If you never bothered to create an ongoing storyline, instead just making whatever strikesnyour fancy, then don't hamfist it in 40 years later. Same goes for Zelda and Mario. There is no logical timeline. There isn't even a set world to speak of!!
Now that is a mode I can get behind. Makes it feel more realistic. Not sure if I will ever give this game a try, but this certainly sounds like a good way to enjoy it. As long as it can be combined with easy AI.
@Anti-Matter So people are not allowed to like what they like?
As if you only ever choose the best looking games. You love objectively worse games too, like that Ryan's Toy Review kart racer. Power to you, but don't dismiss other people's preferences. Just because Mario Kart is better doesn't mean you are not allowed to like that game.
I like Portal Knights, but Minecraft has a different reason why it pulls people in. It's far more of a sandbox than Portal Knights is.
Not seeing Various Daylife in this list, but it IS for sale, and let me tell you... I was pleasantly surprised!
For anyone who really liked Final Fantasy : Crystal Chronicles - My Life as a King ; You are going to like this game as well.
Disclaimer: I really love low stakes fantasy stories. This game is almost more "slice of life" than it is adventure, but that's the way I like it. This game kind of made me hope they did a remaster of FF:CC-MLaaK, but this is also a really nice game to play.
I think it also has some similarities to Miitopia, at least gameplay-wise.
Funny, since Pokemon had had sets of "not-Lego" for years now. I think they're called Megabricks or something, but it could be a different brand name. Anyways, they weren't even that bad.
Ahh, @Ulysses beat me to it. Could be Mega Blocks indeed...
@boxyguy I don't think they forgot what the lawsuit was about in letter, but the lawsuit was about more than code and a ball being thrown. That was just the only thing that would legally stick.
We all know this was about blatant copying and riding the Pokemon popularity wave. It's just not what the lawsuit was about.
@Jeronan They named their company PocketPair. They knew what they were doing. And you can look at some of the other games they've released, and see it wasn't the first time they did some very blatant copying of homework. Has nothing to do with stifling creativity, when you also KNOW that there are plenty monster catching games on Nintendo platforms that they have no qualms about. Wonder why that is.
@B3RTAY That's it, I am never buying full price again!! No more FOMO for me.
Bought Unicorn Overlord full price after there were finally copies available again after the first batch sold out in record time, thinking it was a small window of opportunity, only to find it 20 quid off two weeks later everywhere.
It is worth 8 quid. Your mileage may vary... I was hoping for a worthy Suikoden successor and did not find what I was looking for, so this was unfortunately not for me, but it's not a bad game.
@jojobar Thanks for the reply. I won't try any of the others, because they are too time consuming anyways, and even if 2 is considered the weakest one, I am almost 100% sure that the other games will not have enough for me to enjoy. Also, with numbered series, I want the games to really be interconnected, and I don't see that with this series. I know they ham-fist elements into them, but from what I can gather, the games take place in very different worlds... So... They are just not for me, I guess.
@Unit_DTH Yeah, a few folks have mentioned that 2 as an intro isn't the best idea, but the battle system wasn't why I was put off. I knew what I would get into, in that sense. It's just a lot of things that I do not like in any game, and they were pretty much combined in this package. I am very happy so many people adore this series, but I do not. Same with the Trails series. It had some of the same issues I have with this one.
@Polvasti See, I was instantly put off by the very apparent fan service of 2. So I guess the other games don't have that AS much, but then they are also too big for me to bother. The setting isn't appealing enough for me to warrant a bona fide time sink.
@RadioDog Yeah, I felt that problem from the get-go. I don't do well with games having too much to do, especially not when there is a story that has its own time constraint (as in, the enemy is at the gates, but let me walk through half the country to find an ingredient for this dish for this side-quest-type of time constraint), though I did not get far enough into the game to know if there was any. Also, it was very obvious these games are huge time sinks, and I just don't have that time, nor energy, for such games.
But, am very happy that the series is so well loved for others.
Man I am probably the only person on EARTH who doesn't like these games, huh? Only played 2 and... well... blegh... I cannot get myself to like it, starting with those AWFUL pants... yeah, sorry... I am supposed to be a character who chooses to wear those pants?
