During the Sega Fes stage show in Japan today, the new Mario & Sonic game was announced.
Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be released on the Switch in winter 2019, and an arcade version will be released the following year in 2020. You'll be able to experience all of the action in the home version with the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con.
Sega revealed it would be bringing the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to the Nintendo Switch this summer as well. Take a look at the screenshots below:
Lastly, was the announcement of Tokyo 2020 Sonic at the Olympic Games for iOS and Android devices. This will arrive at some point during 2020.

The Mario & Sonic series first started out in 2007 and 2008 on the Wii and DS. The first game was based on the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and included 20 real-life events. This followed with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games on the Wii and DS in 2009. The most recent entry in the series was Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on the Wii U and 3DS.
Are you looking forward to the next entry in the Mario & Sonic Olympic series? Tell us down below.

I could never really get into these games but people sure do seem to enjoy them. To each their own, I guess.
Joy-cons unlock the potential for this to be great.
I hope this doesnt mean we wont get a new Mario Strikers or Golf now. Still, interested to hear more about the included sports this time around
@Mallow Sega make these games, not Nintendo (or Camelot/ Next Level Games)
Thought these were over when they skipped Pyeongchang 2018. I guess because it's being based in Japan. Could be marginally better than the Wii U versions. Still wish Nintendo made these.
They're still making these? The Hell...?
@ReaderRagfish how does Tails keep up with him?
Good grief, they keep updating the page.
@Kalmaro updating it how?
Prediction: This will be the first Mario spinoff (with Mario in the name) that makes a Mario Odyssey reference in the base game.
@Baker1000 From my understanding, it was licensing issues. Something about the Sega letting the license lapse, and Ubisoft. I'm not sure whether they worked something out with Ubisoft, or whatever. But I guess they have that resolved.
@Kalmaro nevermind I reloaded the page and figured it out also I keep reading your name as Kalimario for some reason.
@Kalmaro Sorry, I was trying to sort out the formatting.
The only one of these I've played was 2008 and all I can really remember about it is my save data mysteriously disappearing.
I'm excited to see what they have in stores. hopefully something truly excited comes for this Mario & Sonic game.
I've play the one of the games on DS. and didn't like it very much. might pick up the first game on wii and see what I've been missing.
I used to play Sonic and Mario at the Winter Olympics with someone a lifetime ago. Even though it wasn't a deep game, it was fun. I'm guessing this game will be better than that ( At least I won't have to play Figure Skating again lol )
Never was a fan of these Sonic and Mario Olympic Games. I’ll probably pass on it.
@edgedino Yeah, they make little updates every now and then, usually hard to notice.
@Liam_Doolan No worries, I see now it's coming out in winter!
I'm probably one of the few who was genuinely upset at the last of a Mario/Sonic game for 2018. Can't wait to pick up the 2020 version.
Note - while the Mario/Sonic/Olympic games are hit and miss, the London and Sochi versions are fabulous game whether you are into the series or not.
If there are some cool motion controlled games in there for parties then I'd consider it. Seriously, it's Nintendo's opportunity to give us something close to Wii Sports on the Switch. They best be making sure Sega is going to make this a Wii Sports replacement in some form (which I guess the other versions were close to that). Otherwise I'll be skipping.
Given how genuinely brilliant Fitness Boxing and Mario Tennis Aces and Just Dance are for people like me who are fans of those games, I've high hopes for this game. The bar has been set high for fitness/sport games using motion control on Switch. There have been a few games that haven't met that bar but given the huge national pressure to get this one right, plus its presumably deep pot of money to spend getting it right, I expect this game will be great!
So, We will get BOTH Mario & Sonic 2020 and Tokyo Olympic 2020 on Nintendo Switch ?
Great choice.
Btw, for Boxing on Olympic, does it always in Amateur class (Wear faceguard and tanktop) ?
Hoping for Pauline and Sticks the Badger.
@Regpuppy I believe Ubi had the olympics liscense for Steep DLC.
Me and my brothers love playing these games, I'll probably get this
@ReaderRagfish all the other sonic characters and waluigi
These have always been a guilty pleasure for me. I hope they have a nice robust set of events; doesn't have to be many Dream Events, just so long as there's a lot of options.
Relatedly, Bowser doing synchronized swimming is one of the best things ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8IfARYeWu8
Didn't the Olympic committee at one point consider adding a video game event? (that, like table tennis, got a lot of complaints as a not-Olympic-worthy event)
Honestly the only letdown in this series was the 3DS version of the 2012 Olympics. Why you ask? You were forced to choose only 4 of the following characters for a certain event. Glad the Wii version did not do that.
The rest were all fun and I had a great time with them! (Except the 2016 version, because I have yet to get that one heheh.)
