Re: Shoot For The Stars When Everspace Arrives On Nintendo Switch This December

FTL

@AshFoxX The developers have to do a lot more work to make a game look comparable on Switch... they have (so far) been doing great, but it obviously costs the devs a fair bit of time to optimise a game to run on a less powerful system... and they are passing that cost on. To be honest, for the value of having a good game handheld, I’m more than happy with a $10 premium if it means that devs are making the extra effort to bring games over at almost equivalent visual quality.

Re: Pokémon: Let's Go Sells 3 Million Copies In First Week, Becomes Fastest-Selling Game On Switch

FTL

@JaxonH Yes I definetely agree that in this case, given they will be releasing a regular game next year means they have not lost sight of their core audience, which I’m sure will most definetely sell well. I am purely talking about the idea that ‘if it sells well we must have done the right thing’ attitude.

Overall, I think ‘Let’s Go’ will be a great game... and next years release probably more so.. I just don’t like the idea that sales would be primarily shaping what they think the audience wants. It obviously has to be a part of it, but should not ‘Necessarily’ discount the shortfalls mentioned by the (admittedly toxic) internet forums.

That said!
If every manufacturer, developer or designers came out with both a ‘casual style’ and also a separate ‘core audience’ version of their product as game freak will be doing, I would not be complaining

Re: Pokémon: Let's Go Sells 3 Million Copies In First Week, Becomes Fastest-Selling Game On Switch

FTL

@JaxonH The problem with this comment, is that I see it as actually a powerfully ‘scary’ picture of the way that big movie studios (and now gaming companies) have seemed to operate. For example, if a franchise, let’s say Star Wars, has a big following, and they release a big budget movie but it’s not something the fans want specifically, it still makes huge numbers based on the fandom around the name and lore alone, but over time it loses popularity because the numbers were generated largely from the ‘name’ and not necessarily from the quality of the movie.. The studios think ‘it’s great’ because they made lots of sales, so the movie must have been good.. but in reality it’s just diluting their own brand. If Pokemon was just mediocre (and I’m not saying it is), the Pokemon branding was probably going to ensure lots of sales regardless. Just food for thought in how these companies percieve their results.

Re: Development For Switch Anti-Grav Racer Redout Close To Completion

FTL

So after being on my launch game wish list - and being delayed now for what may end up being 2 years (with near to zero effort from the devs to inspire co fidence that it’s ever coming) I finally decided to just try the demo on the PC....

It’s generally great.... BUT.... the air brake mechanic in Wipeout is near perfect... and here, they tried something different, and unfortunately that’s exactly what it feels like... a sub-par mechanic that is just trying to be new but ends up feeling far far worse.. Sure, you can get used to it - though in Wipeout it always feels like you can make a corner at ANY speed if your reactions and skills are up to the task. In Redout it feels the opposite, like your turning power is based purely on ship ability and ‘sidestepping’ (the feeling that the equivalent air brake-type mechanic exibits).

It’s not a bad game.. just no where near what I had hoped. I feel like the air brake was done so well in wipeout, that to provide something similar but at least in my opinion far worse, was a mistake, in an effort just to be different.

Looks great and sounds great mind you - just feels very B grade in the controls department having been a long time wipeout fan since 2097 (XL).

Re: Panic Button Wants To Work On A "Diverse" Range Of Games, Switch Ports Can Be "Really Challenging"

FTL

@Equinox Bare in mind that although of course talent is required, it mainly requires money.. in that most other devs, could probably do the same thing, but don’t want to spend the money or the time optimising their games to do so.

What that means is that if Panic Button decided to make their own games, there would potentially be other developers that could be utilised to do the same thing, if money was thrown at them.

Personally I think that Panic Button have done a great job with the current ports - however I do believe they probably could have done even better with a bit more time (and budget I assume?).

Re: Feature: Rainway CEO On Streaming, Switch And Clearing The Air Over 'That' Trailer

FTL

@Grez Baffling?? It’s fairly logical from an economical standpoint. Game hardware companies (including Nintendo) generally either make a loss, zero or very little money on console hardware, especially near launch... They are not interested so much in selling the hardware for profit, but instead they want more hardware sales so that they can then sell more games, where the profit is primarily made

It’s not a huge benefit for them to sell more hardware with this app, if those same people (and existing owners) buy less games than they currently do once they own that hardware.

Re: Starlink: Battle For Atlas Physical Release Will Require A 6GB Day One Update

FTL

@dazzlerJJD The issue for me (or anyone) should not be ‘6Gb’ - it’s why is anything required when you’re buying a physical product... and the answer is simple... they can get away with producing and releasing the game early and can just keep working on it as long as they want.... instead of the technology of updates and dlc being used to ‘improve’ games in comparison to the older generations, the devs are taking advantage of this ability and releasing half finished games (which is more of an issue when buying a physical product).... the game cart that you buy is basically just becoming an ‘access key’ instead of the game... which is not great.

Re: Starlink: Battle For Atlas Physical Release Will Require A 6GB Day One Update

FTL

@Whalehome Actually Nintendo is generally providing it - their first party games are ‘usually’ tested and fairly complete as a package before release... they are probably the only devs doing that in this age of dlc/updates.

