As Abraham Lincoln once said, "boy, do I love a good video game." But since his time, how many of those video games have actually been life-changingly good? How many video games can we truly describe as "The Shawshank Redemption of shmups" or "The Shrek 2 of JRPGs"? Well, I put that answer to you, dear readers.
We all have different taste in games, but we all (hopefully) also have a Top Five of all-time, engraved into our brains alongside our favourite food (egg) and our favourite operating system (Windows 95) as markers of our personality. Mine, for reference, usually includes Fantasy Life, Ghost Trick, Dragon Age: Inquisition, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, but depending on my mood, sometimes Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney sneaks in there, too.
But Fantasy Life is a game from 2012. Ghost Trick is ten years old. Apollo Justice's court adventures came out in 2007. Paper Mario: TTYD is almost twenty, and Majora's Mask is old enough to be able to drink in the US. Dragon Age: Inquisition is the newest of those, and that was a 2014 release, which makes it older than Mad Max: Fury Road, the third Star Wars trilogy, and that jar of olives I have in the fridge.
What does this mean? Are my favourites dominated by games that have that fuzzy coating of nostalgia to make them look better? Or have we just not seen a good game in the last decade?
Obviously that's not true. I've absolutely adored quite a few games in the last few years, including 2019's Slay the Spire, last year's Disco Elysium, and the fantastic What Remains of Edith Finch from 2017. Also, because I am a terrible procrastinator, I own (but haven't got around to playing) recent releases Paradise Killer and Genesis Noir — but I'm 100% certain I'll love them, too. I have fantastic taste, thank you very much, even if the rest of the staff apparently think I only play farming games. Sob.
But none of them have cracked that top five, which, admittedly, is fairly arbitrary anyway. A lot of games from 2019 and onwards are probably in my top ten, in fact! And rest assured that the thesis of this talking point is more definitely not "games have been a bit pants since around about 2014", but evidently, none of them have grabbed a hold of my heartstrings in the way that my top five did. Especially the latest Paper Marios. The less said about them the better. Double sob.
(Relatedly, it has just occurred to me that only two of my top five are games that I had to review. Hmmm. Wonder if that's relevant.)
So, I turn to you, dear Nintendo Life audience: when was the last time a game made it into your all-time favourites?
Tell us your top five in the comments below!
Sonic Mania was 2017, along with Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey.
That was a good gaming year!
1) Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
2) Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
3) Mega Man 2
4) Fable (1 w/ Lost Chapters)
5) Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
#5 changes from time to time. could be DKC2
For me, not a fan of tactical rpgs, it was fire emblem 3H for me 😎
2017 has A LOT of games crack my top spots. I don't have a definite top 5 because it's too hard to put one over the other, I love them all equally.
That being said
I only have a definitive top 1
Undertale. A masterpiece I could hyperfixate on for hours but I'm gonna spare you the pain. That game REALLY changed me like WOW.
Last time a game smashed it's way into my top 5?
Splatoon (the original, not Splatoon 2) - the innovation and addictive gameplay, coupled with the friends and memories it has brought me have firmly established that as one of my all time favourite games.
The rest of my top five being as follows:
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Pokémon Heart Gold
Final Fantasy VII
When was the last time we had a Phoenix Write game again?
Last time for me it was Breath of the Wild, which made it to No.1!
Breath of the Wild
Ocarina of Time
Donkey Kong Country 2
In the last year and a half in fact, Witcher 3.
I had it on PC for years but i never actually got into it until i could play it portable.
It's my number 1 game of all time along with Skyrim, it's a coin toss between the two.
3rd favourite game of all time is Breath of the Wild, so that also broke my top 10 too.
1) Demons Souls (PS3 version)
2) Dark Souls Remastered
3) Dark Souls 2
4) Dark Souls 3
5) F Zero X
I know, it’s an oddball list, but nothings been able to crack it in ages.
In 2020 three games entered my top 5: Final Fantasy Tactics, Chrono Trigger and Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. They joined Pokémon HeartGold / SoulSilver (since 2010) and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (since 2002).
Fire Emblem: Awakening, which I finished recently, came close, but entered "only" in the top 10.
Probably in 2020, because that was the year that I played both Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. My favorite games, in order, are Yoshi's Island, Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto 5, Super Mario Galaxy, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
1. Fire Emblem Awakening
2. Stella Glow
3. Zelda BOTW
4. Ghost of Tsushima
5. Monster Hunter Rise or The Witcher 3
Hard to pick a top 5 and this changes constantly but The top 2 always seem to stay the same
SM3DW +BF. I never played the originals.
I also like Smash Ultimate and Child of Light (Ubisoft)
Actually I had two getting on top5 in the last 5 years
Super Mario 64
Link to the Past
Final Fantasy VII
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
I would say that Sea of Thieves was the last game to enter my top 5. As far as a Nintendo game, it might be Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. With all that being said, I’m not sure if I can really make a definitive top 5.
Disco Elysium about a year and a half ago. Final Cut only raised it in my eyes.
Very hard to do a top 5.
For right now it will be:
Zelda majora's mask
Zelda ocarina of time
Metroid Prime trilogy (if i had to choose it will be 1)
Zelda twilight princess
Persona 5 in 2017, Bloodborne before that in 2014. The other 3 all happened in the 90s.
Mine changes occasionally, but for a while it has been these: (in no particular order)
God of War (2018)
World of Warcraft (circa WotLK)
Pokemon Soul Silver
Modern Warfare 2 (though this could equally be swapped with Halo Reach, R6 Siege or Titanfall)
1. Zelda Breath of the wild
2. Zelda Twilight Princess
3. Zelda Skyward Sword
4. Mario Galaxy
5. Zelda Minish Cap
Celeste sneaked in there for me. But it tends to change depending on how I feel. But games I feel are definitely in my top are, Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Woolly World, Final Fantasy IX, Celeste, Super Mario Galaxy (2), Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario World, and usually the latest Smash Bros, so Ultimate in this case.
That's all in no specific order except for Yoshi's Island which sits pretty on number 1 and is still waiting for the perfect Yoshi game to dethrone it. Woolly World came close but was just lacking in the boss battle department to really make it that good, and it was a little too easy as well.
You probably also notice that I have only two non Nintendo games in there. It's rare for me to have non Nintendo games to really capture me, but those two definitely did.
Ngl, the last 10/10 game I've played was probably Celeste, but my top 5 is this:
1) Soul Calibur (Dreamcast)
2) Metroid Prime (GameCube)
3 ) Street Fighter Alpha 2 (ARC/SNES/PSX)
4) Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES)
5) Xenogears (PSX)
Special shout out to Killer 7, Melee, and Final Fantasy Tactics, tho!
2015 with The Witcher 3. But to be fair, Breath of the Wild, Persona 5 and Super Mario Odyssey take up Spot 6,7 and 8
I'll just second what half the comment section here is saying and agree that 2017 was a crazy year for video games. Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Breath of the Wild and Sonic Mania are all in my top 5, with Sonic Mania in particular being in my top 1. lol.
I don't know what kind of stars aligned in 2017 for the whole industry to just be non-stop pumping out massive bangers, but I look forward to whatever year in the future even comes close.
I love far too many games to actually form a top 5 but I only played Dragon Quest V this year and it's easily one of the best RPGs I've ever experienced
The most recent game to hit my top five has to be Rivals of Aether. I've always been a huge Smash fan but was never into playing competitively; Rivals strikes the perfect balance for me between accessibility and depth, and the tight, smooth gameplay tied with the fantastic presentation has me hooked.
At this point in time, my top 5 probably has to be (in no particular order):
Hmmm, truthfully, I never really think about favourites whether it be games, food, cracks in the ceiling. The only thing gamewise is that Ocarina of Time would definitely appear somewhere in that top 5 list. But beyond that, I am damned if I knew how to choose my list.
Last game to jump into my top 5 all time was XC:DE. Really blew me away.
Edit: not sure how I forgot about botw. But that's in my top 5 too!!
2. Ms. Pacman
3. Mega Man 2
5. Sonic & Knuckles
So sometime in the mid 90s? 😉 🎮
My top 5 has seen a lot of change in recent years. I don't have a de facto list, but Persona 5 (Royal), Mario Odyssey and Fire Emblem Three Houses are all strong candidates for my top five (with Final Fantasy VII Remake a runner up), and they were released in the past 5 years. I don't believe I've ever enjoyed gaming more than I do now, and I'm always discovering new titles to fall in love with.
That said, there is at least one game (Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver) which will be difficult / impossible to knock down. But we'll see...
The newest game in my top 5 is more than a decade old. But to be fair, everything about my top 5 was so perfect and so new to me that I'm not sure a game can surpass them. Like one of them is my favorite video game, one of them convinced me games could be art with its storytelling, one of them gave me multiple top tier games at once (and I don't care if a collection is cheating, it came with new games), one of them is my most replayed game (that isn't a short game anyway) and one of them is my most hours spent playing a game literally ever.
Those are largely scenarios unlikely to be recreated while also surpassing those games.
On top of that, I just don't play as many games as I used to. I try to fix that, but it doesn't always work, especially if I ever want to replay games too.
But I will say despite that, there's still a good chunk of games that are top tier stuff in modern times and there's a few more modern games that might be in my top 20 someday depending if I ever bother to think of a new top 20, a thing I did once 7+ years ago and never thought about much since. (Rayman Legends, Shovel Knight, Celeste and BOTW immediately come to mind).
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Streets of Rage 2
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Gone with my gut there. My all time top ten is pretty fluid for the top 5 spots tbh.
That would be BotW in 2017, which quickly became my #1.
As for Top 5
Twilight Princess HD
Ocarina of Time 3D
Resident Evil 4
Super Mario World
A bunch of honorable mentions and several are Switch games: Smash Ultimate, Mario Odyssey, Three Houses, Xenoblade 2, Xenoblade Definitive, Dark Souls Remastered, Skyrim etc.
Hades is probably the most recent to break into or get close to my top five (even though I don’t really know what my top five are).
I don't know if I could make a Top 5 but here I'll try my Top 3:
1: Almost anything Zelda
2: Almost anything Mario
3: Almost anything Metroid
Returnal has been the best game for a generation for me, pretty much beating anything in the last generation within the first six months of the new one.
I can't pick a true top 5 in reality because the list would change depending on certain criteria. For instance, my 5 favourite games would be different from what I think are the 5 best games ever made. Then if I was stuck on a desert island with only 5 games that would also be a different selection.
My top 5 for the sake of taking part at the moment would be:
1: Demon's Souls
2: Dark Souls
3: Super Metroid
4: Secret of Mana
5: Return... No wait, Super Mario Bros. 3
... Oh, Bloodborne, no Breath of the Wild, or Link to the Past? Mario World?
Dammit, Top 5 is impossible haha. Top 10 might be a more reasonable ask.
I started playing the Yakuza series in December and since then I've played through almost all of them (working on Like a Dragon now).
It's become one of my favourite series and I'd say Yakuza 0 is definitely in my top 5 (though I also really like Yakuza 5 and Yakuza Kiwami 2). So, very recent for me.