Enjoy waving your arms up and down to run again, this time with Joycons.
Meh, it's the FIFA and Madden of Nintendo and Sega. Kinda sad when you realize they used to make this masterpiece (which would had been nice if they still do) before the yearly Olympic milkage.
God no. I dreaded this day for a while now but here it is: the return of the lamest game series ever.
This was expected. Add online play like they did the last one and I'll buy. The series is good mutliplayer fun.
Fun too play with the wife
I had the first 2 games on the Wii and my girlfriend and I did enjoy them (she's my wife now) so pretty sure we'll be interested in this.
Also we have an almost 6 year old daughter nowadays too who would love it
How can Mario compete against Sonic at running?
@nintendolie Sonic makes like Dash from The Incredibles and deliberately limits himself.
@Sabrewing Huh, i guess i've thought the same thing. Then again, Didn't Sonic also wear a life-vest in the swimming events due... well you know. "The Labyrinth Zone incident" ?
If it's good I'll get it. I own the first 2 entries and then the series went south.
@retro_player_22
That comparison is like an insult to the game, because first, FIFA (and most EA sport games) are "annual" games, and if there is no FIFA event, they would even make a special edition and literally every new version does not have a true significant change, while the Mario & Sonic games, that although, it is also note the repetition, are not every year (if we consider that the normal version and the winter ones are different from each other, then, they are every 4 years ) and minimum really "try" to improve something, in each new version.
These sports/olympic games aren't great.
Who buys these?
Nice one. Only played a couple in this series but they were good multiplayer fun. Nicely made too, especially compared to a lot of the Wii Sports clones the Wii got. Might have a look.
@justin233 Yeah, I looked into it more. Apparently they do licensing on a per event basis and Ubisoft decided to waste the money for some DLC.
@electrogeist
Me, Any problem for that?
XD
Finally a game to look forward to, next to the limited edition of the new Bubsy game! I hope this one involves as much motion control as the very first Mario & Sonic on Wii.
@ReaderRagfish
Sonic isn't that fast
See this Game Theory.

How to ruin a Nintendo game? Get Sega to make it.
@HalBailman
We cannot say SEGA will ruin Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics before we watch the deep gameplay trailer.
Yesss, I’ve missed these. The handheld versions were terrible but this should be fun to play with friends.
@SakuraHaruka -facepalm- 😂
@Anti-Matter nothing you say is ever valid or relevant. Can you please stop?
This is cool. I would have been disappointed if we didn't get a Mario / Sonic at the Olympics in 2020 given Japan are hosting. Dammit, I may actually have to buy that one! Now if Sega can bring back Decathlete!
@electrogeist Anti-Matter's first comment on this article added his opinion to the conversation and his second comment isn't irrelevant either. If you think it is, I'd be happy for you to tell me how.
@HalBailman
Hmmm ever heard of F-zero GX
@electrogeist
Me too. It can be fun with some friends.
@SakuraHaruka
Was about to say the same thing.
So they're making one with Mario and Sonic, one with just Sonic, and one with normal humans? ...Why?
these games are usually very low quality.
@Dogorilla
Don't forget if SEGA has ever made the human version of Olympic games for PS3 & XBOX 360 (Beijing 2008, London 2012) while we got Mario & Sonic version for Wii and NDS.
Picked up 2012 when the 3DS card app was out and I had to pass by Greggs to get a streetpass. Enjoyed the game quite a bit, though didn't complete it until last year because of that level 10 medley medal. Essentially a selection of minigames. Not deep, but can be fun. I expect to be picking up 2020.
Am I looking forward to the next Mario & Sonic entry? Definitely. I loved the Wii and Wii U entries and still play them from time to time. I've been hoping for another one of these games.
@Arnold-Kage Yes, and Sega ruined F-Zero GX with poor track design, notably obstacles and off camber curves. F-Zero is a game of pure speed and holding it as best as possible through corners, not about sudden obliteration because you failed to see a post or barrier. Only half the tracks were any good. Plus, the production was so tacky in that typical Sega style.
Yeah can not wait for this to be 20 bucks in the clearance bin
@HalBailman
Weird as I seem to remember it being a hit with critics
@Arnold-Kage Critics are idiots. F-Zero is all about sustained speed, and GX failed to deliver it as well as previous games.
@HalBailman
Think I am going to disagree. Still all critics are idiots? Even the ones on here?
@Arnold-Kage Disagree all you like. I'm an F-Zero purest and I say Sega ruined it with their stupid track design. Yes, if NL critics scored it high, then they are one of the idiots.
