@shaneoh It’s not about sitting there and admiring.. it’s about someone turning on their Switch and saying, hey check this out... meanwhile that person they are showing sees icons that look mobile phone apps.. not a good look. If you aren’t someone who that affects, then good for you... turns out it doesn’t affect me like that either... but that doesn’t make it stupid.
@Racthet916 Videos of it running on Switch appeared to be good actually - but comments that indicate it’s running a little rocky on PS4 doesn’t give me high hopes for the Switch.
@shaneoh To many people that front screen is a showcase to their friends and even just something they enjoy looking at as a collection... if the collection looks like a mobile phone app screen, that might be a problem for some people. No more stupid than anything else.
@RazorThin Many people are passionate about their games - and in a community of gamers, the Switch faces backlash from people who think it’s a glorified phone. In that same world, if the icons look like mobile phone apps, then there is simply one additional thing for ‘hater’s to laugh at when they look at their friends screen while they try and show them a good Switch game. There are many other reasons, including aesthetics which I can understand, but this original reason alone is enough for people to have a good reason to delete a game once finished instead of having it ‘showcased’.
@DanElectrode It just reminded me of the issues related to this in today’s industry - this particular issue isn’t really the end of the world of course. The excuse that games are larger, isn’t really relevant - as I can guarantee you that if there was no ability to download updates, games would be far more ‘complete’.
@Ttimer5 The code in ‘64 checks for stand’able ground behind him.. the surface is irrelevant. Therefore, if the rail has no ground at that level around it, he doesn’t fall asleep... which is the correct result. In Odyssey, this check is not being done.
@DanElectrode Blerg... and this.. is what’s become an issue in the industry.
Release it now even though it’s not fully tested.. we can always fix it later. Grinds my gears. ***That said, Nintendo seems Much better than most others.. but still.
Reminds me of Wipeout Fusion on the PS2... admittedly the worst of the wipeouts where it felt more like the vehicle was on wheels instead of flying and was full of B grade tackyness... but still... might be good alongside Redout for some futuristic racing away from home (on the Switch).
@Medic_alert In many cases your argument might make sense... but in this case there are enough sources, comments, negative reactions to form a reasonable educated assumption that most people don’t like it. The echo chamber idea is often valid.. but there’s too many individual sources that correlate the feeling to not be AT LEAST partially valid.
If you think it’s nothing more than a vocal few, feel free... but I’d bet you were wrong.
@Medic_alert It is a fact that this character design looks nothing like the original... that’s not opinion, it’s as close to fact as you can get. Without being scientific and polling the entire world, I can take a reasonable look at all ‘available’ data... In this case, any one of 30 people that I know who have commented directly to me about this, while also from a variety of both articles, casual forums and different video comments and negative votes - *** BUT most of all - Using common sense that when something that looks vastly different from the source material, fans who have liked the source material are far less likely to enjoy a drastic change that moves away from the genres style. ***
If you honestly think overwhelming vocal approval of Detective Pikachu in comparison to this, is a coincidence then we have nothing more to talk about.
Think what you will but the design is disliked by enough people to assume that it’s most.
@Medic_alert Normally I would agree with you - and it would be fairly relevant if the design wasn’t so jarringly and obviously different to what would be expected from the franchise.... in this case, the voice that we are hearing is not just simply a vocal few, but reflective of the majority of those who have grown up with the character.
@Daloblast I will absolutely not buy a whole console for just Earthworm Jim...... .... Except ... I probably would =P Original game was one of my all time favourites.
@RainbowGazelle It’s completely reasonable... the character model for a gaming related movie is widely disliked, not just by a vocal few. These alternatives are both game related, entertaining and completely viable in a way that makes the readers of the article completely baffled by what the movie designers are thinking.
@Anti-Matter I’ll be honest - I feel like I often see your comments get lots of downvotes... but in this case it doesn’t make sense as you’re totally correct!
.... Wireless would be good but no... just exactly what I was saying was available 20 years ago... the cable went straight from the nomad, to the TV.. no need for a dock.
