During today's Nintendo Direct it was revealed that the 1993 Game Boy Zelda entry Link's Awakening is getting the remaster treatment, and it's coming to Switch later this year.
Regarded by many as one of the best instalments in the entire Zelda series, Link's Awakening sees the famous Hero of Time marooned on a strange island and is heavily inspired by the equally beloved SNES entry, Link to the Past. Nintendo is recreating the entire game in 3D, but it will retain the unique side-scrolling stages of the Game Boy original.

Didn't expect this bombshell to drop day one purchase definitely
Yessssss!!! I can’t wait
Of course my 2nd least favorite is the one that gets remade... at least the art style is really adorable.
It’s gorgeous
Give it to me NOW!
That has to be the best art style yet!
I adore how this games looks, really brilliant direct and 2019 looks awesome as a Nintendo fan
The art style is too adorable for words. I can’t wait to play this!
I never finished Link's Awakening and didn't really get into it so I'm not that excited for this but I do like the art style.
I don't think anyone saw this coming. Pleasantly surprised.
Ehhh... I guess this could work. Seems like they're just doing a straight-up remake and not a reimagined sequel like A Link Between Worlds.
YESsssss! gimme gimme
Pretty sure this is the big game Ninty we’re referring too. I’m really looking forward to it, but on the whole the Direct was lacking. Better then E3 2018, but worse then March and September 2018
SO FREAKING EXCITED!!! this looks fantastic, I didnt play the original but am a massive Zelda fan so for me this is a brand new Zelda game experience. Happy happy.
Mind BLOWN!!!!!
I love you Nintendo.
Sooooo excited
Zelda games aren't really my thing but even I'm excited for this one
This will so cannibalise the Game Boy sales.
@Fiyaball completed DX back in the day and as far as I can remember I wasnt that keen either. Thought it was windwaker for a minute when I see link out on the open ocean and got exited.
What the hell was up with the Goomba/Chain Chomp?
That came out of nowhere. Very cool, a very superb Zelda Game. Not digging the cutesy look of link though.
The animated intro scene was awesome
Then came the in-game graphics . . . 😒
@TheFanatic yeah I was disappointed too. No snes and no metroid did it for me.
So happy Nintendo is showing this classic some love. This was the first Zelda game I owed and completed as a kid.
So many wonderful memories and I do look forward to what they can add to make this game better than it is.
I'm not a fan of its ascetic though I must admit. It looks kinda baron and basic graphically.
Still though this is an awesome surprise
My jaw dropped when they showed this. Yay
This news has awakened my link.
Going from that opening into the gameplay was jarring, not digging the looks
My first ever Zelda game back when I first had a game boy amazing all these years on its a no brainer looks like a day one to me 🙏🙂👍
The person responsible for the art style should be fired. How dare they ruin the best Zelda with that horrible art style?
One of my favourite Zelda games, this was the best announcement from the Direct for me.
I’m excited but I don’t like the art style. Why do they have t make link like a wind up doll? It looks like a mobile game. Also, this was in development for 3ds but they moved it to switch.
I literally got goosebumps watching this live
I hope it has an option to switch between remastered sound and game boy style sound. I almost didn't recognize any melody just and I finished this game probably 20 times...
When I saw the artwork at the start I was worried this was going to look like some crappy Photoshop 2D style, but the actual game looks very cool imo.
This brings sooooo many fond memories of my childhood
Day one!! Awesome game!!
Man, the art style caught me off guard at first, but its definitely the best way to translate the topdown Zelda formula to HD. Couldn't be more excited!
I can't, I just can't.

I'm too emotional to really process this.
Links Awakening is my favorite game of all time, and this is news I can barely handle.
Day one for me!
@tillyboo
He's the village guard dog ^_^
This game is tougher than it looks! The level designs are amazing, great choice for a remake!
Oh. My. Goodness.
This game looks GORGEOUS.
I can’t believe how good they made it look!
I do recall hearing rumours that a 2D Legend of Zelda game was under development, but I certainly didn't anticipate this. I confess that I am disappointed that it is not a new title, but I am sure the game will still be fun nevertheless.
@tillyboo There's a lot of crossover between the Mario and Zelda series (they're both created by the same guy, if you didn't know). A Link to the Past has Chain Chomps, and I believe some of the other 2D ones have Cheep Cheeps. But they take it up to 11 in this one.
I loved every single announcement, this year is going to be huge for Switch owners, throw in the fact that they didn't even show games like AC, Bayonnetta 3 and Luigis Mansion 3 but they're still coming this year is amazing, what a freaking lineup
Never played the original, so I'm excited to see just how great Link's Awakening truly is.
There is gonna be a lot of people who hate that art style
Nice to see them remaster this grey-and-black game, though I’ve never understood why anyone belives this is the best game in the series. (Wouldn’t crack my top 5 Zelda-games.)
Looks amazing !!
Now we know why Nintendo were so quick to dismiss the Skyward Sword rumours, guess that'll get its turn next year perhaps haha
This looks pretty awesome I gotta say. Go Nintendo
This is actually my favourite game in the series, I even did the secret ending back in the day. TBH I stopped playing the series, I just couldn't get into the games past Majora's Mask. I really love that they are remaking it but come on this art style is bland.
Link looks like a doll and the game seems like a generic ftp game. I hope it improves.
@garfreek Why are there Mario elements in a Zelda game though?
I never played the original (for shame).
I'm not keen on the art style either tbh but I'll still end up buying it!
Yeah, I can die now.
This is my favourite Zelda game, quite possibly favourite game of all time.
