Well, what a fantastic and completely out-of-the-blue surprise! Nintendo has revealed Paper Mario: The Origami King for Nintendo Switch.
The latest game in the Paper Mario series sees Princess Peach welcoming Mario and Luigi to the Kingdom’s origami festival. Things don't sound quite as peachy as they might have hoped, though, as you can see in the brand new trailer above. It seems as if King Olly, who claims to be the ruler of the Origami Kingdom, has hatched a devious plot that endangers everything Mario holds dear.
Here's some PR to tell you all about it:
Mario faces one of his most thrilling challenges yet in Paper Mario: The Origami King when the dangerous King Olly unleashes his plan to fold the entire world. Just when matters couldn’t get worse, he’s bound Princess Peach’s Castle in giant, colored streamers and transported it to a distant mountain. He’s even transformed Bowser’s minions into Folded Soldiers and enlisted them in his treacherous cause.
Luckily, Mario is equipped with a range of new tools at his disposal to help secure victory. One of Mario’s new abilities, called 1000-Fold Arms, allows you to interact with the landscape by stretching out and pulling, peeling and revealing new locations, helping you to solve puzzles and uncover unexpected surprises. Along the way, you’ll enlist the help of characters old and new, such as King Olly’s good-natured sister, Olivia, along with a range of unlikely allies, including Bowser himself! If they haven’t yet folded to the whims of King Olly’s origami will, Mario will accept all the help he can find with open arms!
Paper Mario: The Origami King also introduces a new ring-based battle system that lets you flex your puzzle-solving skills to line up scattered enemies and maximize damage. While the enemies may be crafted from paper, these dynamic, turn-based battles are far from stationary. It’ll require a sharp mind to make short work of these crafty enemies.
Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, has shared the following in a press release:
"Paper Mario: The Origami King delivers a grand new adventure on Nintendo Switch for players to wrap themselves up in. This game marks the debut of the Paper Mario series on Nintendo Switch, expanding the vast library of games with another standout entry in a beloved franchise."
The game will be launching exclusively on Switch on 17th July for $59.99 in both digital and physical forms, and you should find the game already available to pre-purchase on the eShop. We have a whole bunch of glorious screenshots and a first look at the box art, too.

Well that came out of nowhere. Just reloaded my Facebook feed and bam, trailer. Release date is quite soon too.
Well that came outta nowhere...I was hoping for a Color Splash port, but I'll take a new game too!
@BenAV Pfft, we said the exact same thing. 😂
So great that out of nowhere comes a surprise announcement for Paper Mario!
Day.... 1
Wow, where did this come from, great to know Nintendo can drop bombs at anytime.
I dunno yet. The game looks nice but they didn't show enough combat. I'm hoping your partners do something and battles aren't just "find this one sticker to auto-win".
Lately, Paper Mario games have been more about presentation and less about making them feel fun and interactive. They've lost the challenge and uniqueness the older games had.
This just isn't impressing me yet.
Please have many unique characters and not generic toads filled to the brim.
"No Direct until August, have this though."
Looks terrific! Very nice early morning surprise!
Looks tight, can't believe they just casually announced it
@TheNewButler Oh wow. I hope this game lives up to the 1000 Year Door Status. If it does, you are in for a REAL treat.
This looks GREAT! I’m not expecting it to be like it but I absolutely loved Mario and Luigi Paper Jam, the mario and Luigi games in general, really. So I’ll be getting this, I need this in my life right now.
@Incarna so I totally missed that and had to go back and watch. Holy crap that’s a strange strange little thing there. What does it mean?! It surely must mean something. I was looking over in the garbage can and wondering if that was a clue too. Ugh anyway very cool to see nonetheless haha
Looks promising. But I'm not getting my hopes up too quickly. I'll be waiting on reviews
This is great! And it will be out pretty soon!
Interesting tidbit: this site’s first article had a Paper Mario image on it. It reminded me I really need to play one of those games at some point in time... Fifteen years later it’s about to happen!
I doubt they would have just announced this on Twitter and YouTube out of the blue if it weren't for COVID-19.
Best part of my day! This looks brilliant!A fantastic surprise announcement.
Wow! What a surprise! But... they don't show the battle system off much at all... Let's hope it is more like the old games!
I need to see more of the battle system and length to put 60€ on this one (anything shy of the first two quality is a big no for me)
@TheNewButler the N64 one is still very much playable and so much fun. Just give it a go via emulator or something.
That looks awesome and wow I'm pumped for this. Will fit perfectly on the Switch. I just hope rumors of a massive Mario 3D bundle are still true.
Yup... i'll live of porridge the next months with all these releases
well this is a pleasant surprise
Please be like the first two games. Please please please please PLEASE!
Well, there's the July game for 2020. Holy Las Vegas, I didn't expect this news.
The story looks interesting. It doesn't look like Bowser will be the final boss, which I can definitely appreciate. Hopefully they'll show some gameplay soon, cos I'm actually interested in this one!
I wonder if this is Nintendo's plan now that E3 has been cancelled, just announce games throughout the rest of Spring and Summer.
Nintendo dropping them bombs. Amazing suprise Nintendo, show the world how it's done.
TURN. BASED. BATTLES.
But, but, but... Nintendo has no more big games coming this year! 😰
If it’s not going to have the partner system and RPG style battles from the first two I’m not interested. I really hope they learned their lesson from Color Splash & Sticker Star.
Lets just hope that its nothing like the ones on 3ds or wiiU. Actually give me a reason to get in to battles instead of using them as nonsense filler. New world design, thousand year door battle and levelling mechanics.
Not a fan at all. But good for the fans.
Whaaa...?! 😮
I will wait for the next trailer about Battle System and the Summon Things (if available).
@Akurusu think were on the same wave length and posted almost tbe same time 😂
Oh hell yes!!! July? Seriously? Fantastic!!!!!
It's so damn beautiful. I love it.
When will the Super Mario 3D remastered collection be announced?
I hope it's great and not like... the last two games. And if anyone has a problem with this statement I'm allowed to say it. I played the last two games unfortunately. <(-_-)>
Happy to try the series out for the first time 😊 still hoping for a new Mario Kart though! 😁
I will instantly buy this. I love this series. I spent more hours than the game could count on The Thousand Year Door.
Maybe Metroid Prime 4 is not far away, Mario wearing Samus helmet at end of the trailer might be a hint that it’s coming soon.
Yet where are the remasters? I guess the rumors were lies.
Who shall take the Origami throne! Muahahahaha!
Great to see Nintendo taking this route instead of porting Color Splash. Looking good.
This looks like it'll be so much better than Sticker Star / Color Splash, but actually builds upon the positive and creative elements of those games nicely.
I'm on board! Just show us more of how this "ring turning" battle system works! It sounds like it takes the "attacking queues of enemies" approach from the aforementioned games and turns it around, quite literally, to add some real strategy to a battle.
I don't know what to think of it quite yet... BUT can you believe they just dropped this in the middle of nowhere? What in the world, Nintendo?! That Mini Direct was god awful, we were so news starved and had no first party news at all after that Direct. Why was this not in the Mini Direct? I understand that the virus has caused issues, but this game is releasing in July.
I have no interest in turn based battle games, but since there's not much else happening I'm tempted. Visually it looks very nice.
@Harmonie Nintendo's announcement strategy hasn't made sense in any of the 15 years I've been running this site. It's quite bizzare.
Yeah yeahs didnt know I need this till now
I am really surprised that this was not a Nintendo direct. It looks like Nintendo is trying to adopt a social media first policy under Doug bowser
Hey alright! That’s so soon too! Not really that hyped by that trailer, but surprising nonetheless
This is why I mess with Nintendo. Out of left field, now I have a new summer game to look forward to. Ah yeah.
Guess this all but confirms the rumor that this was a part of that also claimed classic 3D Mario's were being remastered for Switch as well.
By the way, this looks amazing, if the battles are truly in the classic style of the original and TTYD then this is poised to be amazing.
