It's the middle of the week, which means it's time for the Media Create chart results out of Japan. It was a notable week with a couple of new Switch releases, so let's get to it.
Pokkén Tournament DX was the main arrival, and it secured top spot; its 53,395 physical retail sales didn't hit the heights of the original on Wii U, which shifted nearly 70,000 units when it launched. Reasons can include the smaller install base of the Switch (for now, at least) and the fact that not all who bought the original will want to double dip.
Elsewhere a Dragon Quest X 'all in one' release only managed four figures on its Switch debut; in general it was a quiet week in the top 20.
- [NSW] Pokkén Tournament DX (Nintendo, 09/22/17) – 53,395 (New)
- [NSW] Splatoon 2 (Nintendo, 07/21/17) – 21,897 (1,160,859)
- [PS4] Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 (Konami, 09/14/17) – 16,854 (81,196)
- [PS4] NBA 2K18 (Take-Two Interactive, 09/21/17) – 14,487 (New)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04,28,17) – 11,457 (706,642)
- [PS4] Destiny 2 (SIE, 09/06/17) – 11,036 (81,317)
- [NSW] Dragon Quest X: All In One Package (Square Enix, 09/21/17) – 9,482 (New)
- [PS4] Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite (Capcom, 09/21/17) – 8,273 (New)
- [PS4] Everybody’s Golf (SIE, 08/31/17) – 7,738 (144,432)
- [3DS] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 7,482 (1,727,913)
- [PS4] Project Cars 2 (Bandai Namco, 09/21/17) – 7,359 (New)
- [NSW] Monster Hunter XX (Capcom, 08/25/17) – 6,911 (140,533)
- [3DS] Metroid: Samus Returns (Nintendo, 09/15/17) (Limited Edition Included) – 6,206 (37,061)
- [3DS] The Snack World: Trejarers (Level-5, 08/10/17) – 5,952 (167,759)
- [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Limited Edition Included) (Nintendo, 03/03/17) – 5,502 (591,055)
- [PSV] Nil Admirari no Tenbin: Kuroyuri En’youtan (Idea Factory, 09/21/17) – 5,450 (New)
- [PS4] Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (SIE, 09/14/17) – 4,666 (27,797)
- [PS4] Yakuza: Kiwami (New Price Edition) (Sega, 09/21/17) – 4,596 (New)
- [PS4] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 4,104 (1,347,582)
- [PS3] Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 (Konami, 09/14/17) – 4,068 (16,845)
In terms of hardware there were small dips for most systems, though the Switch is still comfortably ahead of the rest, with New 3DS and 2DS LL still sitting behind the PS4.
- Switch – 43,426 (44,052)
- PlayStation 4 – 18,396 (19,322)
- New 3DS LL – 8,726 (10,650)
- New 2DS LL – 8,508 (8,761)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 5,418 (5,338)
- PlayStation Vita – 3,707 (3,847)
- 2DS – 1,659 (1,726)
- New 3DS – 379 (428)
- PlayStation 3 – 87 (99)
- Xbox One – 76 (57)
- Wii U – 56 (86)
A reasonable week for Pokkén Tournament DX and Nintendo in general, albeit the fighting title didn't set the charts alight.

Wow MVCI though wonder what capcom is feeling about that less than 10k.
Xbox isn't last for once !
I am hoping that Pokken gets a new life on the Switch. Waiting on my copy to arrive. Ouch MvC:I.
I'll double-dip for Pokken Tournament DX, since I always played the original on Wii U.
Now this chart doesn't answer my number one question for the week. Did the XB1 version of MvC:I manage to shift a single copy in Japan?
So MVC is as much a dud in Japan as the UK, where Street Fighter on SW did better first week sales in both territories--NA is now Capcom's only hope.
I think Switch has found its level in Japan. For now at least. Nothing stellar about those Pokken Tournament sales, but then a port of a year old Wii U game doesn't deserve to be rewarded.
I'm glad. I picked Pokken up and I am surprised at how good it is! Really hope the Switch becomes a beacon for beat-em-ups like the same way it is attracting shmups. Dreamconsole!
I've been loving every moment, love me some Pokken. Being able to carry it with me and play at work is a huge bonus.
Was DQX All in One released on PS4 prior to this?
Meh. Not into many fighters. I like Smash quite a bit, but it's the exception to the rule.
I'd probably like them more if I was better at them, but oh well. I'll just stick to kickboxing IRL I guess, lol.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I believe it's Nintendo who has found its level of ability to produce systems, not Japans level of demand.
That's good numbers for Pokken DX. terrible Marvel vs Capcom numbers.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE if thats what you mean by level, that is.
No one is rewarding Capcom either it seems.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE If you can only produce 10 units of your product, and 100 people want to buy them, and thus you can sell only 10 units, is that the "level" of your product? I think that's the level of your ability to produce your product.
