I have got back into playing my Hyper Mega Tech Super Pocket Taito Edition (yeah, that's its full name) the last 3 days after the announcement of the Atari and Technos editions of said hardware.
I've finally been putting some real time into the Evercade Atari Lynx Collection 2, and have had a real good time. The games on this collection were all made by Epyx (of Summer, Winter, California, World etc. Games fame) and are of a generally high standard imo.
Now I'm contemplating getting the Technos Edition when it launches this october. It will come with a pretty much full package of the Double Dragon games (all 3 arcade games, the SNES game, the NES version of the first one and a Gameboy iteration too).
It will also contain Renegade which I really liked on the ZX Spectrum. All in all 15 games games for 60 € including the hardware.
I might end up selling my Taito Edition as I've played more or less all that I want on that one (and the ones I still want to play I have on my Switch Lite also). But then again I might end up keeping it, because it's pretty cool .
I voted for Tomb Raider I-III Remastered collection (although I still haven't finished more than the first one).
But for genuinely new games, Alone in the Dark (2024), though it's not on Switch (it bombed commercially - probably shows how out of sync I am with current trends - I'm 56 ).
My only concern (other than when they are going to show it) is that if you stock up to early on components, you might end up with something that is relatively dated when it's released.
@TKundNobody Because it's a 3rd party PlayStation exclusive. Sony publishes their games on PC/smartphones these days because they don't see them as direct competitors (although you could argue PC IS a direct competitor to Sony imo).
And it's not like Nintendo is much better when it comes to holding on to 3rd party exclusives. It took 12 years before they allowed REmake and RE Zero to be released on other platforms.
I have been playing a ton of Fighting Games the last 3 weeks or so, and gotten really fed up with the genre.. but I just stumbled over Crypt Stalker Ultimate Edition at the eShop for 2 €, and that's actually looking really promising from what I've played so far.
It's a more or less a blatant rip-off of the old NES Castlevania games (but so are the Bloodstained Curse of the Moon games). The package even comes with an extra Gameboy style (handheld) game that looks very much the same as the Gameboy Castlevanias plus 6 extra levels to the main (console) game called The Lost Sequel and a boss rush mode.
Reminds me I need to go back and play some of the free update games. Some of them were quite interesting. And then there's 2600 Millipede which is just such an amazing game.
Not really a Marvel fan (tried, but DC always was my favorite superhero brand - now I've outgrown superheroes completely many years ago..).
But.. pixel art, being in the midst of my Handheld Fighting Game Quest for better or worse (don't take that TOO seriously - I'm not completely mad), being a Capcom fanboy AND with nothing else on the horizon it's a pretty big catch for me personally.
Having Marvel vs Capcom collection presumably sometimes in the fall will be really nice. Just hope the games are generally a bit better than Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 which I found very confusing/too "flashy".
Played through it twice on PSOne. Good game that has quite challenging combat (better than the original RE trilogy imo) and some nice puzzles/story/characters/graphics too.
I'll continue digging into the Capcom Fighting Collection that I got on sale a few days ago.
So far the highlights have been Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition (basically all the 5 iterations of SF II in one package) and Vampire Savior: The Lord of Vampire (as it's by far the best of the Darkstalkers games imo).
The good thing about this collection is that there is a number of QoL improvements added to it; high scores are saved automatically when you quit the games; there's an extra very, very easy (zero star) difficulty compared to the original arcade roms.
And last but not least you can assign Supers, Specials, EX, combo etc. to a single button making it much easier (and enjoyable) for fighting game noobs like me.
Now that SNK will soon have 2 Fatal Fury characters in Street Fighter 6, can we please have some SNK vs. Capcom (and vice versa) games on Arcade Archives?
Still dabbling with some old Sinclair ZX Spectrum games in the Fuse emulator on PSP. I actually thought I was done with them, but no, there are like 40 games on the system that are still worth playing imo (mostly arcade ports and arcade-like games as that's what I prefer).
(Ok, I'm Speccy fanboy I admit - although I did have a Commodore 64 and an Amstrad CPC at some point back in the day - went back to the Spectrum in both cases as neither ever really "clicked" with me)
@OorWullie Hi, I've put it on wishlist so far, as I think 6 € is a bit pricey for me personally (I'm also trying to cut my spending on videogames down in general).
