@BloodNinja I didn't get to see your joke but I know from your other comments that you're a reasonable fellow.

Jokes being removed as "unconstructive" is hilarious in itself. Do they expect us to post scathing social satire every time we're inclined to make a joke? Lol. What happened to the good ol' "for the lulz".

Re: Soapbox: Playdate Sold Out In 20 Minutes - Is It Time For A New Nintendo Handheld?

pinta_vodki

The Switch sure is on the bulky side and more baggable than pocketable, yet I'm not ready to spend money on another handheld. There's so much potential for Nintendo to be creative and weird with the Switch. Some of it has come through in the form of Labo and Ring Fit, but just imagine... they could release a Joy-Con with a crank! or, as many fan concepts showed, with control layouts from older consoles, which would be perfect for NSO virtual console.

I'm sure people who whine about cardboard costing $80 would more than gladly spend it on, let's say, a single unique Joy-Con and a quirky tie-in game, Wii Play style.

Yet all we get is the sideways-charging NES controller. Because, you know, Nintendo.

Re: Soapbox: A Strange Desire For Switch Sports And A Return To Wii's Wuhu Island

@ThomasBW84 On your point of no sensor bar on the Switch, it won't be a problem at all for Sports Resort, because it is only needed for the onscreen cursor. The motion controls were all gyro on the Wii as well, weren't they. And the menu selection could easily be changed to buttons/sticks.

Besides, I may remember it wrong, but didn't Skyward Sword on the Wii also have the gyro cursor? Or was it just the sword/gadgets? I think I remember having to recalibrate the cursor.

@RadioHedgeFund Spot on. And local multiplayer was all about having fun, not being "the best" or showing off your sick combo moves. I, too, was 22 at the time I got the Wii, and for our group it was Wii Party, Mario Party, Rhythm Heaven Fever.

Wii Music (gasp!) — I loved it, and we laughed our asses of at how hilariously (and sometimes intentionally) bad we were at the game, while most being competent musicians.

And I hate the fact that despite clearly loving the Wii, the author of this article feels like he has to apologise, or at least acknowledge the perceived public opinion of Wii being unliked. Hence the "strange desire" in the title. It is not strange at all. Wii ruled.

P.S. Love your username, though I hear that RadioHedgeFund in not as good as Superfreakonomics.

Re: Soapbox: The Hidden Delights Of The Great Ace Attorney

@KateGray Have you watched Double Fine Adventure? It's an amazing documentary by 2 Player Productions about making the game that eventually became Broken Age. It was an amazing experience watching the episodes "real-time" as they came out after the Kickstarter and during eventual development, but I'd say that it should hold up really well today. It's a great dive into all aspects of making a game, from design and programming to finances and studio management; you really get a feel of what it's like for a studio to make a game. Plus it is full of Tim Schafer, who is one of the funniest people alive.

Re: Switch OLED Upgrades Reportedly Cost Nintendo "Around $10 More Per Unit"

pinta_vodki

@Razzy @Octane I'm trying to be polite here, but I don't think you understand all the pieces of how a business works. To put it short, you don't simply release a product and recoup the development costs.

It is always good to stock up on money, because:

1) The money you earn goes into making new products. How do you think Nintendo funds the development of new consoles? There's no Kickstarter for them. The margins they earn is the Kickstarter.

2) There's the cost of running the company. Even not taking the teams developing new hardware into account, there's marketing, bookkeeping, and all the other behind-the-scenes workers (I guess hundreds if not thousands of them) that need to get their salary each month.

3) There's always losses you could incur. A game doesn't do well? Virtual Boy didn't sell? It's good to have some money in your bank account to fund your next project. Otherwise SO many companies would go bankrupt after a single bad product. And I'm not speaking of the OLED Switch exclusively, the games (and ports!) contribute to this cash stock as well.

Trust me, I've worked at a company that had no cash in stock, and we lived just barely keeping afloat. It is hell. If you can stock up some money, do it.

Re: Switch OLED Upgrades Reportedly Cost Nintendo "Around $10 More Per Unit"

pinta_vodki

Do the commenters think that OLED Switch just magically appeared at factories and started making itself? Imagine thousands of work-hours that has gone into design, R&D and administrative work of Nintendo's hundreds of employees.

Not to forget that those profits fund the development of their next consoles. Unless there's a Kickstarter for Switch 2 that I haven't heard about.

Re: Nintendo Highlights "Smoother Play Experience" In The Opening Hours Of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

pinta_vodki

I'm glad those fixes are there, and they're great for newcomers. But honestly, with my Wii still working, I can't see myself spending all that money on another version. I'd rather spend it on some other game.

My golden Wii-mote & soundtrack edition is pretty good for me, so I'll probably play it on the Wii again soon, granted, I didn't finish it the first time around.

Re: Random: Did You Know EarthBound Creator Shigesato Itoi Had A Starring Role In My Neighbor Totoro?

pinta_vodki

@iuli Others have already gave you a good answer that Studio Ghibli is not just Miyazaki, but I have a slightly different take.

I wonder why you take such umbrage at Totoro being called a Studio Ghibli film, not a Miyazaki one? I think most people who'd seen it know who Miyazaki is. It's not like there's a conspiracy to erase Miyazaki from history. Is there really a problem here? I'm kinda baffled.

Re: Video: Here's How Mario Party Superstars On Switch Compares To The N64 Originals

pinta_vodki

@lighteningbolt79 Just gotta say I, too, like the NDcube games. Mario Party 9 and Wii Party are the two games me and my friends played the most at parties. We still have inside jokes based on things that happened during those games. Super Mario Party's motion controls were fun, too. I'm a bit sad this one won't have them.

And let's be frank there's one point I think people ignore when they're being too critical of these games: they are all fun when you've had a beer or two. Spending time with friends, with a game that anyone can join not matter their skill level and having a laugh is what it's all about.

It's the point that Nintendo Life itself admitted, hence the "uncut" version of Super Mario Party hands-on on the YouTube channel.

Re: Why It Took So Long To Bring The Great Ace Attorney To The West, According To The Localisation Director

pinta_vodki

The work of Ace Attorney translators always fascinated me. Will have to read the full article on Polygon later.

I just have one remark, the title here makes you think they've spent all these years translating the game, while Hsu's remark clearly indicates that she herself waited for the localisation to get green light for quite some time. Or am I missing something?
