At the end of last month, Nintendo rolled out another batch of retro games for the SNES and NES Switch Online service. Japan also got another Fire Emblem game and a bonus for everyone was Super Mario Kart SP.
The latest lot of classic games also means there are now more than 100 games available on the Switch Online service. We've had exciting releases like the Donkey Kong Country series on the SNES and Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels on the NES.
With this in mind, Nintendo is curious to know what your favourites releases are so far, sharing the following message:
There are now over 100 classic #NES & #SuperNES games to enjoy on #NintendoSwitchOnline! What are your favourites?
What else would you like to see from this service in the future? Do you have any particular game requests for Nintendo? Leave your thoughts down below.

Donkey kong country 2. That is all.
is constantly playing games that have nothing to do with the NES and SNES games on NSO's service
...I'm sorry did you say something?
Donkey Kong Country 2, Demon's Crest and Wild Guns. For NES I really like Zelda 2
Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy II (IV)
Final Fantasy III (VI)
Dragon Warrior
Dragon Warrior II
Dragon Warrior III
Dragon Warrior IV
TMNT II: The Arcade Game
TMNT IV: Turtles In Time
Battle of Olympus
Faxanadu
Startropics, I just love that game, I always revisit it every few years. I don't understand why they haven't released Startropics 2 yet...
For me, The Legend of Zelda and A Link to the Past.
Played some of my old favourites like LttP and Super Metroid when they first dropped, but haven't even bothered opening the app since.
I would rather NSO followed the PS+ and Xbox Gold model and charged a little more but gave newer/bigger games away each month.
Mario 1, 2, 3, world, all-stars, Dkc 1, 2, 3, Zelda 1, 2, lttp, Super Metroid, Startropics, Ninja Gaiden. I can go on. Great games to play. But Donkey Kong Country 3 was the last good game. Now only obscure games that aren’t good are added to the service…
@KnightsTemplar
I'd personally add Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island and Super Mario Kart, but DKC2 wins over all those anyway
Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Metroid, Super Mario Bros. 3 are probably my three favorite.
The DK games and super mario, thats it....Damn it nintendo just bring the GC games back please I never got to play them, I would also like GBA to play the Mario & Luigi games.
Nintendo please just port the M&L games on the switch, I Begg you!
I opened super metroid and Link to the past but I can't invest time in a game I cant own and will stop working when my subscription runs out. Instead I played super metroid on my Snes mini and Link to the past on my GBA.
Super Mario RPG and all Fire Emblem (in English)
Way to deflect from the real issues with Switch Online Nintendo.
My absolute favorite is Kirby Super Star. There are some other absolute bangers as well, though.
I would love them to publish some of the NES games which are great but crazy expensive on ebay such as Little Samson and Mr Gimmick!
I'm not as familar with those types of games on the SNES but there must be some on that system too.
Plus, as @LinktotheFuture said, the teenage mutant ninja turtles games.
DKC trilogy, Super Mario Kart, A Link to the Past, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario World, Dr. Mario, Double Dragon... And not much else. Mostly games I've already played to death though...
Enjoying joe and Mac these days. 😊
I'd prefer Nintendo expanding its emulated console count to something, anything, higher than 2
Current favorites:
Hopes and dreams for future, some of which are very unlikely:
NES:
SNES:
For Japan's service:
Other:
The original three Dragon Quest, the first Flintstones for NES and it will never happen but some Star Trek games for SNES
The SNES had a Tetris & Dr Mario combo cart which included a combined mode where you raced for high score. It was Puyo Puyo Tetris before Puyo Puyo Tetris.
Super Mario Kart because I can play online for the 1st time against my brother in another country! We play first to 10 on match race, first to 10 battle mode and GP mushroom cup most evenings.
My childhood reborn in the moderm era 😁😁😁
I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to play games that I would never have purchased, let alone known about. I specially like the localised versions of the Japanese puzzle games on SNES.