So many feels here. I'm excited for the title, and think the art and music style just works right for it!
I love the art style they chose to use for it, it makes the world feel fun but not "cheap" as I was fearing could happen with new 2D Zeldas. I hope they use that animated opening style more in the game though for cutscenes and whatnot because it is gorgeous.
Wonderful news! Love the original, this looks great!
@BongoBongo123 I couldn't put my finger on it but "wind up doll" describes it perfectly. I was really excited until I saw the actual gameplay - it really doesn't look right to me and Link doesn't seem to move that fast.
I KNEW IT THE MINUTE I SAW THE STORMY SEA IN THE VIDEO!! Cannot wait to play this. Actually hyped to hell about this game
@tillyboo They were in the original game
Best thing in the Direct. Links awakening was the first Zelda i played. To hyped for this..
Finally an actual Legend of Zelda game on the Switch and it looks fantastic.
My first Zelda game! Yaaaay!
Oh hell yes! and better yet, NO TOON LINK!
WOO HOO!
Looks solid, will probably pick this up on release date. Torn on graphics, but I know the gameplay won't fail.
Wow that is one packed summer. Def getting Zelda. Initially not sure of the art style but I’m sure I’ll get used to it and the game is superb anyway. Hoping for Metroid trilogy for end of year now.
@Kidfunkadelic83 Metroid just got started from scratch and everything was pitched. Not sure why you expected it.
@Sinton A reason is that, from the games I played, it is one of the very few in the Zelda series that has actual plot and not the generic and boring save the princess thing.
Awesome, this is one I'm happy about but I didn't see the Direct. Where's my Metroid Prime trilogy??? No one has mentioned it yet and not seeing any stories on it.
This months direct was actually really good! Really looking forward to this! Looks really good
@belmont Same goes for the Oracle games. Maybe they'll remake those as well, since they were very similar.
Meh, another port of a game that's already readily available. At least it isn't a brand new game this time. Unless it has a ton of new content, I'll probably give this one a miss.
Looks beautiful. Exactly what a Gameboy remake should look like. Day 1 for sure.
@BradC40 No Metroid Prime Trilogy was announced, sorry.
Oh Baby!!! Cant wait for this.
@Euler Remake*
Really didn't like the look of it at first but after watching the trailer several times think I'm starting to like the idea. Link does seem to walk a bit slowly though and that bothers me - but then once you get the trusty pegasus boots it would be less of a problem.
Something tells me I'm going to prefer the GBC version though because of childhood memories.
A game that literally came out before a lot of NL users were born.
I was already really happy with the Direct and then THIS! 😊 As soon as the raft was revealed in the waves I knew EXACTLY what was coming! Proper chills! This was my first Zelda game and to this day remains my favourite Zelda game, if not one of my favourite videogames, so I cannot wait to get a hold of this!!!
@sanderev Yes I 'd very much want to play the Oracle games again!
This announcement was pure meh for me it was out before I was born, therefore although I am a huge zelda fan I struggle to enjoy the side scrolling zelda games
@sanderev Tomaydo, Tomahto.
How did they not call this "Link's Reawakening"?
I had no idea what this is - my kid told me as soon as he saw the egg - but it looks like Link and Nintendo waving bye-bye to the 3DS.
I've never played Link's Awakening but I felt a major feeling of nostalgia from the trailer. Definitely a day one pick up.
P.S. I think Link looks AMAZING!!
Was the owl in the original game? I want to say yes but can’t exactly remember.
Not bad. Hopefully they make it look a bit more similar to A Link Between Worlds and we are all set 😉
@BongoBongo123 yes. Very important to the plot actually
Upon seeing those waves, I leapt of my seat... I nearly cried when I realised I guessed correctly... a masterpiece re-imagined! Loving the art style!
Was very excited to see this announcement, but then was pretty disappointed with the visual and audio style. Not sure if I am interested in purchasing this one..
Also really nice to have a genuine surprise in the current climate of leaks and data miners spoiling every reveal! Well played!
I've been wanting this for so long!
This is the main Zelda game I played when this game out on VC on 3DS. I loved it.
@Shinnos
This game has been rumoured for the 3ds for the last two years. But I understand it didn’t fully leak.
@JaxonH You see it all? Watched it with my kid, was thinking you must be very excited with nearly all of that. My kid was super excited about slopes, Day 1, I'm just waiting on the Yoshi demo, game is day1.
It was a good Direct, I'm just getting too old. Astral Chain looks good. Sinalefa should be happy, haven't had contact with him in like a year.
One of the Zelda games I owned. But never finished. Defitnetly an unexpected surprise.
And that art style. Nintendo certainly knows how to take it next level. Its gorgeous. Reminds me of playing with a detailed toy set
@faint metroid trilogy.
I’m crying. I really am
The only down is the 60$ price tag. I'll give in though.
Art style is adorable. But I have Link's Awakening DX on cartridge, so I'm probably skipping the remake.
This looks adorable! Though I do hope this isn't full retail price. I mean back on the game boy it wouldn't have even been as much as a console game. If it is full retail Switch game price I might have to wait until it goes on sale. It looks super adorable though and I loved the original gameboy game.
I never beat it on gameboy. Got stuck and didnt have internet back then. Super excited for this
I love that this already has 100+ comments and we heard the announcement like 30 minutes ago. XD
YYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know its just a remake, but it looks really sweet. But yeah, it also looks and sounds very light. Like a parody or something like the new Yoshi (wich I am still gonna buy by the way).
