Japanese chart figures are now in for 11th - 17th March, revealing that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is on the brink of becoming the best-selling Switch game in the region.
This week saw another 20,706 copies be sold at retail (making it the best-selling Switch game this week), taking its total sales to 2,953,145. Splatoon 2, which has been the best-selling game on Switch for a considerable amount of time now in Japan, is currently at 2,962,831 sales.
As you can see, if Smash Ultimate manages to sell 10,000 more copies than Splatoon 2 next week, it'll take over as the best-selling Switch title in Nintendo's home region. Splatoon 2 shifted 7,516 copies this week (just over 13,000 less than Smash), so it's looking pretty likely that it'll happen.
Elsewhere, two new PS4 titles take the top two positions this week: The Division 2 and One Piece: World Seeker.

As you may be aware, Media Create (the company which supplies our Japanese gaming chart data) is changing the way in which it releases its sales data from next month. It's currently unknown how this might affect our coverage.

The title should be "Media Create charts", because in others trackers, Splatoon 2 is already at 3M.
Now that's what you call a perfect title/header combo.
@nhSnork Thanks, I do try 😉
And we're all surprised?
I'm surprised that LoZ: Breath of the Wild's lifetime sales are that low
@sikthvash it’s just the lifetime Japanese sales, not worldwide.
That’s not that low.
@Roam85 phew! Makes sense! I know it still a big number, but thought it would have sold a heck of a lot more, especially when you see Super Mario Party's sales.
I must be the only person that bought Smash and regret it. I don’t find it a fun game to play, don’t get me wrong, I ca see the appeal and it’s of very high quality, but for me it’s just meh!
@sikthvash The Zelda series hasn't historically sold as well in Japan as in Western regions. Its staying power in Japan has actually been quite remarkable!
@mist I agree with you.. I bought a digital copy of Smash and have about 10 hours into it since launch. It’s fun to play with others but I don’t find myself wanting to pour oodles of time into it. I prefer Splatoon to Smash because I want to play it more.
@Tirza Media Create is generally regarded as the most accurate tracker around.
I still don't get Smash, I guess. Sometimes it feels like it's the cult status that sells it and little else. I mean, Splatoon screams ingenuity, and brilliant design, both visually and gampleay-wise.
While Smash is at it's core... basically a very well-balanced fighter? Sure, the amount of work put in is commendable, but ... maybe I don't get something.
Pokémon Sword / Shield will bury both Splatooon 2 and SSBU in the sales charts once they release. Animal Crossing will most likely pass Splatoon 2 as well. Folks don't seem to realize how globally popular the Animal Crossing franchise is. It's up there with Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, and Smash.
@mist @pinta_vodki Not being much of a fan of fighting games, I never "got" Smash until I took a chance on the 3DS version and something clicked (possibly the hour-long train ride to work every day). On the other hand, after a million billion people convinced me to buy Splatoon for my Wii U, even though I kind of hate shooters... I must have played that game for about 10 minutes total. I don't think any of us needs to feel bad for not "getting" a game that everyone else seems to get.
I will really miss these features if they stop. I always really look forward to seeing the Japanese charts.
Nice to see a Western developed game up there - you go Ubisoft. So ready to play Judgment.
Same old, Same old on Switch. Sekiro and Yoshi next.
@Der
It's surprising in a way. I could see Smash outselling Splatoon (though it's not like Splatoon has much of a history to go on), but the surprise is just how quickly it happened. Ultimate has absolutely crushed it in sales and has no signs of slowing down.
I'll be disappointed when these articles stop. They're something I look forward to every week.
Splatoon is the better game in my opinion
I've played both over 200 hours and I can conclude that:
Both these games need major improvements in their online system...
@Indielink I know. Nintendo even uses them. But this very site has used Famitsu numbers without distinction.
Those putting down BoTW missed the point 2+ yrs and still selling. As to beating Splatoon2 that shouldn't surprise anyone here.
@mist Nah I wish I waited a few years for a price drop myself. I don't have people over often for local fun & I'm not enjoying online play.
@Magician If Sword and Shield prove to be traditional main series games and Pokemon Bank is confirmed for Switch as well, I imagine that Sword and Shield when counted together will match and probably exceed Splatoon 2 or SSB. Animal Crossing however, while one of my favorite games, and with a large and dedicated fanbase, still doesn't appeal to as wide an audience.
@Heavyarms55 Didnt the last two AC games push over 10m sales each? Id say they hit a wide audience.
@PhilKenSebben They absolutely did very well. But not on the level of Pokemon, Mario, LoZ or Smash.
@Heavyarms55 Botw, the best selling in the series, was at a hair from 10m. And Smash beats it with a few million more sold in certain entries. The other two yeah. Anyway, my point is only that AC is not as niche as you may think it is.
@PhilKenSebben I can't deny the sales numbers, but the culture impact of things like LoZ, Pokemon and Mario clearly outclass Animal Crossing. Despite those sales, AC remains fairly unknown outside of its fanbase, where everyone and their uncle and grandma knows Mario, Pikachu and Link/Zelda. I'm not trying to bash on AC. New Leaf was one of my fave games on 3DS and before it was confirmed, AC on Switch was my most wanted, not confirmed title.
It makes me smile whenever I see Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Zelda BOTW still kicking butt in sales.
*fewer than 10,000 copies
Can't wait till Switch is over PS4 lifetime in Japan!
