After all the rumours, curiosity and questions surrounding 'Persona 5 S', we finally have an answer as to what the thing actually is. The good news is that it is a Switch game after all, the other - different - news is that it is not a port of Persona 5.
The game's full title is Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers. Confirmed for Switch during a concert in Japan today, the game is a spin-off from the main series. Atlus has released the first trailer for the game, which you can check out below:
The Phantom Strikers is an action-RPG created alongside Koei Tecmo and Omega Force. Koei Tecmo’s Warriors-style gameplay can be seen throughout the footage posted above.
It's been confirmed for release on both Switch and PS4, although no release date has been set just yet. We'll make sure to keep an eye out for any more news as this one develops.

Stole your hope
That's a shame. I'd be keen on a Switch port of Persona 5. This, not so much.
Seriously like why keep the main series exclusive to PS, Sony doesnt own them etc. Very dissappointed
As I said on PushSquare, not quite what I was expecting... However, I am somewhat interested in this, as I did find enjoyment in Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors.
@Lizuka Playable Futaba needs to be a thing.
Awwww. Bummer...
Yeah seems Atlus wants to keep the main series exclusive to PS.
Kind of a jerk move from Atlus marketing though they knew swotch owners were expecting a port.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Eh, a bit disappointing but I'm sure it'll be a solid game. Looks like I'll be getting Persona 5 for my PS4.
That's a shame, but I also do have a PS4 so at the end of the day its whatever.
If you do have access to the PS3/PS4, like JRPGs and can get over the whole slice-of-life angle the game has then I highly recommend that game, it's really, really good.
I thought it was gonna be a puzzle game
It's a shame that P5R isn't coming to Switch. I might have bought it if it came to the Switch, but I don't know that I will buy it on the PS4.
There must be some sort of contract keeping the main game on PS5. I cannot fathom why they would allow Joker in Smash (and why Nintendo would allow it) and then bring this over but not P5R. I will admit that it would be a huge reveal and maybe Nintendo wants to announce it on their terms, but I doubt it.
I’m no businessman, but I can’t imagine that it would hurt them financially to bring the game over to the console that’s about to overtake PS4. I should stop griping though since I have a PS4 and can access the games anyway lol.
So glad it’s not a stage play.
I'm down to play it, not a fan of Persona 5 tbh. Kinda hope heroes from other Persona games join in.
OMG, no way... no way... well, ill cry playing fire emblem so..
Wait... will this be some sort of a Warriors-like game with Persona?
That is so awesome! Will keep my eye on this one for sure!
I’m just here for all the triggered comments ....
@Discipledoctor I mean Nintendo gets most of the Shin Megami games. V is slated to hit Switch from my understanding.
As someone who adores Persona 5 and warriors, I don't think I could be happier right now!
But for people who haven't played it, I'm sorry this is such a bummer
Noooooo
Oh well, if the game is good I'll buy it but still.
i'm disappointed for sure, but at least something was announced for switch. don't have a ps4 so I cant play the original game still tho
Major bummer...But better than Persona SCRABBLE, which is what I initially read the title as.
Persona V could still be coming,perhaps we just have to wait until E3 for the reveal.
Well that advertising campaign got out of control. I suspect deliberately? I'd say well played, but I'm not really interested in this game. At least Nintendo released Joker before this announcement while people were still excited, otherwise it would have been a mess.
At least it isn't actually Persona V Warriors. I actually wouldn't put it past either party. I heard there's a prophesy that the end times won't come until an underwhelming Warriors spinoff has been made for every single IP in existence. I'm personally looking forward to Burger King Warriors and Casablanca Warriors.
@ReaderRagfish I'm gonna have to agree. I mean, why call it P5S this whole time? Why save it until the end? Why not just tell people, "No it's not happening?"
I know how I sound...I'll grow back up in a few minutes, lol.
Either way, E3 is around the corner. I still have some hope there. Could be Atlus wants to bring some people down on purpose and appear to have no more announcements only for Nintendo to announce P5R or port to Switch and really kick up the interest with a "comeback" announcement in E3. With Switch almost outselling PS4 lifetime sales in Japan I think it would be a missed opportunity to not bring it to Switch.
I'm not sure this means we won't get PS5. I wouldn't be surprised if the game gets officially announced at E3.
What a bummer...that's not how marketing should operate! If this was their intention they should have made it clear, tease the fans with a title like Persona 5 S is just bad form
I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed
I am laughing so hard I am almost peeing my pants. This is just the perfect real life trolling for all the port begging.
Absolute. Perfection.
Dude! YES!! I'll just get Royal on PS4, but I LOVED Hyrule Warriors, and while I thought about getting Dynasty Warriors Xtreme Legends 8 Definitive Edition, I think I might get this instead!
...its the closest we can get to a jojo game on switch....sigh
Ergh... I love myself a Warriors game, but.... I really wanted to play Persona 5 ITSELF before getting into spinoffs... I mean, in like 4-5 months, I'll be moving in with my best friend who owns the game, but IDK...I'd still have rather played it on the Switch. :/
I'm not near completing Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition so I think I'll skip this even if it ends up looking good.
A Koei-Tecmo styled Warriors game? Bleh.
Feel bad for everyone that was anticipating a Switch version of Persona 5.
This game looks awesome. That aside, it is a shame a spin off is coming to switch and not ps5 itself, considering the core audience are those that have played persona 5 I'm sure. Its kind of like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon releasing on ps4, and not a main line title in the series.
I'd buy and play this. I will buy this. Lol Just at this point I have to decide if I'll get ps5 for my ps4 or not.
@nin10doom I'd be down for Persona Scrabble to be honest...
I was expecting a spin-off but... a Warriors game? Really? Any other genre would've been better (imo).
I've already played P5 on PS3, so I'm not that bummed. But it's a series best experienced in handheld-play, and The Royal would've made so much sense... Maybe the Switch will get the base version, who knows. At this point my hopes are in Sony pushing out a Vita successor.
More musou games... yay...
@Elithal Fans need to stop getting hyped on little to no info. This is like The World Ends With You. It was a webpage with a timer. Everyone assumed it was a new game. Everyone was mad when it wasn't what they thought. Maybe Persona 5 will come to the Switch. It's just amazing how people latched on so hard to almost no info.
@popey1980 Same
Dang it, I guess I really will have to get used to being tied to the TV again if I ever want to play through Persona 5. I barely touch my PS4 anymore these days but oh well. I can't do the Musou game thing, I don't care if it's Persona, Zelda, Fire Emblem or whatever else. Those games just bore me.
Maybe they'll decide to port Persona 5 Royal to Switch later, but that seems like more wishful thinking.
A musou game based on a game I have zero connection to is such a bland nothing announcement. Ah well.
@dkxcalibur
When do we stop hoping??? Lol
I knew we don't deserve it.
As soon as I spotted it was a Warriors game, I stopped watching.
@Timppis Is it 'port begging' or simply those of us who only own a Switch merely hoping we’d get the chance to play Persona 5? Either way, I’m glad you’re happy. Though I’m certainly not glad that there are people in this world who enjoy seeing others disappointed, but it is what it is I guess.
Hard pass sadly.
@Timppis did you really need to see that? I've been wanting this game really bad since it came out but I don't have a ps4, and this was kind of disappointing
@Roibeard64 to be honest i'm very disappointed myself but then in hindsight there's never been a core Persona game proper on nintendo consoles before.
For example i'm thinking about Dragon Quest. Well before we got a mainline Dragon Quest XI on PC, we actually got Dragon Quest Heroes 1 and 2. Many people think it's these two spin-off games "testing the waters" for Dragon Quest on PC that eventually led to XI(and in fact in terms of new spells and weapons I'm surprised by how much in XI might have it's roots in Heroes).
I'm wondering if this spin-off might be the same for Persona on Switch.
As a fan of musou games, I like it. More third party support. As an rpg fan, slightly disappointed. It's not the most desired announcement.
Kinda dumb to have a spinoff and not the original game on the system. For the Q games a lot of time has passed since the original games but this has only been shortly over a year or so, heck they are already doing an enhanced version of the original P5!
Man, ya'll need to stop believing baseless rumors. Mainline Persona is Sony exclusive. No reason that was going to change now.
Not one but two really cool Persona spinoffs coming to Nintendo consoles this year. I'm hype!
@BKPyrexx Same. What a plank.
Imagine hating making money this much. Did Konami buy them from Sega?
This is going to sell nothing outside of Japan. If they really wanted to put Persona on the Switch, at least they could have given us P5 Arena.