I used to love this kind of game when I was a kid. I played Olympic Summer Games Barcelona 92 to death with a friend on the Master System. After some years I gave up on the genre. Now I'm curious to see how this game is gonna be. I think nowadays we don't need the joystick destruction that was necessary to have good results when playing this kind of game in the old days...
I used to love these button mashers when mom and dad paid for my controllers. After buying four pro controllers out of my own pocket at Christmas I am not exactly looking forward to their funeral just yet. Maybe button timing vs button mashing would be a better gameplay solution.
Now I really want to know why they skipped over Pyeongchang 2018.
@HalBailman saying that critics are idiots or that anyone with a differing opinion is an idiot, in turn, makes you come across as VERY simple-minded.
Having a different opinion to someone is, of course, fine and to be expected. All entertainment is subjective. Dismissing all critics is ridiculously idiotic as, if you look at Any game, their will be publications that scored it high and those that scored it low. The exception being if a game is undeniably good or poor quality, in which case a consensus is normally met. Do you know why this is? Its because, like anybody, critics are humans that experience and react to games differently.
Now go away and either cry some more over how your precious, precious game wasn't exactly how YOU wanted it or, and I think this is the better option, grow up.
@electrogeist as for you, you're trying too hard
@MajorasLapdog thank you. This is exactly why I hate reading comments on this website. Salty comments crying about everything. People GROW UP.
The ONLY motion controls I hate. Yes, I likes splatoon, skyward sword, etc
@MajorasLapdog Blah, blah, blah, you argumentative troll. In my opinion, critics that rated F-Zero GX really high, like better than the other versions, they don't know what makes F-Zero ticks. They are idiots. That's my opinion, it's not hate, it's not directed at anyone in particular, it's not directed in a general sense, it's solely the critical response to the game. It's actual legitimate criticism. They got it wrong.
@HalBailman giving an informed and reasonable argument against somebody isn't being a troll. I wasn't purposely provoking you for no reason, calling somebody a troll is just a cop-out response for someone who can't be bothered to accept other people are allowed to disagree with you in a public forum.
Saying they don't know what makes F-Zero tick just cements my comments. That's your OPINION and other people may find enjoyment from a product for other reasons. If you're the anomaly here, maybe consider that YOU'RE the one that doesn't understand what makes it tick.
This ire comes less from specifically your comments (though they do embody my frustration pretty well) and more from continuously hearing that 'critics are stupid, they liked X and hated Y', painting them all with one brush. However, if these people actually read around a bit, they'd find a whole gambit of different opinions and ratings from a huge variety of critics. You calling people with an opinion different to yours idiots was sort of the icing on the cake that made me think 'maybe I should step in and let this fella know that we don't all share a hive mind and that's okay'
I was quite surprised to hear about a new Mario and Sonic to be honest. I'm hoping that it's as good as the London 2012 game, that one was super fun!
I'm more interested in Tokyo 2020 with humans. Hopefully that will have a little more depth than M&S usually has. That said, if M&S improves on previous releases I'll get that as well. It's a series that has so much potential to be great but the 2 I've played previously were like cheaply made minigame collections.
I thought they were done with the Mario & Sonic Olympic games. Hopefully this one's good
@MajorasLapdog More blah, blah, blah. As I said to the other guy, it's my opinion. Writing another dopey essay won't change my mind. In fact, it only confirms you as an argumentative troll. For the last time: Sega stuffed up F-Zero, and critics that say it's the best F-Zero are idiots. End of story.
@EXP As other comments here have said, SEGA couldn't acquire the license for the 2018 Olympics, so no Mario & Sonic 2018 Olympic Games.
@retro_player_22
SEGA still makes great stuff. They just showed off footage of a new Sakura Wars game that is coming West and the upcoming Judgment looks awesome.
I do miss SEGA's arcade racing games though. They were some of the best in the business. That said, no one seems to be making AAA arcade racers anymore.
@HalBailman I think you may be beyond saving. Too stubborn or too dumb, maybe both. All the best to you, may you find a morsel of happiness in that very narrow-minded little life of yours. Maybe Sega will re-release that 16 year old game specifically tailored to you so you can finally move on with life and learn something exotic and new like social skills.
(For reference so you don't embarrass yourself again in future with misuse, that was trolling)
@sanderev I was away for a week and came back, reading some of the comments in here with fresh eyes made me wince. You think you're reading the words of a 12 year old but in actual fact they're in their 30s.
@MajorasLapdog yeah right.
I just wanta Mario & Sonic platformer lol.
@MajorasLapdog
Would suggest you stop trying to argue with him. Felt it would go badly was why I stopped replying back.
The quadrennial cross-over cash-in sports-minigame-compilation that keeps on giving!
I hope the guys have swimsuits this time.
