Well, if these two things do indeed happen, it would be lovely if they then slapped the whole lot on a Switch 2 cart. I've never played either game, but a complete two game package could finally force my arm!
I really like this game, but to begin with I found it got way too busy for me to fully enjoy. I played around with the settings and ended up with a config that I was happy with though.
Not sure about the whole 'only pinball game you'll ever need' thing. Please don't say anything like that to my wife, because I'm clearly in need of my 900th virtual pinball table!
I'm intrigued to know whether newly released Arcade Archives titles are limited to 720p in handheld on Switch 2, or whether they recognise the newer system and display in 1080p.
Sort of a general question for most Switch 1 games released post-Switch 2 launch really, I guess.
In my old age - and with a busy family life - I've had to stop taking an OCD approach to gaming as I'd never play anything through to any form of completion if I did. I simply don't have the sustained available time. If I want to see a lot of a game I'm better off rattling through it than painstakingly going over a small part until life diverts me and months later I finally come back and can't even remember what I was doing or why.
Speaking personally, I don't think I've ever intentionally taken a screenshot in a game but I use the back buttons on my Steam Deck every single time I play on it. For first person games that use the two sticks I find them much easier to use for actions like jump, duck, open etc than the face buttons, as it means I never have to take my thumb off the right stick.
This process has me confused and I wish it didn't have to be done immediately. My son has always used my Switch and has some save games stored on it, like various Pokemon games. We have both ordered a Switch 2. I would like to transfer his save games to his new Switch 2 but it sounds like I also have to transfer everything else? And if I do that, will I then not be able to transfer all of my games to my Switch 2? My head hurts.
Wait, am I missing something, or is there not a picture of it with a Switch, Switch OLED and Switch Lite?!
Side note, if you turn that Nomad on it will fully drain the Switch 2 battery in 20 mins, along with its own stock of 48 AA batteries. Will also make the building lights dim.
The Steam Deck is a fairly impressive bit of tech but my favourite two elements (beyond the ability to access a huge library of games I already owned but desired more flexible access to) are the dual track pads and the ability to quickly remap controls on a per game basis. The control remapping is brilliant, allowing just about anything to be tweaked and the gyro and rear buttons to be quickly used with any game. It sounds like Switch 2 will provide per game custom controls, so let's hope it's as flexible as the Steam config. Also, mouse mode may provide some of the functionality of the track pads.
It does amuse me that people seem to picture Nintendo as a group of about 20 people in a little office in Japan, developing Mario games and deciding who to sue next. Nintendo is a huge company with branches across multiple continents. Nintendo America's legal team can sue someone without checking in with Miyamoto first. Some big companies don't even have in-house legal teams for this sort of thing, they are represented by legal firms who can action takedowns and legal proceedings independently.
It reminds me of when The Verve were sued over Bittersweet Symphony copying a Stones song. Someone asked Keith Richards about it and he said he didn't know the case had been brought and actually felt a bit bad for the guys. Something along the lines of "We have lawyers who do all this stuff by themselves.". Of course he could be full of it, but the wider point remains.
Now I'm not saying I like the system, I don't, I'm just pointing out roughly how it works. And it will be different in every territory due to differing trademark protection laws. Hence why Nintendo rarely ever sues anyone in Japan.
Regardless of the rights and wrongs in a situation like this, I really struggle to see what someone gains from having a public moan on a podcast, other than 5 minutes of exposure. Long term it will just put prospective employers off employing you. Odd choices people make.
While I agree with the sentiment that you got a lot more bang for your buck with compilations back in the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox era, they usually featured fuzzy visuals and lots of emulation issues, especially with the sound. Personally I'll take paying a little more for a better quality presentation of the games.
As for this collection itself... Many all time favourites of mine on here, so I'm definitely going for it.
This game seems like a perfect choice for a remake. I wish more remakes were of good ideas that weren't executed as well as they could have been first time around. This is even more true for film remakes.