Cool. Honestly, they could easily remakeall of them in the same manner, just make it look like Skyrim... That way, no need to write an entirely new story. I am willing to bet even most Skyrim fans haven't played Daggerfall for example, and while it has aged gracefully enough, if you are comparing it to Skyrim graphically... Well... most people will think "nahh".
@EarthboundBenjy Take my comment with a grain of salty salt, but if I may be a dissenting voice here...
I felt the original of this remake wasn't so much lore-heavy as it was text for text's sake heavy. I felt the script was insufferably long while saying very little. To me, it honestly felt like it was written by a very enthusiastic teenage fanfic writer, but not in a good way. I suspect it was due to poor localization.
Every other sentence started with a variation of "In other words", which you also often see in animé subtitles. At least they were variations, I guess... Seems like a Japanese mannerism, I've seen people speak like that in interviews, so no fault on the Japanese writersnthen, but as a Westerner it annoyed the crap out of me.
Perhaps you have played games with a similar take. If you loved them, you will love this one. If you felt they wasted your time, this series will to.
@Chlocean I was thinking the same thing when I heard about that.
I saw another blatant rip-off the other day. Extremely late to the party too. Can't remember the exact title but it was that Pool gane with the liminal spaces.
I guess these games are very EASY to copy? Like... the ideas in them make them hits, but the programming and assets may be pretty easy to match? Guess that is the downside of programs like Unreal or Unity...
@brakeman90 Well, the original aged far worse than 1, 2 AND 3, and was far weaker to begin with, so it will need a massive overhaul, but I am down for that. I kinda loved Tactics, though I remember rather little of it.
@Warioware I guess I was lucky that I found Total! Magazine and later Super Play on the Dutch shelves. Especially the latter brought me the news of games like FF6 and Chrono Trigger. And I cannot remember how I found out about the store that sold import... I guess pure dumb luck? Who can say, really... that knowledge is lost to the ages.
As for still a lot of JP only... well, I visited this JP import site a while back, and half the games were erotic visual novels... I don't think we're missing out on too much.
@EarthboundBenjy incongruous. You sir... or ma'am... are a poet. You are spot on about Suikoden. They steered too far into clean graphics with the background, especially in Suikoden I. I will hold my judgement on the second game, the screenshots looked like they were better than the first game... so we shall see... once I finish the first.
@Warioware We did not get the PSX one indeed, but I knew where to find imports, and my PSX was modded. I also got the SNES one on import, from a lovely lady who had an import store in a village nearby where I lived. Amazing times!
We did, however, get the DS one. It was released in very limited numbers, though, so you had to be on the lookout for it. I found a copy a few times, but never bit the bullet. Kind of regret that now. They go for a lot of money, but that's not even why I am bummed. I would've liked playing it again with the enhancements.
And boy is there a list of games we never got in Europe. But that didn't stop me, haha.
@Warioware Ah, that sucks to hear man. I think the 3DS version is the best version, even though I never played that one. I gave the PSX one a try, but I was annoyed enough by some of the changes that I didn't even bother with the amazing animation that was added. So for me, the SNES version is the only one I've played.
I should get back to it someday. It's installed on my SNES Mini.
@canaryfarmer To be talented requires a lot of time. Sure, it comes more naturally to some, but you can do whatever you want to do. The key is to enjoy the process, not want a perfect outcome from the get-go.
@N00BiSH If someone cannot see the difference between something made out of pure passion, or something made to make money, then I don't know what to tell them.
What is probably going to happen, if this movie starts raking in a lot of views, is Nintendo will lay claim to the material, which I am sure the creator will be happy to oblige to.
I once made a remix for an artist. I put the track on my own YouTube channel besides him posting it on his. I received a mail that the copyright and everything belonged to said artist, and that was that. So any money it WOULD generate, would go to his account. Which is absolutely fair.
The difference between this and the Zelda movie from a few weeks back is very clear. They were asking people for money. This person isn't. Now, sure... Neither has probably gotten express permission from Nintendo, but it's still clearly with a very different intent. Of course, that was also a passion project, I have no doubt about that, but they were asking people for money, and that is just the deal breaker.
@Warioware I am inclined to agree with you. BUT!!!
I don't think any of the Suikoden fans expected an animé to be released. And that was a very happy suprise. And there were a few other surprises in there as well, though most of those were Japan-exclusive. Can't have them all.