And Tokyo, you're cool, congrats with hosting the olympics again after sixty years!
This is a surprise, they must have come to an agreement to renew the licence. The games are great for gatherings for some laughs... I enjoyed the 2016 Rio game for the Wii U.
Crowded field of games with Hyper Sports R coming as well
@BANJO loved Rio on wii u minus player one being forced to use the gamepad
@MeloMan I second that
@Kalmaro Let me guess you probably have a little brother (just like I do) who loves this game and beats you at every event, huh
I actually like the series a lot
I wasn't able to get the most recent ones so i'll be getting this game for Switch.
@MajorasLapdog You're beyond saving. You interfere in someone else's conversation with a tirade of abuse and accusations, and without any dignity, courtesy or self awareness, and refuse to accept people can have different opinions. That's classic troll behaviour and you really need to grow up.
@RetiredR @Sandro89 Don't like it, don't buy it.
@Shade_Koopa I agree, this series is fun in multiplayer.
@electrogeist You got schooled by a moderator. You need to grow up and stop.
I was really disappointed that they skipped Peongchang. I think Winter sports just make for better mini games than Summer. It's just hard to make track and field as fun as skiing and bobsled. But I'm still glad they're bringing the series back. I think they could use this to really show of the improved motion controls of the Switch. I just hope they put some real effort into it.
@HalBailman
So...
Peoples have to accept your opinion about F-Zero GX made by SEGA = Blah and called whoever disagree with your opinion = Trolls ?
🙄
Oh gosh....
Remember Mario & Sonic At The PyeongChang 2019 Winter Olympic Games?
Blame S.T.E.E.P. for why that never happened.
@Anti-Matter Sad to see you now continue with this argumentative troll behaviour. I said immediately to your reply, disagree all you like, it doesn't bother me. Obviously it must be your way. See if you can let it go.
@Zacattack99 Really? That's horrible. And the reason I say that is I was excited when I heard they were bringing Steep to the Switch, because I thought it looked really fun. Eventually, I ended up buying a PS4 and with the Switch port clearly never happening, Steep was one of the first games I bought for my PS4... And it wasn't fun at all! How do you make skiing SOOOOO BORING?!
@HalBailman
I see...
Now i know who is troll here. 🙄
@ReaderRagfish : All of the Sonic games are sped up. Games like these and Smash depict Sonic at his usual speed.
@Anti-Matter You and the other user. I made a comment, explained it, and been attacked because you can't let it go. That's typical troll behaviour, bordering on bullying. Still you can't let it go.
@ReaderRagfish Yeah, this one's a doosie! They're fighting over F-Zero in a Mario & Sonic at the Olympics article because... reasons. I don't know what it is about the F-Zero games, but it's fan base seems to be mostly tweaked out rage-aholics.
@HalBailman bravo.
@TheAwesomeBowser mind your business. 😘
@Reigestugatensho That would be puyo puyo tetris.
I just don't like the game series. Just feels like a bunch of minigames.
@Anti-Matter you’ve been a troll pretty much the whole time you’ve been a member on this site. You should leave before you get banned. No one likes a troll especially trolls like you.
@MajorasLapdog grow up; your posts are tiresome and needless.
I downloaded (sue me) one of the Wii releases last year and we had so much fun beating the cycling challenge with friends. I think we played it for three hours straight trying to beat the CPU in four player co-op.
Looking forward to this one!
@electrogeist nuff said
I will get it. this is the switch's first entry. it may be pretty good.
@BANJO
I don't know if I'm all that surprised about them bringing back this IP.
It's been around for every iteration of the olympics since 2008, even hitting the 2010 Vancouver winter olympics as well.
@electrogeist Before you read the rest of my comment, I just want you to know - I am not "on anyone's side". I don't want if to come off that I'm picking on you because I'm not.
Can you please refrain from calling users, such as @Anti-Matter trolls please? Users like Anti-Matter, from my experience, have no intention of being seen as a "troll". I can understand you don't like these types of games at all, but that doesn't mean other people can't. Myself and seemingly many other people on this site enjoy the games. If you had phrased your original comment differently, you might not have received as much negative backlash.
I just want to reiterate my first sentence. I am not on anyone's side and I don't want it to seem as if I am.
I hope you understand.
Looks like a solid 6 or 7 from the sounds of it. In other words, waiting for the deep sale long after the Tokyo games are over and everyone is pawning it on EBay. Won’t pay 60 for this.
@Matthew010 when you put it that way, I do. Well done. 🧐
@Alucard83 Troof. :3
@electrogeist LOL, that's the perfect comment.
@TheAwesomeBowser lulz. :3 ohhh you.
Well, look who's back...
