It's a strange time in gaming, especially if your main platforms of choice are PlayStation or Xbox. Both systems do — despite often hysterical takes found on social media — have plenty of games to play. What PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S don't have is an overabundance of new 'next gen' exclusives.
Microsoft's system has practically none, at least from a first-party perspective, but can keep its players pretty happy with multi-platform titles and the ever-growing Game Pass. On PS5 there are a small number of critically-acclaimed exclusives, albeit saddled with debates around pricing, Returnal being a good example.
In any case, here we are near the middle of 2021 and the first-party release slates for both of Nintendo's platform rivals are relatively thin. Sony has 'delayed' God of War Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7 to 2022, though the previous suggestion that either would actually arrive this year always seemed rather fanciful; it will aim to fill its blockbuster quota this year with Horizon Forbidden West. On top of that, these games will also come to PS4, surprisingly in the case of the first two; that's been a topic with some feisty debate. This is also in the context that Sony isn't taking part in E3, so pushed out those announcements ahead of the industry event.
Potentially the most important point, though, is that stock is extremely hard to find for the new consoles, and may remain that way for much of this year.
Xbox will have an E3 showcase - alongside the recently acquired Bethesda - and is likely to have Microsoft Flight Simulator, Halo Infinite, Psychonauts 2 and, well, anything else it can squeeze out in 2021. This is off the back of relatively quiet first halves of the year, remember, and while we have little doubt that both powerhouses will have a small number of surprises up their sleeves, it'll go down as rather slow first year — in terms of new software — for those systems; current global circumstances have of course played a big part in that. Potentially the most important point, though, is that stock is extremely hard to find for the new consoles, and may remain that way for much of this year.
Anyway, this is Nintendo Life, but we're just scene-setting; not in a lame 'console wars' manner — we think both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are awesome systems that offer something different from Switch. Yet in the broader picture of the mainstream games industry this stuff matters; Nintendo is still, like it was in 2020, well placed to capitalise.
Though Nintendo's sales projections for this year are a drop on the Animal Crossing-fueled boom of 2020, they're still very high. And why not? Even if we sideline the rolling rumours (two years+ of them!) about a hardware revision / upgrade, Nintendo's momentum for Switch continues to be impressive. The company has faced and will still have to address potential manufacturing challenges, like all technology companies, but with its established processes and userbase it's been able to maintain progress.
This is also a time when the relative lack of grunt in the Switch has been a benefit, too. It's a hybrid portable device, so games top out at 1080p and expectations around visual fidelity and performance are suitably modest. You won't see Digital Foundry breaking down the Miitopia port or counting pixels in New Pokémon Snap or the Famicom Detective games, but these are titles that look nice on the system and are typical Nintendo fun. Add to that the eShop's gems and some very solid third-party releases — an obvious standout being Monster Hunter Rise — and there's been good stuff to play in the first half of the year.
As it did in the console's first year, Nintendo is pretty much delivering on a 'big' game a month, with Mario Golf: Super Rush and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD on the way soon, and the intriguing Game Builder Garage arriving before both of those. That gets us to August and September, which is where the upcoming E3 Direct will really have a chance to set the scene.
We already have Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl arriving in the lucrative Holiday season, but there's little doubt that the E3 Direct will fill in some other gaps; Nintendo often allows only a few months from announcement to release for various titles. For example, will there be other games to celebrate The Legend of Zelda's big anniversary? Breath of the Wild 2 feels unlikely for this year, we would suggest, but a smaller release or another 'HD' remake seems sensible. There are whispers about a new Metroid game, as always, though to say Metroid Prime 4 is probably still 'a way off' is likely an understatement. But this is Nintendo, there'll be releases no-one's really thought of yet, and though plenty of people seem to fancy themselves to be prolific leakers of industry secrets, Nintendo has managed to surprise us quite a bit in recent times.
Nintendo, as has been the way since Satoru Iwata shifted the focus with DS and Wii, can deliver experiences more focused on smart design and fun gameplay.
And again, this is ignoring third-party releases, of which there are a number to be excited about. No More Heroes III is on plenty of wishlists, that's for sure, and there are more RPGs on the way than we dare to count. And though Nintendo's internal development teams will have endured the same difficult challenges and changes to processes as every other major studio over the last 15 months, most of them are not producing massive open-world games in 4K with a pressure to deliver extravagant visuals. Nintendo, as has been the way since Satoru Iwata shifted the focus with DS and Wii, can deliver experiences more focused on smart design and fun gameplay, without the expectation of pushing technological boundaries.
With PS5 and Xbox Series X|S seemingly caught in a holding pattern as the platform holders await the completion of their exclusive titles and struggle to even match demand for the hardware, Nintendo has a unique opportunity to seize the day with its software. With a strong E3 showing, and with the ongoing logistical challenges faced by its console rivals, 2021 could be another dynamic and dominant year for the Switch.