Those last few seconds of the trailer, how I wish for them to be hinting something else!!
I am BEYOND ready for this, I love Paper Mario and had a great time with Color Splash.
Sure, I'll bite. Got nothing else better to buy that interests me anyway.
Please have RPG elements in battles. If no EXP I quickly lose interest in all battling as it becomes meaningless to progression, and the whole game becomes a chore
#coloursplash
At first was a bit apprehensive, but the initial mistake of Origami Peach being the villain (okay either brainwashed Peach or disguised king) plus Bowser as a birthday card sidekick had me stoked. Hope this follows more like the first 3 games. Mario’s RPGs tend to be their best when the Mario vs Bowser rivalry is cast aside.
Forgive me for being a pessimist, but this feels like Sticker Star and Colour Splash, which for me is not a good thing. Why can't we just have something like the first two games again? Or hell, even something like Super Paper Mario.
The Metroid gag at the end has me hopeful that they are teasing something Metroid related will get announced soon (Metroid Prime Trilogy HD please), and the announcement itself was unexpected, and hopefully confirms the 3D mario remasters but for Origami King? Eh.
Not for me, but glad Nintendo have a solid summer release.
This looks incredible! When I saw this on Facebook, I thought it was a joke, as it came out of nowhere
YYYEEEEESSSSS!
The last part piqued my curiosity...... is it just supposed to be a Metroid joke or is it teasing for something coming soon? I mean, the speech bubble sound quite....... hinting? (probably not, but Nintendo tend to be quite unpredictable)
The game is coming soon...super soon! Super soon July!
I am throwing money at the screen but nothing is happening!
I LOVED the Metroid Easter egg.
Wow, what a pleasant surprise! I hope it's more like the Thousand Year Door than the last few games, but it does look very good nonetheless. That Metroid nod at the end has me very curious as well...
@StevenG Dear Nintendo support, your trailer doesn't support 4k $20 bills. Please help.
Well, that trailer was epic.
And that Metroid gag is pretty obviously announcing an announcement. I think Nintendo strained their eyes with all that winking.
After watching the trailer I'm just getting huge Color Splash vibes, pretty much nothing else. I sense nothing in the style of the first two games.
Expecting the worst, would love to be wrong.
The game looks incredible! I love how big some of the explorable areas look, and it looks like the signature charm of the humor from the other games is still intact.
Excellent! Nintendo wasn't lying when they said they had other unnannounced games to launch this year. Now if you may reveal a couple more....
I hope the game is as good as it looks. Am I the only one that thinks the opening is really creepy?
Looks incredibly dumb
Im going to be so hurt if this runs at 30
I'm so happy right now.
Wow this is awesome!
Yes, Yes, Yes!!!
Give us more Nintendo, please give us more. Keep these coming like this.
Nooooo
Why can't Paper Mario have actual characters any more. It's so depressing
Wonder if Nintendo would ever go the Smash Bros route with this series? In that, include paper characters from all across Nintendo IP and even other games companies, paper Sonic, Belmont, Ryu and play around with that for the combat system (could lean on project X zones combat system which was ace, but a paper Mario overworld and puzzles).
I am elated. And I don't mean to sound greedy. But it would be a nice little bonus if in the spirit of Mario RPGs they could also announce SMRPG coming to SNES NSO. Or possibly drop Paper Mario (N64) and/or TTYD? But still again, elated.
Now here's a way to start the day. Quite surprised and excited. Bring on July!
Well the initial rumours stated a "return to forum" for the franchise and I see nothing in that trailer to the contrary. I'm gonna "benefit of the doubt" this until I see a reason not to.
This is some surprising, bizarre and happy news right the f*** out of nowhere. Not only encouraging in a bubble, this announcement offers up some pretty decent hope for the rest of 2020.
English version of the trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX6DTLcWUdY
It seems weird to me that they announced it randomly here rather in the direct two months ago. If it’s coming out in July it is probably nearly finished, so they could’ve made the trailer for there instead. Probably would have saved a pretty Baden direct in my opinion, even for a mini.
The issues with easy origami are twofold.
Series is dead
This looks fantastic and seem to feel closer to the older Paper Mario games than Sticker Stars and Color Splash. My only concern is that since there's no hype for this game at all, it looks like Nintendo is just dropping this in just for the sake of having something for the Summer. It's like okay y'all want something here's something. They could had saved this for a May Direct which would had give it more buzz. Other than that hopefully the game turns out good.
That’s pretty soon too! Looks awesome!
Came really out of nowhere. But... I'm still a bit unsure about this. It seems that the world is still reduced to the standard Mario enemies and generic Toads. Also, it seems this game will once again have no partners... but the battle system looks okay, I guess. We have to see more of it.
Not the best Mario games but I enjoyed the last one so will give this a try
I’m happy. This will be great. I liked colour splash.
This looks so much better.
We’re all in for a treat.
It’s 2 months away
Day1
Xenoblade, Club 51, and now Paper Mario...best summer ever!
Not interested.
It's a shame that both Nintendo games from this year are not games I care in the slightest for.
Oh well I hope they have other surprises up their sleeves for this year or I won't get a chance to buy any Nintendo made games.
I found the trailer hilarious for how serious it was.
I never got into the series but the fact that a random Bob-omb is a party member might make me get it.
Whoa. This is an insta-buy for me - I've played the original Paper Mario and TTYD, but no others...this looks incredible. I certainly understand reservations about the battle system, but I can't see Nintendo doing anything than releasing a top-notch game based on their flagship mascot.
@KoopaTheQuick Play one of the first three (personal pick would be The Thousand Year Door, Gamecube). They are charming games with great personality and characters which aren't generic toads, with turn-based combat where you level-up like actual RPGs and get new abilities throughout the game, plus constant introduction to new partner characters who help you through your journey.
@Big_Nook,
With such a large install base, any Nintendo franchise can sell up to 3 million pieces of software, so this could do well, I mean Pikmin is a franchise that's asked for on lots of forums, but the franchise has never sold decent numbers, but on the Switch with it's games sales ratio anything is possible.
Hopefully, there's more stealth drop trailers on the way.
Hopefully this plays like the GameCube Paper Mario Thousand Year Door, I haven't been into the series since then.
@Elvie Even in the older games you had a Goomba, a Koopa, and a Yoshi as part of your party member, it's no different here.
I am so excited for this. I wonder how much nostalgia we'll all feel while playing this lol.
This looks AWESOME! Origami Peach is a villain and Folded Bowser is your ally? I wanna play it for that twist alone!
Ok, I was just doing nothing, and then it coming, and I never saw it coming, and I liked it
Yeah I was surprised by this one. Hopefully it's good.
Going to wait until I see detailed videos of the combat system before I get excited. Everything else though looks fantastic.
Whoa. You can tell a lot of energy and creativity went into this! Brill. Hmm...Reckon we will see a Mario RPG2 during the Switch's lifetime?
@AlexanderDaniels I could see a lot of generic toads in the trailer, let's just hope that Nintendo has a lot of varied designs
Fantastic .... yes ... Yes & Yessssssss !!
Origami Peach is epic! I'm trying to create right now.
@Tuulenpoika Even if this game turns out worst, the very existence of this game prove that the rumor leaks may be true and that after this HD remastered collection of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy may be on the way. Paper Mario was never to be a triple A experience to begin with.
This came out of left field. Pleasant surprise
Looks like there will be some sort of Metroid trailer incoming, would be surprised if it was Metroid prime 4 related, will probably be the original games remastered if anything, would be awesome to have these games on the go, that's why I never picked em up on the Wii U, as they would look awesome on the Switch screen.
While I like the origami theme, the character design definitely has that Sticker Star smell.
I can see this leading into paper mario for smash.
I’m still skeptical until I find out there’s a level up system. Without it combat becomes a repetitive slog.
@mesome713 Cool. You gotta believe there will be an origami book special edition or preorder bonus so that we can make our own, surely?
@Big_Nook the game or the mirror you’re looking at?
Amazing on my list. Day 1. Love Paper mario.
