Re: This Playtonic Art Could Be The Closest We'll Get To Seeing Banjo-Kazooie And Switch Together

FTL

That Banjo DK artwork is absolutely Nostalgia in a bottle.. amazing. I’m just asking for a deal that allows them to make a new 3D Banjo or DK in original or more so Diddy Kong’s Quest style.. Im not asking too much really.. am I? AM i!!!?

BTW : Take a look at original DK country artwork and notice how DK looks.. he has no teeth... these days he keeps getting drawn with teeth, which to me at least, doesn’t look as good.

Re: Review: Snow Moto Racing Freedom (Switch)

FTL

@sillygostly If a company is willing to release games at this price (or at all) where there are very clear issues, and just plain bad aspects to the game, I do not wish them luck. I think it’s bad practice to release when it’s so obvious it needs work. Monster Jam is another prime example.

Re: Review: Mantis Burn Racing (Switch eShop)

FTL

@Aneira

Haha no problem - but just to be clear, the game isn’t terrible - i’m sure for the right person it could be great fun - it’s just not everything I hoped it would be from this type of game, and hence not really close to a 9/10 (for me).

Re: Review: Mantis Burn Racing (Switch eShop)

FTL

@OorWullie No that’s fine - It’s always good to hear others opinions and I try to be honest with mine (ie not trolling, but if it’s not good in my eyes, I’ll try to explain why).

I guess I just recently re-played MM V3 in anticipation of this and it just didn’t end up meeting the mark for me. A 7/10 though, just not great for me.

Similarly I love Wave Race, and the new Aqua Moto game was not even close...

Re: Review: Mantis Burn Racing (Switch eShop)

FTL

@Mii_duck Just to help you out, some further info from my experience - I figured I’d start the game in rookie mode at first. In most ‘arcade’ style racing games, for a beginner/rookie mode, the acceleration/turning remains a little high even while the top speed is reduced to give you that responsive feel but a slower overall vehicle... where’as to me, the slower modes in this game have proportionally slow acceleration (and turning - but this greatly depends on the vehicle chosen)... so when you take off from being stopped, in the rookie mode for example, it feels ‘very’ slow for ‘some’ of the vehicles (IMO). I referenced Micro Machines ‘96, but also something like wipeout (a comparison just to highlight where the vehicles are a joy to drive regardless of the speed class).

After playing the rookie/slower modes for a bit I jumped up to the fastest mode, which to be honest, feels much better as the acceleration and turning response is equally faster.

I don’t hate this game, I just personally felt it to be a bit unpolished as far as physics.

I think if you were to have the camera behind the car, these physics might actually feel just right, but when you raise the camera above, it feels slow to me... as a practical example, in real life if you watch cars going by on the highway at 100km per hour, from a helicopter, it looks super slow but not so much if sitting in a car... I think the devs went for a realistic type of speed relative to the track, but haven’t neccessarily catered for the overhead view as well (IMO).

If there was a solid feeling from the sound effects and verticality (such as when landing from jumps) it would probably greatly improve my experience too.

I would probably rate this 7/10.. def not bad.. just not great.

Re: Review: Mantis Burn Racing (Switch eShop)

FTL

@OorWullie I know there were other options for camera, just none of which gave me a good feeling. I have no problem if you enjoy the game - I just personally found it unenjoyable for the reasons I mentioned.

If it turns out that for whatever reason you prefer the colours, prefer the speed, prefer the controls, prefer the random ways in which collisions occur, prefer the sound, then so be it and that’s fine.. but I didn’t.

I do agree however, that this might even be the best top down racer I have played in a long time!! But unfortunately that doesn’t make it very good for me.. just better than others I have played (recently released).

Re: Review: Mantis Burn Racing (Switch eShop)

FTL

I bought this game on release hour and I have to disagree with the review. There’s plenty of content, plenty to do, for sure! But, the game has some flaws that for me at least, make this far lower than a 9 ... for a start, I do better when racing in higher ranked races (such as veteran) than when racing rookie, because the game doesn’t really get easier or harder as far as I can tell, just faster between those ranks - the racing model just isn’t very good in comparison to the many other racing games I play on a daily. Then for the second point - the slower speeds don’t seem fast enough... to the point it almost feels like slow motion when accelerating or having to reverse. But more importantly, the sound - It’s just an almost constant drone of engine noise rather than sounding like accelerating cars.. it’s just background ‘noise’ at best. Then there’s the collisions - You can be driving along, going great in 1st and then hit a random rock and it takes forever to turn around and keep going, where hitting it even at a slightly different angle, would pose almost an advantage as a bounce.. this was emphasised in rookie or slower modes where turning around if needed was painfully slow.