Also, during lockdown, played through the recent Goemon translations that came out last year. Those were all amazing. I'd say the third one is my favourite - it's very Zelda like with nice mini-metroidvania dungeons.
Yeah, I find it difficult to pin down a personal top five. The most recent game I can think of that deserves a top spot is definitely BotW.
Some other games that come close in recent memory,
Hyper Light Drifter
The last time it happen for me was with Botw
1. Mario Galaxy
2. Legend of zelda MM
3. Mario odyssey
Actually last month with judgmunt and last august with monkey island 2.
My top 5 Used to be persona 4 golden, castlevania symphony of the night, shovel knight treasure trove, minecraft and marvel vs capcom 2.
Currently it is.
1. Persona 4 golden
2. Castlevania symphony of the night
3. Shovel knight treasure trove
4. Monkey island 2: special edition
Also I moniter all games I’ve beaten since 2017 closely.
Here’s my entire (at the moment) top 93. Only the bottem 3 are games I didn’t know enjoy.
EDIT: link keeps being deleted.
EDIT: got it to work
Just here to say i enjoyed reading this one xd
That and botw ofc
The last time, in 2017 with Breath of the Wild, directly to the number one. So the list would be now like this:
1) Zelda BotW
2) Final Fantasy VII (my all time favourite... until BotW came up)
3) Resident Evil 4
4) Metroid Prime
5) Zelda A Link to the Past
PS: You all make a mistake giving Origami King a pass. I say it being a HUGE fan of Thousand Year Door (it´s in the top ten). OK is now the second best game in the series, imo.
Top ten would be much easier for me to nail down, but I'll try.
Silent Hill was 1999.
Super Mario Galaxy was 2007.
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse in 2016 nearly counts.
Breath of the Wild and Cuphead in 2017 definitely count.
Top5 is too difficult so I don't care, here goes the top 10
Great article. So hard this . Link to the past is a deffo top 5 but I first played it in 2016! Xxx that’s my most recent. Otherwise I guess it’s Mario 64, Mario world, yoshi island streets of rage 2, I could go on xxx on a side note I have played and completed the messenger in the last 2 days, what a game! Rite now that’s my top one xxx
Damn forgot resi 4 ! Xxx
Sonic 3 without knuckles- better music.
Shining force 2
Probably Yakuza 0 and Persona 5 both from 2017 for me.
I do not have a real top five.
I played and like too many games to make that call.
Mario Kart 8/Crash Team Racing
I can't slim it down anymore than that.
Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition I think.
I'd probably say this is my top five, but in no particular order:
Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
Mass Effect 2
1) Into the Breach
3) Ignition (PC top-down racing game)
5) Tetris DS
Of course there are better game, but these 5 left a great impact on me and I dont see that list changing anytime soon.
1. Mega Man X
2. Donkey Kong Country 2
3. Super Mario 64
4. Pokémon Yellow
5. F-Zero GX
Now there are definitely games in the last decade that stand out as absolute gems and I consider incredible games. Sonic Mania, Super Mario Odyssey, Halo 4 (yes, really), Celeste, and Shovel Knight to name a few. Just none that crack my top five. Sonic Mania is the closest a game has come though… what a game.
In January, when Ori of the Will of the Wisps slipped into third, behind both Mario Galaxy games.
It had been a very long time.for me, but then Breath of the Wild came out.
5. Final Fantasy 7
4. Sonic the Hedgehog
3. Mirrors Edge
2. Breath of the Wild
1. A Link to the Past
I mean, I’m sure it makes me sound like one of those “always love the newest thing” kind of guys (I really don’t think I am), but speaking as a guy who has been a huge gamer since the NES, I think that Three Houses, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Stardew Valley and Shovel Knight are all contenders for a spot on my top 5 list. Hard to say what officially makes the top 5...all I know for sure is Metroid Prime is #1 and a Phoenix Wright game is somewhere in there.
Arguably Yakuza 0 did that when I played it last October. It made me laugh constantly, teared me up, threw fun/weird activities at me at a break-neck pace and made me feel like a child in awe of a marvelous toy for 150+ hours.
That said, I've never thought too much about what my "Top 5" for games is. I once put Tales of Symphonia in first place and kind of called it a day.
Funny enough it was actually last week when I finished Nier Automata lmao.
It's really hard for me to determine what my top 5 favorite games are. I think mine (in no particular order) would be:
Y'know...this list really doesn't feel right but I'm gonna go with it for now lol.
Mine was last year that a new game made the cut. Very rare. Top 5:
1. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
2. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
3. Megaman X
4. Hades (this is the newb)
I don't really have a top 5 it's mostly a top 4. I'm overly critical of games and my top slots are only for stuff I would replay indefinitely due to quality. But I could give five to
5. Zeus Master of Olympus
There's too many games I really really love for me to make a meaningful top five. Some things just cannot be compared fairly.
I think the most recent game to make it into my "absolute favourites of all time" list is probably Celeste. It's just so... phenomenally well-designed.
I like to claim that my favourite gaming series is Castlevania, yet... I don't actually think any individual CV game is top 5 material. which is weird when you think about it. What does it actually mean to be a favourite?
I think If I were to absolutely forced to pick five games that I would describe as absolute favourites......... it's hard. but my list might look something like
it's too difficult. I don't even think EarthBound is the best-designed RPG I've ever played, yet here it is on this list anyways.
In no particular order:
Breath of the Wild
Brain Age: Concentration Training
Super Mario Bros 3
Bonus: Tropical Freeze
Man. Of all time?
1) Guardian Heroes (Sega Saturn, 1996)
2) Valkyrie Profile (PSX, 1999)
3) Shining Force 2 (Sega Genesis, 1993)
4) Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (PSX, 2000)
5) Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal (GBC, 1999)
So it’s been a while.
Give Earthbound Beginnings a go.
1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time
2. The Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask
3. Pokemon Sapphire
4. Banjo Kazooie
5. Super Mario Sunshine
Last 20 years since one has cracked the top 5 for me...
Ok, this is a hard one, but they are in no particular order:
Mario Golf Toadstool Tour
Mario Kart 8
Breath of The Wild
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom!
I think breath of the wild cracked a lot of peoples top five
-on my top five: breath fo the wild, star fox 64, banjo kazooie, super Mario 64, and paper Mario thousand year door
1. Xenoblade X (The other two would also be deserving of this spot, but I stick to one game per series as a rule)
2. Final Fantasy VI
3. Dragon Quest XI S
4. Breath of the Wild
5. Kingdom Hearts (PS2) or Pokemon Crystal, it tends to go back and forth
So the last game to break into my top 5 was DQXI back in 2018 (I played it on Steam before it came to Switch, but I have the Switch version as well and prefer it). BOTW was also in the last 5 years, and Xenoblade X just barely falls out of that 5-year window. My top 10 would probably add more classics to the overall list though (In no particular order, I'd probably add The World Ends With You, Black Mesa, Chrono Trigger, and Splatoon 2... so an even split between classic and modern. Of course, I'd feel bad leaving out Super Mario Galaxy, Ghost of Tsushima, and Shovel Knight... I have a lot of games I really love.)
SUPER MARIO 64. My top 5 are: EARTHWORM JIM: SPECIAL EDITION, SUPER MARIO 64, MS. PAC-MAN, TETRIS, and CONTRA. The last two games that almost cracked it were SNATCHER and RESIDENT EVIL 4.
Bravely Default 2 was a bloody masterpiece.
5. Fire Emblem: Awakening
3. Bravely Default 2
2. Megaman Battle Network 5 (4 and 6 can take this slot based on mood lol)
1. Pokémon Black and White
No particular order.
1. Persona 5 Royal
2. Persona 4 Golden
3. The first 3 Ace Attorney games
4. Ghost of Tsushima
5. Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
Horizon Zero Dawn was the most recent addition, jumping up to #2!
Age of Calamity surprisingly cracked my top 5. It clicked into me so well to the point where I was eager to be a completionist.
With so many genres of games to consider and how my taste for a certain game can change day by day it’s tough to pick a top 5 for me. I will say tho that Overwatch and the Witcher 3 are two very memorable games for me. I’d put them right up there with my Zelda and Mario classics.
In no order.... Rayman Legends, Mario Kart 8, Smash 4, Mario Golf 3ds, Zen Pinball FX
It's really hard to have a distinct top 5, but Xenoblade Chronicles 2 would be among them for sure.
All I know is my number 1 will forever be Resident Evil 4.
Recent potential top fivers are Breath of the Wild, Last of Us, God of War and Hollow Knight.
I'm not sure what is in my top 5, but I know Blazing Beaks is in it.
@dw4smash good call on trilogy that’s a safe pick as you get 2 really good games tho 2 I did not care for.
I have no idea what my top 5 games are but the last few games that REALLY impressed me would have been
God of War
Breath of the Wild
Ori Will of the Wisps
Rhythm Heaven Megamix
I got hotline Miami maybe two months ago, and I love it.
Jak & Daxter
Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii disc on Wii U)
After that is a big group of JRPG - Grandia 2 and Skies of Acadia on Dreamcast leading the way, also Rogue Galaxy and DQ8 on PS2 - probably Super Mario Galaxy and Breath of the Wild.
There may be others in the top 10 I've forgotten but I feel pretty good about the top 5.
For more recently, Hollow Knight (+ God of War almost) might've cracked my Top 10, Octopath Traveler maybe my Top 20... IDK about Top 5, that's hard. Off-Top atm...
My Top 5:
1. Final Fantasy X
2. Super Mario RPG
3. Final Fantasy VI
4. Zelda BOTW
... Ask me again and it might change a bit 🤷🏾♂️
My Top 6-10:
6. Metroid Prime
8. Chrono Trigger
9. Zelda: A Link to the Past
10. Hollow Knight
... Ask me again and I might have amnesia 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
Sidenote: I have yet to play (and still plan on playing) Xenoblade, which I've been told by those that know me will crack my Top 10 🤞🏾
My top 4 are consistent:
1. LoZ Majora’s Mask
2. Panzer Dragoon Saga
3. Metroid Prime 2
5-10 are less set in order and toggle between these:
For me...it was Doom Eternal. I have a very complicated relationship with that game. At first I was like "This is AWESOME." Then as I approached the end of the game I was getting fatigued with just the sheer number of demons that was getting thrown at me, with the real kicker being the tedious final boss. I started to realize I liked Doom 2016 much better. I didn't play it much more for almost a year until the Ancient Gods expansions came out (I was burnt out). Sometime in there I started getting really good at it, and now it's one of my favorite games bar none. I even want to build a gaming PC specifically to play that game.
Now I don't know if I can accurately give my top ten. I've played so many games I've loved, and I feel like an honest top ten would mostly be Metroid games. But I'm gonna try.
Screw it. Too difficult. Here's my top 20. I'm sure most of this order is inaccurate, though because with the exception of #1 you can really put it in any order you want, and I'd be happy.