We're excited to see how the schedule for the rest of the year looks after that E3 Nintendo Direct has wrapped. As always let us know whether you share our optimism in the comments!

In the Switch era E3 has often been saved by Nintendo, this year will be no different.
Mannnn I'm getting so impatient! Literally counting down the days lmao
I'm really interested in what Microsoft has to announce for E3 if only because most of their first party software seems at best, years off from release with maybe the exception of Hellblade.
Nintendo has it way easier this year if only because I don't expect the Xbox conference to blow my mind in terms of games they have positioned for the near future outside Halo and Forza, and Sony's not even showing up at all (which I do miss their presence to be fair)
Nintendos E3 will consist of games we know about releasing this year!! Keep hype levels low! Thats treehouse sorted with zelda skywardsword, mario golf and pokemon dazz/gleam remakes.
Also no hollow knight silksong information has been confirmed which is one I am eager for.
Not setting myself up for disappointment like previous directs but still excited for what we know is coming.
@Rika_Yoshitake I really only watch e3 yo see what nintendo is planning
Keeping my expectations low - still remember the Wii music demonstration from 2008.
This remind me of the pre E3 2008 buzz where after releasing Brawl and Mario Kart Wii Nintendo was set to unleash a new onslaught of games we never knew we wanted which turned out to just be Animal Crossing City Life and Wii Music.
Just give us Starfox 64 remastered and a new Mario Kart ( or even more dlc for Mario Kart 8 deluxe ).
So Switch Pro was yet another fake rumour? Next the press will tell us all the coronavirus didn't come from the Wuhan lab
I will appreciate anything that is shown. It's easy to forget, living in the UK, that most of the world still has a state of emergency (and the way our infection rate is climbing, I wouldn't say we are home and dry just yet.)
"We already have Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl arriving in the lucrative Holiday season"
LOL
Are you trying to be controversial, like the last thing you wrote, or just obtuse?
@teo_o lmao that sounded straight up like it came from Nintendo PR and not someone writing an editorial
What's the bets Nintendo doesn't take full advantage of this, or even any real advantage at all . . . .
I'm still worried we don't know the extent of how much covid may have derailed game development. I'm waiting to see how Nintendo's E3 goes.
(forgive me if anyone has seen me say this a few times already. I'm just trying to keep my expectations in check. I totally would love a normal full E3 lineup from Nintendo)
I'm still most interested in what all the Microsoft ❤ Nintendo flirting is all about. Sony is DOA. Xbox I fully expect to hit a homerun. They've nailed the last several E3's (aside from 2020).
Just wan’t botw2, oot HD/remake, windwaker HD, twilight princes HD, some kind of Metroid….. and Star Fox something! And now that Nintendo and Microsoft are friends, Perfect Dark?
I’m hyped!!! Don’t let me down Nintendo! Sony and MS got nothing on you!
"With Sony And Microsoft In Next-Gen Limbo, E3 Is Nintendo's For The Taking"
Title reads backwards to me. Yeah, PS5 and XSX are sharing their games across gens - see castrated Zelda BotW - but their next gen consoles have released and are all sold out for the indefinite future. Meanwhile, we've been waiting 2 years for New Switch Pro which I was all but assured across the internet from everyone's uncle who works at Nintendo would be shown today.
And here's the funny thing. Sony and MS are charging $500 for "next gen" consoles that are getting a lot of dual ports their first year, and Nintendo is probably about to introduce a "mid-gen refresh" that will have exclusive games on it, like they did w/ several games exclusive to the New 3DS. And Nintendo fans will still be mocking Sony & MS, not realizing Nintendo is selling them a "next-gen" console as a "refresh". That's how I see it going anyway.
No doubt in my mind Sony did lied about "we believe in generations" b/c even if they didn't say that, which they did, the GT7 trailer said "PS5 Exclusive" on it. And they've been talking up the God of War sequel for awhile w/o ever once saying "also on PS4", so yeah, they lied. But they told the truth the past several years about PS4 Pro. No game plays on the PS4 Pro that did not also play on the base PS4. I suppose Cyberpunk could be an argument but that's really on CDPR, not Sony. Same for MS, no X1X exclusive games despite the power difference between X1X and X1. So they kept their word for several years, and MS has been up front about the dual releases. Meanwhile try playing Minecraft or XC on a 3DS.
So we'll see. Maybe. Some day. Eventually.
"albeit saddled with debates around pricing, Returnal being a good example."
B/c nobody has ever complained about old ports and remasters of 3DS games from Nintendo being over priced?🤷♂️
Leaving what is sure to be a big PS5 exclusive hit for Sony - Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart - releasing next week out of the article entirely seems to me to be trying a bit too hard to downplay the PS5. Maybe I missed it, but I looked for it and didn't see it bc/ it will sell well, it's 1st party, and it's exclusive.
