Xenoblade Chronicles X is downloading onto some Japanese Wii U systems right now, and new details on paid-DLC options have accompanied the launch. On a whole the content on offer seems to be a decent value, though day one extras aren't always greeted with open arms.

The four characters above each come with their own quests - three each - that, when completed, unlock that character and some related arts and unique Skells / Dolls. They cost 500 Yen each, which is a little over $4.
There are also three smaller support quest packs that allow you to gather more materials and resources than normal - the concept reminds us a little of some of the DLC options in Fire Emblem: Awakening. Each of these support quests has six variations and they cost 300 Yen each, which is about $2.50.
It is possible to buy all of the DLC together and save about 45% of the combined cost, with all included for 2000 Yen - that's just under $17.
DLC quests have been - quite literally - on the cards for a while now. If this content and pricing comes across to the West in this form, would you be tempted? Let us know what you think in the comments, while below is a new video showing an online quest in action.

Might grab the DLC characters if they ever go on sale, but overall, it doesn't sound that interesting.
Bring it on! I gotsta have me ALL that DLC!
I don't feel like there is a need for me to purchase DLC for a RPG game. The original package, and story should be enough. The only reason I'd get the DLC is after I beat the game, but with so many games out there I usually move on to something else as soon as I beat one.
...meh. Not too bothered by it, although I imagine most people would be.
I wonder if the DLC will also arrive in other regions.
Yes and yes please
I'm not a fan of day 1 DLC but the price doesn't seem that bad.
Wow a $60 game turns to $77 now. I'll just pretend they don't exist until after I play and finish the game.
Here comes the Nintendo "hate squad".
I guess there's no escaping the reality and even on Nintendo platforms we'll now have stuff like that. I rarely buy DLC for any game, and this is a prime example of additional content I'd never get UNLESS I was a huge, huge fan of a game. In fact I did only ONCE... For Mass Effect 2... Anyway, those things don't look like they are in any way needed to enjoy Xenoblade Chronicles X, so skipping them would be the logical thing to do.
the DLC seams Fine to me il be getting it when we eventually get this Game.
@JaxonH - But when are going to play? Or have you built a Wii U into your dashboard and a Gamepad into your steering wheel for lunch breaks?
So far all of this DLC is extra, yes? As in uneccassary for the main storyline. They can add all the extra characters and quests they want as long as I dont reslly need them.
One of my greatest fears for this game is currently its storyline, which I feel like Ive already played in both the Xenosaga trilogy and Star Ocean The Last Hope. About 20 hours into XC now, and Ill probably finish near when this comrs out, and the storyline is great, I destroy every Mechon I see in vengeance, and XCX almost looks like a purely exploration game in comparison, w/ some Halo type enemy thrown in for good measure. Though FF8 managed to keep me interested after FF7, so there is still hope.
Actually my greater fear is what will Zelda feel like after both XC and XCX? Having a huge world alone won't cut it. I spent 2 hours just exploring the Bionis leg last night, layers and caves and twists and turns, that 1 leg alone is huge w/ plenty to find and do - most of which I couldnt do yet. Plus all those hours playing Hyrule Warriors. The Zelda team really hss its work cut out for it.
I think I will need to know more about the game before I can judge the DLC.
It worries me slightly. Is this not what Sakurai is unhappy with?
Boring.
Seriously?
Look, another DLC fest.
Nintendo (along with Monolith) is f* up every franchise now. Bravo.
I was going to just buy this now I need to look at exactly what having the easy xp / loot grind missions does.
Maybe I will wait until the DLC goes on sale.
(Although I have no choice over what other people do - I do have the choice to make sure they get less (Or nothing as was my choice with Mario Golf) than they would otherwise due to something I disagree with).
Are you kidding me? You're going to ask me if I'd be willing to buy DLC for a game I haven't even played yet? I have no idea!!!!
If I love the game and want more then yes I'll absolutely buy it.
If I love the game and want to show Nintendo that I love it then I might buy it.
If I don't like the game or get bored quickly then I don't care how much there is or how cheap it is I'm not buying it.
On another note, if they released DLC to the Xenoblade Chronicles 3D (I only say 3D because I know the Wii can't do DLC, but 3DS can) I'd buy that in a heartbeat.