@Kalmaro
I've been bitten before with Paper Mario, I'll read a wide array of reviews before deciding on this one.
@Alpha008 tu madre
Read the first 30 comments. Noone mentioned the Metroid helmet.
Wtf?
But people told me nintendo didnt had anymore games after clubhouse
They purposely didn't show much of the battle system.
Always enjoy a bit of Paper Mario and this looks like another really charming entry in the series. And surely they can't just tease Metroid like that without having something on the way, right? RIGHT!?
@Big_Nook I apologise, that was a bit too rude. Sorry.
But I am super hyped for this game, even if it does look dumb to you!
I know everyone loves Directs (including me), but this shows Nintendo doesn't absolutely need one to get buzz. This was revealed an hour ago and is the top "Worldwide Trend" on Twitter. Color Splash is also in there too. They can just stealth drop an announcement like this, and it will catch like wildfire. Expect more of these.
@Franklin Yeah same, that trailer had more cinematics than gameplay.
@KoopaTheQuick no! I've loved this series since the first, ttyd was awesome, super paper mario on Wii was ok, sticker star SUCKED, I really tried to like it, started it like 3 times and just lost interest every time. Color splash was actually pretty great. People hated it without playing it cause it looked like sticker star at a glance but if you play it it's like what sticker star should have been. This looks awesome, don't hate the series cause you played sticker star that's EASILY the worst in the series!
@Alpha008 all good homie there’s plenty to like esp origami peach and her unnerving dialogue I just wish it wasn’t so paper based and tapped mostly into story and rpg roots but who knows this is only the first trailer
Here's hoping there's a bigger variety of side-characters other than Toads. That being said this looks to be a fun return to the fold.
Why are so many people bitching about this?
The trailer looks insanely good, a proper update to Thousand Year Door with all of the same humour and crazy takes on the Mushroom Kingdom. And the idea of having the villains being origami, which is effectively 3D paper, is brilliant.
I'm so excited for this already. Almost certainly going to get it day one.
@BenAV or anyone else: Hi I'm ignorant! Is this a brand new Paper Mario game? (I don't know paper mario games)
Well that was a pleasant surprise...I get a feeling this is how they're going to be dropping titles during this period.
@DevlinMandrake some people are only happy when they're crying. They're the ones who say "give us some info Nintendo!!!!?!?!?!?!", and as soon as Nintendo drop something it's not what they want. Ungrateful sods.
Not really into the origami style. Immediately seeing what seems to be a fake peach, I cringed. I'll need to see more to get a better understanding
At the very least, exploration looks like it could be fun. But pretty much everything else looked nothing like what made the 1st 2 games fun
Gorgeous game, but I'll be waiting on reviews before picking it up. Sticker Star/Color Splash have made me a bit weary of newer games in this franchise.
I do like how exploratory it looks, though. Exploration is one of the (very few) downsides of The Thousand Year Door. Now if they can just get the writing up to snuff...
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!
The end of the vid made it look like it was part of a direct. I wonder if they cancelled one due to all the uncertainty
@WiltonRoots,
So true, please announce a new paper Mario game, please, then they announce one and.....I don't like it Nintendo, just can't please some people.
@Kalmaro Not to mention the lack of partners
Nice! Been waiting for a new one since I finished Color Splash way back when... and if this turned out to be true, I sure hope Mario All Stars 2 is also coming shortly.
@WoomyNNYes Yep, brand new game.
Nintendo, you've done it again. standing ovation as a tear rolls down my left eye
So this is why it's a good year for Italian plumbers! I haven't played any of the Paper Mario games over the years, but this looks like quite a deep and adorable adventure. I'll be preordering the cartridge to enjoy with the kids this summer!
Thank you Nintendo!!
Post combat or GTFO lol
No, but seriously, let's see if they learned their lesson.
I've played only Super Paper Mario, years and years ago. This... Looks gorgeous.
Eh. It just doesn’t look as good as the first 2 or even SPM. With this many duds they should just remaster the original trilogy.
I was going to wait until Metroid Prime 4 is released to buy a Switch, but this looks irresistible to me and my wallet.
Love this, over the past week:
Microsoft: Here is some next gen "gameplay".
Sony: Got that beat, here is some actual next gen footage but it is a tech demo.
Nintendo: Here is a brand new gorgeous looking game avaiable in two months. Mic drop.
Lesson? Real actual games sell consoles, not fancy edited in engine trailers or tech demos.
fantastic!!! it seems to have a lot of variety in gameplay which is always a good thing!
@mesome713 huge fanboy alert....
@Ooccoo_Jr I hope so, would be amazing to make these Origami figures.
I'm cautiously optimistic, the trailer looked like it had partners at some points.
It's quite infuriating how the last few games have been duds, I really hope Nintendo have finally listened and have dropped all the silly gimmicks (like limited numbers of stickers) and have just gone for something in the vein of TTYD.
@TheFullAndy C’mon dude. This isn’t a console seller. The fact it’s come from nowhere, and is releasing so soon could be a warning flag (hoping it’s not)
Looks more Colour Splash than 1000 Year Door as well, and we all know how poorly Colour Splash was received. Surely you should have more trepidation.
“Or am I origami? Folded up and just pretend. Demented as the motives in your head.” Sorry,, couldn’t help myself. :3 Can’t wait for July, I love me some Paper Mario!
@BulkSlash from IGN - “ There will also be a new ring-based battle system that requires both "puzzle-solving skills and a quick wit."
So, in reply to your comment, I’m not entirely sure we’ll be seeing a return to form. Hope to be proven wrong.
I'm cautiously pessimistic.
I didn't even mind Color Splash's card-based combat, but I was wondering why on earth if all it does for you is give you more cards to fight more. So I skipped every opportunity to combat.
@andyc777
My point is more in relation to Microsoft and Sony farting about and not just showing proper games whilst Nintendo can just drop this out of nowhere.
Hopefully S & M show some real stuff soon.
Is ARLO awake yet? Lol
Remember, the problem is that Sticker Star and Color Splash were legitimately BAD RPGs with pointless combat systems and poor, lazy game design.
You can still have "gimmicks" and be a great game though.
Super Paper Mario was an example of how to do something different with the series and still be awesome.
Paper Mario itself was a follow-up to Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars on SNES and was very different from that game but still awesome and another classic.
@citizenerased better than being overly optimistic! I didn’t hate Colour Splash (some of the writing was really damn funny), but the dull, unoriginal NPCs and combat system were big turn offs. Not sure they’ve learned their lesson - nothing on the trailer suggests new memorable characters, and IGN described the battle system as “ There will also be a new ring-based battle system that requires both "puzzle-solving skills and a quick wit."
@Impaler-D that, and a forgettable cast of characters. Surely Nintendo realise that they need to put more effort into the ensemble this time around, but haven’t seen much to suggest otherwise from the trailer - typical goomba, koopa troopa, shy guys etc as the enemies. Yawn.
The end of this trailer reminds me...
A new 2D Metroid was leaked/rumored months ago, along with a new Paper Mario.
Could they be hinting at an incoming announcement of 2D Metroid, likely from the developer of Samus Returns, Mercury Steam?
@TheFullAndy absolutely. The Microsoft third party reel was dull. And while the Unreal 5 engine looks fantastic, it’s (as you said) a tech demo. Although to be fair, that one wasn’t on Sony as it wasn’t them that dropped the trailer yesterday.
@Impaler-D And while we’re on a similar topic of rumoured/leaked games, whatever happened to Pikmin 4? It was ‘very close to completion’ in September 2015, then nothing...
I always find the Paper Mario games to be kind of boring. But I think this trailer looks exciting and I think this is a great announcement out of nowhere.
@andyc777
Sony would defintiely have been involved in that, was a nice wee dig at Microsoft after last week without Sony apparently doing anything, they are still the masters of console marketing.
But I want to see their first party line ups first and foremost, considering how incredible the like of God of War still look, I can just imagine what a PS5 exclusive looks like.....