It's not a hysterical take. From what I have seen, the lack of games on PS5 and Xbox-whatever-the-heck(I like MS fine but I HATE the way they named their new systems) is the next gen exclusives. With most games released on those systems also available on PS4 and Xbone, it really doesn't leave much reason to upgrade yet.
Sure, you have the die hard folks who always want the newest toys or the best graphics. But considering the price point for these systems, I think it's fair to say a lot of people want games on those devices that actually need those devices before they fork out that kind of money.
Another thing to consider though is that Nintendo has already dropped entries into most of their killer franchises on Switch at this point. We have Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Smash, Splatoon, Xenoblade, Mario Kart, and Animal Crossing on Switch already. Yes people are still waiting on some series, like Metroid or the pipe dreams that are F-Zero or Earthbound. And there's things like SMT5 and Bayonetta, but no matter how dedicated those fans are for those games, they aren't in the same league.
Sequels and new entries in series already on the platform are probably not gonna generate the same level of hype as the first entries on the system.
But if there is anything we can say for sure - it's that people are not going to be happy with what Nintendo is offering. No matter what.
I can't remember a time when E3 came by and people were even mostly happy. And these days, online, people are NEVER happy.
The days of new generations being genuinely exciting are long gone, now its just slightly prettier versions of games we already have and the cross gen nature of games means there's virtually no reason to jump on board straight away. These days I have too much fun with my retro consoles and Switch to really care. In fact I played my Wii for the first time in years and it was such a refreshing and joyful experience, much more so than the PS5 I got at launch, though Astro Bot was really fun.
This year I'm just looking forward to seeing what Nintendo have for us and I've seen nothing elsewhere that excites me anywhere near as much as Breath of the Wild 2
While Playstation have opted out again, they'll show something around the time and it'll be good. As a PS4 owner, I just can't see past the PS5 as something worth jumping on this year or next.
Does it really have exclusives? I'd say it has one right now, maybe four by the end of the year. I'm not including Astrobot (tech demo), destruction all stars (dying), demon souls (PS3 game)
Nintendo's lineup seems predicable as most titles are known, just waiting to see something. If anyone needs to take the spotlight here it's Microsoft they could hit Sony very hard if they do something to pull in those casual gamers.
Yeah, while the popular meme is claim "Switch haz no gamez", the Switch is actually having a solid year thus far with plenty to come, and that's not even counting the obvious new games we'll get at E3.
Speaking of the other companies... I love how Sony straight up lied to their audience just to make a jab at Microsoft. 🙄
the switch started the 9th gen 4 years ago. it has already won the war. no way Sony or Microsoft can catch up. who will be second place? personally I am hoping for Microsoft. I like the series X design and they have Bethesda. Sony has worn out their welcome. clunky hardware. over priced games that fans can get cheaper on a last gen system. they CENSOR. so many of their games. and care little about their workers. so Nintendo is the number one 9th gen console by a mile. who will be second is the big race now.
It's a good time to be a Nintendo system owner. Lots of great games, promising new games coming, and even quality third-party support, all on a system that can be played literally anywhere. The fact that we're even talking about Nintendo being in a position to take advantage of its position over Sony and Microsoft would've been laughable 5 or so years ago. No matter what Nintendo shows at E3, the gamers are the true winners.
That said, I can't wait for more info on The Sequel.
They will have to show more than a golf game and some Old ports if they want to keep playstation at bay. Let’s not forget that it’s impossible to get a playstation in many parts of the World. When that shortage is solved it will be very a competative market again. When that is said i still dont understand the reluctance from third party developers to get they’re games on Switch..
@Heavyarms55 since launch between the 2 of them there are precisely 2 games I've wanted to play, both of which were on last gen consoles anyway and the second I bought on PC. The next game I'd want to play is also on last gen, so I'm good to wait for quite some time
I am kind of regretting the fact that I bought a PS5 this early on. There is nothing to play on it atm other than PS4 games...luckily my Switch and PC make up for this lack on Sony's part
Use the time wisely. The last few Directs so much time is devoted to lame multiplayer games no one cares about or some low budget third party releases no one cares about. Give us some big first party releases, some big third party releases and some solid Indies. That's been the Switch's bread and butter.
It would be the "cherry on top" if Sony were to unveil the PS5 Slim they're currently working on during E3. That isn't a joke, we know it's coming.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2021/05/ps5_redesign_to_manufacture_in_2022_will_likely_only_alter_internals
I have a feeling this is going to be the last generation that involves hardware, with the exception of Nintendo. Microsoft already seems to be phasing out buying games via Game Pass and wants Game Pass subscribers more than they want new Xbox owners. The PS5 sells when available, but Sony is losing trust with Jim Ryan's continuous lies and bad moves. Sony, unlike Microsoft, is not flush with cash, so the PlayStation brand being successful is critical to them surviving as a business.