Yes there are many missing classics, but this has more to do with the business model Nintendo chose. When I owned a SNES back in the day, most retailers only had small collections of video games available. It wasn’t like today. So I think it’s been good value overall.
I cant believe chrono trigger isn't mentioned more often
The ones that aint on it.
After paying for lots of retro content on the Wii and Wii U, on both of their respective Virtual consoles, then losing the content when I sold the machines I much prefer the new set up.
But at the moment I have played a lot of these games to death, and I very much doubt I would play anymore if the N64 and even Gamecube were added, these games always are remembered much better than they actually are in reality today, nostalgia is a powerful motivator for these things.
That being said I am quite partial to Super soccer and Tennis.
My favorite by far is Famicom Wars. I just wish Nintendo would get all the newer Wars games on Switch! I also love Excitebike vs, Dr Mario, Kirby's Dream Course, the Pop n Twinbee game whatever it's called, and the Japanese Tetris Attack Panel de Pon game.
My favourite is Donkey Kong Country 3 because it was the only DKC game I'd never played and it was MUCH better than I expected. I actually enjoyed it more than Tropical Freeze.
None actually. Nintendo online is still garbage.
"Nintendo is curious to know what your favourites releases are so far"
Umm.. no they're not. Did everyone's brains just switch off for a moment? 😅
It's just a PR rep on Twitter trying to maintain engagement with the Australian/NZ community. There's no official survey or interest in feedback.
It's no different to NintendoLife authors writing about a new game rumor and the last sentence says "What do you think about this rumor? Tell us in the comments below!" The author doesn't care, it's just to drum up engagement and repeat views (which is fair enough).
@HungryHungryHomer,
No deflection at all, the article asks a simple question, " What Are Your Favourite Switch Online SNES And NES Games? ".
If the article was discussing the online service as a whole, and then suggesting there were no shortcomings with the service, and glossing over or ignoring them, then you and others that do not think the service is good value would have a point, but in relation to this article your comment is moot.
Nintendo has all of our gameplay data, and already knows the answer.
Smash Tennis. I really hope this game isn't being slept on. It's a great tennis game with a really fun presentation. I'd say it's the best Tennis game on SNES (maybe the best ever). It feels like a better version of Super Tennis.
I haven't been playing it on NSO much but a few years back I picked up a Japanese cart (Super Family Tennis) and it's become my go-to multiplayer game.
Super Metroid and Link to the Past
They're probably not going to do anything with this information. They'll probably mostly keep adding sub par games to the service without improving on it or adding new consoles to the mix. It's a shame.
But whatever. I have been enjoying a bunch of games that are on offer! Mostly Mario games like World, Yoshi's Island and Super Mario Kart. But also the DKC games here and there (which, while great, I personally find a little bit overrated.. just a bit), Super Metroid, the Zelda games, and a few times some if the third party games.
Most of them! Keep 'em coming
I just want N64 games. I need me some freaking TETRISPHERE, okay Nintendo!?!? Is that too much to ask!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I've been going through withdrawals since 2004!!!!!!
The usual suspects. Mario Zelda Metroid. Seeing a lot of love for donkey Kong country 2 mite have to play more but think I prefer the first. Anyway these games need a SNES pad so gonna set up my mini and play s metroid xxxx
@Moistnado Very good satire.
The ones that aren’t on the snes classic. Which Nintendo should put more of on SNES online in my opinion .
Would love stuff such as the Japanese fire emblems, Shin Megami Tenseis, Mother 3. Stuff that hasn’t been released in the west. Or hasn’t been rereleased since the nes or snes.
Definitely Demon's Crest and the Breath of Fire games.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Those games are very underrated.
Super mario world and super mario kart. I also quite enjoyed metroid.
PLEASE Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Terranigma, Earthbound,...
Ah, sorry, only from the Switch Online service? XD
Super Mario Bros. 3 on NES and Super Metroid on SNES are my favourites.