And sure, the mobile game was... well... not what anyone hoped for... I guess gacha... gatcha? games are profitable enough to keep being released. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be one of those games. And yes, that would suck. But it could very well be an animé. Or a manga. I would like that.
@Friendly Ooooh a legacy collection with various versions, including a new one, that would be great! One can dream. So far, I don't recall many devs going through the admittedly little trouble of packaging different versions, aside from some pre-SNES arcade games...
@Mariotag @Warioware Pachinko would be a Konami thing. And they didn't do that for the Suikoden release, so I am doubtful Square Enix will do it for this event.
Speaking of, if the Suikoden event is anything to go by, and Square Enix has taken good notes, we might see something fun. I am excited for one. Though the "30th anniversary" thing kind of stings... Am I already that old?
Seeing Suikoden arrive in 4th has me hopeful that Konami sees how much the series means to so many people. Obviously I pre-ordered... though... I kind of wish I hadn't. The "Day One Edition" has a butt-ugly "sticker" on it, telling me of the pre-order bonus I have no intention of using. Kind of wish I had the "Regular" edition instead.
I have heard the name before, but don't even know what kind of game it is, or that it spawned so many different media... but my my, this comment section sure shows it has the capacity for strong emotions for anyone invested in the IP.
@squidduforeal Right? What does Trump have to do with this? Unless it somehow relates to the underage panty shots mentioned earlier. But then I still don't get it.
@brakeman90 Now that you mention it, movement does feel a bit choppier. But I can take the bad with the good in this instance. I do love Suikoden dearly.
@brakeman90 Honestly, what does 60fps do for an RPG anyways? I honestly don't really feel a difference. It plays the same, pretty much, except for the diagonal movement and walking being a tad slow while running feels too fast... but that is nitpicking on my end. I don't think I would notice a difference...
Wow, lots of people have this as a core memory, huh?
And here I am, seeing Robocop at around that age and being scarred for life, instead of having a happy memory. That, and E.T. kicking in my depression. Yeah, I was more scared of these movies than entertained, haha.
@GravyThief You are explaining yourself perfectly. I feel the same way for FFVI, which is far superior in its original form (Well... GBA form is best, but certainly not the remaster)
For Suikoden though, it's not a downgrade in my eyes. Sure, the portraits are a little TOO polished, but everything else at least feels well done to me. The graphics are top notch in my book.
@Tetsuro @rio_j @Metalinkster @solarwolf07 Thanks everyone for the replies.
Something to ponder. On the one hand sounds like my game, but if settlement building is out, I will be missing on a part I would probably enjoy the most.
@-wc- And you are the Lifer I associate with friendly banter! So good times for us!
@EarthboundBenjy Played it fairly recently and I don't even think I visited one performances in Budehuc. That is my only complaint about the Suikoden series. A lot of optional "mini-events" that I always skip for story reasons. "What? An army at the gates? Hang on, I need to find some ingredients on the other side of the world for this dish and I am also about to watch this play... lemme take a bath real quick."
@Sketcz To be fair, there were some pretty bad mistakes in these games. Masterpiece or not, spelling mistakes are blegh. That, and some egregious out of place swearing that I hope they removed, because it is very unbefitting a fantasy world with a very different pantheon.
@Teksette So many people about to play part II for the first time. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did way back when!
@Kraven Enjoy! I think Suikoden II is better when you play it straight after the first, but obviously it's up to you.
@wuntyme8 It is well worth your time. They are not overly long games. Especially the first doesn't take long, but pays off emotionally, if you ask me.
@-wc- I am so happy for you that you get to enjoy Suikoden II for the very first time. In a lot of ways it is superior to Suikoden I, but I view them as one game, since the second really can't exist without the first.
And once you have enjoyed the second, the third picks up again after the second, and I personally feel the pay-off is wonderful, tying things together. So if you can find a way to play it, well worth it.
@Tetsuro Curious about your thoughts, because the Suikoden II character portraits have, for the most part, merely received a slightly upscaled, less pixelated update. Sure, I myself am partial to the pixelated look, but they are for all intents and purposes the same.
Suikoden I has received completely new art, and frankly, I prefer the new portraits. The original had some pretty bad ones in there (Flik), and they are now more in line with every Suikoden game that came after. The one I loved from the original, Odessa, has received an upgrade that basically keeps the charm of her original portrait. So... Personally I am happy.