Is the current software really selling the system, though? The last game I put money down on was way back in January, for Cyber Shadow. Haven’t wanted to buy any of their current stuff since then. Nintendo just isn’t putting anything interesting out, lately.
@BloodNinja Monster Hunter Rise sold consoles. Bowser's Fury sold consoles.
"You won't see Digital Foundry breaking down the Miitopia port or counting pixels in New Pokémon Snap or the Famicom Detective games, but these are titles that look nice on the system and are typical Nintendo fun."
I DETEST pixel counting and how Digital Foundry is prone to focusing on that (then again, that's what their core audience wants it seems). Apart from that, I generally enjoy their analysis about the other technical aspects.
Games are about fun, not about how many more pixels one game has on one system over another.
This really is the perfect opportunity for Nintendo to come out guns blazing. Not just because of Sony and Microsoft being quiet, but because a lot of the developers responsible for that onslaught of games in 2017 should have new projects ready to show by now. 2021/2022 should have a lot of big games coming and will probably be a second wave of sorts for the Switch, much in the same way that games like Galaxy 2, DKCR, Skyward Sword, and Kirby's Return to Dreamland were for the Wii in the last few years. I'm hoping for big things this E3.
@Magician "Only alter internals" only sounds like a super minimal refresh and not a console redesign
It sounds like the biggest alteration will just be related to a slightly updated AMD chip and nothing else. I doubt it's a Slim console since those usually come closer to the midway point of a console's lifecycle
I just want that pikmin 4 announcement!
@jsty3105 For some people, seeing a fully realized world in gorgeous visual fidelity is part of the fun.
We're getting Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Destroy All Humans ports. With that the Switch, as far as I'm concerned, has peaked.
I only care about nint and xbone this year. I have game pass for my pc and laptops. Mobile gaming for the win!
Just give me Resident Evil Outrage/Revelations 3 and you can talk all you want about how rosy the outlook is for Switch.
Because then I will be personally satisfied.
@carlos82 That's exactly it. There's not much merit in upgrading to a new system when said new system has so few games that require it. And I've not heard anyone say that the cross gen supported games play poorly on the older devices. Sure they have higher res and FPS on the newer hardware, but they generally sound like they run acceptably on the older machines.
And this is the internet in 2021. Where people complain about tree textures and having to wait more than 10 seconds on loading screens. Or maybe it's only Nintendo "fans" who get that up in arms? I seriously doubt that.
Hmmm... Pikmin 4?
@kingbk perhaps for some it did, but those are two of the least interesting titles ever released, I’m thinking older software is what’s truly selling.
Software always sells systems. It sold the SNES, PS2, etc. The Switch is no different. The Switch has the best lineup of games right now, so having a strong E3 will keep the momentum going.
@BloodNinja And some care a little TOO much about visual fidelity. The arguments that tend to kick off on Digital Foundry articles are soooo petty.
It's like Nintendo can do no wrong. They are just CRUSHING it at everything from hardware to software sales. They really turned a corner after the Wii U which my god their first party games for the most part felt very incomplete.
Nintendo has another massive SLAM DUNK this E3. New Switch announcement before, during or after the show. It really doesn't matter it will catch fire instantly and people are already pining HUGE for it! It's going to be a wild and fun ride and I'm very appreciative that we are actually getting an E3!!!
I do think E3 Direct will be better than the garbage February Direct but by how much is to be seen
Nintendo's going to announce their own next gen hell this E3, as the switch pro will immediately sell out and scalpers will probably be even more on top of it since anything Nintendo is always in incredibly high demand.
@Patendo lol there will be new titles lol not a lot but there will be some lol
@BloodNinja MH Rise is Capcom's best selling MH to date...
@Menardi
Oh boy the ancient “X has no games” meme I bet you think you’re clever by not directly saying it.
@Smug43
Oh yeah they got that slam dunk coming when the 95% or so that want that mythical new hardware will meet the cruel hand of reality and realize they won’t be playing the superior versions of games Nintendo will tease them with for 1-2 years from now when the news cycle will probably be crowing about Switch 2 or whatever.
@Heavyarms55 yeah its not like it used to be when all the games were new and just for those consoles day one, whether it be a Mario 64, Sonic Adventure or Luigis Mansion that simply wasn't possible on previous consoles. Now it's more like upgrading your PC hardware to play the same games with better performance and a couple of years later games will need that better hardware. Even Switch did it but at least the hardware itself gave new experiences and allowed you to take your games with you.
But, with BotW2 seemingly delayed til next year, what are they going to announce that is actually releasing this year? Kind of have to release games if you want sales of them...
Why is everyone so sure they're going to spend a bunch of time on skyward sword? I'm sure they'll mention it, but I'd be pretty surprised if it was actually part of the treehouse, much less the direct
@Trmn8r why so skeptical that there's any games coming? There's a whole 40 min direct on 2021 switch games. Also botw2 isn't delayed, it's just still in development, there's been no timeframe as far as the public is concerned
@Darkyoshi98 I hope so
Im kinda curious what team xbox will do.
