Re: Hands On: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Unfolds Gloriously On Switch

westman98

Speaking of backtracking, this is arguably the biggest weakness of the original GameCube game. That’s still the case in story chapters (looking at Chapter 2 in particular), but you’ll gain access to a Warp Pipe room which allows you to fast-travel back to the other towns. Yes, this existed in the GameCube version, but it’s been tweaked heavily for the Switch release – no longer do you need to break huge blocks to access pipes, nor do you need to remember which pipe goes where. Each blue pipe is labelled with a number corresponding to the chapter you visited that town in, meaning you can easily get back to Petalburg or the Great Tree by simply following the numbers. It might take a minute to unlock, but it makes those Trouble Center requests much easier to complete. And you can access it straight from Rogueport rather than going through the Sewers each time.

Thanks goodness

Re: Saber Interactive CEO Doesn't Think $70 Video Games Are Sustainable

westman98

Seems like he is saying that the $70 price for big AAA games is too cheap, and as a result the price of AAA games will either go up (to $80 or more?) or developers/publishers will start developing cheaper AA/A games that are priced below $70 to begin with.

TBH I'm not sure I believe him. The market has now largely accepted $70 AAA games - Nintendo is basically the only major publisher who hasn't totally transitioned to the $70 price tag and that is only because they have not released the Switch 2 yet.

Re: Rumour: Xbox May Be About To Join The Switch In The Handheld Space

westman98

I'd love to be wrong but I think it's more likely Xbox leaves the hardware business entirely than make a handheld/hybrid. If they are struggling to compete against PlayStation in dedicated home consoles where they have been a major player for the last 20+ years, I don't think they'll find much if any success in handhelds where they have 0 experience.

Re: Poll: Do You Want To See 'Super Mario Bros. Wonder 2'?

westman98

A sequel would be great but it would need to be done right. It definitely should not be like NSMB2, which was a bit too similar to NSMB on DS and only distinguished itself by focusing on a single largely-uninteresting gimmick of "What if there were coins everywhere?".

On another note, it would be cool to see some elements of Wonder (the Wonder Flower effects, badges, the Souls-like multiplayer, etc) adopted into the next 3D Mario game. Those things should also be in the next Mario Maker 3 as well (as I'm certain the next Mario Maker will arrive before the next mainline 2D Mario title).

Re: Here Are The Top Ten Best-Selling Nintendo Switch Games As Of December 2023

westman98

@jedgamesguy
Not too shocking to see the sequel of a highly acclaimed predecessor have a far bigger launch but then taper off quicker as the hype was centered around the launch window rather than spread throughout a long period like with BOTW (a Switch launch title).

Note that these are also shipment figures so the low sales of TOTK during the holidays is more to do with Nintendo letting existing supply sell-through before shipping additional copies than the game "tanking."

Re: Microsoft Lays Off 1,900 Xbox, Bethesda And Activision Blizzard Employees

westman98

The really bad thingg about all of this is that Microsoft isn't just laying off inexperienced college graduates or secretaries or HR, they are firing high level employees, many of whom have been at their respective studios for many many years. Even the Call of Duty studios are seeing big layoffs which is the last thing that should be happening to studios working on a massive GaaS annualized game franchise.

Re: 'Switch 2' Launching This Year With 8-Inch LCD Screen, According To New Analyst Rumour

westman98

Not surprised at the return to LCD given that most of the handheld gaming PCs and the PlayStation Portal are sticking with LCD. The recently released SteamDeck OLED is an exception, but it also retails at $550 minimum and is far from the most affordable version of the SteamDeck.

Nintendo's customer base is far larger and more price conscious than those who buy handheld gaming PCs, so something had to give to keep the overall price down.

Re: Yes, Nintendo Is Aware Of Palworld's Existence

@HeadPirate
Come on now, nobody is talking about Pals or Pokemon who look like simple easily-defined geometric shapes like spheres or cubes. All of the Pals that have been pointed out as possible evidence of plagiarism are complex 3D models with hundreds or thousands of vertices/tris/edges/etc.

Re: Yes, Nintendo Is Aware Of Palworld's Existence

westman98

@HeadPirate
Again, I'm not talking about Palworld designs sharing the same base creature concept as Pokemon designs (that is totally fine), I'm referring to parts of models or parts of models that share near-identical shape and topology (i.e. number of vertices, edges, tris, etc) with existing Pokemon.

Re: Yes, Nintendo Is Aware Of Palworld's Existence

westman98

@HeadPirate
People have dug into the in-game files and compared models from Palworld and Pokemon. Some of the comparisons absolutely indicate copying here, not just inspiration or parody (like you would see in other monster catching RPGs).

Re: Yes, Nintendo Is Aware Of Palworld's Existence

westman98

@HeadPirate
There is no way Studio Wildcard isn't aware but as long as their intellectual property or copyright isn't being violated then they can't do anything. Unlike with Pokemon, it doesn't seem like any Ark assets or models were plagiarized.

Re: Yes, Nintendo Is Aware Of Palworld's Existence

westman98

@DennisReynolds
To be completely fair to PocketPair, there is currently no proof that Palworld is using AI to generate their Pals. Their CEO seems to love AI based on some old comments he made, but there is no evidence that it is currently being used in the game. No need to muddy the already very muddled waters.

They are seemingly leaning into good old-fashioned plagiarism, not AI-generated plagiarism.