But even if I end up disliking this remaster (the sound effects in some early footage was GRATING), I still have them on PS3 and even on original disc, so... no complaints from me.
I see it on sale pretty often. Is it worth getting in a sale?
I currently mostly have time for casual play. I can't really muster the kind of attention needed for deep games. Where would this game fall in the spectrum casual - deep?
For those in the know, a hugely important addition (unfortunately in a day 0 patch, but oh well), is the option to remove the time limit for some events in Suikoden II. That was my only hope, and they added the option to remove it.
Can't wait to start (re)playing it. It's supposedly already on its way to my home.
@wollywoo Obviously I have some rose tinted glasses on, but these games are WELL worth your time. The stories are amazing and they don't overstay their welcome. The first game can be beaten in well under 20 hours.
The Suikoden animé news made me squeel with glee! I was just about to learn animation simply to create one myself, that's how much I have always wanted to have one. Not that that would ever materialise, but you catch my drift.
I hope it will be animated in the same vein as Grimgar, which is a really good animé (aside from the awful fan-service) with an amazing art style. When I have some more time I will see what credentials these guys have, to see if I can glean what type of style they usually employ.
The mobile game though... It looks a lot like the Octopath Traveler mobile game, and while I love the console games, the whole gatcha concept ruins it. It also looks closer to Eiyuden in terms of character and world design and... well... that doesn't exactly spark confidence either. For all its beauty, because it does have its charm, it somehow seems to lack the charm of the originals. I would love to stand corrected, though. Maybe it's just my past experiences that are colouring my thoughts right now.
I haven't had the chance to see the entire broadcast but I was lucky enough to find out about the removal of the timed events.
For those not in the know, there is an event in the original game that you can only access if you basically speedrun the entire game, which pretty much means you cannot properly enjoy the game if you wish to see this event. And you really pretty much cannot make a mistake either, or you will miss it. At the same time, the event is pretty cool, so it sucks... So I am immensely happy they removed it.
Now... anyways... I hope they will translate and release the Suikogaiden games as well as remaster the other games, because those two games 100% deserve to be enjoyed by us as well, and well... we deserve them too!
It's crazy how Mario Kart is still topping the charts after all these years. Says a lot about the state of the industry, I suppose. However, is this physical only? Since many games aren't even available physically, that might skew one's opinion.
@Daggot For what it's worth, the originals due out soon, especially the first one, aren't huge time wasters. You can finish Suikoden I in under 20 hours, and it is worth playing it without trying to find every character. Suikoden II is a larger game, but you will stil feel way more progress in a shorter amount of time. They are worth playing.
It definitely is the weakest of the mainline series. I do not consider the DS and PSP games a Suikoden games, so this one is the weakest, but I enjoyed it greatly. Not sure I liked some of the implications made about the world, though.

Of course, that was also a passion project, I have no doubt about that, but they were asking people for money, and that is just the deal breaker.
Anyways, I loved this. It's really good.
Re: Chrono Trigger To Celebrate 30th Anniversary With "Various Projects"
@Warioware I am inclined to agree with you. BUT!!!
I don't think any of the Suikoden fans expected an animé to be released. And that was a very happy suprise. And there were a few other surprises in there as well, though most of those were Japan-exclusive. Can't have them all.
And sure, the mobile game was... well... not what anyone hoped for... I guess gacha... gatcha? games are profitable enough to keep being released. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be one of those games. And yes, that would suck. But it could very well be an animé. Or a manga. I would like that.
Re: Chrono Trigger To Celebrate 30th Anniversary With "Various Projects"
@Friendly Ooooh a legacy collection with various versions, including a new one, that would be great! One can dream. So far,
I don't recall many devs going through the admittedly little trouble of packaging different versions, aside from some pre-SNES arcade games...
Re: UK Charts: Split Fiction's Strong Start Has Us Praying For A Switch 2 Port
Seeing Suikoden arrive in 4th has me hopeful that Konami sees how much the series means to so many people. Obviously I pre-ordered... though... I kind of wish I hadn't. The "Day One Edition" has a butt-ugly "sticker" on it, telling me of the pre-order bonus I have no intention of using. Kind of wish I had the "Regular" edition instead.
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship Of Doom (NES)
I usually prefer the animé look, but in this instance the Western one just fits the game perfectly.