My favourite game series so for me I'll be counting the days to release
@gcunit @Impaler-D Looks like they are hinting at a VR Metroid game. Metroid for Labo VR perhaps?
@TheFullAndy the wait for proper next gen reveals has seemed to have gone on for a bit longer than a lot of us were expecting, here’s hoping Sony and Microsoft both pull their fingers out soon - I know Microsoft said they’ll show off first party games in June or July but after last weeks reveal, I’m not anticipating anything jaw dropping.
Yes, looks like I have to play something soon (other then my back catalogue). However, it looks again like we get generic characters, and no sidekicks in battle. Oh, and they changed the battle system? That could either work, or not. The rest looks nice, like always. There's a new villain. And the peeling mechanic reminds me of Stick it to the man. I am sure it will be fun, but might be AGAIN not what the majority wants.
That Metroid teaser though: Metroid prime 4 revealed next?
@retro_player_77 Eh? Not necessarily. I mean, it’s odd that there’s a nod to Metroid in the trailer, but can’t ever recall a time where Nintendo has plugged an up and coming game in another of its titles.
Might just be that there’s a homage to Nintendo IPs in the game - we might see origami ‘helmets’ showing other Nintendo franchises. No idea what use they’d have being in the game, but we won’t have to wait much longer...
This seems interesting. But the art suggests it'll be another Toad fest. Guess we wait and see
@Henmii reckon the next big reveal will be the rumoured All Stars 2, which I’d totally be happy with!
Not entirely sure how much production would have been done on Prime 4 with them ripping it up and starting from scratch, but can’t wait to see more - imagine them unveiling Prime 4 and to keep fans ticking over until release date they announce a remastered Prime Trilogy to release before then...
@andyc777
Yep and to be frank, i am not that fussed with what Microsoft have to reveal, their decision to hold back the potential of their next gen games by insisting they release even on the Xbox One means I doubt I will be impressed with what they have to offer. I really believe Microsoft has already lost the next gen fight because of their approach.
I do trust Sony will have some PS5 exclusives lined up though that will blow me away. Can't wait!
@andyc777 Well seeing Mario wearing a Samus headset pretending to play Metroid in virtual reality seems like a hint at a Metroid VR to me but I could be wrong.
@TheFullAndy It’s all huff and puff with Microsoft. ‘Most powerful console’ brags mean nothing when there are only a handful of decent exclusives available.
@andyc777 Well, I saw a video analyzing Miyamoto's statements on Pikmin 4 and it turns out he was probably talking about "Hey! Pikmin" at the time.
He has said Pikmin 4 is in development though.
Pikmin has always been his pet project, he's probably taking his time on it.
Looks like fun. I wish the Mario RPG entry on the Wii got more love. I thought it was one of the best games of that era.
This game looks absolutely fantastic! I can’t wait to see more, especially the turn based mechanics. Regardless, this is a day one purchase for me.
Happy this is coming out. But like Yoshi Wolly world I wish colour splash wouldn't die on the Wii u. I get some people didn't like it but that doesn't mean others wouldn't like the option.
Super hesitant about this. Good Paper Mario is awesome, but there hasn't been a good Paper Mario IMO for over 15 years.
@retro_player_77 Won’t have much longer to wait to find out! The Labo side of things has completely quietened down, and with the Switch Lite on the market now, not sure how much they’d promote VR on the Switch now, seeing as they’d have to release an additional headset to accommodate the Lite models.
Screenshots look georgous, and not long till it's released.... This will keep the Switch pushing along through the summer..
@Impaler-D think it falls in the second tier of Nintendo IPs where diehard fans would love to see a new title in the series, but sales figures point elsewhere - would lump F-Zero & Starfox in the same bracket..
@Kalmaro "They've lost the challenge and uniqueness the older games had."
I stopped playing "Colour Splash" at the 2nd set of matching card games. The first set was I believe guessing 3 out of 5 correctly, the 2nd time around was 5 out of 5 and I could never get them all correct so I simply stopped playing. I know that's not the kind of "challenge' you mean, but it was unique, a bit too unique for me unfortunately. I really did enjoy the game up to that point, but sadly could go no further.
Thousand Year Door was and is the best in the series, and I've played them all except Sticker Star b/c 3DS, so I am looking forward to this 1. My birthday is the 20th so this may be my gift.
@andyc777
The only exclusive game I rated on Xbox One was Killer Instinct, but it wasn't enough so it got sold early on and it has been PS4 and Switch ever since. Perfect combo of great exclusives and third party options.
Also doesn't help Microsoft that with the exception of Forza, the sequels to their biggest exclusives Halo and Gears has been a serious case of diminishing returns. The fact Switch has apparently already outsold the Xbox One family of systems shows how poor Microsift has done this gen and very likely next gen.
But they may spring a surprise in July! Doubtful.
it looked amazing, but watching the trailer more just filled me with dread. it just looks like a CS sequel, no partners, and the CS battle system returning. its sad that this is the direction they wanna keep the series in now
I am actually really excited about this. I enjoy the RPG style of the first two games, but if the writing is good and the world is fun to explore I think that it will still be a really good game. Positively optimistic for the battle system.
@johnvboy Reminds me of little kids when they're hungry and want a sammich, you make them one, and they get all stroppy and say no I want mummy to make it.
Well, if that wasn’t one hell of a Metroid tease at the end...
This looks amazing! Awesome that it launches soon, too. Nintendo nailed the “surprise and delight” on this one.
Woah, this literally came out of nowhere. This looks a lot better than Sticker Star that’s for sure. Looking forward to it. It also looks gorgeous as well.
@boxyguy think the biggest worry is how unexpected this was - trailer revealed from nowhere and the game is out in two months; seems to me like it could of been a fairly rushed production to fill a gap in the schedule. Hoping I’m completely wrong, but looks a lot more Colour Splash than 1000 Year Door so far.
@andyc777,
I am not waiting for All stars 2 since I have played all those games before. And I don't think it will happen anyway.
Excellent! Anyone think the Samus helmet at the end is hinting Metroid 4 will be LaboVR compatible?
@andyc777 I'm just hoping it's not Metroid Prime 4 that get the VR treatment. Like everyone else I hope it's a hint at a new 2D Metroid, maybe a true Metroid 5.
@Henmii PLENTY of people (myself included) would love remastered versions of 64, Sunshine, and the two Galaxy games. And we see remasters all the time - hell Xenoblade Chronicles remaster is out at the end of this month.
Just because YOU don’t want it, doesn’t mean the general public don’t. It would sell millions...
@retro_player_77 can’t see Prime 4 getting VR - I mean, as novel as the VR Labo kit is, it was more miss than hit for me as a graphical spectacle. Making the kit and playing the mini games was a good way to kill the time, and occasionally play it for brief periods..
That came out of left field. I like the premise and will definitely keep an eye out for this one! It's releasing not too far into the future as well.
I intend to play the full series minus a certain 3DS game. So far I've played Color Splash (Fairly decent, funny writing, yet flawed battle system) and Super Paper Mario (loved it!). I can easily grab the original on the Wii U VC, which only leaves me without a way of playing TTYD until further notice....
This is a big announcement and im ecstatic about it!
@munstahunta more likely to be Metroid Prime Trilogy remaster.
This game is gonna sell like crazy. We haven't had a Mario game in forever. Can't wait for this, and not along time to wait either. Genius reveal Nintendo.
@retro_player_77 Well, at least there's that. I'd be very much down with an HD version of Galaxy.
@Kalmaro I was hyped until I saw the combat system. Everything else looks great though.
Well once I woke up about 20 minutes, listening to YouTube music on YouTube and saw this, and I was like, "Did they really just drop a Paper Mario game announcement just like that?" And I saw this on various articles and I was then like "Yes, they did!" But sucks for my wallet because I have no job to pay for this now. I have to wait till August-September to work my way back to paying for things. Sucks, but what can ya do?
Previously rumored as a part of the year-of-Mario leak a few weeks ago. Still, it's awesome to have it officially announced. Pretty hype.