Don’t get me wrong, I really really wanted to like this game as I’m a massive fan of the original Micro Machines games like ‘96. But unfortunately it gave me a headache after using the standard camera angle for an hour, I got frustrated with the driving physics, the tracks (although graphically quite good!) are little bland and dull from a colour and design perspective making it a little difficult to get excited about (and a little harder to play on a smaller screen), and other factors like the sound, lack of options to angle the camera slightly at speed (I felt like even MM in 2D gave me a better view)... For example as an improvement, I would suggest that the faster you go, the more it could zoom out/angle. EDIT: yes I realise there are camera modes, however they didn’t improve my experience.

Overall it felt like a bit of a chore to play. It’s not terrible at all - it’s actually ‘ok’.. just nowhere near 9/10 for me.

I had high hopes - and there isn’t much in terms of competition for this. If you are looking for a top down racer, feel free to give it a shot, but prepare to be a little dissapointed.

Re: Review: Ginger: Beyond the Crystal (Switch)

I mean, looking at the images provided, the visuals don’t look bad at all... I’m guessing this game must be terrible, but considering it’s mentioned how bad the visuals were I’m surprised to the see the open world screenshots looking quite good!?

Re: Soapbox: It Took Nintendo To Turn Me Into A Smartphone Gamer

FTL

@Shiryu Although I agree with you in general, I found it quite amusing that you say they are too easy to hack and too much hassle - I have yet to put my life in jeopardy due to someone ‘hacking’ my phone or it becoming too much hassle haha. I find that reasoning quite funny.

Re: Review: Maria The Witch (Switch eShop)

FTL

@JRJalapeno If a game is out - I’m happy to see it reviewed. Knowledge of a bad game to avoid is just as valuable as a good game to buy. I find it doubtful that the ‘readers’ of this site are constrained to playing only a certain type of game. I for one, am not.

Re: Mantis Burn Racing Swerves Onto the Switch Next Week

FTL

I’ve wanted something like the 90’s editions of Micro Machines ever since V3 on PS1 and although this isn’t exactly the same, it may just be a great game for me - I’m absolutely excited for it.

Codemasters doesn’t seem to have the same passion for it’s MM that it used to in the 90’s judging by it’s lack of content, gameplay modes, lacklustre controls and a loss of a big game with little cars feel that made the originals so great, so I’ll see what others can do.

if nothing else these devs seem to have a good passion for what they are doing and that’s a good start.

Re: Digital Foundry Gives Its Full Analysis of DOOM on Nintendo Switch

FTL

@BlueOcean @carlos82 @subpopz @SBandy Many people have started being very pedantic about whether framerates are locked to 30 or 60fps since the Switch came out but you might be interested to find that MOST games on PS4 and Xbox One and especially those prior to 2017 were not locked to 30fps. Most of them try to target 30fps and most of them stutter from this as well. Ironic then that when a system which is clearly lower powered comes out that it's now that these people start to comment on whether it's good enough.

It just seems strange to me that you mention the 'main problem' is that it doesn't reach 30fps (I know the PS4 version of this game has 60fps), but here on Switch it really is dropping to something that many many other games drop to on other systems, and for those games, people have never seemed to have an issue until the Switch came out and people are rampantly stating 30/60 not good enough etc..

Re: Review: DOOM (Switch)

FTL

@gcunit @JamesR Well I know it’s 1am in Aus - so maybe the same everywhere. As for the score, it makes sense though.. game is an easy 9 and the issues specific to this version drop it slightly- I personally will greatly look forward to any improvements and it would be nice if those issues weren’t present at all, but I still look forward to this in it’s current form.

Re: Review: DOOM (Switch)

FTL

I will absolutely be double dipping for Doom on Switch - My thanks to Bethesda for supporting Switch while other devs sit back and wait, or release sub-par efforts - Looking forward to being NintenDooMed!

Would be equally looking forward to LA Noire if it actually contained the game on the cartridge.

Re: Review: Monopoly for Nintendo Switch (Switch)

FTL

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Reading the opinion of others and then posting an opinion on the game or comment based on those other peoples experience is completely different to having your own actual experience of the game and an opinion...

It seems you completely missed the point that the commenter was making about you.

You’re entitled to your own opinion but it’s clear so many of your comments just make people think you’re negative for the sake of being negative, so I can easily see why they feel offended by you.

Meanwhile, I find this review interesting, largely based on the final conclusion - If the game plays like it should or like one would expect, but is now portable, it already offers an intriguing experience for someone who enjoys Monopoly. I understand if there are bugs or problems, however it didn’t seem that they were the primary factor in that score. If it wasn’t so pricey i’d check it out.

