You're probably tired of E3 coverage by now, and believe us, so are we. But it's been a week since Nintendo's Direct, and now that the dust has settled, it's time for us to pick our actual favourites rather than just following our adrenaline-fuelled gut feelings.
Of course, this year was a little strange. In past years, we might have flown off to LA to get our mitts on these games in a loud, sweaty conference centre, which often ends up affecting how we feel about the games. There's nothing like the excitement of being given a one-on-one with the lead developer as they finally show their game to the world, after all — and it's hard to replicate that sitting on your sofa at home.
Then again, E3 has a dress code, and we doubt they would have let us play the next Mario game in our pyjamas, so the all-digital conference is a welcome reprieve from having to put clothes on. Ugh.
Anyway, without further ado, here are the winners for us from 2021's E3!
Thomas Whitehead

My favourite announcements were the same as most others (Metroid Dread and Link's BoTW 2 hair) BUT, in the interest of variety, a few other things caught my eye.
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is a very welcome sequel and looks fantastic. I'm also excited about Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, its art style is awesome. One of the most entertaining streams, meanwhile, was Limited Run Games, which actually made me laugh out loud multiple times. The 'reveal' of River City Girls 2 and 'Zero' was funny in the sense we couldn't even tell if it was a reveal. That was a fun moment to share with everyone in the live blog.
Ryan Craddock

I know it's the most predictable one to choose, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that Metroid Dread not only had me the most excited during the Direct itself, but is also the one E3 reveal that I've not been able to stop thinking about ever since. Seriously, just inject it into my veins.
Elsewhere, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope looks absolutely lovely (even if it was kinda spoiled a few hours before Ubisoft's show), and I was really glad to see that a Zelda Game & Watch is on the way because I seem to enjoy nothing more than buying expensive collector's items that sit on my shelf and don't get used.
Gavin Lane

Surprise — it's Metroid!
I mean, I’d love to be a unique snowflake here, but it’s got to be Metroid Dread. To see the series finally get some real love was a treat, and everything I’ve seen so far indicates it’s going to be something a bit special. Fingers crossed!
Other than that (and the fresh glimpse we got of Breath of the Wild 2), it was Advance Wars and WarioWare that stood out most for me. I’m intrigued to see how Koei Tecmo bring Maiden of Black Water over to Switch sans the Wii U Gamepad mechanics, but the return of Wario and an Intelligent Systems tactics game that doesn’t involve swords, lances and wyverns had me grinning from ear to ear while watching the Direct stream. Good show all round.
Kate Gray

Obviously my real favourite of the show was the fantastic tease of Breath of the Wild 2, but I'm going to pretend it wasn't so I can seem interesting and cool.
I have to say, I'm not much of a retro gamer, and my terrible secret is that I've never played a Metroid, so there were a few games that passed me by during the show — but as a sucker for narrative adventures and visual novels, I was VERY excited to see Danganronpa coming to the Switch. I bought a Vita to play Danganronpa! It was great!
Likewise, I'm glad to get a release date for Life Is Strange Remastered, and a release window for True Colors, and there were quite a few games in the Wholesome Direct that piqued my interest, too. But would it be cheating if I said Elden Ring was a highlight, since I highly doubt it's coming to Switch? Whatever, it's got a horse. A horse!!!
Liam Doolan

Yeah, I’m like everyone else – for me Metroid Dread was the standout of the show. I still consider Metroid Fusion on the GBA to be my favourite 2D Metroid game, and probably favourite Metroid game in general of all-time, and well… you can probably understand why I’m so excited about MercurySteam’s upcoming release. It doesn’t get much more exciting than being chased around by something you can’t actually defeat – at least right away.
Probably the other major highlight of Nintendo’s E3 Direct for me this year was the return of Advance Wars. Like many others, I’ve also been wondering why Nintendo hasn’t revived the original GBA titles sooner. I’ll admit, I wasn’t a big fan of the art style initially, but it’s quickly growing on me. And with WayForward working closely with Nintendo and Intelligent Systems – I’m confident it’s going to be great fun.
On the third-party front, I was probably most excited about the reveal of Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. After months of rumours, we finally got the confirmation of both.
Zion Grassl