@Arehexes You make a great point. There's a small (willfully ignorant) part of me that wants to point to Joker being in Smash, but then we'd also have to talk about Cloud I guess lol. Still, as a few people pointed out, Atlus did make a few strange choices with naming it P5S and saving it for last. I imagine it being similar to Valve randomly posting "HL3" and then announcing Half-Life: The 3rd Remaster of Half-Life 1.
A little relieved tbh, a Switch port of P5 would be an instant rebuy and I need to stop rebuying... can safely ignore this one!
Well we got p5s which was what the rumor was about. I’ll pick it up. Also I will wait until the PS5 comes out before I get P5 The Royal. If it is gonna get ported it will be after SMT. No point in letting the lack of a port ruin a fun new game.
Thank you, but Persona 5 is in another castle.
Not what I expected, but I'd rather have this than a port of the original P5. Giving one console the old version and another the Royal one would make no sense.
@The_Pixel_King no one even dreamed of anything persona coming to switch until joker was announced for smash, and when Joker's release was found to be around the same time as some persona event in Japan, of course people were going to get excited and hopeful. I still think Persona 5 will come to switch, because of what happened with Cloud and Final Fantasy.
Told everyone a port wasn’t going to happen and got berated for it. I’m incredibly disappointed that they didn’t do a port though - they could have easily if done a port.
BOOOOO Atlus! BOOOOO!
First, Musou games bore me very quickly, so this is a hard pass for me despite how much I love P5. I so wanted to like Hyrule Warriors, but these games are just not for me. Second, this overwhelmingly disappointed reaction is what you get for being a tease. You deserve it Atlus. You should have just announced the game back in December instead of announcing its title, then doing a teaser that you'd announce more in April, and leaving your fans to stew in unrealistic speculation for four months.
Well, here's to (unrealistically) hoping that Atlus eventually ports P5R to Switch. Not holding my breath.
@Jriibz Actually they polled asking if people wanted to see it on switch so it had a lot of people speculating. They lead us on. this was no accident. they did this before. As far as us ever getting a Persona 5 remake on Switch. Most likely not. Remember all the Arena games were on 360 too but never brought P4 to the Xbox. Atlus enjoys pissing people off. It sucks. I guess I will just wait till SMTV is actually announced. I hate the Warrior gameplay.
@Ludovsky doesn't mean there never will be. Plenty of exclusives are timed only these days from 3rd parties sure we got Cuphead there which on release looked very very unlikely. Different circumstances but Sonic was thought impossible once.
If its not made by Sony i dint get why you wouldnt maximise your sales putting it up on all platforms Switch, Steam, XBox etc. Sure was on tbe ps3.
@AlternateButtons Every previous mainline persona game has been a PS exclusive, idk why you thought it would change
@Zerocritic Probably because the Console market has changed. The switch is quickly picking up and pretty soon they will have to ask themselves if they missed the money they made off of P3P and P4G. I think the exclusivity has always been a product of which console worked best for the games at the time rather than any allegiance. SMTIII was on PS2 so gotta think why wouldn't they bring it to the soon to be best selling console in Japan currently? Just a matter of time.
This is a case where I just have to not say anything because I don't have much of anything nice to say.
This is much better than the rumored vanilla port of the the original game. Also Atlus never teased the game coming to Switch lesson people should learn is never believe rumors.
Well, last shot for a Persona 5 port is at Nintendo's E3, but I highly doubt it. If it doesn't happen there, it's not happening, this generation at least.
Both cool and disappointing at the same time. On one hand, it looks pretty cool! But on the other, P5 isn’t coming to the Switch. Luckily, P5 is on sale for $20 at a store near where I live so I can still get it (but P5 on the go would have been cool).
@Zerocritic The first 6 Final Fantasies were Nintendo console exclusives. Did you not expect that to change, either? Surprise.
Point being, just because something was a certain way for a time doesn't make for a good argument. It would make a very awkward conversation about presidents given recent elections don't you think?
@AlternateButtons It absolutely is. Unless you can point to a mainline Persona game that released on something other a Sony console? Persona 1 may or may not have seen a PC port in the 90's, but that's it, and it's so obscure that I can't even find much in the way of information about it.
Atlus, for whatever reason, likes to make certain franchises exclusive to certain ecosystems. They're not going to change their release strategy for their games just because some Switch owners feel entitled to every game ever released.
Now this might be a spinoff I can get behind! It just needs to not be lacking content like the dancing games.
I'll buy it IF they have a physical version, but I really want a Persona 5 port to Switch.
@Elithal It's not like the stunt Atlus pulled with the WiiU. Where their E3 trailer implied the FE crossover was gonna pull from classic SMT. Kinda has a different tone from what you expect when compared to what came out.
https://youtu.be/OK5-EIzDtKo
Here's hoping Persona 5 will be ported to Switch, but they're saving the reveal for the next Direct. One can dream!
@Ralizah I mean you could argue Shin Megami Tensi If... would be a reason to put Persona on a Nintendo system...not counting Q which is more Etrain Odyssey clone.
Interesting, I’ll be using Queen.
@Ralizah Shin Megami called. Sorta destroys that point. Also not sure if "entitled" is as true as "hopeful".
I just want to know why the series is exclusive to Sony. It doesn't benefit Atlus. The series would sell millions more on the Switch and cross platform would make the series more popular increasing their audience for all future Atlus titles as well. Atlus is literally throwing away millions and millions of dollars. This whole PersonaS thing has even soured me on Persona5Royal. May just wait for a price drop.
There's no reason why Persona 5 couldn't be ported to Switch if other AAA games on other platforms can be. Here's hoping we might still get a surprise announcement later on down the road.
@Arehexes Very true. I didn't follow WiiU as much so didn't follow it as closely but that video definitely paints a certain picture for me.
@AlternateButtons Kinda are entitled when Nintendo systems get almost every other SMT game....
@Jriibz At this point we don't know if SMT5 is exclusive to the switch. We assume like the 3DS it will be, but until it's released we have no idea. The PS2 had a ton of SMT games. Obviously Atlus felt they would do better with smaller budgets working with the 3ds, but given the scope of SMT5 and the use of Unreal I wouldn't be surprised for it to be on the PS4/5. Personally not a fan of exclusivity. I'd rather play a game on the console of my choice.
@BKPyrexx @The_Pixel_King
We are not entitled to any given game at any given circumstance. Of course people can feel disappointed but the amount of somehow self-justified self-righteousness and wrath within the interwebs towards Atlus now is in my mind stupid and deserves not even this Musou-stuff.
I feel joy on the fact that entitlement doesn't always lead to fulfillment. It is not the same as schadenfreude in general towards people disappointed about this.
I feel like Altus just lost sales on this game before it even came out. You disappointed the people that wanted a port and in return they are not going to support this game. Atlus should’ve came out and said Persona 5 is not coming to Switch from the beginning.
People acting as if SMT is anywhere near as good as Persona lol
@Jriibz
Octopath was a timed exclusive. It’s coming to the PC this year
Hope not all the Smash Fighters Pass characters are going to be attempts to get unwanted games onto the system.
@PBandSmelly You say this ALL the time and honestly I fully agree with you. I want one so bad on Switch!!!
@ARhollow Or...hear me out, fans need to stop assuming things from barely any information and trying to read between the lines.
Not sure why people voicing their opinion they are upset about this announcement are being accused of whining and being entitled. Fans have been clamoring for P5 on Switch and I think its fairly obvious Atlus promoting PersonaS would make people think that. Its understandable to feel let down.
@VoodooTrumpet Actually I like SMT a lot more then Persona. Not a fan of the social stuff in Persona and SMT is a lot more adult oriented with choices that actually matter in the game. All with basically the same gameplay
Well, that is disappointing. If I want a Warriors-esque game, I have plenty of other options available to me on the Switch.
Well, dang...
There was me hoping that Persona 5 was coming to the Switch, but we're getting ANOTHER Musou/Dynasty Warriors crossover... I personally never got into the Musou games, though currently I'm guessing Hyrule Warriors a chance as I got the WiiU game dirt cheap. But here's hoping that Shin Megami Tensei V might get gameplay trailer soon, and it'll be more like a classic JRPG.