Super Mario world, super ghouls and ghosts pilotwings ,f zero ,super Mario kart those are the games I play most regularly would love to see super pang and castlevania iv but mostly I want N64 and GameCube games pls Nintendo
Pretty pointless publicity stunt, given they already know exactly who has played which games and for how long.
They can shove it. Give us N64, Gamecube and GBA games
None of them.
The service is a joke.
Can't wait until 2031 when we finally get N64 and GameCube games.
Keep them coming Nintendo, really enjoying watching the slow drip feed.
It's like watching paint dry, so exciting.
Haven't really played it much. Inb4 people start talking about games they want added into NSO.
@ModdedInkling Duck Hunt
1. Dkc 2 (by far)
2. Yoshi's island
3. Super mario allstars
4. Super mario world
5. Dkc 1
Earthbound, Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, U. N. Squadron... it's hard to decide. There are just so many great games on this service!
I see Nintendo get so much flak over it's legacy offerings but it's incredibly cheap.
I have a family account and charge friends £5 to £10 a year for people to be on it. I GAIN money - that's better then free!
Oh boy, I think I’m going to rant... Hold the rant.... There are over a hundred games.... The vomit is coming up.... OK, I swallowed it... DKC 2 is the only one I played on switch and I’m a RPG guy. Don’t rant there is Breathe of Fire....
It's sad watching Nintendo rave about 100+ crappy old games from last century (with 5 or so gems) compared to Microsoft and Sony's online offerings.
@ThomasCasson You charge friends? And make a profit? Jesus Christ that's cold.
Terranigma - I will sign up immediately if this is added! Would also like to see Trials of Mana
In the first year, on top of the obvious titles (Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2, Super Metroid, DKC 1&2, Super Punch Out, Ninja Gaiden), I had an unnatural obsession with Wario's Woods.
That being said, I usually avoid being negative, but I can't say I disagree with the people saying that the service is disappointing. I let my subscription lapse after 12 months.
It's only $20.00 a year, yet, it's still overpriced.
Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Super Metroid, Super Mario Bros. 3.
From what I've seen in the selection of games,
NES: Kid Icarus, Kirby's Adventure, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, Legend of Zelda, Link's Adventure, Solomon's Key, and Super Mario Bros 3.
I'd love to see: The Goonies II, TMNT and Fester's Quest
SNES: Super Metroid, ALTTP, DKC, Kirby Super Star, Kirby's Dream Land 3, Super Mario World, and Demon's Crest.
I'd love to see Chrono Trigger, Unirally, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, The Magical Quest, Mystic Quest Legend, Jurassic Park.....Trying to think of others.
Even if none of these appeared on the service, I wouldn't exactly be bothered by this, as I already own many of the original game carts i've mentioned for both consoles.
@TsukiDeity wait... what? There is a startropics 2.
Startropics 2 Zodas Revenge for the NES.
Haven’t played either ... but the sequel is pretty existent
I'm not interested in NES/SNES games at all. They could remove them all and it wouldn't make a difference to me.
As long as there are no GBA games I'm online member only for the reason of being able playing online.
If you’d have told me back when NSO launched that we’d be in June 2021 and still only have NES and SNES games I’d have laughed my head off. Not even Nintendo would be that lazy, I’d have said....
I’ve spent the most hours on Super Dodgeball, Mario’s Picross, and Super Mario Kart. Not my overall favorites of those eras, but they definitely keep me hooked.
Thinking back to my childhood, the games I put the most time into would have been Super Mario Bros 1 and 3, Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2, Super Mario World, Super Probotector, Castlevania IV, Street Fighter II. And of course Link to the Past and Zelda II.
I’m sure there were others, Super Star Wars is an honourable mention for example because I loved the Death Star trench run, but I think most of those I’ve mentioned are on switch online.
Tecmo Bowl!
Touchdown!
I'd like to see the Adventure Island and Super Adventure Island games added for NES and SNES. Also for the NES they should add Tecmo World Wrestling, Bad Dudes, Rad Racer and Golf.