Something tells me, whatever mind-blowing E3 reveals they had planned will just be scattered with surprise announcements like this one over the next few weeks/months. It's nit their usual approach, but times are weird and if they wanted to try out a new strategy, this is the time to do it.
@WiltonRoots,
Story of my life fella, although I must admit mothers sandwiches taste much better.
It’s another what I consider a spin-off. Noting like the first 2 games
@Desrever
Agreed. I think we’re gonna get little trickles of info like this for the foreseeable future.
@retro_player_77 Metroid Prime Trilogy release with VR supported would be pretty effing exciting...
Nope. Ain't falling for it. It's a trap. After the let down that was sticker star, and never touching color splash, I refuse to buy any paper Mario game they doesn't AT LEAST follow the charm, battle system, and variety that was thousand years door. I saw the humor, it made me chuckle but I'm not falling for the bait Nintendo! I withhold my 60 dollars until I hear universal praise from all the outlets!!!
Wasn't this one of the rumours connected with the expected Mario remasters? Pretty sure I heard "...and there will also be a Paper Mario". Just confused why so many people think this is sooo out the blue when we knew (or at least suspected) it was coming.
Looks awesome, and I cannot wait to give Nintendo my money : )
@andyc777 In Color Splash I had no idea why I would even battle enemies anymore. They just dropped more cards to do more battles, etc etc. I started avoiding battles altogether. I got to the bit with the timed haunted mansion, where I failed to do all the tasks I needed to do in 30 minutes so the game reset my entire progress. I then closed the game, I couldn't believe they actually put that in a game: a required timed quest that the game doesn't tell you about.
@mesome713 @citizenerased Paper Mario sold 4 million units on the Wii. A console that sold over 100 million units. What makes you think this will sell like hot cakes, other than the fact you’re completely blinded by how much of a fanboy you are?
@Kalmaro You and I are in complete agreement there man.
@citizenerased it was beyond tedious, wasn’t it? At least we know it won’t be as drawn out this time, without the Wii U game pad being used as a gimmick in battle mechanics. But still - apprehensive about this one. Hope they’ve learned their lessons from the last few games....
@johnvboy Well Animal Crossing and Pokemon set the bar high, the Paper Mario obsessives want to prove that they can kick off just as much as they can...oh boy if there's one hair out of place on Samus...I think we'll be looking at a 600 comment bloodbath.
@retro_player_77 I'm aware of such characters but they don't appeal to me as much as a Bob-omb party member.
It's a Mario element that is thought of more often as an item or weapon rather than a character and that's what makes it funny to me.
Edit: Just here to emphasize the "thought of more often as an item or weapon rather than a character" part. I'm not saying there hasn't been anthropomorphic depictions of Bob-ombs in the past like in Super Mario 64, I'm saying that they're generally not shown this way. What makes it even funnier is how this Bob-omb is portrayed as a survivor of an apocalyptic level event. It came off in a way that reminds me of zombie films when an outbreak or whatever had just begun.
Another retail game to add to my ever growing Switch library.
I think i just had a heart attack
Wasn't Paper Mario included in that speculation about the 3D Mario remasters?
Nice! The only PM game I've played is Sticker Star and that one was a disappointment. But I've heard so much good things about earlier games in the series. Hope this turns out fine. Looks great graphically speaking!
Paper Mario is extending his ARMs?
Calling it now: The smash bros announcement for an ARMs character is a fake out. Origami Paper Mario is the newcomer we're getting this Summer.
I will defend color splash's honor till the day I die! Guess now that we have this game color splash will be lost on wiiu forever
I also see with pleasure, that this time we'll have Mario and Bowser teaming up against the new villain. It's been a while since this didn't happened (since Super Paper Mario to be precised. Bowser Inside Story doesn't count because even thought they both fought Fawful, they did it each on their own, without properly teaming up).
@Moonlessky one of only a handful of true Wii U exclusives if that’s the case! Selfishly, I’m happy with that - don’t mind games ported over to the Switch, but when they do and include new modes (proper battle mode in MK8 Deluxe), new characters (Pokken), and new stages (Captain Toad), it feels like a bit of a kick in the teeth for me personally, as I supported the Wii U through it’s lifecycle, brought the games and now have ‘inferior’ versions of the Switch counterparts.
Great news. Out of the blue bombshell from the mighty N!
@andyc777 4million is amazing. This one will sell 5 million thiugh, it's the best one. Plus nothing else to play for the summer, this game is perfection.
What a wonderful surprise. Now I just need to bump up Color Splash in my backlog in preparation for this.
Today is a good day
Yes, we get it, you don't like Sticker Star or Color Splash. Now can we just talk about what we do know about this one please?
This is wonderful news! Tell me there's no stickers or cards...pleeeeease!
@Henmii And why do you think the rumor about the remakes/remasters is fake... THIS PAPER MARIO GAME was part of the same rumor being reported on by the same people lol...
Also Emily Rogers (a very well known leaker) confirmed it on Twitter: https://nintendosoup.com/emily-rogers-hints-whats-coming-to-nintendo-switch-this-year/
....At least I don't see a bunch of Toads everywhere. >.>
@mesome713 if the game gets the same treatment as Colour Splash it won’t push anything like those numbers. For comparisons sake, Mario Maker 2 hasn’t pushed the 6 million barrier yet. So how you’re assuming this will come close to those numbers is frankly bewildering.
@andyc777 Color Splash was amazing, best looking game on Wii U. And this one looks way better. Preloading asap.
Princess Peach joining the Borg sold me instantly on this.
@DStanton “I don’t want this game as I’ve played the games before. Therefore I think the rumours are false” seems to be the logic.
@Low Same here, evil Princess Peach equals sold.
Well this is a nice surprise! Potentially brilliant news, as long as it’s good of course.
@andyc777
This:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Nintendo_Switch_video_games
... and this:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Wii_video_games
Just compare the sales numbers and you should see, why it could easily sell more on Switch. 🤷♂️
Looks beautiful but I’m not totally on board until we know more about the battle system and characters.
Maybe this is the new model? Say nothing about any game until it's 2-3 months away from being released.
First glance - awesome
will need to see more to make decision
love the visuals, don't have a good view of battles
"partners" seem to be bowser (paper) and sister of bad guy
was hoping for the traditional partners, not like everything after ttyd
cute metroid reference at end
@Kalmaro i could be wrong but from the one turn preview alone:
Gimmick seen to imply monsters coming from multiple directions, thus "rearranging " the arena to line up attack.
The battle menu showed only a single boots or hammer item and saw space for more... but not enough a full deck of 50+ cards. Could that means a return of "default" repeatable hammer/jump(perhaps even gear judging by those "shiny bootss" ) options alongside potential skill badge equips?
Partners aren't much visible in combat yet but are clearly present in some form in the overworld...
A post-card Bowser only able to talk is the perfect size to carry about everywhere and bring back the return of environment/combat tattles? And would be hilarious if it proves to be that Bowser become our own portable "Bowserpedia"(for lack of better nickname)?
Literally the more I look at it the more I wonder if what i'm seeing is "Color Splash on the outside, TTYD where it matters"?
As "TTYD style battles but enemies come from multiple directions in battle" is something I could deal with I think...
I mean, it could hint at classic mechanics but indeed more 3D "depth" so to speak
@MrBlacky BS. Links Awakening - 87/100 on Metacritic, one of Nintendo’s most beloved IPs - 4.38m sold. Mario Maker 2 - highly acclaimed, 88/100 on Metacritic - 5.48m sold.
We haven’t had a classic Paper Mario since 1000 Year Door, and unless this comes with masses of acclaim (and lets be honest, it’s looking more like Colour Splash than 1000 Year Door) it’s not pushing those kind of numbers. Truth be told, the Paper Mario series isn’t a big seller.
@Harmonie "I understand that virus has caused issues" might be your answer right there.
@MrBlacky the Mario and Luigi games (all seven, including 3DS remakes) have lifetime sales of 12m.
