Re: Talking Point: Our Favourites From E3 2021

mjharper

I loved the surprises and reveals, but ultimately, it was all about the new Zelda for me. Not a big surprise, it's my favorite game series, and anything new from it would've made best of show for me, but I can't describe how much I'm looking forward to that game.

Re: Metroid Games You Need To Play Before Metroid Dread

mjharper

I'm kind of stuck in the middle of Super Metroid. I'll get back on it eventually. That's what happens when I start a game when I'm already playing through another game (or two or three). But Super Metroid is a classic. I've enjoyed my time with it so far, which is saying a lot given that it's my first playthrough of an old game.

Re: Roundup: Here's What Was Revealed In Nintendo Direct E3 2021

mjharper

Very, very fun Direct. There were lots of surprises there (Metroid, WarioWare, Advance Wars, etc.), and while I didn't really add anything new to the wishlist, I feel like Nintendo put out a really strong list of announcements there. Cannot wait for the next Zelda, whatever they decide to name it.

Re: Feature: What's Your Most Treasured Club Nintendo Possession?

mjharper

I used to get the calendars every year for my office, and I still have a 3DS bag with the Club Nintendo logo on it, and the red/yellow/green/blue Wii remote wristbands that Club Nintendo offered to tie in with New Super Mario Bros. Wii. That's still the only way I can tell my Wii remotes apart.

Re: Feature: Nintendo's Most Iconic E3 Moments

mjharper

Great memories, thanks for the post. I chose the Breath of the Wild gameplay reveal, but I thoroughly enjoyed rewatching all of these, especially the puppets. Nintendo used to put a lot of effort into these presentations, and I'm thinking it had more to do with the personality of the people involved (Iwata-san primarily) than the direction the company's marketing is going. I remember watching them live and thinking, get past all of the theatrics, I want to know about the games! Now I enjoy watching the silly puppet show more than I did playing any of the games announced that year. This year's E3 "digital event" will probably be more of the current presentation format - game announcement, gameplay video, rinse and repeat - which isn't bad, since we all just want to know what games are coming, but it's very generic and lifeless compared to the highlights posted here. It's also interesting also how much more bravado Reggie and Iwata had in the 2000's, I'm guessing as a way to appeal more to American audiences. I can't see any Nintendo staff saying they were playing Smash Bros last night and were kicking you-know-what.

Re: Superman Has A Gun In Fortnite's New Alien-Themed Season

mjharper

Not my thing, but my 12-year-old son is loving the new season so far. I’ll second the randomness comment - they went from dinosaur and primal season straight into alien season. Huh?

I don’t think Samus is happening. If she was coming to the game as a skin (which would be weird, because she wouldn’t be able to use her arm cannon), she would’ve been a natural fit during the bounty hunter season, which has already ended. That’s when Master Chief showed up.

Re: Talking Point: With Sony And Microsoft In Next-Gen Limbo, E3 Is Nintendo's For The Taking

mjharper

It's a good time to be a Nintendo system owner. Lots of great games, promising new games coming, and even quality third-party support, all on a system that can be played literally anywhere. The fact that we're even talking about Nintendo being in a position to take advantage of its position over Sony and Microsoft would've been laughable 5 or so years ago. No matter what Nintendo shows at E3, the gamers are the true winners.

That said, I can't wait for more info on The Sequel.

Re: The Pokémon Company Recorded Its Highest Profits Ever In 2020

mjharper

Wow. I don't think I realized how not-so-profitable the Pokemon Company was prior to the release of Pokemon Go. I realize the last few years throw off the scale of that Y-axis, but I wouldn't have guessed with as popular as Pokemon are that the company would have posted net losses a couple times in the past decade.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch 'Pro' Reveal Expected Before E3, Out This Year

mjharper

It'll be interesting to see (assuming this does come out in 2021) how well stocked it will be. You can't even buy the original Switch in stores right now (actually, as long as you don't mind an Animal Crossing-themed Switch, they had those at Target last weekend). Unless you want a Mario Game & Watch, there's no systems available for anyone these days (Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo).

But I'm still in the "don't believe it until I see it" mode on this rumor, and I'm kind of sick of hearing about it.

Re: Nintendo Reveals New Zelda & Loftwing amiibo For Skyward Sword HD

mjharper

I was kind of hoping they were going to pack it in with the game like with Twilight Princess HD years ago. As it is, even though I’m fond of this incarnation of Zelda, I’ll probably skip the amiibo. There isn’t really that much of a need to teleport from the ground to the air and vice versa that can’t be handled at a statue. I would’ve hoped something like the extra dungeon from Twilight Princess HD would’ve been locked behind the amiibo.

Re: Video: Game Boy Advance On Nintendo Switch Online? Here's How It Could Look

mjharper

This would be super awesome and a great surprise. But at this point you have to wonder why Nintendo hasn't already done this. Or the original GameBoy. Or the N64. The DS. The Gamecube.

I'm starting to wonder if Nintendo analytics has figured out that it's not worth the time and effort to add these games/emulated systems because it's not driving up subscriber numbers/revenue.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (May 1st)

mjharper

Now that I've made as much progress in Super Mario 3D World as I did on the Wii U (up to the final level, but never able to actually beat it), I got reacquainted with Octopath Traveler this past weekend, making progress in it for the first time since last December. I forgot how much fun that game is.

Re: Feature: Best NES Games

mjharper

I have fond memories of the NES. This was the system I waited months for before I finally got it under the Christmas tree back in the 80's. I've been a Nintendo fan ever since. "The greatest Christmas gift I had ever received, or would ever receive."