19. Axiom Verge
18. Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience
17. Splinter Cell Blacklist
16. Ghost Recon Future Soldier
15. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
14. Super Mario Galaxy
13. Doom 2016
12. Doom Eternal (yeah, it's not in my top 5, but this is way too difficult)
11. Hollow Knight
10. Super Mario 3D Land
9. Metroid Zero Mission
7. Metroid Samus Returns
6. Metroid Fusion
5. Metroid Prime 2
4. Metroid Prime
3. Hyper Light Drifter
2. Super Mario Galaxy 2
1. Super Metroid.
I think you can see what I meant about it mostly being Metroid.
@PBandSmelly @Decapre 2017 was a freaking legendary year for gaming.
I don't know what order I'd put them in, but 2018's God of War is the most recent game to make it onto my list. One of the best games of all time, regardless of format. Didn't click with me immediately, but glad I stuck with it.
Outer Wilds. Nuff said 😛
No but seriously, just in the last year and a half DOOM Eternal, NieR Automata and OW skyrocketed to my top 5.
Celeste annihilated by top 10.
This is really hard because I have a fluid top 5, top 10. Only thing that is definite is my top 2: Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike and Deus Ex.
Hyper Light Drifter is the game that comes to mind for a recent game that might crack my all timers. Cosmic Star Heroine is up there too.
Samus Returns is so freakin good. I played it on and off for a while, but I finally gave it it's due this week. Man is it fun, I hope this team is working on their own Metroid game
I feel like games are generally getting better, so it's normal for a new game to break into my top 10. Off the top of my head, I'd consider the following recent games to be on my top 10:
Dark Souls 3
Horizon Zero Dawn
For context, I've been gaming since the Atari 2600. Less recent games that would make my list are DKC2, Starfox 64, Majora's Mask, Metroid Prime 2 Echoes.
Breath of the Wild for sure. But Ori and the Blind Forest as well. I don’t know why that game snagged me as much as it did when I first played it on Steam so long ago. Along with those two, I’ll always love Super Metroid, Chronotrigger, A Link to the Past, and Earthbound. I know that’s 6, but it shows the vast amount of time between my top tier list and just how recently that list has been broken. The caliber of those two games were just so high that they snuck their way in.
@RudeAnimat0r @OldManHermit Hyper Light Drifter 👍👍👍
@Classic603 @don-wario Samus Returns has the most fun combat in all of 2D Metroid in my opinion. The 360 degree aiming is perfect. I only hope if there's one on Switch at some point that they implement 360 aiming while on the move since we have two dedicated control sticks now.
Hah, you want to talk a list being dominated by nostalgia? None of my favorite five came out this millennium!
5. Ocarina of Time
4. Super Mario Bros
3. The Legend of Zelda
2. Final Fantasy III/VI
1. Super Metroid
So...1998? The latest game to crack my top ten though is Breath of the Wild.
Interesting... I have two 'new' games in the top 5, but this is after a seriously long drought of adding any.... and they both take the top spots. Breath of the Wild is number 1, but Ori and the Blind Forest is number 2 (and Slay the Spire probably comes in at 6 or 7). The rest of the top 5 is Diablo 2, Warcraft 2, and Mario 64.
This list is right off the top of my head and reflects a combination of total hours played, the level of enjoyment I got out of each, and/or the sense that I had never played anything quite like it before. It's probably slanted toward games I'm currently playing or have especially strong memories of. But I'm sure that if I had long enough I could come up with plenty of others worthy of making this list.
1) Civilization VI (PC)
2) Shining Force III (Saturn)
3) Daisenryaku VII: Modern Military Tactics Exceed (PS2, XBox)
4) Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
5) Valkyria Chronicles (PS3)
6) Skies of Arcadia (Dreamcast, GameCube)
7) Timesplitters (PS2)
8) Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U)
9) Civilization V (PC)
10) Mario Kart 8 (Wii U, Switch)
11) Halo: Combat Evolved (XBox)
12) Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (Wii)

14) Daisenryaku Perfect 3.0 (Japanese PC)
15) LUNAR: The Silver Star (Sega CD, PSX)
16) Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX, PSP)

26) Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn)
27) Iron Storm (Saturn)
28) ThunderForce III (Genesis)
29) Sam and Max Hit the Road (PC)
30) Pitfall II: Lost Caverns (Atari 2600)
@ok1 personal preference - splatoon 2 may objectively be a better game from a technical standpoint but will never have the same impact as the first game did on me
Wow... after 100 comments I doubt mine will get recognised... except hah! I love the Windows 95 OS too and everyone looks at me funny. Good times!
My top 5 is probably, in as close to an order I can get:
5: Faxanadu (almost certainly the nostalgia)
4: LoZ Ocarina of Time (never played it until I got it on Virtual Console which is probably why it's just a 4)
2: Horizon Zero Dawn
1: Final Fantasy 7 (a bit of nostalgia, it really is one of those games you had to play when it first came out, but I still feel the overall experience makes it my most favourite of all time).
That said, I should also mention games that came close like Morrowind, MK Double Dash, Smash Bros Melee, Pikmin 2 and LoZ Adventures of Link.
I don't think I have a defined top 5, and considering my simple tastes, I think they would be (in no particular order)
Kirby Super Star
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
Super Mario World
Runner-ups: Super Mario 3D World, Miitopia, Sonic 3 (standalone), Sonic Advance, Pokémon HeartGold, Banjo-Tooie.
@AtlanteanMan Switch Civ VI and Civ V’s places on that list and it would be perfect 😂
Splatoon and Into the Breach both make my top 5 from the last few years. My top 5 of all time:
1. Heroes of Might and Magic 3
2. Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past
3. Super Mario World
4. Splatoon 1/2
5. Into the Breach
Portal 1/2, Stealth Inc 2, Super Mario Maker, Advance Wars (all of them), Tetris Attack, Wargroove, Steredenn, Heroes of Might and Magic 2, Super Monkey Ball 1/2, Halo (all of them), Rainbow Six Vegas, Gears of War (original only), and Metroid Fusion are all also amazing and are right there. So many great games, so little time!
I have a solid top 3:
1. The Legend of the Mystical Ninja
2. Dead or Alive 4
3. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Right now, I think my 4 and 5 are:
4. Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
5. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
But Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is super super close to the top 5.
My current list, which is always changing, would be:
5) Metroid Prime
4) Yoshi's Island
3) Paper Mario TTYD
2) Zelda: Wind Waker
1) Donkey Kong Country 2
In alphabetical order:
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
God of War (2018)
Paper Mario: TTYD
Pokemon Omega Ruby
Super Mario World
Tomb Raider (2013)
As much as I tried to make a top 5, I can't take even one of those off the list.
Alien Isolation is easily in my top 5 and I first played it on Switch. So the last time a game entered my top 5 was just about a year and a half ago.
I'd put in there with Super Metroid, Majora's Mask, Chrono Trigger and Banjo-Kazooie, rounding my top 5. (the original version of Resident Evil 2 would have been in there if Alien Isolation didn't top it as my favourite horror game).
2: AC Odyssey
3: Tekken 3
4: Metal Gear Solid
5: Rocket League
Started playing Red Dead 2 recently and that is looking like it might take 2nd place.
My Top 5 is:
1. Super Mario Galaxy (2007)
2. Super Smash Bros Ultimate (2018)
3. Twilight Princess (Got the HD version so 2016)
4. Kirby's Return To Dreamland (2011)
5. PMD: Explorers Of Sky (First played in 2017)
I definitely first played three of this games in the last five years, but none in the last year.
I can't even begin to think up a proper Top 5. That's just way too deep of a question for me, and there's alot of wrinkles to be had too. Like, Pokémon Emerald is pretty high up there, but...there are so many Rom Hacks based on it that are far superior to the vanilla version since then. Like, even a basic 'Full Dex In-Game' hack is technically superior to the vanilla game. PokeMMO is my favorite MMO I've ever played, and it uses Emerald as part of it's setup. I can't even begin to make a Top 5 personally due to stuff like that.
Like, even a more specific game, like Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky...there didn't use to be ANY hacks of that game to interfere with that game's potential placement, but there is now, and they have solved a couple minor grievances I had with the vanilla version.
Because hacks exist, I don't think I'll ever specifically be able to ever make a concrete list, unless I'm literally on my death bed, and only counting games I've personally played through and beat. Otherwise I wouldn't feel I've done a certain game, or hack maker, due justice.
Maybe within the last year
1. Metroid Prime Hunters
2. Xenoblade Chronicles (version doesn't really matter)
4. Ring Fit Adventure
5. Animal Crossing Wild World
I'm not completely sure about Ring Fit, since I'm still playing through that game, but I do know I'm enjoying the game to a degree where I would definitely consider it somewhere among my favorite games. The Switch technically has three of my Top 5 for today, since last year it got the best overall version of Xenoblade. Besides Metroid Prime Hunters and maybe Xenoblade, this list can change depending on how I'm feeling and what I'm playing.
1. Pokémon Soul Silver
2. Xenoblade Chronicles X
3. Fire Emblem Awakening
4. Dead by Daylight
1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2. The Witcher III: Wild Hunt
3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4. Super Mario Bros. 3
This is such a fun article
1. Blaster Master
2. Dark Souls 3
3. Star Fox 64
4. Metal Gear Solid
5. Stella Glow
6. Sonic 3 & Knuckles
7. Castlevania 64/Legacy of Darkness
1) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2) Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition and Xenoblade Chronicles 2
3) Super Mario Odyssey
4) Pokémon Sword/Armor/Crown
5) Super Smash Bros Ultimate
1. Fantasy Life
2. Pokémon Heartgold & Soulsilver
3. Mario Super Sluggers
5. A tie between Animal crossing city folk, new leaf, and new horizons for different reasons
1) Grim Fandango
3) Secret of Monkey Island
4) Jet Set Radio Future
5) Kuru Kuru Kururin
And Street Fighter 2 would get a special spot for being the game that I always make sure to have around and easy to access since the 90s.
My rankings move around quite a bit, but right now:
1. Wind Waker
2. Knights of the Old Republic
3. Mario Galaxy
4. Luigi’s Mansion
5. Breath of the Wild
6. Pikmin / Paper Mario 64 / TTYD…….
Just to name a few
Luigi’s Mansion 3 is another more recent title, it comes close to cracking the top 10 but not quite there. Definitely a top 3 switch game for me though.
Love to see Prime and Double Dash on lists
My ever changing Top 5
Most of these games I’ve had fond memories and moments & they contribute to my undying love for Nintendo.
My favorite new game would probably be Bravely Default 2. I had a blast with it, even though I got stuck and took a break lol
@KateGray never seen anyone else that liked fantasy life as much as I did. I’m glad someone else appreciates that masterpiece.
Sekiro forever changed the way I approached videogames, and it's probably my #1 now.
@stckfigure Warcraft 2 oh boy ... the feels. I actually played it as a browser version a few month ago again. Was unplayable like this though. But ... the feels ...
I think right now I’d go with:
Super Mario World (This one is set in stone in the top 5 by nostalgia)
(one of the Zelda Games I’ve played. It’s hard to choose. Maybe Ocarina since it is the first one I played through in 2018 and there is a bit of nostalgia since I played it a bit - just the first dungeon - when I was 13 or 14 when it came out.)
