Re: Random: Ex-PlayStation Boss Wanted More "Surprises" From Switch 2 Reveal

Daniel36

Is it me, or have Japanese folks become more crass? In every interview I had ever read they've always been polite to a fault, but lately I see more and more criticism and... well... crassnes.

Just today I read about the inspiration for Star Fox's Falco was someone's big nose. There's a lot more of those kinds of interviews. Is there a cultural shift happening? Or is it me?

Anyways... interesting coming from a Playstation boss. They didn't exactly innovate all that much from iteration to iteration. Just more power.

Ah well...

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Super Ninja Boy

Daniel36

@Pally356 I just remembered the box art for Mystical Ninja, and I can totally see how you were confused.

And both are decidedly Western for a decidedly Japanese game, which is why I do prefer the Japanese one in this instance, even if the American one has more details in its art.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Super Ninja Boy

Daniel36

@rvcolem1 You are allowed to have a wrong opinion...

Nah just kidding. Sometimes I too have a VERY different opinion than the majority on a piece of box art. In thos case, neither are great, granted, but neither are terrible either... at least not to me. They are both pieces of their time.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Super Ninja Boy

Daniel36

The Japanese one has the zany animé character art that I associate with those mythical, exotic Japanese games we could only find on illegal xx-in-1 cartridges. Background too, reminds me of Twinbee and such.

The American one is more detailed, but at the same time reminds me of games that had better box art than gameplay, so I am still going for the Japanese one, because of my associations.

Re: Zelda Fan Film Kicks Off Fundraising Campaign With First Live-Action Trailer

Daniel36

@JohnnyMind I would reason it kind of is the same. Brace Yourself were (are) fans of Nintendo, they had a cool idea, they created said idea.

The difference is probably they contacted Nintendo about it and probably came up with a good plan. Also, while they use characters from Zelda, it's still pretty much an original thing. It's not very derived from previous Zelda games.

I am 100% certain the people of this fan movie have not, in fact, contacted Nintendo about it, and let's be honest, creating this after the news that an actual Zelda movie is coming is not the smartest thing to do.

That said, I do agree with you, Nintendo could be more open to collaborative efforst with fans. But the key word here is collaborative.

Re: Zelda Fan Film Kicks Off Fundraising Campaign With First Live-Action Trailer

Daniel36

@JohnnyMind Look, I understand that Sega has been positive about certain mod work, and Capcom licensing hand drawn art to make it official. I get that. It exists.

Sega and Capcom are very different companies though. In our minds they may be just as big as Nintendo when it comes to quality games, but look up the net worth of Nintendo, Capcom and Sega. It's a different league.

They can probably afford the luxury of getting fans involved in their work. Nintendo simply does not have that luxury. Not defending any legal actions they pulled here either. I am also not dismissing them, mind you. It's just not a comparable situation.

And of COURSE they took down AM2R if they were just about to release their own remake. They make those games to make money. They won't make any if people can just download it for free. That is a really simple matter of loss of income, which they are completely in their right to protect against.

And I am not going to look it up, but do you know for a fact Nintendo never did anything with fan creations? I could make a slightly bad faith argument that Mario Maker embraces fan creativity in the same manner.

Not saying Nintendo are good guys here, mind you. I would much rather they were more like Capcom and Sega in this way. But they're not, and they have no obligation to be either.

But even if they did allow a movie like this one, I wouldn't choose it over the actual planned Hollywood movie. I would choose it over the actual Zelda movie if they made something derivative, clearly inspired by, but its own thing.

It would have been way better if these people just auditioned to be an extra in the movie.

Re: Zelda Fan Film Kicks Off Fundraising Campaign With First Live-Action Trailer

Daniel36

@JohnnyMind Should fan creations cease to exist? No, of course not. If my daughter makes a drawing of Super Mario, that is fine. Any employee at Nintendo would probably love it, too.

Should modders practice their craft on games? Sure. Mod away. Especially if the skills you learn can then be applied to a game like Kero Quest 64, as you rightfully point out. And if you have an inner circle of people who appreciate your work, and you appreciate theirs, and you learn from one another, all the more power to you.

Just don't go asking people for money to fund a project like this. There's a big difference here. This would be the same as the creators of Kero Quest 64 instead make a game called Super Mario Quest 64. It's not its own thing, and would not be judged on its own merits, instead be compared to Mario, and that would not be in its favor.

Maybe you misread my previous post. I am not saying they can't show their love of an IP. There are IPs that I love, that if I would have felt so inclined to create a videogame, I would take it as very liberal inspiration. I still wouldn't call it by the original IPs name, nor would I even WANT to recreate the story set out in the original IP.

I would take the original story, the original characters, and create something new inspired by them. I would definitely tell people what IP inspired me, and they would probably see it too, but it wouldn't BE the IP. Because that already exists, and also it has already been done better than I could anyways.

