This isn't news. They updated a trademark to include downloadable games. They already sell downloadable Donkey Kong games. This means literally nothing.
As a game developer (Or anyone in any other creative field) it's important to remember that for every jerk throwing empty insults at you there are 100 people looking forward to what your creating. You should never shut things down and ruin the fun for people who actually care over the actions of an obnoxious minority.
I see nasty comments about the stuff I make fairly frequently, but I make it a point to make sure I don't allow those comments to suck the fun out of what I do.
I still play Pikmin Bloom, but I recognize it's days are numbered. Not only does it not seem to have a very big install base (Relatively speaking), there's literally no reason to spend money on it. I always have more nectar than I need, and as a result plenty of flower petals, so there's no reason to ever buy any of those. There's no reason to grow more than one or two Pikmin at a time so no reason to buy the additional planters. Even the storage expansions are useless due to how easy it is to get nectar. When it's maxed out, I don't really feel like extra nectar I collect that gets thrown away is really much of a waste. And when I eventually max out my Pikmin storage, I'll just throw out any Pikmin that don't have unique decor, because there's really no incentive to keep them around.
So yeah, I enjoy it as something extra to do while I go on walks, and it encourages me to take different routes through my neighborhood as I try to cover it in as many flowers as possible, which is a feature I really like. I can't imagine it's making much revenue at all though, so I'm going to try to make the most of it while it's active.
The new ones sound fine. I think most people saying they don't sound good will probably warm up to them a bit when they can actually listen to them in full. When you just hear short snippets like these (And these are super short) any song can sound like garbage.
Nobody should get their hopes up because of this. It's an "early build" in the sense that the game doesn't release for a few more months and this build isn't final... Which everyone already knew. This build is the best Sega has to show at the moment, it's not a months old build full of issues that they've already fixed, it wouldn't make any sense for them to premiere their game with an outdated build like that.
I'm sure HAL is the company to thank for this, not Nintendo, though why it's the only Kirby OST to officially end up on streaming services I have no idea.
I've barely played it but tbh I'm already satisfied with it. I just wanted a good motion controlled sports game on my Switch, and this is it. Not because of nostalgia, not because it's a gimmick, but because it just works and it's always fun with friends and family.
Crossing my fingers for basketball three-point games though!
His Animal Crossing example makes sense, but it's also an example of exactly what I don't want in my games- extrinsic motivation. Games are best enjoyed when the motivation is simply to enjoy the game. Animal Crossing is fun and relaxing in and of itself. There may be a small motivation to create a cool island so that I can show it to others, but for the most part I'm just enjoying it because it's fun.
If you can sell your island for real money, then there becomes an extrinsic motivation to play so you can make some cash. You're no longer playing to have fun, you're playing to make money. And at that point, why play? There are better ways to make money and better ways to have fun.
I always thought it would be cool if Nintendo released 45s of K.K.'s music, with the live performance on one side and the aircheck on the other, but I'll take this too! Hopefully I can figure out how to import it before it sells out.
@Synecdoche Saying a 5/10 game (From one reviewer...) isn't worth anyone's time or money is a pretty bad way to look at reviews. A 5/10 is average, it says so right there. Not bad, just average. It may very well be worth playing to people who are interested or like similar games even if it's not the best experience out there.
So glad Nintendo America is finally offering some decent physical rewards. I have a Luigi's Mansion bag I really like (I think I got it from Target when I bought LM3?) and so another Nintendo themed bag should come in handy!
This sounds like it could be cool, but the more companies use the term "Metaverse" the more it loses its meaning (As if it already had any meaning to begin with...). This doesn't sound like a metaverse, it sounds like an online Lego themed game creation tool, perhaps with some MMO elements. Could be a fun way for kids to try their hand at game dev, could also end up being a way for kids to waste away their childhood playing copy/paste games created by bots like on Roblox. Either way, there's nothing separating it from already existing platforms that makes it a "metaverse."
Also, some people seem to think anything that claims to be a metaverse is also going to involve NFTs, which thankfully isn't the case, and it doesn't sound like NFTs will be involved here.
This just sounds like an MMO of sorts. I still have no idea what is supposed to separate the Metaverse from regular videogames and I'm pretty sure the companies throwing the terminology around have no clue either.
To me, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best Mario Kart in every aspect except pure gameplay, and Double Dash is definitely my favorite in that regard. It just feels more fun to control and is a lot more exciting. Also has the best battle mode in the series as it's the last one that was exclusively designed around four-player split screen. The later games all accounted for online in their battle modes which means the arenas are way too big for local play.
@NickDaddyCool You know you can turn the extra stuff off right? As much as I appreciate what Farsight did... I can't go back to TPA after playing the Zen versions. Zen's physics aren't perfect either but at least I don't end up playing an hour long game every time.
Y'all need to remember that Farsight Studios had to do Kickstarters for thousands of dollars to get licenses for pins like Twilight Zone, Star Trek, Addams Family, etc. And they were never able to line things up to even attempt Indiana Jones.
Licensing is expensive and this is one of the most highly rated pins ever made. I think the price is justified.
@Astral-Grain Yeah and drift that occurred that quickly likely would have had more to do with manufacturing defects than wear and tear that plagues most JoyCons over time. Just because a handful of early Decks also have immediate drift issues doesn't mean it's guaranteed to have widespread drift issues after heavy use.
Sticks drifting right out of the gate like this is entirely different from drift that develops over months of use. Drift that's started this early is obviously a manufacturing defect, and every piece of hardware ever made has a few lemons. Only time will tell if these sticks develop drift after heavy use like JoyCons do.
