Re: Valve Responds To 'Switch Vs Steam Deck' Comparisons, Insists It's "Going After" A Different Audience

jeffri

Personally, I don't see them as a direct competitor to Switch. The Steam Deck, however, will be disruptive to the niche portable gaming PC from the likes of GPD and similar companies. They are too small to be able to compete with Steam Deck in pricing, especially as they have different business model as well (just selling hardware).

The Steam Deck won't have much appeal in the very young demographic, which the Switch is pretty much the only option. It seems too heavy for children, you don't want to kill their wrist. It doesn't have much appeal for family time either. It's pretty much a portable gaming PC for young adult (which I'm also one and probably get one when I could).

Another thing for this first gen of Steam Deck is that, they still used X86 architecture. We knew ARM chip with better gaming performance is coming soon, Samsung is working with AMD and Mediatek is working with NVIDIA. This is probably still one or two years away, but the next generation of portable gaming PC with ARM should be the future.

Re: Switch Lite Will Be The Only New Nintendo Hardware This Holiday Season

jeffri

Switch Pro doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon... still, if Switch Lite indeed use the new SoC that fix hardware flaw that make Tegra so easy to hack, then a silent SoC refresh to the current Switch might be a reasonable expectation. Something like the same Switch model, but a 2019 refresh with new SoC with nothing else changed. The security fix is important, because of course Nintendo doesn't want more hackable Switch on the wild.

Re: Switch Lite's Battery Life Will Last 3 - 7 Hours, Depending On What You Play

jeffri

Should also mention how Nintendo also list the estimation of battery life playing BotW. It is approximately 3 hours on Switch, and that approximation improved to 4 hours on Switch Lite. This is a realistic scenario they listed and that improvement is around 30%! Hopefully their estimation is correct, because that is quite a significant improvement.

Re: Feature: It's Time To Lay Down Your ARMS

jeffri

Min Min for win win... obviously

The community is definitely small, the scene is quite small too, so there won't be player living solely on competitive ARMS. It already reached the peak on 2018 EVO Japan and Smash n' Splash, then declining ever since. That said, I think what remains, the small community around ARMS, will continue for years to come.

ARMS might never taking a center stage in competition anymore, but people will still arrange a competition on the side. The dedicated community will play it for a long time. Of course that includes me...

And hopefully, a sequel will come, one day.

Re: Phil Spencer Says Microsoft Had No Problem With Banjo-Kazooie Appearing In Smash Bros. Ultimate

jeffri

I have a feeling Xcloud might make an appearance on Switch one way or another. That will be a win for both Microsoft and Nintendo for offering 3rd party AAA games and even Microsoft own game for portable play. Nintendo doesn't have the capability to run streaming server like this, so if they had to offer game streaming, it'll be either Stadia or Xcloud. I'm sure Microsoft won't let Google to take that cake...

Nintendo can get profit by limiting these services behind their online subscription. Although game port might be less compelling for 3rd party if this happens.

Re: Random: Knock-Off Switch Joy-Con Controller Might Not Look Wireless, But It Actually Is

jeffri

It's a wireless controller, not sure how it won't be safe for Switch...? I mean, it shouldn't make any contact with the Switch directly, the joycon rail is probably just a piece of plastic to stay attached. Which is also why they have USB-C port to charge, since it won't charge from being attached to Switch. And also make sense to have a strip on the back which should house a cable connecting both ends, because essentially, this is a single controller split into two sections.

It's misleading to say it is a separate knock-off JoyCons connected by a strip, it is a single controller split into two sections to mimic two JoyCons.

Re: The Genki USB Bluetooth Adapter Finally Brings Low-Latency Audio To Switch

jeffri

Oops, I have been eyeing for this and missed the day one price. At least still get early bird.

Here is my thought why this is important, the 3.5mm jack from Switch simply sucks. They are noisy and not well isolated, a sensitive IEM picked a lot of hiss and the volume is not strong enough for full size headphone. The Bluetooth adapter that attached to 3.5mm will add latency by the ADC process and will also transmit the noise from the 3.5mm port. The USB audio on the other hand is clean from this issue, as it's only getting digital signal from the Switch.

So I think this is a great solution and nicely designed to sit flush with Switch, also the multi pairing option is a nice bonus. I was hoping to see aptX LL more widely adopted as I don't have any receiver that support one, but I don't have much issue with aptX so hopefully it'll be fine. Other than latency, I also worried about how stable the connection will be, Bluetooth 5.0 support is promising though.

Also on the subject of USB audio, the Switch USB audio only support USB Audio Class 1 I think. Finding a DAC that support it is already a challenge, it's a shame that I can't use a more sophisticated DAC like Chord Mojo there, but I found it to be working with Schiit Fulla 2 and recently with Bluewave GET (a Bluetooth receiver but also works wired as DAC), which is more portable. The music in Switch games deserve a much better audio output, so I constantly looking for a solution on this.

Re: This Has To Be The Most Amazing Use Of Nintendo Labo Yet

jeffri

Amazing! I wonder how they hook up the Switch to the wheelchair controller, so it seems to be more complicated than what was seen on the surface.

Personally, I see the ToyCon Garage as the real deal behind the Labo. I hope they will release that separately as eShop download. It'll be really nice to be able to experiment and create stuff with Switch and JoyCons without purchasing the ToyCon set.

Re: ARMS Keeps On Swinging Thanks To A Group Of Dedicated Fans

jeffri

This game needs another review. The game is almost nothing like how it was on release, the roster is up 50% and have a lot more features now. As it seems to be the last major content update, I think it's time for a revisit.

For myself, it's my most played game clocking at 500 hours at least and have been playing competitively (I'm in top 100 in leaderboard). I enjoyed the game a lot and this year, I'm going to start supporting the competitive scene even more, especially in Asia and Australia.
