Re: Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! Brings A "New Retro FPS" To Switch 2 Next Year

notreallyhere

Had to do a double-take when I read the article, as I went to Art School with a gal named Samantha Dietz! Very talented painter. And a wonderful friend. But we drifted apart after a time, as people do...

Haven't seen or talked to her in decades. I hope she's doing OK. Not quite the nostalgia I was expecting to feel after reading this article, but thanks for the little trip down memory lane, all the same, NL ^_^

Re: Round Up: Limited Run Games 10th Anniversary Special - Every Switch Announcement & Physical

notreallyhere

Slam City wins the day for me, here! Yes, really 8)

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the glow-up for Night Trap and Double Switch. And it'll be nice to play Slam City without having to swap out the four different game discs.

I do wonder what licensing issues they ran into with that one, though...? I'd imagine Scottie would work pretty cheap, but his signature Nike shoe was also featured prominently in the game. I guess we'll find out next year

Re: Nightdive's Excellent 'System Shock' Remake Is Getting A Switch 1 & 2 Port

notreallyhere

@vio For similar games, check out the ports of Alien Isolation, Doom Eternal, and Warframe. After playing all three of those for myself, I'm convinced there's not much the OG Switch can't do - as long as the right developers are involved

@Zeebor15 I bought the retail copy of this to play on my basic, 2013 launch-model Xbox One last Summer. Had a nice time with it, and also wasn't left wishing I had played it on beefier hardware. At the time, I felt that a port to the Switch would have been more than possible. And I'm glad to see now that my hunch was correct

Re: Talking Point: Can Metroid Prime 4's Title Screen Go As Hard As The Others?

notreallyhere

@PinderSchloss I've always felt the same about the Prime series as a whole. Never felt the numbers were necessary when there is already a subtitle:

Metroid Prime
Metroid Echoes
Metroid Corruption
Metroid Beyond

aaaaaaand... done!

Even Hunters and Federation Force were saddled with the "Prime" moniker. I've never understood Nintendo's Hell-bent insistence on making sure players were aware that the Prime games were their own thing, essentially spin-offs of the mainline Metroid brand.

Aren't they canon? Or have they been retconned? Are they legitimately considered part of the main Metroid timeline? I genuinely do not know - and the attempts to keep the Prime series separated from the rest of the Metroid games has always struck me as a little odd.

Meanwhile, as others have said, we get Super (3) Fusion (4) and Dread (5) without added numbers in the title. Even Return of Samus didn't need a "II" in the title, but I think that was more of a function of the era, as Nintendo's mainline series sequels (Zelda, Mario, StarTropics) were usually numbered at that point.

Honestly, they're just numbers. But it's the inconsistency regarding which games in the series are numbered - and which aren't - that has always made me wonder about the reasoning behind these decisions.

Re: Grand Theft Auto 6 Has Been Delayed And Will Now Launch In May 2026

notreallyhere

@-wc- Amen. In fact, this might be as good of a jumping-off point, as any...

I'm older, and the Switch is my only current console. I do not play games on PC or mobile. I simply don't have the patience or desire to go to a larger, all-encompassing gaming site and sift through all the non-Nintendo news. All I tend to see are countless articles for consoles I don't own or games I can't play.

I choose NintendoLife for Nintendo news. And I choose to read the comments for some articles in the event I may come across some more information or context that the main article did not provide.

I think it's entirely fair to question whether or not GTA6 news is relevant to a Nintendo-centric site. And I find it quite tone-deaf that a NintendoLife editor would choose to drop the, "Don't like it? Don't read it," line on the same day that NintendoLife posts an article lamenting the closure of Giant Bomb and Polygon.

"Support The People And Sites You Love, Before It's Too Late"

If only NintendoLife's editors supported their readers with the same compassion.

@Olliemar28 Giant Bomb and Polygon had their share of loyal readers over the years. And it's likely that some of the content and opinions posted on those sites rubbed those same readers the wrong way.

They didn't like it, so they didn't read it.

And look what happened.

Re: Switch 2 GameCube Controller 'Early Purchase' Goes Live Next Week (North America)

notreallyhere

@Maulbert I agree completely

In my defense, though, I have large, bony hands. The smaller Japanese-style controllers of that era give me unbearable discomfort and cramps after only brief periods of use. It's a big reason why I don't play Gamecube (or PS2) games so much in my older years.