But from Nintendo i want to see a lot! Smash characters, metroid 4, some new trailer for Botw2,
New games etc. They have been quiet for too long.
@Crockin I think it's pretty safe to say BoTW2 was delayed. Pre-COVID, it was accepted by general gaming industry that it could possibly launch fall 2020 and 2021 at most. I'm skeptical because all the gaming companies are doing the same thing. Everything is delayed out a year or 2 due to the pandemic, or at least taking advantage of that as the excuse. I'm sure they'll be games announced and we will get something this fall. But I have a feeling it'll be a similar looking fall as last year for Nintendo, without any of the super big hitters. They'll probably hold them back for Switch Pro anyways.
@Crockin I was gonna say exactly that, how can a game be delayed if we've never had a release date? Nintendo seem to be going down the route of announcing games much closer to launch so I'm excited to see what they have in store
@carlos82 Yeah that's a really good point. With the Switch I've been a lot more open to ports because the vast majority of those ports have never been on a portable device before.
In my opinion, the next gen offerings from Sony and MS aren't really new products at all. They're just better versions of things we already have. Switch felt like getting something new. Going from PS4 to PS5 feels like replacing an iPhone with an newer iPhone.
Further, even looking at older Sony consoles for example, they used to add new functionality on top of better graphics and faster loading. PS2 added DVD playback (which was a HUGE deal at the time, even if it sounds laughable today). PS3 supported Blue Ray and Move while PS4 brought us VR and 4k support on PS4 Pro. PS5 added no new functionality. It's just a better PS4 Pro. And that's not a bad thing, it's just not as exciting to me. It's not a new experience, just an improved version of something we already have.
@carlos82 Delayed from their own internal plans. Lol, things can still be delayed, regardless of if they publicly announce a date and then reschedule. If I call it an "internal development delay" to make you feel better, we can call it that. Either way, same result. We get the game later than everyone expected it would be.
Whoever announces chase hq 1 and 2 will win any e3 ever! Come on anyone make it happen! Xxx
Bottom line Xbox will have a load of cgi promises and 20+ FPS games.
PlayStation will have a couple of sneaky exclusives which they have bought into and prevented a mutliformat release.
And Nintendo will have a 40 min slow painful direct with mostly games we don’t care about and one big reveal at the end for something 2+ years away.
@Trmn8r I get that but and yeah it may well be taking longer than planned just from our perspective we only basically had guess work to go on as for a release schedule
Huh? With the pro soon to be announced doesn't that make Nintendo in next gen limbo? Also...which games are we expecting this year? Just stop
Still don’t understand how quality of life improvements move systems. Have we been conditioned to except these things, due to smartphone and tablet upgrades? I’m talking about the PS5 and XSX. I was baffled by the hype. Teraflops and Ray tracing...🙄 I wanted to see a couple of titles that were must have exclusives. If a lot of E3 videos end with, “coming soon” or “coming in 2022,” “TBA,” I’m done. Everything is feeling so dry these days. 😐
@Heavyarms55 thats how I felt, I actually got the PS5 at launch and was so underwhelmed, not because it was bad in anyway, just that it didn't feel new or excite me. It didn't help that Miles Morales played exactly the same as a game I'd played 2 years earlier and I can't say it looked noticably better either. Someone offered me crazy money for it so it went and I built a PC.
I actually dug out my Wii a few days ago and that was one of the freshest gameplay experiences I've had for some time, Wii Sports Resort is just so much fun
@tntswitchfan68 Switch isn't 9th gen. It's just very, very fashionably late 8th gen going by release timeline. It only came out like not even 5 years after Wii U so it's basically attempt 2 from Nintendo to make an 8th gen system
@Krysus There's already the Series X/S, so why not the Series NX? Just like the other two Microsoft consoles, but it also has a slot for Switch carts and can play Switch games at 4k 60, to satisfy fans of Nintendo that don't feel a need for handheld and want a home only console.
I own a Switch, PS4 Pro and an Xbox One X. I haven't bought a PS5 or Series X because I literally have no reason to. Everything that interests me on those systems I can play on the consoles I currently own. Why would I shell out £500 on a PS5 when Horizon and GoW will be available on my PS4. Faster loading, better lighting and 'moss and facial hair' does not impress me. At least MS were honest about not having any truly next gen games ready. Sony lied. Mocked the competition. Then backtracked. Their first party titles are not truly next gen because they've been designed with PS4 in mind.
Not only are Sony and Microsoft in an awkward transitional stage where it honestly doesn't even feel like the new gen has truly started yet, but we know with certainty that Nintendo has a lot of heavy hitting games they're getting ready to release within the next year or so, never mind the unknown surprise or 2 you know they have up their sleeves for this Direct. The only way Nintendo doesn't run away with the show is if they knowingly choose to hold back, which is certainly something they do like to do.