@nessisonett I love Civ V, too, believe me. Civ VI definitely has its weak points, including the Leader (oft-repeating, as CivFanatics has noted) animations, which are caricatures in front of black, static, depressing backdrops. The map was also far more visually realistic and appealing in Civ V, and its white clouds made it much easier to distinguish explored territory from where your units actually are than Civ VI's nice-looking but too similarly-colored brown map.
So what put Civ VI over the top for me personally? The Districts, which give each city a sense of individuality and make micromanaging them much easier at a glance. And one thing I forgot to mention is Civ VI's ports to consoles, including the PS3 and Switch. Being able to play Civ on my big screen with friends and family is a HUGE bonus; the only thing I miss from the PC version is obviously the mods.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (only game ever to make me cry, so it has to be at the top for me)
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Mario Kart DS
I like the very personal lists people are putting together rather than just like the top games of recent history.
PC: Ultima Online
1. Alien vs. Predator - Atari Jaguar -
2. Phantasy Star IV - Sega Genesis -
3. Iron Storm - Sega Saturn -
4. Earthbound - Super Nintendo -
5. Splatoon 1 - WiiU -
This is heavily weighted on personal experience and though I have played games I have enjoyed tremendously since, they were not more impactful than the ones on this list if that makes sense.
@Matl If you like games that provoke strong emotional reactions, I can't recommend Valkyria Chronicles (and Valkyria Chronicles 4) enough. I'll just leave it at that so as to avoid spoilers.
@AtlanteanMan Phantasy Star IV and Iron Storm! There are dozens of us!
Tales of Symphonia
Legend Of Zelda Links' Awakening
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Diablo 3 for Switch
The only "recent" ones were XCX and D3. Exploration in XCX was so much fun and all the customization options from cosmetics to combat to mechs was perfect for me. My friend got me into D3 when it came out on the switch and I immediately sank 150+ hours into it. Otherwise, nothing has come close. Certain games hit high notes like BotW or the latest God of War but didn't completely pull me in like the others. And silly enough, Spider-Man 3 for the Wii is in the top ten cause the motion controls for web slinging were stupid fun.
Death Stranding is probably my favorite game I’ve ever played, so that’s the most recent one, truthfully. It’s hard to pare things down to a simple top five though. I mean, Megaman is my favorite series, but which one is my absolute favorite? It’s hard to say. I have a hard time doing a top 5 for a generation, let alone of all time.
1. Death Stranding
2. Essentially pick any Megaman game before X5
3. Metal Gear Solid... any of them, but honestly 2 probably is best
4. Maniac Mansion
5. Final Fantasy... one of them?
Jeez, it’s hard to consolidate. Feels weird not saying Alan Wake or Fallout or BotW or something Mario or Red Dead 2 or...seriously I could make a top 100 and worry I neglected a title. I’ve played so many games...
BotW was the last one to crack my top 5. It was everything I wanted in a Zelda game except for fishing. Top 5:
1 - Radiant Dawn
2 - Final Fantasy
3 - BotW
4 - Time Splitters 2
5 - MVP 05
In no particular order
@AtlanteanMan I’ve warmed to the districts in the last few months but I really bounced off Civ VI when it first released. My main issue is the agendas making every game against each leader feel the same. It’s a great game but I personally prefer 5.
Before looking at anyone else's. My top 5 in alphabetical order would be.
Resident Evil 4, Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: rebel strike, The chaos engine, The settlers 2 and finally WCW/nWo Revenge.
Going by that list resident evil 4 was the last game to make my top 5 in 2005.
Only a single game from a series and in no order.
BOTW broke my top 5 easily. It gave me that raw magic feeling playing it I had never gotten from a game since I was a child.
While a lot of older games have shaped my life and tastes in games, many of my "favorites" are more recent games.
1) Rocket League - combining the sport I played the most and my favorite past time into what is my favorite game of all time.
2) Smash Bros. Ultimate - I'm not even that into the Smash scene, but the game contains just so many things I like, it's always a good time, and I love the customization options.
3) Borderlands the Legendary Collection - I love the gameplay, the atmosphere, and the exploration in these games. The headhunter packs and Tiny Tina DLC in number 2 are so fun to revisit every year.
4) Breath of the Wild - While it goes against the Zelda formula established in Link to the Past, this is my favorite fantasy world to explore. There aren't many artificial barriers that limit your ability to go anywhere or try anything any time you want and that is so refreshing to me.
5) Mario Odyssey - Super Mario 64 was an eye opener for me as a kid. The ability to go anywhere and do anything blew my 10 year old mind. While I loved our Atari and other Nintendo systems, nothing could compare to that feeling for me. Mario Odyssey dials up that freedom and wonder to a 10 for me. While I'm a sucker for fantasy worlds like Hyrule, 3D Mario games have always been more "fun" for me and this may be the most fun I've had exploring a virtual world. Browser's Fury was pretty awesome for me as well and the best gaming weekend I've had since I was a kid.
Honorable mentions - Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, JackBox Party Pack 3
1. Pokemon was the first series I ever got fully into from age 8, and for years Pokemon Silver has sat on the top of the pile. So in respect of the warmness it instills in me still to this day, along with the memories, it stays put.
2. Metroid Prime stressed me out unlike any other, but the overriding theme in that game (and others in the series I suppose) brought immersion to a whole new level for me. And it also taught me that it's fine to put something down if I'm struggling with it. After a break from it, I came back fresh and finally beating the game changed my outlook on gaming as a whole and for the better.
3. From here on in the list will alter in order and definitely mixes with the honorable mentions, but as it's fresh in the memory I'm going to go with Octopath Traveler. Such an engaging cast, unique visuals and a score to rival any game.
4. Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia. Again, the cast and music is top notch, and despite no Japanese option (I couldn't find it anyway), the voice acting isn't cringey! I'm yet to really play Three Houses properly so it might take its place over time.
5. TLOZ - Breath of the Wild is probably the finest video game playground I've experienced and also the first Zelda I finished. I don't care much for the story but it's the first open-world game that I sunk all my free time into at one point. I revisit this destitute Hyrule every couple of months so it's still sucking me in 4 years later.
South Park: Stick of Truth
The Simpsons Hit and Run
LOTR - Return of the King
Super Monkey Ball
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Ori and the Blind Forest
In my case, the latest was BoTW and prior to that, Terraria.
1) King´s Field
4) DQ IX
5) Civilization II
@Classic603 Nice to see another DKC2 lover.
Nothing's gotten into my top 5 in years
1. NBA 2k Dreamcast
2. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
3. WWF No Mercy N64
4. Resident Evil Gamecube
5. Resident Evil 4 Wii
There are many other great games up on my list, but these I would play everyday, all the time if I could.
If I had answered 4 years ago: Legend of Zelda; Turtles in Time; Chrono Trigger; SF III: 3rd Strike; Persona 3
Breath of the Wild however, captivated me in a way that no game had done in something like a decade, so it might very well displace one of these.
1. Odinsphere: Leifthrasir
2. Persona 5: The Royal
3. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
5. Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology.
I have too many favorite games to give a definitive list in order. My all-time favorite game is Super Mario 64 (N64 version).
My recent favorites are Super Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, and Dragon Quest XI.
My all-time favorites after Mario 64 include Super Mario Sunshine, Earthbound, Mother 3, Paper Mario TTYD, MGS Sons of Liberty, MGS Twin Snakes, Super Monkey Ball, Super Mario NES trilogy, LoZ Twilight Princess, LoZ Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VI and VII, Chrono Trigger, Super Castlevania IV, Dragon Quest IV, V and VIII and Donkey Kong Country.
I'm positive I missed a bunch. There are just too many timeless classics to only pick five.
I didn't think that Ocarina of Time could ever be topped by anything in my book, but then I started digging deep into the PlayStation library. I played The Last of Us, The Last of Us: Part 2, and Ghost of Tsushima last year. I still love Ocarina of Time so much... but those games didn't just crack my top 5, they shattered it.
How'd you feel about the Link's Awakening remake?
@EdwardElric It is sooooo good to see Ni No Kuni get some love on someone's list. I played it for the first time last year and it was pure magic.
Metroid Prime in 2002. So almost 20 years ago.
My top 5:
Metroid Prime (GC)
Perfect Dark (N64)
Gran Turismo 2 (PS)
F-Zero X (N64)
International Superstar Soccer Deluxe (SNES)
Special mention to Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader (GC)
I factored obsession and time played into my top 5, which bumped out Rogue Leader from fifth. It was just so awesome at the time, being the first Star Wars game to really feel like being in a Star Wars movie, and one of the few games I would attain higher medals by replaying missions with strict goals.
If Metroid Prime is your #1, how do you feel for Prime 2 and 3? Or the rest of the series?
Hm. The top five is an odd mix. Silent Hill 2 night not be a fantastic gameplay experience but the feel of it and its draining emotional impact have stayed with me ever since I first played it. The Legend of Zelda, on the other hand, is strictly gameplay. Symphony of the Night is another one like the original Zelda that I can (and have) played repeatedly literally looping directly from the end credits to a new game for days. Final Fantasy X still moves me, despite having played it dozens of times, and I love the combat.
I’d have to leave the last space open. Five is too few. Hades is a national treasure and is definitely the most recent superstar 10/10 game, Red Dead Redemption 2 is fantastic. I’m replaying Mass Effect right now. I’ll always love Resident Evil 1-3. Final Fantasy 7. Yadda yadda
@Classic603 2 is a great game, but it doesn’t really have the same “magical” feeling for me. Some of that is probably the fact that it wasn’t the first, but it’s other stuff too. I prefer the original’s pacing, environments, difficulty level, soundtrack...pretty much everything. Still, really solid game and a great follow-up. I’m probably due to replay it, actually.
Not sure what it is about 3, but I cannot get into that game. I’ve started it/given up twice. It just isn’t fun for me for some reason.
The last game to enter my top 5 was Dragon Quest XI S: DE.
At this point, I don't even know if i have a top 5. I play so many and end up falling in love with almost each one so much that i start to think it's the best game ever. Until the next best game ever comes along which for me is currently Nier Replicant
I'll always remember the gamecube era of Ninty games very fondly though especially paper mario and the 2 zeldas
1. Zelda Ocarina of Time.
2. Super Smash Bros Melee
3. Maniac Mansion (NES)
4. Mario Kart Wii
5. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
But #4 and #5 could change... Super Mario Bros 1 or Star Fox 64 could make the top 5
Bug Fables might be my favourite game of all time, and I only started playing it back in January. I heavily encourage everyone to give it a play, phenomenal game.
My list would be:
1.) Heores of Might and Magic III
2.) Mario Kart Double Dash
3.) Super Smash Bros Melee
4.) Pikmin 2
5.) Digimon World
So it has been over 15 years for me.
1 - Xenoblade Chronicles (Definitive specially)
2 - Zelda Majora's Mask (OG 64, 3DS version is a different game)
3 - Final Fantasy VIII
4 - Smash Ultimate
5 - Pokémon Colosseum/XD
Nevertheless, many games were groundbreaking for me in recent years, RE2 Remake, Bloodborne, Deus Ex Human Revolution, every Xenoblade game, Breath of the Wild, I don't like them more than my top 5, but for pure emotional reasons, as I play those more than my actual top 5.
