Thankfully, fans of the Donkey Kong Country series have been treated rather well over the past few years, with Donkey Kong Country Returns and its sequel Tropical Freeze launching across all of Nintendo's latest systems. We can't sing the praises of Tropical Freeze enough - seriously, if you haven't played it, go and do so immediately - but we'll always have a soft spot for the original trilogy on SNES, too.
And that's where this video comes in (above), courtesy of YouTube user BlobVanDam. The video shows how Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest might look if Nintendo decided to rerelease it today, with its Parrot Chute Panic level being completely remade in lovely, shiny HD.
It all looks pretty spectacular to us, and we can already hear the cries for a Donkey Kong Country Trilogy Switch release just waiting to be blasted into our comment section. Here's how the level originally looked:
If you're wanting to play the original for yourself, you can actually download the game from the Wii U and 3DS eShops. The original Donkey Kong Country can also be found on the SNES Classic Edition console if you're lucky enough to have one.
Would you play an HD rerelease of these SNES classics? Tell us below.
Thanks to chewytapeworm for the tip!

NINTENDOOOOOOOOOOO
So this is what salt and lemon juice in an open wound feels like?
Why in the flaming sausage Nintendo haven't put the Donkey Kongs on the Switch yet is completely beyond me.
well now i wanna see what the first game would look like in this engine
It looks gorgeous!!!
This is all I need in my life.
No matter how good it looks, the graphics will never hold a candle to the music. Which is not to say I wouldn't buy it 😁
AMAZING GAME!!!!!!
"Would you play an HD rerelease of these SNES classics? Tell us below."
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES PLEASE YES YES YES DO IT NOW PLEASE YES ARE YOU LISTENING NINTENDO? YES YES YES
With none of them being added to the SNES switch app I have a feeling we are getting reworked versions... maybe
better art style than Returns or Tropical Freeze. the originals are just classics.
Yeah I’d buy an HD trilogy remake. Twice!!!
The best 2D platformer ever made.
@Kitchener
I would buy instantly
I want this so bad it hurts.
I'm throwing money at the screen... but nothing is happening.
I’d buy day one
@Muddy_4_Ever I hear you - Me too!
Note to self: Next time, throw notes
Honestly, this looks ugly. SNES originals are beautiful as they are and should be re-released on Switch. Possibly with some bonus content, like Aladdin&Lion King.
I liked the GBA additions. Do a definitive version!
I think that this is the first time the transition from 2D graphics to 3D graphics doesn't look worse, probably because the original game has pre-rendered computer graphics.
Surely a no brainer to get the trilogy remastered, given how well it sold. Maybe this is why they are not SNES online yet?
DKC2 is my favorite game ever so this is more than welcome... come on, Nintendo!
Wow looks amazing! Shame the Trilogy isn't even in NSO almost 2 years in. Nintendo drops the ball big time on occasion
This, in my opinion, would be the only acceptable excuse for us not yet having the DKC trilogy as part of the SNES online games.
I would buy that day 1
I would play it, but I rather just be happy with a collection of the original trilogy with some sharper, smoother sprites than just blown out 3D... Yes that's how strong the nostalgia is for me.
Way too sterile. Watching the whole video couldn't get the atmosphere across, but I take one glance at the original screenshots and think sticky.
@HaNks but this HD has the same art style wym
@HaNks I dont think you played thru Tropical Freeze
Tropical Freeze is a totally different game to the original SNES DKC trilogy. The gameplay feels totally different - Tropical Freeze feels heavy and clunky in comparison. The originals were poetry in motion.
@Petriebird The modern DKC games are amazing in their own rights.
@Petriebird agree, Impossible Lair is closer to the original controls though. never liked Returns/Tropical Freeze for that reason.
DKC2 is my favorite game ever, but I'm not at all a fan of this HD remake. Makes it look like a soulless tablet game my kids would play. It's just too clean.
Get on this, Retro
@KoopaTheQuick That is in fact the same guy. Look at the uploaders for both videos.
@sketchturner Same. The sprite work was a big part of the DKC trilogy's charm. It's okay to remake these... but you gotta go all the way with it. Music and sound effects are mostly the same; they might have used Jammin' Sam Miller's restored versions of the music, but a remake shouldn't rely so heavily on the source material, because at that point, you might as well just play the original.
It's always the fans and nintendo never take a hint and remake these wonderful timeless games.
