@EvrgrnCmln Except for the fact that the presentation last year did work well - where-as this one was almost a polar opposite. Surely can’t deny that they obtained the attention (advertising if nothing else) of many people by even putting a logo (Metroid) into the presentation... They are just a company and sometimes companys get it wrong.. in this case, they will absolutely get the message of Smash out there... but the overall Switch hype was most likely just reduced by the lack of focus on much else.
@Wolfgabe Well - I will disagree there, in that taking 20 minutes to talk about Smash in the direct and then continuing to talk about it in the treehouse, when it’s not out til December, seems like a let down however you look at it.
What I mean - is that I personally was looking forward to Smash, but if they have shown gameplay a year ago of Yoshi and a hint of Metroid among others, would have been good to see those at least mentioned again to give us something to look forward to. Not to mention that they ‘know’ the public is aware of the trademark re-registrations of various beloved games (Wave Race for example), or the fox racing game speculation as another example... having something to spark the feeling of a ‘big show’ from them would surely have been a smarter decision for them than to go on and on and on about a single game.
The biggest problem was that there were very few ‘unknown’ games mentioned, and they themselves have now set a precedent of making a fast paced one after the other blockbuster show (last year as well as the direct from the beginning of this year).
Even a logo of Starfox, Wave Race, Pikmin, F-Zero or any of their big franchises would have been nice... and surely there is no doubt that one of these are at least in the works?
@rjejr Well.... not really - I would have to imagine that Nintendo has allowed / enabled them to do this - it’s not like they discovered something Nintendo didn’t know about - maybe it will be activated across the board for all games or maybe just something that they have enabled to let this game be ported etc and will be enabled for other devs moving forward, or in an update.
@Pod I used to care - now I just look and think “looks great plus I can play anywhere”. 5 seconds after I start playing I’m not noticing which effects are on or off. This looks fantastic.
Having to download after buying physical however - now that is damn annoying. Meanwhile I’m sure there will be a day 1 patch even if they release it all on the cart.... #stopitalready
It amazes me how EA manages to be so consistantly bad with the messages they deliver to the people who buy their games. Messaging in either the way they handle their products or by the things that are actually said - one way or another they do not seem to deserve the market share they hold.
@BraveLilac @TheMadPolarBear @Indielink The main reason, is that they don’t really want to just ‘downgrade’ the graphics - or at least that’s not the ideal way of doing it. Ideally, you want the same (or similar) looking quality but running on the lower spec hardware. The way to do this, without turning off effects or elements of the graphics, is to code more efficiently (among other tricks). Other than just better coding, the tricks that Nintendo use in Odyssey (just for example) mean that graphical assets that the users don’t really notice, are reduced in quality/moved into 2D mode... this means that for most scenes, they have an appearance of high quality effects enabled for what the user can see, as opposed to the solution you mention which means that a bunch of special graphical effects and features are just switched off.
There are other more detailed explanations, but that’s just one aspect. There’s also the fact that the game engine that the PC version of a game runs on (or PS4) may not run at all on another console (the Switch) due to the CPU / chipset / performance etc. So then they have to be modified to work in a different engine than what the game was originally coded in.
Additionally, sometimes these games (for PS4 / Pc for example) are coded knowing there is a large amounts of ‘extra’ power available. This in turn means that it isn’t always necessary to code ‘super efficiently’ and code is sometimes a bit sloppy because frankly, there isn’t always a need to spend the time/effort ensuring every last drop of performance utilised.
When you move the game to a platform where there isn’t that over abundance of power, you need to make improvements to the code to make sure it’s as well customised / efficient relative to the platform it’s on.
I’m happy to try most games, and it’s fine if you enjoy it, but at a full price release, it’s pretty obvious to me that Gear Club is a mobile game port - it does not feel honest or fair to be charging or releasing games like this at that price when other consoles have games at the quality of Forza or GT for example.
It’s definetely not for me. At $10 I would have accepted it.
I’m hoping V-Rally turns out great, but there’s something about the graphics that screams ‘mobile port’ or ‘Indie developer’.... That’s fine if the gameplay is great, but I’m being very ‘cautiously’ optimistic about this one - will definetely wait for the reviews.
