Back in 2017 - the same year as the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Wii U and Switch - Nintendo showcased the early stages of the game's development at a CEDEC conference.
Now, some images of the footage it shared at this event have surfaced online. It shows a map of Japan, Link running around Himeji Castle, and the unused skydiving mechanic - which was apparently lifted from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword but never properly implemented into Breath of the Wild. Take a look below:
The team supposedly used a 2D map of Kyoto to help gauge the distance between landmarks in the game and then built up certain locations, such as Himeji Castle, into basic 3D models (thanks, @Pixelpar).
What do you think of these early development screens of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild? Tell us in the comments.

Where are the aliens?
At first, I thought this was from the Gigaleak. Good to know Nintendo was okay with making this public!
Modders incoming!!!! lol
Perhaps this will be a thing in BOTW 2..."Breath of the City".
Assassins Creed China might be a thing next time.
Wouldn't be shocked if a Japan-like town and skydiving are in Breath of the Wild 2.
Maybe skydiving and Japan were set aside for the sequel!
@Slowdive
That's kinda what Splatoon does, although it's not really an exploration game.
I would love it if the sequel has a giant city to explore. Zelda's very own Novigrad.
@JR150 I think the hub world in Splatoon 2 is the best graphics Nintendo have put out,it looks amazing. It uses anti-aliasing so no flickering and jaggy edges on windows and fences, like in Mario Odyssey. In game the flicker returns but the game is so fast you don't notice it. That hub world is beautiful though. Same with the train in the Octopass Expansion. A full exploration game in that style would be incredible.
This is really cool! I would love to play Link to Tsushima on Switch! Ghost is very cool, but I still prefer the horses, climbing, and inverse kinematics (the way Link walks on the ground and on slopes is vastly better in Breath of the Wild vs Ghost of Tsushima, I actually hope they patch Ghost because it does break some of the illusion of being in an alternate place when your feet go through the ground) in Zelda BotW.
I totally want to play as Link on an island or series of islands that resemble historical Japan. And I'd like to be able to skydive there!
@OorWullie
Yeah that's why I keep saying that I want a single-player Splatoon spin-off before a third multiplayer-focused installment. Something more along the lines of an action RPG with named characters and a story to follow in the every day lives of the Inkling/Octolings with possible relationship building like FE Three Houses. That's something we don't get to see in the main game. Yeah the Splatoon manga sorta does that, but not everyone reads the manga. The ability to actually explore the world of Inkopolis beyond the boundaries of its Turf War maps would be nice. I'd like to see more inside Ancho-V games, the shops of Arowana Mall, and the beaches near the Manta Maria.
Guess that’s a good way to test your open world game... Use a real open world map...
Always cool to see this stuff.
I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE FIRST GAMEPLAY FOR BOTW 2!!!
The "The Legend of Zelda" - series is the only game series where I am still excited like a kid, when a new entry is announced. 😄
Bring back Loftwings!
This should be dlc
Imagine Breath Of The Wild 2 with Link travelling to modern day Tokyo kind of like ‘The Last Ninja 2’ ( even though that was New York ).....what a game changer that would be!
@TG16_IS_BAE I've totally asked someone to look into this already haha.
@Ventilator They already did a spinoff China thing in assassins creed, they might go the Ottoman route next
Link who went to a wrong world/dimension... so out of place. Doesn't fit in. Try again please
Looks like a random setting for testing purpose.
Aka slow news
Wonder if there's any Maid Cafes to enter?
Asking for a friend.
@batata I know, but that were 2D.
There is new leaked 3D AC China concept art online.
It looks like Mystical Ninja Quest Starring Goemon (N64). Low poly and low res texture and all 😂
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Rising Sun! I'd play it.
@Ainz That’s great, I hope someone implements it!
He skydives in the final build for cuts scenes, hope this World 0 - 1comes soon as a DLC!
@OorWullie I don't think the hub world uses anti-aliasing, it's just that the hub world runs at a higher resolution and a lower framerate since there's no action. Even the ink is more detailed in single player modes. I could be wrong on that, but that's what I see and I think it's what the DF analysis mentioned at the time IIRC.
But yeah, I'd also love to have more Splatoon games outside of "just" the multiplayer aspect. To me the Octo expansion proved there's a lot they can do with the existing world and mechanics for a full fledged single player experience.
@OorWullie that's my hope as well
LINK V GODZILLA!!
I loved the sailcloth and skydiving getting a bit more focus in the sequel dev for Skyward Sword (they were criminally underused in the Wii title), but ultimately riding a Paraglider like I'm in the mountains of Rio de Janeiro is more fun than skydiving and then pulling out a parachute, so I'm fine with the change. I remember seeing the skydiving and sail cloth in early Wii U builds they showed us, though!
I heard they used Kyoto as a model / way of gauging distance and area in the game, but didn't realize they did it this way! Very cool!
@Ventilator Oh, wow! Then it must be true, every Ubisoft thing leaks off very quickly, maybe it some Switch exclusive Assassins Creed with the modern additions.
@batata Asian AC have been rumoured for years.
China makes sense after Valhalla, so it's probably true.
Also remember. Valhalla were leaked on a poster inside The Division 2 game, and happened to be true too.
AC games nowadays is too huge for Switch, but the 2D AC Chronicles.. China, Russia and India will work fine on Switch.
A Zelda game set in Japan sounds like the sickest idea
What if they made a Zelda SMT crossover--
Heavy flashbacks to Pilotwings
@JR150 no offense man but as much as I like splatoon... that would suck. Don't get me wrong I love the campaign and all and RPG elements and characters would be great but without multiplayer? Imagine csgo changing to story only. Splatoon is more of an esport kind of game. Now what WOULD be a good splatoon three would be everything you said AND a good multiplayer. (Oh and the persona element in splatoon would feel wrong so I don't know why anyone would want that)
@nab1 I meant to get back to you before now. It was actually from Digital Foundry that I learned about the hub world using anti-aliasing.
"Curiously, Splatoon 2's hub area shows a re-evaluation of Nintendo's rendering priorities. Resolution bumps to a locked 1080p, while the signature 60fps performance level is halved to 30fps. Anti-aliasing is added into the bargain, giving us a kind of 'what if' scenario - the resultant image quality is a night and day improvement, but the hit to performance is unacceptable for a fast-paced shooter like this. Effectively, this hub area is demonstrating the cost of 60fps gameplay, and just how much performance we'd need to lose in order to present a consistently prettier image."
@OorWullie You are right, thanks for the correction. I seemed to have misremembered their findings, and I incorrectly made an assumption that it meant no AA.