I really don't want this. Why couldn't this have been in the game since the beginning?
I never got the paid DLC for FE: Awakening because the game itself has plenty of content. I expect it will be the same for this one.
There are so many misunderstandings about day 1 DLC. This stuff was likely developed after the company submitted the game to ESRB and began printing copies. There's a couple months there where anything they make can't be included, the game is already finished. Adding this stuff in the game would've delayed release. That's usually why day 1 DLC exists. Obviously some companies abuse it and purposely withhold content... I don't think this is a case of that.
What I don't understand is where did they find the time to make additional content while working on a game that is already so huge. The devs must never sleep.
oooh more ways to extend this already epic looking experience? Sign me up!
Why has this article got the tag: "Dinosaurs"?!?
Let me play the game first then I'll decide if I want DLC. I suspect that after ~100 hours I would not be inclined to get it.
The game is going to be big enough as is, so I'll likely pass on this. I don't have the time for all these highly touted hundreds-of-hours games these days. Give me something succinct once in a while. I'll take the regular game in a nice collector's edition and that's good enough.
At this point, though, I may not even have time to finish this when it comes out.
I like character DLC, but that's what it has to be, fully integrated character DLC. Last thing I want is a NPC who is more like a doll than a character.
As long as it's PLENTY OF quests and skills, maybe this will be worth the 15 or so dollars bundle.
I really only want the glasses guy though! I'm gonna call him Shinpachi
So... I thought online co-op involved running around the open world together..?
Day 1 DLC is awful. However, as far as Day 1 DLC goes, this isn't that bad. I'm not thrilled about it, but I'm okay with this.
We will see, depends on how irritated I get with resource grinding...
On topic of DLC, as long as it's simple stuff with good incentive I don't mind it.. More Skells is cool in my book.
As long as the data is on the disk so i won't have to download any data then i might get the dlc but i'm more interested in the new kinds of skells mentioned.
As a general rule, I hate day 1 DLC, but this game seems so big without the DLC that I'm not really bothered.
At similar prices I might buy this DLC, but it really depends on how much I like the game, and how much content is in the game. I loved Fantasy Life, but I still didn't buy the DLC until I had finished most of the main content, which took about 100 hours. Xenoblade Chronicles X looks like it will have more content than Fantasy Life without the DLC, and the DLC looks comparatively light on new content, so I might be content with just what's on the disc.
Maybe. But I thibk I'll have enough to do in this game without any DLC.
And people said Nintendo does DLC right... lol
@ShadJV
The reason that it doesn't matter a lot is because they probably thought of the idea before they submitted it and then decided to just submit anyway and then keep working on it.
@ShadJV You're right. The game probably went Gold back in February or March for Japan, and while I'm iffy on the DLC characters, the rest is stuff interns could've gotten done around the end of development. They didn't take out those things, they just threw it in there, especially the Bonus materials and quests, for those who want an easier time. Sounds reasonable, especially for those who get the game late and want to catch up to their buddies ASAP for cooperative multiplayer.
I feel like the bonus characters should've been saved for a month after release, though. I dunno, they seem like the Kasumi DLC in Mass Effect 2, where you get an extra character who adds jack squat to the story outside their own extra quests, and simply gives you more options for the sake of it. Personally, I'd only care about that after I beat the game...
To me it seems that the game doesn't need DLC but the development was so huge that they would like to turn that into some extra cash flow.
Indifference is the word that comes to mind when I'm asked about DLC. Fine by me. If I really really like the game I might look into that later.
I rather dislike day 1 DLC. I'll only get this long after I've started playing the game if the extra content really excites me and it's a reasonable price here in Europe.
The one time i will say i dont care about the price, ill buy it all.
Whaaaaaaaattt, Nintendo announces DLC before the game releases???! I'm shocked
I'll wait until I finish the game before deciding on any DLC.
@XFsWorld Not Nintendo.
If it had of been the characters from XC and not farming material and item quests I would have been pissed off. This is just bonus stuff.
Not enough boobs for a sale to me.
And on a side note Batman: Arkham Knight's Season Pass is $39.99 with nebulous details as to what that gets you.
http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/04/28/batman-arkham-knight-season-pass-and-premium-edition-announced
Sure, from the way things are shaping up it looks like the sort of game I'd happily pay a little extra for in order to get some extra things.