By contrast, I actually find the N64 controller pretty comfortable! But both the Dualshock and Gamecube designs are hard for me to wrap my hands around. Literally. Also a big reason why I never kept up with Sony consoles, and also struggled with the DS and 3DS.

In saying that, I have found the Switch Pro Controller to be an absolute joy to use! It's my favorite modern controller, hands down - no pun intended

Re: System Shock 2's 25th Anniversary Remaster Infects Switch This June

notreallyhere

I'm with the user above (and the author!) in that I hope the OG System Shock remake (or remaster!) comes to the Switch at some point. I played the remake on an original model Xbox One a few months back, and honestly see no reason why the current Switch couldn't handle it. It's all a matter of who handles the port, if it happens at all.

Though I do think it would need a control overhaul. Having to drag a virtual cursor across the screen with the Xbox gamepad was no fun at all! I hope that SS2's gamepad support is a bit better thought-out, and more console-friendly.

I will gladly get SS2 on Switch, though I will wait for a retail release. Atari / Nightdive has been pretty good lately about providing hard copies of their games on their website and at major retail outlets. Whether or not it'll get a deluxe treatment with some extra "feelies" remains to be seen, but I am keen to wait it out and see what they come up with

Re: Chances Are You've Never Heard Of Nightdive Studio's Latest Switch Rerelease

notreallyhere

@Wisestfool "If I wanted to be talked down to, I'd just head to the comments section..."

It's no so much disrespect on the part of the author as it is poor judgement. Never assume that your audience knows - or doesn't know - something in advance. As a journalist, it is your responsibility to enlighten your readers through your reporting. But when you lead off with a headline like that, you are interjecting an assumption that simply doesn't need to be there in the first place.

"Vintage Sci-Fi Adventure Game Gets Surprise Release on Switch Next Week"

That's all that needed to be said in the headline! Make the headline about the news within the story - and leave opinions or assumptions about the readers out of it.

Re: Chances Are You've Never Heard Of Nightdive Studio's Latest Switch Rerelease

notreallyhere

@Slobbert @nessisonett Came here to say the same thing! And, no, the sub-header follow-up does not make the condescension in the headline OK.

I don't need the NintendoLife staff to treat me like that. I'd like to be able to simply read the articles without being made to feel foolish, or called-out. If I wanted to be talked down to, I'd just head to the comments section

Re: Opinion: Against All Odds - Why Does RPG RNG Hate Me?

notreallyhere

@DanijoEX-the-Pierrot @Servbot_EJ PSO, eh? We could be friends

The original NES Final Fantasy is a notoriously difficult game. Particularly if you played it back in the day with no maps, or play it in a BITD style these days with no Internet help. It required heavy grinding, and getting lucky with the encounter rate was sometimes the only way you'd make it out of a dungeon alive.

I played it off and on for a few years before I finally progressed to the final dungeon. I thought my party was in a pretty good state, until I crossed a bridge deep within the dungeon and came face to face with WarMech! My party was toast, and the realization that I would have to spend hours grinding - again - to make it past that boss began to sink in.

I spent the next week or so grinding and leveling up before I felt comfortable taking on that dungeon again. Got to the same bridge, walked across it, and... no WarMech?? Did my game glitch out?? I paused for a moment, then walked on, and ended up beating the final boss in that same session.

Years later, I found out that WarMech was a 1/64 chance encounter - which I just so happened to encounter on my first try. How's that for odds >..<

Re: Feature: But The Future Can Change - Chrono Trigger And Learning To Love The World

notreallyhere

"Keep Hope Alive" is a line I'll always associate with Jesse Jackson, but a) I'm American, and b) I'm old. Things generally were a bit more optimistic back in 1988, though >_<

I was never a huge fan of Chrono Trigger, but I was certainly impressed by it when I rented it during the Summer of '95. Couldn't afford to buy it (it retailed for $74.95 at my local store - about $155 nowadays...) but had to make do with several rentals, either starting over or playing someone else's save each time. Those were the days!

I probably would have liked it more if I hadn't already played a RPG with time-travel themes (Final Fantasy Legend 3) or ones that juxtaposed environmental issues with the fallacy of mankind (Phantasy Star 2, Secret of Mana). But for people that came into CT fresh, having never played a RPG, or anything else like it before, I can certainly see why it made such a lasting impression

Re: Pokémon Almost Became A "Gritty" Baseball-Themed RPG In The West

notreallyhere

@Markiemania95 Thank you for saying this! I read the article and came away with the same conclusion. It sounds like the "Baseball" idea was floated, maybe briefly considered, but cast aside before too long. It also seemed like the brainchild of an ad agency / marketing department, and nothing more.