Well, it looks nice and its nice to see a new artsyle. I am hoping though that they will expand the game (bigger dungeons, more dungeons, new mechanics and new items). But we'll wait and see!
Idk, I prefer Zelda 2 to LA so I'm not sure.
@Altron440 has the price been confirmed?
My favorite Zelda game, woo! Mario Maker 2 was more than enough, but this was the icing on the cake.
I got proper excited when I saw Link at sea, I shouted out "Windwaker" lol but still I'm excited to relive my nostalgia
I like this remake and def a day 1 purchase. I was hoping for a Zelda 2 remake since that game is also 2D..that would have been great but that’s just wishful thinking...where is MP trilogy tho Nintendo? Got me out here like a fiend scratching his neck for the next high
I played this for the first time a couple years ago. If it’s the exact same stages, I’m going to skip. But if you haven’t played it, it’s probably worth it. Hopefully it’s not 59.99.
there is no title right now to go with it, like hd or 3d. do you think it could be a package of the older games. awakening is a small game. I could see seasons, ages getting put into a package or link to the past since it's all the same incarnation of link
My first thought is that I'm not crazy about the art style, but hopefully it will grow on me. As long as it plays well, this should be great.
Smiling from ear to ear . Seriously I cant stop watching the trailer. So glad gameplay was shown. Can't wait for a release date
I was 6 years old when this game came out. 6... I played this game sooooo much. I literally cried a little at this trailer.
I love the art style too. This game took wacky risks when it came out then, and it is again with the graphics. My heart is happy. So happy.
Man, Rune Factory 5 isn't getting any love anywhere
The chibi artstyle isn't really my thing and the game really is lacking in terms of impact or whatever.
But I may be checking it out at some point still, never played through the original.
Preorder is already up on best buy
Wow, my poor wallet oh well 😀
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought the release date for Dragon Quest XI was going to be my favorite thing in this direct, boy was I wrong. I did not expect a remake of Links Awakening. Best direct ever!
Will be buying this ,but need to get used to this artstyle
Yes please. Cannot wait.
I just expect 60$ if its first party switch so no big surprise. But I'm sure it will be worth it.
I hope that this game is also a good sign for the Oracle games.
Oh, i hoped till the end, that it will visit 3ds also (((
Time to go back to Koholint. I'm so happy this game is FINALLY getting a remake. It is my 2nd favourite 2D Zelda game. Hurry it up 2019, I want to play it now.
Not really sold on the art style but I am so excited for this.
Hope they make Link run a bit quick. It's a bit slow compared to A Link Between Worlds 😅
The opening gave me the impression that the game would be hand-drawn...until I saw the chibis.
@SamusLv7 There is an item for that in the game.
I wonder if it'll be one of those remakes where you can freely switch between old assets and new ones! From the looks of how it seems to control I think it could happen!
@Altron440 I’m hoping Best Buy just listed 59.99. No way that game with new paint can be that price.
@belmont I’d say that the plot in most Zelda games are «save the world», not «save the princess», and in that regard, this game is no different.
All the people freaking out about Mario enemies are gonna be in for a shock when Kirby shows up...
I almost cried.
Looks amazing. I never played the original. Day one methinks...and yet another game nobody really saw coming.
@Sinton You most certainly not "save the world" in Link's Awakening... Quite the opposite actually.
I wouldn't put it past Nintendo lol.
very happy about this!
Well that was unexpected. Whilst the art style looks nice I was kinda hoping for something closer to the opening movie. The dot-eye look has never been my favourite.
Who am I kidding, I will buy this Day 1.
This game looks absolutely smashing!Day One!
I can't wait. I really love this game.
Best 2D Zelda, IMO
If this does well, I hope to see the Oracle games get a similar treatment.
@mazzel great idea!! I personally like the new style as I hadn’t played the original but to have the option would be nice. Also on trend
I like the art style, but that dungeon room with the miniboss feels REALLY cramped.
@Trikeboy I know of the Pegasus Shoes, but its normal movement is still a bit slow compared to A Link Between Worlds. I am not hating on the game by the way. I am planning on buying it.
@zip Art style is superb.
An awesome game... That I already own and not liking the graphics
: / From the intro I was hoping they'd done something special like Ubisoft's 2D artistic visuals or even pixel art like Octopath Traveler...
I'd have preferred a 3D re-imagining than a remake.
Looks good though.
Looks amazing, i'm so excited for all the happy Zelda fans!
THIS WAS THE GAME I MOST WANTED REMASTERED!!!!!!!!!! I somehow missed this as a kid. Wow. It would be impossible to be more excited!
@BradC40 I'd say that Metroid Prime Trilogy is being reserved for E3 2019. But in all seriousness, you can still get it on the Wii U eShop, and as long as THAT exists, you can get it. But GOOD LUCK getting the Wii Remote Plus and a Nunchuk Controller.
@BongoBongo123 The Owl was in the Original Game. I still have it on the 3DS. And spoilers, the Owl acts as an extension of the Wind Fish.
I was sure Dragon Quest Builders 2 was going to be my GOTY this year. Then they go and remake my most favorite game of all time. Day 1, no question.
How cute ! 🤓
But what is Goomba doing in Zelda games ? 😆
Excellent. Graphics look nice and it’s 20 years since I last played it (and I confess, didn’t finish it due to having to sell my GBC). Almost certain Day 1 purchase.
Good finish to a very strong Direct.
While i was hoping for a peek at animal crossing, this was more than welcome. I like the style and can't wait to play this game!
@Charlie_Girl Happy for you! It looks amazing.
This looks brilliant and really made my day. Best game of the Direct in my opinion.