It's not surprising that it wasn't Persona 5 for Switch, considering the fact that mainline Persona titles have traditionally never left PlayStation consoles since the very beginning, but DAMN I feel really bad for those who were specifically holding out on buying a PS4, Persona 5 or P5 Royal just to see if Persona 5 would actually come to Switch. I assume Persona's PS exclusivity is to compensate for mainline SMT games being Nintendo exclusive (which are just as good btw). I'm not surprised or disappointed that this wasn't P5 Switch like everyone wanted, but it's still cool to see content outside of Joker in Smash coming to the system otherwise.
However, for anyone who wants to get into mainline Persona after seeing Joker in Smash, PlayStation seems to be the only place to play those games for now, and probably for the foreseeable future.
@AlternateButtons Because you never hear port begging for the other games in this franchise. To be fair Persona 5 has nothing to do with this article...
@KoopaTrooper Because people saw 3 letters and creamed their pants assuming Persona 5 was coming to Switch. Now they are mad a thing isn't happening before some kind of a formal announcement.
Really should stop with the "exclusive" aspect of Atlus. Here's a list of consoles supported for SMT:
Platform(s)
Android, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Gear, iOS, Microsoft Windows, MSX, NES, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, PC Engine, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Vita, Sega CD, Sega Saturn, SNES, Virtual Boy, Wii, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Xbox 360
Granted some never made it out of Japan, but still.
A New game from Atlus with day 1 release on Switch is better news than another rehashed PlayStation game I already played 2 years ago (or can buy today for $19) on my PS4
Not my type of game - but Art style looks good as usual.
And this is the problem with RUMORS! People are getting upset over a game that was never even PROMISED! Scramble looks like a really fun game, but people have been so suckered by the rumours that sites like Nintendo Life really push that they're treating these rumours like they're cancelled game announcements!
"But Joker is in Smash!" Yeah? So are Solid Snake (Metal Gear hasn't been on a Nintendo platform since Gamecube), Richter (where's Rondo of Blood?), Little Mac (there hasn't been a new Punch Out in two generations), Lucas and Ness (Mother is a dead franchise that hasn't seen a new release in over fifteen years), Pac Man, etc.
How about this: instead of whining about a game that was never once promised, or even hinted at, by Atlus we look at this from the perspective of "yay, Switch gets another fun-looking, well-made game in it's ever-growing library!" It certainly beats being bitter about it, all because of a series of stupid rumours.
I'm afraid this is going to become the norm as games get bigger and more complicated forcing devs to make lesser versions, etc. for the Switch. I hadn't bought PS5 yet and this game does look fun, but I know Switch fans wanted the main series ported. I think this has always been a tale of Nintendo fans, getting lesser ports or not getting the game at all. Really wish Nintendo would just go 3rd party and make their great games for every platform so this wouldn't happen every generation.
@Arehexes
We don’t need another useless hack and slash game. The Switch has plenty of those. PS5 would’ve been more successful on the Switch
@KoopaTrooper arguing that SMT has more choices? Huh?
The mainline SMT series is Persona stripped off practically anything outside the battle system. There's a reason why the Persona series massively outsells Strange Journey & SMTIV and has it's own spin-off games, anime, merchandise, etc.
@DeathByLasagna Well at this point you should probably hold out and wait for P5 Royal
It seems a lot denser in content and visually looks more vibrant considering P5's limitations to also being a PS3 title.
@Roibeard64 nods other thoughts I had at the same time is that Persona 5 The Royal is slated only for 2020. So in hindsight that may leave a fair stretch of time to later confirm a Switch port of it as well in a later surprise announcement.
It's a bit of a stretch but then again it wouldn't make much sense to announce a port of the "standard" edition of Persona 5 when an "enhanced" edition has just got announced for other consoles.
But I could see Nintendo later announcing a nintendo-published edition of The Royal at E3(or a similar later event that could be run parallel to a major Direct), considering the precedents with dragon quest games published by Square Enix on other consoles that are however published by Nintendo themselves on nintendo consoles.
@BanjoPickles Let people feel what they wanna feel. Whatever floats their boats. I think it's just a reflection of hope and hype that births some negativity.
Also, 3DS Metal Gear Solid. Cough.
@Elithal Well when talking spin-offs, then yes SMT is not exactly exclusive to just Nintendo. Same with Persona considering the Arena titles also showed up on Xbox 360 and BlazBlue CTB showed on Switch and PC. However, when referring to SMT being Nintendo exclusive, it's mostly in reference to the mainline games
@ARhollow Yeah because there are a crap load of JRPGs on Switch...
@VoodooTrumpet It is. It's just that people tend to gravitate towards Persona's lighter tone and more vibrant aesthetics than SMT's gritty and realistic atmosphere. In terms of gameplay they're actually pretty similar
@Elithal
There hasn't been anything aside from a port of a decade old game since the remake of MGS1.
And sorry, but I'm going to call out childish entitlement as I see it. People can feel however they want, but I/others will react accordingly. Once again, gamers were promised NOTHING and they're mad at Atlus? Why?
@Elithal His point was everyone is mad cause of rumors they hyped up. This isn't something like Sony pretending Kill Zone trailers was in game footage.
I'll apologize, but as someone who actually likes Musou games, this is absolutely, gloriously hilarious to me.
Atlus is from bizzaro land here not only do they not do the obvious thing after getting the Smash honors they expect PS4 players to pay full price again rather being DLC.
This was a missed oportunity, switch has a lot of Warriors style games but not enough big rpg's .
Where in the world is SMT 5?
Wow. So we're getting Persona 5 Warriors for the Switch and no Persona 5? That's just cruel.
I mean the Persona Q spin-offs on the 3DS were one thing but this...
Just, why?
@BlueBlur101 I would definitely agree except for some, except a lot of the earlier ones came to iOS/Android in some form. Plus, Nocturne (arguably the greatest one) came to PS2.
Lame announcement and I disagree with people that say the faults is on everyone's expectations. Although is partly right, it should be also said that atlus hyped this just to deliverer something that the majority of people liking JRPGs will never want to play (hack n slash gallour...).
I will wait for a port or not... Their bad on not having one more sale
@BanjoPickles I definitely get it. Just making my point that Snake does have a pretty good point for being in Smash, or so I feel.
Cool that one of my favorite games are expanding to more things, but...another Warriors game? No thank you. I've had enough of those.
@Elithal And Nocturn is exclusive to PS2. You are conflating 1st/2nd party company to exclusive games on a system.
All these Warriors type of games look and play the same. Like they just replace the character models. Like those old licensed 2D platformers on the Gameboy and SNES that all played the same.
@Ludovsky id be happy if that happened though atlus is very slow with translations. I played all previoua ones on my Vita so im just conditioned to play them portably just a preference ive developed really.
@MsJubilee Sadly I think it will be a long time before we hear about SMT5 again.
@Elithal I'd argue Kojima just likes gimmicks so the 3DS excited him to port it lol. That and didn't Kojima beg to put Snake in Smash since Melee?.
@RevampedSpider i'm kind of hoping it's at least more like Dragon Quest Heroes which at least ditched the "defend the base" gameplay to put more focus on "a lone party of heroes fighting against hordes of monsters by themselves on a variety of missions" that even introduced an Overworld-lite in Heroes 2 in a continuing blend of RPG and Musou gameplay. And that's not getting into the leveling system, rpg-like weapons and armor management(even recycling the actual stats systems of Dragon Quest) and actual spellcasting mechanics even covering traditional dragon quest buff/debuff spells rather than just pure damage dealing spells.
Like the only complaint I had about Heroes 2 is I feel they could have taken it a bit further by introducing more than a single hub settlement but in Persona's modern day setting that might be less of an issue.
In a way, i'm tentatively curious because the nature of the Persona franchise is such we might indeed see something more like another Dragon Quest Heroes 2 rather than another Hyrule Warriors(and I can't help but wonder if we might see an attempt to mimic the gameplay of collecting and equipping personas).
So it's a spinoff to a spinoff series which itself already had another spinoff series? Man this series really needs to stop spinning. Got tired of Musou games this gen that I actually don't care about the ones we don't get anymore (Dragon Quest Heroes I & II), for those who are a fan of both rejoice.
@Arehexes No I agree. Just destroying the whole "Nintendo = SMT" argument.
@Elithal When was the last time an SMT game went to a Sony console since they switched to Nintendo?
@AlternateButtons I never said Sony was enforcing exclusivity. I said it's Sony exclusive. In that these games only release on Sony consoles. You're right. It is "Atlus being weird." And Atlus has behaved weirdly quite consistently for more than a decade.
