Re: TOTK Director Is Extremely Vague On Game's Placement In Zelda Timeline

BrianJL

I'm from the school that it is a legend - that is, while there may be a cohesive history to the universe, each tale has been told so many times that the details may or may not be accurate. It's vague, purposefully so. While certain games do tie together as directly related (Zelda 1 & 2, Ocarina & Majora, etc.), mostly it's just a retelling of events.

Re: Where To Pre-Order Super Mario Bros. Wonder On Switch

BrianJL

I am all over this one! That presentation was great. It really has a lot more than I expected. Badges are cool, and one that gives you a Bionic Commando style grappling vine? Yes! I know some are lamenting that it's just more 2-D Mario/New SMB - but what's wrong with that?

Re: Feature: So, Which Zelda Games Aren't On Switch Yet?

BrianJL

@Roam85 Four Swords was a BLAST with four people, but it was so equipment intense that I think a lot of people missed out on it or just tried to play it single player. I had the Cube and several cables, and most of my friends had their own GBAs, so we had fun with that and Crystal Chronicles. It was such a great concept.

Re: Random: Guillermo del Toro Praises Mario Movie For Moving Animation In Right Direction

BrianJL

I agree that animation is the highest form of art - I am a huge fan. That said, I don't thing Super Mario Bros. pushed any boundaries - it's a very safe movie, not that that's a bad thing. I also disagree that animation is being held hostage by anyone - there is a lot of good and creative work going on out there, and it's coming from all corners. Some of it isn't even my cup of tea (like I personally can't stand the purposefully choppy frame rate stuff), but it's getting made, and by the big companies too. I saw Pixar's Elemental last night - it wa great! It kinda is a "teenage rom-com" too, but it has that Pixar heart.

Re: Poll: Will You Be Updating Your Copy Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?

BrianJL

Yeah, I don't see it as a huge cheat in a single-player game. Sometimes the grind is just brutal. I have cloned some precious items that I have, though I am so early I don't have much variety - they will at least be good for cash. It's not that different than getting a bunch of stuff from amiibos, which I also do. I have not updated yet, but it is asking me to. I figure I will at some point.

Re: Soapbox: Modern Zelda Dungeons Are, In Fact, Divine

BrianJL

I generally agree tha tthe dungeons are fine for these types of games, and that doesn't make the old style inherently superior, but I do still like the old style too and kinda miss it. The lack of action is what is missing, the threat of very tough enemies in those dungeons and being prepared for that. I think weapon durability ahs a LOT to do with the lack of combat, and that's one reason that I don't love that. I really enjoyed BOTW and an enjoying TOTK, dungeons and all. I love the clever shrines. Still, imagine a BOTW style Zelda game without weapon breakage AND the Hookshot! Oooh, now that'd be something.

Re: Random: Sony's Upcoming 'Project Q' Is A Little More Wii U Than Switch

BrianJL

I don't dislike the device and think it could work - IF the price is reasonable. If it's overpriced, then it will fail. They have to consider that it has limitations, but I could see the usefulness. Honestly, if it could function as a "second screen" while playing on TV, that would truly be awesome, but it'd never get the support thanks to a lower install base. Agian, the price will be the key.

Re: Mario Kart Tour Lawsuit Calls Out "Immoral" Lootbox Gacha System

BrianJL

I mean, I hate lootboxes, but I don't see them as "immoral" or anything. If you don't like them, don't buy them. If more people did, they would stop offering them. Apparently, a lot of people who play smart device games do buy them, so it is what it is. I don't know WHY they buy them, but they do.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?

BrianJL

I give it an 8 - it IS a great game, jsut as BOTW was, but it's still not my preferred style of Zelda game. There is still too much running around doing nothing, plus I just don't dig the weapon system with durability and breakage and all. I do like the Fusing concept though! I also don't like how they jsut drop power after power on you at the beginning - I'd rather have to find them over the course of the game. Don't get me wrong either - the game is compelling, even though I am barely into it, and I will enjoy my time with it for sure, but it's not perfect and not the best example of what a Zelda game can be to me.

Re: Random: Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Contains A Neat Super Metroid Reference

BrianJL

I used to have trouble witht he Super Metroid wall jump, but I finally figured out the timing. It is weird timing, but it does work consistently. The trick is you have to press the opposite direction, but wait to jump until Samus makes that little pose. It is unintuitive comparest to other games where you just jump and pull at the same time.

Re: Talking Point: Which Is Your Favourite Nintendo Controller? Every Nintendo Pad Ranked

BrianJL

Well, technically, my all-time favorite is in my avatar to the left - the NES MAX! But, for mainline controllers, you gotta go with Gamecube - it's so great! That said, I think NES-101 got totall shafted as it is way superior to the original rectangular NES controller. Also, the Virtual Boy controller is actually ptetty great, the first to implement 3D control with two pads (a precursor to dual-analog sticks), and the handles were great to hold. They system may not have been great, but the controller sure was.
