Re: Poll: Do You Three-Star-Gold Every Mario World Grand Prix Before Moving On To The Next?

BionicDodo

In my old age - and with a busy family life - I've had to stop taking an OCD approach to gaming as I'd never play anything through to any form of completion if I did. I simply don't have the sustained available time. If I want to see a lot of a game I'm better off rattling through it than painstakingly going over a small part until life diverts me and months later I finally come back and can't even remember what I was doing or why.

Re: PSA: Got A Switch 2 Pro Controller? This Little Capture Trick Is A Game-Changer

BionicDodo

Speaking personally, I don't think I've ever intentionally taken a screenshot in a game but I use the back buttons on my Steam Deck every single time I play on it. For first person games that use the two sticks I find them much easier to use for actions like jump, duck, open etc than the face buttons, as it means I never have to take my thumb off the right stick.

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 System Transfer: How To Move All Games, Saves, Profiles From Switch 1

BionicDodo

This process has me confused and I wish it didn't have to be done immediately. My son has always used my Switch and has some save games stored on it, like various Pokemon games. We have both ordered a Switch 2. I would like to transfer his save games to his new Switch 2 but it sounds like I also have to transfer everything else? And if I do that, will I then not be able to transfer all of my games to my Switch 2? My head hurts.

Re: Opinion: Steam Deck Fans Are Seriously Underestimating The Switch 2

BionicDodo

The Steam Deck is a fairly impressive bit of tech but my favourite two elements (beyond the ability to access a huge library of games I already owned but desired more flexible access to) are the dual track pads and the ability to quickly remap controls on a per game basis. The control remapping is brilliant, allowing just about anything to be tweaked and the gyro and rear buttons to be quickly used with any game. It sounds like Switch 2 will provide per game custom controls, so let's hope it's as flexible as the Steam config. Also, mouse mode may provide some of the functionality of the track pads.

Re: Random: Local Supermarket Wins Trademark Battle Against Nintendo

BionicDodo

It does amuse me that people seem to picture Nintendo as a group of about 20 people in a little office in Japan, developing Mario games and deciding who to sue next. Nintendo is a huge company with branches across multiple continents. Nintendo America's legal team can sue someone without checking in with Miyamoto first. Some big companies don't even have in-house legal teams for this sort of thing, they are represented by legal firms who can action takedowns and legal proceedings independently.

It reminds me of when The Verve were sued over Bittersweet Symphony copying a Stones song. Someone asked Keith Richards about it and he said he didn't know the case had been brought and actually felt a bit bad for the guys. Something along the lines of "We have lawyers who do all this stuff by themselves.". Of course he could be full of it, but the wider point remains.

Now I'm not saying I like the system, I don't, I'm just pointing out roughly how it works. And it will be different in every territory due to differing trademark protection laws. Hence why Nintendo rarely ever sues anyone in Japan.

Re: Taito Milestones 3 Finally Locks In A Western Release Date On Switch

BionicDodo

While I agree with the sentiment that you got a lot more bang for your buck with compilations back in the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox era, they usually featured fuzzy visuals and lots of emulation issues, especially with the sound. Personally I'll take paying a little more for a better quality presentation of the games.

As for this collection itself... Many all time favourites of mine on here, so I'm definitely going for it.

Re: WTF: What Exactly Is This Switch eShop Garbage, Nintendo?

BionicDodo

I get that the shop is a mess full of junk, but personally I just use sites like this to discover games I might want to play and then PSPrices to monitor them for discounts. They email me when a game I have wishlisted goes on sale and I then open the eShop and search for it. Works for me and I never have to wade through any of the shovelware.

Re: The Nitro Deck Is A Stunning Switch Controller Grip Promising "Zero Stick Drift"

BionicDodo

This looks nice, and I may pick one up down the line, but what I REALLY want from some controller manufacturer is a controller or JoyCon alternative with a digital stick like the NEOGEO Pocket had.

There are so many controllers out there, for systems new and old, and no one ever makes one with a wonderful little clicky digital stick instead of a d-pad (or better still in the position where the analogue stick is).

My dream is a digital stick JoyCon that works wirelessly so that I can play TATE shmups with it in the FlipGrip.

Re: RayStorm X RayCrisis HD Collection Brings Two Taito Shmup Masterpieces To Switch

BionicDodo

A classic series of games, but I hate all this limited release crap we get in the West, with different versions for sale in different places, with some lacking the games featured on others. And somehow these companies sell themselves like they're the champions of game preservation...

I think I'll pick up a Japanese copy of the complete collection. Same as with Wonder Boy.

Re: Disney Illusion Island Pays "Homage" To Castle Of Illusion, Says Creative Director

BionicDodo

[Engage broken record mode]

It would be nice if Disney created some hype for this by releasing a collection of all the Master System/Mega Drive Sega/Disney games. Castle of Illusion, Land of Illusion, Legend of Illusion, Lucky Dime Caper and Deep Duck Trouble from the SMS and Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion and QuackShot from the Mega Drive. They can keep Fantasia, unless they want to completely fix it for the release.

Re: Random: GoldenEye Control Troubles On Switch? This Simple Joy-Con Swap Trick Is The Answer

BionicDodo

@larryisaman I do use some community layouts, but I also love tweaking the controls myself. I particularly find that with a bit of effort first person games can be tweaked from really difficult to control to pretty much perfect, which is saying something as I've always been pretty much a keyboard and mouse or nothing guy when it comes to FPS. Also, why doesn't every controller have those four back buttons?!

Re: Random: GoldenEye Control Troubles On Switch? This Simple Joy-Con Swap Trick Is The Answer

BionicDodo

There are many things I like about my Steam Deck, but by far and away the #1 feature is the ability to configure every single aspect of the controls on a per game basis. You can change any button to be any controller button, keyboard key or mouse button, as well as adding gyro aiming to any game and tweaking every aspect of it to the nth degree. It has been an absolute revelation to me.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry's Technical Analysis Of Sonic Frontiers On Switch

BionicDodo

@BulkSlash To be fair, the game runs at 900p 30fps with frame pacing issues on Xbox One, so they were unlikely to get the Switch version running super well. I'm not sure it's so much an issue of not caring about Switch as a lack of the technical ability to optimise the game to run well on any system. Even the PS5 version runs at 1080p/60 (with the framerate not always reaching 60) in performance mode.