"...just how close we were to getting Pokémon under the guise of a baseball RPG."

To me, it doesn't sound like we were very close at all

Re: Opinion: It's Taken 30 Years, But 'Terminator 2D' Could Right A Childhood Wrong

notreallyhere

My uncle bought me the Game Boy version of T2 as a birthday present back in the day. He rarely got me anything for my birthday (he's a lovable, yet forgetful type) and to this day, it's the only video game he's ever bought me. I was stunned, and grateful.

Was it a good game? Ehhhhh... But as a huge Metroid / Contra / Run N Gun genre fan, I learned to like it all the same. I thought it was pretty cool you started off playing as John Connor in the future, then had to re-program the T-800 to send back in time, where you then spent the rest of the game playing as Arnie.

I had a nice time with it, and did manage to finish it a few times. It's not perfect, but I do look back on it fondly.

This new version, though? I dunno. I think it's about 30 years too late >..<

Re: Opinion: We Need More Couch Co-op RPGs

notreallyhere

I used to play Secret of Mana with the girl next door, way back when. Dawwwww. I wonder whatever happened to her...

I was crushed when I found out that Trials of Mana didn't have any sort of multiplayer. It's a fantastic game - and I would've bought it, regardless - but I just sort of took for granted that there would be some sort of two or three-player mode built in. Split screen? One Switch per player? Seemed like a huge missed opportunity - especially considering how boneheaded the partner AI can be during boss battles >..<

I've found that the best co-op RPGs tend to be very RPG-lite, or closer to beat-'em-ups. Gauntlet Legends. X-Men Legends. The Marvel Ultimate Alliance series. I've played all of those with four players, and with different players at different points in time. The low barrier for entry and pick-up-and-play aspects really make them welcoming for new players, especially those who don't really like RPGs.

Phantasy Star Online: Episode I & II takes the cake, though! It was about the only game that would peel my Diablo and WoW-loving friends away from their PCs. We all loved the character creator and modest personal touches, and would spend months on end diving through the various dungeons with four players.

It may have been a bit more advanced than, say, Gauntlet, and I had a hard time convincing some of my friends to give it a try, as the RPG aspects were a little over their heads. But for Action RPG vets who loved building stats and looking for random item drops, it was an easy sell. Truly a gaming experience I will never forget.

Re: Guilty Gear Strive Estimated Switch File Size Revealed

notreallyhere

Why is anyone assuming that a Switch 2 version would have crossplay? And why would anyone assume that the standard Switch wouldn't be able to run this game just fine??

As a dinosaur who never plays online, the lack of crossplay doesn't bother me one bit. I'm definitely looking forward to picking this one up! The wife is a huge GG fan - dating back to the X2 days - and we're both looking forward to finally getting our hands on this and playing against each other like old times.

That being said, I'll wait for a price drop. I don't see any reason why this wont be $30 or so in a month or two

Re: Conan The Barbarian Joins Mortal Kombat 1's DLC Roster Next Week

notreallyhere

@Waveboy We're very much on the same page

Regarding Arcade 1Up, the price point is key. For the hundred bucks I paid for mine, I'm thrilled! But if I had bought it at full price, or paid what they ask for them now (three, four, five hundred - or more) I might have a different opinion. But the screen and controls do the job, and most importantly, have not broken down after a half-decade of regular use. That's more than I can say for some consoles I've owned...

I really don't think you can go wrong with any of the classic MK games across any of the consoles of the time. Different strengths and weaknesses, but fun to play all the same. But I will say this - that Super Nintendo version of MKII is special. It just felt like they really got everything right with that port, and the Genesis version absolutely pales in comparison! By the time MK3 came around, though, it was a much closer race. It helps that both the SNES and Genesis ports had the same developer (Sculptured Software?) and I think they really got the most out of each console version. For the Sega one, I was stunned by how many voice clips they managed to include, scratchy as they were. But wow, is that SNES one a real looker!

Nice talking to you! I think I'll fade back into the background now - the regular readers might prefer if this conversation shifted back towards current MK games. Then again, maybe not ~_^

Re: Conan The Barbarian Joins Mortal Kombat 1's DLC Roster Next Week

notreallyhere

@Waveboy They had one during the 360 / PS3 days! I had it, and played it often. No idea why it didn't make the jump to this gen, or why it isn't backwards compatible on Xbox.