All of the Japanese Kirby Game Boy covers are awesome. I own the lot. I don't know how anyone could think this cover is bad. It's so fabulously Japanese!
Sega Bits did a pretty good one. Article claimed a study had proven that all the bright blue skies in Sega games like Daytona have actually been damaging our screens and eyes for years.
I get that the shop is a mess full of junk, but personally I just use sites like this to discover games I might want to play and then PSPrices to monitor them for discounts. They email me when a game I have wishlisted goes on sale and I then open the eShop and search for it. Works for me and I never have to wade through any of the shovelware.
As someone who has owned Quake II on Steam for years, I love that the game just updates and all this content gets added. They don't charge a penny for upgrading to the new remaster.
This looks nice, and I may pick one up down the line, but what I REALLY want from some controller manufacturer is a controller or JoyCon alternative with a digital stick like the NEOGEO Pocket had.
There are so many controllers out there, for systems new and old, and no one ever makes one with a wonderful little clicky digital stick instead of a d-pad (or better still in the position where the analogue stick is).
My dream is a digital stick JoyCon that works wirelessly so that I can play TATE shmups with it in the FlipGrip.
A classic series of games, but I hate all this limited release crap we get in the West, with different versions for sale in different places, with some lacking the games featured on others. And somehow these companies sell themselves like they're the champions of game preservation...
I think I'll pick up a Japanese copy of the complete collection. Same as with Wonder Boy.
It would be nice if Disney created some hype for this by releasing a collection of all the Master System/Mega Drive Sega/Disney games. Castle of Illusion, Land of Illusion, Legend of Illusion, Lucky Dime Caper and Deep Duck Trouble from the SMS and Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion and QuackShot from the Mega Drive. They can keep Fantasia, unless they want to completely fix it for the release.
This collection has been handled really well and I love that they keep improving it. That said, I wish there was a way to add Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Return to New York in, as I reckon that hack massively improved the original NES game. I obviously get why that's not going to happen though.
@larryisaman I do use some community layouts, but I also love tweaking the controls myself. I particularly find that with a bit of effort first person games can be tweaked from really difficult to control to pretty much perfect, which is saying something as I've always been pretty much a keyboard and mouse or nothing guy when it comes to FPS. Also, why doesn't every controller have those four back buttons?!
There are many things I like about my Steam Deck, but by far and away the #1 feature is the ability to configure every single aspect of the controls on a per game basis. You can change any button to be any controller button, keyboard key or mouse button, as well as adding gyro aiming to any game and tweaking every aspect of it to the nth degree. It has been an absolute revelation to me.
@Rambler I'd love Parasol Stars on Switch (along with all the other Bubble Bobble sequels), but it wasn't an arcade game so won't be joining the Arcade Archives lineup. I'd love a complete Bubble Bobble collection that included all Bubble, Puzzle, Rainbow Islands and Parasol Stars games.
Shame they can't patch in the rom hack Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Return to New York for the original NES game though. It's a great hack by guitarpalooz (can be found on romhacking.net) and I actually much prefer it to the original release. (obviously I understand why this isn't going to happen)
@BulkSlash To be fair, the game runs at 900p 30fps with frame pacing issues on Xbox One, so they were unlikely to get the Switch version running super well. I'm not sure it's so much an issue of not caring about Switch as a lack of the technical ability to optimise the game to run well on any system. Even the PS5 version runs at 1080p/60 (with the framerate not always reaching 60) in performance mode.
I came close to buying this on Steam but was put off by reviews that said there's no AI at all. The CPU cars are on rails and just stick to set routes around the track.
I love the idea of an epic JRPG, but I struggle to finish 13 hour games these days, so a 130+ hour game is never going to happen. It's especially an issue with RPGs as I end up having gaps in my playthroughs and then can never remember what I was supposed to be doing! Glad they put the effort in on all platforms though.
