Re: Skullgirls Dev Is Off The Game, Taking Legal Action Against Publisher

Daniel36

I have heard the name before, but don't even know what kind of game it is, or that it spawned so many different media... but my my, this comment section sure shows it has the capacity for strong emotions for anyone invested in the IP.

@squidduforeal Right? What does Trump have to do with this? Unless it somehow relates to the underage panty shots mentioned earlier. But then I still don't get it.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Suikoden I & II HD Remaster

Daniel36

@GravyThief You are explaining yourself perfectly. I feel the same way for FFVI, which is far superior in its original form (Well... GBA form is best, but certainly not the remaster)

For Suikoden though, it's not a downgrade in my eyes. Sure, the portraits are a little TOO polished, but everything else at least feels well done to me. The graphics are top notch in my book.

Re: Review: Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster (Switch) - Two Of The PS1's Best RPGs Beautifully Preserved, For The Most Part

Daniel36

@-wc- And you are the Lifer I associate with friendly banter! So good times for us!

@EarthboundBenjy Played it fairly recently and I don't even think I visited one performances in Budehuc. That is my only complaint about the Suikoden series. A lot of optional "mini-events" that I always skip for story reasons. "What? An army at the gates? Hang on, I need to find some ingredients on the other side of the world for this dish and I am also about to watch this play... lemme take a bath real quick."

@Sketcz To be fair, there were some pretty bad mistakes in these games. Masterpiece or not, spelling mistakes are blegh. That, and some egregious out of place swearing that I hope they removed, because it is very unbefitting a fantasy world with a very different pantheon.

@Teksette So many people about to play part II for the first time. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did way back when!

@Kraven Enjoy! I think Suikoden II is better when you play it straight after the first, but obviously it's up to you.

@wuntyme8 It is well worth your time. They are not overly long games. Especially the first doesn't take long, but pays off emotionally, if you ask me.

Re: Review: Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster (Switch) - Two Of The PS1's Best RPGs Beautifully Preserved, For The Most Part

Daniel36

@-wc- I am so happy for you that you get to enjoy Suikoden II for the very first time. In a lot of ways it is superior to Suikoden I, but I view them as one game, since the second really can't exist without the first.

And once you have enjoyed the second, the third picks up again after the second, and I personally feel the pay-off is wonderful, tying things together. So if you can find a way to play it, well worth it.

Re: Review: Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster (Switch) - Two Of The PS1's Best RPGs Beautifully Preserved, For The Most Part

Daniel36

@Tetsuro Curious about your thoughts, because the Suikoden II character portraits have, for the most part, merely received a slightly upscaled, less pixelated update. Sure, I myself am partial to the pixelated look, but they are for all intents and purposes the same.

Suikoden I has received completely new art, and frankly, I prefer the new portraits. The original had some pretty bad ones in there (Flik), and they are now more in line with every Suikoden game that came after. The one I loved from the original, Odessa, has received an upgrade that basically keeps the charm of her original portrait. So... Personally I am happy.

But even if I end up disliking this remaster (the sound effects in some early footage was GRATING), I still have them on PS3 and even on original disc, so... no complaints from me.

Re: Round Up: Everything Announced At Konami's Suikoden "Special Program" Broadcast

Daniel36

The Suikoden animé news made me squeel with glee! I was just about to learn animation simply to create one myself, that's how much I have always wanted to have one. Not that that would ever materialise, but you catch my drift.

I hope it will be animated in the same vein as Grimgar, which is a really good animé (aside from the awful fan-service) with an amazing art style. When I have some more time I will see what credentials these guys have, to see if I can glean what type of style they usually employ.

The mobile game though... It looks a lot like the Octopath Traveler mobile game, and while I love the console games, the whole gatcha concept ruins it. It also looks closer to Eiyuden in terms of character and world design and... well... that doesn't exactly spark confidence either. For all its beauty, because it does have its charm, it somehow seems to lack the charm of the originals. I would love to stand corrected, though. Maybe it's just my past experiences that are colouring my thoughts right now.

I haven't had the chance to see the entire broadcast but I was lucky enough to find out about the removal of the timed events.

For those not in the know, there is an event in the original game that you can only access if you basically speedrun the entire game, which pretty much means you cannot properly enjoy the game if you wish to see this event. And you really pretty much cannot make a mistake either, or you will miss it. At the same time, the event is pretty cool, so it sucks... So I am immensely happy they removed it.