12m over consoles such as the DS which had lifetime sales over all its incarnations of about 150m. And you still think this is a popular series of games that every Switch owner will buy?
Leave your bias behind you - it’s not good for the gaming community.
@sup3Rmint hoping it’s decent, but on the fence over what’s been shown (cautious owing to the last couple of games) Will pick this up to add to the collection doubtlessly, but can see it being a 7 out of 10 kind of game..
@Ludovsky One can dream. Too me it looks like they'll just help in the overworld.
Bowser is best sidekick, who needs evil Luigi.
@andyc777 the battle system look odd at first but at closer look may look closer to classic games.
Cards seem to be gone now. Default hammer/jump action seem back and the action UI seem the perfect size to add badge skills again but not large enough for the mess that was browsing through a deck of 50+ cards to find the "right" card.
If this proves to be "Thousand years Door but enemies come from multiple directions at once"-style... I think I could deal with that.
Some characters seem generic but there seem to be clear reccuring "helpers" I see a bob-omb who seem to be implied to be following Mario around in multiple sequences now almost as if a follower. Kamek/Bowser Jr. seem to be here as clear supporters as well.
And postcard-Bowser is the perfect size to carry around while limiting him to only being able to speak seem the perfect excuse to bring tattles back to the game in full.
@Ludovsky all they have to do is nail three things in my opinion - memorable NPCs, decent battle system, and good story. The visuals look great and the writing in the series is usually top notch. Hopefully they can iron out the faults from Colour Splash and give us a memorable game..
@Kalmaro which would still be a step up from Color Splash if you asks me considering partners skills back in the days in exploration and a step up from depending on expendable cards/stickers.
And we only saw the one single turn of battle so we don't know if there could still be a partner switch in battle or something.
More importantly one thing i'm curious about is that it seems like multiples towns might make a return at least.
Looks cool and gorgeous, that said i hope its not another one of those way to easy typical Nintendo games. Yoshi's latest game was an utter snore.
@mesome713 I will so be there for it if postcard-Bowser is our new source of environment/battle tattles because Bowser-as-portable/helpless-Bowserpedia could feature some glorious lines of dialogue humor I feel
@sup3Rmint if the battle systems proves "TTYD style with enemies coming from all 360 degrees directions" as i'm starting to suspect... I think i'll be there for it.
@FrowningCoach that’s the Yoshi series all over. Personally, I really enjoyed Crafted World - most of the levels brought in new mechanics that kept it feeling fresh, and trying to find all the collectibles was challenging.
Similarity, one of my favourite Wii games is Kirbys Epic Yarn - extremely easy but calming to play and extremely charming. Sometimes it’s nice to have a game that doesn’t make you want to throw your controller at the wall - a change of pace is welcomed some times!
@andyc777 agreed. I actually liked Color Splash more than I thought I would. This is something I might eventually get, but far from a must have. Granted, I usually end up getting stuff like this sooner than I anticipate.
The main thing I like about this is that Nintendo is true to form and their word. I hope this is a sign of better things to come.
And here I was hoping for a classic PM revival after M&L ended. I'm disappointed.
Why was this not announced in the Nintendo Direct?
They could have used a little more news
@rockodoodle Visually, Colour Splash was really vibrant and quite a pretty game. The writing made me laugh on several occasions too. What let it down for me was the lack of imagination with the cast of characters and the tedious battle system. If Nintendo have listened to the critics of Colour Splash, hopefully both of those are rectified.
That is awesome, something to look for in the future. I only played TTYD and missed color splash on wii u, so I'm really looking forward to this one.
Also, this announcement means that the mario collection is true since both were leaked together.
@MegaMari0 I could be wrong but the more I look at this game, the more one of the impressions i'm starting to get might be summed up as...
"Color Splash on the cover, Thousand Years Door in the pages"?
They're not visible in combat yet, but partners seem to be making a clear return in the overworld(return of their exploration skills)?
The game seem to feature RPG style world map.
Battle seem to hint at a return of (TTYD-style?) audience complete with a "cheer" command.
Deck of cards seem to be gone in favor of a return of traditional action menu? Classic repeatable jumpshoes/hammer seem back and the menu seem definitely too small to browse 50+ single use cards... but the perfect size to add a customized to set of badge skills again.
Which... if it's the case, "TTYD style battles but enemies can come from multiple directions for area targeting moves" is a style I think I could go with. Much more strategic and fair than "hope you brought the right single use card to the fight" of Color Splash.
The use of "shiny boots" rather than a specialized move like "line jump" in a fight seem to perhaps even hint at a Lite form of rpg gear rather than a single-use card which perhaps could mean a return of equipment shops? Towns locations seem much more present(perhaps even numerous?) than Color Splash anyway .
I'm tentatively optimistic about this. Like said it feels "Color Splash on the cover, but classic-style in the pages" the more I look at it.
One down......four to go.
@andyc777 perhaps i'll eat crow later but I have an odd feeling they might be managing just that. Or at least i'm giving them the benefit of doubt. There's a lot that indirectly reminds me of older style games in there.
@Ludovsky here’s hoping we get a game that’s more true to form - I’m slightly cautious given the fact it’s come out of nowhere, yet is releasing very soon (short production process perhaps?) and the recent games in the series have been more miss than hit.
Either way - won’t have too much longer to wait to see how it’s received across the board. Xenoblade Chronicles to keep me going until then.
@andyc777,
I know the demand is there, its just that I don't think Nintendo will remaster all 3D games AND put them on one cart. They much rather release them seperately on the e-shop, and maybe not even remastered. And all at full price.
@andyc777 if memory serves me correctly, Color Splash was one of the last titles for the Wii U. It would not surprise me if Nintendo mailed it in and focused on other efforts for the Switch, somewhat like they did with the WiiU Mario Tennis.
Eyy, now we’re talking. Nintendo finally opened their mouth and announced a first party game! Looks pretty neat too, I’ve never really played Paper Mario, but I’ve been looking too and this game seems like it could be good. Either way, I can rest easy now knowing the games are still coming this year.
@DStanton,
But that doesn't prove anything. Its just a rumor. And anybody could have predicted that sooner or later there would be a Paper Mario on Switch.
My Ignore list is growing quickly with topics like these.
I think the game looks interesting, the ring battle system is different, but I feel it could be something great. Also the visuals and story already feel like a must buy.
@NerdyBoutKirby it looks like Color Splash on the cover but a lot in the details remind me of more RPG mario games.
RPG-style world map?
Cards seem to be gone and 'default' hammer/jump attacks seem to be back(and can be upgraded by the sounds of the "shiny boots" action, so perhaps even a return of equipment? ).
Partners aren't visible in combat(yet) but multiple companions seem to be visible in many scenes and overworld sequence.
Audience (TTYD-style?) seem to be back in the battle screens complete with a visible "Cheer" command(bringing back the mechanic of wooing the audience for perks?).
The more I look at this the more the feeling I get can be summed as "Color Splash on the cover, classic in the pages"?
As, if my hunch about combat mechanics prove right, "Thousand Years Door combat but enemies come from multiple directions on a 360 degree axis you can rearrange" is a twist I could go with I think.
@sanderev yeah.
Rather than "more color splash", the fact cards seem to be gone gone me the feeling we might be looking at "Thousand Years Doors-style but enemies come from multiple directions on a 360 degrees axis you can rearrange" and that's a style I could go with if i'm right.
Also i'm looking at the battle preview again and though Mario is the clear center of the arena... the circle he's standing in is not only unusually large for just him to stand in alone but might just be large enough to actually house companions alongside him in battle???
@Ludovsky don't do this to me. Don't give me hope 🤣😆
@andyc777 the sudden reveal I think has less to with the game and more... 2020 and COVID in general?
There's already rumor that COVID is behind a possible cancellation of a previously planned June Direct and this may well be proof of this in the end I feel.
@MegaMari0 mind you I don't expect a FULL return to classic norms. HP seem very... color splashy?