@Zeebor15 Yes, the early 80's was the Wild West of videogames/computers (bootlegs of various popular arcade games/tons of unofficial clones on 8 bit home computers).
@Zeebor15 Yeah, I was a bit afraid that the rights to Intellivision's various arcade ports are not owned by Intellivision (now Atari) anymore (but I still hope there'll be a solution as I don't think I'm that much into the "first party" games).
Edit: Blaze Entertainment (Evercade and Hyper Megatech) did manage to negotiate some pretty good deals for their various (physical) arcade collection cartridges, so maybe there's a chance Atari could do that as well for some of the best arcade ports on the Intellivision system.
Give me 'Turbo', 'Bumb 'n' Jump', 'Lock 'N' Chase' (maybe?) and the aforementioned 'Lady Bug' plus around 50 more titles from the library (and maybe some documentation of the Intellivision history) and I would gladly pay 40 € for an Intellivision 50 (or rather 45 - it's from 1979) collection.
@Serpenterror IIRC correctly Warner actually bought (or at least invested a lot in) Atari all the way back in 1976, because the Atari VCS was proving very costly to develop.
Later Jack Tamriel bought the hardware/home computer/console software part of Atari when he was thrown out of Commodore for selling their hardware to cheaply.
@Chaos_Knight Yeah, you could say that. And it could be a quite possible scenario. But Nintendo could also see Shiver as a "back-up" if they ended up in a situation (like Sony, like Microsoft) where they had to try porting some of their games to PC for example.
I've been looking a bit into it and Silpheed does looks like something that's a true classic regardless of what system it's on. I'll probably get that one as I do like these pseudo 3D games (Space Harrier etc.).
Kinda reminds me of pipe dream I had around 5 year ago; having selected Sinclair ZX Spectrum games on the Switch for maybe 2 € a piece. Totally unrealistic when you think of the nature of the ZX Spectrum; being a completely open platform with literally 100s of publisher and 1000s of authors/game developers to track down (would be a complete mess logistically).
PC-88(00) and it's big brother PC-98(00) on the other hand was extremely popular in 80's and 90's in Japan it seems (the latter sold 18 million units - but then it was basically a PC - that later versions of supported DOS and Windows). It all makes much more sense (if you're japanese at least) as it probably has some real classics.
It still bums me a bit that the ZX Spectrum doesn't get any real limelight/recognition (except on the demo/hobby developer/emulation scene where there's still tons of stuff happening). IMO it and the Commodore 64 were the most successful and capable 8 bit home computers (at least when it came to arcade ports and action games in general - there were tons of other interesting games back then in other genres as well).
Of course it's not that there haven't been people trying (we've had a couple of hardware ZX Spectrums - one successful - the other not so much). But it would be nice to have the best ZX Spectrum games on something like the Switch. But then again as I said, it's probably just a pipe dream.
I'm going to continue playing some more Tutankham (1982 Konami arcade game that just released on Arcade Archives this thursday ) and then maybe later some fighting game (probably Super Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers SNES version over on my 3DS).
@GameOtaku I see it as a rather desperate move to squeeze the last money out of it (and stir up some attention towards its sequel, which hasn't done to well - there's a reason Tencent bought Techland recently). Game's probably been on Xbox Gamepass, PC Gamepass and PlayStation+ for years.
I see it as a complete fire sale (I just bought the Tutankham 1982 arcade game for 7 € in comparison, but I wouldn't touch Dying Light even if they gave it to me for free).
Meanwhile Dying Light Standard Edition right now is 3 freaking € over at Steam. If that don't tell people digital is the future what else does?
(and I'm not even tempted to buy it because I value my time and general surplus more than playing the game - to be honest I can't be a**** to put the hours into it it requires to experience it lol - enough is enough!)
And to those who wants it to be called, "Switch 2", that's the epitome of plain. And btw if the "U" in Wii U was supposed to signal "You", why wouldn't the "2" in Switch 2 signal "Too" (like in just another Switch).
Physical is good to get your products displayed at actual brick and mortar shops. Works at bit like ads. The publisher makes less money though compared to digital as there's middlemen, shipping and manufacturing of the case and media.
