Re: Zen Studios Under Fire For Censorship In Pinball FX3, Explains It Was To Keep Game "Family-Friendly"

mystman12

I really hate how much hate Zen is getting for this. They've worked hard to create something great for pinball fans. You can tell they put a lot of passion into these recreations. They look wonderful, and they play wonderful. The censorship is the only real issue, and while I agree with others in that I hope a workaround can be found, I hate seeing people say such terrible things about Zen because of it. No, they're not SJWs. I doubt SJWs would want to touch pinball with a 10 foot pole. No, there are some good reasons why the censorship was deemed necessary by Zen. Not only would some of the content require additional descriptors (Which would cause a lot of complications), but they also have some deals with big companies, mainly Disney, who very likely require a certain age rating to be maintained.

I've seen some people say that censorship is the worst thing that could happen to pinball, but I feel that Zen not getting the license would have been worse than this. Farsight's versions were often buggy and way too easy, and you were often seeing people complaining about the issues with TPA rather than actually enjoying the games. I for one was getting tired of having an hour long game every time I decided to play Twilight Zone. I have a good feeling that Zen's recreations will always be quality and always play well, and that's something that can get people into pinball. I've already seen people talk about how they actually like Fish Tales now after playing the Zen version, noting that they didn't enjoy the TPA version.

Finally, for those who are saying kids aren't going to be playing this, I just want to say that I played Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection when I was about 10 years old, and that got me hooked on pinball which practically changed my life. Obviously I'm the minority, but if people end up playing this, young or old, and end up getting into pinball, that's going to help the hobby far more than the censorship here is going to hurt it.

Re: Zen Studios Under Fire For Censorship In Pinball FX3, Explains It Was To Keep Game "Family-Friendly"

mystman12

@Anwpro Have you even tried the Williams tables yet? They play a hundred times better in Zen than in The Pinball Arcade. I love Farsight for The Pinball Arcade, but I'm also super excited to have such a huge improvement over their game. There's no way I can go back to play TPA versions now that I've played the Zen versions.

@Teksetter I've played all of the original pins in this pack IRL and I understand why Zen made this decision. It goes deeper than Zen "staying family friendly." They have agreements with companies like Disney and I can only assume they have to make them happy. I hope they can come up with a solution, but ultimately I'd rather the mild censorship happen than not get this at all.

Re: Fans' Passion For Waluigi's Smash Exclusion Is "Fantastic", Says Nintendo's Andrew Collins

mystman12

@CrimsonMoonMist @Syrek24 @Tarolusa @Syrek24 Sakurai was never harassed. It was a couple of young teens (Who later apologized even) being stupid. Of course when the media picked up on it all Waluigi fans got thrown under the bus with them. The amount of people getting notably angry over Waluigi's absence or harassing Sakurai is incredibly small, yet as with literally any fanbase, sadly seem to get the most attention. It's a shame when entire fanbases become hated because of the few bad apples.

For the record, I'm pretty big Waluigi fan, but I honestly don't think he'll get in Smash any time soon. He needs at least one game of his own first.

Re: Zen Studios Acquires Bally And Williams Pinball Licence, Tables Headed To Pinball FX3

mystman12

@masterLEON Wait, since when has Zaccaria been on Switch? How did I not know about this? I'll definitely have to pick up a few of those tables!

@blackknight77 @JayJ They've completely reworked their physics for these classic games. I've spent a bit of time playing the beta now and I can safely say they're pretty fantastic! I think things could still use some tweaking (flippers are too strong when it comes to smaller swings, for example), but overall it's way better and feels much more realistic than TPA. Hopefully the other small issues will be worked out before the official release.

Re: Zen Studios Acquires Bally And Williams Pinball Licence, Tables Headed To Pinball FX3

mystman12

At first I wasn't sure how to feel about this. Felt kind of bad for Farsight and have never been a big fan of Zen's games.

Then I tried the beta though and wow, this is top notch. Physics are fantastic, the games look beutiful, and the difficulty is pretty much perfect (You won't be getting marathon game after marathon game in this like you would in The Pinball Arcade). This really is the best of both worlds - You gets Zen's quality and their fantastic interface, mixed with real-pinball themes and rulesets, something Zen's original games just can't hold a candle to. I hope that long-time Zen players try these out and get into playing pinball IRL because of it.

Re: Poor Old Wario Had Just Two Days To Top The NPD Game Charts In July

mystman12

@Not_Soos Took the words out of my mouth. Every single challenge mode is something I want to keep coming back to! Definitely my favorite WarioWare as far as single player is concerned.