Re: Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition Update Tackles Load Times and Framerate on Switch

FTL

@BlueOcean I think if they have to do it - Bethesda has done it right with Doom. The complete single player game on the cartridge, and multiplayer as a download - If you are going to play multiplayer, you need to be online connected to the servers anyway, so it doesn’t really affect the collectibility of the cartridge and the complete offline experience is on the cartridge.

EXCEPT if there is a day one patch to fix a bunch of bugs that should have already been fixed before release (who am I kidding, Im sure there will be).......

Re: Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition Update Tackles Load Times and Framerate on Switch

FTL

@sword_9mm I totally agree that the cartridge cost is mostly to blame (for the download sizes but not in regards to stupid day one patches and fixes)
BUT
specifically take note of who has been reported to be (seemingly) using the smaller cartidges here - 2 or 3 of the biggest names in the gaming industry .... many other devs have used the correct cartridge for their games - so it seems some massive/bigger companys are choosing to go the cheap route, not neccessarily because they have to, but often companys will try to get away with as much profit as possible until people start voting with their wallets. Why raise the price more when they can just leave half the game out / off the cart and hope the majority of paying players wont notice/care. It’s wrong, but profitable none the less.

Re: Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition Update Tackles Load Times and Framerate on Switch

FTL

@Smug43 I don’t mind the game size, and I have a large SD card - and I agree the Ps4 and Xbox are exactly the same in regards to the patching issue. The issue is that the game, when released as a physical copy, is not actually the complete game, making it almost pointless to even buy the physical copy instead of the digital. In addition, the games are released early and unfinished in many many cases - the DLC/patch download ability should be about additional content or the occassional bug - but not half the game when you already purchased a cartridge, and not bug fixes that could clearly be known about prior to release if proper testing was done on the final build.

In regards to releasing unfinished games, Nintendo themselves (first party games) are probably the only lot of games that do it right in most cases, so that’s a positive... They don’t really release massive patches and the games are basically complete and relatively well tested before release. Most patches are for content or issues that weren’t obvious until millions started playing.... it’s generally the third party games that have this issue.

Re: Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition Update Tackles Load Times and Framerate on Switch

FTL

@JHDK I appreciate that they are fixing it, and that in this case it wasn't too bad, but if it's specifically caused by the reasons stated in this article (using a smaller cartridge than what they really should), then it is unnacceptable, similarly as per prime examples Rockstars LA Noire / 2K. People may reply 'but they need to keep the costs down'.... well, they are saving their profit margin at the expense of delivering a product that people assume is correct and complete but in fact is a product where they have cut corners. Like I said, more so with LA Noire where the intent is blatantly obvious.

Personally I'm well and truly sick of devs treating our amazing 'download,/internet' technology like a way to get games out quicker or cheaper, without having to worry about bugs, or without consideration for the physical purchaser, when they deem that they can get away without it effecting sales. It completely dilutes the 'feeling of buying a solid product' and further ruins the collectability aspect of physical purchases.. I understand why they do this and it doesn't change the fact that this is clearly bad practice - 'they feel that it might not reduce profits or even will increase profits, so they just go ahead and do it'.

In addition, I'd say most likely if the issues are related to decompression time for certain assets, the patch might simply contain a few common large files so that they don't need to be extracted from the cartridge at load time - thus making your physical game more of a digital download.

Re: Bethesda Adopts "Popular Internet Saying" To Promote DOOM On Switch

FTL

@Hrimfaksi The main point I feel I want to mention, is that I’m glad they are doing what others aren’t bothering to.

However on the other notes - They have specifically said that they have spent a huge amount of time optimising specifically for the Switch because (to the dissapointment of the devs themselves by their own admission, people care too much about the performance and graphics). It wasn’t specifically optimised to run extremely well on low spec Pc’s it was just a generally well optimised engine which was very scaleable - they didn’t have to be too concerned on PC, but the engine is good. Additional work for Switch means it’s not a direct 1 to 1 comparison with say a ‘6 year old PC’ for example. Not to mention many will likely play on the 720p portable screen which is obviously smaller where reduced graphical fidelity is less noticeable - infact a tester who put together a test PC of similar specs to the Switch on youtube compared it to the beta of Doom on switch, and stated in his opinion at least that it was already better on Switch at that point than a similar spec PC.

In regards to the companies that have failed - I agree many companys don’t know what they are doing, but in this specific case which is what I was referring to, even my anecdotal experience that everyone I know wants it, is good enough for me, and if it isn’t, then ‘oh well’ and I’m glad they made the effort - On a side note, in regards to some company like Sega, as the most expansive example there that you mentioned, they projected the Dreamcast would sell but it was infact many factors including upcoming DVD compatibility from PS2 competition, some questionable marketing, and previous failures, among other factors that brought about its demise - this single game release is a bit simpler here than that.

