It's Wednesday, which means we cast our eyes over to the Japanese market to see the movers and shakers, and those titles that simply refuse to go away. It's another decent week from Nintendo's perspective, overall, despite a lack of major releases.
Starting with software, Level-5 continues to have cash fights and all-day parties with spin-off Yo-Kai Watch Busters - in two iterations - remaining at number one and passing one million sales on the 3DS. Splatoon is still doing pretty well, too, and a number of evergreen Nintendo releases are shifting reasonable numbers of units long after release. The top 20 is below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [3DS] Yo-Kai Watch Busters: Red Cat Team / White Dog Squad (Nintendo, 07/11/15) – 95,369 (1,009,905)
- [PS3] Sengoku Basara 4: Sumeragi (Capcom, 07/23/15) – 58,889 (New)
- [PS4] Sengoku Basara 4: Sumeragi (Capcom, 07/23/15) – 35,161 (New)
- [Wii U] Splatoon (Nintendo, 05/28/15) – 24,289 (455,158)
- [PSV] Makai Shin Trillion (Compile Heart, 07/23/15) – 18,506 (New)
- [3DS] Rhythm Heaven: The Best+ (Nintendo, 06/11/15) – 16,110 (359,603)
- [PS3] TV Anime The Idolmaster: Cinderella Girls G4U! Pack Vol. 3 (Bandai Namco, 07/23/15) – 15,060 (New)
- [3DS] Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright / Conquest (Nintendo, 06/25/15) – 14,023 (377,775)
- [PS4] Batman: Arkham Knight (Warner Bros., 07/16/15) – 12,273 (61,076)
- [Wii U] Yoshi's Woolly World (Nintendo, 07/16/15) – 11,733 (42,891)
- [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (SCE, 03/19/15) – 10,180 (263,487)
- [3DS] The Great Ace Attorney (Capcom, 07/09/15) – 9,554 (169,161)
- [3DS] Langrisser Re:Incarnation Tensei (Masaya Games, 07/23/15) – 9,300 (New)
- [PSV] Taiko Drum Master: V Version (Bandai Namco, 07/09/15) – 8,277 (66,959)
- [Wii U] Mario Kart 8 (Nintendo, 05/29/14) – 7,076 (1,074,513)
- [3DS] Chou Tousouchuu Atsumare! Saikyou no Tousou Monotachi (Bandai Namco, 07/09/15) – 6,757 (25,277)
- [3DS] Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire (Pokemon, 11/21/14) – 5,414 (2,668,433)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Nintendo, 11/08/12) – 5,343 (4,007,043)
- [PSV] Vamwolf Cross (D3 Publisher, 07/23/15) – 3,369 (New)
- [3DS] Girls Mode 3: Kira Kira Code (Nintendo, 04/16/15) – 2,966 (170,116)
After being dumped off top-spot by a boosted PS4 last week, the New Nintendo 3DS LL (XL) resumed normal service as number one in hardware. Pleasingly the Wii U halted a steady recent drop in sales to hold in five figures, showing that the system is at least achieving a sense of stability in the Japanese market. The latest results are below, with last week's sales in brackets.
- New 3DS LL – 21,028 (19,432)
- PlayStation 4 – 17,656 (24,266)
- PlayStation Vita – 13,843 (13,190)
- Wii U – 11,257 (11,028)
- New 3DS – 5,753 (5,437)
- PlayStation 3 – 2,956 (2,947)
- 3DS – 1,286 (1,376)
- 3DS LL – 807 (726)
- PlayStation Vita TV – 642 (618)
- Xbox One – 211 (242)
It's all golden toilets and victory lattes at Level-5, meanwhile, though the 3DS is happily benefiting from its success.

Although Smash is my favorite Wii U game, I'm going to say Splatoon is its killer app. Those of you who don't have it, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy.
Wow, the Wii U refuses to drop to 4-figures. That's impressive, to be honest.
I think it's fascinating the way different cultures embrace different ideas
And with that, Wii U is up year over year in Japan. Splatoon has moved more hardware than Mario Kart 8. PS4 is now up YoY too. Small victories, take 'em where you can. PS3 and Vita of course way down YoY though.
Interesting about Splatoon - when you align it with Mario Kart 8 sales, Splatoon is outpacing it, and the gap is widening.