As far as playing at home, I'd vouch for one of the many Arcade 1Up MK cabinets on the market. Got one on clearance at WalMart for $99 around five years ago, and while I don't play it much, I just turn it on sometimes to let the attract mode run. And I love the original MKII arcade art on the sides, featuring Raiden.

Though, truthfully, I play the original 3 MK games on my Sega Genesis more than anything else - despite owning that arcade cabinet! Old habits die hard ^_^

Legitimately curious if Alana was allowed to choose her own photos / article topper image for this article, or if one of the NL editors chose them for her. Because I have a hard time believing she would have put DeviantArt Fio in that main image, herself...

Re: Best Of 2024: Tricks Of The Trade-In - Chronicles Of An Ex-GAME Employee

notreallyhere

Thanks for the re-post, Ollie! I missed this article the first time around

Never worked at a game store, but as someone with decades' worth of customer experience, I find many of these situations relatable. Violent customer behavior was, unfortunately, much more common back before CCTV was the norm at many businesses, and I've definitely had my share of being yelled at and attacked. Even had a customer at a coffee bar throw their piping-hot drink at my face. But I've likewise managed to de-escalate certain situations - in more recent times - by informing unruly customers that they're on-camera. Funny how that works...

I'm glad you were able to bring the person responsible for attacking you to justice! It's something that nobody working retail should ever have to deal with. Period.

Also, early models of the PS2 were just as bad at causing those circular scratches on discs. My buds and I used to call them the "Rings of Saturn," and would say that a game had "earned its rings" whenever those scratches would occur. Happened to my own games, and I saw them on plenty of games I would rent. And I never bumped or moved my console when it was in use.

For me, the PS2 was easily the most unreliable console I've ever owned, but it always seems to get a pass from gamers. Regardless, it helped me learn an important lesson about the risks of being an early adopter of new tech.

Re: Opinion: Chrono Trigger Isn't The Only Great Time-Travel RPG On DS

notreallyhere

While not a DS game, I can think of another great, portable, time-traveling RPG from handhelds past - Final Fantasy Legend 3 / SaGa 3, for the original Game Boy.

It's a simple game compared to CT and RH, but also a spectacular effort given its time and hardware limitations. Nice visuals, excellent soundtrack, and a fairly lengthy playtime, to boot!

Little kid me absolutely adored the game back in the day. And upon playing CT on the SNES a year or two later, I couldn't help but think to myself, "This seems familiar..."

While I didn't know it at the time, it absolutey boggles my mind that Square didn't see fit to release any of the Game Boy SaGa / FFL games in Europe back in the day. You guys in the UK missed out on some real quality titles from that era, and it's nothing short of a crying shame.

At least the old-school SaGa Collection is available now on Switch! Worth the price if you can stomach the throwback nature of the three titles - though it may be hard to do without a little nostalgia to help you out >..<

Re: 133 Games You Should Pick Up In Nintendo's 'Cyber Deals' Switch eShop Sale (North America)

notreallyhere

The Samurai Shodown reboot may have "only" gotten an 8 on here, but I couldn't help but notice that it's currently on sale for 85% off >..<

I'd been wanting to try it for years, but the entry price and DLC costs always scared me away. Thanks to the sale, I was able to buy the complete game with every bit of DLC for less than $20 USD. And I had no idea that one of the added characters was Baiken, from Guilty Gear??

Been playing it here and there for the last few nights, and am having the time of my life so far! Totally worth it at that price if you're a fan of old-school fighters - like me ^_^

Re: Review: Crow Country (Switch) - A PS1-Style Horror Homage That Blends Old With New

notreallyhere

@Zealv2 Have you ever tried Parasite Eve?

Critics at the time described it almost exactly as the kind of game you mentioned, a combination of Resident Evil and Final Fantasy 7. And there's a lot to like about it, too - a memorable storyline, unique battle system, and a fantastic soundtrack.

Plus, you can play through it in a day or two! It's kind of a forgotten classic these days, and I absolutely can't recommend it enough

Re: DOOM Is Getting A New And Improved Definitive Release On Super Nintendo

notreallyhere

I'm a huge fan of the Super Nintendo version of Doom! As someone who didn't have a PC back then, this was the only way I could play the game and see what all the fuss was about, so to speak.

