From what we've seen the past few days, it looks more or less like a Switch (1), just bigger. So yeah, you could argue it's basically just a Switch Pro (think OG 3DS to New 3DS progression) and not something entirely new.
If so it will be entirely down to the games to prove it's worth buying.
7/10 is probably about right for the Switch version with much better controls than the Vita version, because of the extra buttons the Switch has compared to the Vita.
Still a pretty weak game imo though; 6/10 for the Vita version at most (may I recommend Soul Sacrifice Delta and Toukiden Kiwami if you have a Vita and like hunting games/MH clones).
@RetroGames Thanks for the list (I know it takes a lot of time to make such a list - but then again it's also quite fun).
Such lists are very subjective though (personal preferences and so on) and there's only 3 out of the 40 some games on your list I've actually played, that I still want to play; Street Fighter II (series); Resident Evil 4 and Fallout: New Vegas.
But still interesting to see what other peoples favorites are (and you DO know gaming that's for sure - but again.. personal preferences and so on).
I like 6 of the games on the list: Ms. Pac-Man, Doom, Resident Evil 4, Fallout 3, Batman Arkham City and TES: Skyrim.
And the 2 newest of them are from 2011. Just shows how much out of touch I am with contemporary gaming generally.
Edit: Oh, forgot Street Fighter II so that makes it 7.
@premko1 I can just say that on the 3DSs, you were only allowed to have your digital purchases on one 3DS (and it was all or nothing so to speak - transfer all or nothing). You weren't even able to reverse the process (going from a New 3DS back to an OG 3DS wasn't possible). Nintendo is very stingy and won't allow you to have access to your purchases on more than a single device (i'm pretty sure - they could change their policies of course - but I highly doubt they will).
256 GB internal storage sounds nice when you like me only have a 128 GB SD card (plus 32 GB internal storage) on the Switch Lite.
12 GB memory only compared to the Steam Deck's 16 GB seems a bit low though.
My real concern (and what nobody seems to have talked about) is how Nintendo is going to handle the backwards compatibility of people's digital libraries.
Physical libraries is a given as you just insert your Switch cartridges into the Switch 2's cartridge slot, but is Nintendo going to require you to do a complete system transfer like with the 3DSs when it comes to your digital library (I never owned a Wii so I don't know how it was handled on the Wii U).
Personally with a Switch 2 potentially not having a proper D-pad and maybe having to transfer your whole digital library in one go, it would have me wait for the Switch 2 Lite coming out in 2027/28 (I have a my Steam Deck for Resident Evil and what else might interest me on the AAA 3rd party front).
May I "shout out" for a game that NL didn't review, but still could be worth a look for a certain "demographic" of gamers; 'Death Trick: Double Blind' which is a sort of a detective/mystery visual novel (VN with the twitch that the game is actually really challenging). Not a game for just anybody, but good quality for those who dig these kind of games imo (Jake Hunter series comes to mind).
I really tried to like this 10 years ago on my Vita, but ended up really hating it in the end (spend 35 hours trying to see if it became better, but it just became worse - in single player mode at least - don't know if multiplayer is better - and don't care really).
I hope there will be a "proper D-pad" option as I use the D-pad on my Switch Lite a lot in fighting games (and arcade games as well).
If not I'll probably wait for a 'Switch Lite 2' (I'm also concerned about the "flimsyness" of the new Joy-cons - and drift issues - I'm a bit of a cheapskate, so I'm not gonna invest in further Joy-cons or getting them sent for repair).
Personally I'm just waiting for Tomb Raider IV-VI collection to drop to half price in about a year (and of course release first in february). I think we got more or less anything worthwhile remastered at this point, so I can't see anything coming (and new games for Switch that'd interest me - forget it).
I can't really see it happening; you got Steam Deck for PS5/Xbox Series X high end stuff and Switch(2) for the rest. The "handheld ship" has sailed a long time ago for Sony and Microsoft never had one.
I just bought Taito Milestones 2 collection 50% off (20 €) after buying the first collection a year ago (and the HyperMegaTech Super Pocket Taito Edition just before that)...
So I'm "fiddling" around with the games right, trying to figure out what games appeals the most to me (I got 4 of them already on the Super Pocket, but they're definitely better on my Switch Lite's bigger screen).
I'm at the 3 shmups right now, because I'm not really that much into the genre and want to them done with so to speak: They're are pretty good for the genre though; Darius II probably being the highlight with its super super wide screen and very high production values.
The Legend of Kage and The Newzealand Story are my favorites so far (I played them on the Superpocket already), but Solitary Fighter and Dinorex also stand out as interesting games (Ben Bero is interesting also - if not a little weird).
Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands and (probably) Rastan Saga are the classics in this collection I'd recon...
I've got the first Milestone collection, which have Elevator Action and Qix as the main attractions I guess (maybe Halley's Comet is really popular too? IDK).
And I got to say it's really grown on me as Alpine Ski, Wild Western, Chack'n Pop, The Fairyland Story and Space Seeker are all fun and interesting games from the first part of the 80's as well (the golden age of arcade games - 1978-86 - or thereabouts).
So I can recommend that one (this one is more focused on the latter half of the 80's and early 90's - which I generally find a boring period in arcade games history).
Konami Arcade Classics Resident Evil: Deadly Silence Jake Hunter Detective Story: Memories of the Past Namco Museum DS Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Mummy
I'm seriously contemplating upgrading my "Evercade ecosystem" from my HyperMegaTech Super Pocket Taito Edition to the upcoming Evercade EXP-R, that 1. has a nice price point 2. comes with a physical copy of the Evercade Tomb Raider collection 3. has a larger screen 4. has much better (and less crampy) controls than the Super Pockets 5. comes with TATE mode for vertically orientated games 6. hopefully you can reassign buttons to your preferences (works on some games now I understand - in Beta).
So, yeah, I've been playing quite a lot on my Super Pocket the last few days trying to get to the bottom of my Evercade library (the Taito games - 18 in all - although really good, I'm done with, it's only Elevator Action I still want to play, but I have that on my Switch Lite as well) and maybe(?) sell the Super Pocket at some point.
I'll probably sell my Atari Lynx Collection 2 cartridge at some point too as there's only one game I'm not done with (plus it's sold out from the publisher).
My 2 Duke Nukem cartidges I'm going to keep as they're just too good. I'll keep my Data East Collection 1 and Piko Arcade 1 cartridges too as there just are some excellent games on those you can't anywhere else on modern systems.
I'll probably get the Data East Arcade 2 cartridge along the Evercade EXP-R as there are 3 shmups on it that's seems appealing to me (and will have something to try out in the TATE mode). The Toaplan shmups on the other hand seems a bit to difficult for me.
I've only started Clear Sky briefly so far, but I think I will start with that one eventually, because it's considered the weakest in the trilogy (and because I want to play the games chronologically).
But I'm taking my time and probably will start playing the games around 1st of december when winter really starts to kick in. It will nice to play some story heavy games for a change that you haven't played before.
I have a few games om my Switch Lite that would benefit from a resolution/60 fps upgrade; the Resident Evil 5 remaster has The Mercenaries Reunion that has 10 extra characters (some of them are just skins of course); the RE 6 remaster is just so much better than the PS3/X360/PC versions that just had so many issues at launch (game was too dark in places no matter how much you turned up brightness; it had tons of extremely annoying QTEs you couldn't turn of; the camera was way too close to your character in a game where melee attacks are a big part of gameplay; the X360 version had/has serious framerate issues; you had to complete a whole chapter before the game saved - they fixed the camera, QTE and checkpoints issues in a patch a couple of month after launch and it made a lot more enjoyable).
Other games that would benefit from a 60 fps upgrade would be the three recently released S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, the Darksiders games, the Dark Souls remaster and many more that I'm not personally invested in (the Bioshock games, the Borderlands games, the Batman Arkham games, Skyrim, The Witcher 3 etc., etc.).
I got the bundle because it's actually cheaper to buy all the games at once than buying only separately 2. I don't know if the review mentions it, but the games' got a weapon/item wheel too, which makes a world of difference in games of "pure" PC (aka no controller support at all) origin. It was done really well in Quake for example.
I finally got my PC copy of Shadow of Chernobyl, that I've had for 15 years, up and running (lots of key bindings to do + experimenting with them).
And yeah, the game's a classic; the atmosphere and graphics are great. Combat on the other hand is challenging to say the least; the PC version is not optimized to controller play at all (no aim assist etc. options) all is geared towards playing with mouse and keyboard.
Now I will play the PC version a bit more and see how far I can get with combat being very challenging. The PS4/5 remasters have aim assist etc., I've read, so I believe the Switch version will have too.
Yeah, I might double dip if the Switch version plays better than the PC version (and performs at a steady 30 fps).
Nice, the day before my birthday (57th) and good to have during the dark months here in Denmark (november, december, january and february). I just hope it will run decently well on my Switch Lite and text won't be hard to read (although I do have a looking glass that I've used a few times in the past).
@NinChocolate Darksiders 3 got a 4/10 review iirc from NL because it has serious framerate issues halfway through (and it does).
