Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (June 3rd)

@Vyacheslav333 Just watched a bit of a walkthrough of Real Bout FF2 NC on Youtube played with the Hon-Fu character. It looks really good (love some good Kung Fu action - Fei Long is my second favorite character in the Street Fighter games)

Will definitely get the game when I've worked my way through my King of Fighters games. Thanks for the recommendation!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (June 3rd)

@Vyacheslav333 I already have Garou: MotW on my Vita (and yeah it's pretty good I admit) and I'm not really into Samurais/Sword/Weapon fighting fighting games.

But yeah, I'm still considering getting another Fatal Fury game (Garou: MotW is a Fatal Fury game after all) since you recommend it, I might consider getting Real Bout FF2 NC (the non Garou: MotW Fatal Furys are kind of interesting with their "lane shifting" mechanic)

The last 2 weeks I've been continuing my "Handheld Fighting Games Quest" (don't take that too seriously ) after a three month hiatus, and by accident stumbled over SNK's King of Fighters series this monday. I ended up buying 97, the seminal 98, 99 and 2002.

97 was quite ok. 98 is really good but slightly overrated imo. 99 I bought to try out the Striker system and because the stages looked great. My favorite this far though is 2002 with great looking stages and some more interesting fighters/characters overall (plus it plays more or less like 98 - just a bit better imo)

Re: Japanese Charts: Nintendo Cleans Up As Zelda Continues To Dominate

shgamer

Will be interesting to see how long the "TotK effect" will last.
Right now the game itself and various SKUs of the Switch are selling like hotcakes around the world from what I can deduct from various Amazon best selling video games lists etc.

But TotK was always going to be a "Top heavy" game sales wise, being the successor to a complete smash hit. Just look at this weeks japanese chart; in three weeks TotK has sold almost 75% of what BotW managed to sell in 6 years.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (May 27th)

Today I've been playing a bit of Sega's 3D Thunder Blade and 3D Galaxy Force II and especially the former is actually really, really good with the 3D effect on.

Sunday I caved in and bought Ultra Street Fighter II The Final Challengers at full price digitally (never seems to go on sale and it was even more expensive physically).

And I gotta say that this is by far the best version of Street Fighter II I've played (and I've played all of the arcade versions).

It seems better balanced in single player mode (arcade). Ryu is not so overpowered anymore, and generally they toned down difficulty a lot for the easier difficulty levels. One of my favourite Switch games now.

Re: UK Charts: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Is The Biggest Boxed Launch Of 2023

shgamer

@PinderSchloss We're all getting a bit impatient/edgy in the wait for new hardware (and hopefully some games we - "I " - want to play - although I haven't exactly got high hopes when it comes to that personally - and I've played video games since 1980 regularly, so)...

But it's their job to write about what is popular (mostly) and there really just isn't much else big other than Pikmin 4 and some DLC on the horizon... so

Re: Square Enix Game Sales Down 12.2% Despite Multiple High-Profile Releases

Still suspect them selling their Eidos portfolio (Tomb Raider, Deus Ex etc.) to Embracer Group for only $300 million, to help fund Final Fantasy XVI (kind of happy that it's now Embracer Group - THQ Nordic etc. - that has Tomb Raider - I trust them more in delivering a more "true" Tomb Raider experience than SquareEnix I admit)

But yes Final Fantasy XVI is probably a very important game for SE.

Re: Random: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Tops GQ's 100 Greatest Games Of All Time

shgamer

@Cia It's a very Anglosaxon centric list you have to admit; if you were going to be a bit nasty, you could almost say the list is racist; Japan is imo the most important country in the history of gaming (forget about Atari and the US - it was japanese games that like REALLY popularized video games) and yet the compilers of this hasn't reached (it seems from the names and companies) out to ONE single japanese "gaming personality (could be a language issue - but still it's HIGHLY problematic when you claim to have compiled (the?) a list of the 100 greatest video games ever. It is bordering on being racist imo.

Re: Here Are The Top Ten Best-Selling Nintendo Switch Games As Of March 2023

shgamer

Wonder if we'll get some updated sales numbers later for the likes of Metroid Prime remaster, Bayonetta 3, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3 etc. Could be interesting to see how well those have fared.

As for the top 10 itself Mario Kart is still doing really well. The rest not that well (but still decent I suppose). Things are starting to really slow down for the Switch in general (both in hardware and software)

When Nintendo will announce a successor I'm not sure, though I think it won't have a release date later than spring 2024 (and it could come out as early as the holidays 2023).