Again, I would love to see a movie like this succeed, just not a Zelda fan movie. I would want to see an inspired by Zelda fan movie about some other fantasy fairy tale land.

I am willing to bet most people here actually feel the same. They're just more vocal in being tired of yet another project pretty much asking to be decapitated.

Re: Zelda Fan Film Kicks Off Fundraising Campaign With First Live-Action Trailer

Daniel36

@JohnnyMind I don't think anyone here is wishing them ill. Everyone here would love to see it succeed.

Just not as an actual Zelda movie.

If they made something heavily inspired by Zelda but still its own thing, everyone here would either think it's cool, or pay it no mind and get on with their day.

They can easily make a movie about a young boy in a green tunic waking up one night from a dream where a princess tells him she needs rescue. This young boy in a green tunic can go up to the castle, hide from the guards, find a way inside and help the princess escape. He may even find a cool looking shield with a cool looking crest on it...

You get the point. It's basically Zelda III, except generic. Which, let's face it, Zelda's storylines are in large generic fantasy, several very specific elements notwithstanding. I mean, we can argue that Navi is to Link what Tinkerbell is to Peter Pan.

So call your character Leoric, having to rescue Princess Zinnesia from the clutches of the evil Gunvad, and you are all set. Make sure people know that your work is heavily inspired by the Zelda franchise, and people will know that your movie will be derivative, because that is your intention.

Honestly though, Leoric, Zinnesia, Gunvad... I am already feeling it. I am getting excited!

Re: Zelda Fan Film Kicks Off Fundraising Campaign With First Live-Action Trailer

Daniel36

Ugh...

Look... the trailer is impressive enough. It won't win an oscar, but passion projects are passion projects.

That said, come on people. Make a movie, have it be greatly inspired by Zelda, acknowledge the inspiration as such, but come up with your own characters. It's not rocket science.

Nintendo doesn't own the basic plot beats of any of the Zelda games. They are all more or less standard fantasy stories. You can easily recreate one of the Zelda stories with different characters.

Call your hero by a different name starting with an L. Give him a cool looking shield with a cool looking crest on it. Give him a green outfit. Just don't make him Link with the Hylian shield and the very distinct green outfit.

Such a shame.

I am willing to bet that they would actually make more money in a fundraiser if they had stated they wanted to make an original thing, just heavily based on their love for the Zelda franchise.

Re: Poll: So, How Would You Feel About 24 Racers In Mario Kart 9?

Daniel36

24 sounds great, but if the end result is decided before the start, as is custom with Mario Kart, it wouldn't feel very different from 12, so the whole weird rubber banding system needs to go.

If at the very least half of those 24 have a chance of finishing first, now THAT would make it exciting.

Re: Poll: Will You Be Getting The New Mario Kart LEGO Sets?

Daniel36

The Mario range was a huge miss for me. I much prefer what they did with Zelda and Animal Crossing, and moreso the first few Minecraft sets. Those were pretty awesome.

That said, Lego no longer holds the magic it once did for me. Only the Minecraft sets were cool enough for me, but those have been lackking as well lately.

Re: Review: Star Trek: Legends (Switch) - Competent Combat But Fails To Engage

Daniel36

@Fangleman32 Funny. I just finished watching the X Files, which was super intriguing to me when it first aired, but too scary to watch. I was a smidge too young.

It was finally easily available for me so I decided to finally watch it. Same problem. Soft resets. Sometimes, they'd run into something pretty much similar to sonething from two episode before, and be like "That's impossible!" Urgh. And don't get me started on Scully's incessant disbelief at everything.

I liked the last two seasons for at least giving the characters growth and plenty of callbacks to previous episodes. Unfortunately, it had other reasons to dislike those two seasons.

Anyways, I never liked Star Trek. Too much silly stuff going on. This game doesn't do anything to make that better.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link

Daniel36

I bought it because of the box and cutout and golden cartridge, and I did not regret it.

One of my fave Zeldas, my gateway to fantasy gaming, and absolutely iconic box.

Choice based on nostalgia? Yes. I did, however, greatly appreciate the art in the booklet, which is like the JP box art.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Breath Of Fire II

Daniel36

While not as terrible as the box art for the first... and I guess kudos for at least having the main character look the same as the first, BoF is very clearly an animé aesthetic, so going for a fantasy rendition of Ridge Forrester from the Bold and the Beautiful was always wrong.

That said, JP's box isn't great. The later GBA art is way better.

Re: Legend Of Heroes: Trails In The Sky Remake Lands On Switch Fall 2025

Daniel36

I hope the script is also being redone. I could not get through that wall of superfluous text.

Every other sentence started, or was continued with "That said", "Having said that" or any other variant of that manner of speech. I have come to understand it's a very common manner of speaking in Japanese, since it's in every single animé ever subtitled, but it just doesn't translate well. Or at least not to me. It annoyed the crap out of me.