Nice to see Splatoon up there, and regular 3DS dominance. All good in Nintendo Land.
It's official, Splatoon has done a nice job to nab hardware sales, but the question is what else are those owners buying?
They clearly aren't buying Mario Kart at a fervent pace, and neither are they buying Smash for U, so what's going on?
2 full months of increased hardware sales for Wii U off the back of Splatoon. I wonder what could have been if Splatoon and Mario Maker were launch titles for Wii U. I have a feeling Mario Maker will sell more hardware then is expected.
@TheWPCTraveler - I would say they are buying MK8. I'd be willing to bet a good portion of the 7K sales for MK8 is for hardware bundles that in turn becomes a software sale for Splatoon. What else they are getting though?
Thomas please consider adding the total lifetime hardware sales (in brackets!) next time.
@Gerbwmu Hmm, I'd think that Smash for Wii U is doing ~2k a week.
I believe that if you have that, you have reasonable figures for 3D World, NSMBU, Nintendo Land, Wii Party U, and other long-lasting titles.
Oh, and my mistake, I didn't see Yoshi up there, forgive me.
@Dr_Corndog When it drops to a reasonable price, I'll buy splatoon. Until then, I won't be buying.
@ikki5 I'm sure you frequent this site enough to know Nintendo rarely drops prices on sucessful software. Mario Galaxy 2 just got a price cut last year.
Splatoon and Fire Emblem have some LOOOOOOONG legs
Wii U also has other non mainstream titles available in Japan....
Wait...
Is that the Stay Puft Marshmallow man in the picture!?
Who 're gonna call...
...Yokai watch... That isn't nearly as catchy... But I hope Yokai Busters has PK Meters and proton packs...
...Remember kids, don't cross the streams!
Wait... I just noticed the freaking Ecto-1 in the picture!
Dude... I want this now! Screw the first game, this is like a YoKai Watch/Ghost Busters cross over!
@ikki5 Splatoon is more than worth its price.
Why can't FE sell HUGE?!?
Good to see Splatoon doing well, where are all the naysayers now?
And Microsoft can't catch a break with their Xbox One in Japan- even the Vita TV sold well over three times as many units, and the OLD 3DS LL at nearly four times.
(Probably mentioned by someone last week, but I didn't read the comments so wouldn't know)
@ikki5 I think splatoon is undoubtedly 'worth the price.' Perhaps a case could've been made to say it wasn't when first released but that's changed pretty drastically, and more free content is on the way. Obviously value for money is pretty subjective, but what exactly makes you say it's not worth the price.
Another million seller for 3DS in Japan alone! Congrats to Yokai Watch Buster. Monster Hunter X will be the next, and then Yokai Watch 3, then maybe a new Pokemon before 3DS ended its lifespan. Worldwide, Fire Emblem Fates should be a million seller, Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer seems to be another potential too. Then there is Bravely Second that could go close to a million. Then there's two Dragon Quest title incoming. Good times for 3DS.
Also glad to see Splatoon is still strong. Hope Wii U could keep the five figures, maybe next week Splatoon update could keep it in that number. Not sure how incoming Devil Third will affect Wii U though, hopefully a small boost too.
Release yokai watch for wiii u on Japan.
I wonder how sales would get boosted :>
Jeez... Xbox One really sells terribly in Japan. I get that it's American, but they just totally snub it over there.
Yo-Kai Watch is selling really well - I wonder if it will come close to beating Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
I hope The Great Ace Attorney continues to sell well. Glad to see Wii U still going ok.
Am I reading this right? Did the XBONE sell 211 systems? LOOOL
@ikki5 I think Splatoon will be entirely complete and definitely worth the price after the August update. They did say they were continuing to support the game afterwards, so if you decide to buy the game, you'll at least know it will be receiving future content.
Other than that, Nintendo takes ages to drop the prices for their games, so you'll probably be waiting a good while for a price drop.
Back in 2001 the late Yamauchi-san is quoted as saying that microsoft for all their billions of dollars do not understand japanese tastes in video games and as such will never conquer the Japanese market. Those words still ring true to this day. In the previous console generation they even went to the extent of getting Hironobu Sakaguchi to make a JRPG exclusively for xbox 360 and still their xbox brand is still as good as mush in the minds of Japanese consumers.