@Saego I’m taking a wild guess here and saying that the entire game probably wont fall apart because of that one aspect of design - however - was that choice openly stated or just more speculation from the internet?
@jimi @MrBlacky I don’t need to justify why I like having the actual physical cartridge over an electronic record of the game... there are many reasons but they don’t need to matter - the fact is, that I do like the physical cartridges as do many others, and it has always been possible, and still is... I’m allowed to not like this digital rubbish
However I will add one justification - IF NOTHING ELSE, before the ‘invention’ of DLC, there was a time when games used to just work on day one.... now I have to wait for ‘updates’ to fix the problems... it’s a well known symptom of the digital world - where this new tech (DLC/internet) should have improved the medium but instead meant it was easier to not complete a game... If physical cartridges dissapear, it means that devs have even easier times releasing half finished games as they don’t need to worry about completing it for the cartridge (mind you, they already don’t really care and make you download because they don’t pay for the more expensive cartrdige etc.... rediculous).
@OorWullie I hear what you’re saying but here’s my reply - It IS possible for devs to ship on 32GB (or even more eventually) cards, they just choose not to for price... It IS possible to make virtually any game look decent on the Switch, just depends on the amount of work required.
The problem here, is that devs / publishers will take the easiest most profitable route, even when it’s not really the best option for consumers. So, currently, it’s still a terrible thing in my opinion.
Not even kidding (and to be honest no offense intended)- however I have a bit of a game going with myself - I try to spot headlines that I think are for an article by Dom - So far I have a 100% hit rate over the last couple of months, I almost can’t believe it! - always weird grammar or a mistake or just some strange wording that makes me think ‘yep this is one of them’ - and if for some reason the headline is fine, we can guarantee the article has these problems lol.
Nice content in your reviews for sure, much appreciated info etc. but holy cow you need an editor =P
It’s actually often the use of multiple colloquialisms/synonyms/oxymorons in the one headline that makes it obvious haha... like ‘Flip to the Dark side as you bounce off to a trippy start with the new Star Wars game’ as a hypothetical example.
Incase Dom is reading this and wondering why it’s been brought up in this article for example - your title is a little hard to read with the first capital ‘Of’ and then says ‘Is’ after talking about the plural ‘battles’ (should be ‘are’ because you’ve stated that it’s the ‘battles’ that are coming to switch, not just the game)....it’s a grammar thing.. bleh
Anyway... I have too much time on my hands - Might have to give this game (Shadows) a go, seems ok actually.
@ImprobableToast I thought the tournament was for the WiiU version before they show off the new one in the video and/or the Treehouse? Or have you heard it is the tournament with the new game?
@BradC40 This game was long in development before they had access to the Switch dev kits - it might be a fair statement in some cases, but in this case, it was not treated as an afterthought at all, development for it began on Switch, as soon as they were able.
@JayJ Good to hear - If you read the comments for Mantis Burn Racing review you might have noticed me stating a few times that I was unimpressed with it as well - contrary to the NL review and other people.. so for me it seems great that you think in comparison this is much better.
@Hotfusion @Guddy Hotfusion, Don’t forget, that all of the consoles that have previously had this (the PS4 for example as you mentioned) were re-releasing games that had already sold well on their previous console, and so it really was a ‘re-release’ for most people... the remakes that Nintendo has here were missed by a huge number of people who currently own, or will own, a Switch... purely because the WiiU sold very few number in total. What this means, is that the games, although technically re-releases, were not sold to capacity (or even close) the first time, unlike the ones that (for example) Sony discounts.
@Spoony_Tech Maybe Nintendo will see one of these articles and finally realise that it’s something that consumers think is rediculous and make a small change (add something minor for a small win) with each update rater than just stability.. unlikely.. but the hope is real.
