Re: Metacritic Reveals "The Worst Video Games Of 2023"

westman98

The GameMill licensed games (and most tie-in licensed games in general) are worse than most of the games on this list, but that's because GameMill puts literally 0 effort and budget into those licensed games.

On the other hand, a game like Gollum or Quantum Error was developed with somewhat strong or moderate expectations of being a blockbuster title but ended up totally and utterly failing.

Re: GTA 6 On 'Switch 2' Would Be "Very Tricky To Pull Off", Says Digital Foundry

I just saw some gameplay footage of GTA Online on base PS4 and the game is a total mess: terrible frame rate, stuttering, and objects/environment failing to load properly when driving (which you will spend 40-50% of the game of the time doing). Honestly it almost reminded me of the terrible Arkham Knight port that just released on Switch.

So I guess porting GTAV on Switch would require some effort on Rockstar's behalf, which seems like they would never provide given the current state of GTAV on last-gen consoles.

@electrolite77
The best point of comparison for Switch 2 is probably the SteamDeck, which is comparable to a base PS4 in terms of raw GPU/teraflop performance but has a much better CPU, more RAM, and faster storage.

If course the comparison isn't 1-to-1 since Switch 2 is almost guaranteed to use an Nvidia chip (rather than AMD) so DLSS upscaling is practically guaranteed which should help a lot.

But yeah I wouldn't expect GTAVI on Switch 2 either way.

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Wins Best Action/Adventure Game At TGA 2023

@anoyonmus @RubyCarbuncle
Spider-Man 2 found it self being in a "jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none" situation. The game is great as the sum of its part but individual aspects were outclassed by other games.

That actually brings me to a complaint about The Game Awards: they should have more awards for technical achievements. Stuff like Ultrahand in TOTK or the sheer speed at which you can swing or fast travel in Spidey 2 are absolutely amazing but the people who make all of that possible will never receive any recognition. Games are computer programs after all, with programmers and software engineers to put everything together.

It's not like having too many additional awards will overwhelm the show since Geoff will just speed run through most of the awards in 30 seconds each lmao.

Re: Random: Sakurai Wanted The GameCube Controller To Include A Scroll Wheel

Nintendo once famously patented an implementation of scroll wheel shoulder buttons.

Hard to say how far this idea went but that device in the image looks suspiciously like a Switch (or more specifically, a Switch Lite) so Nintendo was probably toying with the idea of putting scroll wheel shoulder buttons in the Switch JoyCons itself at one point.

Re: Super Mario Bros. Wonder Also Had A Strong Start In The US

westman98

Given the sales trends for past Mario title, it was clear for a while that Wonder would never have the same massive launch sales that we saw with Zelda or Pokemon. The Switch install base is huge but that doesn't mean every game is going to obliterate sales records. Games like the Mario platformers will have good (but far from record-smashing) launch sales followed by a huge holiday boost and strong legs the following year.

On the other hand, Spider-Man 2 is basically Sony's Tears of the Kingdom (i.e. a highly-anticipated direct sequel to a previous highly-acclaimed massively successful open-world action-adventure game) so enormous launch sales were to be expected despite being a PS5 exclusive.

Re: Warner Bros. Says It's Focused On Transforming Its "Biggest Franchises" Into Live Services

westman98

Ironic given that Warner Bros' biggest video game launch ever by a wide margin is Hogwarts Legacy, which is a single-player open-world RPG with no live-service elements whatsoever. Prior to Hogwarts, their biggest game launch was the Batman Arkham games, which were single-player open-world games with no live service elements.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros' biggest live service game, Multiversus, was massively popular for about 15 minutes and then proceded to collapse so hard that it was discontinued (for the time being). Also, Mortal Kombat 1 is currently underperforming and Suicide Squad looks to be a historic failure comparable to the recent failures of the DC cinematic universe movies.