Anyway, it was unrealistic to expect Persona 5 to come to Switch, considering this series has been exclusive to Sony consoles forever. Atlus never said they were sending a mainline Persona game to the Switch. That expectation was a result of the entitlement mentality a lot of Switch owners have (don't get mad at me: I have it too, to some extent, and get annoyed when certain games don't come to the Switch; I'm still waiting for the Disney Afternoon Collection) and a culture of rumor-mongering that has built up around the console's playerbase. Combine those two things, and you get hundreds of thousands of people expecting a port that was never going to happen.
Atlus most definitely did not mislead people. "Leakers" misled people.
@MsJubilee This is the way it was with Persona 5 as well. They announced it, and then dropped off the face of the Earth for years until they were basically ready to fully reveal it. Same is likely going to happen with SMT V.
If people want Persona 5 then buy a console that will play it. Simples.
Anybody who says that there wasn't a mislead with the Joker Smash release and the timing of this announcement along with the P5S name is just lying. I'm not going to cry about it, but they clearly did a bit of a bait and switch here.
@VoodooTrumpet For me any SMT is 100 times better than any Persona. Its a taste matter, like everything on life.
@Elithal When people say SMT they normally mean the Shin Megami Tensei line of games. Which outside of Nocturn being the only one not on Nintendo. Of course SMT1/2 were ported to hell and back. But it's kinda tied as a Nintendo game in the grand scheme of things. Final Fantasy VII is the same way, it's talked about like it's a PlayStation game dispite it being on PC arouns the same time it came out originally on the PS1.
Why I'll agree Atlus didn't mislead people it is frustrating when Atlus and other developers can't just come out and squash these kind of rumors. They always are overly vague or even cryptic.
Obviously given the huge success of the Switch they get hammered with Switch port requests and then they tease Persona5S. Can they really be that naive to not understand what fans would make from that?
I don't see anyone's post here acting mad or entitled. There is a difference between hoping something is going to happen and feeling disappointed and acting entitled.
If it's just Persona 5 Warriors, then count me out. I was never a fan of Dynasty Warriors.
Why not port something interesting like Knights in the Nightmare, Atlus?
This is a no-buy for me. Warriors games are too repetitive.
No buy on P5R for PS4 either, I'm sure it will be great but the reason I never finished P5 the first time around is the lack of portability. I only beat P4Golden because it was on Vita. Releasing an updated version on the same console just seems redundant to me.
Disappointed doesn't begin to describe it, thanks a lot, Atlas.
Meh, does not appeal to me. Looks like another Hyrule Warriors type game. Not a fan.
Also, no love for Xbox? Poor Xbox. They probably can't wait for this generation to end.
@Arehexes Do you blame them? Joker released in Smash and there were no other games besides Q2 that joker showed up in. A lot of people and "insiders" believed Persona 5 was coming, and instead of Atlus shutting down the rumors, they capitalized on the hype. I'm not mad but extremely disappointed considering its another warriors musou type game.
Persona5 dynasty warriors edition lul!
Funny how this dude joker is in smash with dam there every move in the game and doesn’t have its main game on switch.
@KoopaTrooper Agreed! Probably biggest gripe with this is Atlus getting free hype for a supposed port they refused to outright say was false.
Well whould have loved a persona 5 port, but this is a good addition as wel, happy with this
@Ralizah You specifically said: "Atlus, for whatever reason, likes to make certain franchises exclusive to certain ecosystems."
Again, SMT3 (Which, surprisingly, is only 1 mainline entry before the 3DS's SMT4) plus many non-Persona ports. No further argument.
@Arehexes I definitely think we're on the same page, lol. It just seems weird having to scream "NOCTURNE + PORTS AS BAD AS FF7" every time somebody pulls the whole exclusivity route with SMT. Makes me wonder if I'm the only one that remembers or if I'm insane.
Hmm. I may look into this game. Kinda surprised by this one.
In relation to P5R, I was about 70/30, it was going to be announced for the Switch at this event. Since Joker is on Smash Bros, this event didn't make sense to announce a port of a title. Since P5R was revealed with a trailer and not an event.
The Switch is getting ready to eclipse PS4 sales in Japan. I'm pretty sure Atlus is going to bring Persona to the Switch at some point, but it isn't today. Since P5 is such a big game in this generation, I would imagine Nintendo and Atlus could be discussing a better time to reveal it. Remember, Final Fantasy VII, IX, X and XII were announced in a highlight reel on a September Nintendo Direct... no one saw it coming.
In short, just relax. Do we know if P5R is coming to the Switch? Rumor suggest it may be coming, but until it hasn't be confirmed... nor recently denied either.
Disappointment intensifies
@KoopaTrooper It is exclusive to Switch tho. At least that was the understanding at the time when the trailer dropped a few years back.
Some of you are understandably upset. However, at the root of it...Atlus didn't promise a platform when announcing either of these games. The community took what they teased and ran with it. The community created the hype with little info. How are Atlus misleading folks. Again...most of you are upset and are in your feelings about it. We still got a Persona game. Not the one you hoped for, but still got one. SMT is still a thing. Here's hoping to a mainline Persona game hitting a Nintendo console in the future. I'll take this game tho. It looks great.
More reskinned dynasty warriors, yuck.
@KoopaTrooper
But what if they have something to announce at a future date? Maybe they're not ready to make an announcement, or squash rumours. I'm sure that there are business considerations beyond "let's lead the consumer along by a string."
People need to understand that converting a game from PS3/PS4 to Switch isn't a simple drag and drop. They would have to do it from the ground up. These things do take time. I look at it like "if it comes, great" but if it doesn't? Well, I have Dragon Quest 11S to look forward to, along with the upcoming Wolfenstein Youngblood, Doom Eternal, Saint's Row the Third, the recently released ports of Final Fantasy VII, IX, X, X2, and the upcoming XII, Civilization VI, Diablo III, Dark Souls Remastered, Cuphead, Hellblade, etc.
And those who are saying that Atlus baited people along because they put an "S" at the end of the title? That's just.....ridiculous! LOL!
@VoodooTrumpet Wow its almost as if people can have different tastes and opinions in games
@AlternateButtons I have to agree with you on many points you've made but to be fair the S might have just been related to the project name before the official name came out. I think our wishful thinking pushed it. I do agree the S and possiblyJoker may have been misleading. Why not W for Warriors or K or Koei or something, lol.
Well that was a funny plot twist
I actually liked the looks of the game, for a bit I thought it would be a totally different 3rd person adventure, then I saw the K T logo so we kinda know what to expect, but hey, maybe it can be nice
@Lthoise Yes I do blame them, people read too much into rumors and sites like this writing about them for clicks. If Atlus had put a teaser where it looked like Persona 5 was coming and we got this I would understand it.
Hell I remember Atlus annouced a Persona game coming to 3DS...guess what it was Persona Q
@Arehexes Lmao, oh the truth...
I'm thrilled this is coming to Switch and will definitely be picking it up.
Of course we all want Persona 5, and who knows if that'll happen. I think they're fools not to, cause it's a good game and people would buy it.
But if they dont like money, then screw em. I've got other games to play. P5 isnt the end all be all. It's a single drop in the endless bucket of great games. Final Fantasy X is a better game. Go play that instead. Xenoblade 2 is equally good. Go play that instead. Final Fantasy XII is equally good- go play that instead. There are plenty of great games just as good from companies who actually value your money.
I don't understand why this exists but I'll gladly play it.
As nice as it would have been to see Persona 5 on Switch for those that wanted to play it, I was never going to get around to it, anyway. I don’t have the time to sink into massive RPGs like that.
I thought it was a puzzle game based off name alone. I might give this a shot!
I love Hyrule Warriors, so this definitely on my radar.
@JaxonH Sqaure values our money, hence why they pulled a EA with FFX on the Switch in the states...
@Arehexes
This game looks garbage and you know it. You don’t want to admit it because you’re a Atlus fanboy. Persona 5 is a better choice for the Switch. Personally I don’t care because I have a PlayStation 4 but I feel for the people that didn’t play it
This interests me way more than the actual Persona game people thought we were getting - see if they can throw previous games' characters in there. I honestly liked the cast of characters a lot more than the actual gameplay.
no playable futaba ever though, if you let futaba be playable can you really call it P5?
@AlternateButtons Persona games have always released exclusively on Sony consoles, and they don't do multiplat releases for their mainline games. That has been their behavior for more than a decade. If that's not Playstation-brand exclusivity to you, then I don't know what to tell you.