It would be so great if nintendo remade donkey kong 1,2,3 snes think how poplar they would be.
As shown above donkey kong country 2 looks outstanding remade in hd it's truly hypnotic.
Well, we'll get the trilogy once Rare Replay Switch is announced. Replace the Microsoft platform games with the DKC trilogy and DK64.
Oh, and raise the price to $60, because of course. I'd still buy it.
@KayFiOS New Super Mario Bros. DS looks horrendous compared to Super Mario World or Super Mario Bros. 3. In this demo, they basically have upgraded the original assets that were pre-rendered computer graphics. We are talking about one if not my favourite game ever but I think that the new 3D graphics look fine and faithful and I wouldn't be happy if they wouldn't rely heavily on the source. It's kind of what could have be done if the SNES wasn't limited to sprites and primitive 3D graphics. Of course, the original trilogy was visually perfect but on modern displays this would look much better. Physics and controls are spot on, that alone impresses me.
@Jokerwolf yes they are good but for me not as amazing... I enjoyed yooka laylee impossible lair more than Tropical Freeze as it has that fluid role jump mechanic of the original DCKs that I loved so much.
Gimme.
(Already saw this video, but yes, please remake/remastered these games!)
ugh . . ..gimme
so pretty
@Kitchener
Nintendo.
nuff said.
@Petriebird Exactly. I really want to love DC:TF, but the roll to jump mechanic is just gone. Others seem to think it’s fine, or even good, but after the originals... it’s hard to be that sluggish. I’m guessing it’s mostly younger people or people who never got very good at the original who defend TF as having good control. I’ll eventually get back to that game, and probably enjoy it, but... can’t help being a little disappointed that jumping throw the level feels so slow and clunky. (Funky’s movement is closer the mark, I guess, but I don’t want to cheat or have the game play itself.)
Edit: Feel free to change my mind with respectable debate. Like I said, I want to love TF.
I have vivid memories of waking up on Xmas, before any of my family had woken up, and finding that perfect rectangular shape under the tree. I still feel the sensation of looking at the DKC 2 box art after tearing off the wrapping paper. The HD video looks great, but I love the original and I'm kind of a purist about things like this. I'm not even a big fan of the new DKC games.
I’d instantly buy the trilogy Collectors Edition!
Second best DKC. I cant put in words how beautiful TF is. Those levels and those tracks (oh my god busted bayou) are way above any plataformer. This fan made level is cool tho. Not amazing but cool, i would get it if it were real.
Wish they would create a collection, I would snap it up but as it's Rare, will never happen, especially with the other Donkey Kong country by Retro
And to think I've only played the first game out of the original trilogy. XD Hoping to fix that before too long!
Would love a new donkey kong on switch.
I actually prefer the original.
New one is too shiny.
@BlueOcean It's not the graphics that are the problem for me, it's the fact that the sound design isn't improved, and looking at it again, the animation looks janky. That works for the SNES, because it's all sprite based, but seeing it in 3D, it just looks off. I love the DKC trilogy, but something like this wouldn't convince me to stop playing the SNES version. If it were something more along the lines of Sonic 3: Angel Island Revisited, which is the same game with only slight improvements to the visuals and audio, but with major improvements to the gameplay, like widescreen support and alternate control options, then that would be my preferred way to play.
Wow wow wow! Do it Nintendo!!
@KayFiOS I understand what you mean and as I said, I think that the original trilogy still is perfect except for the old resolution. I like that they kept animations like they were because that keeps gameplay tight. I hate how some modern games play with visual effects, animation and camera angles so much when they are 2D games, e.g., Tropical Freeze. This remake demo doesn't feel off to me but that's just my opinion.
feels soulless in the same way a lot of recent nintendo first-party games have, it's hard to put a finger on why though
I wonder if Nintendo plays around with the idea in remaking the 3 original DKC-games as Activision did it with Crash and Spyro.
The Donkey Kong Country trilogy are games I believe doesn't need to be remake, those already look fantastic, just a few upscale to HD and they could stand the test of time. I play those on my Analogue Super Nt and was blown away by how sharp and beautiful the graphics were looking better than even modern indie titles. If they should remake a game from the DK IP though, just remake Donkey Kong 64.
Maybe this just isn't the best level to showcase, but it doesn't look better than the original, just a little "cleaner". The only way to make the original games justice IMO would be to re-generate all the sprites from the original models as if they were creating the game today, but for the higher resolutions of modern displays. But definitely should be sprite based.
