Glad i was right about skipping cloud games on Switch. I just knew Nintendo and the partners would never allow any sort of upgrade path, let alone a free one. B*llshit move. Just like everyone saw coming a mile away the Pokemon GBA titles sold outside of NSO. Nintendo has always protected their interests, and everyone who's a fan knows this. Their titles have value, and they keep value. That's why excluding Fire Red and Leaf Green instantly devalues the NSO subscription, and there's no way around it.
@1UP-HUSKY because they've done market research and probably the people that currently pay the subscription wouldn't pay as much if you add up the single sold softwares. And that's the reason this will be sold and won't even be in the expansion pack: because they've done market research and they know they can make more money this way. Whoever thinks this was done to make it compatible with Bank deserves to be charged with way more than 20 dollars. For them it should be 60. Want to change language? Too bad.
I finally managed to play the first Paper Mario in December, thanks to NSO. And I have to say, if it wasn't for the "allign gimmick" of origami king (which gets kinda boring midway), and the fact that Paper Mario "64" is the first one, I would say that tonally, artistically, thematically, origami king could sit next to it. And the OST Is Just masterful, most bosses in Origami scratch that prog rock itch just right. Yeah they need definitely need to mix TYD and Origami for the next one.
@rvcolem1 Echoes of wisdom managed to sell around 4 million copies to date, and a second "2d branch" might still be more profitable to nintendo than a middle ground "ocarina 3d" type game. I think Nintendo knows that there's a portion of fans that would like something simpler. Hell, for them it would also cost less to develop. The question is how much would it sell? Between botw and totk the main series is expected to do 20/30 million numbers. Keep that in mind.
I would assume the aim of NSO is to have the entire retro first party library under subscription, but so far that hasn't ruled out remasters and remakes. Dunno about other Metroid Prime remasters, but I sure hope Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD both could come to Switch (1) in 2026.
@Dev-N it's strange how a sacred series such as Zelda has managed to find two full fledged producers after Miyamoto (Aonuma and Fujibayashi), but Smash, which is way more iterative, can't seem to move on from poor Sakurai. Respect for the man!
@Dr_Awkward LMAO, petulant? really? if you think i have been petulant i certainly struck a nerve. Try not to elevate your favourite product of entertainmet into a cult. Silksong it's not the bible and Team Cherry are not prophets. They developed two of the most beautiful vanias, but the difficulty curve in Silksong needs a fix or two. And breaking news, just like the first game got easier with patches, and i gues less pure to people like you, silksong will too. they're continuously buffing and nerfing crests, which is indicative of how having millions of players playing and testing their game, is much more valuable to them than the small team of testers they internally have. But i guess you're the kind of purist that doesn't update the 1.0 of any game just to brag. Looking forward to the next patches and "nerfs", as people with no jobs call them.
Ouch, I see people are again stuck on the difficulty argument. A difficulty selector is an accessibility issue, not an "author choice". Very few people in their 30s and 40s have the time and energies to "train themselves" on Silksong, and I can't respect the choice of team cherry to just make the title exclusive to those who don't have to deal with their family and other responsibilities. Just make the damn easy mode and explicitly tell the gamers that it's not the recommended setting to enjoy the title.
@JJtheTexan i remember playing it a few years after it came out on Wii, thinking "not so bad as people say". Replayed recently and...yeah, now i can definitely see how it's rough around the edges compared to the other main entries
People in their twenties, with plenty of time in their lives, and the tendency of elevating into a cult their favourite product of entertainment, will say it's just perfect as it is now, and the whole argument started because of the FOMO of rookies who didn't know better, so I suppose they'll turn off updates to be able to play the 1.0 in eternity, because the first patch has been announced to have some adjustments to economy/difficulty. There are plenty of reviews on Steam with 20+ hours that go in detail on what works and what's currently a bit broken in their opinion. It's called feedback.
2025, the year a lincensed LEGO set from Nintendo, aimed at the guts of high income 90s kids, came out at a lower price than Bananza. The wonders of the market.
I'm assuming Koizumi is involved? What a journey for him, it's truly come full circle. From Jungle Beat to Galaxy, then from Odyssey to Bananza. Stellar work!
Nintendo is this close on doing the right thing. Now they need to add a subset of mappable functions on the stick clicks, so we can swap between the wind waker fixed camera and a secondary standard mapping for the wind baton. This is also how bluepoint solved the 360 ports of the metal gear saga, where they had to find a way to fit a lot of buttons from playstation that weren't standard.
@SpaceboyScreams there's no official explanation, but Digital Foundry has speculated that right now the issue might be that the Display Port to HDMI converter inside the system doesn't currently support VRR. We all hope un update down the line will solve this, as it's one of the dumbest things the Switch 2 lacks at launch.