I beat the 3DS version when it came out. This looks great. I am content. There still will be great games that weren't even talked about. I can't be the only one that already bought FF9.
Finished the original several times, but it's still a classic "pure gameplay" Zelda. Almost certainly getting this.
Kids should love it.
@WaveBoy
I have NEVER played any Zelda games.
I'm not a fan of Zelda games (Except BOTW for some reasons but I still haven't touched my BOTW until today)
But that Zelda games above looked pretty cute for my taste. It looked like Yoshi 3D World style of Zelda games.
BTW, I'm not a Native speaker. I'm Indonesian people. Don't talk to me with some words that only American or Foreign peoples know. 😒
Huh. Wasn't expecting that...yeah, I think I want it.
I still have a gameboy color. Does the game hold up well on there? Should I just get the original?
VERY excited. To be honest, they could have announced nothing else, and this bombshell would have made it worth it. Such a good game, even in the original colourless version. Colour added so much, and now this second remake. My goodness.
To be honest, I knew a lot of the announcements this direct weren't really for me. I was fine with that. Not every game or announcement is going to appeal. However, to end on this. I just want it soon.
I was just thinking the other day that I'll need to replay this at some point soon.
Looking forward to this one; hopefully Metroid Prime Trilogy is coming as well...
This looks fantastic, can't wait to play this!!
Oh boy how much I yelled on this one (I knew it the moment they showed link on the boat as it is the same intro of the original. Fantastic game where you can even jump!!
Not the biggest fan of the artstyle, however this is the easiest day one purchase ever nonetheless
These are my opinions obviously, but i don't like this look. The world looks like it's made from cheap plastic. And link is just so ugly in my opinion. I don't see how this style captures the essence from the original at all... While wind waker was also divisive because of it's graphics, it is incredibly expressive, this looks like it lacks soul entirely. It's sad because i love the original so much.
These graphics and the musical style works better for a yoshi or kirby game.
@WaveBoy
"And I'm wavian bro. Come on down to coconut island and we'll shed some waves and eat fruit by the foot"
What the heck was that means ??
I didn't even understand your words. 🙄
Yaaaay. I so called it.
@NickOfTime90 is it?
I absolutely adore this art style.
Yes take my money Nintendo.
@sakkenijs thank u, I feel I’m taking crazy pills, man is the original far more charming looking. The intro of this trailer vs the actual game is one of the most jarring moments since whenever
I'mma smaaaaaaash that purchase button when this game comes out.
Man... This was out of nowhere! And it's freaking awesome! Hell yeah!
@WaveBoy finally a “hater” like me.
I love the art style they went for here. It looks absolutely gorgeous!
Link, Here I come.... where do I PreOrder this?
Reminded me of the cute artstyle that Nintendoland had! So excited! Very cute graphics
@CairiB I'm a massive Zelda fan too but I also never had the pleasure of playing the original either. This looks fantastic.
This game has so many sentimental memories for me this is a day one purchase absolutely and I hope that Nintendo is making some amiibo to go along with it . What Nintendo showed looks phenomenal.
I do not like this art style at all.
OMG. Link's Awakening is my favorite 2D Zelda and one of the best games of all time. I remember I played it before LTTP, and I was actually slightly disappointed in LTTP because it didn't quite live up to Link's Awakening's pure charm! I will definitely play this. Love the art style, too. I hope they add a bunch of content in the same quirky style as the original.
And those notes of Ballad of the Wind Fish at the end... amazing.
Glad this is coming to Switch and not 3DS.
Yess!, this is awesome, will start new adventure again with link, love it!
@ReaderRagfihs
Same here and I bet lots of other people too. Everybody has different tastes.
How about they remake Mario Land 2 from the Gameboy?
This is the second time this game has been remastered/remade, the first remaster/remake being for the Game Boy Color. Not that I'm complaining, though.
Now let's see the original Zelda get the same treatment, as well as Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages.
Link's Awakening is, imo, the best (originally) portable Zelda game ever (not counting the N64 games that were ported)
I'm curious to hear more details on that reveal, is it primarily a port (with enhanced graphics), or are they also adding content? I know it's on Switch, but I hope it starts at $40. Too many games just bump the price up, but with Steam and mobile games, I really don't think most console games should be sticking to that $50-60 price point unless they are jam packed with quality content (like Smash)
I love this but if they decide to ever remake link to the past I would actually prefer that one in 3D. There is just something to seeing familiar places with a different perspective.
I hope they release a limited edition bundle. I’m excited by the music and that animated cutscene (I hope they have them in game) but I can’t help but feel the art style is a massive let down. 😓
@TAndvig
That’s been done with a link between worlds on 3ds. It’s basically a lttp remake, set in the same world but with changes/additions.
Disappointed this was the second "big" announcement after Mario Maker 2. Give me Metroid Prime trilogy, NOW!
@Der smart point . I have to say I think I like the art, bit different, will look sharp in handheld I reckon.
I WAS excited until I saw the claymation graphics. I have expected Santa and Rudolph to attack Link. This might grow on me but time will tell. I would like to see Ocarina remastered for the Switch.
I’m not sure how I feel about this remake. Links Awakening DX is a game I hold very dear, I still have my copy and my working transparent purple Nintendo Color to play it with, although I’m more likely to play it on my Advance SP.
At first, when I saw the cut scene, I cried like a little child, but then I saw the gameplay footage. It looks... odd. Like the graphics are pretending to be toys. Not sure how I feel about that.