I really hope the reason it seems to be doing so poorly is because most people are getting it digitally. It really is the perfect kind of game to have downloaded, and I'm really glad I decided to go that route.

Re: Nintendo's Lawsuit Against Mobile Developer Colopl Won't Stop Release Of White Cat Project On Switch

mystman12

See, this sort of thing kind of scares me away from mobile development. If I were to bring, say, a first person game to mobile, I'd like to try out some new things for the touch controls, but then part of me's terrified that someone will come at me claiming I infringed on their patent I didn't even know about.

Anyways, I really don't understand why on Earth Nintendo is suing this company. Like, they used an on-screen control stick... Like thousands of other mobile games do. Perhaps there are other patent issues that were more serious that haven't been made public, and they just threw the on-screen sick patent in there too, but I really have no idea.

Re: Get Ready For The World Cup With World Soccer Pinball, Shooting Onto Switch This Week

mystman12

Well, it looks better than Jurassic Pinball.. but not by much. It's become obvious to me at this point they're obviously using Pinball Creator off of the Unity Asset store (https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/templates/systems/pinball-creator-74772). Also, I still can't believe they're trying to push the idea that these are "perfect recreations." Those ramps are horribly designed, that massive spot target is ridiculous, the shot to the spinner leads nowhere, the shot to the left orbit seems near impossible. I could go on and on.

Re: Welcome To Jurassic Pinball, Launching 25th May On Nintendo Switch

mystman12

Yeah this looks pretty bad... First off the playfield art is just the translite image re-used and isn't integrated with the playfield design at all. The theme is ridiculously generic and uninspired. Also, I'm pretty sure the DMD is just displaying Unity's default font and isn't actually using dots. This is only going to be about as good as all the mediocre pinball games on mobile devices at best.

Re: Flipping Heck, That Pinball FX3 Switch Patch Is Coming After All

mystman12

@madmatt213 Actually, many machines with upper flippers in real life have dual staged flipper buttons, which allow you to fire only the lower flipper with light pressure, and then any upper flippers with full pressure. This feature is very useful in games that have shots that are blocked by active upper flippers. I know some version of The Pinball Arcade actually support this with analog triggers. Not sure if Zen has ever supported such a feature.

Re: GameMaker Studio 2 Comes To Nintendo Switch

mystman12

@aaronsullivan Ha, yeah that's what I've heard. I actually joined the Meta Game Jam which starts in a week. I'm like, 99% sure I won't finish whatever I decide to make in time, but I'm going to give it a shot regardless. I'm trying to keep it reasonably small... But reasonably small probably isn't enough, is it?

Re: GameMaker Studio 2 Comes To Nintendo Switch

mystman12

Game Maker not supporting Switch was the only thing keeping me from considering it, so now that it's supported I have to decide between Unity and this... Obviously, my first game is going to be 2D. Any advice on which engine is better?

Re: Code Your Own Games On Switch With The Return Of Petit Computer

mystman12

Part of me is super excited, as I've always loved Petit Computer/SmileBASIC, but another part of me realises I don't really have the time for it anymore. I currently have a pinball game I'm working on that's coming along better than ever before, I want to start working in Unity one I finish that, and now I have NES Maker to look forward to later this year. Regardless, SmileBASIC is fun just to mess around with and play other people's creations, so I'll definitely pick this up once it releases.

Re: Build Your Own Game, Flash It To A Cartridge And Play It On Your NES With NESMaker

mystman12

Huh, this seems pretty interesting. Programs like this, that claim to require no coding, always do have limitations, but like, I would never take the time to learn how to make NES games from scratch, nor would I ever want to spend too much time working on an NES game in the first place (I've got too many other, more important projects). Something like this could certainly be good fun for just messing around making silly games, which is always fun. Definitely interested.

Re: Feature: Here's What Was Announced During The January 2018 Nintendo Direct Mini

mystman12

Don't forget that Celeste's release date was announced! Day one purchase for me, it's going to be fantastic!

Other than that, the DK DLC for Mario + Rabbids is going to be the push I needed to buy the game, and of course I'll be re-buying Tropical Freeze once that comes out.

But, as I'm sure we can all agree, the best news was the Sunshine outfit coming to Odyssey!

Re: Video: The 21 Best GameCube Games Money Can Buy

mystman12

At this point, whenever I see something GameCube related online, I feel like an auditor who has to come in and make sure Kirby Air Ride is mentioned...

