Genshin Impact might win this lmao. Geoff may need to put rules in place about nominating years-old games for these awards, especially GaaS games where the developers can give players in-game rewards if they vote in real-life award shows.
Nintendo once famously patented an implementation of scroll wheel shoulder buttons.
Hard to say how far this idea went but that device in the image looks suspiciously like a Switch (or more specifically, a Switch Lite) so Nintendo was probably toying with the idea of putting scroll wheel shoulder buttons in the Switch JoyCons itself at one point.
Couldn't care less. My phone has a higher resolution screen than the Switch and very likely the Switch 2 as well (even if the rumor of it having a 1080p screen pans out), so that's where I use my streaming apps.
It's Black Friday week where sales will be quite heavily biased toward discounted titles and games bundled with hardware, so no shock to see Mario RPG take a tumble down the charts.
This...doesn't really look all that interesting IMO. The last two South Park RPGs from Ubisoft actually felt like South Park, with the same humor and artstyle.
Curious if Matt and Trey were involved in developing this one like the other two or if they just lent their voices and advice.
If you disregard the presentation (or lack thereof) of the most recent game and focus on sales and revenue (of the games and merchandise as a whole), then yes, Pokémon is well on its way to being around for 100+ years.
Given the sales trends for past Mario title, it was clear for a while that Wonder would never have the same massive launch sales that we saw with Zelda or Pokemon. The Switch install base is huge but that doesn't mean every game is going to obliterate sales records. Games like the Mario platformers will have good (but far from record-smashing) launch sales followed by a huge holiday boost and strong legs the following year.
On the other hand, Spider-Man 2 is basically Sony's Tears of the Kingdom (i.e. a highly-anticipated direct sequel to a previous highly-acclaimed massively successful open-world action-adventure game) so enormous launch sales were to be expected despite being a PS5 exclusive.
It would be cool if Nintendo went with a cast of mostly unknown actors so that no one can be impacted by typecasting, but unfortunately I don't think that will happen and I fully expect the cast to be littered with big name celebrities.
Ironic given that Warner Bros' biggest video game launch ever by a wide margin is Hogwarts Legacy, which is a single-player open-world RPG with no live-service elements whatsoever. Prior to Hogwarts, their biggest game launch was the Batman Arkham games, which were single-player open-world games with no live service elements.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros' biggest live service game, Multiversus, was massively popular for about 15 minutes and then proceded to collapse so hard that it was discontinued (for the time being). Also, Mortal Kombat 1 is currently underperforming and Suicide Squad looks to be a historic failure comparable to the recent failures of the DC cinematic universe movies.
Not a fan of combining all those Zelda versions in that table.
Like, Ocarina of Time N64 and Ocarina of Time 3D were released 13 years apart on two completely different platforms, with the latter being a full remake of the prior. The amount of double-dipping is probably enormous.
The massive depreciation of the yen over the last 2 years is the reason why these results are record breaking. Convert everything to dollars/euro and the results are still good but not record-breaking anymore.
@Kekshook I think you are overdramatizing things. Yes, Nintendo is doing all these bundles to clear stock for the upcoming Switch successor next year, but that doesn't means the Switch will be discontinued anytime soon.
He's not saying it will be very difficult to match Ultimate's scope, he's saying it will be very difficult to greatly exceed Ultimate's scope in the same way that Ultimate greatly exceeded Smash Wii U/3DS's scope.
@Andy_Witmyer Even if this was some kind of second screen accessory rather than a standalone product, the same patent principle would apply: the public release of the patent means it won't be used in an actual upcoming product as patents related to upcoming products are private until after the product's official reveal.
Nobody was able to dig up any patent information about the Switch or its various accessories back in 2015/2016, and nobody will be able to dig up patent info about the Switch 2 or its accessories right now.
The public release of this patent means it won't be the actual design of the Switch 2 since Nintendo will have the patent of the Switch 2's actual design kept private until the Switch 2 itself is unveiled.
Remember when people thought the Switch/NX would look like this?
@Logicfire
No there are a bunch of games (not even just Switch games) where the patch is way, way bigger than the actual data on the cartridge/disc.
My favorite example is last year's Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 where only ~70MB of data comes on the game disc and you have to download a 100GB+ "patch" that contains the actual game contents. I think all future Call of Duty games will follow this model, including the COD games that eventually release on Switch 2.
There have been reports of 3rd party games that have skipped the Switch because of its lackluster internal storage space, so that is definitely something that Nintendo needs to improve for their next gen hardware. More storage also increases the overall digital software spending for all games in general.
@Frogspree
It's really not that weird at all. Beyond the fact that Nintendo is comparatively weaker in the UK than elsewhere, you have to remember that Spider-Man 2 is the direct sequel to Spider-Man 2018, which is the best-selling 1st party PlayStation game of all time. Hype for Spider-Man 2 was strong ever since it was announced 2 years ago, which has now been reflected in in its huge launch.
On the other hand, Super Mario Bros Wonder is the spiritual successor to the New Super Mario Bros series, whose last entry was 10+ years ago and wasn't exactly the most well recieved game ever. The game was also only announced back in June so it only had ~4 months to accumulate interest and preorders rather than 2+ years.
@KBuckley27 We all know if the game was Super Bubsy Bros Wonder, it would have a 99 on Metacritic, but Nintendo had to lower the score for humanity's sake.
Honestly, this was better performance for Detective Pikachu than I was expecting, given the mediocre reviews and the fact that the movie was released 4.5 years ago. The game is basically selling off of the strength of fhe Pikachu name alone.
@JohnnyMind 3DS/Wii U being backwards compatible with NDS/Wii didn't prevent Nintendo from shutting down NDS/Wii online play in 2014.
With that being said, regardless of whether Switch 2 is backwards-compatible or not, I expect Nintendo to keep Switch online play alive for way way longer since online gaming on Switch is far bigger now than it was on previous Nintendo platforms.
This was inevitable once hackers started using exploits to hack into other people's systems via online play (even if Nintendo was able to fix that issue for Mario Kart/Splatoon).
If this next Nintendo console is actually a Switch 2 as has been rumored (and not a brand new concept with a big change in hardware architecture and/or media format), then I think not having backwards compatibility would be a big strategic error.
The author does a pretty terrible job at defending his position here. The only line of reasoning with some merit is the idea that Nintendo wants to stop hackers/pirates, but then again, if we look into the past, rampant NDS piracy didn't stop the 3DS from being backwards compatible with it.
Amazing that Nintendo was able to go by without mass layoffs during the Wii U doldrums, while Epic is "forced" to layoff 1/6th of their entire workforce while they have...check notes...one of the most successful games ever made in Fortnite.
Pretty much the same as how NBA2K has run on Switch, except NBA has had content parity on Switch since the very beginning while FIFA only got content parity/non-Legacy on Switch when it lost the FIFA license.
@Giancarlothomaz
MK1 is a glitchy mess while MK11 wasn't. MK1 actually runs at a higher resolution and comparable gameplay performance to MK11, but it's hard to notice when the textures/animations aren't loading in properly and the framerate is crashing during cutscenes.
No doubt this is due to Tencent/Netware offering him a huge check to setup his own studio. Don't really see any other reason why he would leave Platinum and his IPs.
I know people like to clown on the Switch being weak and outdated, but it is quite literally several orders of magnitude more powerful than a PS2. No PS2 remasters on Switch should be performing worse than their PS2 originals.
