Re: Video: Are 2D Games Worth $60? Jon, Alex And Zion Share Their Own Thoughts

BionicDodo

For me it comes down to 3 things...

1. What were the production costs of the game compared to games like Odyssey and BotW? How big were the teams etc? Are these costs reflected in their relative prices?

2. How much content is there in the game? Does the game balance out its lack of complex 3D worlds with a wealth of content?

3. How does the content and quality compare to all of the wonderful £15-£25 2D indie games?

Started playing this today on Xbox Game Pass and really enjoying it. I didn't expect it to, but it just grabbed me.

@scully1888 Can the right analogue stick be used for acceleration in this? Having played with analogue triggers on Xbox I can't imagine playing it with a digital accelerator. Apologies if you mentioned it somewhere and I managed to miss it!

Re: Soapbox: Is It Time For Game Rental Stores To Return?

BionicDodo

To be fair, even first party Switch games cost less than SNES games and that's without even factoring in inflation. Even these new £70 PS5 games are actually cheaper than SNES games were when you take account of inflation. So I wouldn't say that games are really getting more and more expensive. Given all of the incredible games available at budget sale prices I'd say there's never been a cheaper time to be a gamer. No one had a backlog when I was younger!

Re: Review: Shantae - A Dated Dance That Completes The Set On Switch

BionicDodo

I don't get the complaints that this game shouldn't be judged by today's standards. Of course it should! It is a new release for a modern console in 2021! It is a lot easier to understand what a game's score means if all games are treated the same rather than judged against when they were originally released. People who are familiar with this game already don't need a review to aid their decision and people who have never played it benefit from a rose tinted specs free view.

If Pong were to be released as a standalone game on Switch should it get an automatic 10 for being the pinnacle of gaming at the time of its original release?

@duffmmann So far there are four Evercade cartridges that do indeed feature modern retro inspired indie games (although perhaps not as high profile as the ones you mention).

  • Xeno Crisis and Tanglewood
  • Mega Cat Studios Collection 1
  • Mega Cat Studios Collection 2
  • Indie Heroes Collection

The two Atari Lynx cartridges also feature some late to the party games made for the Lynx (as in games made this millennium).

I doubt these are actually targeted at kids or put on shelves in the children's department. The Doctor Who ones were in the adult section of my local bookshop. It's a bit like all those mock Famous Five books that you get these days, like 'Five Give Up the Booze'. Those books have the Enid Blyton signature on the front but obviously aren't written by Blyton and are aimed at adults who read the Five books when they were children.

Re: Rumour: Sonic Colors Remaster Listed In Localisation Company's Credits

It's funny, but I actually looked this game up on Wikipedia earlier to see if there was ever a PC port as I'd like to play it again but would prefer a higher resolution than the Wii version (Generations on PC plays great in 4k/60fps). After seeing there wasn't I decided to play it on the Wii U... Maybe I'll wait and see how this pans out before starting it.

Re: The Analogue Pocket Has Been Delayed Again

BionicDodo

I'm interested in both this and the Duo, but I'm trying to get my head around what all the trade/tax disputes between UK and US will mean for fees on top of the original price and shipping costs. Assuming I ever actually get the opportunity to buy either of course!

@BulkSlash To be fair, this one will also play Game Gear, PC Engine and NEOGEO Pocket games with the use of adapters.

Re: Feature: Can't Buy Super Mario 64 On Switch Anymore? Psst! The N64 Original Is Better

BionicDodo

I got a cheap RGB mod kit for my UK N64 (etim one) and as an owner of an OSSC I'm all good. The RGB is better than s-video and I didn't need to spend another £100+ on the HDMI adapter. OSSC has got cheaper recently too.

Note: I would love to get a US N64, but I have loads of Pal N64 games and just can't afford to start my collection again. Wish N64 was like my Master System, Mega Drive, SNES and Saturn and could just be forced to play UK games at 60Hz.