Now... anyways... I hope they will translate and release the Suikogaiden games as well as remaster the other games, because those two games 100% deserve to be enjoyed by us as well, and well... we deserve them too!

Re: Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes First Story Expansion DLC Out This Week

Daniel36

I really wanted to like this game. I might give it another try sometime next year, but it didn't grab me at all.

At least I was able to turn off the voice acting. I know I am an outlier here, but I truly loathe the current trend in voice acting. Honestly the only game that had passable to good voice acting, as far as I can remember, was Final Fantasy 12. Same with the script. The script and voice acting in this game feels anachronistic and juvenile.

Re: Konami Airing Suikoden "Special Program" Broadcast Next Month

Daniel36

@Tetsuro Respectfully disagree. Yes, rose tinted glasses, but they are both great. In way different ways, mind you, but both great. II has a more evolved, more fleshed out story, but I has some truly amazing moments as well. Also, II is great because there is a lot of pay-off from things set up in I.

But yeah, II is more impactful in many ways.

Re: Konami Airing Suikoden "Special Program" Broadcast Next Month

Daniel36

@Kestrel If they remaster 3 and 5, they will also remaster 4. And I would argue it is the one most in need of a remaster. 3 was pretty, 5 was pretty, 4 looked lacklustre but the story was fine. And I personally liked how they wrapped up a very confusing thing in the game in Tactics afterwards.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - River King: Mystic Valley (DS)

Daniel36

@-wc- You... seriously voted for Europe? I mean, to each their own, but it is objectively bad. The title looks like WordArt, and the fish are 3D for some inexplicable reason, and clearly pasted in with very little effort to make them part of the scene.

I respect your opinions and enjoy our banter here on this site, but I have to strongly disagree with your opinion on this one here.

Re: Review: Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising (Switch) - Tedious Side Quests Mar This Prequel's Metroidvania Charm

Daniel36

@-wc- No prob. I REALLY liked Rising for what it is. I like low stakes style stories, and I felt connected to the town as my actions influenced the growth.

It's not a great game by any stretch, but it felt... homely for lack of a better term. I 100% it. And I am a person who spends way too much time on Kairosoft games, so take my opinion on ganes with a grain of salt.

100 Heroes...

Not so much.

I don't want to spoil it for you so I will leave it at that. It didn't click with me the same way Suikoden did. But you and I are not the same, so you might end up loving it.

Re: Don't Worry, Dragon Quest XII Is Still In Development

Daniel36

@Smithicus I played one. DQ8 on PS2.

I hated it.

This is a purely personal opinion, but who knows, maybe it'll give you some insight, and it will be good for discussion, to see how others react to my views, but here is my take.

To me, it felt like a NES RPG with only the graphics and localization as an upgrade. Dungeons took forever, were bland, and combat was extremely sluggish. The world also wasn't much bigger. The characters were very stereotypical charicatures to me.

For me, it did everything early NES RPGs did, in their case mostly because of technical limitations, but now just because. There was no real innovation in anything.

DQ is unapologetically traditional in that sense. The art style also doesn't really do it for me, so I got in very biased to begin with.

I look forward to hearing others pitch in to help you make up your mind whether you should get into it.

Re: Random: Ex-PlayStation Boss Wanted More "Surprises" From Switch 2 Reveal

Daniel36

Is it me, or have Japanese folks become more crass? In every interview I had ever read they've always been polite to a fault, but lately I see more and more criticism and... well... crassnes.

Just today I read about the inspiration for Star Fox's Falco was someone's big nose. There's a lot more of those kinds of interviews. Is there a cultural shift happening? Or is it me?

Anyways... interesting coming from a Playstation boss. They didn't exactly innovate all that much from iteration to iteration. Just more power.

Ah well...

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Super Ninja Boy

Daniel36

@Pally356 I just remembered the box art for Mystical Ninja, and I can totally see how you were confused.

And both are decidedly Western for a decidedly Japanese game, which is why I do prefer the Japanese one in this instance, even if the American one has more details in its art.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Super Ninja Boy

Daniel36

@rvcolem1 You are allowed to have a wrong opinion...

Nah just kidding. Sometimes I too have a VERY different opinion than the majority on a piece of box art. In thos case, neither are great, granted, but neither are terrible either... at least not to me. They are both pieces of their time.