Every year we go into E3 expecting the biggest and craziest game reveals imaginable. We make predictions and just have fun speculating about what could be on the horizon. So the announcements that usually get me hyped are the games that no one was expecting, which made the Advance Wars reveal one of the most exciting announcements!
The series hasn’t seen the light of day in over 13 years and at this point, I thought it was long dead and buried. Now I’ve never been the most die-hard fan of the series, I enjoyed the pummeling it gave me as a kid and I’m a sucker for tactical RPGs, but what this reveal has done for me as a whole is just give me hope. Hope that we’ll see more classic franchises revisited by the Big N. Maybe a 2D-3D remake of Golden Sun or a new, traditional Chibi Robo isn’t such a big ask anymore? Plus, if Metroid Dread can get regurgitated into a tangible game after all these years, maybe your favorite game can come back in some shape or form too.
But enough about us! We've already asked you your general thoughts, and we've told you ours, too — but now we want to know specifics. Whether you enjoyed the conference as a whole or not, you must have been excited for something, so, go on: tell us about your favourite thing from E3 2021.

BotW2 for me It will be a spectacular game!
4 votes. Danganronpa is winning. I'll cherish this at it lasts
Been wanting to play Danganronpa for ages but have been holding out for a Switch port so it was pretty exciting to see that pop up. Quite a few of the other announcements were pretty interesting/surprising but not really ones that I'm that crazy excited about.
I was very happy with what was shown. Felt like return of GameCube/GBA Nintendo.
One of the nicest surprises has been the cheap cost of some of the games shown.
Wario Ware, Cruise 'n' Blast, Sonic Colors and Monkey Ball look like they'll be able to be found for around £30 in UK physical. 😃
Yuo can't expect me to pick one in a year when we got Metroid, Warioware, Mario vs Rabbids and Advance Wars! You can't and I won't!
the. whole nintendo show. especially mario rabbids and mario party super stars and metroid and cruisin blast. from microsoft. halo and forsa 5. and psychonauts 2. those along with BOTW 2. Were my favorites.
I voted Kitaria Fables from Wholesome Indie Direct since the game will be released on physical very soon and the game was made by Indonesian peoples.
Mario Party was the main game for me, but Metroid, Zelda and advance wars were also awesome.
I didn't realize I wanted HD-2D versions of the Golden Sun series until now. Thanks Zion!
I've been wanting Metroid 5 for over a decade and a half, so you can imagine what I voted for. Finally some payoff for that "See you next mission" in Fusion!
Mario rabbids sparks of hope for me (sequel I never knew I needed). Possibly going to do a switcheroo of super Mario party out and mario party superstars in.
And maybe if I have the money, I might bag metroid dread, though I've never really thought about metroid for me (yeah I know...) .
Advance Wars all the way! I really hope this leads to more for the series.
Metroid and Advance Wars of course. I'm super excited about both. Also Wario Ware. Those games are always a lot of fun (Snapped not withstanding...)
Elden ring, Metroid and SMTV
I mean, with an avatar like mine, I'm obviously going to go with Metroid Dread.
But I also really liked what I saw of Shin Megami Tensei V and Advance Wars. And beyond the Switch, Elden Ring and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.
Zelda is my favorite franchise and I'm hyped for Breath of the Wild 2, but I don't think it's the star of this E3. Maybe next year.
That said, I hope people caught the Treehouse footage of all the Switch heavy-hitters. The trailers during the Direct were nice, but my anticipation for Dread and SMT V really grew once I saw them in motion during longer play sessions.
My absolute top games from the show were both from the Nintendo Direct, being Metroid Dread and Shin Megami Tensei V, but in terms of everything shown I'm also really psyched for Starfield, Elden Ring, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, WarioWare and Advance Wars
no mario party as alternative! come on Nintendolife!
Shin Megami Tensei V, BOTW 2 and Advance Wars. I'm also hoping that Salt and Sacrifice will make it to Switch as I'd prefer to play it handheld.
Mushihimesama hands down
How the heck is a premium third party exclusive like SMT V not an option on this list?
Anyway, SMT V, Advance Wars, and the new Mario + Rabbids are probably my top three. Looking forward to Metroid, The Great Ace Attorney, and Monster Hunter Stories 2 as well. And I'm sure I'll probably get that Danganronpa collection, just because I love the series so much, and it'd be nice to own physically.
BotW2 looks fine, but we didn't get to see much, so it's difficult to have much of an opinion.
