Re: Random: Sakurai Wanted The GameCube Controller To Include A Scroll Wheel

westman98

Nintendo once famously patented an implementation of scroll wheel shoulder buttons.

Hard to say how far this idea went but that device in the image looks suspiciously like a Switch (or more specifically, a Switch Lite) so Nintendo was probably toying with the idea of putting scroll wheel shoulder buttons in the Switch JoyCons itself at one point.

Re: Super Mario Bros. Wonder Also Had A Strong Start In The US

westman98

Given the sales trends for past Mario title, it was clear for a while that Wonder would never have the same massive launch sales that we saw with Zelda or Pokemon. The Switch install base is huge but that doesn't mean every game is going to obliterate sales records. Games like the Mario platformers will have good (but far from record-smashing) launch sales followed by a huge holiday boost and strong legs the following year.

On the other hand, Spider-Man 2 is basically Sony's Tears of the Kingdom (i.e. a highly-anticipated direct sequel to a previous highly-acclaimed massively successful open-world action-adventure game) so enormous launch sales were to be expected despite being a PS5 exclusive.

Re: Warner Bros. Says It's Focused On Transforming Its "Biggest Franchises" Into Live Services

westman98

Ironic given that Warner Bros' biggest video game launch ever by a wide margin is Hogwarts Legacy, which is a single-player open-world RPG with no live-service elements whatsoever. Prior to Hogwarts, their biggest game launch was the Batman Arkham games, which were single-player open-world games with no live service elements.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros' biggest live service game, Multiversus, was massively popular for about 15 minutes and then proceded to collapse so hard that it was discontinued (for the time being). Also, Mortal Kombat 1 is currently underperforming and Suicide Squad looks to be a historic failure comparable to the recent failures of the DC cinematic universe movies.

Re: Newly Discovered Nintendo Filing Shows Off "Dual-Screen, Detachable Device"

@Andy_Witmyer
Even if this was some kind of second screen accessory rather than a standalone product, the same patent principle would apply: the public release of the patent means it won't be used in an actual upcoming product as patents related to upcoming products are private until after the product's official reveal.

Nobody was able to dig up any patent information about the Switch or its various accessories back in 2015/2016, and nobody will be able to dig up patent info about the Switch 2 or its accessories right now.

Re: Hogwarts Legacy Physical & Digital Switch Release Will Require 8GB "Day 1" Update

@Logicfire
No there are a bunch of games (not even just Switch games) where the patch is way, way bigger than the actual data on the cartridge/disc.

My favorite example is last year's Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 where only ~70MB of data comes on the game disc and you have to download a 100GB+ "patch" that contains the actual game contents. I think all future Call of Duty games will follow this model, including the COD games that eventually release on Switch 2.

Re: UK Charts: Mario Wonder And Sonic Superstars Start Strong, But Neither Can Out-Swing Spidey

westman98

@Frogspree
It's really not that weird at all. Beyond the fact that Nintendo is comparatively weaker in the UK than elsewhere, you have to remember that Spider-Man 2 is the direct sequel to Spider-Man 2018, which is the best-selling 1st party PlayStation game of all time. Hype for Spider-Man 2 was strong ever since it was announced 2 years ago, which has now been reflected in in its huge launch.

On the other hand, Super Mario Bros Wonder is the spiritual successor to the New Super Mario Bros series, whose last entry was 10+ years ago and wasn't exactly the most well recieved game ever. The game was also only announced back in June so it only had ~4 months to accumulate interest and preorders rather than 2+ years.

Re: 3DS And Wii U Online Play Ends In "Early April" 2024

westman98

@JohnnyMind
3DS/Wii U being backwards compatible with NDS/Wii didn't prevent Nintendo from shutting down NDS/Wii online play in 2014.

With that being said, regardless of whether Switch 2 is backwards-compatible or not, I expect Nintendo to keep Switch online play alive for way way longer since online gaming on Switch is far bigger now than it was on previous Nintendo platforms.

Re: Soapbox: 'Switch 2' Doesn't Really Need Backwards Compatibility

westman98

If this next Nintendo console is actually a Switch 2 as has been rumored (and not a brand new concept with a big change in hardware architecture and/or media format), then I think not having backwards compatibility would be a big strategic error.

The author does a pretty terrible job at defending his position here. The only line of reasoning with some merit is the idea that Nintendo wants to stop hackers/pirates, but then again, if we look into the past, rampant NDS piracy didn't stop the 3DS from being backwards compatible with it.