Nintendo don’t even really have to do that much. They’ve a Zelda in July, two Pokemon games in the next year and BOTW2 at some point. The usual E3 with 2 or 3 announcements of imminent games will do nicely and keep momentum rolling. New hardware even more so.
Microsoft is the most interesting conference to me. Series X is a brilliant system that makes pretty much every game in my library better and frees up gaming time by being so quick at everything. Looking forward to seeing how MS plan to leverage that to build on the promising position they’ve put themselves in.
Yeah, I am not expecting much from Nintendo this E3. The cards are so in their favour, they only have to do the bare minimum... which irks me, because they have no reason to try. I am probably looking at this with the wrong attitude, but I think I preferred Nintendo when they were struggling.
In the kingdom of the blind the one eyed man is king.
There’s gotta be a Fire Emblem remake (or a new game entirely) using the game engine from Three Houses.
@ATaco And I find it totally uninteresting, did I not clarify that already?
Nintendo's momentum has been stalled ever since New Horizons launched, especially since anticipated titles like BOTW2 haven't had release dates (obviously not their fault, though the February Direct didn't help matters). This is their chance to get back on track and reveal their plan for the next year or two of Switch. (Because Mario Golf and Skyward Sword HD might be great games, but they're not system sellers.)
@ianl579 Nintendo's momentum has been stalled ever since New Horizons launched
Stalled how - that's just ludicrous by any stretch of the imagination. Love how people pull stunt rants on Switch. Now if this wasn't a NintenDoomed fandom I don't know what is.
No surprise. Nintendo has always won E3 as long as I've kept up with more modern gaming in the last seven years or so, even during the Wii U days, so them winning again shouldn't be a big surprise tbh.
Nintendo will have a great showing and probably even the best, but I think you guys might be underestimating Sony and especially Microsoft.
In most E3s over the last decade, Nintendo has went above and beyond. The current model (Nintendo Direct followed by Nintendo Treehouse) works so perfectly to capture the hype and showcase several games that we wanted to see. They always came out as the "grand finale" of E3 and will always be memorable for it.
I can't blame them for not doing much in 2020 compared to Sony and Microsoft. They were playing it safe whereas the two others have money to spend all the time. It's worth noting that Nintendo's absence in 2020 raised the expectation bar for this year's Direct, but even with the greater potential of backlash, I still welcome the high expectations.
@carlos82 It doesn't always work for Nintendo for sure. But when they release new hardware, actually new, not a refresh, they usually do try to make something functionally new. And I've always liked that about them. SNES added 4 more buttons on the controller, N64 gave us 3D games and an analogue stick. Gamecube had all those games that linked with GBA, motion controls on Wii, Gamepad on Wii U, and we talked about Switch already.
@KryptoniteKrunch I hate that compliant so much. The Switch has such a deep lineup of first party exclusives, third party titles (best support for a Nintendo console by third party developers since the Super Nintendo), the best lineup of indie games outside of Steam, and tons of retro games. There's too much to play.
Here’s a wild proposition: Nintendo is doing just fine. Sony is doing just fine. Xbox is doing just fine.
While I WOULD like a switch model powerful enough to run games in 60fps (I don't care about 4k, visually I just can't see much of a difference from 1080), I'm quite happy with nintendo's policy of Style over numbers. That said, I WANT Sony/Microsoft to give me a reason to want their new systems, and I just don't have that reason yet. The switch, by the 6 month mark, had enough games to justify a purchase.
I'll be honest, unless there is something on Metroid Prime 4, Breath of the Wild sequel, or Bayonetta 3, I am not so sure if Nintendo's presentation will excite me. I want to see new stuff, not more of what I already know is coming.
I'll still be watching in hopes that Nintendo has something that interests me up it's sleeve. But even Nintendo's output hasn't been as strong (for my interests) lately.
Right now, the only upcoming Switch game I want is No More Heroes 3.
My Xbox Series X is my multi-platform machine (I also have a PS5 for Sony exclusives).
I am not really interested in a Switch Pro model unless I can't play the sequel to Breath of the Wild or Metroid Prime 4 on a standard Switch.
All that being said, I am happy that the Switch has been a big comeback for Nintendo after the Wii U. Plenty of games have been released and support has been strong. Sadly, much of the output lately has either not been of interest to me, or I have bought on other systems.
As someone who plays Xbox, I can tell you that Microsoft has more exclusives than you think. Obviously, they have Halo, but they also have anything made by Rare after Nintendo sold it to Microsoft. And going forward, there's a chance that anything made by Mojang and Bethesda could be made into Microsoft exclusives.
But at the end of the day, both Sony and Microsoft largely can't survive without robust partnerships from third-party developers. Nintendo can, because of how many exclusives they have under their belt, and they have done so many times, such as during the Wii and the Wii U era (although the latter was a commercial failure; even I can admit that).