Anyway, as I said, they never hyped up a port of Persona 5 for the Switch. Atlus did nothing whatsoever to mislead Nintendo fans. Nintendo fans, AGAIN, fell for another rumor, and projected their impossible wishes onto Atlus. That's not their fault. It's yours. Stop believing bad reporting and baseless rumors.
@Elithal I did. And my point stands. Sony hasn't gotten a mainline SMT game since they went to Nintendo, have they? I never said "SMT is permanently married to Nintendo." But, right now, SMT is exclusive to Nintendo, and Persona is exclusive to Sony. And, unless their release philosophy changes, those games won't be going multiplat.
@ARhollow ...Yep I'm a fan boy, that's why I don't like Persona 4 or 5 and thought 2 is the best. That if I was a Atlus fanboy wouldn't I be mad Persona 5 isn't on Switch? I am a fan boy, hence why I think Persona Q is dull. I am hyper critical of SMTIV, but I'm a Atlus fan boy because people let themselves get hyped.
Is that your only come back to me pointing put the Switch has a crap ton of JRPGs on it?
I’m ok with this. I do love musou games (I assume), even though FE Warrior is the only one on my switch so far. I'll be keeping my eyes on this.
I’m pretty neutral on the port situation since I had no expectation of the release even when Joker was announced and I had no prior interest in the series. It would be cool if it happens one day but I know my hype and interest wouldn’t be passionate as some fans here. Doesn't help that my interest in turn-based RPG have been on the decline as of late.
@Ralizah That's pretty weak selective reasoning based on timeline considering only 1 main entry ago it was on PS2, but alright. I'll give you that.
@ARHollow That sounds like you did your research on Fanboyism. Glad to know you're the judge and jury on that.
@Arehexes
If they "pulled an EA" theyd simply not release anything at all.
Not shelling out for a 32gb cart in the west is actually par for the course for EVERY publisher, as not one single company, not even Nintendo, has done so in the States.
Thankfully, Nintendo made the console region free, Square Enix provided an English Asian version on a 32gb cart, and everyone is happy. Thank you SE. Thank you Nintendo. Not that most people care anyways, as sales of Mortal kombat XI have CLEARLY demonstrated
@Elithal If I was a fanboy wouldn't I be mad Persona 5 isn't coming to Switch...oh no wait I traded my copy of P5 in cause it wasn't that great...
Ugh no thank you. These games are the equivalent of a sitcom Christmas special.
@JaxonH I shouldn't have to import a game to not avoid that practice. Glad to know you are easy to please to jump through hoops.
@Arehexes Lol, considering you've been reasonable and good about voicing your point about Persona rumors not being justified...YOURE OBVIOUSLY A FANBOY GET OUT
@Elithal It's not selective reasoning at all. SMT switched to PS2 that gen, then back to Nintendo afterward. Did we ever see Nocturne on Nintendo consoles? My point stands.
@AlternateButtons "Playstation-brand exclusivity" means just that. It doesn't imply that Sony is enforcing exclusivity, just that, because of their release philosophy, these games are exclusive to Sony's Playstation brand.
That's not a contradiction, it's just a really basic distinction that you seem to be struggling with.
I doubt Persona is contractually married to Sony. It's just how Atlus rolls. They could change in the future, but past behavior is always the best predictor of future behavior, so I see that as pretty unlikely.
@Arehexes
What difference does it make? It's literally the same number of digital button presses on an iPad to order from Play-Asia or Amazon JP as it is to order from Amazon US.
So no, I'm not easy to please. Theres just nothing to be upset about. I listened to people riot for 5 long years in the Wii U era over region locking. Wtf is the point of that if you're not gonna take advantage once you have it?
Like complaining you have to grab a cup with your left hand instead of your right, then getting smug with anyone who dares to point out the obvious fact it's no extra work or hassle. Sounds to me like you just want to be upset, despite an obvious and equally easy solution staring you in the face.
@Ralizah YOUR statement "Atlus, for whatever reason, likes to make certain franchises exclusive to certain ecosystems" does not stand unless you edited that comment :/. Yes, otherwise I agree with you.
Sorry. This has no point lol. Too much time on debate team.
@Elithal Yeeeeeep I am a fan boy, because I'm not butt hurt over unfounded hype. Glad to know your resorted to the lol fanboy come back...
Even though I called out Atlus for putting out a trailer that was nothing like the end product.
Sweet! I wasn't going to trudge through P5 again anyway, this is much more appealing for people who have already played the original. However, I do feel bad for P5 not being on switch for people that haven't played it before. Sony must have some type of exclusive deal with atlus.
@JaxonH I, shouldn't, have, too, import.
@Arehexes I hope you realize I used sarcasm lol. You're obviously not a fanboy and I don't really believe in the term.
Okay, I am honest here, with Joker arriving in Smash I really hoped for Persona 5 hitting the Switch. I am not interested in a Mousou game in the slightest, so I am going to pass on that. Luckily there are other games I am also interested in and I can devote my time and money towards those titles.
To those that get a kick out of this game / genre, please enjoy.
@Elithal Sarcasm is hard to tell online >>
Edit: The caps was the give away lol
@ARhollow console exclusive* It will release on PC and mobile but wont be on any other console except switch
@Arehexes xD I was poking fun at ARHollow immediately calling you fanboy despite how reasonable you were about your points.
@Elithal
So let me get this straight. He’s on a website that only talks about Nintendo and he’s criticizing Nintendo players that are disappointed about Persona 5 not coming to the Switch. Sounds like a Atlus fanboy to me
@Arehexes
That's like saying you shouldn't have to buy a game to play it.
It's a privilege to be able to get a game on a full 32gb cart for no extra cost. You're lucky to even have that opportunity cause most developers wont even give you the chance.
You should be thanking them for allowing you to import. They could've given you the middle finger, done like every other developer and not make ANY version on. a 32gb cart. At least then your complaint might have some ground to stand on
Switch fans riot in six... five... four...
With my oft-discussed reasons to view a portable Persona 5 as a matter of time, there's not much to say except "better luck next time/event/Direct/you name it". As for the game in question, it sounds pretty cool to have an SMT musou, although I'm surprised they're focusing on one game rather than at least the whole Persona subfranchise. How many playable characters will there be? Then again, we're talking Koei "read that DLC list ten times fast" Tecmo, so this impression may well be premature. Still neck-deep in FEW, I won't be itching for another musou anytime soon anyway, so let time tell its tale. Same with P5 itself - I'm still at the end of Revelations (with an alternative plotline that apparently requires a separate playthrough from scratch), so I might be lucky to get to Joker & Co before G10 in any scenario. XD
But if we're about to discuss Port Begging anyway, there's a Persona-esque game I wouldn't have to franchise binge my way towards, and one nobody can possibly think up any "PlayStation exclusivity deal" conspiracy about. Just saying.
@Roibeard64 Why is SMT V only going to be on Switch?
Eh, I think exclusives even if third party help give a system an identity.
I do find it odd that Joker being in Smash is essentially an advertisement for a Sony exclusive.
I like musou, I’m down
I actually have hope for this, I was worried this was another Persona fighting game which I would have avoided at all costs.
Damn. I was looking forward to Persona 5 on Switch but instead we get another game in my least favourite genre. I personally find these games so dumb and brainless but each to their own.
@Trajan "why is SMT V only on Switch?" Ask Atlus its not my call. A guess maybe lack of demand by other platform owners. Im not arguing it should be.
@ARhollow Because I did callout Atlus in this tread for a misleading E3 teaser about a Fire Emblem cross SMT game. How it looked like the mainline series's tone was gonna be used. Which we never got. While explaining people hyped themselves on rumors and speculation.
@JaxonH You are telling me to be thankful to have to jump through hoops to play a old game with out the game pass scheme?
@ARhollow It's just my personal opinion but most people that have REASONABLY voiced that some people on Nintendo's side that fell for the rumors are a bit entitled are people I agree with. I personally want Switch to get P5 and think Atlus derped a bit naming the project "P5S" after a Joker Smash update but I have to admit that is only my fault. I think Arehexus is reasonably saying "shouldn't have fell for the rumors." Especially since Atlus mixes up messaging sometimes. If he was truly an Atlus fanboy, wouldn't he want ALL Atlus games to be on all platforms to see their greatness? That seems more fanboyish to me, and probably the good kind tbh.
@Timppis I totally agree with you. I should also state that I personally have never felt entitled to P5, or any other game, on Switch. It just would’ve been really, really cool
@ARHollow Correct me if I'm wrong but maybe the term you were trying to use was "elitist" which I could understand from your perspective lol. I personally agree with Hex though.