Links Awakening Dx was my first Zelda game as a kid. Definitly picking this up
When this trailer started playing and I realized what it was, I. Went. Nuts. Link's Awakening is one of my favorite handheld Zelda games, and it's getting the remake treatment! I'm definitely excited and will be picking this up for sure!
...Though I agree that the art style is a little...erm...different than what I'd imagined. I'm sure it'll grow on me.
I got very excited when I heard the music and saw the video sequence... Then I realized it was a remake... I’m genuinely surprised about this and will probably buy it since I’ve never played the original but I can’t help but be a little disappointed. I know that’s ridiculous but I guess I thought Windwaker was making a reappearance.
It has the same kind of look as A Link between Worlds, which is a big positive. Definitely at the top of my to-buy list, wasn't the biggest fan back in 1993 but maybe I'll enjoy the remaster more. It's old school style Zelda back on a home console (I use my Switch mostly in docked mode) which is something I've wanted for a long time but never expected to see again.
Well I must say that like everyone else I was impressed, but then thr graphics came....honestly seems lazy that ninty did a remaster instead of a new game, the direct was meh, it started right with MM2( that I already knew it was coming) but then it went downhill, that smash announcement of wait for and announcement sucked, FFIX being shadow dropped was cool and DQ and Platinums game were highlights of the direct, that FE trailer hype went down when shibata( I think dont remember his name) said that needed more time but at least gave a release date, but so far nothing new until Yoshi releases then wait some more for FE and then more for Zelda remake. Bloodstain was fine I guess not impressed at the least.
@tillyboo This game is FULL of Mario references and enemies. In fact later in the game you can fight enemies that look like Kirby.
The first 3 Legend of Zelda games should be remade, not a game boy game. Meh.
This is by far the best, and Darkest Zelda game in the series. You think Majora's Mask was dark? This game has the biggest and darkest plot twist in Zelda, a twist so dark that it makes you want to stop your adventure and not progress any further due to the impact it has. I don't want to spoil anything, but i'll just say that after like the 4-5th temple the game gets a bit depressing with a certain realization.
Not really digging the visual style, but if they make some neat additions to the game, I'm on board. This is one of my favorite Zelda games of all time!
@TheFanatic honestly those are preeeety hard to beat
Anyone else notice the “Zelda” font is directly ripped from Breath of the Wild? Same rips and tears, just no Silent Princess growing out of the Z.
I am digging the art direction of the game! I hope this isn’t more than $40, cuz this doesn’t seem full price worthy unless they’re adding in a bunch of content. I can see them adding in the original game as well and that would be cool.
I absolutely lost it when Link appeared in the animated intro. Link's Awakening was first Zelda title so I absolutely CANNOT WAIT to play this.
Favorite announcement from the Direct.
Love that this is getting remade, but this looks terrible. Like an entry level group of employees slapped this together in a couple months type bad. Or maybe a fan project that nintendo bought...
It looks cheap and low effort by Nintendo standards. Just not impressed.
@Balta666 no lie before I saw the boat with link on it and saw a storm and waves. I instantly said it's links awakening. Then as soon as I link, it cemented my idea. Then I saw the island and the egg and slapped myself silly for thinking I was dreaming
@rjejr
Ya. I left the LINE chat. Sent him his final package a month or two ago and haven’t spoken since. He doesn’t really play Nintendo much nowadays anyways. He’s all into his PlayStation now. And since I don’t really play other consoles anymore it gave us very little in common to talk about.
Anyways, this looks great, Mario Maker looks fantastic, Dragon Quest XI S is like... on some masterpiece classic of the decade level stuff, Dragon Quest Builders 2 looks on point. Glad to see Assassin’s Creed, even though I’m not the biggest fan of the series I wanted a solid entry for Switch, just in case I get in the mood. Glad to see it not only snagged Vita’s AC, which up until now was the best handheld release they had made, but also a mainline numbered entry on top of it, which is a first for portable gaming. Astral Chain looks absolutely insane. Game of dreams. Fire Emblem... let’s just say I already have the special edition locked in.
Honestly, I’m kinda sour they still haven’t announced Metroid Prime Trilogy. I am almost to the point of dreaming about that game every single night I go to bed. If they don’t drop that trilogy this year I might revolt. Or at least, I would, if not for the fact they were cramming so many other awesome games down our throats. Still, I can’t make any promises as for what I may or may not do if that game isn’t out by year’s end. At least we know Pikmin 3 is coming now. That was one of the games King Zhell leaked for 2019. And since everything else he said came true, from the Direct date to 2D Zelda, Mario Maker 2 and Boxboy (not that we needed that as evidence since the guy had an immaculate track record already), Pikmin 3 is 100% lock. Sorry but, Pikmin 4 apparently hit a snag in development which set it back. For now, Pikmin 3 will have to do. And that’s a fair compromise to me because it’s been half a decade since I played it. I don’t remember any of the levels or stages with any degree of detail. So it’ll mostly feel like a new game again. Plus, that Bingo mode is screaming for local co-op with sideways joycon.
Can’t wait for next month when the madness begins. Dragon’s Dogma, Chocobo’s Dungeon, Yoshi, Final Fantasy VII, then Darksiders, Mortal Kombat XI, Final Fantasy X/X-2, Final Fantasy XII, Assassins Creed III Collection, Fire Emblem, Daemon X Machina, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Mario Maker 2, Crash Racing, Sonic Team Racing, Hellblade, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Animal Crossing, Astral Chain, DOOM Eternal, Wolfenstein Youngblood, Pokemon, Resident Evil 4 “Finally the HD Handheld with Gyro” Edition, Dragon Quest Builders 2, Dragon Quest XI S...