@CaptainQuo sadly none of the Ogre related titles are on NSO. It's a shame since Matsuno is a very talented director and writer, and I assume getting the rights from Quest for NSO, would be easier (cheaper?) than getting the rights for FF Tactics on GBA from Square Enix. We can Hope, but not too much. What's crazy is that none of these titles are available by themselves on any digital store, with the exception of Tactics Ogre Reborn, which you can find in the eshop and other storefronts, which is a a new edition of the 2010 remake for PSP of the SNES title.
@FlyingDunsparce i Hope so! Just finished Metroid prime remastered this week, and the fact that you can't unlock things with a GBA like in GameCube days was a bit of a let down. If they manage to include a GBA link mode in the GBA app that would be awesome.
Didn't they just make that "Play On" initiative? Renewing an NSO subscription would grant you a return in gold points. Weird Timing. I can say i yearly spent my gold points on indie software, but never ever used the vouchers for example.
I totally understand how something like this could quickly derail into political pettiness. While i am concerned how much this will impact prices for costumers, i urge everybody to step back and consider that videogames, as a hobby, are a luxury good. Like, the fact that Sony felt comfortable setting that PS5 pro price, is indicative of a lot of stuff. I suspect videogames were the last thought of the electorate that decided in majority for another Trump presidency. Right or wrong, just keep that in mind.
@GrailUK yes, but the model shown in the trailer has the joycon slots also colored. So if Nintendo does different colors of joycons down the line it gets confusing anyway. I don't think the color coding has been given too much "user experience" thought, which is odd, admittedly.
The playstation cross bar is what everyone with any common sense immediately thought of. And I have no problem with the people who think EOW UI is fine, but they need to understand not everyone is ok with the experience of searching a specific Lego piece for an hour inside a massive unsorted bin. It was ok when we were 7 yo, but considering there are entire dev departments for the UI, having a better option would be nice. Remember guys: it's ok to admit your favourite series has issues.
Here's the thing: the most logical thing from a consumer point of view is to find on the app the music of the library of games you can play on switch on your already active subscription. Is this the first formal hint of Wii and GameCube NSO library for switch 2?
Am I the only one not totally in love with the looks? The shiny floors with overused reflections surely gives it a coat of "look, I'm new, completely redone", and less that paper feel that origami king totally nailed. This feels cheaper than actually going for paper. To me anyway.
I'm actually surprised this is only the second studio they'll own in the states after Retro. I don't think this has necessarily anything to do with ports, but i fear Nintendo will prefer doing remasters of the gamecube titles, rather than putting them inside a new NSO tier. More money to be made and they've almost ran out of WiiU titles to port.
I read a review that had the best take, in my opinion, of its relevance against the first chapter which stands in the analogy between Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2 and these two Zeldas. In both cases the team had a lot of ideas that they could not execute in only one game. It's a different take on the same premises, by the same team, in both cases. Mario Galaxy and Breath of the wild will always have the historic merit of being the first, but the sequels are brilliant games on their own.
I'll wait for a deep digital foundry analisys, if it ever comes. I have 300+ hours on PC gamepass and i would like to have it on switch so i can visit a friend and use his internet connection to play local coop with a PC. I know the game now and i can stand the dips if it means playing local multiplatform. Yes the game it's just that good when played multi. I would love to possess a phisycal copy, but the fact that it will arrive at my door this summer at best, if not september, and maybe even without all the updates on it (which is a bummer, but admittedly wouldn't be a deal breaker on its own), it's like they didn't even try. They did it for the compulsive collectors, the majority of which won't even open the game. Microsoft shouldn't have gone with LRG, they sure lost some costumers. It just speaks about how poorly they push their IPs. Grounded is one of the best survivals of the generation and barely anyone knew about it.
If the porting is solid people should consider giving it a chance, it's on of the best survivals I played with friends. The main game shouldn't be that big of a problem if they aim 30 FPS, but I can totally see how building structures will be the thing that kills performance. I have hope though.
Here's the thing with limited run: they do pre-orders, then they sell out, and then you find 80% of the produced copies on ebay for 100+ dollars. I would like to read the reviews to know if this conversion is another 30 fps miracle or they had to cut too many corners before buying a physical copy from limited run that will arrive at my door a year from now anyway. Limited run is the worst choice to produce the basic version of any game.
@Tobunari agreed, just wishful thinking. Today Sakurai commented on the Sora amiibo saying that this technically marks the end of Smash. So no "Mario kart deluxe" treatment in sight. Hope he gets to do whatever he wants for the next system.
@SeantheDon29 agreed. If Ultimate was to receive a "deluxe" treatment like mario kart 8, i hope they introduce rollback netcode, trophies (really liked the "encyclopedia" nature of past entries), and a sidescrolling campaign (roguelite would be fine). there's also some space for a fighter pass volume three. For example it baffles me how capcom has not managed to get Leon inside smash. I mean, Joker has a gun! just keep the blood out and it should be fine with Nintendo!
