Re: Soapbox: I Thought I'd Clear My Backlog In 2024, But The Switch Had Other Ideas

Drew250

Bring back backlog club!

I’ve recently found the courage to just drop a game that I’m not really enjoying. There are too many other games out there. I just have to accept that Persona is just not my thing, and Stardew is just too mellow. Give me a 5-15hr blast of fun anytime (he says playing Fire Emblem Engage and Hogwarts Legacy simultaneously).

It’s always nice when a shadow drop with no reviews turns out to be great. But sadly it seems to often be used as a sales tactic on substandard games.
I was excited for this but I’m glad I held off for the reviews. It may still be a purchase down the line at a discount if they sort the issues.

Re: Rumour: Microsoft Will Bring Critically Acclaimed Exclusive To "Competitor System" This Year

Drew250

Would Hi-fi rush really meet this rumour criteria if it has also been released on PC already? I suppose it doesn’t count as a competitor system. I’ve just finished it on my Steam Deck and wow, would have been my GOTY for 2023 if not for TOTK. I imagine Switch would struggle to nail down the consistent frame rate needed for a rhythm game.

Rare Replay isn’t on PC so I’d love to see that.

Re: Feature: Zelda, "Linguistic Chaos", And The Challenges Of Bringing 'Outer Wilds' To Switch

Drew250

I enjoyed this interview but I have to say some of the answers won’t make much sense to those who haven’t played the game. And I wasn’t sure what the answers about Skyward Sword were about, I’ll have to read up on Alex’s history with that game.

Anyway, I’m going to say this is probably my favourite game of all time. For many reasons, the soundtrack, the story, the fact that it all fits together like clockwork.

I tend to play through games quite quickly. But with Outer Wilds I would usually only play 1 or 2 loops at a time. That meant I would often spend the next day or week or whatever cogitating on what I had found, and where I would go next. It’s game that I still find myself thinking about regularly, and listening to that amazing soundtrack.

And that DLC? Icing on the cake. Can’t wait to see what this team makes next, even if I have to wait a decade.

Re: Talking Point: Is The Golden Age Of Licensed Music In Games Over?

Drew250

I somehow missed all the covers whilst playing Bioshock Infinite. Christmas Eve 2021, I finished the game and let the credits play whilst wrapping presents. As ‘Everybody wants the rule the world’ started playing I was like “I know these lyrics…”. Totally blew me away. Had to look up all the other covers I’d missed.

Re: Backlog Club: Portal 2 Made Me Feel Clever, Despite My Minor Case Of Serious Brain Damage

Drew250

I’m glad that they seem to have stopped at Portal 2, which was incredible, but there’s no way they could top it… right?

My favourite part was any time Wheatley opened his mouth. Also, the bit (you know the bit) at the end of the final boss? Absurd and perfect at the same time.

Want you Gone > Still Alive.

I have the following games on my switch backlog so any of these would be good:
Dead Cells
Horace
Into the Breach
Steamworld Heist
West of Loathing
Undertale

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 1st)

Drew250

This October I’ll be taking 2 space horrors for a spin: Doom 3 (Switch) and Dead Space 2 (Steam Deck).

Also I will be trying to finish off Resident Evil 4 VR. It’s been great to play this classic in first person but it’s so physical I can only play for an hour at a time.

Backlog count: 97 games

@sketchturner I don’t even remember there being a lack of lock on in Deaths Door. Don’t get me wrong, the combat in Tunic is absolutely fine, I just felt it was a little floaty, less impactful than DD. But it fits the ethereal feel of the whole game and I agree a good lock on helps, especially in isometric games.

I hate making recommendations because people have different tastes (drove myself mad trying to convince a friend to buy Outer Wilds) but if you liked the exploration and secrets of Zelda then this is a sound purchase 🙂

Re: Nintendo Download: 22nd September (North America)

Drew250

@sketchturner Answer
Is it worth $30 to me? Yes. But I only know that having played it. In a year where I’ve played Deaths Door, Hades and Ori and the Will of the Wisps it’s probably my game of the year.

I can understand your conundrum and genuinely if I was in your position I wouldn’t buy Tunic yet. But that’s because 1) I don’t know how good the switch version compares to my other platforms, 2) I have close to 100 games in my immediate backlog that deserve to be played before I make any new purchases, 3) i’m an absolute miser who will usually wait for a sale on anything, I was only playing tunic on game pass because I got a super cheap deal through a Turkish VPN, and finally 4) as you say it’s hard to tell if the game is the right fit for you.

If Death’s Door aped the combat of Zelda, Tunic definitely leans more towards the joy of exploration and finding hidden secrets. DD hands everything to you on a plate whereas in Tunic you have access to loads of the world, you just don’t know you do and the fun is having those ‘ah ha!’ moments that lift the curtain a little more. There’s plenty of combat, I’d say DD’s is more satisfying and if you found some parts of that frustratingly difficult you will hear too. The bosses can be quite punishing (but not unfair).

The best thing I can think of to say about Tunic is that it’s one of those games you’re constantly thinking about even when you’re not playing. A game that you can’t stop playing but want to last as long as possible.

Long story short; definitely play Tunic, even if you want to wait for a sale.

@sketchturner There’s basically no translation needed (with only 1 basic example that I can think of) . The different alphabet is there almost to emphasise that the language of puzzles is universal. You can figure everything out from the beautifully designed instruction manual that you find in the game world.

I can’t speak for the switch version but the game itself is a classic.