I loved the surprises and reveals, but ultimately, it was all about the new Zelda for me. Not a big surprise, it's my favorite game series, and anything new from it would've made best of show for me, but I can't describe how much I'm looking forward to that game.
Truth be told I wasn't exactly as excited for BOTW2 because I was expecting it to show up. Metroid Dread though really caught me by surprise!
Advanced Wars literally gave me goosebumps so yeah, that's worth a vote.
I want Metroid Dread 100 times more than any other game. That said, BOTW2 is a distant second, also looks amazing.
They were all pretty good for me, but oddly enough, the one I keep going back to is Metroid Dread. The game just gets more and more fascinating to me as time goes on, and the reveal was awesome.
Sadly, that doesn't mean I'll be limiting my funds to just that this year. Advance Wars, Wario Ware, Cruis'n Blast, and those are just my immediate thoughts from the Direct. Shout out to Mario Party: Superstars basically confirming that online is going to be a permanent feature for the seres moving on. Super's online was good, but I'm looking forward to seeing the primal rage that the Mario Party of old can bring out of people in a new package XD
Crusin BLAST
Other than most things from the Nintendo Direct - I was pleased to hear Doki Doki Literature Club Plus is coming to Switch very soon! No spoilers please.
I voted Project Zero (Fatal Frame) as SMTV wasn't on the list. Only got a Switch back in 2018 for SMT. Don't really care for most Nintendo franchises lol.
But I would love to see Golden Sun come back!
I'm surprised nobody is excited about Tekken in Smash Brothers. This got me the most excited.
plumbers dont wear ties remastered
I can't pick one. Nintendo, microsoft, Wholesome, Limited Run and Devolver had great shows. I'm just elated at everything that's coming. And if that's just a sample, then God help my wallet.
Of course I am elated Super Monkey Ball was announced but honestly, there is so so much I'm looking forward to. From fending off hordes of robotic aliens or demons to simply taking your Grandmother for a walk (omg, that game was so lovely.)
I was absolutely happy to see Life is Strange coming to Switch. That was the one highlight of E3 for me. And I've heard so much of Doki Doki Club, so I'm very eager to play it in July. Not very excited for the big games announced, but happy for other people that are
Normally, I vote Zelda. But Dread is closer, so that’s what I’m really looking forward to.
Oh yeah, that's right. There were other announcements besides Advance Wars? Honestly forgot about all that minor stuff.
Ecstatic for Metroid Dread- but HAD to pick Advance Wars!
How could you guys not have Shin Megami Tensei V on this list? I get that outside of Japan it's considered niche, but it's a huge foundational series, as big and influential as Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy. It started the collectible monster genre among many other things. SMT V all the way! My favorite of the show followed by Metroid Dread
I agree with Thomas.
Metroid Dread for sure. And even though I didn't LOVE Breath of The Wild, I'm still looking forward to the sequel. Sad the leak that claimed a Wind Waker, Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess Switch reveal was bogus. Saw that one coming from a mile away, but my body craves those games on the go
A non Switch game like Elden Ring is on the poll but not SMT V?
Anyway BotW 2 would be my #1 pick. SMT V, Metroid, M+R, AW1+2, Crusin and Danganronpa were also highlights.
It was a very hard choice between Metroid and Advance Wars! Sure I am a die hard Zelda fan and loved loved BoTW but a update was more of less expected. Between Metroid and Advance Wars it came down to expectations and sheer amount of hours played.
Because of 1-2 combo of leaks and constant speculation of when Prime 4 and the Prime collection would come out made me a little less shocked about the Dread announcement.
When they played that music and had the text about Orange Star, I was shouting No Way No Way No Way! And then it was suddenly very way! I was cheering and shaking my poor 4 year old in excitement.
I Love both Metroid and Advance wars but I have spent so many hours playing and replaying all the advance wars games, making my own makes and playing hot seat with my friends. The series has provided 100s of hours of entertainment to otherwise boring car trips, waits for car repairs or breaks/lunches at work. Metroid's for me are one and dones. Granted that's after finding all the stuff typically but they are not super lengthy games.
That being said I am getting them all!!
Warioware. Hands down. I need it in my life.
BotW2 is seriously most impressive looking, of course, but it’s next year. Metroid Dread was icing on the cake. I literally loved this Direct though. There were few moments to even breathe because it was so good.
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of hope.
