a totally out-of-whack legal system where defense attorneys don't exist. And Maya Fey returns!

Also, can I just say that Dual Destinies was incredible? I mean it's Trials and Tribulations level of good. The Mood Matrix was a really interesting gameplay twist, and it didn't take away from the standard cross-examination at all. There was a pretty even split between the three protagonists, I'd say, and the story was great and built up really well to that nerve-wracking finale. Also, for the first time in the series, there are fully-voiced anime cutscenes! An easy 10/10...and a perfect summary of everything I love about Ace Attorney.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity and also Paper Mario Colour Splash. I did TTYD, SPM and most of PM64 now. Within the last 14 months or otherwise close to that. Will finish PM64 at a different point.

@dugan, I got to the end credits of Sakuna in about 40 hours but I really took my time... to the point where I think I was massively overpowered for the final boss, it was a walk in the park. But I loved the story and the aesthetics. Really, really beautiful.

Well this weekend is a interesting one. Been playing Advance Wars all weekend so I’ll honestly probably just play more of that. Sometimes it’s frustrating to the point of hatred other times I’m like awwwww charming lil war game. I beat Resident Evil 4 Remake so it’ll be onto RE5 at some point in the future. But for now I’ll be deleting that and probably the Mass Effect Legendary Collection to install the one and only MAMMOTH Jedi Survivor I mean seriously that game is huge. As for anime I’m feeling some more My Home Hero and probably my stand out for the season Oshi no Ko. Y’all gotta give it a try if you haven’t. Thanks all of you for making such a welcoming community. Replaying the original Paper Mario ahead of finally, FINALLY, getting around to playing TTYD. Really looking forward to it, though it's got a lot to live up to since this has just reminded me how special the original game in the series is.

This weekend I largely continued Atelier Ryza 3. I'm having a lot of fun with it. It's very nostalgic to see the party all coming back together now. I especially love Ryza and Klaudia's friendship. I'm excited to see where the story goes in this entry!