@FroZtedFlakerZz im glad ss is in your top 5 id say its in mine as well. Such an underrated game.
Holy crap. A Heroes III lover! Love that game to death
@JackyChang yeah bug fables is incredible.
@Classic603 I loved the art style, and having extra buttons was a nice QoL improvement, but overall I felt like the remake didn't quite capture the charm and magic of the original.
Maybe it's nostalgia goggles to be honest. I played it as a kid way back when it first came out, and previous to that I had never played anything beyond the scope of SMB and Tetris, so it not only opened me up a new genre, but it sort of redefined what games could even be in my young mind.
I also feel like there is/was something special about how the original felt like pushed beyond the limitations of the hardware which made it feel bigger than possible. Of course with vastly superior hardware, any remake just isn't going to be able to match that feeling, and it lost a part of what made the original so special.
Additionally, I was beyond hyped for the remake when it was announced - I couldn't believe it was actually happening - and so maybe my expectations were ultimately just too high.
I still enjoyed the remake, but it's probably not even in my top 75 whereas the original is possibly my favorite - can't decide beyond the 9 or 10 games I listed.
I'm curious if you have feelings on the topic as well, or if you were just asking. Please share if you do 😃
My favorite(not what I think are the "best" games) in alphabetical order:
Super Mario bros. 3
I wasn't able to get into the original, but the remake was beautiful and thoroughly enjoyable to me!
I loved playing the remake, and I'm one of the people that loves the art style. I'll have to give the original another try! Or at least DX lol
The people on this site have such good taste 😌
#1 Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling, 2019, first played in 2020
#2 Breath of the Wild, 2017, first played in 2017
#3 Nexomon: Extinction, 2020, first played in 2020
#4 Terraria(Modded), 2011, first played in 2016
#5 Stick Fight: The Game, 2017, first played in 2021
Of course the order depends on the day and all, but Bug Fables is always #1. Number five can change at any moment, and I bet Cris Tales will go on this list the moment it releases.
Odinsphere remake on PS4. What an amazing game.
2013. Wonderful 101 is my third favorite game of all time.
1: Donkey Kong Country 2
2: Banjo Kazooie
3: Wonderful 101
4: Skies of Arcadia
5: Roller Coaster Tycoon 2
I loved Prime 2. Prime 1 was beautiful, and the locations (especially Phendrana Drifts) felt unique and well thought out.
That being said, Prime 2 really hit the sequel feeling I was looking for. It wasn't so much the same, and Dark Aether made for some awesome puzzles. Plus that light suit 😍
The ammo system sucked though. Prime 1 weapons and armor were way better
DKC2 is the perfect game
Music, character design, the levels are amazing and memorable, the controls are tight and everything works amazingly.
I would love a TRUE sequel. DKC3, DKCR and DKCTF were all decent but not nearly as good
It's not really surprising that few recent games make it into a "top five" list (in quotes because IMO it's nearly impossible to cut such a list down to five). Video games have been being made in great numbers since like 1977. Those special, defining games don't come out every year. And even if you don't play all of them, you're bound to have caught some classics over the years unless you're just starting out in gaming. It would be really odd if more than one or two of those all-time greats had been made in the last few years.
You're competing with the likes of Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Tetris, Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, SSX 3, Skyrim, Nethack, the Witcher 3, Street Fighter 2, original Civilization, X-COM, Marvel vs. Capcom, R-Type, HALO, DOOM, Resident Evil 4, and gods know how many other stone cold classics I could keep on listing.
Look at it another way: think of the top 5 novels of all time. How many of them were written in the last 5 years? The answer is obviously zero, because come ON, you're talking about books like Moby Dick, Orlando, Sense and Sensibility, the Lord of the Rings, Great Expectations, Catch-22, Dracula, the Haunting of Hill House, Gormenghast, etc., etc. You could easily come up with a top 25 before you even considered anything from the last few years. The last time a new book completely blew my mind, like absolute top literary tier, was the Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, and that is not a recent book.
That said, I think we have seen some superlatively high quality games in the last few years. BOTW is absolutely a GOAT. Horizon Zero Dawn is breathtakingly beautiful and fun to play. Slay the Spire, Dead Cells, Darkest Dungeon, X-COM 2 (and Mario vs. Rabbids), SMO, Splatoon 2 and DQ XI all get absolute top marks from me. And I've yet to get very far into Divinity:OS2, but I'm already pretty sure it will end up being yet another GOAT for me when I dig into it.
Whether or not we're living in a golden age of gaming is debatable, but it's definitely a good time to be into gaming. Not only do you have access to vast libraries of retro games, especially if you play in multiple ecosystems, but the last few years have been FULL of amazing games.
Of course, YMMV.
The last game to break the top 5 was ‘99: Final Fantasy 8. Usually after beating a Zelda game though, I debate if it belongs.
@Classic603 Yeah, I pretty much agree. Prime 2 was a perfect sequel. I may not have liked it as much as 1, but it did a great job of shaking things up while maintaining the high quality of the original. Not everything about it worked, but man, I’m glad it wasn’t just 1 all over again.
Spider-Man was the most recent game to crack the top 10 for me, bumping Last of Us to 11
09. Steve Fawkner’s Warlords
08. DuckTales (NES)
07. Super Metroid
06. Super Mario 64
05. Vandal Hearts
04. Donkey Kong Country
03. Link to the Past
02. XCOM: Enemy Unknown
01. Ocarina of Time
I also agree on Prime 3 haha. It was a gorgeous game, but the atmosphere didn't feel like the first 2. And the suit was meh. I did enjoy the hyper mode or whatever, but the rest of the game was just okay to me
If I'm not allowed to reuse games from the same series:
1) Xenoblade Chronicles Wii (2010)
2) Super Mario Sunshine (2002)
3) Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (2004)
4) Ocarina of Time (1999)
5) Sonic Adventure 2: Battle (2002)
So ya, I guess it's been over a decade since a game broke my top five. And I can't believe Xenoblade is a decade old...
Newest game to crack my top 5 would probably be cuphead. 2017 was indeed insane for quality content! Even tho we got cuphead later (played it for the first time on switch). General top 5 is giving me anxiety trying to curate. So difficult
I started letting go of nostalgia and let modem games in my personal tops.
1. Splatoon (2015)
2. Dark Souls (2011)
3. Sekiro (2019)
4. Hollow Knight (2018)
5. Xenoblade Chronicles X (2015)
With any given mood, Hades (2020), Into The Breach (2018), Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018), or Breath Of The Wild (2017) could be there as well.
I still have my classic top 5:
1. Super Mario World
2. Zelda: LTTP
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Street Fighter III: Third Strike
5. Super Metroid
But honestly I’d rather go back to something more recent - you can truly never go home again.
@Digitamamon64 Heroes III is a masterpiece and dirt cheap on Gog.com. In fact, I introduced it to my wife and we still play it about 3-4 times a year. My daughter also loves it. Glad to find a fellow fan!
My top 5 has drastically changed over the past few years. It used to be full of old favorites.. And I do mean old. Used to, the newest game was Twilight Princess. And upon realizing how damn OLD my top 5 actually was, I decided to replay them. The ugly truth is that I was having more fun with newer games. Not because "Ooo, shiny!" But because game developers are learning to make better games.
1. My Time At Portia
2. Outer Wilds
5. Creature In The Well
@Classic603 That's totally fair. While I know I'm not alone in loving the original, without a doubt some of that love comes from the time and place.
If you decide to replay it, just remind yourself that it came out almost 30 years ago, and in 1993, it felt like a miracle to play something so big, and so epic on the playground at recess, or in the car on the ride home from school.
Last 10 years:
1. Super Mario World
2. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
3. The Last of Us
5. Halo 2
My list is in no particular order:
1. Breath of the Wild
2. Ocarina of Time
3. Persona 4 Golden
4. Hollow Knight
5. Xenoblade Chronicles
I'm still recovering from 1998:
Ocarina Of Time
Metal Gear Solid
Spyro the Dragon
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit
Tomb Raider 3
If I would pick the year of gaming with the most favorite games in it. Of all time is another matter to ponder upon
FF7 Remake cracked the top 5. Persona 5 Royale (replacing Persona 5) cracks the top 10 and on a certain day maybe a top 5. Last year was wild. And I'm old
Conisidering I had a 14 year hiatus from gaming, the first game to get me out of that was Shadow of the Colossus. A friend lent me his ps2 when I was laid off at pandemic, Played and beat Shadow 3-4 times then read a ton about BOTW and bought a Switch Lite to play it, 180 hours later I still play it once a week at least. Last system before Switch was GameCube and I really loved Metroid and Eternal Darkness.
Been playing the crap out of Hades and Subnautica recently. Hades is a masterwork IMO.
5) Metroid Prime
4) Eternal Darkness
2) Shadow of the Colossus
1) BOTW ( by a looooong shot )
Persona 5 and Death Stranding got into my top five last year.
@ok1 A lot of good reasons to pick Splatoon over Splatoon 2. Number 1 reason is sheer impact and surprise. It really came out of nowhere and surpassed all expectations. Number 2 is the map screen on the Wii U is far superior to the map button. Other good reasons are map design and philosophy (S2 has more snowball maps and very strong forward positions for offense so it’s harder to wrest back map control), a weapon balance favoring range over speed (some preference as I play chargers, but I think matches flowed better when snipers were stronger), less special spamming, higher tick rate thus smoother online play, arguably better soundtrack, no dualies (subjective again, but I think they’re very not fun to play against with low tick and straight broken on a laggy connection).
Splatoon 2 has the better single-player (with October Expansion), awesome charge storing mechanic, more viable play styles overall, and unique and super fun Splatfest maps.
I thought my top 5 was locked in due to nostalgia, but then came Breath of the Wild
I finished Xenoblade 1 about three months ago, it's now my #2 behind Persona 5
In no particular order:
Breath of the Wild
Mario Kart 8
Breath of the Wild and Sonic Racing Transformed are tied for number one, but the next are all tied.
I have been playing video games too long to only have a top 5. So many games so many different reasons.
1) Breath of the Wild (Wii U/Switch)
1) Sonic Racing Transformed (Wii U/PC)
2) Lunar: Eternal Blue (SEGA CD)
2) The Legend of Zelda (NES)
2) Life Force (NES)
2) Splatoon (Wii U)
2) Contra (NES)
2) Star Flight (Genesis)
2) Power Monger (Sega CD)
2) Wii Sports/Wii Sports Club (Wii/Wii U)
2) Nintendo Land (Wii U)
2) NHL 94 (SEGA CD)
My top 5
Dragon quest XI s
@Hikingguy Life Force, yes! I have happy memories of beating that game many a time with my little brother
I think Forza Horizon 4 was the last game to crack my top 5
1) Jedi Outcast (PC Version)
2) Banjo Kazooie
3) Mario Odessy
5) Castlevania SoTN
Depending on the day Zelda BoTW or OoT also can be in there.
Top 5: (No Specific Order)
1- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2- Resident Evil Remake
3- Tomb Raider 2
4- Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
5- Half Life 2
@SolarJetman I have a special memory of playing with my son.