Re: Skullgirls Dev Is Off The Game, Taking Legal Action Against Publisher
I have heard the name before, but don't even know what kind of game it is, or that it spawned so many different media... but my my, this comment section sure shows it has the capacity for strong emotions for anyone invested in the IP.
@squidduforeal Right? What does Trump have to do with this? Unless it somehow relates to the underage panty shots mentioned earlier. But then I still don't get it.
Re: Review: Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster (Switch) - Two Of The PS1's Best RPGs Beautifully Preserved, For The Most Part
@brakeman90 Now that you mention it, movement does feel a bit choppier. But I can take the bad with the good in this instance. I do love Suikoden dearly.
Re: Review: Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster (Switch) - Two Of The PS1's Best RPGs Beautifully Preserved, For The Most Part
Re: Opinion: It's Taken 30 Years, But 'Terminator 2D' Could Right A Childhood Wrong
Wow, lots of people have this as a core memory, huh?
And here I am, seeing Robocop at around that age and being scarred for life, instead of having a happy memory. That, and E.T. kicking in my depression. Yeah, I was more scared of these movies than entertained, haha.
Re: This Super Punch-Out!! Style Game Is On The Way To Switch, Here's A First Look
Good fit for the franchise I suppose.
I am not a good fit for the franchise though, hahaha. So not for me.
Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Suikoden I & II HD Remaster
@GravyThief You are explaining yourself perfectly. I feel the same way for FFVI, which is far superior in its original form (Well... GBA form is best, but certainly not the remaster)
For Suikoden though, it's not a downgrade in my eyes. Sure, the portraits are a little TOO polished, but everything else at least feels well done to me. The graphics are top notch in my book.
Re: No Man's Sky's Latest Hotfix Lands On Switch Soon, Here Are The Full Patch Notes
@Tetsuro @rio_j @Metalinkster @solarwolf07 Thanks everyone for the replies.
Something to ponder. On the one hand sounds like my game, but if settlement building is out, I will be missing on a part I would probably enjoy the most.
Re: Review: Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster (Switch) - Two Of The PS1's Best RPGs Beautifully Preserved, For The Most Part
Re: Review: Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster (Switch) - Two Of The PS1's Best RPGs Beautifully Preserved, For The Most Part
Re: Review: Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster (Switch) - Two Of The PS1's Best RPGs Beautifully Preserved, For The Most Part
Re: No Man's Sky's Latest Hotfix Lands On Switch Soon, Here Are The Full Patch Notes
I see it on sale pretty often. Is it worth getting in a sale?
I currently mostly have time for casual play. I can't really muster the kind of attention needed for deep games. Where would this game fall in the spectrum casual - deep?
Re: Review: Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster (Switch) - Two Of The PS1's Best RPGs Beautifully Preserved, For The Most Part
Re: Round Up: Everything Announced At Konami's Suikoden "Special Program" Broadcast
@wollywoo Obviously I have some rose tinted glasses on, but these games are WELL worth your time. The stories are amazing and they don't overstay their welcome. The first game can be beaten in well under 20 hours.
Re: Round Up: Everything Announced At Konami's Suikoden "Special Program" Broadcast
Re: UK Charts: Mario Kart 8 Grabs Silver As Monster Hunter Wilds Makes Its Debut
It's crazy how Mario Kart is still topping the charts after all these years. Says a lot about the state of the industry, I suppose. However, is this physical only? Since many games aren't even available physically, that might skew one's opinion.
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Pokémon Trading Card Game
Dull and Duller
Re: Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes First Story Expansion DLC Out This Week
@Daggot For what it's worth, the originals due out soon, especially the first one, aren't huge time wasters. You can finish Suikoden I in under 20 hours, and it is worth playing it without trying to find every character. Suikoden II is a larger game, but you will stil feel way more progress in a shorter amount of time. They are worth playing.
Re: Konami Airing Suikoden "Special Program" Broadcast Next Month
@EarthboundBenjy I agree with your points.
It definitely is the weakest of the mainline series. I do not consider the DS and PSP games a Suikoden games, so this one is the weakest, but I enjoyed it greatly. Not sure I liked some of the implications made about the world, though.
Re: 'Pokémon Champions', A New Battle-Focused Game, Announced For Switch And Mobile
Wild guess, this won't be available in the Netherlands and the other countries that banned "gambling" games.