The fact that Nintendo haven't taken advantage of the Mario movie releasing, by actually releasing some new Mario games could point to a holiday 2023 release of the Switch successor.

There'd still be some buzz left from the movie and a new Mario game(s) for the Switch successor could help move a healthy number of new consoles early on.

Re: Soapbox: Game & Watch Still Scratches A Very Particular Itch, And I Need More

shgamer

I agree with one of the earlier posters; Donkey Kong Jr. G&W is a downright amazing game for what is (a single level/screen game)
It just has so much variety in the game play crammed into that little screen imo.

Another really, really good non Nintendo "bib bib" one screen game is Epoch's Monster Panic (also released as Crazy Kong in the UK by Grandstand). It also has a lot of game play crammed into one single screen.

Re: Video: The OneXPlayer 2 Is Very Switch-Inspired, But What Do We Make Of It?

shgamer

The Steam Deck has been good for me (and IS a competitor to the Switch at $399). But I'm over the "honeymoon" period with it (only so many PS3/Xbox 360 games I wish to revisit in "handheld mode")

Now it will interesting to see when and what Nintendo will offer as their Switch successor. Personally I hope for full backwards compatibility, 60 fps/at least 720p handheld mode, upgrade paths for (at least) the most popular games (could come with a small "fee" - I'd be fine with that), no "flimsy joy-cons" issues, an OLED screen as standard and capability of playing (somewhat) downgraded PS5/Xbox Series S ports.

If all of this, more or less, became a reality, I would consider buying a Switch successor (though I'd probably still keep my Steam Deck for certain games I doubt will come to the Switch successor)

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (May 6th)

shgamer

Got myself a physical copy of Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning (and a physical copy of Darksiders III as well - even though I already own digital copies for both my Switch and my Steam Deck - just really like that game) and I've put 45 minutes into the former so far (still in the tutorial stages - but it seems quite good, if not a little dark)

Gonna spend time with the game this weekend to get acquainted to its "systems" (so far sword and bow combat plus stealth, dagger take downs, shield blocking and magic). Have a nice weekend everybody.

Re: Video: Everything That Could Go Wrong With The Switch's Successor

shgamer

I doubt they make it digital only (besides I've noticed that the Archive Archives arcade games hasn't been on sale for a long time - I think they are preparing for a Switch successor being backwards compatible - no need to discount the games when they just carry over to the next system without having to be ported)

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 18th)

shgamer

Ok, just got me Street Fighter Alpha 2 and 3 also for Capcom Arcade Stadium 2nd (46% off atm - only a bit over an € per game).

I already own them via the 30th Anniversay Collection, but I discovered some added functionality in the Arcade Stadium "package(s)". Not only are leaderboards free (no need for NSO), but there's also a rewind funtion you can assign to any button.

But best of all (I don't really use the rewind function myself) you can assign a button to perform the light, medium and heavy punches at the same time and another button for the kicks (I use respectively ZL and ZR)

At first I didn't know what this was for (it's a feature in the PS1 version of Street Fighter Alpha 2 too btw) as pushing either of the buttons assigned just did (iirc) a light punch or light kick (it didn't do all three of them at the same time of course).

But then I realized that some of the Special Moves, EX Move, Super Combos, Custom Combos (or what they're called) are triggered by pressing 2 (or sometimes more) of the punch and kick buttons at the same time (when your meter is full/ready that is).

So this way you have an option to do a "shortcut" by pressing either one of these "special" buttons or both simultaneously (depending on the game you're playing; the state the meter is in etc. of course)

What Arcade Stadium 2nd (and probably also the first Arcade Stadium) also does a lot better than for example the 30th Anniversary Collection, is explaining how the games actually work. It comes with a very detailed and comprehensive manual for each and every game available.

It's such a wonderful package(s) imo, and I really hope Capcom will continue their good work and make 3rd and 4th Stadiums with the rest of their arcade games library.

Re: 81 Must-Have Games You Should Pick Up In The Switch eShop Sale (Europe)

shgamer

All the Capcom Arcade Stadium 2nd games are 46% off (a little over an € a piece).

I got the 3 Darkstalkers games and especially Vampire Saviour: The Lord of Vampire is a complete steal (all the games are in reality a steal at that price imo).

I'm looking into maybe getting SonSon and the 2 Megaman fighting games as well (there are a number Street Fighter games on there too - but I've already got those in the 30th Anniversary Collection)

There's leaderboards available for free as well (NSO is not needed) with Score, Timed and Special challenges to take up.