My faves are Panel del pon, Super Mario all stars and Vs. Excitebike.
The only game I’ve really played on either service is Rygar, and that was a blast to replay. I’ve kind of given up on anything noteworthy being newly added to these services - it’s time for a new system to get added.
@60frames-please Interesting, I have the original Famicom Wars cartridge on Famicom, and found it incredibly slow, to the point that I didn't even have fun with it. Nice to see that it actually does have its fans, it's a really good concept.
And you are the best for mentioning Kirby's Dream Course. It's genuinely an incredible and very creative game, and it's criminally underrated. It might be due to the fact that it's probably the Kirby game that's the hardest to get into for new players.
Battletoads(licensing issues aside).
How about games that actually were popular like Earthbound or N64 games or GC games?
For the NES, I’ve liked playing Pro Wrestling and Tecmo Bowl. Also played through Mario and Legend of Zelda again. I liked getting to try Star Tropics for the first time as well. On SNES, all the DKC games, Super Metroid, LoZ, and F-Zero. A lot of good ones on the service. But like a lot of others, I would like to see more games or maybe an expansion of the service to Gameboy and more.
Easily the Fire Emblem games, but I'm going outside my region to play them, rendering my opinion moot. We all know that's not what they're asking.
Super Metroid, Zelda ALttP, DLC 2 and 3
Wake me up when they add more of their first party games like Earthbound to NSO.
waiting for turtles 1-4(2 & 4 home versions) + tournament fighters(snes version), & super tecmo bowl. then if they ever happen, the gameboy family & n64 catalogs.
Thank god I kept my classic systems, so I don’t have to use this service to be able to play the games I love!
Demons Blazon!
Earthbound! (Is it even on the service yet?)
Super Metroid!
Castlevania IV!
Mario World!
As far as games a service goes, down with that sort of thing! lol
NINJA APPROVED
SMT II, LttP, fire Emblem, Ninja Gaiden II plus many games I have never played before as well. Love the fact that you get access to multiple region’s nso.
@timp29 Good list!
NINJA APPROVES NINJA
@Frank-The-Tank
It's not cold at all
it's cheaper for them to get in on my family account? It's 17.99 for a single membership. Everyone wins.
@ThomasCasson
...or you could just pay for it? I get what you're saying, but to make a profit on it?
I just pay for it outright and added friends to stay connected through online games. The "profit" is being able to play with your friends. What's $50 a year (here)? Less than a specialty coffee per month.
@fafonio That's my mistake, I didn't mean to make it sound like it didn't exist yet, I just meant it's not on NSO yet.
I have Startropics 2 on my Wii, but I'm never going to plug it in, I just love my Switch too much, I want it there. haha
Nintendo should have rolled out N64, Gameboy, gameboy advance and gamebiy colour games. Holding them back has led to people falling away from the live service and going towards roms. Quite legal in the UK if you already own the game on the original system too!
There are literally only about 10 or 15 on each that are good.
@Late Nintendo needs to read your list!
DKC3, KDL3, DKC2.
Omg it has to be earthbound... oh wait
The Sega Channel had better games and that was like 30 years ago 😄 🎮 📺
@Mr-Fuggles777 IDK even know it would be worth the price of PS+ or Xbox Live or even close until they improve the quality and add social features like Party Chat.
The Shooters, since they are pretty easy to pick up and play at Work!
Edit:
For the Major Games, i have them original, also a SD2SNES and a Mister.
As i dislike to play them with a Stick i am not playing them mobile.
DK country 2 and F-Zero
I haven't necessarily played these much on the Nintendo Switch lately, but otherwise these are still my top 13 favourites from both NES and SNES combined, with what is available right now. The list is just my own enjoyment and likes, but I think they're all great games.
