@Warioware I guess I was lucky that I found Total! Magazine and later Super Play on the Dutch shelves. Especially the latter brought me the news of games like FF6 and Chrono Trigger. And I cannot remember how I found out about the store that sold import... I guess pure dumb luck? Who can say, really... that knowledge is lost to the ages.
As for still a lot of JP only... well, I visited this JP import site a while back, and half the games were erotic visual novels... I don't think we're missing out on too much.
@EarthboundBenjy incongruous. You sir... or ma'am... are a poet. You are spot on about Suikoden. They steered too far into clean graphics with the background, especially in Suikoden I. I will hold my judgement on the second game, the screenshots looked like they were better than the first game... so we shall see... once I finish the first.
@Warioware We did not get the PSX one indeed, but I knew where to find imports, and my PSX was modded. I also got the SNES one on import, from a lovely lady who had an import store in a village nearby where I lived. Amazing times!
We did, however, get the DS one. It was released in very limited numbers, though, so you had to be on the lookout for it. I found a copy a few times, but never bit the bullet. Kind of regret that now. They go for a lot of money, but that's not even why I am bummed. I would've liked playing it again with the enhancements.
And boy is there a list of games we never got in Europe. But that didn't stop me, haha.
@Warioware Ah, that sucks to hear man. I think the 3DS version is the best version, even though I never played that one. I gave the PSX one a try, but I was annoyed enough by some of the changes that I didn't even bother with the amazing animation that was added. So for me, the SNES version is the only one I've played.
I should get back to it someday. It's installed on my SNES Mini.
@canaryfarmer To be talented requires a lot of time. Sure, it comes more naturally to some, but you can do whatever you want to do. The key is to enjoy the process, not want a perfect outcome from the get-go.
@N00BiSH If someone cannot see the difference between something made out of pure passion, or something made to make money, then I don't know what to tell them.
What is probably going to happen, if this movie starts raking in a lot of views, is Nintendo will lay claim to the material, which I am sure the creator will be happy to oblige to.
I once made a remix for an artist. I put the track on my own YouTube channel besides him posting it on his. I received a mail that the copyright and everything belonged to said artist, and that was that. So any money it WOULD generate, would go to his account. Which is absolutely fair.
The difference between this and the Zelda movie from a few weeks back is very clear. They were asking people for money. This person isn't. Now, sure... Neither has probably gotten express permission from Nintendo, but it's still clearly with a very different intent. Of course, that was also a passion project, I have no doubt about that, but they were asking people for money, and that is just the deal breaker.
@Warioware I am inclined to agree with you. BUT!!!
I don't think any of the Suikoden fans expected an animé to be released. And that was a very happy suprise. And there were a few other surprises in there as well, though most of those were Japan-exclusive. Can't have them all.
And sure, the mobile game was... well... not what anyone hoped for... I guess gacha... gatcha? games are profitable enough to keep being released. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be one of those games. And yes, that would suck. But it could very well be an animé. Or a manga. I would like that.
@Friendly Ooooh a legacy collection with various versions, including a new one, that would be great! One can dream. So far, I don't recall many devs going through the admittedly little trouble of packaging different versions, aside from some pre-SNES arcade games...
@Mariotag @Warioware Pachinko would be a Konami thing. And they didn't do that for the Suikoden release, so I am doubtful Square Enix will do it for this event.
Speaking of, if the Suikoden event is anything to go by, and Square Enix has taken good notes, we might see something fun. I am excited for one. Though the "30th anniversary" thing kind of stings... Am I already that old?
Seeing Suikoden arrive in 4th has me hopeful that Konami sees how much the series means to so many people. Obviously I pre-ordered... though... I kind of wish I hadn't. The "Day One Edition" has a butt-ugly "sticker" on it, telling me of the pre-order bonus I have no intention of using. Kind of wish I had the "Regular" edition instead.
I have heard the name before, but don't even know what kind of game it is, or that it spawned so many different media... but my my, this comment section sure shows it has the capacity for strong emotions for anyone invested in the IP.
@squidduforeal Right? What does Trump have to do with this? Unless it somehow relates to the underage panty shots mentioned earlier. But then I still don't get it.
@brakeman90 Now that you mention it, movement does feel a bit choppier. But I can take the bad with the good in this instance. I do love Suikoden dearly.
@brakeman90 Honestly, what does 60fps do for an RPG anyways? I honestly don't really feel a difference. It plays the same, pretty much, except for the diagonal movement and walking being a tad slow while running feels too fast... but that is nitpicking on my end. I don't think I would notice a difference...
