Re: Create Your Own Games On Switch With SmileBASIC 4, Available Next Week

mystman12

I bought the Japanese version when that launched almost a year ago and got started on a small project. I'm a bit too busy with my current job at the moment but I'm hoping I'll be able to get back to SmileBASIC soon!

@Zenszulu You can create your own music with this! It uses MML but I also wouldn't be surprised if someone's already created a tool for easier music creation.

@tekknik Well to be fair, Petit Computer (The first version of this software) was my first foray into programming and now I'm developing a game in Unity for a living. While the language is somewhat outdated, you're still learning how to program and how to think like a programmer. Admittedly, I needed to "unlearn" a few things when I picked up C#, but I still think SmileBASIC is a very good language for people to begin learning how to program.

@JayJ For me programming on a handheld is a lot more relaxing than on my PC, mainly since my PC is where I work. I can just sit on the couch and chip away at a silly little program with the touch-screen keyboard (Which I'll add is probably the best on the Switch. Nintendo's default Switch keyboard is awful).

Re: Planet Entertainment Says It's "Fully Within Its Rights" To Publish Cooking Mama: Cookstar

mystman12

This is ridiculous. If the IP holder says "You can't do that"... You can't do that. It's as simple as that. Unless Office Create signed some deceitful contract that allowed the publisher to do whenever they want there's no way that they can legally release the game.

It doesn't matter if you've made the best game in the world, it doesn't matter if what you develop perfectly matches what the IP holder requested or approved, if they say no, that's it. You can't do anything until you get their approval.

Re: You Might Not Be Able To Transfer Animal Crossing: New Horizons Save Data To Another Switch

mystman12

@Crockin What the heck does that have to do with anything?! If you want to do restaurant comparisons to Animal Crossing, the current situation is like this:

Guy: "Oh look the waiter is coming with my food!"
Waiter: Trips and falls and spills entire meal on the floor
Guy: "Oh no, well at least the manager will offer me a free replacement meal since I lost it at no fault of my own"
Manager: "Nope. Some minuscule percentage of customers manipulated us into giving them free meals by pretending we messed up their order, so in order to prevent that from happening we now have a policy against replacing ruined meals. You'll just have to buy another meal if you want it."

The meal is Animal Crossing save data, the guy is a consumer, the waiter is a Switch, and the manager is Nintendo. Your comparison implies people are asking for weird, oddly specific game features, but no one is. People are asking for a very basic feature that is already available for other games, but Nintendo refuses to offer it for this one for ridiculous reasons.

Just like there's no excuse for a restaurant to not replace your meal if they spill it everywhere, there's no excuse for Nintendo not to allow you to restore a backup of all your save data when their console fails. Especially when they already have the feature implemented on other games and they are withholding it from the consumer.

If they're concerned about people exploiting cloud backups to duplicate items? Fine. Make it so Animal Crossing saves can only be restored by tech support, who will only do so if it hasn't been restored recently and if they can verify you have a valid reason. Boom. Problem solved.

If it's a technical challenge due to multiple users sharing a bunch of save data? Cool. Simply make it so that you can select a primary user who's account uploads all the save data to the cloud, while the other users don't have anything uploaded to the cloud, even if multiple users have Switch Online. This is NIntendo, they are fully capable of solving any technical hurdles that come their way.

And this whole thing about not being able to transfer save data to another system is even more insane. Hopefully it's not true. But going back to the restaurant comparisons that would be like requesting to move to another table and the manager saying "Oh yeah, of course you can do that! You'll have to leave all your food behind though and order again. We will not allow you to take this food you've already ordered to the new table." Again, it's absolutely insane and there's no excuse for it.

Obviously Nintendo doesn't just want users to be able to clone islands, so why don't they, oh I don't know, allow users to choose between moving the island with them or just their profile to a new Switch? If a user transferring to a new Switch chooses to take the island with them, they get everything on their Switch while the users left on the old Switch can start out on a new island. If the user chooses to transfer their character only, they get to start on a new Island while the old switch users get to keep the old island. Again, problem solved.

Nintendo should have been planning on supporting these features from the very beginning of the game's development. They should have made sure that the saving system would be compatible with cloud saves and system transfers (Again, both basic features everyone expects to be available by default, one of which you have to pay for) and spent some time actually thinking of a way to prevent cheating instead of just taking the easy way out and just disabling cloud saves.

...I can't believe how long this ended up being.

Re: Talking Point: Would You Like Miiverse To Return On Switch?

mystman12

I loved Miiverse and would love to have it back! It was cool to have a community for every single game, so you could easily interact with other fans of those games. That sort of thing doesn't happen on Twitter unless your followers also happen to be interested in the same games as you.