But then again partners in classic games were upgraded through using hidden shine sprites rather than battle XP so applying such a mechanic to Mario himself isn't that much of a stretch and could still remain enjoyable if classic skills systems make a return in the new battle style.
After all it's be a nice of ensuring that though player might not be over-levelled for a challenge, they might not be under-levelled either.
And "shiny boots" from the trailer sounds more like "standard jump attack with better boots equipped" than something like "single use specialized Line Jump card".... and towns seem more prevalent again so perhaps there could be a return of items/gear shops?
Why the hell didnt they put this in the direct??? Instead of dropping this out of no where.
What is wrong with the advertising team in Nintendo
Just another reason why I love Nintendo! They excel at making fun video game experiences devoid of PC nonsense. Well done Nintendo. I shudder to think about what the video game landscape would look like without Nintendo.
The trailer looks intriguing enough, I'll definitely be picking it up.
@MrBlacky you’re changing the goalposts to fit your argument. There’s no rhyme or reason behind comparing the two consoles. Mario Bros Wii sold 30 million units out of a 100 million user base - i.e a 30% attach rate. New Super Mario Bros U has sold 6.6 million units so far on a console with a 52 million user base - an attachment rate of 12%.
Mario Kart Wii wold 37 million units versus 25 million units sold of MK8 Deluxe, meaning the attachment rate between the two is 37% and 48% in the Switches favour.
There is NO suggestion to say this will sell more than 4 million units. You’re basing assumptions of a series that typically doesn’t sell too great on a two minute trailer reveal. Mario and Rabbids has sold 2 million copies on the Switch, and DKC Tropical Freeze has sold 2.25 million. You’re expecting the game to sell double what both of these titles have, despite the series not being one of Nintendo’s strongest franchises.
@MrBlacky I strongly suggest you stop swearing at me when all I’m doing is trying to prove logical points. It MAY sell more than Paper Mario, but then again it might not. It needs decent marketing and good reviews for it to happen.
We all want it to be a good game, but it’s pretty foolish suggesting a series that traditionally hasn’t sold well over the years, and who’s past two titles have been poor will sell really well.
Taking a page from Tearaway. Looks great and kudos to Nintendo to announce a big game only two months ahead of launch.
Looks great, and only two months away!
This reminds me I got to finish Color splash and the Gamecube one. So many games in the backlog
Cool. I never managed to find the Paper Mario series for the 3DS and U locally. Maybe I'll get a chance at this.
Origami King looks charming and delightful!
Love the fantasy RPG aesthetic with all cozy and no melodrama. When I'm in the mood for this kind of RPG, the alternatives usually swing too far on the pendulum for my tastes. The feel of this game hits just the right spot.
This and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon would pair very nicely together as a dual-purchase.
@MrBlacky your very first comment provided links between the best selling Switch games to the best selling Wii games and you tried to make out that the same franchises on the Switch sell better than those on the Wii. I provided examples proving that this isn’t necessarily the case, and you flew into a hissy fit when I did this.
Please don’t question my memory when YOU brought it up in the first instance.
Sheesh. Some people.
"While the enemies may be crafted from paper, these dynamic, turn-based battles are far from stationary."
Give this copywriter a raise, Nintendo!
Oh, what is that? It looks like indie game with weird design. All characters looks horrible They even can't talk. And it still costs 60$? Sorry, but I gonna play in Ghost of Tsushima in July.
I'm stoked for this
@Henmii it depends.
If Mario 64 is involved, that one would clearly get remastered.
Mario Sunshine Galaxy? Those can be kept mostly 'as is' with just a textures and lighting touch-up like Wind Waker I suspect which might not need THAT much effort of that project had been cooking since a bit.
And with the most recent dating beak top 13 years ago in 2007... honestly a bundled collection might not be TOO much of a stretch even if it still feels like somewhat of a stretch to get three such games together even for the 35th anniversary.
I really want this to be good, but I’ve been burnt more times than not with paper Mario. The first two games were some of my favorites but everything past that sorely missed the mark.
@Anvold
I can tell you're a Ride to Hell: Retribution kind of guy. The graphics are beautifully standard, realistic graphics. The characters talk to each other about how much they love to have SEX and love to SWEAR and other non-KIDDY things.
The gameplay is- never mind- who cares about gameplay?
GOTY
am i the only one who is just thinking "this looks amazing! but if this and lego mario were confirmed..."
THE REMASTER RUMORS HAVE TO BE TRUE!
What about the rumoured Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy remasters or remakes? That's the only thing I can think of.
So visually it's very beautiful and the combat wheel thingy does look intriguing. But the core heart of the first 2 is missing. Aside from a few puns and the visual skin, it's not Paper Mario, it's Mario. Yeah stuff is made from paper and yeah there are some mechanics based around paper, but the heart and soul of the Paper Mario world isn't there.
That could just be regular Mario in the regular Mushroom Kingdom with the plot being an origami king is turning regular Mario characters and locations into origami-based mischief.
Paper Mario felt like it's own world, it was so fleshed out and different. It had unique locations, unique characters and the Mushroom Kingdom denizens were not copy-paste versions of each other. You didn't just have a Goomba on your team you had Goombella or Goombario. You had Koops not just a regular Koopa Troopa, Admiral Bobbery not just a standard Bob-omb. They looked and acted like individuals because they were. And the world was filled with these unique and utterly charming characters. Even just background characters felt like they had a story to tell, just by looking a them. There was a Pianta Mafia!
Now all we get is Toads. If we're lucky enough to get a non-toad it'll be some other pre-existing Mario character looking no different to how you've seen them in other Mario games, except maybe flat.
I really hope I'm wrong but everything I see here, just points to the same disappointing things again. Just look at the crowds in the backgrounds, all Toads. Ironically Mario Odyssey had more of Paper Mario's core than the last few Paper Mario games.
Look, nobody can take away from this game that it looks visually stunning, but the "shiny boots" attack has me fearing they've gone with a disposable item based battle system again, considering I don't see any FP either.
Now, I'm not of the opinion that every Paper Mario game need to be Thousand Year Door, but every disposable item based combat system Mario games have tried have ended up being terrible, so I don't know why they keep trying it.
@antdickens ive enjoyed thier marketing strategies as of late where they just drop a trailer and say itll be out in a month or two/three.
@codyf it’s certainly keeping us on our toes, it’s fun but hard to predict
Played all the games, and I don't like the fact they returned to the sticker aesthetic. Sure, some of the scenes look nice, but they lack the timeless quality of 64 and TTYD.
They can't just keep leaning on something from eight years ago. Either tear it down, or make it look like the first two games in HD for the fandom.
I was hoping "return to form" meant also the art style would take inspiration from the 64 and GameCube entries.
I feel like Nintendo purposely left out details about how the battling worked for fear that it would work against the initial reaction. The Color Splash reveal laid it all out there, so the downvotes came in like a storm because we all knew what it was going to be. Still played the game, granted, I was disappointed with the purchase other than the quality of writing which has remained intact throughout the whole series.
So yeah, I'm very conflicted with this trailer and definitely not over the moon for it. Ultimately, I need more details.
@DarkKirby I'm of the opinion that the game looks nice, but the art style is not nearly as timeless as 64 and TTYD. Which is why I wished they ditched the whole sticker look altogether. Even the snippet of the battle system in the trailer (although there is much still to be seen) seems a bit stiff and less fluid than the two best games in the series.
Don't get me wrong though, the game has potential. But this was not the direction visually I wanted to see.
@ChromaticDracula Yeah the garbage can is definitely moving so I wonder if it represents the fact that they threw out the old ideas for Metroid Prime 4 which caused the delay in it being released. Does have me curious why that's in the trailer, I didn't notice until you'd mentioned it.
I know this is such a first world problem, but I really miss the Direct. I am glad that Nintendo tossed us a bone, but I like them lining these reveals up and just spending 30 minutes going one right after another.
With this reveal, it feels like that this will be the Nintendo-norm throughout this time period. I know it doesn't matter in the vast scheme of things, but I really did enjoy this time of the year for the Directs.