Wow, lots of people have this as a core memory, huh?
And here I am, seeing Robocop at around that age and being scarred for life, instead of having a happy memory. That, and E.T. kicking in my depression. Yeah, I was more scared of these movies than entertained, haha.
@GravyThief You are explaining yourself perfectly. I feel the same way for FFVI, which is far superior in its original form (Well... GBA form is best, but certainly not the remaster)
For Suikoden though, it's not a downgrade in my eyes. Sure, the portraits are a little TOO polished, but everything else at least feels well done to me. The graphics are top notch in my book.
@Tetsuro @rio_j @Metalinkster @solarwolf07 Thanks everyone for the replies.
Something to ponder. On the one hand sounds like my game, but if settlement building is out, I will be missing on a part I would probably enjoy the most.
@-wc- And you are the Lifer I associate with friendly banter! So good times for us!
@EarthboundBenjy Played it fairly recently and I don't even think I visited one performances in Budehuc. That is my only complaint about the Suikoden series. A lot of optional "mini-events" that I always skip for story reasons. "What? An army at the gates? Hang on, I need to find some ingredients on the other side of the world for this dish and I am also about to watch this play... lemme take a bath real quick."
@Sketcz To be fair, there were some pretty bad mistakes in these games. Masterpiece or not, spelling mistakes are blegh. That, and some egregious out of place swearing that I hope they removed, because it is very unbefitting a fantasy world with a very different pantheon.
@Teksette So many people about to play part II for the first time. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did way back when!
@Kraven Enjoy! I think Suikoden II is better when you play it straight after the first, but obviously it's up to you.
@wuntyme8 It is well worth your time. They are not overly long games. Especially the first doesn't take long, but pays off emotionally, if you ask me.
@-wc- I am so happy for you that you get to enjoy Suikoden II for the very first time. In a lot of ways it is superior to Suikoden I, but I view them as one game, since the second really can't exist without the first.
And once you have enjoyed the second, the third picks up again after the second, and I personally feel the pay-off is wonderful, tying things together. So if you can find a way to play it, well worth it.
@Tetsuro Curious about your thoughts, because the Suikoden II character portraits have, for the most part, merely received a slightly upscaled, less pixelated update. Sure, I myself am partial to the pixelated look, but they are for all intents and purposes the same.
Suikoden I has received completely new art, and frankly, I prefer the new portraits. The original had some pretty bad ones in there (Flik), and they are now more in line with every Suikoden game that came after. The one I loved from the original, Odessa, has received an upgrade that basically keeps the charm of her original portrait. So... Personally I am happy.
But even if I end up disliking this remaster (the sound effects in some early footage was GRATING), I still have them on PS3 and even on original disc, so... no complaints from me.
I see it on sale pretty often. Is it worth getting in a sale?
I currently mostly have time for casual play. I can't really muster the kind of attention needed for deep games. Where would this game fall in the spectrum casual - deep?
For those in the know, a hugely important addition (unfortunately in a day 0 patch, but oh well), is the option to remove the time limit for some events in Suikoden II. That was my only hope, and they added the option to remove it.
Can't wait to start (re)playing it. It's supposedly already on its way to my home.
@wollywoo Obviously I have some rose tinted glasses on, but these games are WELL worth your time. The stories are amazing and they don't overstay their welcome. The first game can be beaten in well under 20 hours.
The Suikoden animé news made me squeel with glee! I was just about to learn animation simply to create one myself, that's how much I have always wanted to have one. Not that that would ever materialise, but you catch my drift.
I hope it will be animated in the same vein as Grimgar, which is a really good animé (aside from the awful fan-service) with an amazing art style. When I have some more time I will see what credentials these guys have, to see if I can glean what type of style they usually employ.
The mobile game though... It looks a lot like the Octopath Traveler mobile game, and while I love the console games, the whole gatcha concept ruins it. It also looks closer to Eiyuden in terms of character and world design and... well... that doesn't exactly spark confidence either. For all its beauty, because it does have its charm, it somehow seems to lack the charm of the originals. I would love to stand corrected, though. Maybe it's just my past experiences that are colouring my thoughts right now.
I haven't had the chance to see the entire broadcast but I was lucky enough to find out about the removal of the timed events.