And goodness knows what else. I’m thinking some Kingdom Hearts, Monster Hunter and Persona 5 are on deck.
art style is gorgeous .. . also that 2D hand drawn intro makes me want either a Zelda anime show or an actual Zelda game with that same NES-era manual hand drawn style
I almost cried when they announced this, thank you so much Nintendo <3
My eyes opened up as soon as I saw Link on the boat. This was the first Zelda game I ever played, of course I'm excited for this one!
Link checked the chest. Wow! This is a nice chest!
Why can't this guy's made this same thing with super metroid, I cannot understand ☹️
@BenAV did the original have Mario enemies like goomba and chompers?
I will buy 10 copies AT LEAST!
i won't buy this ... i started to like zelda with ocarina of time ( never liked the nes / snes ones ) but i started to love the series with breath of the wild. i will pass on this one and wait for botw 2 ;D
Looks really plastic-y and clumpy, like the world is made of toys more than just simple mobile graphics to my eyes. Very off putting.
Since Botw was my first game in the series I wanted to try more Zelda! Great news!
AC 3 is a remaster. Zelda 2 is a remake. RE2 is a reimagining.
A remaster uses old assets to create a better version of the game. A remake uses all new assets to create a new game that plays like the original. I still don't understand why these words get used interchangeably.
Love this! Hoping for an earlier release date since everything has sort of been packed into the back end of the year.
Looks great, but don't really know how much better they can make the gameplay.
If they charge full price for this I'd struggle to justify the expense.
@N3L
And more.
Wow!!!! One of my favorite games ever!!!!!
Love this game 💝🌺❤️
I hate to complain about an awesome remake like this, but I was really hoping for a fully 2D game with an art style that matched the opening cinema. I have been hoping for the same thing with a Zelda 2 remake.
So glad this didn't come out for 3ds but Switch instead.
@Fiyaball maybe if it does well, we'll get the Oracle games!
Out of curiosity, what's your least favorite?
While cool, very unnecessary. Instead of reimagining the game into a modern 3D Zelda game (like I'd always dreamed), they took the lazy way of a simple remaster. The forced new voices and static "throwback" visuals and animations also take away the central focus of the original: the game's imaginative feelings as you play (DX subtracted from this key element to some degree, too, to be fair, though unlike for this the fast-and-visceral gameplay remained unchanged). All this for a lack of ideas and a need for an easy sale. I hope I'm wrong, but this looks like a hugely and disappointingly missed opportunity.
I was excited when I saw the cartoon intro. But I hate the graphics of the game
@Hoho I really do like it. I understand if that's not the case for everyone.
A must own game!
Very excited about this, I never played the original. Although, this probably means no Windwaker HD for the foreseeable future, and that sucks for me. Might have to break down and buy a WiiU. I wonder what the price will be for Awakening. Best Buy has a placeholder for $60, but I can’t believe they would get full price for this.
@NickOfTime90 I feel so many things about it good and bad
Was so excited when I saw Link, then I saw that egg and it just killed the mood. Fed up of the constant ports and remakes. It looks lovely, but at the end of the day it’s going to feel like the game we’ve played before.
First Zelda game that I played, and the first game that enthralled me like none before and even after for a long time. I remember being excited to play Oot, but I was so put off by the muddied visuals that I went to my room and fired this up on my Gameboy, I even felt a bit guilty. .......
This game i want!
link looks so adorable. Now we have adult link, young link and adorable baby link 🤣
But yes this game ia welcome. In my library!
This was my first favorite game. It was later replaced by Wind Waker, which was then replaced by GTA:SA, which was the replaced by Mario Galaxy, which was then replaced by GTA 5, which was then replaced by BOTW. But this is where it all started for me.
This is the first adventurous game I ever played, and it made me fall in love with the LoZ series, and therefore (and of course because of it's sheer excellence) it's always been one of my top favourite (Zelda) games ever. It hasn't been long since I last played it (on 3DS), but nevertheless I'm over excited to play this version.
I somehow missed the Direct even though I was at home and knew about it, but still, this is a great bit of news to start my day.
@proof21 almost the same (I like GTA, but it's never been my favourite)
Sweet can't wait for a traditional Zelda game on the switch since BotW. Could not really get in to BotW it didn't feel like Zelda game to me.
This looks gorgeous. But I feel bad for this game when the people who’ve only known BoTW get hold of it and expect that.
As someone who played BOTW for 10 hours and got bored that news didn‘t hook me sadly. But maybe the open world of BOTW just wasn‘t for me and I should try that one out?
@zip Wow... Chill, dude... Taste differs I guess, but I find the artwork charming and full of life. But I guess we have a new Windwaker on our hands.
@xpromisedx This looks like a more "traditional" 2D Zelda game (minus the occasional platforming and Mario references, which also were in the original game). If you've played and enjoy any 2D Zelda, I bet you would like this.
@Quarth you may be right! I will follow further news and decide then. We have a lot of time still until it releases :/
Would have preferred a new entry rather a remake. But I like the art style. Reminds me of "Das Sandmännchen", a German show for little kids.
@belmont Well, that’s one way to look at it, but Link isn’t setting out to destroy the world. His goal is to defeat the foes so he can return the world to the way it was, which in his case is returning to Hyrule.
NICE! Beautiful look, Nintendo. The title always had a whimsical, dreamlike quality to it, especially with the absurdity of some characters and cameos, so this style does the title justice. If it sells well, I'd love to see them take a pass at other older Zelda entries
@Kidfunkadelic83 Well, can't please everyone but I hope you'll get your wishes granted next time.