1. Super Mario World (SNES)
2. Super Mario All Stars (SNES)
3. Kirby Super Star (SNES)
4. Mario Bros. (NES)
5. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
6. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
7. Kirby Adventure (NES)
8. Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES)
9. The Legend of Zelda (SNES)
10. Yoshi Island (SNES)
11. Super Mario Kart (SNES)
12. Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES) (But I've never played the first two from memory so they can't appear on my list).
13. Donkey Kong (NES)
I really enjoy all these 13 games I picked.
I recently discovered Super Soccer and that game was surprisingly fun. Other games I love are Super Metroid, Super Mario Bros 3, and Donkey Kong Country. There’s a whole lot of meh on there tho
What I want: Super Mario RPG.
Turtles in Time.
Mario Paint. I probably wouldn't play it much, but I'd love to mess around with it, and reminisce about Christmas '92 when I was little and obsessssssed with it
What I've played most: I play Super Mario Kart a lot, and I'd probably play more if anyone I knew liked it. My brother and boyfriend will play a couple rounds with me but I can tell they'd rather move on to MK8D. I've also played a good amount of All-stars on the Switch. Ive played Super Metroid to death over the years, so I'm waiting at least a couple more before I jump into it again on the NSO service.
Super Punchout. Man, I love spanking the opponents, I can give some of them (Masked Muscle, Mr. Sandman & Nick Bruiser spring to mind) an ALMIGHTY drubbing.
Time for some ROM begging. Lol. Just swap out all the SP games for stuff like Zoda’s Revenge and Mysterious Murasame Castle. And Gameboy. And pick some GOOD unknown games, like Whomp ‘Em.
@BloodNinja ninjas have to stick together
@timp29 I think you mean kick together!
Well, it’s definitely 100 plus games... I dunno if they are all classics though, apart from their age
Oh Nintendo, you have quite the nerve....
NES: Two Obvious; SMB 3, Zelda 2
Two Not so Obvious; Tennis, Eliminator Boat Duel
SNES: Two Obvious; DKC, SMW
Two Not so Obvious; Kirby Dream Course, Demon's Crest
my favorite games are lttp and punch out for nes
None.
Everything a person owns on Wii U eShop should be free for them on Switch.
@Clyde_Radcliffe
Now I find that very interesting.
I prefer the classic Donkey Kong Country games, but then I grew up with them all.
@Late
The far superior arcade port of Sunset Riders is available on the eshop.
@Late
And actually the far superior arcade version of Final Fight 1 is also available.
Earthbound! ....no wait that's not available
Mario RPG! ....no wait that's not available
Fire Emblem! ....no wait that's not available
FF1-6! ....no wait that's not available
Chrono Trigger! ....no wait that's not available
...none. I can honestly claim there is not a single game included that I care much about at all. No RPGs
Tennis, and Mario kart. Hoping we'll get Gauntlet and Goof Troop eventually!! Basically any good simultaneous multiplayer games. Joe and Mac was a fav back in the day, but my girl gets frustrated playing it co op lol.
LoZ Link to the Past and Super Mario World.
I never had a SNES so I never played those until now.
Smash Tennis doesn't support 4 players. Please fix! SNES Online disables the controllers of the third and fourth players.
None of them are truly my favourites as I played them so often before. I guess I'd say Stunt Race FX because that's a welcome new addition to these retro packs and saves me from breaking out the SNES.
Can we finally get to GameCube games digitally? 🤐
Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Sim City, and Super Mario Rpg
@Mando44646 Breath of Fire 1 & 2.
None. I'm not a fan of really old games
Because I have played many of them on older systems before, I haven't really beeen playing a lot on snes/nes online. All time fav is Super Mario World. Super Metroid & LTTP are great as well. Kirby's Adventure NES!
Look at this huge selection at games yet people can't stop complaining about it simply because it has a few classics still missing. It has already updated greatly over the years, and for just 20 bucks a year you have more NES & SNES combined than you ever had as a kid.
with super Mario World. Super Metroid .Zelda link to the past. Super Mario trilogy. star fox. f zero and donkey Kong trilogy and punch out alone make the 20 bucks a year worth these gems. they are not all shovel ware like some cry babies complains. some of the games are pretty good. like joe and Mac. if you do not like the online service don't pay for it then period.