For those not in the know, there is an event in the original game that you can only access if you basically speedrun the entire game, which pretty much means you cannot properly enjoy the game if you wish to see this event. And you really pretty much cannot make a mistake either, or you will miss it. At the same time, the event is pretty cool, so it sucks... So I am immensely happy they removed it.
Now... anyways... I hope they will translate and release the Suikogaiden games as well as remaster the other games, because those two games 100% deserve to be enjoyed by us as well, and well... we deserve them too!
It's crazy how Mario Kart is still topping the charts after all these years. Says a lot about the state of the industry, I suppose. However, is this physical only? Since many games aren't even available physically, that might skew one's opinion.
@Daggot For what it's worth, the originals due out soon, especially the first one, aren't huge time wasters. You can finish Suikoden I in under 20 hours, and it is worth playing it without trying to find every character. Suikoden II is a larger game, but you will stil feel way more progress in a shorter amount of time. They are worth playing.
It definitely is the weakest of the mainline series. I do not consider the DS and PSP games a Suikoden games, so this one is the weakest, but I enjoyed it greatly. Not sure I liked some of the implications made about the world, though.
I really wanted to like this game. I might give it another try sometime next year, but it didn't grab me at all.
At least I was able to turn off the voice acting. I know I am an outlier here, but I truly loathe the current trend in voice acting. Honestly the only game that had passable to good voice acting, as far as I can remember, was Final Fantasy 12. Same with the script. The script and voice acting in this game feels anachronistic and juvenile.
@Tetsuro Respectfully disagree. Yes, rose tinted glasses, but they are both great. In way different ways, mind you, but both great. II has a more evolved, more fleshed out story, but I has some truly amazing moments as well. Also, II is great because there is a lot of pay-off from things set up in I.
@Kestrel If they remaster 3 and 5, they will also remaster 4. And I would argue it is the one most in need of a remaster. 3 was pretty, 5 was pretty, 4 looked lacklustre but the story was fine. And I personally liked how they wrapped up a very confusing thing in the game in Tactics afterwards.
@Teksette I am happy for you that you will be able to enjoy Suikoden II for the first time. If you loved the first game, you will LOVE the next one. Find a way to play III afterwards. Their stories loosely connect, from I to III.
Saw the dev mention this on another site I frequent. Good of NL to feature this. I almost feel compelled to buy the original as a form of support. I am sure my kids will love it.
@-wc- You... seriously voted for Europe? I mean, to each their own, but it is objectively bad. The title looks like WordArt, and the fish are 3D for some inexplicable reason, and clearly pasted in with very little effort to make them part of the scene.
I respect your opinions and enjoy our banter here on this site, but I have to strongly disagree with your opinion on this one here.
Magic already lost me ages ago, then with crossovers like Walking Dead and Doctor Who I was even more done... and I LIKE those franchises. And now this.
And I wish this was the craziest one. Wait for the Spongebob crossover.
@Duncanballs I am going to guess this is a physical media chart. The retail space comment suggests as much. I am sure if Steam is factored in, the percentage will look very different.
@-wc- No prob. I REALLY liked Rising for what it is. I like low stakes style stories, and I felt connected to the town as my actions influenced the growth.
It's not a great game by any stretch, but it felt... homely for lack of a better term. I 100% it. And I am a person who spends way too much time on Kairosoft games, so take my opinion on ganes with a grain of salt.
100 Heroes...
Not so much.
I don't want to spoil it for you so I will leave it at that. It didn't click with me the same way Suikoden did. But you and I are not the same, so you might end up loving it.
This is a purely personal opinion, but who knows, maybe it'll give you some insight, and it will be good for discussion, to see how others react to my views, but here is my take.
To me, it felt like a NES RPG with only the graphics and localization as an upgrade. Dungeons took forever, were bland, and combat was extremely sluggish. The world also wasn't much bigger. The characters were very stereotypical charicatures to me.
For me, it did everything early NES RPGs did, in their case mostly because of technical limitations, but now just because. There was no real innovation in anything.
DQ is unapologetically traditional in that sense. The art style also doesn't really do it for me, so I got in very biased to begin with.
I look forward to hearing others pitch in to help you make up your mind whether you should get into it.
Boy oh boy did Nintendo drop the ball on that one. Why they ever decided to jump ship to a Dutch company is honestly beyond me. I mean, Philips was a huge company already, but so was Sony. And Sony being Japanese, it would seem it would be the more logical choice in more than one sense.