@Fath It’s hard to tell from your comment if you are agreeing or disagreeing with me, but what i’m saying is that if a game is great - then that should be the criteria to support it... if the game is a mess (like Rime as you mention) then that should be the criteria to not support it (keep in mind that this was actually already done in the past and apparently quite well in the 90’s/early 2000’s). At the moment, they are supposedly supporting devs who have experience, but supposedly ignoring those who don’t.... which means when a game is terrible but it came from a good dev, it gets supported, but when a game is fantastic and from a little known dev, it gets rejected... which to me, is wrong.
A good example for me, would be WW2k for Switch... which was (is?) absolutely horrible in the quality department, but of course it’s from very reputable companies and therefore allowed.
****So the question I ask, is ... is ‘WW2k a bad game from bad devs? They have a track record (think EA) of doing certain things.... but would you say they are bad devs producing bad games? Nintendo doesn’t obviously... but if they took a look at the game, one view would tell them it was unacceptable... rather than just relying on a decision based on ‘good devs making good games’ or ‘bad devs making bad games’, the games themselves should not be so plainly judged.
Makes no sense. If it’s a good game - release it. If it’s a terrible game, don’t release it. By the logic Nintendo explains, a dev with experience but horrible content is fine but.a fantastic game made by devs with less console experience is discarded. Not good, and some of the trash on the eshop shows this.
Having no selection process would be bad as well, as per some other platforms, but if you are going to be selective at least be smart about it.
@bluedogrulez Is it even isometric?? I think it’s just top down 2d right? Ok actually on second look yes there is definetely some 3d perspective there but I don’t think it’s isometric.
@Dom Sounds great! Looking forward to this game - missed it on Wii U. However just a question - Why does it bode well for other games? In relation to the Switch storage needs do you mean? Just not sure what that comment was referring to. I think it’s great that they managed to reduce the size mind you, but just wasn’t sure why this ‘bodes well’ for other games.
@Galenmereth not really pointless considering there are many options for playing on a TV (Pro controller being my favouritr) but none for portable mode. This is fine for portable play, attached to the system.
If it’s cheaper than it would have been, because they removed those features I’m fine with it, as I only use the joy-con for portable mode anyway.
@MsJubilee I know where you’re coming from, however keep in mind the porting of one piece of software doesn’t usually indicate how the other will result.. the common factor is obviously the hardware but the uncommon factors (among many others) are the skill of the programmers/leadership themselves, the amount of time allocated to the project (a massive factor) and also the starting point, as in how the game was originally designed has a large impact.
Who knows, you might be right, but basing it on other games (even if it were the same people) is not a good indicator.
Unfortunately - the effort put into ports for a system like the Switch which requires additional work to code more efficiently (better), is often times lacking.. so I guess we’ll see.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Read what you quoted from me... I said if it were the same game as the Wii U, it would still be good because it would still be the console version of the game but portable.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Strange that by reading the article, I notice that it specifically stated that he wanted to do consulting work, yet you speak of
it (in the comment you wrote within the same minute this article was posted), like it’s news that we have to go find somewhere.. almost as if the article hadn’t been read yet..
Meanwhile.. I think alot of people will probably agree with me that whether it’s a new game or an updated game, it’s still great news. Great for those who didn’t have a Wii U if it’s the exact same game... great for everyone if it’s different / more... even great for everyone if it’s the same but fully portable console version. Win...or a win.
@thesilverbrick I don’t know the answer for sure, but there is obviously the possibility that they have been developing a game before the release of a DLC character!?
@Meei Firstly - It’s a fun game, so I’m happy to pay full price for it - but to reply to your comment specifically, the reason things reduce in price in the retail world is that as items sell, there remains less people who are interested in buying the product. In this way, the longer an item is for sale, the more the price reduces - If they reached a very small audience to start with (on the Wii U), launching it again to a larger audience makes sense to reset it to a normal retail price (makes sense for the manufacturer that is)... and for me I’m willing to pay it.
Plus, for a completely different perspective, just foe the fun of it, if they re- released a 1956 Corvette that I can buy new, would you expect it to be $500? of course it wouldn’t, It would be to a new audience and would obviously still sell for the current going rate of a new car even though all the design work was done 60 years ago.. popularity and new audience.