Re: Bethesda Adopts "Popular Internet Saying" To Promote DOOM On Switch

FTL

@Hrimfaksi Firstly, Bethesda is a company and they would have an excellent idea of how many units they sold on other consoles and PC, so they would have an excellent idea of what potential this has to sell to people who haven't already played it... personally I would play it again given I can do so at any spare time wherever I am.

Apart from the fact that it's exactly 1 and a half years (but for you we will say almost 2 years lol) - I understand what you are saying but what is with people like you always referencing the graphics - If someone says 'you can have a bit better graphics or play it portably', myself and many many many others are saying give us the the portability.... and for many people, the graphics difference isn't an issue at all.

@holygeez03 haha yea but on a completely random side note, after seeing most of the world’s power points, I must say that Australia has by far the best power points.. always stable (don’t wobble and fit very tightly into the point, a ground point, and still quite compact). Every other place is either bulky or wobbly.

Now that that’s out of the way... Nice Video!

Re: Former Rare Dev Plans To Dish Out Some Raging Justice On Switch

FTL

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Actually if you look at the old games like this (Streets of Rage for example), the way the animations play out are very similar in feel... they have that specific look to them... I would guess they are trying to mimic that.... less ‘terrible’ and more ‘throwback’.

I’d prefer it just to be smooth... but I see what they are doing.

Re: Injustice 2 Director on the Possibility of Bringing the Game to Switch

FTL

@fredtoy I know what you are saying But please don’t wish for things like that because those ports were horrendous, in that they are not even remotely the same game (I don’t mean graphically, I mean in gameplay).

If they do it, they should do as is being done with Doom... the same game... graphical compromises where neccessary - stay WELL away from mobile ports please... and that goes for all devs... stop it... just stop it.

Re: Infinite Minigolf Gets a 30% Discount on the Switch eShop

FTL

@RyanSilberman @Roam85 @Cosats

Sorry guys but he’s right - I personally am one of those people - I enjoy golf games but not a massive fan and although they are different, I’m not about to go purchase two games that I have to play with a ‘golf mechanic’.

The pinball example you used is a bit more of expansive gap between those games if you have played them, though I totally hear what you’re all saying, BUT I am a perfect example of where regardless of the different overall gameplay, I don’t personally want to pay for two golf mechanic games in the same way that I wouldn’t (at the moment) buy the Dragonball game because I’m playing Injustice 2... it’s similar enough mechanics to mean I buy one of them right now and maybe try the other later... the discount is for this reason.... it makes people like me say... ok fine I’ll try another “golf” game.

I’m sure you might all reply with ‘but they are different’ and I get that, and some people would like both... I however, like many others, will not.. unless discounted like this.

I’m ‘especially’ good with vocabulary.
I’ve been ‘specially’ trained in writing.

Re: Review: Oxenfree (Switch eShop)

@BlueOcean I don’t normally do this but I couldn’t help myself because you said it at least twice - The word you’re saying...... is ‘especially’.... not ... specially. ... damn..I feel better now!

Re: Gear.Club Unlimited To Offer 4-Player Local Splitscreen, 1080p At 30fps Gameplay

@exDeveloper @dystome Many people don’t know this but the Ps2/3 Dualshocks had analogue (digital) buttons... so the X Triangle etc.. and even the d-pad was actually analogue, using pressure sensitivity.. so the harder you press, the more it registers, similar to force touch on the later iPhones... I wouldn’t have thought the Switch was capable or you would think Nintendo would have made a big deal about it, but then again, Sony was mostly quiet about it too... so maybe.

Re: Sonic Forces Producer Discusses the Breadth of Content Available

@ALinkttPresent Well by ‘comparing’ I don’t mean to actively place them side by side instead of play them, I mean to compare them now, in regards to quality, in the same way that a game can be reviewed.... but surely you knew that already?...

As I said, if you enjoy a game, then that’s fine, but it doesn’t change the fact that many Sonic games have been sub-par in quality...
Quantity as mentioned in this article is rarely the concern.

Re: Feature: VooFoo Studios On Why It's Full Speed Ahead for Mantis Burn Racing on Switch

FTL

@holygeez03 Bro... that ‘other game’ is developed by one of the most talented studios in the world... running on a more powerful system. It makes sense to compare it because you said ‘no excuse’... so what i’m saying is that if a talented developer has trouble running a similar game at 60fps on a mpre powerful console... there must at least be ‘some excuse’ and leniency to releasing a 30fps game on a much lower powered system (the Switch). It makes perfect sense.

Would it be nice at 60fps? of course... but should it be expected, not really.