@tntswitchfan68 I'll bet you any money the ps5 outsells the xbox 2-1! It's not even going to be close.
All I know for sure is people will find something to be extremely unhappy about and complain.
Nintendo could announce BotW2, Mario Kart 9, Metroid Prime 4, Switch Pro and a slew of others things for 2021 and people would still find some reason to bash them.
@Trmn8r well yeah technically everything was delayed most likely, but literally the only thing anyone knows about botw2 is that it's in development and was announced 2 years ago. Pretty standard stuff here.
So the switch is last gen then.
Also this Nintendo direct best steer clear from any more lazy ports
@BloodNinja
I simply bring it up because your earlier comments were about not buying recent games because you don't personally find them interesting, like Rise. I pointed out that Rise is the best selling game because it would mean that your opinion is in the minority and that people are in fact buying them up. Regardless of how you feel about their quality.
It'll be interesting to see if they have anything compelling from a first-party perspective to show off this year. I'm SUPER excited for a few upcoming 2020 Switch titles, but they're all from third-party developers. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I'd love to see Nintendo drop some first-party nukes like they did in 2017 instead of relying on strong third-party support and Animal Crossing to carry them another year.
With that said, I'm not expecting anything too big from their internal teams, given at least three big exclusives are currently lined up to release around the end of 2020/beginning of 2021, and the Switch release line-up is fairly packed in July. That leaves August - October for a potential first-party surprise and/or potential 2022 releases like Breath of the Wild 2/Bayonetta 3/Metroid Prime Trilogy/etc.
It's absolutely Nintendo's year for the taking, however. PS5/XSX will gain momentum eventually, but there's so little exciting software on the immediate next-gen horizon. Other than the occasional exclusive, my PS4 will do me for Playstation games probably through 2022, and Microsoft's notable releases are all years off, save the next Halo, which I expect they'll flog at E3 this year. That property does nothing for me, unfortunately.
@GamingFan4Lyf Exactly my opinion lately - you summarised it pretty well, plus bad tastes left with limited time releases and amiibos being used to unlock simple game features. I'll keep my hopes low - this article, however optimistic it sounds, sounds like hollow hope.
I expect the rumored new 2D Metroid and Donkey Kong games to be reveled at this E3, alongside a new trailer for BOTW2 confirming a March 2022 release.
Those are my only real expectations. Anything beyond that would be a bonus to me.
@outsider83
QOL improvements have always been a good seller. That’s how PC Gaming works. For many being able to play existing games in better quality is a big selling point. No chance of droughts in a systems early years. It’s prevalent outside Gaming too, it’s why people upgrade Hi Fi Components and buy up scaling Blu-ray players. Getting better battery life used to be a reason to upgrade a Walkman or Mini Disc Player etc. The last games system to sell off the back of a big exclusive was the Wii by my reckoning.
@ianl579 m
I’m not sure generating momentum is a big concern for Nintendo
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/05/nintendo_reports_major_increases_in_profits_but_anticipates_a_drop_this_year
Sustaining it maybe, but they are flying at the minute.
@Serialsid Depends. If Microsoft can get big exclusives and 3rd Party Games that play better. Microsoft has a chance, but they gotta bring some games out.
Nintendo has won every single E3 in the past they will win this one as well lol
@kingbk Agreed. And Animal Crossing. And Mario Kart. And Smash Bros. And Miitopia.
@KryptoniteKrunch can’t wait to get a ten minute trailer of Mario Gold <_>
I agree and cannot wait to see if Nintendo will actually take advantage of this opportunity!
A remastered port of a ten year old game a "big" game? Meh. Sounds like Nintendo doesn't have much to offer going by that.
I know BOTW2 and Arceus are two really exciting games. Not much before that revealed right now, though.
I don’t understand why you think BOTW2 won’t be the big hollyday november release, if the rumoured switch pro release is announced next week it will release the same day as Zelda.
Watch Nintendo spend half the Direct on one game again
@Heavyarms55
You used the dual sense with a game designed to work with it?
It’s a pretty sick controller.
And honestly, as someone who despises load times, the fast loading on PS5 software has been a god send.
@rjejr
You're trying too hard bruv.
@Shadowthrone
Ha ha ha Straight up facts!
I was thinking last night, no one's talking about a potential new Fire Emblem game? It's become one of Nintendo's better selling franchises and Three Houses has been out a while. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a new game announced.
@Heavyarms55 Easily the most accurate prediction I've seen so far.
Nintendo is at its absolute worst right now, creatively speaking. When their consoles are selling well and their profit is skyrocketing, they become complacent and simply do not produce the content we expect from them. This happens every single time, without fail. This E3 will be no different. Nintendo will show the bare minimum and blame Covid like everyone else. Don't set yourself up for disappointment, people. Successful Nintendo is worst Nintendo.