@B238ben Into the Breach is bloody brilliant
It”s within 5 years, although it could eventually be within the last year, depending on how high Hades rises.
1. Chrono Trigger
2. Breath of the Wild
4. Portal 2
5. Batman: Arkham City
6. (Almost 5b) Hades
@Steelhead Heist is fantastic
I doubt anything is ever changing my Top 5 games of all time.
But here's mine
Final Fantasy X
Super Mario World
Legend of Zelda Alttp
5) Super Mario RPG
4) Final Fantasy Tactics
3) Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
2) Final Fantasy 8
The last games to crack my Top 5 was Megaman Zero 2 and Metroid Prime, both 18 years ago. 2003 was quite the year.
The other 3 are;
Phantasy Star Online
Gunstar Heroes/Yoshi's Island (I find it very had to seperate these two)
Why is everyone’s list wrong? The correct answer, in no particular order is:
Sensible Soccer (Amiga 500)
Diddy Kong Racing (N64)
Dirt 2.0 (PS4)
Decathlon (Atari 2600)
Nobody said Grindstone? 😯
1. SUPER MARIO MAKER 2
2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
3. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
4. Super Mario Odyssey
5. Splatoon 2
Probably a couple of years ago, when Skyrim on Switch finally clicked with me and smashed Breath of the Wild into oblivion.
The last game to make my top 5: Stardew Valley. I'm probably over 300 hours into the game at that point and each time i hear a few notes of the fantastic musics, i feel a urge to go back to it instantly.
Otherwise, the rest of it is pretty old:
Zelda A Link to the Past
Super Mario 3
The thing is, for a long time i didn't have the money to buy games or systems, and i missed out on a decade of video games i'm now trying to catch up to. And considering the number of classics that came out the last decade, that list is bound to change for sure !
Big gap in my gaming history so I'm playing catch-up since last year and getting over-excited about newer stuff which seems so much fancier than gaming from the 90s and early 2000s, but most of my usual top choices have more to do with nostalgia than anything so I'll be bold and chuck in 2 from 2017 (although 2020 for me personally.)
Also I've re-written this list about eight times in five minutes and have already changed my mind. Top 5 too hard!
1 Rocket Knight Adventures
2 Phantasy Star IV
3 Heroes Of Might And Magic 3
5 Hollow Knight
Probably most of the Turrican series
Last year actually with the amazing Hades . My top 5 is:
Final Fantasy X
The Witcher 3
It's kind of funny, whenever I think of my favourite games of all time Nintendo games never come to my mind even though I'm a huge fan of their games. I think they are just lacking that special something that pushes them towards GOAT material. Metroid Prime and Super Metroid are the closest so far for me.
I suppose that'd be Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, if its not Top 5 then it should be at least Top 10. I don't really remember too clearly when it was when I got into that game but I'm pretty sure it was somewhere around the time when the 3DS had either just released or about to be released.
Castlevania Symphony of the Night is another newcomer that broke my Top 10 (sort of) recently, I didn't get to try that game until I got it in the PS3 store, and I was definitely a late comer to the PS3 train, IIRC I got the system slightly before Soul Calibur 5 released because that was ultimately the game that made me want that system.
So around 10 years ago on both counts.
I had this whole Top 92 games of all time list planned not too long ago actually but somehow I've managed to lose it at some point, probably when I switched to a new laptop around last summer.
But if now had to list my Top 10 it'd be like:
1. Suikoden 2
2. Chrono Trigger
3. Breath of Fire 2
4. Final Fantasy 5
5. Super Metroid
6. Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne
7. Parasite Eve 2
8. Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon
9. Castlevania Symphony of the Night
10. Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey
Other games I could swap around to the list depending on my mood include stuff like: Dragon Quest 4, Phantasy Star 4, Resident Evil 4, Advance Wars Days of Ruin, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, Sin & Punishment and Axelay
The last game I enjoyed a lot was Metroid Prime 2 echoes, which is starting to be a bit old lol. It's not that games aren't getting better, but I don't enjoy them as much as what I was a teenager.
As of recent games I loved, I can mention Zelda BotW, Super Mario Odyssey and Red Dead Redemption 2.
But most of my favourite games are from the N64/Gamecube era.
1. GTA: San Andreas
2. Zelda: BOTW
3. Deus Ex: The conspiracy
4. PES 2008
5. Mario vs Donkey Kong
The only ones that immediately come to my mind (from the last 5-10 years):
Ori and the Blind Forest
Super Mario Odyssey
The LAST time. The most recent, that would be Mario+ Rabbids.
There are a few that I fell in love with over the Switch years,
Hollow Knight (obvs)
Ori (one and two)
Binding of Isaac (Yes i was late to the game but still go back to it)
Yoku's Island Express
To name a few.
I dont really have a top 5 of all time as I keep on playing different games all the time
1.Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars
2. Suikoden II
3. Final Fantasy 6
4. Final Fantasy 7
5. Final Fantasy 10
Never thought a game could crack my top 5 until Breath of the Wild came along.
Also, Street Fighter II is technically my 2nd favorite game but does the Street Fighter anniversary collection 'crack' that?
anyhoot, here's the list:
5. Rock band III
4. Zelda Breath of the Wild
3. Donkey Kong Country 2
2. Street Fighter 2
1. Final Fantasy VII
This is a super hard question to answer because I've played SO MANY fantastic games on a number of game systems, especially since the start of the digital era. My top 5 have been pretty much set in stone for a while:
1) Saturn Bomberman (Saturn)
2) Shining Force III (Saturn)
3) Xenoblade (Wii, etc.)
4) Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn)
5) Rez (Dreamcast / PS2)
Over the past few years on my Switch, I've played 7 games that I personally give a 10/10 and 6 that I give a 9/10, and I feel like at least one of these games in particular deserves to go in that list somewhere:
Yoku's Island Express
A Short Hike
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime
Opus: Rocket of Whispers
1. Star Control 2
2. Quest for Glory 3
3. Zelda BotW
4. Final Fantasy IX
5. Front Mission 3
But it's always versatile and fluid except for the top-2. Those will stand there until the end of time.
My top 5 rotates all the time. One month it’ll include a Thunder Force game and another month it’ll be replaced by something like Astral Chain. There’s no All Time Five Games
I guess it's a hard one since there are so many great games. Also it rotates very often from time to time. I guess I would go for this list at the moment:
1. Banjo Tooie
2. Zelda: Ocarina of Time / The Windwaker
3. Donkey Kong Country 2
4. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
5. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
Currently it is heavily dominated by nostalgia though..
S: 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand
1. Def Jam: Fight for NY
2. Europa Universalis 4
3. The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind
4. Doom: Eternal
5. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Choosing a top 10 is hard enough.
Making a top 5 of all time is so damn hard. Let me try to write down 5 games in order of release.
Terranigma (SNES) 1995
Wave Race 64 (N64) 1996
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) 1998
Pokémon 2nd Gen (GB) 1999
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II - Rogue Leader (GCN) 2001
Mafia (PC) 2002
Planetside (PC) 2003
Wii Sports Resort (Wii) 2009
Anno 2070 (PC) 2011
Mario Kart 8 (WiiU) 2014
Splatoon (WiiU) 2015
Life is Strange (PC) 2015
Sorry had to extend to 12 titles.
Not in a particular order, but:
The legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Yeah, as you can see, the last year was the last time a game made it into my list.
It probably has more to do with your age when those games came out. During our teenage years we have more spare time than we do as adults and spend more time appreciating games. Of course there were also just less videogames about. Nowadays I find myself gravitating to the usual FIFA, Rocket League and Apex, not because I feel they are masterpieces, but because they are quick and I know what I am getting myself into.
For reference my Top 5 are:
1. Final Fantasy X (2001)
2. Child Of Light (2014)
3. Elite Beat Agents (2006)
4. LoZ Wind Waker (2002)
5. FF Tactics Advance (2003)
Also in no particular order:
Hades (the most recent)
Super Mario Galaxy
Affordable Space Adventures (sublime in every respect and so underrated).
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Gears of War 3
Edit: also the first Shenmue
krakout (c64, 1987)
World ends with you
Last year's... circumstances... let me experience some absolute gems I had on my backlog. The biggest were Hollow Knight, Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon (thanks, Chuggaaconroy!) and BOTW (I REALLY need to play Odyssey still, but that'll have to wait for now).
1. Hollow Knight
2. Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon
4. Pokémon B2W2
5. Smash Ultimate
Top 5 is too short a list to come up with a quick answer for. This requires some meditation and may lead to existential considerations such as who am I, and how have I been spending the time I've been given in life so far? That said Super Mario Odyssey has to be in the vicinity of a top 5. Possibly quite high on it
Top 5 is such a difficult thing! I think that both our own experiences at the time and nostalgia heavily shape these opinions. And then there's the fact that you might think a game is in your top 5, but maybe due to reasons - such as that particular console is in storage, or the time commitment to play is too much - you might simply just not want to go through the fuss of starting it again... so is is REALLY in your top 5?
I can't think of 5, but games like Deus Ex (the first one) and Super Mario World are in there. Hades could well be in there as well though, given the enjoyment I've had from it and how much I've played it in the last year!
It varies though the last time was less than a year ago with Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition. In no specific order, the top 5 games that come to mind currently are:
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe got knocked out of the top 5 due to content drought. What put Mario Kart 8 (Wii U) above the other Mario Kart games was that while the base game was brilliant Nintendo didn't stop there, they added 2 fantastic DLC packs so when Mario Kart 8 Deluxe came to Switch with all the Wii U content and some extras I was really hoping that Nintendo would continue adding new content to the game over the Switch's lifespan but outside of a few minor updates like Labo support it didn't happen.
Usually I have a top 3 for each console but I would say:
Final Fantasy 7
MGS 4 (call me crazy)
The world ends with you (for DS)
But I'm hopeful Ghost of Tsushima will crack the list
Oof this is so hard. Funny that the majority of our top 5's are nostalgia driven, I never even thought about this before tbh this article blew my mind a bit because there have definitely been some amazing games in the Switch era.
I think as random as it is, Dragon Quest Builders was the one to make it into my all time faves, as well as farm together and Littlewood at a push (yeah I know it's weird I loved those games)
Splatoon 2 is one of the most important games of my life because it's the reason I bought a Switch. That's all well and good but before Switch I only owned Nintendo consoles(still do) and would play only Ninty first parties and Harvest Moon/story of seasons and now I feel like I have dabbled and enjoyed most genres because of this little machine. I would not be typing on this site if not for splatty 2 because yeah I was always a Nintendo fan but hell I'm on a whole new level now.
There are some games that I love that I would describe as genre enabling for me (games that I played of a certain genre that I loved so much that actually got me into enjoying that kind of game)
Pokemon mystery dungeon and by extension Moero Chronicle Hyper- dungeon crawlers/1st person dungeon crawlers respectively
Tales of Vesperia- JRPGS both turn based and ARPG's
Hatsune Miku mega mix - gateway drug to rhythm games even though muse dash and groovecoaster are my faves now
Mario and Rabbids- tactical RPGS
Megaquarium- management sim games
Special mention to Pokemon Y in which I had the max amount of hours on the 3DS 999:99 and that was all active play. I have never beaten the record on time spent since, closest thing was New Horizons with 675. Most games by the 50 hour mark I am burning out so yeah that amount of time is crazy for me.