They keep working on changes as do the others, but their games are usually a (at least reasonably) finished product when they are launched.

Why even have physical if they are essentially becoming just access keys... it’s a bad trend.

Re: Starlink: Battle For Atlas Physical Release Will Require A 6GB Day One Update

FTL

@Cobalt It’s a systemic problem in the industry - ever since the abilty for developers to update a game at any time became available to them, they take advantage of it to print the physical copy early, before the game is ready or fully tested, and then just continue to work on it until release (and beyond)... physical copies become basically access keys, which is rediculous.

It’s all about money and it’s a terrible trend that devs / publishers have been allowed to get away with.

Not paying for the larger cartridges has also been an added problem on top of this.

Re: Random: Nintendo Is Now Refusing To Offer Stock To Amazon France After Disagreements

FTL

@NewAdvent Read the post by @cfgk24 for an understanding of why this makes sense. Sure it’s not great for consumers (in the short term), but it’s a good move to keep smaller retailers in business which has often been a problem over history, which in the long run ensures competitive pricing, rather than larger companies being able to dictate pricing with more ease once the smaller retailers are out of the picture.

Re: Deals: Get Crazy Savings On 400GB, 256GB And 200GB MicroSD Cards For Your Switch

FTL

@NEStalgia Although what you say is ‘generally’ correct... a 10MB/s sustained write means that you can still max out your internet speed at 80Mb/s download..

Clearly my internet provider must be behind, but where on earth do normal people get 240 Mb/s download - and there’s no way the Switch is capable of those wifi speeds surely!?! (30MB/s)?

Re: Nintendo Switch Now Supports Digital Game Sharing, But There's A Catch

FTL

@Francema If only they worked on features that ‘were’ requested... this feature is ‘ok’... but there are many other features that would be far more appropriate.... allow me to backup saves to a USB or otherwise BEFORE my switch was stolen would have been nice... for example. Nintendo’s mindset is so incredibly flawed in so many areas it blows my mind sometimes.. The rest of their product gets praise (for good reason) but they always ALWAYS do things that are just rediculous to just about anyone who plays a game..

It’s so obvious that a few changes here and there to their ideas and marketing could make them great... but they seem to miss the ball so many times and it’s almost always over the smallest little things that didn’t need to be the way they are.

Re: UK Charts Reveal That Only 2% Of NBA 2K19's Launch Sales Were On Switch

FTL

@olrodlegacy @ryancraddock

As good as the game might be - there is a real stigma with the physical version - for those who buy digital - fine - but for the people who would have bought it at retail/physical, the download required is a real turn off (not just for space, but that as well)... on principal the whole point of the physical cartridge is so that the game is on the physical cartridge... I buy at retail for this reason and if they are going with this strategy I’m happy to give my money over to other games. I say this from experience with the fact that myself as well as at least 3 other friends have opted not buy this because we all seem to like having the physical game - Plus it seems to be a common comment among forums as well, so we’re not alone.

They saved some dollars on the cartridge but I wonder how many they lost because of an all digital game.

Re: Your Nintendo Switch Cloud Save Files Will Be Lost If Your Online Subscription Expires

FTL

@JaxonH Well not really - because I personally have already been in several situations where it matters more than you say..

1. I sold my PS4 and obviously stopped paying for PS Plus.. later I decided to buy a Pro so signed up for Plus again and had all my old saves. Perfect.

2. I stopped playing my Switch for a while... because it was stolen. I didn’t want to pay for a new one straight away... Even if the cloud data existed, I would have to keep paying for the online service until I bought again.

If they are going to delete the data... the least they could do would be to allow usb / local backup of the saves.... as per virtually any device ever made... but at the moment it’s only on the system (or cloud while paying)...which is why I stopped playing Zelda for example... completely lost saves because had no option to backup locally... such a simple solution... if cloud is deleted... let me at least back it up.. come on.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe Coming to Nintendo Switch in January

FTL

@TJWorks I think it was a great showing but I agree there also wasn’t a huge amount for me there - Except - Daemon X Machina still looks great. Yoshi looks great too, but not sure it’s my thing.. I’d go a Yoshi’s island remake for sure though.

I’m really hanging out for a good racing game - i.e F1 (CM) or Dirt series, Wave Race, F-Zero etc.

V-Rally is giving me the mobile game feelings, rather than a quality game.

Re: Did Team Meat Just Tease A Potential Super Meat Boy amiibo?

FTL

rolls eyes.

If a playstation controller is ever released in bright yellow with blue dots it will definetely only be a playstation exclusive...... obviously.. because it’s a ‘playstation’.... controller.

Amiibo... is... obviously.. an exclusive... IF it were to ever happen... their comment doesn’t hint at an amiibo at all... it just states the obvious.

Re: Super Mario Party On Switch Won't Include Pro Controller Support

FTL

@BadWaluigi2 If I look at it from Nintendo’s point of view (which I am - because I want to know why they wouldn’t support it) I come up with several reasons, but mainly :

The controller doesn’t have a strap like other motion controllers, but it’s expected that you will need to violently shake and move the (relatively heavy) controller in the game - that itself is a reason why Nintendo would potentially opt to not encourage/allow it’s use.