@Arehexes
"Jump through hoops"
What hoops? Ordering from Amazon JP is no different than ordering from Amazon US. So again I ask, what hoops? You tell me. What "hoops" are you jumping through ordering from this Amazon (Amazon.co.jp) instead of this Amazon (Amazon.com)
Humor me.
@BlueBlur101 Will probably do so!
We first heard of P5S after P5R. Atlus wouldn't do two different enhanced remasters at round about the same time, and if it were just a plain P5 port, it wouldn't get a different name, so when viewed with a sober mind, it was always clear that P5S would be a spin-off, but yet another Musou game of all things? It's as if there were no more Japanese developers outside Koei-Tecmo to work with on an action game. Gimme a Persona May Cry, for instance.
That said, while Atlus/Sega were under no obligation to quell any rumors, once the hype train got going, it would've been sound of mind to prevent the reveal from inevitably blowing up in their face.
@JaxonH Mainly my bank's fault but I can't order from there lol. Had to make a JP Nintendo account and do a few workarounds to import.
@twincast Ohhhhh I agree. Destroy the hype trains QUICK so angry customers won't scream for boycotting.
@JaxonH Not hoops per se, but shipping cost is a needless additional expense for games that see an international release.
Well I have never played a Persona game anyway, so I don't miss what I've never played.
@twincast
The exchange rate negates the shipping though thanks to strong dollar and weak yen, if you're in the US (as he is).
@Elithal
That's odd, and likely outside the norm. Using a credit card not issued through your bank should clear fine. Or simply tell your bank not to restrict your purchases. So many games I import that's something I'd resolve immediately.
Sweet I was just thinking the Switch needed another Dynasty Warriors style spin-off of a much, much better game.
This is seriously disappointing for me, I really don't like the Dynasty Warriors series but hope this at least will make others happy.
@JaxonH I think you're right. The message I got seemed to come from AmazonJP but it's probably something dumb that's an easy fix. Still got to get Disgaea 5 several months early!
They must really not want Persona 5 on Switch.
@JaxonH Costs more, my bank has thrown fits over it, shipping can take forever. I import a lot of music from Japan with stuff taking forever to get here. One CD took so long I thought it was a lost cause and bought it digitally. I had to go through a thurd party shipper in the past cause of site rules involving importing.
Also depending on the game dlc is region locked.
@JaxonH Looking at your comment history you where certain Persona 5 was coming to switch... Guess its a pipedream.
( i also want it on switch >> guess i get the ps4 version>>> persona 4 golden reminded me why portable is better).
Disappointed that P5 is not hitting switch it would have been a repurchase for me for switch, but I am interested in a dynasty warriors like persona game because I loved hyrule warriors and really love persona 5. I'm guessing they'll also have other characters from persona as playables too.
@Ralizah It's going to be worse than Persona 5 cause this is the first HD SMT entry. Expect news in 2021 and the release in 2023.
@Sanquine
???
I still think its coming, at some point. Who can be 100% sure though? I dont think it's a pipe dream. In fact this game only serves to indicate Atlus is increasingly aware of demand.
Question is, why are you concerned with what I think, or thought, digging through comment history? I already have the game, already played the game (part of it anyways, kinda lost interest half ways through due to not being able to play on the go- tried the laggy Vita remote play, couldn't keep that up long term). Yes I thought it was coming (and still do, though maybe less sure now). But... I dont get it. Are you trying to rub in the fact it wasn't announced or...? I'm just not following your intent on responding here
Still pretty cool regardless. (And who knows they might pull a sneaky Switch version for Persona 5 R heheh).
@ReaderRagfish sounds really accurate actually, especially given the S moniker. Idk Atlus missed a huge opportunity, willing to bet persona 5 even the base game would’ve outsold the PS4 version.
Atlus WHY NO SMTV?
@MsJubilee Why do you think there are problems? Last I've heard, they're "hard at work," and we can expect news "at a later date." Unless you're referring to the recent interview where they talked about the "challenges" associated with developing for the Nintendo Switch, in which case I wouldn't read much into that.
I actually think we'll get it sooner than Persona 5, because I think they're going to build off a lot of that game's groundwork for SMT V. Specifically in terms of the 3D models for various demons. There's a massive overlap between demons and personae, and they already have full 3D models for most of the demons that will be in the game. I imagine that'll save a ton of time right there.
I think we'll get a full reveal next year at the very latest.
@Discipledoctor It's for marketing. Nintendo isn't competing with Sony. Sakurai really likes P5, and Nintendo was down with trying to get some PS4 people to buy a Switch (which many have).
Switch isn't over taking the PS4. It has 1/3 the sales, and PS5 comes out in 2 years. Most people own a Switch as a secondary console to PC/Xbox/PlayStation.
@Arehexes I hear about U.S. banks being beyotches about international purchases so often, it utterly blows my mind.
Anyway, I don't import as much as I used to, but taking all cost factors (base price, S&H, exchange rates, taxes/tariffs) into consideration li'l ol' European me, too, ends up paying more than for local releases - and that's with affordable shipping, which can take months. Thankfully I've never cared about playing ASAP.
@WebHead I'm boycotting for that reason. Bait and switch
@The_Pixel_King
I agree that it would have been cool. More good games on Switch is more good games for more people to play.
@Elithal
I don’t care who you agree with lol. I’m just giving you my point of view
@twincast I've had my bank put a hold on my card a lot when going to cons. Even recently buying a digital book and paying a water bill had a hold on it.
@Arehexes
Shouldn't cost more if you're ordering from Amazon JP. Exchange rate nullifies the $8 shipping. In fact I routinely get games for less by importing than had I purchased in the US, or same cost.
If a bank is giving issues, tell them to lift restrictions on your card... or just use a different card. I've got half a dozen different cards and not a single one has ever given me issues.
As someone who's been importing for years, it typically takes 2 weeks for the cheap shipping. Especially from Amazon JP. They are world class with their shipping. And, once you have the game, you have it forever. Gonna wait that time anyways. Can either have a game you want at the end of 2 weeks, or not have a game you want at the end of 2 weeks. Either way you're gonna wait that 2 weeks.
Of course, you can always just use Play-Asia and pay in dollars. Sure, its $10 more. But it's on a 32gb cart, and no hassles or bank issues. Nobody else has used such large carts, so one way or another you're either gonna download, or pay the extra (or sort out whatever bank issues you have and live the rest of your life happily importing whenever you want at no extra cost).
I am super glad I was able to obtain my favorite game of all time, and its sequel, on a 32gb Switch cart. It was as easy as 6 button clicks, and if that's not the case for you, I'd resolve that asap. Too many games you'll miss out on otherwise (Okami HD, World of Final Fantasy, Chocobos Dungeon, FFX/X-2, Ace Attorney Trilogy, Onimusa Warlords, etc)
Or, say who cares and just buy digitally or buy the NA version. The game plays the same either way. Idk. Life's too short to get hung up on "I shouldn't have to". I just wanna play games. And I'm a simple man- I want game on 32gb cart- I see game on 32gb cart- I buy game on 32gb cart. Region free is the best thing to happen this gen. I hope you're able to sort out whatever issues you have with it.
@ARhollow Thanks for giving me your unasked point of view. And I told you how you were wrong in either definition or call-out. Weird how that works huh?
"If a bank is giving issues, tell them to lift restrictions on your card... or just use a different card. I've got half a dozen different cards and not a single one has ever given me issues."
"Of course, you can always just use Play-Asia and pay in dollars. Sure, its $10 more"
"Gonna wait that time anyways. Can either have a game you want at the end of 2 weeks, or not have a game you want at the end of 2 weeks. Either way you're gonna wait that 2 weeks."
These sounds like hoops to me...
Also I like how you are ok with a 2 week wait then say.
"Life's too short to get hung up on "I shouldn't have to". I just wanna play games. "
So why even import, just get everything off the eshop.
@Timppis thanks for explaining that. before you had made it sound like anyone who wanted persona 5 on switch was some terrible person who acts like a child. It's true that Atlus has been getting a lot of undeserved hate for sure. Also I love Atlus and the stuff they make, always have. and this new game does look cool
Well, I'm disappointed
Can't say it's because my hype was based on something, but I still think they miss something by not releasing it on Switch
@Elithal
Cool story.