So I'm really excited for this, but now that I've taken a closer look these don't seem to be up to the graphical standards of other Mario Kart 8 tracks. I wonder if they're just porting track models from Tour and calling it a day.
Not a huge deal (Well, the DLC itself is!), but considering how good Mario Kart 8 looks, kind of a letdown in that area.
@PoliticallyIncorrect Okay so I did my research and it turns out, you're right. According to 17 USC 117, technically it is only legal to make a backup of a computer program for archival purposes. I suppose that excludes listening to it on a regular basis.
Ultimately though that just tells me that copyright law is in dire need of some changes. You can't convince me that it's wrong to do whatever I please with a piece of software I've legally purchased so long as it doesn't involve me selling it or distributing it to others. I'm a game dev, and people are more than welcome to copy whatever files or make whatever modifications they want to the games they buy from me so long as they aren't distributing those files to others. The reason I'm okay with that is because it makes literally no difference to me or my business what those people do with those files.
If I buy a CD of your music, and rip it and add the files to my digital music library, apparently that's illegal in some countries, but is it wrong? Are you going to call me a thief if I do that even though I legally own copies of the music? Would you only call me a thief if I do it in the countries where it's illegal?
Lastly, about how, according to you, "everyone would be doing it without fear of repercussion" if it wasn't technically illegal... There is no fear of repercussion. No one has ever been prosecuted for ripping a game soundtrack for personal use. The laws that make it illegal aren't even enforced, which probably says something about how "wrong" it really is.
@PoliticallyIncorrect Riddle me this, if I own a Nintendo game and want the soundtrack in my music library, but Nintendo doesn't provide it, I can A) Just rip the soundtrack myself and add it to my music library that way, or B) just download it from someone who has already ripped it. Am I wrong for going with B even though the end result is exactly the same? And at that point, can you consider it stealing if you've already purchased the game? Because if you legally own a copy of the game then you can legally do whatever the heck you want with it when it comes to personal use.
Ah man, I hope they didn't just use Unity's built-in physics. Unity's physics are fine for general usage or wacky physics games, but for something like this where good physics are so important they should probably be programmed from scratch.
@AtlanteanMan The SNES controllers can be used with any game that doesn't require inputs missing on them and on PC, the N64 controllers will probably be the same.
I was really afraid Nintendo would cater too much to Nostalgia and give Mario Party 3 the short end of the stick, and unfortunately that's exactly what happened. I'm still pretty excited for the game, but 3 should have had priority over 1. 3's boards are all great, and I wish we had gotten more than one.
I hope the game gets some DLC, but I'm not going to assume it will.
The danger of screen addiction lies in parents who don't give a care about how much time their kids are spending using electronics or the quality of the content they consume on them. When I was a kid at least most TV shows and video games had some sort of quality standard. So much free content exists now that's basically meant to profit off of kids who don't know better, who are content watching someone crack open surprise eggs for hours on end. As long as parents do their job and make sure they limit screen time and that the things their kids are watching/playing are of a certain quality then there wouldn't be a problem.
SreetPass is something I miss so much. I still frequently take my 3DS out with me, but I haven't gotten any random hits since MAGFest 2020 I think. Only a few from friends and family. Unfortunately it seems like cons will be the only way to get StreetPasses in the future, and in a few years it's likely you'll only get a handful at them.
One thing I realized that doesn't help is that I think (I could be wrong on this) that if you're StreetPass notifications are full, then people with available slots can't StreetPass you. Seeing as most 3DS owners these days have likely let their plazas and other games fill up and don't think to check them, even if you do pass someone else carrying a 3DS you likely won't StreetPass them.
I've used the kickstand a handful of times and like, I've never once had any issues with it. If you put it on a flat surface it stays in place just fine, I don't really understand how anyone has any issues with it. So an improved kickstand wouldn't really make me use it anymore than I do now.
@rjejr As you progress in the game you gain access to more sprinkles, which is where most of the strategy comes from. Honestly I'd just like to see them add more furniture items. All they've added since launch are holiday items, but I'd love for them to just add new sets of regular furniture and crafting recipes.
Oh, and add more/fix the villager dialogue. The main issue isn't a lack of dialogue (More would definitely help though), it's that you have to trudge through 8 pieces of contextual dialogue you've seen 100 times before they actually start saying interesting stuff. Sometimes they actually get upset at you for talking to them too much before you can even do that. They just need to mix the contextual dialogue randomly with normal dialogue and talking with villagers would be so much more enjoyable.
Would also really like to see custom exhibits in the museum come back. I don't really care about collectible item sets, but I definitely would if I could display them in the museum.
If you have a Switch I'd definitely recommend that version, as most of the community has moved on to it. However, the 3DS version still has plenty of programs you can find that are available for it. You can't really go wrong with either, but the Switch version is technically the best unless you'd like access to 3DS exclusive features like stereoscopic 3D or dual screens.
Seriously, I'm done with ports. Wii U ports made sense since the console didn't sell well, but 3DS games don't need ports. The console sold great and so did the best games on it. I'm ready for Nintendo to start focusing on brand new experiences again.
This CANNOT be the whole story. No way any company in their right mind would cancel a project over leaks. If true though, that's absolutely awful. Just watched Fantastic Mr. Fox and a Star Fox series in that style would have been perfect.

Re: Talking Point: What's Your Comfort Food Game?
For me, Donkey Kong Country 2, Myst, Riven, and any Animal Crossing game of course!
Re: Nintendo Is Resurrecting Its Game & Watch Line To Celebrate 35 Years Of Super Mario