... Maybe steal HB's glasses too. Gotta rock glasses on Mira.
I'll play through the game and decide if I need any more game until buying this.
Just to make sure- none of them are Reyn and Shulk, are they?
Damn it, I have a lot of games to play but now I want to play through XC again!
@MadAdam81 It's published by them, so yeah...Nintendo.
Huh, the vast majority of posters doing a complete 180 on how they feel about day one DLC now that it's something Nintendo does. Didn't see that coming...
What bugs me is the support packs. Gather resource/gain XP quicker is a mechanic ripped straight from Free-to-play games. We're being charged full price for the game already, there's no need for that.
Hah. I guess I should have seen this coming. But meh. I'll buy it, but I don't think I'll be too happy about it. Not that that matters.
Still seems kinda pricey, and just going by their designs I'm not really interested in any of the characters.
The game already seems HUGE so this DLC feels tacked on. No need for it.
@Tazcat2011 I'm looking forward to buying the GOTY version of that game at a cheaper price than the original retail price. Sure, that will be 2 years from now, but I'm plenty busy with what I have.
Not crazy about day-one DLC, but the fact that characters aren't unlocked until you complete the quests is interesting. Better than just buying the characters outright, at least it adds some game time for the price.
@XFsWorld depends on whose choice it was, Monolith or Nintendo.
@Peach64 Don't you remember? Nintendo can never be wrong.
@shigulicious Don't blame you. Even though that $200 collector edition though...... Kidding of course.
Well, that sounds pretty measly for about $17, I think I'll pass. Other than that: "Each of these support quests has six variations and they cost 300 Yen each, which is about $2.50."
You know ... cheats used to be free, and I'm still not sure I'm ok with monetizing them, I think that this is actually worse than probably overpriced (contrast to e.g. MK8) Day-One DLC (no matter if On-Disc or not, makes no difference anyways).
@Yorumi Oops, I assumed they were a Japanese third party dev. So, Nintendo.
Still, in the west not only will there be reviews of the Japanese version of the game but also the Japanese version of the DLC, so hopfully there won't be any bad surprises in either after purchase.
Nintendo maybe putting DLC (including Amiibos) in a lot of their recent games but at least they are things people would want and could afford. $17 is a reasonable price (it still could still change in the west)
The game already has tons of content so you don't NEED the DLC. If you want it, awesome! It's more of the game for you to enjoy. If not don't complain because some people want that DLC. I know I will play it after I beat the 300 hours of on disc content. Thank you Monolith. You are awesome. Remember don't complain!
@ShadJV Yea you are right. I don't think the disc is big enough for them to withhold content. From what I heard they had to compromise on textures and certain things to make sure the game fit on the disc because of Wii U's smaller storage capacity. Therefore I doubt they would waste disc space withholding content.
@Yorumi But this is a game that the developer has clearly said takes about 300 hours to complete the on on disc content. If this were a 4-10 hour story, I might be annoyed but there is more game here than I have time for AND they are providing DLC. That is ok in my book. This is not CoD.
Nope, just nope. Love Nintendo, love Monolith, love legitimate DLC (like Mario Kart 8). But I REFUSE to support this day-1 DLC BS. TBH, the game is probably worth the extra price but I just can't bring myself to support these kind of sleezy DLC tactics.
I dunno if I'd get this DLC at launch, but if they ever sell it at a lower price then count me in.
Super lame. Now this garbage is infecting and destroying even RPGs. There's no reason for this, it's just a greedy cashgrab. Thinking of skipping this "incomplete" game now, or waiting for it to go half off maybe to pay for the extra $17 DLC tax.
@Yorumi I will wait to reserve my judgement till I actually see the length of the DLC quests. It may actually be good content and a lot of it. We don't know yet. Believe me I hate F2P models but I am not sure Monolith would go there full force. We will see. Also, the pricing may be a lot different here. It's not going to be something people need so I guess if you don't like it don't get it... Which is what I was saying.
DLC is a value proposition and gamers need to evaluate for themselves if it's worth it. Companies that try to abuse it, i.e. selling the real end game etc will not see any of my money.
