Ehh, freedom isn't everything. Some games benefit from more structure. Both types of games can be great. I don't mind if they continue to make them open-world, but I would like more traditional style games as well, even a return to 2D. There is no reason to dismiss those kinds of games as strictly "nostalgic."
@JJtheTexan Oh yeah, the US manuals made a mess of things. It's nice though that they try to include some of that. Even seeing the Probotector stuff is cool.
@JJtheTexan In the Japanese story "Red Falcon" was always a front for the alien invasion. The alien leader itself was not named that. The US instruction manuals made a lot of changes or mistranslations, including changing the names of the main characters. They kind of cleaned this up in Contra 4, and it looks like WayForward is doing more of that and some new world-building too.
Odama is a really interesting game. I have it, and while I did enjoy playing it, it is very challenging and comples. I just remember shouting into the microphine, "PRESS FORWARD!" to command my army.
@EarthboundBenjy Some of the latter-day Atari 2600 games are pretty good, like Solaris, which could almost be an NES game. You are right though that most won't hold one's attention too long. Some of the best games were ports anyway that have much better versions that you can play today. Why play 2600 Pac-Man when you can play an arcade perfect one? That said, I think Atari has the right mindset. Just do what they do and keep it classic. It seems to be working.
My Scarecrow Song was Smoke on the Water. I can't remember excatly how I played it, but just the simple riff. Da-Da-DAH, Da-Da-Duh-DAH. I tacked a note ont he end too because you had to.
I voted for the original game, but it's really because that can be most easily molded into an original story, which is really what they should do. They can tell that story - of the kidnapped princess and chosen one in a very broad sense, and fit that to what it needs to be a cinematic experience. Everything else would just get too convoluted.
The casting of the young versions is heavily contingent on who is playign the older versions - assuming they are even doing a story that would have both. That said, they should go with relatively unknown actors, maybe someone well-known for Gannon. Link and Zelda definitely have to be on the younger side. Some of those choices for "Young Link" above should really just be playing actual Link!
@Alpha008 This is exactly right. Live Service games are a commitment and there is only so much time in the audience to go around. I never even got into Splatoon 3 due to time, and that's one of the most innoccuous live-service style games around!
They did the same with Hollywood blockbusters too. It was one thing when one or two a year came out - people would go see them. But when 12 movies a year all have budgets of $500 Million plus and are expected to break $1 Billion to be considered profitable, many of them are going to fail to do that. There is only so much wallet-share out there.
@anothergamer100 I agree. It takes place in the WarioWare world and uses the characters, but the gameplay is totally different - it's a spin-off. It's not bad either, but it lacks that certain special quality that most WarioWare games have.
@MaxPlastic I agree. I just played it a little and was refreshing my memory before I spoke. The "trap room" candles do in fact look different so it is easy to tell what they are. Also, the game is fine - the level design isn't super creative or anything, but it's decent enough for a playthrough.
Legends - nice. I didn't hate that game like a lot of people seem to. I mean, it's decent enough. It was a shame that Konaimi had basically disowned it. I look forward to playing it.
Honestly, Ultimate was pretty, well, Ultimate. I think the next iteration should really be something different. Threre's just no need for anything "bigger" at this point. I think they should just let it be for a while and push into a different direction, like an adventure game with crossover characters or even Super Smash Kart, which there are already seed sof in MK8/Deluxe.
@HammerKirby Exactly. There IS a non All-Stars version of "The Lost Levels" out there. There is really no reason to be pedantic about it eeither - we all know the game we're talking about.
Most of them aren't terribly difficult overall, but they will have difficult elements in them. If you want to 100% you will find challenge in most of them. That said, The Lost Levels is just downright cheap!
@Member_the_game I am on World 2 as well and trying to get everything before I move on. I also think that hte game is GREAT - so fun and addictive. I enjoyed the NSMB series, but this one feels a little extra special.
Okay, so I expected teh game to be good, but maybe it was being overhyped. After a couple of hours with it, WOWIE ZOWIE! It really is spectacular. It's like SMB3 and SMW had a baby. It's got everything and then some. Those battle arena levels where it sets each stage with the musical queue from Mario Bros. - They thought of everything!
I played the demo at Target the other day. I'm not surprised as it felt great. It's more 2-D Mario, but with some twists and surprises, just as it should be. I am looking forward to it!
My friend was showing me this on Switch last night, and yeah, it definitely lacks the graphical wow factor of the other versions, it seemed perfectly playable. There are a few stutters here and there, but nothing that bad. It feels like people are making a bigger deal about it than it is. Of course the Switch version will be a technical downgrade, but the gameplay is what matters. If they can smooth it out a little with a patch, it'll be great.
Wow, forget the game, you just trashed He-Man and Thundercats int he first paragraph! That was the golden age of cartoons, sir, and they are incredible even today.
It is too bad this game isn't living up ti it's potential on switch. I might have been into it if it weren't a roguelike anyway.
@KayFiOS Yeah, I wouldn't mind paying "full price" if it included more content - either a collection of other games, bonus levels, new content. A level editor would be pretty cool for a game like this.
All I can say to those who have never played it, this is a GREAT game! It's loads of fun and one of the best on the GBA. I never liked the March of the Minis style as much (though those are good too). It would have been great to get this as a compilation - maybe they will at least add more levels.
I know that GX and AX are the same game, but nothing beat finding that full, sit-down, motion AX cab. That ws a rush to play! They never had it near me, but I played it on the road a few times. I played a ton of GX too of course. I have all of the games except for Climax.
I really liked it! There were some remakes, but all ofr great games. Does it even matter if you haven't played it in 20 years? I'm up for giving them another whirl with modern bells and whistles. I might have liked a real showstopper, but I am very happy with what we got.
I played a little over my lunch, and I thought it was pretty fun! It feels right too. As someone who put a LOT of time into the SNES F-Zero, I know the tracks, and the shortcuts, etc. I'll be playing this a bit for sure.
Well, it's a remake, but it's a remake of an EXCELLENT game - one of the best. I preferred this style to the "March of the Minis" style, though both were fun.
I mena, I know everyone was hoping for somethign more like X/GX, but honestly it looks pretty awesome! At least they haven't forgotten the franchise completely.
I don't understand how they can change this for existing lisences and products. Going forward, sure, they can do what they want, but they are materially altering the agreement that devs signed up for. That sounds like a lawsuit to me.
I'll vote for He-Man as I think it lends itself best to the style. It can include She-Ra too, all done in 80's style. I'd be pretty up fro anything though if it's as good as Shredder's Revenge is!

Re: Soapbox: Donkey Konga Introduced Me To One Of My Favourite Songs Ever
@OstianOwl Well, Ska is awesome! I'm more of a Madness/English Beat kind of guy, but the Bosstones are cool too.

@mr12calvin Yes, or something along the lines of Diddy Kong Racing. That would be a nice evolution for the series.
