Surprisingly, after playing a bit I've become less concerned about there only being one map than I initially was when that detail was first revealed. After playing the OG game for twenty years you'd think a brand new map would be mind blowing but in reality it doesn't actually change the experience that much, though I certainly do enjoy some of the more notable new features of Skyah such as the distant islands that can spawn which gives you a new goal to aim for.
I think I'm coming to the conclusion that the map is essentially just a base for player interactions, item spawns and field events to take place on, and the variables involved in those elements are what really give the game its replayability. I certainly would be happy to get more maps, but I don't think it would be as big of a deal as one would expect.
Weirdly Wild World is the one game in the series I never jived with. It's the only one where I never fully expanded my house for example. I think the terrible frame rate and tiny screen made the whole thing feel a bit claustrophobic to me. Also the acorns. So many acorns.
I can't believe there are people who seem legitimately upset at Nintendo for removing designs like this lol. It's a bit silly to be sure, but at the end of the day Nintendo has a family friendly standard they are going to enforce and this crosses the line for them and the line has to be set somewhere. It's that simple.
@The_Nintendo_Pedant A game that hasn't released yet literally cannot speak for itself so the only option for building up excitement is to show and tell. A game focused Direct is not fluff, it is marketing. It is providing the info people need to determine if they want to purchase the game when it releases or not.
I hope it's not actually open world the way most open world games are. Surprised they didn't go into more details here, but it's entirely possible these are more like Half-Life 2 vehicle segments than a fully open, explorable world.
I changed the jump button to B when I first found the option but actually changed it back shortly after. With B as jump I found myself pressing the wrong dig buttons constantly. I found it a lot easier to dig the direction I intended with the default control scheme and I got used to pressing A to jump very quickly.
This is one of my favorite games of all time and it has one of the best OSTs of all time! Really really excited to see this finally get a remaster. I hope a lot more people can discover this game through the remaster.
@8bit-Man @NinjaWaddleDee @YunoboCo In the City Trial character select screen, there is a prompt on the top right of the screen which states "A: P2/P3/P4 JOIN" so it's likely City Trial does still support local split screen multiplayer. Not sure why it's not mentioned in the game description, but I hope Nintendo clarifies soon because I see a lot of people assuming the worst here. I'd also be very upset if it didn't support local play but I think it does.
I don't understand what the point of bringing up Silksong in this article is. Can't y'all let a game like this, which has nothing in common with Silksong, speak for itself?
I finished the game last night and overall feel like I'd give it an 8.5, so rounded it up for the poll with a 9. There's a lot to love here but I do wish the level design was a bit more engaging. Lots of fun mechanics but they go through those mechanics so quickly it often feels like they pass by them without fully exploring them, at least as far as the stuff required to beat the game goes. I haven't done a ton of extra stuff yet. I also feel like some of the game's systems are relatively superfluous. I never touched the costumes and while the skill tree did give a decent incentive to collect bananas it always felt a bit arbitrary to me.
That said those are all issues of missed potential, they don't weigh down the really good stuff. And the good stuff is really good. The finale in particular might be the greatest finale in any Nintendo game I've ever played. It makes you look at Mario Odyssey's finale and go "aw, how cute" lol. It just keeps going and going all while getting better and better.
Well I guess that means there will never be a Genki portable dock for Switch 2... Shame, I really like their Switch 1 portable dock. Hopefully someone else makes a good one eventually because portable docks really makes the Switch shine as a multiplayer anywhere console.
Wow thank you so much for writing about the game/interview! I'm definitely excited to get Baldi's Basics Plus on Switch/Switch 2 (Especially excited about the mouse controls on Switch 2 since Plus includes some minigames that are best played with a mouse).
I do have one correction though, which is that much of what I discuss in the interview pertains to Baldi's Basics Plus, not Classic Remastered. The remaster is complete and I don't have plans at this time to bring it to consoles. Plus on the other hand is a significantly different take on the original concept and what I consider to be the "full game". It's a stealth roguelike featuring procedurally generated levels and a lot more NPCs and obstacles to deal with. It's been available in early access since 2020 but I hope it won't take another five years to wrap up haha.
Oh also my last name is spelled "McGonigal" but "McGonigle" is far from the worst attempt to spell it I've seen lol.
@Nintoz I believe the reason it originally didn't have an extended version was due to the fact they originally used the soundtrack CD version, which actually has an ending bit before a perfectly loopable point is reached. It seems now they've gone and re-ripped the track to ensure it is loopable. This also means it's a bit higher quality than previously but that the ending bit has been removed. It just fades out now, but I think that's a worthwhile trade off.
I don't understand why, at the very least, they don't make the buttons pressure sensitive like on the DualShock 2. It would be better than nothing. You'd still get that immediacy of a digital button, but then you could still have some analog control as well, even if not as precise as a proper analog trigger.
I saw the gameplay during the Treehouse and gosh it just looks abysmal. The players kept awkwardly slamming into each other, the pace was super slow, bleh. Due to the control scheme it essentially looks like basketball with tank controls except instead of using a stick to turn you're flailing your arms about a tabletop.
This would be a neat thing to try at GDC's unique control methods section. Like I'm imagining someone setting up an actual wheelchair on the expo floor that maps movement into the game. That would be neat, but certainly not something anyone would want to play for more than a few minutes.
This is totally baseless but I had the thought that maybe the button was given different letters as Nintendo sent out details to different 3rd parties as a sort of identifier. If the button ends up being blank when the console releases I feel like that's a possibility. If that is the case, I imagine whatever company got "C" is in big trouble with Nintendo lol.