BUT none of that matters.. all that matters is, are there enough people who haven’t played it? yes? then it’s new to them and then Nintendo will be able to get them to pay full price.
Nothing guaranteed but if you pause/look at the controller screen that flashes up for a couple frames at the end - the player 2 controller says ‘Press Start’....
@Dom Hi Dom, firstly, thanks for replying, your reply makes it clear what you meant, but the confusion came from a couple things here - your previous paragraph where it states about DLC was mostly included and then “the review code we played wasn’t far removed from the version currently available on PS4” (in relation to core gameplay). Then in the conclusion to say that this missing stuff makes the game stick out like a sore thumb seems contradictory.. but to be fair it was mentioned about the missing stuff but the sentiment of how it impacts the game in the conclusion seemed contradictory to the way it was mentioned in the article as I just described. Anyway, thanks for the review.
@FinalFrog @Dom So they updated the Payday 2 guide and Now mention that the Switch version is a year behind in updates... that explains the review conclusion but I didn’t see that even mentioned in the review?? Strange.
@jimi I don’t entirely disagree - I just think that complaining (as many do) about a game being X years old but runs at 30 not 60 is unnessessary. If it ran on equivalent spec hardware in 2013 then that’s fine.. but was it 60fps on Xbox360 at 720p? The fact that it can run at 30fps at all in my hands, seems reasonable to me (but obviously 60 is better, just replying in regards to the expectations).
@jimi Considering it was still an equivalent PS4 game and we already know the PS4 is more powerful than Switch - obviously it isn’t going to run the game at the same level as something that is clearly more powerful..
Surprised we are still having this argument, but something I can use portably running a PS4 game should be expected to be compromised in at least some way... I don’t know why you think that is ‘laughable’... it’s not just about the game coming out 5 years ago.. they obviously need to scale it for the platform.
In addition, hardly any PS4 game up until 2017 was in 60fps but you want the tiny little tablet Switch to play those same games at 60fps.. I would like that, sure..but why would that be reasonable to assume?
@Dom As usual, so confised by the writing on this site - you say that with the game launching with a year worth of updates and content missing makes it stick outike a sore thumb..... this is almost the opposite of what the review says... why is it having a year worth of updates a bad thing?? — “but” having a year worth of updates and missing content makes it stick out like a sore thumb—... I’m so confused.
@NEStalgia I understand what you’re saying but from a company perspective, they get a lot of ‘impulse/hype’ related buys before the game is released, so makes perfect sense .... for the company =P but yes it’s not needed from a consumer perspective.
Review is fine - I agree on the score - possibly even a 5 - but seriously Nintendolife - don’t get me wrong I like your site, but reading your articles is sometimes similar to reading a facebook post :
“we can’t but think that all the content from the remaining versions that got cut from the Switch retail release is not enough to justify this version’s portable aspect”
Missing a word then completely messing up the grammar, all in one sentence? The amount they cut is ‘not enough’ - you want them to cut ‘MORE’ to justify it?!? I don’t think that’s what you meant. =P Please... get an editor/proof reader.
@link3710 @Tedikuma @NEStalgia @yeayeanaynay As others have said, Redout was supposed to come out on 30th March.... 2017
There has been no response from them when asked on facebook what’s happening with the game and their twitter doesn’t seem to give much of a response when people ask either... on a side note it’s been on the list of Switch games from Nintendolife several times with virtually no coverage of the game... clearly just an advertisement for Amazon by Nintendolife.

@bluedogrulez Is it even isometric?? I think it’s just top down 2d right? Ok actually on second look yes there is definetely some 3d perspective there but I don’t think it’s isometric.
Re: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze's Switch File Is Almost Half The Size Of The Wii U Version
Re: Your Prayers Have Been Answered, Hori Is Making A Joy-Con With A Proper D-Pad
@kepsux I only use the joy-con for portable mode anyway (pro for tv mode), so I’m happy with it.