@jimi_harr
If you don't mind playing on that grey area with the nintendo ninja lawyers!!
GB/GBC/GBA and N64 games, please.
@Krisi Yeah, Famicom Wars is the worst game in an awesome series. I've been playing it on Switch just because it's the only Wars game on the system.
Dream Course is so fun and charming. I played it while in high school and still love it today.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and I'm still waiting on it ;P.
I'm still surprised that there are no new consoles added to this service. At this point I expected that we would get at LEAST classic GB games.
I'm sure Nintendo already knows what everyone plays on NSO. For me, it's the two Breath of Fire games.
Little Samson.
@BanjoPickles True. But they're not free and don't have online multiplayer. I was thinking about listing Samurai Shodown too but it's already available with online multiplayer via Collection. It would still be a nice addition, just to raise awareness of the series. It's not like having Wild Guns Reloaded already on Switch stopped the original game from coming to the service.
For me NES Open, closely followed by F-Zero and Super Ghouls n Ghosts. Don’t care about all that preservation business, I’m in the process of getting rid of thousands of records at the mo. I like the convenience of having loads of games sitting right there on tap.
@Late
Ah, true.
Did anyone play Psycho Dream? That was a trip! As much as I love the LttP/Super Metroid/SMW trifecta, having stuff like Psycho Dream come over is actually pretty rad. Also a fan of the JP Picross/Puyo Puyo/Tetris Attack offerings, that's been a lot of fun in my house.
Zelda 2 primarily. For me this game has aged really well.
ALTTP, Super Metroid, Mario 2, 3, and World, DKC2, Zelda 1, Yoshi’s Island.
Those are the ones I play.
Don't forget the NES and SNES controllers made a nice appearance too.
My favourite games Super Mario World and All stars, Mario Kart and Pilot Wings get a mention from me too.
@Nontendo_4DS people think I'm joking, but I have almost 15hrs of gameplay time on Tennis
@Tott ?!
I find it odd how you are telling people how to live their lives!?
Everyone wins - I get it free with a little money over and they don't have to pay 17.99 a year. They are happy too? And its all official.
@ThomasCasson
I was just presenting another option (all could, no should) — just paying for it. Though I did acknowledge what you were getting at.
And my sharing that I personally wouldn't profit off my friends is simply my opinion.
No where in my comment was I telling anyone how to live their lives — sorry that's how you read it.
EDIT: sorry that's how it came across* Not pointing fault to interpretation, I could have phrased it better.
To each their own. Opinions included.
@Frank-The-Tank @Tott Im amazed you have both come down on me like a tonne of bricks for something they allow officially?
It allows 8 people on a family membership. 8 x 5 = 40..
You can give it people offcially for 5 pounds and you will profit yourself? I assumed everyone would go in it together?! Again.. all my friends love it, everyone benefits. I get 9 pound every year that goes towards a indie game.
It isn't cold and i shouldn't "just buy it" - its smart.
@ThomasCasson
Again, all could and no should. I wasn't telling you how to live your life. No bricks were coming down. None of that.
I shared an opinion on the internet without condemning anyone or saying they weren't smart. Apologies for the poor phrasing in the original comment.
Cheers.
@ThomasCasson Most people would just let friends use it for free or spread the cost equally so everyone pays the minimum. If you want to profit off your friends, go for it.
@Frank-The-Tank I literally get £9 chill your beans. I don't go into it to "profit of my friends". If one dropped out it would be less so.
For me, I like DKC, DKC 2, DKC 3, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario world, my childhood personal game Yoshi's Island, and Super Mario All-Stars from the SNES system.
For me, I like Super Mario Bros., Ice Climber, Dr. Mario, Yoshi, and Wario Woods from the NES system.