II has a more evolved, more fleshed out story, but I has some truly amazing moments as well. Also, II is great because there is a lot of pay-off from things set up in I.
But yeah, II is more impactful in many ways.
Re: Konami Airing Suikoden "Special Program" Broadcast Next Month
@Kestrel If they remaster 3 and 5, they will also remaster 4. And I would argue it is the one most in need of a remaster. 3 was pretty, 5 was pretty, 4 looked lacklustre but the story was fine. And I personally liked how they wrapped up a very confusing thing in the game in Tactics afterwards.
Re: Konami Airing Suikoden "Special Program" Broadcast Next Month
@Teksette I am happy for you that you will be able to enjoy Suikoden II for the first time. If you loved the first game, you will LOVE the next one. Find a way to play III afterwards. Their stories loosely connect, from I to III.
Re: "They Stole The Whole Game" - Horror Indie Dev Fights The eShop Scam Blatantly Ripping Their Work
@RupeeClock Well, my kids are strange creatures so they would probably still enjoy it hahaha. They love Five Nights at Freddy's....
And I became old.
Re: "They Stole The Whole Game" - Horror Indie Dev Fights The eShop Scam Blatantly Ripping Their Work
Saw the dev mention this on another site I frequent. Good of NL to feature this. I almost feel compelled to buy the original as a form of support. I am sure my kids will love it.
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - River King: Mystic Valley (DS)
@-wc- You... seriously voted for Europe? I mean, to each their own, but it is objectively bad. The title looks like WordArt, and the fish are 3D for some inexplicable reason, and clearly pasted in with very little effort to make them part of the scene.
I respect your opinions and enjoy our banter here on this site, but I have to strongly disagree with your opinion on this one here.
Re: Random: Final Fantasy Is The Next Magic: The Gathering Crossover, Here's A First Look
@ovelhaeletrica Maybe after Spongebob.
And no, I am not kidding. There will be a Spongebob M:tG crossover. So Peppa Pig might not actually be as far fetched as you think.
Re: Random: Final Fantasy Is The Next Magic: The Gathering Crossover, Here's A First Look
@Krisi That is exactly how I feel.
Magic already lost me ages ago, then with crossovers like Walking Dead and Doctor Who I was even more done... and I LIKE those franchises. And now this.
And I wish this was the craziest one. Wait for the Spongebob crossover.
And no, I am not kidding. I wish I was.
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Star Fox 64
They're not outlaws though... are they?
Re: UK Charts: Civilization VII Starts Strong, Switch Version Outsells PC And Xbox
@Duncanballs I am going to guess this is a physical media chart. The retail space comment suggests as much. I am sure if Steam is factored in, the percentage will look very different.
I could be wrong, though.
Re: Review: Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising (Switch) - Tedious Side Quests Mar This Prequel's Metroidvania Charm
Re: Sony Does What Nintendon't By Removing A Bunch Of 'eSlop' Titles
@GoatFace04 The simplest one too. You can't tell me it's difficult to implement for Nintendo.
After buying 22 Hentai games, I kind of had my fill and don't want to see the new editions in the list. (Joking)
Re: Sony Does What Nintendon't By Removing A Bunch Of 'eSlop' Titles
Give me the option to hide games and devs, and we good.
Re: Video: These Monitors Promise Big DS Potential, But Do They Work In Practice?
The website gave me motion sickness.
And I agree with the assessment of it containing an unhealthy dose of AI-generated dross.
Re: Don't Worry, Dragon Quest XII Is Still In Development
@Smithicus I played one. DQ8 on PS2.
I hated it.
Re: Nintendo President Reiterates Switch Online Will "Continue To Be Available" For Switch 2
Trust me on this, it will mean the eShop will also stay the same.
I cannot wait to be proven wrong.
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Wario World (GameCube)
I do not like the way Wario looks on the Western one.
Re: Random: Shuhei Yoshida Reminisces About Playing Sony's First 'SNES PlayStation' Game
I rented a CD-I once.
Just once.
Re: Nintendo Shuts Down Live-Action Zelda Fan Film, 'Lost In Hyrule'
@1UP-HUSKY What happens to the money put in? Nothing. The minimum wasn't reached so the money people pledged, wasn't sent over to them yet.
You can pledge money but if the target isn't reached, nothing happens.
Re: Round Up: Reviews For Civilization VII Are Mostly Positive So Far
Got VI on the cheap a little while back but it is SO SLOW. I'd rather get a slightly updated Civ I. That game is my jam.