I particularly loved the SmileBASIC community as it was a fantastic way to share games and offer help to people trying to learn how to program with it. Having it all built into the system made it the absolute best way to do that at the time. With SmileBASIC Switch released in Japan and likely to release in the west at some point, it would be so nice to be able to have Miiverse back again to create a new community for it.

Re: Nintendo's President Explains "Embarrassing" Lack Of Financial Support For Smash Bros. eSports

mystman12

@PickledKong64 "And competitive smash is not talent."

I... I'm sorry?! How on Earth is competetive Smash anything but talent? You think people win completely randomly? You need to be extremely talented at Smash to be top player.

Also you'd be surprised how many people wouldn't consider those things "real jobs." The fact of the matter is, if a person can make a living doing something, it's their job, and it's no less "real" than any other (Unless it's illegal or something). If a Smash player can manage to make a living playing Smash, that's a job they have.

Re: Review: Dr Kawashima's Brain Training for Nintendo Switch - Not Quite As Smart 14 Years On

mystman12

This really seems like a bit of a downgrade from Concentration Training. The main thing is that the devilish training exercises actually do seem to be helping me concentrate better (I've been playing it regularly for over a month now and have noticed some big improvements) while the normal brain training doesn't really seem to do much for me (I haven't noticed any effects like being able to think more quickly or clearly or anything like that). Without any sort of soncentration focused exercises I have no interest. Concentration Training also had very good voice acting, some great competitive features (I still have some StreetPass rivals to try and beat), and a Wario's Woods styled game called Bomb Blast to go along with Virus Buster. This game just seems to be lacking in content in comparison.

Re: Doug Bowser's Favourite Video Game May Surprise You

mystman12

From the article's tag line my first thought was Riven, which I feel is better than Myst in pretty much every way, but still, it's super cool to see someone so high up at Nintendo is a big fan. Maybe there's a chance Atrus can get into Smash after all.

Re: Nintendo Releases The Stretchers, A New Co-Op Rescue Game For Switch

mystman12

This looks awesome! It reminds me of a game I used to play a ton as a kid called Matchbox Emergency Patrol. The gameplay only consisted of driving to the location of the emergency and watching a cutscene, but what made it actually fun was how you could basically drive anywhere in the city, and it had tons of destructible elements and crazy physics, a lot like this. Really hope it comes to the States.

Re: Flipper Mechanic Is An Upcoming Switch Game Where You Fix And Test Classic Arcade Machines

mystman12

@somebread For sure, working on pins is pretty fun (That is until you drop a screw somewhere and have to find it to make sure it didn't land on a board creating a short circuit that could damage the machine if you turn it on... ), but I suppose it might be hard to make realistic pin repair fun in a video game, which might explain some of the weird changes from real life.

I hope that's the reasoning for all the weirdness anyways. If it turns out this guy has just never even looked up a video on how to repair a pinball machine, I'd be interested in trying this just to see how inaccurate it gets, haha.

Re: Flipper Mechanic Is An Upcoming Switch Game Where You Fix And Test Classic Arcade Machines

mystman12

This game could be cool, but as someone who works with real pinball machines... I can't stand how inaccurate this looks, haha. Like, nearly everything is wrong. Irl you access the underside of a playfield by removing the glass and then lifting the playfield up, not pulling the side of the cabinet off. Irl you access the computer boards by removing the front panel with the artwork in the head, and then swinging open a board that holds all the backglass lights, but in this game you remove a panel from the backside of the machine. It all makes me wonder if the developer has actually ever seen a real pinball machine.

Also, I can see a lot of artwork from real pinball machines in that trailer, and somehow I get the feeling none of it has been properly licensed...

Re: Fans Left "Disappointed" At Developer Atooi's Attitude Towards Chicken Wiggle Switch Kickstarter

mystman12

Yeah, that update came off pretty bad to me, not gonna lie. Kickstarter backers aren't investors, sure, but they're still people who have given money to help bring your project to life, and they deserve to know what's going on at all times. It's not hard to make regular updates either. I know because I've been making at least one update pretty much every month on my Kickstarter as I work on my game, and each one usually only takes a few hours to put together. There's no reason why a person shouldn't be able to take a few hours once a month or so to let backers know what's up. It's not only the right thing to do, it also helps maintain a good relationship between you and your backers.

Hopefully this guy will begin doing small updates like he posted today with some regularity. A couple paragraphs and a few photos won't take long and backers will be happy to receive anything to let them know what progress is being made.

Re: Magical 2D Platformer Enchanted Portals Accused Of Being A Cuphead Clone

mystman12

There's been a lot hate towards them yeah, but also a surprisingly large amount of constructive criticism from people who seem to want to see them succeed. I really hope they don't ignore the legitimate criticisms as "hate" because they really do need to listen to that feedback. All they need to do is give the game play something it can call its own and I think they'll be much more successful. If they decide to listen only to the people doing nothing but praising them this likely won't end as well as it could.