I never got into trading cards but they always seemed like a neat concept. Buy a pack of cool cards where what you get is a neat surprise and then you can play games with them. It's a freaking shame that people have completely ruined the concept by obsessing over them so much that people will pay hundreds if not thousands for rare pieces of cardboard.
Glad to see Myst nominated again and hope it finally gets inducted. I mean, it's the best selling PC game of the 20th century for goodness sake! That's not to mention the influence it's had. In many ways I feel it paved the way for more slow, atmospheric and exploration focused games.
Donkey Kong Country 2 is one of my most favorite games ever but MAN is Kudgel an awful boss. Just long stretches of boring, easy to avoid patterns followed by a TNT barrel inexplicably dropping from the sky for you to throw at him. Honestly the design of most DKC bosses isn't great (I really don't enjoy any bosses that require you to just... Wait around and dodge attacks until an opening presents itself) but Kudgel might be the worst from the original trilogy.
@Kyloctopus Nah man, it may not do much to take advantage of being a videogame, but as a pinball game, just straight up pinball, it slaps. Great playfield design, cool toys, and a solid ruleset. I'd actually rank it amongst my favorite IRL pins if there was a physical version. I'll also add it that I suggested a friend get it before the eShop shut down and he ended up getting so into it that he broke several buttons on his 3DS and is now hooked on pinball in general! So it's not just me who loves Pinball Pulse, haha.
@nimnio You're forgetting the fact that Outer Wilds is doing a lot more than just graphics. Lots of complex physics calculations happening constantly as well.
Best game in the series for multiplayer, and still super fun in single-player. Motion controls are nearly flawless once you learn how to assume the forms properly. I've never considered the series' extra content such as the minigames and toys more than charming distractions, so I don't mind the lack of them here. I'm content trying to set new high scores in the standard endless modes.
This is probably my most anticipated game of the year! Single player score chasing or multiplayer madness, it doesn't matter to me, WarioWare is always a great time.
@Yosher WarioWare and Wario Land are not mutually exclusive. Just because they both prominently feature Wario doesn't mean it could have been Wario Land instead. If that mindset is seriously impacting your enjoyment of the WarioWare games I'd seriously try to change it because you'll be missing out on a lot of fun!
A lot of the comments I'm seeing about this game are strong evidence that Nintendo was really stupid to change this series into a Lemmings clone without changing the title. So many people seem to think this is the same level of quality as the sequels when in reality it's so much better.
@Bigmanfan This has no bearing on whether or not Nintendo is working on a new DKC game. Refusing to buy this game "out of sheer principle" would be like refusing to buy the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC because they added Diddy Kong to it before announcing the next DKC.
This looks very charming and insanely mid. It looks like the gameplay consists of every level having some sort of heavy handed gimmick and so instead of nailing one play style and building on top of it ala Kirby, it's just going to be a bunch of middling play styles that won't be cooked enough to much fun.
This game is wonderful and while I'm glad to see Nintendo finally going back to the good version of Mario Vs. Donkey Kong, I'm a bit bummed it's not a sequel.
This game will go completely off the rails if some streamer is insane enough to try playing Color Shoot with random people Jackbox style (Assuming it works the same way).
Y'know I feel like the Playdate fills this niche in an great modern way. Super pocketable, mostly very simple games, the ability to add more games, all in a very slick unit. It's been my go to for whenever I go out somewhere I think I might want to kill some time, even with my 3DS still readily available and a handful of good games on my phone.
Glad to see Pinball Pulse here! I love the game so much I rank it alongside my favorite real pinball machines. Anyone with ANY interest in pinball should absolutely grab it before it's gone.
@mr_somewhere Nah, it sounds like a neat idea, but there's nothing unfair about it being scrapped. Companies probably go through pitches like this on a regular basis, and of course they can only pick so many to move forward with. Several other cool pitches we'll likely never hear about probably got rejected as well until Donkey Kong Country Returns was picked up.

Not only that, but a license they were explicitly told they could not use? It's one thing when an anonymous individual from China releases a bootleg Mario game on the App Store, but this is actually insane.
I haven't played it in a while, but not because I don't want to. I just realized I was spending too much time playing considering my backlog right now, so I stopped, but I definitely want to pick it up again some time. Still lots of stuff I want to do on my island.
Weird that they were never able to use that tech in a game, it looks pretty good for GBA. The Crazy Frog game doesn't look to be using the same tech though which is also weird.

Mario Party 3 on Switch will probably be the most convenient way to play it (I have four Switch N64 controllers too!) and having the option to play online (Without the hassle of using other emulators) is a great bonus!
To me, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best from a content and online standpoint, but Double Dash is my favorite when it comes down to the mechanics and gameplay. Double Dash also has the best battle mode for local play by far, since it was one of the last ones designed with only four players in mind. The battle maps are all a bit too big for local play in the games that came after.
Japan's is pretty good, but the guy in the back doesn't actually look like he's racing, he's just kind of floating there. NA not only includes all four characters, but they all actually look like they're taking part in the action. I have to go with NA here.
@SpaceboyScreams Speak for yourself. This game is a blast. I was born after this game released and it's probably my favorite racing game outside of the Mario Kart series. No nostalgia attached. Super fun physics, tight controls, great vibes. The thought of being able to play it online is making me consider getting the expansion pack.
Weird. I like Logitech stuff, so I don't doubt the hardware itself will be well made, but like everyone here's already stated portable and cloud gaming don't mix.
Very interesting! I'll bet they did this primarily to improve emulation on Steam Deck, as on Windows it's already pretty easy to get the Switch Online controllers working as regular controllers with BetterJoy.