@Shyguyanonymous But the game has plenty of content without the DLC, the full game is already there (you aren't getting half or 2/3 a game it's 300 hours), and it is a great game without it. So just buy the game. I don't see why people get mad at developers who are making something OPTIONAL. You don't HAVE to complete that content. It is a game not a life mission. People get so OCD about games when they are supposed to be having fun playing them not finishing every single millimeter of content in an already content rich environment.
I am defending Monolith here because they are a solid developer and every game I have played of theirs has been long and full of content. Xenoblade will be as well without the DLC. IF people refuse to buy it because of OPTIONAL DLC then they will say oh we didn't get sales on an amazingly robust RPG so we just won't make any more RPGs on the system. Then who loses. I will buy the game no matter what. I may buy the DLC, I may not that depends on how good it is. I do not think Mario Kart's DLC that Nintendo released was a bad deal at all and Smash I just don't buy costumes.... I don't need them so why waste the money.
I love how people act like this is the first time Nintendo's done day one DLC. Mario Golf had it, as well. Before you say "BUT MARIO GOLF WAS CHEAPER THAN MOST 3DS GAMES AT LAUNCH!," this game has pretty fair DLC, because it's roughly 5x the size of the original. Can't really say you'd miss a few extra missions and some skells.
@Yorumi I'm not bent out of shape. Just don't buy the DLC, you are perfectly in your right to do that. But people are now saying they won't buy the game???? That makes no sense. The game is great without the DLC and does not need it. So just support the game. If no one buys the game because they have some DLC then we won't be seeing any more great RPGs on Wii U. I can guarantee. This looks like the best RPG since Xenoblade Wii and one of the best ever so it would be sad to see it suffer in sales.
What would send the message if the DLC is BS is buy the game but no one buys the DLC. That means we love the game but we don't want that BS. That is if the DLC actually sucks. We shall see.
300 hours game + more gameplay for 17$ !? Yes please!
@Quorthon Speaking of succinct, and I know you were also looking forward to it from previous posts of yours, did you get a chance to finish Affordable Space Adnventures yet? Sorry, I know it's an off topic question, but I simply must discuss my love for that game at any opportunity.

He says the game is incomplete... But it's 300 hours or more without the DLC. I hope this is not a widespread opinion.
But anyway, that is how the market works. People are supposed to vote with their wallet. If it does not sell, they will not continue to make that sort of DLC. If we support good DLC like Mario Kart hopefully people will support it.
@Yorumi I'm not bent out of shape I'm just saying
all guys loser....'im best....buy DLC
If I fall in love with this game, I'll buy the dlc. If not, I won't bother. Its as simple as that. I buy dlc for products I like, and want more of. But I refuse to buy dlc that seems like a quick cash grab. Like smash's terrible mii costumes.
@luke88 yeah it is a great game, it's my early pick for Indie GOTY.
Day one is pretty odd id like to see clarification on why it's not just in the regular game. Depending on the length of the quests though it could be decent value 12 quests for what'll be about £15.49 here.
@LUIGITORNADO that's a highly ironic statement. no going into further details because SPOILERS!!
Hrm. I'll see about the DLC, but I'm not sure if I'll want it as much as I did with the Mario Kart 8 DLC.
If this game is as big as MonolithSoft's been touting, then I won't want DLC at all and I'm sure to miss quests that'll already be in the game from the start (as I know I have with Skyrim and some side quests in Zelda games).
But we'll see.
I hate DLC but i will admit the pricing for this is great, better than what MKX is asking for. At least Nintendo got this right at least.
Ugh, day one DLC is never OK. If it's ready at launch it should be on the disc. Deliberately holding back content and selling it separately is shameful.
@thesilverbrick They can't fit anything else on the disc, they had to scale back textures to get the whole game on disc because of Wii U's limited storage size. They need a dual layer disc on Wii U but I don't think it has them.
@Galenmereth Do you honestly think Nintendo will do that? Hell no
You guys keep complaining but you do know that this is the same case with Fire Emblem and some Atlus games like SMT, right? But no one's complaining about those. If it's a very big scale game then everyone throws a fit. sigh
@TwilightAngel What? Why are you using MKX to compare? Lol. That's a fighting game.