Yep - you’re stating a whole bunch of reasons why the Switch is good... I totally agree with all that - It’s great - All I was saying is just the one thing that bothers me is the thing I originally mentioned - that I need to carry the dock with me when I go somewhere.. the Nomad had the output built in.... Most likely, they could have done the same with the Switch but chose to leave it as a dock so that it can appear to be the hybrid console and portable.
Anyway, good conversation. By Switch 3.0 it will probably make me happy hehe
@Morrow I think you might be a little confused - the Nomad didn’t have all the games on the console... it had a cartridge slot and the cartridges from the full size Megadrive fit into the handheld.
Also.... a Samsung S10/ iPhone XS has a screen that is just as good as a great TV.. more expensive of course, but this is just to show that it’s not impossible to make a screen like a TV as you stated..
Sega had brilliant innovations (take a look at Dreamcast for example)... it wasn’t the technology and design of their systems that let them down... everyone knows the Dreamcast was brilliant, it’s marketing, timing, business decisions that let them down... not the innovations.
Anyway, Nintendo took a leap of faith with the Switch and it worked well! ... so maybe the next model will be even better anyway.
@Morrow Don’t get me wrong, I love my Switch, but here’s my only real gripe with it.. the Sega Nomad, made in the 1990’s was able to be the entire Megadrive (genesis) console but in a handheld (even played the original cartridges!), with TV-out without having to dock it ... This is now over 20 years later and we have to take the big dock for Switch along with us if we travel and want to play on a TV. I feel like 20 years worth of improvements to basically what is the same thing (a console in a portable) should have improvements that build on this invention .. not just in performance but in features... On a side note, the handheld screen on the Nomad was arguably better than many home TVs at the time.
Like I said... Switch is great.. but if they look at a console from 20 years ago and what ideas / ingenious features it has, surely they could have built on those.
@Devlind I’m not sure what you mean - We know they had to start from scratch as Nintendo came out and stated as much? Even if the ground work was done, they aren’t likely to use much of it for a new development studio with likely a new approach.
@KayFiOS Really?? It’s not about the sd space - it’s about the fact that you are buying a physical copy of a game with the cartridge- and it’s useless.. it’s basically just a gamekey to the download... I have plenty of space on sd but I’m buying physical because that’s what I like - but if the game’s not even on there.. it’s ridiculous and defeats the purpose of physical in the first place.
It would be like going down to the dvd/video store, buying a dvd and then having to come home and enter the dvd code onto youtube to play the dvd from youtube.. makes absolutely no sense.
@Lionyone Doing the same with PS4 as I got a great deal on both.
Hoping that cross ‘save’ is a thing... I know they are thinking about cross play but cross save will be great for me as it means I can go portable with Switch or PS4 at home.
@nintendolie Mostly because they are coding for a high power system - in those cases, extreme optimisation is not neccessary, as the raw power gets them a get out of jail free card. It’s therefore difficult if the game has to then be reworked and they need to put a lot of effort in to allow the large number of assets or techniques or whatever it is, to work on the switch at an appropriate framerate.
In Shinen’s case, they built it for Switch, so they weren’t reworking the game, they were building with the tech specs in mind. I’m definitely not a fan of the controls / gameplay in Fast RMX, but it is a technical / graphical masterpiece ESPECIALLY considering it was a release game!
Also other reasons could be skill... or Laziness =P
@Mchi5 Almost definetely needed the extra time to optimise for performance / quality for the Switch.. Makes perfect sense, but I never understand why these companies don’t just come out upfront and say ‘we are working on optimising the game so that it runs well on Switch’... It’s no secret they need to do this given the Switch is obviously lower powered, so just say it and we will wait... rather than worry.
@Deihnyx I don’t in ANY way think it’s acceptable - but to your point, yes - actually it’s been the same price since even the Sega Mega Drive days.. at least in my country... still, the practice of half a game now, the rest later (related to fixes or DLC) is ridiculous.
