Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?

BrianJL

I think it all comes down to differing expectations. The SMB movies are indeed "kids' movies" - though I personally can appreciate plenty of things made for kidsm, be it from when I was one or even now (I watch a lot of cartoons!). Compare that to the type of output from a studio like Pixar - where they are targeting more than only kids - that's the "8 to 80" demographic so to speak. The movies are kid-friendly, but a bit more complex with more emotional punch. I think that is what many may have expected from the SMB movies - but that's not what they are, for better or worse. To me, they are perfectly fine being that. They are certainly well-made and accomplish their goal - they deserve their success, even if they aren't in the same league as Up or Coco.

Re: So, Will you Be Watching The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?

BrianJL

I'm going tomorrow night. I actually do get a lot of the criticism for the first movie too - it's a little milquetoast really, but it's still decent. Like, there's nothing BAD about it, it just doens't really swing for the fences. My hope is that they were just getting a baseline, and the Galaxy will have a little more punch. It'll probably be fun either way, but I do wish they'd shoot for just a little more.

Re: Feature: Where The Heck Do You Start If You've Never Played Resident Evil?

BrianJL

I started with 4 - it's the best one and an all-time great game. I never could get into RE before that due to the control/camera style. RE4 changed that and made me love it and helped me to "get" survival horror games in general. I got the game after a long day out Christmas shopping - found it for like 20 bucks (Gamecube) and bought it for myself. I got home and played it late at night - that first jump-scare really got me, and I understood. RE4 is the game if you want to convert someone to the series.

Re: Poll: What's Your Favourite 3DS Model?

BrianJL

I mean, New 3DS XL is the most capable way to go, but I do actually prefer the physical look and feel of the New 2DS XL. Personally, I really enjoyed the 3D features though, so N3DSXL for me!

Re: Review: Virtual Boy For Switch 1 & 2 - Is It Really Worth Revisting Nintendo's Greatest Folly?

BrianJL

I've been goofing around with it using my Labo VR kit and Switch 1 (which apparently now has developed some battery issues), and I'm having fun. I have an original unit, and the new setup replicates it pretty well! Wario Land is obviously the stand out and a game worth playing, but I always really enjoyed Galactic Pinball and Red Alarm. Innsmouth Mansion is one I've never played, but it's not that great - maybe I just don't know what I'm doing. Upcoming games of note will be Mario Clash and Vertical Force - both pretty fun, though Clash would be asbolutely phenomonal with two players.

Re: Preview: Five Takeaways From My Time With Virtual Boy On Nintendo Switch Online

BrianJL

@cvrator Ah, the ol' cycloid pad - It's my favorite controller and is great - for certain games anyway. I loved it for Contra or Megaman or any other run-n-gun NES game. It's not so good for Super Mario, etc. I liked that the turbo wasn't toggled on and off, but just available as needed. Part of my attachment to it too was that it was a bit of a special gift to me. I still have my original one.

Re: Switch Online's Virtual Boy Adding New Feature To Change Screen Colour "Later This Year"

BrianJL

To explain to some, the original VB used red LED's AND had red lenses. The replica appears to have the red lenses to be accurate, but that won't work with other colors, so you pull that part off and use the clear lenses if you want to see other colors. The cardboard unit appears to use only clear lenses, so the color change will work without the need to remove that peice.

Honestly, you might get werid effects if you put the red lenses on top of another color, but we'll see.

Re: Two Cancelled Virtual Boy Games Coming To NSO In 2026, Including F-Zero Spin-Off

BrianJL

@JayJ I think it most likely works by splitting the screen and showing the offset images for the righ tand left eyes. The lenses in the peripheral focus that. It doesn't seem like it can "know" if it's in the shell (especially the cardboard one), so you could just look at one half of the screen That may not be ideal though, but I don't see why not. That said, it would be nice if they had an option for a full-screen, flat presentation.

Re: Two Cancelled Virtual Boy Games Coming To NSO In 2026, Including F-Zero Spin-Off

BrianJL

@AussieMcBucket No, it's falling blocks. You clear the whole layer in the main game, and you can move the camera around to see everything (blocks are wireframe until they lock in). There is a mode where you have to make like "Racecar" and you are given specific peices in order. I can't remember exactly, but you stack the blocks into the (very blocky) basic shape. At least I think so. I actually have it, but haven't messed with it in some time. That was the best mode though.

Now, V-Tetris was only a Japanese release and is a different game. It's regular Tetris except the screen "wraps" around and you can slide it side to side with the L/R buttons. I got that super-cheap somewhere, and it's pretty cool!

Re: Nintendo Announces Launch Line-Up For Switch Online Virtual Boy

BrianJL

The unreleased games are cool! I remember reading about them in Nintendo Power. Zero Racers was originally called G-Zero and is an F-Zero spin-off. D-Hopper was called Dragon Hopper (not sure why they removed the word Dragon, but anwyay), and was another cool looking title. I feel like these "second generation" games might have upped the game for VB, but sadly they never came out.

Re: Opinion: The Nintendo Console Nobody Wanted To Review Returns Soon, And I'm Here For It, Again

BrianJL

I do have one that I bought back in they day - when it came out. Yeah, I'll admit it. I can also admit that I had a lot of fun with it, though it maybe wasn't worth the price. At the time it was quite immersive, and there were some good games. Wario Land obviously, but actually Galactic Pinball is a ton of fun, and I probably played that the most. I eventualy got Mario Clash pretty cheap, and it's really good too - though it it had two player it would be the best game on the system! I'm glad to see the VB at least getting a little respect, even if just as a curiosity.

Re: Nintendo Accused Of Using AI Images In New 'My Mario' Marketing

BrianJL

There have been cases from well before AI where models in advertising would have a leg cut out or something because they were using composited images. That's the classic "photoshop job" - so mistakes can be made if it's AI or not. I might imagine that these images are heavily manipulated - and possibly by AI for sure, but I'm not sure we can know for certain.
