Speaking of backtracking, this is arguably the biggest weakness of the original GameCube game. That’s still the case in story chapters (looking at Chapter 2 in particular), but you’ll gain access to a Warp Pipe room which allows you to fast-travel back to the other towns. Yes, this existed in the GameCube version, but it’s been tweaked heavily for the Switch release – no longer do you need to break huge blocks to access pipes, nor do you need to remember which pipe goes where. Each blue pipe is labelled with a number corresponding to the chapter you visited that town in, meaning you can easily get back to Petalburg or the Great Tree by simply following the numbers. It might take a minute to unlock, but it makes those Trouble Center requests much easier to complete. And you can access it straight from Rogueport rather than going through the Sewers each time.
Since Corsi was (at least partially) responsible for convincing Sega/RGG to localize Yakuza for the west, one has to wonder if he will convince them to port those games to Switch/Switch 2 lol
Seems like he is saying that the $70 price for big AAA games is too cheap, and as a result the price of AAA games will either go up (to $80 or more?) or developers/publishers will start developing cheaper AA/A games that are priced below $70 to begin with.
TBH I'm not sure I believe him. The market has now largely accepted $70 AAA games - Nintendo is basically the only major publisher who hasn't totally transitioned to the $70 price tag and that is only because they have not released the Switch 2 yet.
Doubling the amount of RAM will not "double the power" of the console itself without similarly upgrading the GPU/CPU. Of course performance will take a massive hit in this case.
I'd love to be wrong but I think it's more likely Xbox leaves the hardware business entirely than make a handheld/hybrid. If they are struggling to compete against PlayStation in dedicated home consoles where they have been a major player for the last 20+ years, I don't think they'll find much if any success in handhelds where they have 0 experience.
@Edu23XWiiU
As far as I can tell Derek Connelly has largely been a co-writer for various big movies (most frequently working alongside Colin Trevorrow) and has never written a movie as the sole writer up until now with Zelda.
@SpaceboyScreams No, the writers are not the one who wrote Morbius.
One of the producers of the Zelda movie is Avi Arad who also produced Morbius, but he produces every Spider-Man or Spider-Man-related movie at Sony so that tells us absolutely nothing about the potential quality of the film.
GameFreak only ever did 3rd versions because DLC sales on Nintendo platforms prior to Switch were quite small (or didnt even exist prior to 3DS). Now that Nintendo platforms have a strong digital ecosystem, doing normal DLC most other games is more than enough.
@Anachronism Mass video game industry layoffs began happening in 2023 (particularly with Embracer Group), but it has massively accelerated during 2024.
The primary cause is rising costs and stabalization from Covid-fueled growth that is now gone.
@SalvorHardin I would go so far as to say it would be borderline business malfeasance for Nintendo to revert Zelda back to the old formula that nearly brought the franchise to its knees.
A sequel would be great but it would need to be done right. It definitely should not be like NSMB2, which was a bit too similar to NSMB on DS and only distinguished itself by focusing on a single largely-uninteresting gimmick of "What if there were coins everywhere?".
On another note, it would be cool to see some elements of Wonder (the Wonder Flower effects, badges, the Souls-like multiplayer, etc) adopted into the next 3D Mario game. Those things should also be in the next Mario Maker 3 as well (as I'm certain the next Mario Maker will arrive before the next mainline 2D Mario title).
No new Pokemon game for 2024 is quite shocking and would mark the first time in this franchise's history where there isn't a Pokemon RPG for 2 consecutive years.
At least Pokemon Z is finally real now, just not in the way anyone thought.
@AccessibleDaydream Correct, the vast majority of people care about Nintendo because of their games and hardware, not because of their quirks (whatever that even means).
Pretty mid Direct for me though the fact that Nintendo is reviving Endless Ocean is quite surprising. The lineup is fine but it's clear that most heavy hitters - both 3rd and 1st party - are being saved for Switch 2.
@PikaPhantom Exactly what I thought, though it is a bit weird that YouTube would default to automatically choosing Gold/Silver instead of the countless other Pokemon titles in existence.
I struggle to think of a way to make a AAA Crazy Taxi game outside of turning it into GTA, which (if that happens) then begs the question: Why not just buy GTA (especially with VI coming out next year)?
@JokerCK Yeah I don't know why they didn't just specify those 4 games during the podcast. The cat is already out of the bag, may as well name some names and get it over with.
@Great_Gonzalez No, that 583 million figure is the known combined sales of all Nintendo 1st party games on Switch, not just the games on the Top 10 list.
@jedgamesguy Not too shocking to see the sequel of a highly acclaimed predecessor have a far bigger launch but then taper off quicker as the hype was centered around the launch window rather than spread throughout a long period like with BOTW (a Switch launch title).
Note that these are also shipment figures so the low sales of TOTK during the holidays is more to do with Nintendo letting existing supply sell-through before shipping additional copies than the game "tanking."
We went from Batman Arkham Knight being the fastest-selling superhero game ever upon its release to Suicide Squad selling half of the Guardians of the Galaxy game that infamously underperformed. Total collapse here.
Predicting that the Switch 2 won't sell as much as Switch 1 is hardly a shocking guess given that Switch 1 is closing in on 140 million units sold, but maybe wait for the thing to be announced first??
The really bad thingg about all of this is that Microsoft isn't just laying off inexperienced college graduates or secretaries or HR, they are firing high level employees, many of whom have been at their respective studios for many many years. Even the Call of Duty studios are seeing big layoffs which is the last thing that should be happening to studios working on a massive GaaS annualized game franchise.
Not surprised at the return to LCD given that most of the handheld gaming PCs and the PlayStation Portal are sticking with LCD. The recently released SteamDeck OLED is an exception, but it also retails at $550 minimum and is far from the most affordable version of the SteamDeck.
Nintendo's customer base is far larger and more price conscious than those who buy handheld gaming PCs, so something had to give to keep the overall price down.
@HeadPirate Come on now, nobody is talking about Pals or Pokemon who look like simple easily-defined geometric shapes like spheres or cubes. All of the Pals that have been pointed out as possible evidence of plagiarism are complex 3D models with hundreds or thousands of vertices/tris/edges/etc.
@HeadPirate Again, I'm not talking about Palworld designs sharing the same base creature concept as Pokemon designs (that is totally fine), I'm referring to parts of models or parts of models that share near-identical shape and topology (i.e. number of vertices, edges, tris, etc) with existing Pokemon.
@HeadPirate People have dug into the in-game files and compared models from Palworld and Pokemon. Some of the comparisons absolutely indicate copying here, not just inspiration or parody (like you would see in other monster catching RPGs).
@HeadPirate There is no way Studio Wildcard isn't aware but as long as their intellectual property or copyright isn't being violated then they can't do anything. Unlike with Pokemon, it doesn't seem like any Ark assets or models were plagiarized.
@DennisReynolds
To be completely fair to PocketPair, there is currently no proof that Palworld is using AI to generate their Pals. Their CEO seems to love AI based on some old comments he made, but there is no evidence that it is currently being used in the game. No need to muddy the already very muddled waters.
They are seemingly leaning into good old-fashioned plagiarism, not AI-generated plagiarism.
I'd say that's a good performance for Another Code. This is a very, very, very niche IP; other smaller Nintendo franchises like Xenoblade or Metroid would look like blockbuster successes relative to Another Code.

It's because TTYD remake runs on the same game engine as The Origami King and Color Splash, both of which were 30FPS.