Can only hope, Nintendo should blow the house down with the franchises they have. But as usual they will probably show nothing but animal crossing type games, which I have no interest in. I keep longing for Starfox, pilotwings, F-zero, Metroid, Donkey kong. I expect to be disappointed I usually am unfortunately.
Please Metroid Other M for Switch.
Not kidding!
@rjejr At least the Pro exclusives are games that can't run on the og Switch.
@Patendo Nintendo always announces new stuff at e3. This one will be no different
@Chamver Nintendo has not at all. Exams complacent. They have literally came out with good games consistently. Just because your a one genre or title person does not mean they have been complacent. Nintendo in fact has been more active than any of the other companies the last few years and even now they have literally nothing to announce while Nintendo has loads lined up.
@impurekind lol its so true.
I love reading the comments sections though, you have so many bright eyed Nintendo fans hoping for great games and praying for Nintendo to take advantage of this.
It's so funny, because these people are mostly adults who actually are generally reasonable down to earth people, but when it comes to this, it's almost like their from a different dimension.
The expectations are so unfounded because Nintendo has literally NEVER TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF ANY E3.... EVER.
Surprise announcement of Persona 5-io Kart...
Will there ever be a Persona 4 Golden or 5 Royal port coming to the Switch?
Let us ponder all of the spin offs that will come out before that will ever happen...
@SwitchForce @ianl579 for fans, there really hasn’t been much to write home about since New Horizons. Finally, a port worth buying in 3D world. Paper Mario, which we had a relatively recent entry....as far as Nintendo, yeah, it has been a dull 14 months to say the least.
Really weird article. Feels like it is to cheer people on this sit up, while Nintendo is doing just fine.
Just got my ps5 thursday. It truely is a generational leap. Playing Astro’s playground made me feel more nintendo than i have done for a while on my switch btw.
The cross generation games are a brilliant idea. The simple upgrade to nex machina (1440p , 60 fps) made almost made me cry. The psplus collectiob is also a good idea. (Upgrade ps4 classic you get for free on ps5) So sony is doing fine too.
So not sure what this article us doing my repeating things from a previous direct as somehow stealing the show. A) they don’t need too. B) they won’t since now the competition has laid a base they can talk about 2002 and further.
@tntswitchfan68 technically speaking the switch is an 8th gen console by the standards of whatevr analysts come up with this stuff... But personally, I agree that nintendo started 9th gen early and (controversial opinion warning) probably wont release a new console until we're ready to transition into gen 10.
On a a semi related note I once had a crazy idea that the "switch pro" and game pass rumors are actually so abundant because of the amount of out-of-house colaboration required to make nintendo's tenth gen console
the official console of game pass. (Lets face it, microsoft is going to be dropping console manufacturing soon)
@Dilly-Mick I know. But, release wise, it is 9th gen.
@Chamver Astral Chain, Fire Emblem, BOTW, Odyssey, XC2, etc. You are wrong.
@Razer Well, let's not get too crazy here. Nintendo has definintely taken advantage of E3s in the past, at least imo, such as when it demoed the N64 with playable Mario 64, Pilotwings, Wave Race 64 and Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire in 1996--it was utterly mind blowing for basically everyone at the time to get to play the system and the launch titles like that--or when it had Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Banjo-Kazooie and GoldenEye 007 in 1997, or when it revealed both the "Revolution" and the Game Boy Micro and talked about the Virtual Console in 2005, and stuff like that. But, yeah, in recent times it's almost entirely been rather disappointing and/or totally predictible imo.
@Nostromo8 I feel sorry for this one youtuber by the name of SwitchForce. Many people were calling out to him to apologize for the false switch pro rumors. Like it wasn't his fault. He didn't make those rumors up. He is sharing opinions and just showing news of what is going on in the world of videogames
This just shows how people always trust leaks and stuff
@anoyonmus I take it one day at a time. For people to make such calls tells you how they want to stop people's free speech. I tell them this stop reading and posting to it if you don't like it no one forced you to respond or reply. But you know how that goes. They can't accept the fact someone rumor mill or not post things - when they want Nintendo to FAIL that is the real reason NintenDoomed fandom posing as Nintendo fans. But guess they don't have a happy life outside of the forums.
@SwitchForce wait you are on here? I am sorry that you had to deal with that. You are just reporting the news. Not your fault. Don't apologize for it.
And there is a reason why articles with rumors say "take this with a grain of salt"
Endless Ocean x Evangelion... I'd buy that!!!!
@rockodoodle @electrolite77 @SwitchForce Obviously, Nintendo has been doing fantastic in a financial sense. I'm more speaking toward a feeling I've had and that I've seen from other fans about their recent lineup.
I'm looking forward to seeing some of these previews and trailers get turned into Game Builder Games by the fans. I'm sure that's why they're releasing it so close to e3.
