Re: Voice Of Mario Charles Martinet Thanks Fans For All The "Love And Kindness"

BrianJL

@GrailUK Right! To me, Mario had that Brooklyn-Italian accent like he did in the cartoons - not actually Italian. It was jarring to hear his first in-game voice and it was like that. Not that I dislike it - I love it and Charles - but it was a different and new take compared to what we knew before.

For the record, the first voice of Mario was Peter "Optimus Prime" Cullen in the Donkey Kong portions of the Saturday Supercade cartoon in 1983!

Re: Talking Point: Which Zelda Game Should You Play First?

BrianJL

It's hard not to say the original is it lays the groundwork for literally everything Zelda, however the "formula" really solidifies in A Link to the Past, so definitely one of those two. I jsut replayed A Link to the Past again and it never ceases to amaze - it's an absolute classic (though Zelda on NES is as well).

Re: Video: Digital Foundry's Technical Analysis Of Splatoon 3 On Switch

BrianJL

@Abes3 Nintendo has always known how to get the most out of their hardware, though there was a time when the third parties would step-up and also put out some top of the line stuff. Now most of them just want to make lazy ports. Cross-platform games can never fully leverage one specific hardware's strengths, which is why first-party titles always seem to be the best.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Splatoon 3

BrianJL

Sounds like more of the same, but with Splatoon, the same is great! I didn't play Splatoon 2 as much as I did the first one - just too many other things going on, but I still think this will be worthwhile, though I may clear my deck a little before buying it.

Re: Talking Point: What Was Your First Mario Kart Game?

BrianJL

SNES, baby - but I never owned it until much later. I rented it many times though, but since my mom worked at Blockbuster it was free! I first owned MK64, and it was actually the old demo copy from the same store - it says "Not for Resale" on it. That's okay, I didn't buy it nor sell it!

Re: Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection - The New Gold Standard For Retro Compilations

BrianJL

Sounds like a great package, but it's a little pricey for me considering that I actually have a lot of these on the original cartridges. The arcade perfect ports are the main draw for me, as well as the Game Boy games, since I don't have those, but I will wait for a sale. I am glad to see though that they put a lot of extras, etc. into this and it really looks fantastic!

Re: Poll: What's The Best Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Game?

BrianJL

@Sinton I've cheated it with a Game Genie, but yeah, it get's pretty crazy in there. I actually only got there legit once as usually the Technodrome Boss fight in level 5 does me in! If I spend the time and just load up on scrolls for every turtle, I can do the job.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Game?

BrianJL

@Sinton It's just hard to people who weren't there - if you pick it up cold today it's frustrating. Me, I can do the underwater level without taking a hit! Seriously. Usually though I just power through it for the sake of speed and load up on pizza in the next stage. Actually though, I nver beat the game either - the last leve just always got me - and I put in some hours on that game for sure.

I do hate when popular Internet thought becomes the assumed de facto position of all fans though - super annoying. That's why I prefer positive content over negative stuff that just tears down stuff.

Re: Talking Point: How Were You Introduced To Metroid?

BrianJL

I go back far enough that it wasn't common knowledge that Samus was a woman. I hadn't finished teh game when the Justin Bailey code blew that wide open. It was fun to play around with that code though as it enabled me to get further into the game and learn more about it.

Re: Feature: Resident Evil Netflix Review: Wesker Steals A Show That Lacks Bite

BrianJL

The thing about adapting video games is that narratively movies/television are so different than video games that it is inevitable that changes need to be made. Video games tell a story through player action - they have to be interactive. It is hard to adapt that to a linear medium.

That said, that doesn't make this or any other adaptation any good. More often than not they fail, because of the above among other things. Honestly, I'm not sure why they try. If I want to experience Resident Evil, well, I can play them!

Re: Rumour: Metroid Prime Remaster Apparently Lined Up For November, Prime 2 And 3 To Follow

BrianJL

@chapu2006 Well, but, what's the difference in this and the HD ports of old Zelda games? It's a full game, remastered and usually with some decent enhancements. Not everyone will want to pay "full price" for them, but many will. Why shouldn't Nintendo charge what they can get for them? I'm not saying I would be happy about it, but I get it. They aren't under any obligation to sell them at a value price.
