Re: "It's Make-Or-Break For Sure" - Shovel Knight Dev's Fate Rests On Upcoming Zelda-Like

DarkTron

On one hand, this is a drastic issue that should be taken seriously, on the other hand this is a company that has released 1 game in 10 years (the Shovel Knight DLCs dont count, even when they were released as standalone) and is relying on a twice-delayed game in a niche style to save it, when even 100k sales is a decent achievement (although somehow the company has $2.5 million per-year deficit without any new content), and the only thing announced for after is another Shovel Knight game (a remake), this does feel self-inflicted.

Re: Review: Viewfinder (Switch) - Reality-Shifting Puzzler Is A Chilled, Mind-Bending Experience

DarkTron

Surprised to see not a single note or point on the dialogue, which is genuinely obnoxious and takes away from the experience the "chilled out" gameplay would imply is a constant, most made famous by the Vinesauce clip where a certain line of dialogue made him instantly pause the game and turn down the voice volume in settings (https://www.reddit.com/r/Vinesauce/comments/154ebm4/vinny_promptly_reacts_to_the_viewfinder_dialogue/). What's more aggregious is that this is completely optional - the vast majority comes from an external NPC you never meet.

Re: Pokémon Legends: Z-A's Mega Dimension DLC Scores December Release Date

DarkTron

@IceCatraz The most that was said at that was the delivery of the second half of the DLC (the first being the outfits) would be provided by February 28th, and the fact it coincided with Pokémon Day led people to assume it was deliberate, when in reality all it was saying was "the first bit is a pre-order bonus, and the actual DLC isn't coming for a few months".

Re: Sonic Adventure 2 'Live And Learn' Lawsuit Dismissed, Crush 40 Musician Issues Statement

DarkTron

@Orpheus79V vaguely saying "2 weeks ago" isn't really evidence enough, for all we know SEGA informed them to "ask Johnny" prior to the judgement, and it then took them until then to ask him directly, which would cover both scenarios. In reality, based on the wording of the judgement, Johnny doesn't have a claim anymore (accepting there was no breach of contract means that SEGA's use of the song - and licensing of it - without direct permission from or compensation for Johnny and Crush 40 was and is completely in their rights). As well as this, the wording doesn't seem to match a willingness from Crush 40; Johnny still believes the songs are solely his (even in spite of this ruling), so would likely not enter an agreement with SEGA that doesn't guarantee full ownership for future collaborations (not wanting to be burned twice), which would not seem attractive to SEGA (being that they have no reason to want a different deal).

Re: Ubisoft Employee Explains Why Star Wars Outlaws Is A Game-Key Card

DarkTron

@iLikeUrAttitude except the read speed of a Switch 2 cartridge is 400 MB/s, which is 4 times faster than the Steam Deck running via Micro SD (where it is Steam Deck verified). This is just an illogical statement, coming from a company that didn't optimise the original release to begin with (when it was on PC and PS5) claiming that somehow the Switch is to blame.

Re: Dbrand 'Joy-Lock' Replacements Now Available Following Killswitch Joy-Con "Controversy"

DarkTron

Shame on the article writer for putting controversy in quotation marks (usually denoting sarcasm), this was an actual issue that the company spent days denying, threatening to silence anyone who complained, and banning customers who asked for refunds from ever being allowed to buy from Dbrand again (even when they publically admitted fault, they still haven't reversed that part). For a sight that seems to take everything shat out of the mouths of former Nintendo employees (or known leak grifters) at face value, this part seems to have been conveniently never been report.

Re: Prominent YouTuber Doubles Down On Belief That A Nintendo Direct Is Due This Month

DarkTron

This doesn't even deserve an article, he has no proof beyond "trust me". This is giving way too much credit, and the "evidence" of facts in the past is getting one specific date right (even then claiming it was way more than what it ended up being) and a very generic "more games will come to the Switch 2" statement. I think a lot of people would prefer if NL stop giving attention to very broad statements by people with as much insight and knowledge of the subject as the readers of their articles.

Re: 'The Hundred Line' Dev No Longer Sees "Bankruptcy As A Serious Future"

DarkTron

A lot of people are taking these claims at face value, but when you look at these "announcements" in a timeline, it feels more like a blatant lie than anything.

  • This claim about "company shutting down" was made just days leading into Switch 2 release, where it would get more attention
  • It also coincidentally had a discount just after this claim
  • The "dedicated" head writer did another Danganronpa-like game with another developer and announced it very soon after

I do think we were at least fooled into the severity of what was happening, and judging from the fact these issues would've been present months and years before this recent announcement, and Kodaka was apparently happy enough to co-develop a game that effectively occupied the same space as the one for his own company (whilst simultaneously claiming that the closure of Too Kyo Games would signal the end of this style of games entirely), that this was just an attempt to bolster sales numbers leading into the end of the financial quarter, by piggybacking off Switch 2 release and FOMO.

Re: Dbrand Admits Its Joy-Con Detachment Response Was "Spectacularly Terrible"

DarkTron

Dbrand were threatening people who were attempting to refund (and later chargebacking when Dbrand were initially refusing) and outright stating that they'd prefer if those people were never Dbrand customers again, it'll be interesting to see how they're going to walk back those comments now they've outright admitted the problem was valid.

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour Trailer Highlights New Minigames & Tech Demos

DarkTron

@Nintendo_Thumb it's doing what Astro's Playroom did in 2020 but to a lesser extent, it's paid content for what is essentially a demo, and the game locks content behind the purchase of the accessories (some of which cost $80). It's a demo that was re-priced to be a quick cashgrab, it's the type of software you would expect to be included for free, and as others (including me) have said, Astro's Playroom did the same to a higher scale for free.