@LightBeam
Yeah they missed millions of dollars lol
@Arehexes
Well, they're not hoops. Buying from PlayAsia is not a "hoop". Its as easy as 1-2-3. Whether it's worth the extra $5 or $10 is up to each person, but theres no "hoops"
And there's no hoops for the majority of people who import. Just seem to be a list of "things people say they heard from others to make it seem like it's as much of a hassle as possible". Most people who import dont have any issues with any banks. And even if they did, most people have alternate credit cards to use. To statistical likelihood every CC you own has issues, is about the same as martians invading.
And waiting for a game to arrive in the mail is also not a hoop. You wait for ANY game to arrive in the mail. It may take an extra week, but again, not a hoop. That week is gonna pass no matter what. You're "jumping that hoop" no matter what. You either wait the week for nothing in return, or wait the week for something in return. Either way, unless you can stop time, you're gonna wait that week regardless.
And absolutely I'm ok with a 2 week wait. I have other games to play in the meantime (over 100 physical Switch games). But, for the record, I buy digitally also. I bought FFX/X-2 digitally while I waited on the physical version. But even if I didn't, that doesn't make my statement contradictory. I can play 100 other games until game #101 arrives
Ah man I was hoping for Mario Warriors, Donkey Kong Warriors, Mega Man Warriors, Minecraft Warriors or even Hybrid Heaven Warrios but instead we get Persona 5 Warriors.
Meh!
@BKPyrexx
No worries it was a stupid thing to laugh at anyway. Atlus makes great games and I hope that they hit it out of the park with Re Fantasy Project. (Hoping it'll come to Switch as well of course)
@JaxonH Everything I listed was stuff I went through dude. Also waiting TWO weeks for a game is a hoop. Compared to now via digital is now or just a go at a physical store. Even Amazon US would be faster. So yes that is a hoop, just because you are used to it.
But what ever I import from all over the world and stuff I listed was hassles I dealt with. If it isn't for you, good for you. But to act like it's a list of things people says a lot about you. Again glad you are ok jumping to hoops then just saying wtf Square.
Well that is disappointing. Was really looking forward to playing P5, but alas! I have a PS4, but hardly ever touch it due to my current lifestyle. Switch would've been ideal.
Big time bummer. Especially seeing as the gameplay looks like a Dynasty warriors game, which I am not a fan of in the slightest. (Be it hyrule, fire emblem, or otherwise)
A brawler doesn't sound interesting at all.
Well, that's a bummer...
The biggest bit of irony with all of this is that Joker being in smash has actually kept me from buying Persona 5. I keep holding out hope that Persona 5 will come to switch, which would give me more time to play the game due to the nature of the console. I'll continue to hold out a bit of hope, but I'm playing other things on my PS4 and whereas I would have bought it by now if not for smash, now I'm ok with it being on the way-backburner.
I'm terribly upset. I haven't had the chance to play P5, as I don't own the console. I was really hoping for a port. They're missing out on a huge market. I personally can't justify purchasing a Ps4 for one game, no matter how fantastic it is, and a port would have been perfect for me. I'm sure many other people are in the same boat. Shame.
@Arehexes
glad you are ok jumping to hoops then just saying wtf Square
You're thick, ya? There are no hoops for me. I'm sorry you have to deal with issues I dont. I make 6 clicks, game is ordered. Boom, bam, done. I'm enjoying my game on my 32gb cart. Apologies if that's so out of reach for you. It's not for me.
Why in heaven's name would I say "wtf Square" and not buy what I want, when it's so easy I can do it in less than 60 seconds flat?
"Go to a physical store"
That, that is a hoop. Having it delivered on a silver platter, two weeks from now or not, is living like a king
@JaxonH Not to butt in but FF X/X2 is on full cart in Japan? Welp I may be importing now...
Need some eshop cards for golden week anyway....
EDIT: looks like it is the Asia version.
I had stopped playing Persona 5 on my PS3 to wait and see what happens.
I’m a bit disappointed, but I’ll be getting this and Persona Q2. The irony is that with little tv time to myself I’ll probably finish the spin offs first as they are on handheld
@Discipledoctor Don't forget Persona Q2 on 3DS, which also features Joker.
Warriors games are best played if you already have nostalgia and attachement to characters of the said series. For instance Hyrule Warriors is fan service for Zelda fans who have already played the games and have wanted to play as more characters than just Link.
Persona 5 not coming to Switch before the Warriors game is a bit of a mistake imo.
Oh well sad day I can always boot up RPCS3
@Ryu_Niiyama
No, please do. This hasn't exactly been a fruitful conversation anyways.
Japan and Asia, yes.
Only difference is the cover art. Japan has the classic white, Asia looks like the NA version. Both have English and Japanese, and put both games on a 32gb cart without any updates needed. v1.0
@AlternateButtons I don't know if this makes a difference for you, but the base P5 was released on both PS4 and PS3. So if you have a PS3, you can still experience the original game. (It's how I've currently been playing it.)
Yeah, this came out of nowhere. This sounds fun though, after play Hyrule and FE Warriors, I think the Warriors games are pretty fun. A Persona themed one sounds cool too.
As for mainline Persona, yeah I feel like Atlus is leaving money on the table with not having P5R on Switch.. They put P4G on a much, much less successful handheld. I just feel they need to end this weird exclusive stuff and just have SMT and Persona on both platforms.
I need to make a new profanity to promote my disdain for it not being P5.
That being said, this game is nowhere near going to strike as much a chord with fans of the series alone, let alone on the Switch.
Just cause Joker is Smash doesn't equate that his face will sell everything you plaster it on, Atlus. It only works for Mario and Pikachu.
@Royalblues - I get what you're saying, and I do have a PS4 (so ultimately no loss for me). However, that's saying a preference shouldn't be had, that's a dangerous way of thinking.
I could definitely get Royal with no fault or hoops as a consumer right now. But honestly... I think I would have an easier time accessing it and desiring to play it when it's on my Switch. Hell, ever since I got the damb system I just been gaming a lot more now, of course my desire would be to have whatever I can on it.
@popey1980 I don't really use guns in Persona. No triggers here
@Royalblues
Yes, but the Switch has changed the experience of gaming, and playing a big, 100+ hr rpg glued to a particular spot is claustrophobic. Not only that, but I'm a working adult, and can only bend my life so far toward entertainment. Some games only work when they are portable, and you can squeeze in time whenever and wherever. Nothing against PS4, but Atlus will only get my money (and I guess I only get to experience P5) if they bring it to Switch. And trust me. I really, really want to play P5.
@Royalblues
Lol. It's not.
Very strange decision to release a spin off to a game that's on PS4. I'm still not convinced we aren't getting Persona 5. I have a PS4 so I already played P5, but I may have been willing to go at it again.
Just to rub it in a bit, PS4 not only gets this game and the vanilla Persona 5, but also Persona 5: Royal.
@The_Pixel_King then maybe don't only own a switch. The series has been exclusive to sony since its start. Be more open minded and save up for a console that can play these games you want to play.
@MarinaKat Exactly. If you want to play a game buy the system for it. It's simple.
Let’s get some Shin Megami Tensei V news then. Or how ‘bout a Persona collection announcement at E3? Or both. I’m not necessarily disappointed, I do have a PS4 in my living room and my game room, so I suppose P5R is still an option.
@JaxonH cool thank you for the confirmation! Will pick that up when I get my yen eshop cards. I love golden week sales.
So my question is how many people are going to boycott if Switch gets the Royal in like 2021?
This is the best outcome of all the persona S speculations. I love this type of games.
At least some Persona 5 on switch. Yes please
@Royalblues - Dangerous way of thinking is that it can lead to thinking no conflicting personal preference of another would suggest your preference is the most right, or correct one. We've had flame wars over generations of consoles because of that thinking.
The dangerous part of it is that it can permeate to other aspects of one's life. If my favorite restaurant opened up closer to me but only offered strictly vegetarian options, sure I can just go to the older place if I want something meaty, but the preference is still there to want to go to the other, closer venue. Your statement is essentially saying that I shouldn't have that opinion cause if you really liked food, you'd take that extra time over and over again without tears.
That's what you're statement suggests; You're better cause you have all access to venues and you simply "love games." All the while diminishing one who would want it on Switch to be an inferior fan cause they simply don't put it all out there.
Which is only galvanized by your entire dismissal and how "no one owes you anything," response. Placing that those with preferred options are entitled and wrong. Something that's oft too familiar with how discussions on the internet has become.
As I stated, I have the PS4, so if I want it that badly I would get it there. But that doesn't stop me from favoring the idea that it should be on the Switch. And that preference doesn't make me anti-Sony, or a fanboy, or entitled, or just wrong. But your statements have been pretty implicit how you feel about these types of people.