I don't know what this game scored (or how serious the framerate issues are), but it is kind of "thought provoking" if this game scored highly and Darksiders 3 didn't, both having the same issues.
I bought a ton of digital games on my Vita and 3DS back in the day (and later on my my Switch and Steam Deck), but I've never had any issues re-downloading any of them.
Is it mainly an on-line games only issue where servers are shut down when there very little traffic on them? I sincerely hope so.
I have it pre-ordered (and downloaded), but I'm a bit burned out on fighting games right now, having just put 45 hours into my SNK Neo Geo library of fighting games the last 3 weeks (having taken advantage of/being lured into buying the last 6 Neo Geo King of Fighters games that I didn't already have in what you could call the "30 years anniversary" KOF 50% off sale going on atm).
But in 3 days time I'm sure I'm ready to take on the challenge of diving into the Marvel vs. Capcom Collection, I just need to get my dopamine level down to normal so I go into it "sober" so to speak (I'm sure it will be great).
The problem I have with the games mentioned is that I have a Steam Deck and easily could have played all of these games years ago, yet I've only played Fallout 4 and RE4 remake.
The former I've tried getting into several times but it simply wasn't my thing (way to many tough enemies hindering my progress etc.) and RE4 remake was only good imo (too much padding for my taste plus rather weak graphics - I really loved the Ada DLC though, it was better than the original one imo).
I would be willing to bet 10 € that these rumours are actually true. It seems like Switch sales number are really winding down in the West (not so much in Japan though).
It's sure been as stressful last 6-7 hours for me . Looking forward to the Direct, watching it, getting hyped because there were some game announcement that excited me, writing and reading comments for the articles of said exciting games.
Yeah, it's all a bit crazy (I'm a passionate man ). Kinda glad that's it's only Nintendo that really has this effect on me these day, pheew!
Almost feels a bit too early (september 12th) as I've played around 130 hours in Fighting Games in 2024 so far, and I'm a bit burned out on the genre right now (and I still have around 10-12 games in the genre that I'm not done with).
But it's still nice to see what the buzz about these games is (never played any of the them).
The just announced Capcom Fighting Collection 2 is nice to have, to have something to look forward to 2025. And it also feels like we're getting to the "bottom of the well" when it comes to the classic pixel art Fighting Games with especially the CvS games (SNK's own pixel art Fighting Games are all available through Arcade/Neo Geo Archives, I think - not with online though).
I'm here for the "Embracer/THQ is bad" comments. But were are they? There's always an abundance of them when there's something Darksiders related. Where are those people now?
(or is it only when it's Darksiders people have something against "evil Embracer" - because DS 3 sucked you know)
I played a lot of fighting games last week after getting SNK vs. Capcom SVC Chaos for my Switch Lite.
It isn't the best fighting game I've ever played, but it is quite unique in its "tone" (music, graphics - even down to the different "conversations" between the fighters) imo.
It felt like a survival horror fighting game in a sense with everything being pretty bleak and gritty. Not very uplifting I admit. Pretty rough in single player mode (which is all I play) too with balancing issues/sometimes being directly unfair (Goenitz with his never ending "mini tornados" attacks in particular).
But I found out some of the characters are way better to play as than others. I boiled it down to 7 fighters; Sagat, Chun-Li and Vega, because they have long legs basically (good for ground sweeping - which isn't easy in this game imo) and of the SNK ones; Mr. Karate (normal), Iori, Terry and Mai (the latter 4 because they simply seemed overpowered compared to others).
I put 10 hours into the game and is burned out on it for now, but now I know what fighters to focus when I pick it up again in a month or two. The game also spurred me into finishing up Guilty Gear, Street Alpha and III subseries plus Capcom's Fighting Games Collection (you got to "work" on your back catalogue once in a while ).
This week I haven't played much at all, but just started Lost Planet 3 (which is a somewhat underrated game imo) again on my Steam Deck today after a 3 month complete hiatus from PlayStation/Xbox/PC style AAA games (it's nice to play something that requires sticks again ).
A new Darksiders game starring War would nice. He's the next in line I would say (War, Death, Fury, Strife and then War again).
Just make his character model more normal (not like a Teletubbie), like Fury in 3 (she was really well done imo). AND please do not overdo the dungeons/environmental puzzles like in 1 and 2.
Higher performance (60 fps) on Resident Evil 5 and 6 in particular (they're better than on Steam Deck because they're actual remasters - 5 even has extra content) would help persuade me into buying a Switch successor. But hot d*** it's still gonna be a hard sell for Nintendo, now that I've played all the PS4 generation games I wanted on my Steam Deck (and not even been that impressed with them generally).