I'm excited about this re-release, but I have to see some gameplay footage first. How will they be "improving" it, besides the bullet points listed? Now that is has additional levels, are they changing the existing level layouts, as well? The OG SNES game had some altered maps as well as different means of accessing hidden levels versus the PC original. I wonder if they'll be resetting the maps to be on-par with the PC game?

I am disappointed by no mention of multiplayer. The SNES version had X-Band support for two-player deathmatch. It would have really been something if they developed a workaround, like a SNES link cable similar to what was available on the PS1. SNES Doom, with multiplayer deathmatch and / or co-op? A guy can dream, right??

LRG still owes me a PC copy of Maniac Mansion that I pre-ordered 18 months ago. I've pretty much sworn them off since. But if this looks like it's coming together to be something great, they might just get my business. For just the standard version, though

Re: Capcom Says There Might Be An Opportunity For A New MvC Game

notreallyhere

@WaveBoy Valid

Thankfully, I already have it for the Dreamcast! But many don't. And as you said, snagging it for the DC can be an expensive proposition, nowadays.

I would gladly buy it again if it became available for modern systems! Such an oddball game. But when it comes to giant robot fighting games (this one, Virtual-On, Cyberbots, etc.) I just can't get enough...

Re: Soapbox: New Roots - How Pikmin 4 Made My Move Abroad Bloom

notreallyhere

Soooo... if you're a female journalist who wants to write for NintendoLife, is it a requirement that you must have moved across the Atlantic to live with your partner in North America at one point or another??

As an American, I say welcome! If the two of you do plan on staying here long term, the best advice I can give you is this: never forget how vast this country really is. If you're happy where you are now, wonderful! But if not, you have many, many options for where to go next.

My wife and I "retired" to a small community in the Pacific Northwest, and couldn't be happier to have gotten away from it all, so to speak. We just focus on the day-to-day of our own little lives and tune out the rest of the noise. After all, life is sometimes at its best when you just focus on the little things. Much like Pikmin ^_^

A side note about houses - it really depends on where you live! I'm surprised you mentioned an abundance of wooden houses in the Midwest; in my experience, nearly every house out that way is made out of brick. Plenty in the South and towards the East Coast are, as well. To my knowledge, this has to do with where bricks were produced back in the day (the South) and how difficult / financially irresponsible it was to transport them to further-out parts of the country.

I was born back East, and every house on my street was brick. Out West, here on the coast, they're nearly all wood! But I can assure you, there are plenty of brick houses in America if you know where to look

Re: Beyond Good & Evil Switch Collector's Edition Revealed, Pre-Orders Open Next Week

notreallyhere

@GrailUK I had a feeling my comment may have been taken as such ^_^

Patience is one thing. Feeling as if I've been misled is another.

If LRG had been more transparent, in that not all orders would ship on (or near) the actual release date, I would have at least had a better idea of what I was signing up for.

I would be fine with a modest shipping delay, and an explanation. But an extended delay with no explanation is frustrating, to say the least.

It's not like the actual release date got delayed, meaning that everyone has to wait a little longer. Some got their orders on release. Some didn't. And some still haven't gotten theirs months later.

In this case, I think I am fair to feel slighted.

As far as patches, Maniac Mansion is 37 years old. I think It's already gotten all of the updates it's going to get

Re: Beyond Good & Evil Switch Collector's Edition Revealed, Pre-Orders Open Next Week

notreallyhere

@GrailUK They're fine if you stick to their in-stock items. I sometimes buy from them when they have restock sales, and all of those orders have shipped quickly. But if you pre-order, well...

I've only pre-ordered one item from them - the PC re-release of Maniac Mansion. Ordered it in March of 2023, and it began shipping in March of this year.

I say, "began shipping," as my copy still hasn't shipped yet. Even though many copies have since flooded eBay, and plenty of influencers seem to have gotten theirs already. When I contacted LRG, I was told that orders ship in batches, and mine would ship at a later date.

That was three months ago. No progress since. My order page even says it's in-stock and ready to ship.

So, pre-order if you want, but know that you aren't guaranteed to receive your order on the release date - or months after the fact. Frankly, I wish I'd just gotten mine from an eBay seller from the get-go, because at least I would have it by now!

Oh, and there was also that thing where they were shipping "Collector's Edition" copies of games on CD-Rs, without notifying anyone ahead of time that they would be doing so. But that's another story...