Re: Your 'Nintendo Switch Year In Review 2024' Stats Are Available Now

Daniel36

Super ashamed to admit that my most played game was New Denpa Men at a whopping 101 hours. I did enjoy my time in it, but I am very happy that I successfully weened off of it. I completely quit playing a little while back and am happier as a result.

I even spent like 15 bucks on it, but I don't feel that bad about that, since that's basically the price of a cup of coffee these days.

Re: Atlus Lead Explains Why Persona Protagonists Are High School Males

Daniel36

Funny, I was just having this exact conversation with a few students, on how males tend to be less mature... Or females more mature, whichever way you put it.

In this case, it would effectlively mean an almost completely different story if you chose a female lead, but then again, they could also just make the female less mature than her peers.

It's a bit of a non-issue though. I don't think too many people are bothered by the fact that the Atelier series only has female protagonists... It's kind of what the storylines demand in both cases.

@DripDropCop146 Haha, good one. We still wouldn't be able to relate though, I don't think Japanese mid-life crises have a lot in common with us Westerners. I did however, for my mid-life crisis, chose to go back to college part-time, and there were definitely some weird demonic things going on in that school, so in that sense I can relate.

The weird demonic thing was a joke, obviously.

Re: Opinion: At Last, Vanillaware Hit The Big Time With Unicorn Overlord

Daniel36

I picked it as my GOTY in the Nintendo mail. I didn't play much of it.

Shamefully and regrettably, my most played game was New Denpa Men at 101 hours. In retrospect, those were 101 hours I will never get back, but I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it... And I also spent some money on it... Which again is regrettable, but not unlike buying an overpriced coffee.

Re: Bandai Namco Unveils New Pac-Man Game, And It's Probably Not What You Expect

Daniel36

Strong feelings on both ends, which is perfectly warranted for a game such as this.

Me, I am impartial. I like the look of it, and I don't mind exploration platformers, but I'm also not a huge fan of them, and I do feel the Pac Man character feels a bit out of place.

But hey, to those who are excited, I hope you will enjoy it. To those who aren't, I hope something else will strike your fancy.

Re: Random: Did You Know About The Korean Version Of Super Mario Bros. Super Show?

Daniel36

Well... Watching this was definitely something else. Mario and Marigi, who still has an L on his cap despite being called Marigi... Well, at least they seemed to be enjoying themselves.

@LavenderShroud If you like random stuff like this, I would greatly urge you to visit Time Extension, if you haven't already. It's a sister site to Nintendo Life, and I personally love the very random nature of pretty much every single item they cover there. However, you do have to like retro stuff.

@Not_Soos Our aim is to give as many people impostor syndrome as possible. Glad to have added another to the roster. Nah man, you can throw in short segments in between your essays. I do the same.

@Mariotag @Spider-Kev It's almost always rights issues, and probably issued by Ernie Hudson.

I remember a similar thing almost happening with a parody soap opera series that was made in Holland, where they portrayed a character from Bold and the Beautiful and ended up having the real actress throw in a cameo.

I thought it was banned from the DVD re-release, but I just looked it up and the family of the late actress apparently allowed them to show it. However, other people asked them not to release their segments on DVD, so a lot of parts were lost on that series as well.

Re: Review: Fairy Tail 2 (Switch) - Hurt By Its Breakneck Pace, But Still A Step Up

Daniel36

@Zaruboggan I only played the beginning and unfortunately it didn't click with me. The world felt too empty for me. But thanks for the suggestion!

@-wc- I am almost jealous you will experience Suikoden 2 for the first time. Replay 1 first, then play 2, then 3 again. They are all semi continuous. 2 is AMAZING!

@gabrigoes What -wc- is referencing is me talking about the overall quality of the game. I personally did not find EC worth my time, though I did enjoy the Rising game, speaking of low stakes stories...

@Samalik Oof. While I appreciate the suggestion, I sort of loathe the fan-servicy parts of that series. I won't go into detail as that would derail this already derailed discussion into unfriendly territory. Maybe I should try one of the older entries... I did give a PS1 entry a try once, I think.

Re: Review: Fairy Tail 2 (Switch) - Hurt By Its Breakneck Pace, But Still A Step Up

Daniel36

@-wc- Suikoden is my absolute favourite game series! I still need to play Earthbound, gave it a few tries but it was never the right moment.

Yeah, low stakes absolutely trumps high stakes, if you ask me. Unfortunately very few JRPGs produce that kind of feel to a good degree, if any.

Of relatively new games, I think only Octopath Traveler captured that a bit for me. I actually prefer the first over the sequel, though I do like both. I'll happily take suggestions on any other games with similar vibes, though I'll probably already know them.

I've always had the dream of creating my own "low stakes" RPG, but I lack the time to do so.