What on earth is Nintendo gonna sell me on a Switch successor when I'm not into their 1st party games? I've already dived extremely deep into the Switch's library of old games. Beyond the Capcom vs SNK games and the upcoming Marvel vs Capcom collection I feel like I've already scraped the bottom of the barrel in that regard.
But it's an industry wide problem really; Sony and Microsoft have even less to offer imo (and I do prefer handhelds - actually haven't played on my PS4 for more than 2 years).
I still have the Marvel vs Capcom collection coming and have quite a few other fighting games (plus a few other bits and pieces here and there) on the system I'm not done with.
In a way I'm ready, but I'm not gonna buy into something that hasn't got a proper D-pad. Plus I'm a bit worried there won't be that many games I'm interested in on a new system. So I might have to wait for a Switch 2 Lite.
@PKDuckman You have to consider that the Arcade Archives games doesn't have online multiplayer. This even has rollback netcode (locked behind NSO though along the leader boards - which is a bit of a bummer imo).
But yeah, I also find it a bit pricey. But then again it has a ton (36) of interesting fighters and is imo a quite unique take on the Fighting Game genre; it's rather gritty and bleak and it seems like throws/grabs are integral to the gameplay, if you want to succeed (game's quite difficult even on lowest difficulty imo).
Pro tip: Assign LP+LK to ZL and SP+SK to ZR (or vice versa) and you have each fighters 2 throws/grabs easily accessible. (you have to stand very close to your opponent before they work).
Real nice surprise here in a (for me at least) drought period across all platforms. Not exactly a new game, but I've never played it before, so in a sense it is new to me.
And these 2D fighting games they haven't really changed that much since the 90's when it comes to gameplay, have they? (when it comes to graphics I'd say the pixel art ones are actually the more charming/atmospheric)
@Gryzor I believe more in craftsmanship than art these days (I'm 56). I prefer a well paced crime novel with a good social realistic plot over the more grandeur "very important tale" (philosophic) novels.
It's the same with music really; a really well crafted song (that can be as old as it takes) does it for me, as long as it has a good (not too lofty) lyric a good melody and some good harmonies under it (basically if it works with some guitar chords underneath the sung words/melody).
It's the same with video games really; some fun mechanics to play around with plus some characters I can relate to. I don't like playing as criminals or bad guys in general (although there are few omissions to the rule, like Wesker from the Resident Evil series or Vega from the Street Fighter games).
@Yousef- Ok, I was probably a bit "bombastic" in my statement (just had my weekly beer - that's one beer mind you). But yeah I've gotten tired of AAA story heavy games the last few years. Just feels like you have to put to much of an invest into them before you get anything back.
Even Resident Evil games I've grown tired of; too much emphasis on being scary the last 5 games or so. They were never really that scary back in the day anyway. Creepy yes, but more like action blasts really (too a varying degree of course - but the action was satisfying right from the first one imo).
I've been playing more and more arcade (action) style games (read old games) over the past few years. So yeah he's right, it's all about the action (adrenaline/dopamine boost) in the end. Video games are not art imo, they're just a fun way to kill some time.
My Switch Lite is my 2nd favorite Nintendo platform ever. It's such a solid handheld that I've had very few issues with (no drifting for example). The only downside to it, is that it looks a bit like a Playmobil toy imo.

@Orpheus79V You're probably right, now you say it. The Switch OS is a lot more simple than the Steam Deck's, which has massive updates very regularly.

A new Lost Planet in the vein of 3 as I quite liked that (or 1 that was pretty good too). Also a new 3D Bionic Commando would be nice.

What's kind of interesting is the position of the left stick (and "D-pad") compared to the Wii U and Switch(1) and right stick and (ABXY buttons).

I don't know if the review mentions it, but the games' got a weapon/item wheel too, which makes a world of difference in games of "pure" PC (aka no controller support at all) origin. It was done really well in Quake for example.
Re: STALKER: Legends Of The Zone Trilogy Estimated Switch File Size Seemingly Revealed
Re: The Original 'Stalker' Trilogy Is Launching On Switch This Halloween
Nice, the day before my birthday (57th) and good to have during the dark months here in Denmark (november, december, january and february). I just hope it will run decently well on my Switch Lite and text won't be hard to read (although I do have a looking glass that I've used a few times in the past).
Re: Poll: Are You Bothered By The Frame Rate In Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom?
@NinChocolate Darksiders 3 got a 4/10 review iirc from NL because it has serious framerate issues halfway through (and it does).
I don't know what this game scored (or how serious the framerate issues are), but it is kind of "thought provoking" if this game scored highly and Darksiders 3 didn't, both having the same issues.