Re: Pinball Joins Hamster's Arcade Archives Series This Week

mystman12

Man, $8 is a lot considering you can get much better games for Pinball FX3 or even The Pinball Arcade for less per game (PFX3 packs cost $10, but you get 3 games, making each $3.33!). NES Pinball is a neat little game to try out every now and then, but it's a bit too simplistic to hold anyone's attention for long.

Re: Nintendo Music Copyright Takedowns Intensify As Another Prominent YouTuber Gets Hit

mystman12

I will buy all the Nintendo music that I've downloaded onto my music library the moment it becomes available to purchase, but until that happens I'm not just going to not listen to my favorite music. It would be fantastic if Nintendo finally added all (And I mean all) their music to the common music services. Unfortunately though, even if they do start uploading their soundtracks, they'll probably take a Virtual Console approach where they only do a couple games a week, and many games they'll probably just never get around to.

Re: Review: ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove - A '90s Throwback That Might Be Too Random For Some

mystman12

@kameryn There's nothing from the full version that I'm currently working on that's available to play yet, but the original version (Which I think would best be described as a proof of concept) is available for download. It's lacking a lot of the features I'm putting in the full version (Like randomly generated levels), but the core ideas are still intact. I don't want to advertise here, but if you search my username on Itch.io you'll find it along with another proof of concept for a camping minigame.

Re: Review: ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove - A '90s Throwback That Might Be Too Random For Some

mystman12

Reading this review has made me realize just how much Toejam and Earl has inspired the game I'm working on, and I've only played the original a few times! I really enjoyed it though and I think it's safe to say that a lot of the game's design ideas stuck with me. I'll definitely pick this up, I just hope I can find someone to play it with. Asking my friends to play the original with me has sort of become an inside joke because they couldn't stand it the first time they played and I know they'll never want to try it again. Still, I really enjoy the wackiness and the sense of surprise and discovery in the original game, so I'm sure I'll get a kick out if this.

Re: Zen Studios Under Fire For Censorship In Pinball FX3, Explains It Was To Keep Game "Family-Friendly"

mystman12

@Anwpro I actually never really liked Zen pinball either. Still not a huge fan of their fantasy tables. They made a more realistic, improved physics engine for the Williams tables though, and it's so much better than the physics in TPA. Not to mention that everything looks nicer too. I understand if you don't want to make a purchase due to the censorship, but at the very least Fishtales is definitely worth trying out since it's free!

Re: Zen Studios Under Fire For Censorship In Pinball FX3, Explains It Was To Keep Game "Family-Friendly"

mystman12

I really hate how much hate Zen is getting for this. They've worked hard to create something great for pinball fans. You can tell they put a lot of passion into these recreations. They look wonderful, and they play wonderful. The censorship is the only real issue, and while I agree with others in that I hope a workaround can be found, I hate seeing people say such terrible things about Zen because of it. No, they're not SJWs. I doubt SJWs would want to touch pinball with a 10 foot pole. No, there are some good reasons why the censorship was deemed necessary by Zen. Not only would some of the content require additional descriptors (Which would cause a lot of complications), but they also have some deals with big companies, mainly Disney, who very likely require a certain age rating to be maintained.

I've seen some people say that censorship is the worst thing that could happen to pinball, but I feel that Zen not getting the license would have been worse than this. Farsight's versions were often buggy and way too easy, and you were often seeing people complaining about the issues with TPA rather than actually enjoying the games. I for one was getting tired of having an hour long game every time I decided to play Twilight Zone. I have a good feeling that Zen's recreations will always be quality and always play well, and that's something that can get people into pinball. I've already seen people talk about how they actually like Fish Tales now after playing the Zen version, noting that they didn't enjoy the TPA version.

Finally, for those who are saying kids aren't going to be playing this, I just want to say that I played Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection when I was about 10 years old, and that got me hooked on pinball which practically changed my life. Obviously I'm the minority, but if people end up playing this, young or old, and end up getting into pinball, that's going to help the hobby far more than the censorship here is going to hurt it.

Re: Zen Studios Under Fire For Censorship In Pinball FX3, Explains It Was To Keep Game "Family-Friendly"

mystman12

@Anwpro Have you even tried the Williams tables yet? They play a hundred times better in Zen than in The Pinball Arcade. I love Farsight for The Pinball Arcade, but I'm also super excited to have such a huge improvement over their game. There's no way I can go back to play TPA versions now that I've played the Zen versions.

@Teksetter I've played all of the original pins in this pack IRL and I understand why Zen made this decision. It goes deeper than Zen "staying family friendly." They have agreements with companies like Disney and I can only assume they have to make them happy. I hope they can come up with a solution, but ultimately I'd rather the mild censorship happen than not get this at all.