I can't see how announcing that BotW is delayed yet again and maybe 18 months away and could be delayed ever longer, since 2022 is not written in stone, is anyone's favourite announcement.
Warioware no contest. I am super excited for Metroid, Zelda, Monkey Ball, an actual good Mario Party... But nothing compares to how excited I am for Warioware.
Finding out there will be additional courses added to Mario Golf for free was my #1. Sealed the deal on the day one purchase.
My favorite of the show was SMT V , finally it’s coming soon and the game looks gorgeous day one buy for me!
I'm a huge fan of some of the "smaller" games and franchises so this E3 Direct was right up my alley. The biggest reveals for me were Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania (I LOVE the two original titles so this is big for me), Mario Party: Superstars (finally... a true return to form... Super Mario Party was basically a stepping stone but this seems like the real deal), and, of course, Metroid Dread (so cool to see that game brought back from the dead).
I am also very excited for the new WarioWare and the remake of Advance Wars. Add on other games like Sonic Colors Ultimate, Pokemon Shining Pearl, Halo Infinite (free multiplayer), and Forza Horizon 5 (huge fan of those games)... this is looking to be a crowded fall/holiday season for me. Super excited!
@Anti-Matter Kitaria Fables looks brilliant, a day one almost for sure, but... it was announced several weeks ago, not during E3 XD, which is the point here.
For me, it's Metroid Dread and then everything else far away.
Well, Zelda would be close second, but it shouldn't be in the list as it wasn't announced during the E3. Yes, they finnally showed some gameplay, but same goes for Shin Megami Tensei V and it's not anywhere...
But it'll still be two days 'til I say I'm sorry?
Like a few others here, Shin Megami Tensei V was my highlight. Sure, it’s not a surprise reveal or anything, but after more than four years of almost nothing, finally seeing it - and it looking good to boot - was wonderful. Metroid Dread, Starfield and Outer Worlds 2 were probably all next on the list.
Definitely Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. After that would be Eiyuden Chronicle.
The best part of E3, for myself, is the knowledge that Nintendo is willing to start giving attention to some neglected series. The future is looking bright.
I'm most looking forward to Metroid Dread. I'm replaying the 2D series in anticipation. It's very exciting for those of us who've been waiting since Fusion for a new 2D entry.
I'm also looking forward to Advance Wars, as I skipped the series during its original release.
Warioware looks like a fun twist on the series. Cruis'n Blast looks like a really good arcade racer. Shin Megami Tensei V is shaping up nicely. Mario Party looks to be the best entry in a long time.
I'm a huge fan of early Super Monkey Ball, so I'm really excited for the remaster.
I'm looking forward to BotW 2, but I won't start getting really excited for it until it's a little closer to release.
All in all, I thought it was a fantastic E3.
@Darknilious personally I (always) predict an Advance Wars reveal at LITERALLY every Nintendo Direct, but I’m always disappointed: NOT THIS TIME! I’m with ya!
I know I'm in the minority here, while I like the concept of Metroid Dread, I don't like the actual look of it in motion. I don't know if it's the animation or the camera, or just the 2.5D approach in general, it looks off to me. Whatever MercurySteam is doing doesn't work for me, but it obviously works for others, so I hope those planning to get it enjoy their time with it.
At least the Zelda Game & Watch seems like a better value than the Mario one considering the games included. And, yes, I know many view it as a collector's piece, but I'm glad Nintendo offered something better, in my opinion. It is a bit frustrating that they don't include the namesake G&W games. Zelda may have been dual screen, but they made it work on GBA. And Super Mario Bros. G&W had only ever been reissued as a keychain game as I understand it. Nintendo never seems to include it in their collections.
What about Mario Party!!
Looking back on it, I actually loved their E3 presence.
Core games:
Shin Megami Tensei 5
Skyward Sword HD
No More Heroes 3
Metroid Dread
Variety/arcade:
Cruis'n Blast
Monkey Ball
Warioware
Visual Novel:
Ace Attorney Chronicles
Danganronpa Decadence
Tactics:
Advance Wars
And then others from around E3:
The Takeover physical from Limited Run. Never heard of the game before their show, it looks awesome.
Metal Slug Tactics. PC only for now and probably quite far away from release, but it'll surely be coming to Switch too.
Das a lotta games.
"Wah-hah-hah-hah-hah!
Did you miss me?
Wah?
What do you mean, who am I?
It's a me!
WARIO!"
Had me jump off my couch and nearly spill my coke
@Demon-Serph I think we were the only two. So sad lol. 😅