Re: Californian Law Dictates Storefronts Be Honest About Digital Game Ownership
I bought a ton of digital games on my Vita and 3DS back in the day (and later on my my Switch and Steam Deck), but I've never had any issues re-downloading any of them.
Is it mainly an on-line games only issue where servers are shut down when there very little traffic on them? I sincerely hope so.
Re: Review: Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics (Switch) - A Stunning Showcase Of '90s Fighter Evolution
Re: Talking Point: What Game Should Be 'Switch 2's 'Skyrim Moment'?
The problem I have with the games mentioned is that I have a Steam Deck and easily could have played all of these games years ago, yet I've only played Fallout 4 and RE4 remake.
The former I've tried getting into several times but it simply wasn't my thing (way to many tough enemies hindering my progress etc.) and RE4 remake was only good imo (too much padding for my taste plus rather weak graphics - I really loved the Ada DLC though, it was better than the original one imo).
Re: Talking Point: What Game Should Be 'Switch 2's 'Skyrim Moment'?
Resident Evil Revelations 3 (timed exclusive).
Re: Rumour: 'Industry Whispers' Fuel Speculation Of A Switch 2 Reveal This Month
I would be willing to bet 10 € that these rumours are actually true. It seems like Switch sales number are really winding down in the West (not so much in Japan though).
Re: Reaction: Shadow Drops & Surprises - A Stuffed Direct With Something For Everyone
Re: 'STALKER: Legends Of The Zone Trilogy' Shoots Onto Switch This November
I'll probably wait for a sale in a few years. Not sure how well these actually play. But I do like something akin Fallout thematically, so..
Re: Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection Punches Up September Release
Not a bad Direct at all Nintendo/Capcom/Snk.
Re: Nintendo Indie World & Partner Direct Announced For Tomorrow, August 27th 2024
Not really expecting anything other than maybe a release date for Marvel vs. Capcom Arcade Collection.
Re: Hands On: Epic Mickey: Rebrushed - A Fresh Coat Of Paint For A Once-Flawed Platformer
I'm here for the "Embracer/THQ is bad" comments. But were are they? There's always an abundance of them when there's something Darksiders related. Where are those people now?
(or is it only when it's Darksiders people have something against "evil Embracer" - because DS 3 sucked you know)
Re: Capcom Wants To Revive All Of Its Legacy Fighting Games On Modern Platforms
The 2 Capcom vs. SNK games would be nice. Other than I don't know? (maybe Ultra SF IV and SF V - but the latter is probably Sony (console) exclusive)
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (3rd August)
Re: Round Up: Every Nintendo Reveal And More At THQ Nordic's 2024 Showcase
A new Darksiders game starring War would nice. He's the next in line I would say (War, Death, Fury, Strife and then War again).
Just make his character model more normal (not like a Teletubbie), like Fury in 3 (she was really well done imo). AND please do not overdo the dungeons/environmental puzzles like in 1 and 2.
Re: Nintendo Life's Switch Summer Survey 2024
Re: Nintendo Life's Switch Summer Survey 2024
Nice, I can have my say on the state of Nintendo anonymously (and be negative if I feel like it without nobody knowing ). Nice.
Re: Poll: Are You Ready To Move On From The Switch?
I still have the Marvel vs Capcom collection coming and have quite a few other fighting games (plus a few other bits and pieces here and there) on the system I'm not done with.
In a way I'm ready, but I'm not gonna buy into something that hasn't got a proper D-pad. Plus I'm a bit worried there won't be that many games I'm interested in on a new system. So I might have to wait for a Switch 2 Lite.
Re: Reminder: SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos Is Now Available For Switch
Re: SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos Announced For Nintendo Switch
Re: Random: "Let Them Play, First Thing!" - Sakurai Is Tired Of Slow Game Openings
Re: Random: "Let Them Play, First Thing!" - Sakurai Is Tired Of Slow Game Openings
Re: Random: "Let Them Play, First Thing!" - Sakurai Is Tired Of Slow Game Openings
I've been playing more and more arcade (action) style games (read old games) over the past few years. So yeah he's right, it's all about the action (adrenaline/dopamine boost) in the end. Video games are not art imo, they're just a fun way to kill some time.
Re: 'Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club' Launches On Switch Next Month
Is the drought real? (sorry I'll let myself out of the backdoor to this Nintendo party and return to my Hyper Mega Tech Super Pocket)
Re: Switch Is Now Nintendo's Longest-Serving Flagship Home Console
My Switch Lite is my 2nd favorite Nintendo platform ever. It's such a solid handheld that I've had very few issues with (no drifting for example). The only downside to it, is that it looks a bit like a Playmobil toy imo.