Extra extra mention to the N64 Pokemon games because the memories of playing them with my mum are literally the fondest of my childhood, and new horizons for similar reasons. I actually like new leaf better, but with the events of last year me and my sister teamed up to buy mum a switch and I think that game and the interactions we had within it are the reasons she mentally survived the lockdowns. She is going to buy actual real bug nets to hit eachother with now for old times XD
So I guess top 5 even though the games I have mentioned are just super important to me.
Story of seasons (the first one)
Harvest Moon AWL
Dragon Quest builders (1 specifically) but I love 2 as well
I haven't really thought about my favorite games ever, but let's see:
1. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (2000)
2. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (2017)
3. Final Fantasy IX (2000)
4. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)
5. Xenoblade Chronicles (2010)
So, roughly 3 years ago was the last time a video game blew my mind. And if there is someone I have faith is able to do it again, it's MonolithSoft.
Hmm hard to really make a top 5.. Some of my favourites are; Persona 5, Witcher 3, Life is Strange, The Longest Journey, Bioshock, Hollow knight..
My "top 5" is constantly changing, depending on the mood I am in.
In the last year alone, I have fallen head over heels in love with Super Mario RPG, Mother 3, Yooka Laylee AIL, A Short Hike, MegaMan 2, Castlevania III, Super Mario 35...
I wrote these as my top 5 back in January...
1) Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)
2) Perfect Dark (2000)
3) Metroid Prime (2002)
4) Banjo-Tooie (2000)
5) Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (2000)
Since then, I have fallen in love with the original Super Mario Bros (All-Stars Version) and DKC games (1 and 2, not played 3 yet) on NSO. Also loved Ori and the Blind Forest and Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. Unsure if any of those 5 games crack my top-5 but they are up there.
Witcher 3 was the sneaky one. I've had it since launch on PS4 and it just never clicked till I picked it up on Switch.
1-World of Warcraft
3-Super Mario World
I will never understand the concept of a Top-List.
I'm in my 30s, know what I like, and live in the past, so my list is:
1) Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990)
2) Donkey Kong Country 2
3) Wario Land 2 (1998)
4) Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade (2002)
5) Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen (2004)
In chronological order, entertainingly enough, not intentional. I keep it to one game per franchise, otherwise I'd be arguing with myself for all eternity over picking just five.
In no particular order;
Marvel Spiderman (PS4)
Spyro 2 Ripto's Rage (PS1)
Modern Warfare 2 (PS3)
Pokemon Crystal (GBC)
Breath of the Wild is the newest and only real constant in my top 5. Well, Paper Mario would be in there too, and probably Pokemon Platinum, but after that I'm struggling. If I'm put on the spot to choose my favourite games I tend to forget every video game I like
@TheBigK nice list but would love to see your top 5 Super Mario games and top 5 DKC games...
I’m currently playing through both series. Currently near the end of both DKC2 and SMB3... I just prefer DKC2 to SMB3 but both are superb.
@Ulanda it's just for funzees.
I don’t think anything post-2000 has cracked my Top 5, though it’s close. Mario Odyssey came closest I think.
Clearly I am old, and nostalgia makes certain games unbeatable.
In no specific order:
1 Counter Strike 1.6 or GO
2 World of Warcraft
3 Final Fantasy 7
5 Super Metroid
Got a pretty extensive Nintendo collection but I def prefer PC
Thing is, I don't have top fives among games, mostly top tiers which can include standalone games and franchises alike (sufficiently big franchises like Final Fantasy may have tiers of their own). Tales, Rune Factory and Xenoblade, Bioshock, Dishonored and Need for Speed, Stories: The Path of Destinies, Layers of Fear and Crusader of Centy, The Liar Princess, Fire Emblem and Summon Night Swordcraft Story... they're all there and not half the extent of my favourites.
As for last year, even literally counting it from late last May encompasses a whole bunch of games that have been leaving a profound impression on me - Ciel Fledge and Shadows of Valentia, Exist Archive and Burnout Paradise, Mary Skelter and Headliner, Dead or School and The Long Journey Home, Forgotton Anne and Dust: An Elysian Tail, My Time at Portia and Will: A Wonderful World, Spiritfarer and Battle Chef Brigade, Void Terrarium and Resident Evil... all just the MOST prominent experiences so far, mind you.
Maybe I'm just more easily fascinated despite my ~25 years as a gamer? Or is it more about being a literary profile philologist with a trained interest boost towards the many trope combinations others yawn at? Whatever the case, here we are - games new and overduly discovered remain a bottomless ocean of enticing journeys for me; the whole world could stop making games for a decade, and I would likely still be drowning in my interactive fiction backlogs by the time that hiatus ends.
I love lists! And talking about them
1) Slay the Spire
2) Breath of the Wild
5) Nier Automata
1-3 set in stone, 4 and 5 change with the weather
Super Mario Maker 2 is the perfect Mario experience with abundance of content. How can it not be among my favourite games of all time?
@WoomyNNYes Congratulations, out of 250 posts that I've read, yours comes closest to mine, just by virtue of having both BotW and Mario Kart 8 in. Rocket League could squeeze into mine too on a good day. And I couldn't rule out Mario Odyssey too, but I've not played enough of it yet. I would have a tough time distinguishing between Odyssey, Galaxy and SM3DW, but SM3DW would probably have to get the spot due to family co-op time.
Last year I've had 2 games crack my top 5. A Short Hike and NBA Hangtime (the latter which I rediscovered after getting the Arcade 1up). My Top 5 are Sonic 2, Night in the Woods, A Short Hike, NBA Hangtime and #5 fluctuates between certain golf games like Mario Golf: World Tour, Golden Tee (Arcade 1up) and Everybody's Golf. The latter 2 golf games which I also discovered last year, so it's almost like 3 games have cracked my Top 5 recently.
However, after all my years of gaming, my Top 20 or so is so rock solid that any of these could take a Top 5 spot depending on my mood when I replay them: Mario 64, Borderlands, Halo, Towerfall Ascension, Duck Game, Klonoa, Zelda Ocarina of Time, Starfox 64, Ghost Trick, Persona 4, the Ori games, Dead Cells, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, Big Buck Hunter World (Arcade 1up).
I also think there’s about a dozen games on my Switch right now that could happily sit in my top 20. We’ve never had it so good.
'Breath of the wild', is the last game to break into my, top 5 games of all time.
1.Advance Wars dual strike (ds)
2.Breath of the wild (switch)
3.Mortal Kombat 2 (mega drive)
4.Jungle Strike (mega drive)
5.Tony Hawks Pro skater 3 (Gba)
My top five is pretty locked in,, the rest of top ten can change depending on my mood at the time.. I don't have access to games like Goldeneye anymore or a lot of my favourite Dreamcast games, I miss viewtiful Joe also, fingers crossed Capcom do a third.
1. Halo 3
2. Tales of Symphonia
3. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
4. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
5. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Plenty of new games have broke into my top ten but not the top 5 yet
@kurtasbestos It's nice to see a Bomberman game at #1. I never played Saturn, but I heard it was really good.
The most recent one to crack my top 5 would be Fire Emblem: Three Houses. I think it's brilliant. Here's my top five, in no particular order:
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Persona 4: Golden
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Resident Evil 4
@PBandSmelly I finally played undertale at the beginning of the year and it definitely made it into my top 5. Finally beating sans at the end of the genocide route still feels like one of my greatest gaming achievements, but the true pacifist ending made me tear up. The thing I love most about the game though is the humor! (I could go on, but I'll stop here XD)
In no particular order, here's my top 5
1. Breath of the Wild
3. Luigi's Mansion
4. Super Mario Odyssey
5. Cuphead and Hollow Knight are tied for a spot in my top 5...
Also want to put Banjo Kazooie and some other Zelda titles in there, but I'll 'em for my top 10 I guess... Lol
My top 3 (Majora's Mask, Final Fantasy IX, Ace Attorney 3) are close to being set in stone, but there are like a dozen different games that could slot into the last 2 spots, depending on what mood I'm in on a given day.
So sometimes relatively recent games like Breath of the Wild or Dragon Quest XI S are in there sometimes, though Animal Crossing: New Leaf was probably the most recent game before them that felt like it had truly cracked my personal top 5.
Age probably has a lot to do with the answers here. The older you are, the bigger the list of games you've played across a whole host of different consoles and generations, and the harder for something new to break into that coveted "top 5" spot.
I'm not sure that anything has broken into my personal favorite list since Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii... but I'm old as dirt. Hard to know if having so many years of gaming experience makes my opinion more valuable, or if it just means I'm a crotchety old gamer with outdated views...
Hades cracked mine last year (or this year rather, cause that's when I played it). Otherwise BOTW came out 4 years ago and that is still my number one. If I had to make a list it would probably be:
2) Fire Emblem Awakening
3) Doney Kong Tropical Freeze
5) Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island
FE 3 Houses and the original Ace Attorney trilogy are high up as well.
Since I've played about 3x more Switch games than on any other console, my top ten is pretty Switch centric. On the other hand, some of my favourite games of all time, I played in my childhood (Yoshi's Island was my first ever game).
This list is mostly solid could fluctuate a little with X.
1. Final Fantasy VI
2. Chrono Trigger
3. LOZ A link to the past.
5. Xenoblade chronicles X
Earthbound, FFiv, Xenoblade 1 or 2, Etrian Odyssey IV, Suikoden 2, Secret of Mana, Atelier Ryza 2, Crosscode, Gris.
Breath of the Wild almost immediately broke into my top 5 in 2017, so I'm barely in the "in the last 5 years" group.
Donkey Kong Country
Golden Eye 007
Super Mario Odyssey
Also: Kaze and the Wild Masks, CarX Drift Racing, DKC2, Yooka Layla and the Impossible Lair, Yoshis Woolly World, Yoshis Crafted World, CTR nitro fueled, Arms, The Touryst, Hot Shot Racing, BoTW, 51 World Wide Games, GRID 2019, Super Hot, Asphalt 9, Duke Nukem, GRIS, Gunman Clive, Lonely Mountain Downhill, Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Mario Kart 64, Trackmania Turbo
EarthBound phased out Chrono Trigger and Terranigma. Meanwhile Xenoblade Chronicles X, Collection of Mana, Mother 3, Paper Mario, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and Undertale are close follow ups in the RPG genre.
Super Mario Odyssey kicked Super Mario 64 from its 3D platformer throne.
Breath of the Wild has more to offer than my previous favourites The Wind Waker and Majora's Mask combined.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has everyone and more here and still a couple to come.
So, my Top 5 must be EarthBound, Super Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, Xenoblade Chronicles X, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate now. Yeah, the Switch truly shaked up my Top 5 in recent years.
@BloodNinja F-Zero X is criminally underrated.
Maybe 2016 with Paper Mario Colour Splash.