@Lord From what I heard (rumour of course - nothing official) they ended up using the ideas they had for Revelations 3's story in Village. Revelations 3 is probably never going to happen. Capcom has their hands full with the mainline games and the remakes, I'd recon.
I apparently can't see the latest entry from one of the other posters I'm having a discussion with when I'm logged in (I can see the post when I'm not logged but then I can't answer him).
But.. whatever. Gaming is over for me in less than a year I believe, the way things are going in the business. I'll continue to play the real classics (those that REALLY delivers that adrenaline rush) but nothing new, as there WILL BE NOTHING for me (still needs to work on what's left of my backlog hence the one year time period - and believe me I'll get there - only 2 games left on my Vita for example - both fighting games lol).
And frankly it's a relief as I've spent way to much time over the last 25 years playing and looking into various games/games genres, playing tons of games that wasn't really me (and studying gaming history).
I've played Nintendo, Sony, Sega, Atari and Microsoft etc. (even Sinclair Research lol) first party games. I've played everything (almost - tried almost every genre at least) from Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders in the arcades over Doom, COD, GTA, Assassins Creed to racing, RPG, point and click, hidden objects, RTS, sports games, figthing games etc. genres.
And what I've realized is that I prefer handhelds, my favorite company is CAPCOM - Resident Evil and Street Fighter are where the classics are from them imo - (fun fact: did you know CAPCOM is short for Capsule Computers and their vision/aim with their games was to make a capsule filled to the brim with fun - I believe they often succeeded in doing that), Shinji Mikami is my favorite "games developer person", Nintendo makes the best handhelds and.. THAT'S THAT!.. end of story basically.
@Poodlestargenerica Nintendo put one survival horror game out like ever (on Gamecube iirc) and never did anything with it afterwards. Nintendo is not better than Embracer (imo they actually do less daring things - it's a all about Mario, Pokemon, Zelda and not much else).
@Poodlestargenerica They own the studio which made the game, which means they financed it. They also own the Alone in the Dark IP, so sure, they are behind it. They paid the bills so they sure had their say.
The Evil Within 3 was probably never going to happen anyway. Shinji Mikami directed the first one which was really good. 2, though good too, I've peronally had my fill off after 2 playthroughs.
I can't say this bothers me much; Arkane was always overrated imo (also the French "division") and Alpha Dog I've never heard of.
I do hope Shinji Mikami has one last survival horror game left in him if some of the big players invests in his new studio (I'm thinking of Embracer specifically - it would make most sense imo).
Played a bit more of Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour "The Birth" episode and it's actually my 2nd favorite of the episodes (Lunar Apocalypse is my favorite).
The Doom series I'm done with; I played a bit more of Doom (1993) a few days ago and I couldn't do it anymore (too simplistic and old imo). The 2 latest installments and 3 never appealed to me. II and 64 I've been done with for years.
Then I have the Castlevania Advance Collection where Harmony of Dissonance is the only one I really like as the music and graphics are great. It's a bit on the easy side compared to the Classicvanias, but I'll put a few hours more into that I'd imagine and then say I've been there.
Then last but not least I have my ongoing Handheld Fighting Game Quest where I have quite a lot games I still have to look into. I'm very much a casual player, but it has surprised me how fun (and stressful I admit) many of these games really are at their core.
Sounds a bit too safe (boring?) to me; just a more powerful Switch now with a 1080p (do you really need that high definition on a handheld - my Steam Deck looks perfectly at 720/800p) screen.
And then there's the real issue: games. As a 3rd party single player games person (I don't like neither Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft's 1st party games) there seems to be released fewer and fewer of them, and those that do release doesn't really seem to bring anything new to the table.
Sure we have Elden Ring (I don't like souls-likes - been there), Hogwarts Legacy (I'm not a Harry Potter fan), Cyberpunk 2077 (I don't like CD Project Red games for various reasons), the latest Resident Evil games (since 7) has been kinda meh (solid, but no..) (and those are on Switch as cloud games except for RE4 remake), the latest DC universe (Batman etc.) game is a freaking GaaS game, Starfield is a game about exploration without exploration (as Eurogamer put it).