@redd214 No I wasn’t suggesting that your kids specifically have an issue - just that the idea in general when I think about it, for kids around the world - that even 2 hours is a long time in front of a screen growing up.... I mean... I did it haha.. but seems like such a long time. Anyway, just thinking about how much screen time kids have these days is crazy
@redd214 I totaly agree with you - however when reading your comment, I sort of think that even 2 hours a day, might be an excessive amount of time to let a kid play on a screen every single day... I mean, I’m a gamer, but just thinking about what’s right for their health growing up I might be inclined to think that it’s still too much? Unless it’s Zelda then 6 hours a day
@JaxonH I love Yoshi’s Island (SNES)... and I was really looking forward to this... the graphics are obviously good, but this just feels far less ‘yoshi’ to me.... the controls and design just seem gimmicky.... the crafted world seems very kiddy, and this coming from someone who loves the drawing style ... or even the wooly world. So i’m not that surprised that Kirby is doing well in comparison. Don’t get me wrong... it’s actually a great game... just ‘to me’, isn’t what a Yoshi game should be.
@Marios-love-child Correct me if I’m wrong, but I suspect that bringing Game Cube games to the Switch would require ALOT more power than what the Switch has... I’m not talking about recoding / remastering, I mean simply emulating as per the normal virtual console.
@SegaBlueSky Yep, I can see what you’re saying - bear in mind (pun intended that some of the non-humanoid characters are intentionally that way because they were helper creatures, for example, like the ride-on polar bear or tiger.
@SegaBlueSky I actually thought the roster in Crash Team racing is good? But I do come from having played all the Crash games on PS1 growing up, so I’m used to those characters.... Either way I agree I don’t like the roster here.. plus the camera field of view that changes every time they hit a boost, which ‘simulates’ faster rather than actually just ‘going faster’ is very cheap looking... (very obvious in last trailer)
Umm the screenshots look photoshopped or from a different console...take a look at the video and compare... it looks like a terrible mobile port.... maybe worse... if that’s possible. The kind of game that I hope people don’t buy so as not to encourage this kind of thing.
@penamiguel92 Firstly, yes I agree they should have made a good game... and that graphics aren’t everything.. of course... but I’m sorry, in 3D games, in 2019, if your cars don’t have ground shadows, something that was even present in 3D games from the 90’s, and making excuses based on the hardware, then you’re doing something wrong as a developer.
I assumed it was going to be BOTW in first place but I was still curious to see if MKart or Smash got up there instead. It’s a good list and looking forward to seeing what might be able to top it this year.. or next! I wouldn’t say no to a Wave Race...or Dirt Rally.. we need a great racing game (non-kart).
Haha no didn’t think you were defending it was just commenting in-line with the discussion around who’s at fault (the devs). Yorumi made various comments also talking about this (and I’m in agreement).
@MattyHammo Exactly what I always say - DLC is supposed to be a benefit, but it basically enables devs to release half finished products because they can patch.
@ThanosReXXX @Yorumi There are many games that look fantastic and run flawlessly. Blaming the hardware is lazy and dishonest: The hardware and performance of this game were known before they released it, but they released it anyway, with marketing that showed a different version... relying on the ability to patch later (as do so many other’s these days). No excuse really.
Regardless of what people expect.. as a developer, have some respect for your own work.. I can’t believe they think this is acceptable to the point where they try to justify it by essentially blaming the number of assets.... ‘because the only thing to make games run smoothly is make them sparse’. How about more efficient code? ...Like they’re probably doing in the patches.
@321gofast Trying to blame the amount of assets in the game (essentially blaming the Switch’a capability) is not honesty, it’s passing the buck. Every developer knows the hardware they are dealing with and if they choose to release the game with bugs / bad performance it’s because they wanted to get a half finished game out there, knowing they have the ability to patch later (or not at all in some cases)... laziness and dishonesty at its best. They knew this ran at sub par levels, marketed it at a higher level in screenshots and yet released it anyway.
@Rayquaza2510 The fact that it’s not fully on the cartridge is a decision that the publisher is making - it’s not like it has to be that way - so to me, it’s annoying overall.

Re: Wolfenstein: Youngblood Fires Onto Switch On 26th July, New Trailer Released
@Rayquaza2510 The fact that it’s not fully on the cartridge is a decision that the publisher is making - it’s not like it has to be that way - so to me, it’s annoying overall.