But I'm playing Little Town Hero at the moment and I think that could also get in my top 5.
I only like games @gcunit likes.😠 (😁😉)
I played through the great Switch port of Bioshock Infinite: Complete Edition a few weeks ago and was really impressed by how fun, impressive and well made it was, so that one quickly turned into my Top 10. Before that it was probably Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Mario Odyssey might make the Top 10 cut too.
Mario kart double dash
@KevynOnVideo It’s easily the best F Zero, in my book. Even after years of playing it I still find it thrilling.
@WoomyNNYes Similar to my list...and I’ve just start Forza Horizon 4
Copied from my backloggery profile:
10. Little Busters! Converted Edition
09. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
06. The World Ends with You
05. BRAVELY SECOND: END LAYER
04. Tales of the Abyss
03. The Nonary Games
02. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
01. Persona 5
@DreemWeever I've played Horizon 3 & 4 at my brother's. Love that Porsche 918. After I get my second vaccine shot, we're going to boot up Horizon 2 It's new to us.
Love that Rocket League. I've got over a 1000 hours in there now. So fun. Currently, aspiring for diamond.
Super Mario Odyssey was the last to crack my top 5. Although, I am playing through Everhood right now and that might sneak in there.
My top five, in no particular order.
Final Fantasy VII
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
God of War (2018)
It's kinda funny that four of my top five games are made in 1997-1998
It's very hard to choose, but here's my list anyway:
1. Super Mario World
2. Zelda - A Link to the past
3. Super Street Fighter 2
4. Mario Kart 64
5. Tomb Raider
It is difficult for me to make a top 5 or even a top 10 list of favorite games, because there are so many great games that I have played over the years and loved. But I am pretty sure that the three games that I have liked best is Ocarina of Time, Chrono Trigger and Breath of the Wild. All of these games are incredibly good, and if I have to rank them Ocarina wins because of the nostalgia, with Chrono Trigger in second place and BotW in third place (BotW is still fairly new, and I did not play Chrono Trigger until I got the Nintendo DS version in 2009).
Other of my favorite games that could have been on a top 5 or a top 10 list includes among others Resident Evil 4, Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Mario World, Mega Man X, Yoshi's Island, Zelda - A Link to the Past, Super Castlevania IV, Super Punch-Out!!, Goldeneye 007, ISS 98, Perfect Dark, Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, SSX Tricky, Chibi-Robo and Skyrim.
@JuiceMan_V This is a great list. I also have Soulcalibur as my all time favorite.
I was thinking about this recently, and my top 5 probably hasn't changed since the 90s:
2. Super Mario 64
3. Secret of Mana
4. Perfect Dark
5. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
What a year 1997 was for me - I was playing Mario 64 and Terranigma at the same time!
Another retro game, Super Probotector (Contra III: The Alien Wars) is probably the closest anything has come since.
For modern games, Breath of the Wild and Full Metal Furies come closest. Even though I consider those 2 all-time favourites, they probably wouldn't make my top 20 because there are so many great games. The SNES was pretty much the perfect era for me, as the games play just as great today. DKC2 and Super Mario World are still the peak of 2D plaforming. That's one of the things I love about Full Metal Furies actually - it often feels like a combination of some of the best SNES games.
2. Zelda BOTW
3. Final Fantasy VI
4. Mario 3
5. Super Metroid
It was very tough for me to keep Mega Man 2 and Street Fighter II off this list, but in the end I cannot rank them above any of these top 5.
Last new top five entry was La Mulana 2 in 2018.
1. Super Mario Sunshine
2. Pokemon Gen 1 (any version)
3. La Mulana 2
4. Wonderboy in Monster World
5. Mario Kart Double Dash
1 - Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES)
2 - Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (PS3/PS4)
3 - Sonic Unleashed (X360/PS3)
4 - Dragon Age Inquisition (Xbone/PS4)
5 - YS VIII Lacrimosa of Dana (PS4/Switch)
Honerable mentions to: Trails of Cold Steel, Super Mario Galaxy and Zelda: Twilight Princess
Ori and the Will of the Wisps! That was GotY for me in 2020 and I replayed it again a few months and it blew me away a second time. The other game recent game (relatively speaking) that comes to mind is A Link Between Worlds.
1. A Link to the Past
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Ori and the Will of the Wisps
4. A Link Between Worlds
5. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
2004 - Paper Mario TTYD
2012 - Xenoblade Chronicles (US release)
2017 - Hollow Knight (PC version)
2014 - Fantasy Life (US release)
2016 - Owlboy (PC release)
Took some thinking on this one but here's my list. TTYD will likely always be my favorite game and Xenoblade likely always 2nd, but Hollow Knight came close to taking that. This was difficult to choose but I feel like it was a good exercise to think about what games I like and the reasons I like them which seem to be mainly due to the gameplay and story elements as well as the writing and world building in general.
Technically speaking, I rearranged my number 6 and 5 slots just a few weeks ago, as my appreciation for number 6 has grown in the past year. My list will undoubtedly be a unique read, at least on this site:
1. Kirby Mass Attack (2011, played in 2012)
2. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (2004, played in 2005 and all throughout childhood)
3. Pandora's Tower (2013; played in 2015, 2018, 2021)
4. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (2013, played in 2013 and at various points in high school and college)
5. Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! (1996, played in 2011 and at various points in high school and college)
5 (previous). Kirby's Return to Dream Land (2011, played in 2011 and at various points in high school and college)
in the last year alone i've played 30+ games, including:
I'd say at least 2 of those crack my top 5 and all of them crack my top 10. There are a lots of classics we missed so im trying to focus on them rather than just new games
In no particular order:
Now that I think of it, I know I have many that I absolutely adore and are right up there.
But the only 2 I'm hands down certain on is Final Fantasy 7 & 8 being my joint favourite games of all time where they have remained since they got there.
Most recent for breaking top 10 would have to be FF7R for certain, that may even be top 5.
Rise comes very close but is still ongoing so I don't think it breaks it yet albeit it is my favourite MH.
It's incredibly difficult to judge really. But some others that are definitely around there are-
Streets of Rage 2
Fire Emblem Birthright
Super Mario Odyssey was the latest addition to my top 5. It changes based on how I'm feeling, but right now I would say my top 5 are: Legend of Zelda Windwaker, Super Mario Odyssey, Pokemon Heartgold, Super Mario World, Persona 5
In the last five years, in other words BotW.
Man, that's a tough one.
Probably Hollow Knight or Breath of the Wild, as the newest games in my likely top ten.
That said, most of my recent "discoveries" and new favorites are on the older side: Doom, Half-Life, Final Fantasy VII, and the original The Legend of Zelda.
I don't think videogames are getting worse (or better, for that matter). Every era has its classics. But with mainstream videogaming being over 40 years old by now, if your gaming diet is wide-ranging, you're going to end up with a lot of "retro" favorites, because there's just more there than whatever's come out in the last few years.
@B_Lindz I remember when my dad got that game for me on my birthday and it was incredible.
I think there's something to that. I never played the original and loved the remake last year, but... every time I see footage of the original, I kind of wish I had played that, instead. I can't really compare the remake to the original, but I did play A Link to the Past and the first Legend of Zelda at around the same time in 2020, and I just felt like those 2D games felt faster and more satisfying to play than the toybox isometric thing from the Link's Awakening remake, which was comparatively methodical. Still a beautiful experience, but there's a charm and coherence to the old aesthetic, too.
Too 5 is limiting to me, personally. 10 is a more reasonable number in terms of guessing. With 10, I'd definitely put this down (no order):
Ori and the Blind Forest (2015)
Pokémon HeartGold (2010)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017)
Super Mario Galaxy (2007)
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (2014)
Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped (1998) (played 2001)
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018)
Slay the Spire (2019)
Sonic Mania (2017)
In terms of release date and play date, Hades is certainly the most recent game that released and the most-loved game I've played in recent years. Some are interchangeable with games I think are just below the top 10 (Cuphead, Pikmin, Overwatch, FighterZ, Spyro 1)
For me, it was Kentucky Route Zero (which I finished earlier this year). I've never experienced a game quite like it. It's eerie, immersive, beautiful, and meaningful. It's the first game that has managed to knock Mass Effect off my number one spot.
Before that, Bioshock Infinite cracked my top 5 when I played all the way through it for the first time a few years ago (the Xbox One version in my case). Gorgeous visuals, fun gameplay, and an amazing story.
Here's my current top 5:
1. Kentucky Route Zero
2. Mass Effect
3. Bioshock Infinite
4. Mass Effect 2
5. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Smash Wii U might seem like an odd choice, but I feel like Nintendo got everything right with that one. For Glory mode was my jam. I was so into it that I could even be happy at losing because of the incredible skill on display from my online opponents. I've never had so much fun with a fighting game. Unfortunately, Nintendo kind of ruined things with Smash Ultimate by ditching the For Glory and For Fun modes and replacing them with a system which makes it so that I'm rarely playing the way I want to play.
It's really hard for me to put all the games I've played on a list.
100% guilty of nostalgia for how older game made me feel biasing my top titles…but BotW was a exception that pieced through that to enter my top 5.
Tough question. Had to think about it for a few days. What games are in my top five, so another game can be better to crack it. There are so many games that influenced me and could be there. Sonic 1-3, Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Mario Kart, PES, Assassins Creed 2, Final Fantasy X and XII, Jak & Daxter, Soul Calibur, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Skyrim, Fallout 3, GTA 3, Hollow Knight or even Warcraft 2, Monkey Island 2, Might & Magic 6-8. But I will go with BotW like so many others. And it's not the only Zelda game here, Twilight Princess is the other one.
After careful consideration and in in no particular order here are my personal top five most influential games:
1. Sonic 1/ Monkey Island 2 (my first games ever)
2. Mario 64 (first own game on first own console)
3. Twilight Princess (comes as close as a game can to save my soul)
4. Assassins Creed 2/ Fallout 3/ Skyrim (played them when I first lived all alone)
5. BotW (start into my gaming life as a parent)
@DjinnFighter I've played a lot of Bomberman games over the years, and Saturn Bomberman is absolutely the best. Everything about it is just fantastic... the hand-drawn artwork, the amazing soundtrack, the spot-on controls, down to all kinds of little details like the transition animations in between levels and the fact that they actually planned for someone murdering their teammates enough to get -100 points in a "kill the other team not your own you idiot" competition. And then of course there's the whole 10-player thing... I've lived in six cities in two different countries since I first bought the game, and I've managed to scrape together enough people to use all 10 of my Saturn controllers in all of those places. Ahhh, the nostalgia. If only I hadn't spent so much of my time in high school and college playing this game, I bet I could have been so much more successful in life. But at least I can someday tell my grandchildren that in my youth I entered a staggering TWO Saturn Bomberman tournaments and won them both.
Nintendo finally cracked my top 5 during the Switch years. Twice.
#1 Breath of the Wild
#2 Fallout 3
#3 Diablo II
#4 Fire Emblem: Three Houses
1) Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
2) Fire Emblem: Three Houses
3) Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy
4) Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition
5) Disgaea 4 Complete+
Zelda breath of the wild
