My favorite easter egg is the blue-hued Super Scope beaing used as a sort of "De-Evolution" gun. Like, it wasn't exactly the same, but that's gotta be a reference to the live-action movie, right?
Man, I just snagged SF6 at Target on clearance for 17 bucks! It hadn't been on my radar, but at that price, with all the Year 1 & 2 DLC, I had to do it. I haven't gotten into playing it yet though, but I hear it's good.
I think it all comes down to differing expectations. The SMB movies are indeed "kids' movies" - though I personally can appreciate plenty of things made for kidsm, be it from when I was one or even now (I watch a lot of cartoons!). Compare that to the type of output from a studio like Pixar - where they are targeting more than only kids - that's the "8 to 80" demographic so to speak. The movies are kid-friendly, but a bit more complex with more emotional punch. I think that is what many may have expected from the SMB movies - but that's not what they are, for better or worse. To me, they are perfectly fine being that. They are certainly well-made and accomplish their goal - they deserve their success, even if they aren't in the same league as Up or Coco.
I'm going tomorrow night. I actually do get a lot of the criticism for the first movie too - it's a little milquetoast really, but it's still decent. Like, there's nothing BAD about it, it just doens't really swing for the fences. My hope is that they were just getting a baseline, and the Galaxy will have a little more punch. It'll probably be fun either way, but I do wish they'd shoot for just a little more.
@DennyCrane Right. Some outlets are probably reviewing Super Mario Bros. Wonder as a whole, which obviously would get a higher score. Here, I think we are just talking about the DLC. That makes a Metacritic average a little skewed thugh.
@SBandy1 At leastwith these you can just buy the add-on if you already have the Switch game. The Wii U ports required re-buying the entire game! I swore to myself I wouldn't do it for any game I already had on Wii U, but then there'd be a sale....
I started with 4 - it's the best one and an all-time great game. I never could get into RE before that due to the control/camera style. RE4 changed that and made me love it and helped me to "get" survival horror games in general. I got the game after a long day out Christmas shopping - found it for like 20 bucks (Gamecube) and bought it for myself. I got home and played it late at night - that first jump-scare really got me, and I understood. RE4 is the game if you want to convert someone to the series.
This is looking pretty good. I love He-Man, but some of these recent pixel-art beat-'em-ups have been a little lackluster (looking at you G.I. Joe!). I hope this one hits the mark more like Shredder's Revenge did.
I mean, New 3DS XL is the most capable way to go, but I do actually prefer the physical look and feel of the New 2DS XL. Personally, I really enjoyed the 3D features though, so N3DSXL for me!
Oh, I was there. A friend of mine had it - and we played and played and played. We would take turns on the same file - one playing while the other made maps. I remember in the final dungeon having a hunch and telling my buddy to bomb a wall, even though the map showed no room there. Sure enough we found a secret. Fun stuff!
@electrolite77 Nintendo has always been weird - it's what makes them Nintendo. And yeah, sometimes it misfires like the original VB, but when it hits it hits! It's great that they don't play it safe.
I've been goofing around with it using my Labo VR kit and Switch 1 (which apparently now has developed some battery issues), and I'm having fun. I have an original unit, and the new setup replicates it pretty well! Wario Land is obviously the stand out and a game worth playing, but I always really enjoyed Galactic Pinball and Red Alarm. Innsmouth Mansion is one I've never played, but it's not that great - maybe I just don't know what I'm doing. Upcoming games of note will be Mario Clash and Vertical Force - both pretty fun, though Clash would be asbolutely phenomonal with two players.
While the VB as a console obviously had it's share of issues and had lacking appeal, it's good to see some of the good games getting the recognition that they have deserved. There are some really funt titles - they were just locked behind awkward hardware.
I was fine with it until I am reading in the comments that there is a Goemon collection that is NOT releasing outside of Japan! Come on Konami - people over here like Goemon too!
@Pak-Man Yeah, I've been in the same boat. I'd get this in a second and love Machine Games work, but my PC is getting a bit ragged these days and with RAM prices being what they are, I just haven't upgraded.
I looked at some pictures too and the plastic/lens part looks to be nearly identical in both units. The cardboard has some different shapes to it, but the lenses are the important part. I am sure someone will test it as soon as the games drop!
I can't really see why it should be any different though. Obviously it won't fit Switch 2, but if it's just dividing the screen in half to see through the eyepeice, the it should work the same. I suppose the alignent could be different. I feel like "not officially supported" just means we didn't test it and have no intention to.