Re: Your Prayers Have Been Answered, Hori Is Making A Joy-Con With A Proper D-Pad
Re: Random: Looks Like Bloomingdale's Couldn't Get Hold Of A NES Classic For Its In-Store Display
@Mat420 Ever heard of punctuation (like a full stop or comma)?... I ran out of breath reading your comment =P
Re: Video: Digital Foundry Analysis On Dark Souls: Remastered
Re: Masahiro Sakurai Confirms He's Working On Super Smash Bros. Switch
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Read what you quoted from me... I said if it were the same game as the Wii U, it would still be good because it would still be the console version of the game but portable.
No where there do I say the Switch is a console.
Re: Masahiro Sakurai Confirms He's Working On Super Smash Bros. Switch
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I didn’t forget - hence why I mentioned ‘console’ version.
Re: Masahiro Sakurai Confirms He's Working On Super Smash Bros. Switch
Re: Take Centre Court And Trick Shot Your Way To Glory In Mario Tennis Aces This June
I wasn’t too excited for this when it was announced but after watching the direct, I’m definetely looking forward to it. Looks like a lot of fun!
Re: Super Smash Bros. For Switch Is Coming This Year, And It's Got Inklings
@thesilverbrick I don’t know the answer for sure, but there is obviously the possibility that they have been developing a game before the release of a DLC character!?
Re: Surprise! There's A New Nintendo Direct Coming, And It's Due Tomorrow
@Dom
Just an additional note - 9th March for some of those time zones mentioned (or at least Australia).
Re: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Will Get A Retail Release (But It'll Cost You $60)
@Meei Firstly - It’s a fun game, so I’m happy to pay full price for it - but to reply to your comment specifically, the reason things reduce in price in the retail world is that as items sell, there remains less people who are interested in buying the product.
Re: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Will Get A Retail Release (But It'll Cost You $60)
Let’s all say it together ‘many people have a Switch that have never even seen a Wii U’
So for most people this game has never existed before.
Worth it.
Re: Rumour: Is This Really Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 Running On Switch?
@retro_player_22 @SegaBlueSky @FragRed
*** Where is ‘Start’ button on Switch
Nothing guaranteed but if you pause/look at the controller screen that flashes up for a couple frames at the end - the player 2 controller says ‘Press Start’....
Re: Review: PAYDAY 2 (Switch)
Re: Review: PAYDAY 2 (Switch)
@FinalFrog @Dom So they updated the Payday 2 guide and Now mention that the Switch version is a year behind in updates... that explains the review conclusion but I didn’t see that even mentioned in the review?? Strange.
Re: Review: PAYDAY 2 (Switch)
@jimi I don’t entirely disagree - I just think that complaining (as many do) about a game being X years old but runs at 30 not 60 is unnessessary. If it ran on equivalent spec hardware in 2013 then that’s fine.. but was it 60fps on Xbox360 at 720p? The fact that it can run at 30fps at all in my hands, seems reasonable to me (but obviously 60 is better, just replying in regards to the expectations).
Re: Review: PAYDAY 2 (Switch)
Re: Review: PAYDAY 2 (Switch)
@Dom As usual, so confised by the writing on this site - you say that with the game launching with a year worth of updates and content missing makes it stick outike a sore thumb..... this is almost the opposite of what the review says... why is it having a year worth of updates a bad thing?? — “but” having a year worth of updates and missing content makes it stick out like a sore thumb—... I’m so confused.
Re: Random: Nintendo Lands Itself In Hot Water With Norway
@NEStalgia I understand what you’re saying but from a company perspective, they get a lot of ‘impulse/hype’ related buys before the game is released, so makes perfect sense .... for the company =P but yes it’s not needed from a consumer perspective.
Re: Review: Monster Energy Supercross - The Official Videogame (Switch)
@Shiryu. haha sounds like you need a few volunteers Like I said, good work on the review though!
Re: Review: Monster Energy Supercross - The Official Videogame (Switch)
Re: Guide: Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories For February And March
Re: Steep Release Could Be Imminent As Copies Go On Sale Via Dutch Retailer
@Dom
“Let me us know what you think”
I think most articles on here need better proof readers.
But yea, seems like they are getting ready for sale or just a simple mistake.