Re: Don't Worry, 'Ori And The Blind Forest' Dev Probably Isn't Shutting Down

DarkTron

From the reviews I've been reading, the latest build has the following problems:

  • Fast travel only works to the most recent beacon, which are not spread out evenly through a level, meaning that if your objective is in a level you've already beaten, you have to replay it up until the objective
  • Basically no codex for in-game effects and descriptions. In this type of game (where you're aiming for specific items to enhance builds), this is a detriment and you basically trial-and-error every effect to see what it does.
  • Weapon pick-ups don't preview what the differences in power/effects the new weapon has unless it's picked up and checked in inventory.
  • Logical issues that break immersion (e.g. Heavy Armor - usually the tank in other games of the genre - only defends against singular types whereas Light Armor grants both a speed and resistance against all types, dual-handed weapons still give the option for an off-hand weapon even if it wouldn't be physically possible - like a dual-gauntlet user being able to use a bow (itself a two-handed weapon)).
  • Mobile-game-like timer requirements on in-game quests and resource generators

The biggest issue is the game was advertised as being an MMO (or at least having MMO-esque co-operation mechanics), and then later pushed to "first patch after EA launches". A year later, there still isn't these mechanics, nor are they anywhere in any published roadmap. Fundamentally, the game that was advertised has not yet been delivered.

Re: Nintendo Says AI-Generated Images "Were Not Used" In Mario Kart World

DarkTron

@CadErik Someone needs to learn the concept of isometric viewpoints and perspective. You're counting an extra bar on the closer side only because more of the bridge is seen on that side (the supporting cable dips down way more than the one in the background, which also exposes an extra support beam). In reality, both sides have the same amount of bars (3) and are approximately similarly-spaced. Calling out AI art is fine, but those reasons are completely wrong.

Re: The Company That "Leaked" Switch 2 Is Being Sued By Nintendo

DarkTron

@Jester676 Nintendo have a partnership with a 3rd-party accessory maker (Hori). From the context of them, they've worked hard to secure this deep partnership, then a second company comes out and starts claiming theyre also officially supported and have been given access to early Switch 2 design specs in order to make their accessories too. This can also damage anyone who did attempt to gain access to this for other reasons (developers) and didn't, yet see a random accessory maker who aren't even the main ones claim they have it. There's an actual case here, Genki clearly are profiting off this deception, and at the very least were not given official specs from Nintendo so shouldn't have been able to start making accessories until such a time as they received an official console (which was more than likely after release), and as such have gained something they should never have.

Re: "Frustrating" Nintendo Cert Process Causes Last-Minute Switch Delay For 'Old Skies'

DarkTron

@Ryu_Niiyama From my summary:

1). He submitted an early build of the game
2). Later on, he submitted a "patch" (in reality, adding in a lot of fixes and assets)
3). Nintendo reviewed the build submitted (1) and not the build with the patch (2).
4). Nintendo told them that (1) wasn't in a playable state. Dev told them to use (2) as that was a more finalised version.
5). Nintendo told them that (1) was the build to be reviewed, and that (2) added in so much additional content it should have been its own submission.
6). Nintendo rejected the build, and told them to re-submit (2) over as a new build for release.

All in all, this is very standard, and is being blown out of proportion by an anti-Nintendo mindset, when in reality it's "Nintendo are being strict on their submissions" at best (and again, understandable considering that this will also be available on Switch 2, and we're in the run up to the console's release), and "the dev is the one at fault for this" in the more neutral position.

Re: "Frustrating" Nintendo Cert Process Causes Last-Minute Switch Delay For 'Old Skies'

DarkTron

@JohnnyMind this opinion is objectively wrong, and puts further onus on the consumer identifying low-tier and AI-generated content rather than Nintendo (who, as owners of the platform, are the ones that SHOULD be reviewing content in the first place). Based on some of the wording, I actually think Nintendo's in the right here: the patch wasn't a bug fix, it was actively adding in content that should be present in a day-1 release, and the dev failed to articulate that this was the case (in reality a patch that adds in content that would be expected in the base release isn't just a quick fix). Nintendo effectively said "your original submission was too broken, your "patch" is too substantial, and you're claiming that the submission + patch constitutes the day 1 release, so make a new submission of the finished build". This is actually good management.

Re: What's Palworld Dev's Defence Against Nintendo's Lawsuit? Pikmin 3, Apparently

DarkTron

@JohnnyMind to be contrasting, it is actually very right for companies to copyright gameplay mechanics (provided the use case isnt something actually generic), its the withholding of the mechanic when not being used is when its not OK (Nemesis being a prime example), but you can't argue Pokémon wasn't using the mechanics in question, nor is it unfair that Nintendo (a company with partial ownership of Pokémon) is using them. The Palworld claim that it should be fair use is nonsense; a lot of the games they mention aren't using the mechanics in the same way, Nintendo can't be blamed for using the mechanics they partially own, and Pocketpair are literally claiming Pokémon using the mechanics in different games in the same franchise should allow Palworld to use them too.

Re: Best 4K TVs For Nintendo Switch 2

DarkTron

Making a whole article about non-Nintendo items, with a very weak link ("you need aTY to play games" isn't that strong a reason, it's very basic), just so you can put referral links for $900+ items is a very scummy move.