@cvrator Ah, the ol' cycloid pad - It's my favorite controller and is great - for certain games anyway. I loved it for Contra or Megaman or any other run-n-gun NES game. It's not so good for Super Mario, etc. I liked that the turbo wasn't toggled on and off, but just available as needed. Part of my attachment to it too was that it was a bit of a special gift to me. I still have my original one.
There are some really good games on the system, just not enough to justify the existence of the console. Still, there is a lot of fun to be had here. I had planned to get the cardboard viewer, but would have gone for the plastic in a second if it had the controller - it's actually a great pre-analog controller!
@tseliot I had one back int he day and I used to put the stand on backward and lay down. The stand would kind of fit around my head to stablize it. Not ideal, but it worked. Honestly, the carbboard option is probably better that the real unit, from a play-position standpoint.
To explain to some, the original VB used red LED's AND had red lenses. The replica appears to have the red lenses to be accurate, but that won't work with other colors, so you pull that part off and use the clear lenses if you want to see other colors. The cardboard unit appears to use only clear lenses, so the color change will work without the need to remove that peice.
Honestly, you might get werid effects if you put the red lenses on top of another color, but we'll see.
@JayJ I think it most likely works by splitting the screen and showing the offset images for the righ tand left eyes. The lenses in the peripheral focus that. It doesn't seem like it can "know" if it's in the shell (especially the cardboard one), so you could just look at one half of the screen That may not be ideal though, but I don't see why not. That said, it would be nice if they had an option for a full-screen, flat presentation.
@N00BiSH Exactly. The games were designed so that depth was a primary driver of the gameplay - you know how Nintendo is. Are they playable in 2D? Sure, but you definitely lose something.
@AussieMcBucket No, it's falling blocks. You clear the whole layer in the main game, and you can move the camera around to see everything (blocks are wireframe until they lock in). There is a mode where you have to make like "Racecar" and you are given specific peices in order. I can't remember exactly, but you stack the blocks into the (very blocky) basic shape. At least I think so. I actually have it, but haven't messed with it in some time. That was the best mode though.
Now, V-Tetris was only a Japanese release and is a different game. It's regular Tetris except the screen "wraps" around and you can slide it side to side with the L/R buttons. I got that super-cheap somewhere, and it's pretty cool!
@Moonlessky Honestly, with the cardboard version, it would be a lot more comfortable. I know it's teh cheap option and basically jsut a Labo kit, but it's better from a usability standpoint.
The unreleased games are cool! I remember reading about them in Nintendo Power. Zero Racers was originally called G-Zero and is an F-Zero spin-off. D-Hopper was called Dragon Hopper (not sure why they removed the word Dragon, but anwyay), and was another cool looking title. I feel like these "second generation" games might have upped the game for VB, but sadly they never came out.
I MIGHT go for it if the Koopaling missions are substantial. The multiplayer looks fun, but I am not sure I can get any friends in on this kind of game. I'd only need to get the upgrade though, so I'm thinking about it - will wait for reviews and breakdowns once it is actually out.
Are the Koopaling missions like new single player? The multiplayer stuff looks fun, but I doubt I have anyone to enjoy it with. If there is a decent amount of single player levels though, the total package may be worth the upgrade.
You know, I get that the price increases have to do with production costs, tariffs, etc. and all that, but the least they could do is include more digital functionality that wouldn't be affected by any of that! Make it worthwhile to get them and the price wouldn't be so hard to swallow.
I do have one that I bought back in they day - when it came out. Yeah, I'll admit it. I can also admit that I had a lot of fun with it, though it maybe wasn't worth the price. At the time it was quite immersive, and there were some good games. Wario Land obviously, but actually Galactic Pinball is a ton of fun, and I probably played that the most. I eventualy got Mario Clash pretty cheap, and it's really good too - though it it had two player it would be the best game on the system! I'm glad to see the VB at least getting a little respect, even if just as a curiosity.
There have been cases from well before AI where models in advertising would have a leg cut out or something because they were using composited images. That's the classic "photoshop job" - so mistakes can be made if it's AI or not. I might imagine that these images are heavily manipulated - and possibly by AI for sure, but I'm not sure we can know for certain.
I do wish the Joycon 2 had more color on them. I get going with primarily balck, but it's too subtle. The buttons should match the colors at least. They need a little pop!

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?
It was decent - probably a little better than the first one. It's still pretty simple, which is fine. It's exactly what it's supposed to be.
