Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 8.0.0 Is Now Live

pinta_vodki

Everyone's sharing their dreams, I guess it's like a therapy session here in the comments. With that said:

  • Never had a 3DS, so I was really looking forward to themes. Hope they add 'em.
  • I really wish they somehow separated Nintendo News Channels for different languages. Having accounts from different countries is great, but my feed is so freaking cluttered now. I love exclusive news content Japan gets, but other news are just needless duplicates. An option to exclude the Japanese channel, but still have access to it when needed would be a godsend. Little hope for it though, a really edge case.
  • A more precise activity log would be cool, but frankly I'm ok with the one we have.

P.S. I really miss the MiiMaker channel.

And oh, having no achievements is so relieving I wish they don't add them in the future. I got to a point on Steam where I would choose games from my backlog based on how good their achievement system was, and frankly that was not healthy.

Re: Soapbox: I Don't 'Get' Smash Bros. And I Just Don't Know Why

pinta_vodki

Yep, same here.

Not to be overly arrogant, but I'd say that I can "get" most games on an intellectual level after reading a review. My taste is really diverse and if someone enjoys a certain game, I probably will, too. I love Wii Music and Rocket League, Mario Party and Hollow Knight. Skyward Sword was fun.

But with Smash... "I don't get it" is honestly the only way I can describe it. Tried playing it myself, read the reviews... Nope.

I mean, it almost seems the game is selling on hype and cult status alone. Hype from the casual crowd that loves all the characters mashed together. Plus hype from the hardcore crowd that adores Sakurai and all the time he put into the game.

Maybe if you have a bunch of friends that are good at the game, that play it alone at home and then gather at a party, so that opponents constantly one-up each other. Maybe then it would be fun. But how many people have that?!

Re: Nindie Direct Shows Off Plenty Of Upcoming Indie Games On Switch

pinta_vodki

Holy moly, that was an amazing presentation. I'm interested in almost every game, except maybe for that underwater one. Lot's of new exciting stuff.

Plus, Super Crate Box and Nuclear Throne, the most amazing games that me and my friend spent well over a hundred hours playing. Those are real arcade masterpieces and I would recommend everyone to check them out. (Though Nuclear Throne is definitely easier with a mouse than a controller cause it's HARD CORE.)

Re: Nintendo Veterans Discuss What It's Like Working With Shigeru Miyamoto

pinta_vodki

I love how this small news piece turned into a bona fide discussion of Miyamoto's importance to the company!

On that note, I wonder how much of a gamer Miyamoto is himself. You could say he single-handedly created whole genres, defining the platformer with Super Mario Bros. and 3D-platformers with Super Mario 64. When he made those, he was creating, not competing. You have to be a designer first, non necessarily an avid gamer to make those. Wii had ample opportunities for this kind of thinking as well, with the motion controls allowing developers to create something wholly new.

Today, however, the variety in indie creations seemingly leaves nothing really new to create. It's up to big teams to come up with marginally new ideas an execute them perfectly (e.g. Splatoon, which is an online shooter, but unmistakably Nintendo in execution). Those games need you to be in the moment, understanding the industry and defying its expectations.

I think Miyamoto is not that person. He's a good designer, having a gut feeling for what's fun and what's not (hence his advisor role), but his time as an innovator has passed. I'd like to be wrong when he surprises us with something we've never seen before (maybe in VR?), but rationally thinking, I find it highly unlikely.

Re: Feature: What Developers Really Think Of The Nintendo Switch eShop

pinta_vodki

"It would also be great to see them make use of the 'time played' metric they are collecting for friends list so people can see the games people spend the most time playing, possibly even dividing by RRP, so you can get a feel for value per money."

This is a really great idea. I hope to be wrong, but I think we'll unfortunately never get something like this because... Nintendo.

Re: Indie Developer Says Switch's HD Rumble Is "So Easy To Use", Here's How It Works

pinta_vodki

Those who haven't should experience HD Rumble in Hollow Knight. I just adore the subtle bumps when you're landing from a jump, or a quiet whirr of sliding down a wall. Louder moments work great, too. But it's the subtle vibrations that I think HD Rumble excels at.

Honestly, I've been playing so much Hollow Knight lately that when I launch games with few rumble features, it feels as if I've turned the sound off. That tactile feel is simply that good.

Re: Guide: Every Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Controller Available Right Now

pinta_vodki

Honestly, Joy-Cons are a huge missed opportunity. Both themed paint jobs and different buttons like we saw in the concepts (SNES buttons + colours!) just after the Switch was announced would sell like hot cakes.

I'm still baffled why Nintendo doesn't use this idea to the fullest. Unless it's some production issue.

Really, though. I only really like Splatoon ones. Others are OK, but Pokemon and Smash editions seem truly bland and uninspired. Why, Nintendo, why?!

P.S. I just thought of a cool feature. Home menu themes that change appearance based on what controllers you have attached. Since Switch can already detect models/colours.

Re: Video: Nintendo Really Wants You To Buy The Wireless NES Controllers For Switch

pinta_vodki

Yeah.. no. Those were probably planned well in advance, so it's difficult to blame Nintendo, but I think they would've done so much better with a NES-themed Joy-Con with a d-pad, like we saw in the fan art after the Switch announcement. Those and concepts of other Joy-Con-like peripherals made me really excited. These do not.

The lacklustre line up of games and a high price don't help as well.

Speaking of exclusive contend for Switch Online members, I think everyone would agree rewards like Nintendo Club used to have would be awesome. I mean, even if we had to buy them with coins as well, it would feel really exclusive and membership-like. Not this single not very exciting offer.

Re: Video: Unboxing The Pokémon: Let's Go Nintendo Switch Bundle

pinta_vodki

Honestly, those Switch special bundles are a big let down. Usually I would be like "ooh, if I was buying the Switch now, I would buy THAT". And I don't get that with these bundles.

Sure, the Joy-Cons are ok. But the dock is really meh. Just googling "3DS special editions" makes me wonder why Nintendo would release such lame bundles, when they obviously know how to do beautiful stuff.

Re: Feature: Inside The Twisted And Abusive Culture Of Yasha Haddaji's Nintendo Russia

pinta_vodki

@Greator Please don't. There's scum enough in any country, and calling them "just an average Russian/French/British/Japanese/whatever" won't do any good, but just incite hatred. Peace, man.

@Equinox "Russia has a tough and rich culture of being stern as a company director." Being Russian, no, it doesn't. Some people are just a-holes. It has nothing to do with national culture, and should not be tolerated in any part of the word.

Re: Technical Infrastructure For Nintendo To Stream Games Outside Of Japan "Doesn't Exist"

pinta_vodki

I think there can and needs to be an option. Reggie intentionally exaggerates the needs of a good connection for streaming games.

So does Sony, that's why PS Now hasn't officially launched in Russia, yet I've thoroughly enjoyed completing The Last of Us, Uncharted 1-3, Beyond, Heavy Rain and more. With the closest server being about 2000 km away in Germany. "Japan only", ha-ha.

Yes, the experience is not perfect, but it doesn't have to be. It is great for experiencing a game once, and boy if I didn't enjoy those PS Now gems.

Re: Random: Japanese Auction Reveals Wii Remote Prototype For The GameCube

pinta_vodki

Nice find!

Though it's probably a not a "Wii Remote Prototype For The GameCube", but rather a "Wii Remote Prototype For The Wii Prototype". Even the finished Wii had GameCube ports, so why wouldn't a prototype?

It's obvious they would use GC ports in earlier stages, since implementing wireless would only make sense if the general motion mechanic worked out.