Right dont get me wrong, the art style is decent and somehow keeps the feel of a Gameboy title.
I think introducing it with a scratchy anime movie sequence was a mistake. It created expectations that it didn't live up to.
@abe_hikura
I also thought it would be in the style of the intro sequence and was a bit disappointed even though I like the art style. But the intro was definitely misleading - at least for me.
Link’s awakening looks awesome ! A bit said that Animal Crossing and Pikmin are nowhere to be found
I've been hoping that the ALBW style would make it onto the Switch alongside the usual non-isometric titles, so I'm really happy about this.
Sorry but the art style looks crap, I hate chibo style things
This could very well be my Game Of The Year!
I would have preferred a new one, because this is one of the few I already played and finished. But if it's not full price and gets physically released I might consider it.
Loved LA, not entirely struck on the art style although I admit it's unique. Still a day 1 purchase mind.
I’m super excited for this, I’ve never played Links Awakening before. I just loved A Link Between Worlds to bits, so I was hoping for another 2D Zelda game. This is probably a day one buy for me.
It was the first one I played on original hardware rather than an emulator and I played it a lot. I kept borrowing the gameboy color from my friend and buying batteries for it. It grabbed me a lot more than Link to the Past ever did, but I never finished it.
@Kidfunkadelic83 no Metroid, no SNES and no Retro Studios news- I was positive we'd see whatever it was they were working on for the last 5 years. Really wished Starfox Grand Prix was real, but I guess the Starlink trailer killed off that rumour.
Aside from the nostalgia trip this doesn't do anything for me. Assets seem to have just been upgraded and placed 1:1. Could have been so much more. A decent filler game perhaps, but this direct was, as expected, another disappointment.
Looks cute but it seems nothing was changed apart from the graphics and art style, which are great. Hopefully they added extra dungeons and quests.
Hope there are good extras
WHAA..** i need air..** (takes a puff of my inhaler)**
@Fiyaball I'm in a similar position - I like all Zelda games, but Link's Awakening is on the lower end of the spectrum. I'd rather get another game remade or a new story, but still, this is pretty awesome.
Hopefully the remake will do away with some of the things I didn't like about it, since the concept/setting for the game are actually great.
Good News.......
if this does get a release this year. But Nintendo do have a habit of not sticking to dates.
OK 2019 has 10 months to go, but if we don't get a specific date by E3, expect a push back to 2020 later in the year.
Well this was a surprise! Link's Awakening was awesome on the Gameboy, so I can't wait to play this version. The graphics do look gorgeous.
Looks and plays cute!~
Great surprise didn’t see that one coming, Tetris as well. Also Yoshi looks fantastic.
OMG.. gonna preorder this on eshop right away.. it looks soooooo friggin awesome! Links Awakening was my best childhood gaming experience. Only think I’m not a fan of is the logo.. surely they could’ve done better and if they really couldn’t they should’ve stuck to the original.. the new font sucks!
@Sephiroth_FF I know for some the releases are tiresome but for the likes of myself who missed a lot of the game boy titles and a few of the consoles between nes and N64, these releases sometimes get me more excited than new stuff!
Never played the original so I'll definitely be picking this up - looks absolutely stunning, love the art style!
I'd hoped the whole thing would be 2D, or more heavily stylized 3D, but for what they've gone with, it's still very cute and endearing.
It is probably my favorite Zelda but if they release it at a $50-60 price point then it is a non-starter for me. There just isn't enough game to justify a full price release.
Port, remake, port, remastered, definitive edition, ultimate edition, eternal collection, really super duper final edition, etc.
I am bored of all these laziness in games development lately. All these redressing, reskinning of old games and resold them at full price. What's the matter Nintendo? Ran out of creativity?
It took me by surprise but I'm really loving the art style! Link's Awakening is one of the few Zelda games I didn't play as a kid so I'm all over this.
@Medic_alert
That's what I meant man, did it really matter that much you had to call me out lol
@Retupmocnin It helps cut down on resources in-between new ones, so I'm okay with it, but honestly I'd rather these out of nowhere than last gen ports sold at full retail. At least it's a neat lil surprise(as long as they keep it fairly priced); stuff like MK8 Deluxe, as well as it sold, don't interest me.
This game looks adorbs af as of now.
2009 called, their want their tilt shift back.
I got so emotional seeing this reveal. Link's Awakening was my first Zelda game so I have my attachments to it. I think this is gonna be great and I can't wait to play the final product.
First Zelda I ever played was the DX version on my then new gameboy color. I Still think this is one of the best zelda-games ever. I'm so going to get this the very second it's available!
@MarinaKat Sure I know that it was the main-theme, but the 8bit-Theme on Game Boy is so much nice and cooler than this newly arranged one, especially for a remake... They over-did it...
@Retupmocnin On the one hand you are right, on the other hand I really like it that this trend makes old generation games more easily accessable to newer generations. Personally, I like a good remake/port better then a newly developed, but poor game.
@Reverandjames For some people in here this is all they have. Video games and complaining about video games because they don't fit into their microscopic vision of utopia.
hyped!! when I was a kid this was the first game I owned, but for some reason it never saved. dunno if I was dumb or if something was wrong with the cart (I was like six to be fair), but i'd play it for hours, completing the first dungeon in one go, but then it would all disappear. I'm so excited to have a chance to finally play it! also, I feel like the art style is perfect- adorable and 3d, but simple enough that you still feel like you're playing the same game, not a completely different one. i'm so excited!!!!!