@Alexface Definitive editions on Switch run at 504p. What you really want Is an HD edition. Unless of course ONLY gameplay matters in which case I don't know why you need either edition.
Personally I am not a fan of that, looks too similar to all the other 2D platformers these days. DKC had such a unique look that has aged very well, it seems to be lost on this.
Well it's not just running in HD; it's an entirely nw 2.5D remake from what I can see. And it's executed brilliantly, so no wonder it looks so good.
I’d love an HD remake of the original DKC trilogy on Switch!
The DKC soundtracks are so good! They’re still my favorite video game soundtracks to this day.
I would definitely give this a go if it were a full game up to that quality throughout. And if I were Microsoft/Rare I might even pay the guy and get a wee team together to make it happen. Kinda wish he'd do it for all the SNES DKC games.
Rare are never giving this up. If they did they would hand over Donkey Kong 64 as well and that has already been off limits for a while. Also I bet the music has all sorts of licensing issues by this point.
I really want this now!
@Petriebird Ya the classics are great for sure, I also beat all of tropical freeze co-op, and you know how hard it gets at the end lol.
Not generally my kind of game but I’d consider buying this. What I’d love is a remake of Donkey Kong 64, with some modernization and better graphics it could be spectacular.
Yes, please. Probably my favorite DKC game for sentimental reasons (the only one I owned as a kid). Though the first game is a masterpiece as well.
@tzahn Maybe that’s what that mysterious Xbox One/Switch game that was “leaked” on Amazon France is. Hm.
@doctorhino All 3 DKC games and DK64 were on Wii U, weren’t they?
How about the Rare Replay: Nintendo Edition? All the games in the original package (a number of which were Nintendo titles) plus the ones that Nintendo has the rights to, exclusively for Switch. Goldeneye would be awesome, too, but even without it, such a title would be so great.
Cool...it should be taken down soon by Nintendo. People never learn, lol
@RobbySuave oh I'm totally wrong, I just looked that up. Cool maybe we can get dk64 on switch one day.
@Creature
Did Rare not own those rights during the Wii era then?
@Bunkerneath You are aware that Nintendo sold all three SNES DKC games on the Virtual Console? The games remain in Nintendo's stable.
@Creature Which characters would you be referring to?
Nintendo need to hire this person and remake the whole trilogy in this style. Like what Activision did with Spyro and Crash. I would deffo buy
@Creature
So Rare (or Microsoft) agreed to the Donkey Kong Country games being released on the Wii Virtual Console, and Donkey Kong Country on the SNES Mini, but are possibly withholding them for the SNES online service on Switch?
@Creature
I assumed your initial comment was in reference to the absence of Donkey Kong Country games on Switch.
Otherwise I'm confused as to why you make such comment.
@Creature
Personally, I would pay £20 a year to play the Donkey Kong Country trilogy.
DKC1-3 Remastered as one package on the Switch, when?
@Creature Hahahaha, several million people are holding out on NSO subscriptions. Perhaps not for DKC alone, sure.
I am attempting to corroborate what you are saying about Rare retaining some financial stake in the original trilogy, but I have difficulty understanding how this is so, even if "minor" characters are retained by that studio. When King K. Rool (not minor, admittedly) was included in Smash Bros., I heard no references to MS or Rare, as I did with other Nintendo-MS cooperation.
@Creature In the case of a shared financial stake, I do indeed wonder what Nintendo would do. To my great surprise, Crystalis is included in the NES subscription app despite its inclusion in SNK's collection. Crystalis is among the best NES titles, but I cannot imagine Nintendo paying SNK more than a nominal fee to include it. How much would be they be paying Koei Tecmo for Ninja Gaiden, which is no system-seller, but nonetheless a key part of the NES legacy?
this looks kind of cheap looking.
"Would you play an HD rerelease of these SNES classics? Tell us below."
YES, YES!!! A THOUSAND TIMES YES
Looks very cool.
You see? This is why I hate DKC 2 & 3. Those darn vertically scrolling levels!
@KoopaTheQuick lol that was made by the same guy.
@Petriebird might want to check the lag on your tv. Part of the reason SNES games seemed so responsive is because you were playing them on a CRT.
I feel like nintendo should do something similar to spyro reignited and crash nsane and do it for the dkc trilogy