AND the last (relatively) stronghold of gaming imo, Resident Evil's, next installment is rumored to be open world (and probably filled with micro transactions even more than RE4 remake - yeah it had pay to win elements build very tightly into it AND quite a lot of open world elements too).
Yeah, I feel that gaming is more or less over for me personally if the trend towards open world GaaS games continues (and it seems it does - the sluicegates seems to finally have been opened full on).
As of old games I have more or less all the ones I want (Switch has been a great, great remaster/ports machine if nothing else).
Maybe if it was electromagnetism they could have a button that turned it off and on for removing and connecting the Joy Cons? But does magnetism affect electronic circuitry? I frankly don't know, but maybe it could be a problem.
Personally I've grown quite fond of Embracer the last five years or so. I've really enjoyed Darksiders III and the new Alone in the Dark game took me by surprise. The Tomb Raider Remaster collection was thankfully really well done, and I also put a lot of hours into Remnant: From the Ashes (until I realized it's a souls-like with guns and therefore too unforgiving in the long run for my liking).
I've been working on my backlog (getting to grips with gaming history really - but that's a long story) the last week, and I'm really starting to see the "bottom of the bottle". It has been a long process that I'm not quite finished with yet (but I'm really getting there).
Right now I'm playing the SNES version (Virtual Console) of Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers on my 3DS, as I've found it's much better balanced for solo play than any of the arcade versions of Street Fighter II (it has some pretty rough sound samples though - but I actually find it quite charming to a certain extent).
When The Witcher III: Wild Hunt GOTY Edition is number 11 on the UK physical chart AND 80% of the sales were on PC, you kinda know this chart is not very relevant in reality.

Day 1 for me as I've never played any of these games before.

Fundamental game play (combat) is fun and the Switch version is the remastered (PS4/Xbox One) version where you (thankfully) can turn off the QTEs.

Are Nintendo planning going 3rd party? I just don't see why'd they need to acquire a studio best known for its Warner Bros ports otherwise.

Re: Rumoured 'Hi-Fi Rush' Switch Port In Doubt As Microsoft Culls Tango Gameworks And Other Studios
@Poodlestargenerica Nintendo put one survival horror game out like ever (on Gamecube iirc) and never did anything with it afterwards. Nintendo is not better than Embracer (imo they actually do less daring things - it's a all about Mario, Pokemon, Zelda and not much else).
Re: Rumoured 'Hi-Fi Rush' Switch Port In Doubt As Microsoft Culls Tango Gameworks And Other Studios
@Poodlestargenerica They own the studio which made the game, which means they financed it. They also own the Alone in the Dark IP, so sure, they are behind it. They paid the bills so they sure had their say.
Re: Rumoured 'Hi-Fi Rush' Switch Port In Doubt As Microsoft Culls Tango Gameworks And Other Studios
@Indielink Have you played the new Alone in the Dark game? It's actually really good. Embracer's behind that.
Re: Rumoured 'Hi-Fi Rush' Switch Port In Doubt As Microsoft Culls Tango Gameworks And Other Studios
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (4th May)
I'll be continuing clearing out my backlog.
Re: Talking Point: Would You Want To Reuse Your Joy-Con On 'Switch 2'?
Gotta a Lite (and that's a keeper!) so..
Re: Rumour: 'Switch 2' Said To Be Fully Backward Compatible With A Larger, 1080p Screen
Re: Rumour: 'Switch 2' Will Reportedly Feature Magnetic Joy-Cons
Maybe if it was electromagnetism they could have a button that turned it off and on for removing and connecting the Joy Cons? But does magnetism affect electronic circuitry? I frankly don't know, but maybe it could be a problem.
Re: Embracer Group To Split Into Three Separate Companies
Personally I've grown quite fond of Embracer the last five years or so. I've really enjoyed Darksiders III and the new Alone in the Dark game took me by surprise. The Tomb Raider Remaster collection was thankfully really well done, and I also put a lot of hours into Remnant: From the Ashes (until I realized it's a souls-like with guns and therefore too unforgiving in the long run for my liking).
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (20th April)
Re: UK Charts: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Climbs The Charts To Nab Third Place
When The Witcher III: Wild Hunt GOTY Edition is number 11 on the UK physical chart AND 80% of the sales were on PC, you kinda know this chart is not very relevant in reality.