Welp Nintendo is trying to get me fired. I jumped up and started dancing at my desk. My boss sits behind me.
One of the few Zeldas I've never gotten to experience. This was a great surprise, and for me was the highlight of the Direct. Where can I preorder now?
@Medic_alert
No worries
Zelda II wasnt it?
@NESlover85
The rumors are that this started as a 3DS game, and was almost complete when they decided to delay the launch in order to create a Switch version as well. Obviously the 3DS version was later dropped.
Making the game available on Switch is the right choice, but I will still mourn the lost 3DS version. If it exists, then maybe it will be leaked someday so that we can see what it was like.
@Manah it's Game Boy style the whole room needed to fit on that small screen
I swear if this isn't called links re-awakening...
@Kisame83 Spirit Tracks, most definitely. Couldn't even be bothered to finish it.
The Oracle games could possibly eventually be remade (which I'd adore), but since Capcom developed them, there could be some issues there.
Blegh! I love Link's Awakening. But the art style they chose to do it in is hideous.
@Sinton Well there is Link's Awakening DX which is in color.
@Tempestryke That’s true, I forgot about that (even though that was the version I beat).
@Arbor Sounds like something was wrong with the cartridge.
@Retupmocnin development of new game takes many years. In order to fill the gaps between new releases remakes are made. They require much less work as many of the assets can be reused or improved upon without working from scratch. So it doesn't really hinder development of new releases. Also it allows new players to experience older games
@EasyDaRon I'm aware of all of that (perhaps I should have said "remaster-esque", but the effect is the same). My point is that it's very much a vain remake of a game that deserves far, far better.
It has some high points, I agree, like that opening trailer, but so far nothing extraordinary or unique. A very blank perspective of a Game Boy killer app.
@RatKing64 The graphics and the whole feel of it looks like a 3DS game.
Not keen on the eyes, but otherwise pleasantly surprised. Hopefully the Oracle games also recieve this treatment ^_^
Probably my favorite surprise announcement from Nintendo since the Metroid Prime 4 reveal.
@JaxonH Your killing me w/ that Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4 news. The snag w/ Pikmin 4 was probably they made the entire game for the Wii U and are having a hard time getting it to work well w/o the 2nd screen. They managed it w/ Zelda BotW but Pikmin has 100 Pikmin to manage over a large area, not 1 Link, so it probably worked better w/ dual screens. And Pikmin 3, well I just went on a rant this morning about how as a Wii U owner I've seen enough improved Wii U games on Switch. I'm fine with the ports and sequels, games are games and money is money, but all the neat little additions added to the Switch versions should be added into the Wii U versions as well I paid $60 each for a bunch of those. Guess we'll see what they add into Pikmin 3 and I can just be happy it worked so well w/ the Gamepad. And I hated the ending of Pikmin 3 - game should have had a choice - collect more fruit or leave and see the credits - but there was no choice, they just forced the credit and ending on me w/ over half the fruit left. Never went back. Won't go back. They'll probably give you a choice in the port. 😂
Yeah, knew that was a good Direct for you, anime JRPG up the wazoo. And you made some good levels in SMM. Too hard for me to beat, but that's a given, they wouldn't be very good if I could beat them. I'm hoping they hand pick some really good levels form the first game, and make some more. I'm nto a fan of a level editor w/o a game. I know the main story in Dreams is only supposed to be like 2 hours long but at least there is one. My kids will have fun though, level editing is kinda their thing. And 2D games, I'm more 3D myself. Still waiting on those analog trigger Joycon so I can get a Super Mario Sunshine port w/ HD rumble. I'm like the only person alive who seems to want that. I'm ok w/ an improved port of that game, Gamecube was 3 gen and like 15 years ago, nto last gen and a year or 3.
So, do you have more than 1 Switch yet? You w/ only 1 of anything is kind of odd, but there haven't been really great bundles yet and even you pretty much only need 1 hybrid. We're ok w/ 1 as my kids are busy w/ school but hopefully we get a Mini for when my kid goes off to college in 18 months. Yeah, I'm thinking 18 months ahead, college prep is all consuming.
Gonna go start diner, I'll catch ya later. Wow, 327 comments and still going for a Gameboy remaster? I figured this thread would have died after like 26 comments. Crazy.
@CairiB I completely agree. Not everyone can play everything for one reason or another. For this game, even if I did play it before, I'd be thrilled to play it with new coat of paint and new mechanics.
This is cool, but it's going to need more than a fancy new art style to convince me to double dip with the DX version I already have via the 3DS Virtual Console.
Really looking forward to this. The original is essentially a perfect game and probably my favorite in the entire Zelda series.
The only niggling complaint with it is how often you have to bring up the inventory screen to swap out what items you have equipped (which was a function of the Game Boy only having 2 face buttons).
Hard to say for certain since the video doesn't show any HUD or inventory screen, but it looks like they may have addressed that by giving dedicated buttons to the sword and shield, since Link jumps over things and still seems to have both the sword and shield equipped, which would be impossible in the original. So that's exciting.
My other biggest question is whether this version will also include the special "Color Dungeon" and attendant armor upgrade from the DX version.
Best Nintendo announcement of all time. This is by far my favorite game ever made, and was a complete shock!
Hey folks - I just wanted to point out the 'Blossom Tales' game on Switch. It's a really lovingly created clone of something close to Link's Awakening - but with a bit more playful dialog. I''m really enjoying it and I might scratch that itch 'til this remake comes out.
@Retupmocnin
Hush..!
Awesome!