This looks fun!
I'll be getting this on PS4.
@Royalblues I feel like I am being wooshed here. I agree that having all consoles is the ideal solution (only real thing I am missing is a good gaming pc), but not everyone is as fortunate to be able to do this, so it is far from the best solution. It doesn't seem very funny to the poor people who miss out as a result of not being able to pick and choose. That said, I am looking forward to P5R.
@Paraka
That was a fine comment.
I have a PS4. Most here do. It's not about playing the game, its about playing on a system conducive to my lifestyle, with a version of the game that offers me the freedom to enjoy where and when I want. After experiencing Switch these past few years, it makes playing games elsewhere feel restrictive and... even antiquated.
It doesnt mean there's anything objectively wrong with enjoying the game on PS4, but for me, and you, and undoubtedly countless others, we want to enjoy the game on Switch. I just can't commit to playing games while restricted anymore. I'll gladly buy the game again for Switch, but I'm not going to drop another $60 on the same game on the same system just because they slap Royal on the box with some bonus content.
That said, worst case scenario I'm stuck playing on the TV for one single game I like. It's not the end of the world. There's alot of other games out there, and I really have no intention of revisiting Persona 5 unless they bring it to Switch. So... they can do whatever.
I don't even play the Zelda or Fire Emblem version of this garbage. Why would I play Persona 5 scramble? I was hoping to get to know the actual RPG game and see Tokyo. So disappointing.
Never felt so let down yet so excited at the same time.
On one hand, this looks cool. On the other, was hoping to get to play Persona 5 but I guess I'll need a PS4 for that. Oh well, still need to play Persona 3 and 4 anyways. I'm of the camp the main series is staying with Sony because I do not think this would make nearly as much money as a Persona 5 port would, which leaves me scratching my head.
I looks really cool so im excited, but also disappointed its not just Persona 5 Switch. Maybe one day?
I still think Persona 5 will eventually come to Switch. If not, this would be the first ever Persona game to not have a portable re-release.
290 comments,Wow people are fired up today!
I would have preferred Persona 5R or the original Persona 5 but still looks good, gonna pre-order it anyways.
@The_Pixel_King lol who doesn't have a PS4?
Next Warriors themed game: Castlevania.
ANOTHER Warriors game on Switch. Because... Koei Techmo wanted that. Only them.
Pass. Between Fire Emblem Warriors, Hyrule Warriors and the Fate (totally not warriors) Extella games, I already have way more warriors content on Switch than I need.
I'll just have to dust off my blue ray player... I mean my PS4.
@HumanDog
Anyone with an adult job who can own a PC?
I heard a while back that Persona 5 The Royal was going to remain a PS4 exclusive so this doesn't surprise me at all.
Looks like Atlus will forever remain a platform exclusive developer for their biggest titles - Persona on PlayStation, Shin Megami Tensei on Nintendo, random spin-offs on any or multiple platforms.
You misspelled Atlus as "Atlas" in the last sentence of the second paragraph.
Guess I’ll never play a mainline Persona game then.
@Jriibz Except for Shin Megami Tensei III which is also Playstation exclusive
Persona 5 will be announced at the next Nintendo Direct (before E3). Just wait and see.
Back in 2017:
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/01/persona_5_will_not_be_coming_to_the_switch
@R_Champ if you have an decent job, you own at least a PS4, Switch and PC. And still save at least $1000 a month.
Too many exclusives on the PS4 not to own it. Although you could play Persona 5 on a PS3 emulator on your pc
@eternalcube lol, why do you have to choose? Still fanboying as an adult
Yet another musou re-skin? Surely the world doesn't need any more of these games.
@PK_Willow
Persona 5 was part funded by Sony but these type of deals can expire after a while. I suspect it will come to the Switch before long, and it will be an easy port as the game was designed for the PS3. (and the PS4 version is near identical)
And AGAIN we Nintendo players get a alternative instead of the real deal...
Not that I was hyped about Persona 5, but it is supposed to be one of the finest jrpg's from recent years. I might have tried it out because of that praise, but now it won't happen.
Who the hell buys these warriors games? Doesn't it get boring no matter what franchise you slap on it!? I'm confused.
Scramble looks pretty cool, but not putting P5 on Switch seems like a missed opportunity for Atlus because, you know, money...
And they’ve still not worked up the nerve to post the trailer on their Facebook page. I wonder why... 🤔
Seeing how I spent 290+ hours on Hyrule Warriors, I’m pretty excited for P5Scramble. I never got around to playing the original P5, so it’s a no brainer to pick up P5R whenever it launches next year.
@Elithal Oh really? I wasn't even aware they got mobile ports. And yes I am aware of Nocturne on PS2
@Roibeard64 i keep seeing the sony memes with persona 5 with "only on PlayStation" photo shopped on, which is funny because my copy lacks any exclusivity.
plus this SMT exclusivity is BS otherwise Nocturne would've been on game cube.
and to the people who dont get why a switch port is possible is due to vita dying and the success of P3P and P4Golden dont abandon portable gamers, we keep pokemon selling 10s of millions.
@Discipledoctor theres no "only on PlayStation" on the case.
therefore its timed if anything.
@HSuzumiyaVI extactly with Vita all but buried theres a market for portables on Switch even if on Nintendo platforms for 1st time.
@Dodger implying joker in smash is for a warriors game.
@Roibeard64 and persona on portables sell crazy
the issue is that PlayStation fan base are moving away from RPGs and onto switch.
that and possible censorship.
i was getting tired of idiots on the web getting facts wrong or have limited experience in portable gaming.
so i thought id settle the score and set the record straight.
i own persona 5 and ps4pro and vita remote play is no alternative to playing persona natively on vita/switch especially in Australia land of bad internet connections.
Persona 5 on switch would have sales potential of the portable crowd (id double dip to be able to play it on the go like, rarely play it on the TV on my ps4 too many intertruptions i find) , persona fans that lack a ps4 but have switch (probably less numbers there) and also nintendo fans that might have never played it historcially might give it a go on the back of Smash.
@Roibeard64 i should never have had to come back from the dead but the console warring is absolutely cancerous and should be returned to sensible levels
not everywhere should be like 4 chan tier trolling.
@ramu-chan thanks for the clarification. the fact that previous games were on handhelds gives me a little hope
I don't mind playing this version of Persona 5 and it looks pretty good.
@Royalblues - You're still making out preference equates to allegiance and your choices (and in turn, flexible finances) are the only way to go, those without are wrong because that preference to invest in a solitary console, be it preference of choice or chance. A gamer is more likely to buy it on their preferred console than to reinvest in another cause it's "the only right way."
And you spun the restaurant metaphor to suit this ideology. Cause you make it out that it's a new store all together, I never said that. It's the same franchise, just sans my favorite burger. Sure, if I want burger bad enough I will go to the old place. But that doesn't stop the preference of the closer one being more appealing to me if they had that item. I would likely go more often simply cause of its ease.
And that's where the whole Switch preference is from. Many opted for a Switch cause of the ease of access and other conveniences they saw in it. It's not on their own fault that they feel they're likely to buy more games for it over another system due to other external influences. This, as your responses show, you think is foolish, or fanatic, and that those who do not exercise the same practice just don't enjoy games. And somehow you equate that to my statement as the dangerous part.
Ultimately, you're saying my preference makes my opinion and love for games less than yours. My opinion, is less then your opinion... That is where I said was dangerous.
What's so hard about bringing Persona 5 to Switch? It's what people want not some spin off. I don't even like the Dynasty Warrior series.
Atlus, lets speak when youactually start listening to your customers.
@HSuzumiyaVI pokemon selling a lot does not mean anything. Other jrpgs on portables don't sell anywhere near the amount pokemon does. Smt is exclusive to nintendo now. Are you really pretending the 3ds ports and Smt 4 and 5 don't only exist on nintendo platforms as of now?
As for the Only on Playstation box. It's completely irrelevant now if you consider PC as part of the competition between the consoles. Detroit is no longer only on ps4 yet the boxes had that phrase.
Koei Tecmo seems to put more effort into these Dynasty Warriors crossovers than they do with Dynasty Warriors itself.
Seriously, go compare Hyrule Warriors, Fire Emblem Warriors, and this game to Dynasty Warriors 9.
This comments section aged like milk
They were hiding so much in this trailer it was actually a really bad representation for what the game actually is