To be expected. Huge game and they are giving plenty for the likely £35 purchase. Not a fan of dlc but if we want our industry to remain it is likely the way it has to be. So called 'AAA' has caused this, budgets have become ridiculous and we must remember sadly there is a small user base propping up Nintendo these day. If before we supported shorter, fun experiences, I feel it may have been different now, but we just need to look at how PS4/XBO games are all cinematic 30+ hour games. We used to play 4-5 games and be happy with our purchase that we'd replay; now we rarely replay and expect hundreds of hours of content. It truly had become the beast we deserve, welcome to capitalism.
I suppose I should be glad that those characters all look like utterly forgettable shrubberies, hardly more than a new skell skin-delivery-system (wow, that sounds so creepy). Makes it easier to pass them by.
@luke88 apologies for joining in, but ASA is a great game, completed it on co-op on technical, I was the gamepad player, the girlfriend took control of the ship... Almost a few arguments!
@Tazcat2011 It could well be my GOTY, indie or not. Will have to wait and play xenoblade and splatoon but it will be hard to beat, in my eyes.
@BrizzoUK Oh no not at all, no apology necessary! Ha! Yeah I can imagine, I've only played it solo but it was stressful at times, in a very positive and satisfying way though I thought. I imagine another player could make things even more stressful. Wish my girlfriend would play games with me, she hates them. 😄
That's just wrong.
I dont like DLC at all
but like ive always said, if the price is right and its actually done right, i dont mind paying for it
@Superstick I'm comparing the prices of the DLC not the genre of both games friendo. All DLC is the same no matter what,it's the prices that are different.
Hope this doesn't start a trend of Day 1 DLCs for Nintendo games.........
This situation reminds me of Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham story... the green eggs and ham is DLC (especially day 1 DLC), the NintendoLife community (and others) are the yellow guy with the tall black hat, Nintendo and other gaming publishers are Sam I Am, and the various subjects (such as the fox and the train) are the various game titles which have progressively included more and more DLC and day 1 DLC practices.
After every other publisher tried convincing us, it was Nintendo who finally proclaimed, "Try them, try them, and you may! Try them, and you may like them, I say!" The community (especially Nintendo communities) responded, "Say! I like DLC! I do! I like them, Nintendo! They are so good, so good, you see! And I would buy them here or there! Say! I will buy them anywhere! I do so like DLC! Thank you, thank you, Nintendo!"
Personally, I continue to not like the flavor of green eggs and ham. I prefer a green salad... which is often included in the cost of an entree, instead of separately, if you catch my drift. I don't want excessive cholesterol clogging up my systems.
@Zyph On the contrary... I complained about those. I refused to buy any of the DLC from FE: Awakening and SMT4, both of which had day 1 DLC. I didn't know SMT4 had day 1 DLC until I already bought it, soon after it's launch date. I even bought FE: Awakening Used for $25 from a local toy shop, instead of New from a chain store, since that one was the big offender on DLC. I may as well support a small business instead of Nintendo, if they're going to do that.
@MikeW Too late. Far too late...
Given the purported length of the main quest (+100hrs?) I don't think this content is totally out of the question. I'll probably drop down on the DLC but would want to finish the game first.
@TwilightAngel Why so hostile? It was just a simple question. Just curious is all.
im down with buying all the dlc, i did the same with ac 3 on wii u so whats another $20? unlike other games where you pay $60 for an unfinished game and pay $80 for a complete game, this is different and of course they cant fit all of them on the disk. i usually dont buy dlc if i think it was supposed to be in he game, this on the other-hand is different like i said earlier, its extra content and and may or may not be end game content. as i said earlier i will buy it.
@ShadJV and i agree, some are worse than others like DOA 5 LR.
@Superstick Yeah sorry about that i did get a little angry with my reply.
@TwilightAngel I know. I'm assuming because you're probably tired of arguing with people. Haha. Don't worry though. I'm not here to argue. I agree with most of your comments. Lol.
@Superstick I guess i am tired and sorry again lol
Please give us a release date (for Europe ). Man I want this game
I would buy the DLC on day one! Under 20€/Dollar isn't that bad.
Just bought Mortal Kombat X on PS4 with 30€ DLC and I got ripped off :-/
If I like the game and want more then sure I'll snap up that DLC like I did with the Mario Kart DLC