@Ogbert Thank you for that beautiful summation. Really gets to the root of what makes the series so special. All my favorite Mario characters are exclusively Paper Mario characters!
@mesome713 “We haven’t had a Mario game in forever.”
...bruh what are you talking about? Super Mario Maker 2 released last year. That’s not a Mario game to you?
@SpicyBurrito16 That different though, I was talking a Mario story game.
I just never got into these. Can someone explain to me the appeal/target audience or the "Paper Mario" series? What sets these games apart?
What if those are hoard battles and the bosses have a more traditional style?
@Toy_Link gameplay? It's standart Paper Mario, a casual RPG with weird design. If graphics is bad, that doesn't mean, that gameplay will be good. I am not against toon graphics (Rayman, Fire Emblem looks great), but this game looks ugly and cheap. And man, why you put stamps on people so easily?
@KoopaTheQuick Oh goodness me no...
The Nintendo 64 and Nintendo GameCube games were AMAZING.
Hmm... Color Splash is my first, and thus far only Paper Mario game. At first I loved it, but it overstayed it's welcome. Around the time I got the third color star, I really had no desire to keep going. It was also kind of frustrating that the battles were pitifully easy, but figuring out what I was supposed to do next was overly mysterious. Of course my waning enthusiasm didn't help that issue.
But I absolutely love the graphics in these Paper Mario games.
@antdickens for sure. Leakers have also been way to good at well...leaking.haha.
Really not sure what to think about the new Paper Mario game from this trailer. A couple of the environments look a bit bare and the graphics don't look that good at all, that's before we even know about the battle system. Hopefully my point of view will change with time but I still have Color Splash to play on my Wii U first.
@Anvold
Who cares about Tree Carcass Plumber Man anymore? It's already had its 5 seconds of fame, meanwhile Ride To Hell: Gamestop Distribution is still GOTY, every year.
Not here to put labels on anyone, just here to give excellent game recommendations and the truth is video games peaked as an art form in 2013 with the release Ride to Shell: Gas Station Revolution.
There's so much comments that dunno if someone said already BUT at 17.7 comes Ghost of Tsushima and release date was announced, two days ago or smth? I think that's why Nintendo gives us something good at the same time.
METROID at the end. Mario running as 2D character? Is it teasing new platformer with Samus? Time will show
I'll stay quietly optimistic til more is revealed. TTYD set the bar really high and the last couple Paper Mario games just weren't good, imho.
I want it to be great, I'm hoping it's great. Time will tell.
@Toy_Link what the Hell, man? Ride to Hell: Retribution cause you a mental trauma or something? Or you know only this game? Animation in Ride to Hell is horrible. It's madness, if you say, that it have a good graphics.
@BenAV I see it in the morning and I bought in the afternoon (the pre-purchase). I don't was able to hold myself. I skiped Colour Splash and Sticker Star. I don't liked the origami enemies but this game looks so better than the two last paper mario games, which was hard think in not buy or even wait. Too, the combat system looks will need some skill of the player now.
loved it <3 Day 1 of course!
Seems Nintendo isn't too keen on preserving the legacy of Paper Mario. The only game that's seen any kind of rerelease in this series is the original on Virtual Console for Wii U. Wonder if this trend will continue. It seemed like a golden opportunity to rerelease at least Color Splash here, but it seems like that isn't happening any time soon.
This looks like trash if it again fails to embrace the mold of the first two games. Seriously you have to just look at Nintendo and scratch your head sometimes when they leave good ideas on the cutting floor. It's still relying on "craft appeal;" nobody with knowledge of the history is catered to by graphical glitz and glam! Gameplay first Nintendo, that's basic stuff.
I dont want a new Paper Mario to be like Paper Mario 64 and TTYD. I want Paper Mario to be a new Paper Mario game.
Sticker Star didnt deliver, Color Splash did.
I’ve gotta say this announcement and trailer have done nothing for me. It’s cool people get a new Paper Mario game, but I’d much rather have a new Mario & Luigi RPG. I’m still bummed AlphaDream closed up shop. 😞
If Nintendo really wants to get my attention, pull this same tactic for a new Switch Mario Golf game. Then I’ll get excited.
Like a lot of other people have said, it will all come down to the battle system for me.
@Ardisan deliver on what? It seems like a misnomer to claim that the series should be "like itself," yet deviant from what the games are. There is no legacy to the game aside from the connection which has been established with fans.
Paper Mario: The Origami King also introduces a new ring-based battle system that lets you flex your puzzle-solving skills to line up scattered enemies and maximize damage.
Puzzle battles get old quickly. Why can't they just use a normal battle system like the first two games?
@OptometristLime I know you're upset you didn't get what you wanted from a new Paper Mario game, I understand. I love Paper Mario too.
Okay... first, this came out of nowhere, woah. Second...
OH YEAH!!! A NEW PAPER MARIO!!!
But things are really different here however... this sounds utterly insane, really. And it's even weirder than this got just announced and it's coming in just two months?! I knew Intelligent Systems was developing something there but... this sounds like it was ready to be announced at E3 2019 or maybe even 2018. Nintendo really did it this time... announce a big game two months before launch... I know something similar happened with Astral Chain but this is a first-party situation! Who knows what will be announced next
Getting serious sticker star and color splash vibes from this I hope I am wrong.
I hope Nintendo makes a new mario and Luigi rpg
@Don you mean super mario all-stars 2
Yes please! Quite a few interesting games releasing over the next few months, hopefully this is a return to form.
@Crono1973 How it can be tiring if to defeat faster the enemies, just need use the brain? Nothing stop the player to play whitout use the puzzle. Just will take more time and damage. AND THIS is what rpgs are about, combat systems to use the brain.
Hmm, with e3 cancelled and no direct in sight I wonder if Nintendo is just going to roll out a bunch of trailers over the next few weeks to announce every game they have planned for 2020.
Oh no! There goes another reason to spend $60.
@OptometristLime it delivered a fun game. It was what sticker star tried and failed to be.
Visually stunning, as always. I want to see more gameplay, though.
@andyc777 True, but honestly you wouldn't want any challenge? I mean if it makes people happy I'm fine, but i feel Nintendo is leaning extremely to the "lets make it too easy" side recently. Thats just how i feel about things. The games are still 100% gorgeous and technically solid though, but just a bit boring i find.
wooooo!!! this is great, I am really excited to see some gameplay I'm sure they will do a good job, and the art is just epic
@Dijita Could you tell me whats so great about that game? I have it for GC, but couldn't really get into it.
@Ardisan you're right, I guess it's a sore spot. Thanks for taking my comment in stride.
I'm on the fence with Origami King, but it did get me to buy the original Paper Mario for my Wii U. I see potential and I also see problems that I just don't understand. The potential are areas or stages like that "Snifit Bazaar," which almost was able to get me excited for this game alone. What I don't understand is why character design and character originality continues to be very basic and generic. I've played The Thousand Year Door. A Bob-omb named Bob-omb maybe as a partner (who knows) does nothing for me. Are they creatively gassed after messing around with the paper aesthetic for the environments?
How exciting X). BOUT TIME NINTENDO!!!
@Trajan What I loved about it the most are the character's dialogue and sense of humour the whole game has. The design choices and world are very appealing to me. The combat mechanics were some of my favourite, bringing in a slice of Mario's platforming into the mix.
I grew up with Mario games and The Thousand Year Door felt like a gift to people who grew up with it. Turning the world of Mario upside down and having him pair up with a goomba was just good fun.
I can understand that maybe if you're going back to playing it, the combat might not seem as ground breaking as it did back then, thus it won't quite hit the same notes with you.
I wouldn't force yourself to play it if it's just not clicking. I love it. A lot of people cherish it. It's ok if it's not your jam.
I guess Nintendo just picked my birthday present for me 😆
@andyc777 lol.. and the rumors were true! So my logic was sound!
@Henmii for sure... But it appears that the rumors were true! So excited about 3d all stars!