On that note, since you failed to mention KAR in this video, you guys get a strike. I'll be back in two weeks, and if you haven't corrected this error by then I'm going to have to shut NL down.

Re: Review: Stern Pinball Arcade (Switch eShop)

mystman12

Yeah, this review isn't that great. As many people have mentioned, the reviewer did seem to miss the point of SPA. I can understand someone just not enjoying these machines as much as Zen, but the complaints here don't focus on the aspects of the games that really matter and it sounds like the reviewer never really dug into the machines. The reviewer complains about how the the machines don't have the latest licenses (Licenses ultimately are the least important part of a pinball game. There are great pinball machines with awful licenses (eg The Shadow) and awful pinball machines with great licenses (eg Street Fighter II)) and how the games featured in SPA are so much "simpler" compared to Zen's offerings. Sure, Zen's games are bright and flashy, but the games in SPA, especially the newer ones, have much more depth when it comes to things to do and strategies to take. Gameplay is where it really counts. Not to mention the fantastic thought and engineering that went into designing these games in the first place (Obviously harder to appreciate in digital form, but still). Also find it funny how the reviewer mentions The Walking Dead as something you wouldn't see here when Stern actually did a Walking Dead machine a few years ago. Hopefully it comes to SPA some time.

There are valid complaints too though. No online leader boards, or even hotseat multiplayer are big omissions. Online leader boards are standard for pinball games these days and, as all these machines are either emulated or use the exact same code as the real life machines, which already have multiplayer fully programmed, multiplayer should be extremely simple to implement. And yeah, these recreations don't look nearly as nice as they do IRL, which is a shame. If they did, there's no way this guy would ever use the word "jaded" to describe them.

In the conclusion, the reviewer states that this game shows why pinball has lost traction in recent years, but the funny thing is, pinball has been on the rise in the past few years and is currently the biggest it's been since the early 90s. Many of the newer games here are part of that rise. AC/DC currently ranks at #10 on Pinside's top 100 list (based off of user reviews of the machines), Stern Star Trek at #11, and Ghostbusters at #29. Again, I get it if the reviewer didn't enjoy these games as much as Zen's, but at least give us proper reasons why instead of just telling us that Zen has better licenses than Stern.

Re: Feature: Vote For Your 2017 Nintendo Life Game of the Year

mystman12

Easily Breath of the Wild. I still haven't beat it but I'm still really enjoying it! After that would either be Mario Odyssey or Sonic Mania... and call me crazy but I think I might actually give Sonic Mania the edge over Odyssey. I can't really put my finger on why, but looking back I feel like I just had more fun with Mania...

Re: Review: Pinball FX3 (Switch eShop)

mystman12

I wouldn't call this the "definitive pinball title." Don't get me wrong, Zen is great, but it's not for everybody, myself included. I'm so glad we have both Zen and The Pinball Arcade, as both games combined offer something for everybody.

I'm going to keep trying to get into Zen though. I think I just need to go into their tables with different expectations than I do with real life machines.

Re: Nintendo is Close to a Major Deal for a New Mario Bros. Movie

mystman12

@Snow-Dust Hate to break it to you, but Dreamworks was bought by the same company that owns Illumination and is now heading in the same direction.

But yeah, the moment I read "Illumination" I pretty much lost interest. I actually love Despicable Me, but after that their movies have all been either meh or just bad. I was able to tell Sing was made for the sole purpose of making money the moment I saw the first trailer, and I can't stand seeing the minions everywhere... Oh gosh, I just realized, Mario + Minions could actually be a thing now...

Re: Mario Party: The Top 100 Trailer Showcases Modes and amiibo Functionality

mystman12

Wow, I was literally just thinking "Man, Top 100 is so close, new info could drop any moment."

I wish they went into more depth on the board mode. Now we know it's similar to Star Rush's Balloon Bash, I just hope they've fixed that modes flaws. I'm already seeing the item spaces everywhere which is a shame, I'd much rather they just bring item shops back.

Re: Random: Nineties Kids, Rejoice - Tamagotchis Are Making A Comeback

mystman12

I had a couple of these growing up. They were either V3, 4, or 5, not sure. I really loved them at the time and they kept my attention longer than most games did back then. I even have a distinct memory of when one died. I had forgot to bring it to a piano recital (Which would have been fine since the versions I had had the ability to be muted) and realized after getting there that it might not make it. After getting home though, I completely forgot about it and when straight to my computer. After about minute, I heard it. It died right after I got home, and if I hadn't forgotten about it I might have actually been able save it!