It's safe to say Nintendo is fine for the next decade, considering the Mario movie by itself made more than a billion dollars. They just need to build customer retention on this installed base with a back compat digital library, adding the rest of their whole retro library with GC, Wii and DS. There's a discussion on what form factor they would need to repeat this success, and there's something to be said for the more plain reiterative design, since the GBA sold less than the GB and the 3DS sold less than the DS. The rumoured clamshell with a detachable screen might do the trick, but who knows. They surely need to repeat the original trailer for the switch with its simple "case of use" scenarios. That by itself was a clear enough communication to surpass WiiU in one year.
I don't think people understood this patent, it's actually genius. Beside getting DS retrogaming with NSO and getting a second chance at WiiU ideas, this design would make the dual screen gimmick totally optional for developers. By making the top screen detachable and swapped 180 degrees to close the console with a screen outward, nobody is forced to develop a game for two screens. A basic conversion of cyberpunk? just keep the console closed, with the 16:9 screen facing outward. both screens would require analogue sticks, and the patent seems to suggest so, with the both units described having concave sections to not get in the way of each other. Might be called Nintendo Split. You can split in two the console to put the main station in the dock and have some a WiiU experience (or a more basic in home streaming experience), or you can give the second screen to a friend of yours for local SPLIT-screen, just like the joycon concept, but with screens. hell, they can even rotate the switch logo 90 degrees and keep the snap sound to communicate the concept of the two units splitting. I get that people are scared of "gimmicks" from Nintendo, afraid they might screw up again and not recover, but the clamshell form factor has been by far the most succesful form factor for Nintendo, sales wise, and if they're aiming to port all of their library to NSO to sell the subscription, the dual screens problem would come up eventually.
@Inkless Nintendo is significantly behind in terms of features and fidelization compared to Sony and Xbox, so i hope they'll bring them back in the next console alongside the NSO subscription
i think the staff is asking the wrong audience. Of course everyone here will brag about how easy and streamlined they remember the water temple to be. Go to someone who doesn't know anything about Zelda and let him play the water temple. That's a proper test on great design. guys it's fine, ocarina can have a few downsides, it doesn't knock it off the pedistal.
@Serpenterror i'm not asking to play Breath of the wild on a SNES controller, i'm asking for a home and screenshot buttons, which are system features, and the N64 controller has. both.
I swear Nintendo is just incomprehensible sometimes. I bought the official SNES controller to enjoy both Mario Wonder and Mario RPG. Little did i know you can't remap the buttons like the switch pro controller, so you don't have a home or screenshot button. And i mean Mario RPG is a SNES remake! with the whole colored buttons thing! AND IT DOESN'T EVEN USE ZL OR ZR! ULTIMATE FACEPALM NINTENDO
The only thing that really bugs me about this announcement is that i thought the gamecube library would surely come out as a NSO subscription with the next console. Is Nintendo keeping the GC library for easy money remasters? That would be a bit lame.

@Inkless Nintendo is significantly behind in terms of features and fidelization compared to Sony and Xbox, so i hope they'll bring them back in the next console alongside the NSO subscription
Re: Soapbox: Ocarina Of Time's Water Temple Was Tough, But It Doesn't Deserve Its Reputation
i think the staff is asking the wrong audience.
Re: Review: Super Mario RPG - A Timeless Classic Returns In A Remake Done Right
@Serpenterror these shortcuts only work in the NSO apps. If only Nintendo enabled remapping for the SNES controller just like for pro controllers...
Re: Review: Super Mario RPG - A Timeless Classic Returns In A Remake Done Right
@Serpenterror i'm not asking to play Breath of the wild on a SNES controller, i'm asking for a home and screenshot buttons, which are system features, and the N64 controller has. both.
Re: Review: Super Mario RPG - A Timeless Classic Returns In A Remake Done Right
I swear Nintendo is just incomprehensible sometimes.
Re: Early Tech Analysis Suggests Paper Mario's Thousand-Year Door Remaster Might Run At 30FPS
The only thing that really bugs me about this announcement is that i thought the gamecube library would surely come out as a NSO subscription with the next console.
Is Nintendo keeping the GC library for easy money remasters? That would be a bit lame.
Re: Feature: The Mysterious Absence Of A Famicom Gem On Switch
We need DuckTales.
Nintendo make it happen.
Re: Pikmin 4 Will 'Rise To The Occasion' In Brand New Trailer
Nintendo choses the oddest quality of life features on their titles (when they do)
Re: Video: Unboxing The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Switch OLED
We need some unboxers to try UV light on this edition, because the white uroboro in the center of the dock doesn't make much sense IMHO