Edit: Ok, SonSon is actually free it seems.

It's quite an amazing package overall if you ask me.

Re: Feature: 19 Game Boy Games We'd Love To See On Nintendo Switch Online

shgamer

I have 4 Game Boy games; Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare (the novelty Game Boy Color game that for some reason ended up in the NSO's Game Boy library).

Then I have 3 OG Game Boy games that I've bought after I got myself a Game Boy Advance 5 years ago (and after doing a very thorough research that is)

These 3 are Gradius: Interstellar Assault, Batman: Return of the Joker and Batman: Forever. These are all great games imo (although I haven't gotten time to really "dig" into them yet)

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 11th)

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D on 3DS.

Started the game over again (something you can only do in the digital version - and maybe in some of the later physical reprints - not totally sure about that).

This time I'm using Jill with her own weapons load out (and not cheaping out and using Rebecca's overpowered load out).

My goal is to achieve the highest rank (SS) on all mission with Jill with said load out. I've just unlocked the EX missions yesterday and they are HARD (even the level 5 missions of the normal missions are tough).

I play solo, but use the C control configuration, as you can move and shoot in that one, using the face buttons (A, B, X and Y) as a substitute for the missing right stick for camera control.

It takes a while to get under your skin, but the game is so much more doable compared to the one stick default control configuration.

Game's not that expensive on eShop (10 €, I think) and you can erase your save to start all over (it's a game about unlocking skills and leveling them up, so it's nice you can wipe them out in the digital version).

Get it before the 3DS eShop closes down! It's a great game!

Re: Nintendo's Investor Q&A Promises Switch Isn't Dead After Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

shgamer

Well Nintendo supported the 3DS quite well until the end of 2018 (the last game they released for it was Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn early march 2019), so we COULD see a Switch successor launch as early as november this year imo.

I was also impressed with the latest Nintendo Direct initially, but then I compared it to the one a year ago, and I ended finding it quite underwhelming.

The 2022 february direct had a much better line up imo, with games like Portal 1 & 2, Assassin's Creed the Ezio collection, Fire Emblem Warriors Three hopes, No man´s sky, Splatoon 3, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Kirby and the forgotten land and Nintendo Switch Sports.

Sure this year there were a relatively meaty trailer for Zelda TotK, demos for various upcoming games instantly available, the shadow drop of Metroid Prime Remastered (also instantly available) plus various DLC packs got release dates etc.

But in hindsight it composed of a lot of remasters of rather niche old games plus a few new also rather niche titles; like that rhythm game or the fashion game.

I still think Nintendo will reveal/announce the Switch successor late june/early july for a late november launch, as I think Nintendo is saving the real big hitters for that one (plus of course a frame rate/screen resolution boosted next gen version of Zelda TotK)

Re: Nintendo Direct Confirmed For Tomorrow, 8th February 2023

shgamer

@anoyonmus Yeah, Mercenaries in Village is actually pretty damn fun (especially after they added Chris Redfield in the DLC), but I haven't really gotten around to playing it much yet (still too many games in my backlog - almost feels like there's too many RE games )

But Mercenaries 3D is a Nintendo (3DS) exclusive, so maybe they could do something with the game on Switch (or its successor). The game's a ton of fun imo, but it wasn't that successful, so idk..

RE4 remake will probably have Mercenaries as well, though I haven't I haven't heard anything of it yet. A good Mercenaries mode where could you it play solo too would be nice.

(I never could get into RE5's Mercenaries personally, because it's a bit too cumbersome/difficult for me to play it solo - Merc. 3D did offer a number of QoL improvements, using the touch screen for healing etc.)

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 4th)

I've been working on unlocking the 5 extra (arcade) games in the PSP Sega Megadrive (Genesis) Collection (unfortunately it seems to have been delisted on the Vita's PS Store) on my Vita most week.

To my surprise I actually ended up liking Tip Top (Congo Bongo) more than Super Zaxxon as the latter is just too difficult for me (I would have preferred normal Zaxxon).

I'm also looking into playing some of the original Castlevania: Rondo of Blood via The Dracula X Chronicles PSP "collection" (the 2.5D remake of RoB hasn't aged well graphically - but you can unlock Symphony of the Night as well as part of the package).

I've also been playing (and will play) SNK's Victory Road (the sequel to Ikari Warriors) also on my Vita as I've always had a bit of a soft spot for that one (despite all it's weirdness/crazy-ness).