That or a lot are preparing for this week's SNES Mini/Super Famicom Mini search and purchase. Insert SNES Bowser Airship Theme Here
@RoomB31 True, but I think Marvel's "No series of ours that Fox has the movie rights to" stance is mostly to blame. Not much Capcom could do about that though the presentation of said game could have been better regardless. Still, I heard its fun to play at least once you're done with the story mode....
I'll help that dragon quest x number for a western localization.
ARMS finally gone from the chart, it has a quite good run though. Good Switch number and Pokken start just fine I think for a Wii U port.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Most people didn't own a WiiU, might as well port some of the cooler titles over. A good game is a good game, no matter where it might come from.
As for sales levels of the system itself, as several others have said, I think what we are seeing is Nintendo's ability to produce more systems rather than Japan's demand.
I'm finding it amusing how even as just a port, Pokken continues to mob the floor with some of Capcom's latest (though not so greatest) fighters.
@Angelic_Lapras_King I haven't been into fighting games since Killer Instinct on the SNES (one of my fav SNES games), I've played the Pokken demo and loved it, but I don't see much immersion with the genre. I don't think I've ever played a MvC game, but this doesn't seem like the one to start with. I'd love to get back into the genre, and I hear that Injustice 2 does a great job at story etc.. but the characters don't draw me ( not a DC guy).
@RoomB31 The MVC series can be an enjoyable series, but unless you're like REALLY good at fighters, don't ever play them online. 95% of the time, you'll get your ass kicked by some insane combo you can't get out of. I'd say try MVC 2 or Ultimate 3 to see if you enjoy it, but I'm not great at fighters either so I might not be the best guy to ask, but I can still enjoy the games in some way.
I think those are pretty great numbers for Pokken. Capcom... ouch. What are you doing? MvC:I was expected to shift 2m copies.
Goood sales number for Pokken considering it's a rerelease and I'm sure was inexpensive to port. Just straight profit for Nintendo.
Thing is, there is a legion of support on Switch for Capcom's hits. Heck, I'd be happy with Marvel Vs Capcom 2 or maybe Ultimate 3 as opposed to Infinite. Just...something...anything!
As a fan and owner of Pokken I'm still pretty surprised it sold so well, as a port of a Wii U game and after support for the Wii U version dried up because the Wii U was already 2 feet and an arm in the grave when Pokken was released.
If only Dragon Quest X would come to the west. There is the rare example of an MMO I'd play.
Wow Pokken DX outperformed MVCI. Jesus Capcom must not be happy about that.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Switch is selling al it's available stock in Japan - This means that about 44k consoles are arriving per week into Japan from the factory . This will change next month as Pre-orders on the Japanese Official My Nintendo store started on August 22nd for Delivery from October 1st - AS long as Nintendo can contribute it's own Sales figures to MediaCreate - we should see a big jump in sales figures every week as the only limitation here is peoples' acceptance of waiting 5 weeks to pre-order a console.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Don't you EVER Underestimate Port games.
Just look at Pokken Tournament DX sales first week.
Pokken DX >>>>>> MvCl
Guess What ? A lot of Japanese gamer were tired with Unimpressive MvCl for some reasons.
@KirbyTheVampire
Kickboxing IRL ?
Is that a game ?
@Anti-Matter No, I mean kickboxing in real life, lol.
@KirbyTheVampire
Aah.....
I thought it was a new game.
Metroid is still on the list, that seems like a good thing.
@BLP_Software Yeah, DQX on PS4 was released August 17th, so it's had a month's head start.
@Steelhead It would also be the perfect opportunity for Nintendo to get into the MMO scene. They don't really have a high-profile MMORPG for the Switch which this would cover nicely, and Dragon Quest is traditionally connected to Nintendo. I know I'd buy it!
Pokken tournament numbers are kinda of a letdown. Still Tekken 7 only sold like 90k in japan, so its not that bad.
Square Enix should release Dragon Quest iX on Switch already! I remember how excited we were all about Dragon Quest X exclusively on Wii until we found out it was a MMORPG
Not bad for an updated port rather than a new game.
Also, hey Microsoft! Good job! This week the Xbone finally sold more units in Japan... Than the Wii U! (Sorry, I can't resist the jab at Microsoft)
USF2 on Switch launched with nearly double the launch sales of MvC Infinite.
I guess Capcom will now begin releasing "test" games for PS4/XBO, armite??
Anyway, decent Pokken numbers and good but still supply-constrained Switch sales.
MK8D has now sold over 700,000 copies, and will almost certainly be a million+ seller by the end of the year.
That's all, folks.
meh - I knew PTDX would be a fail... more full price rehash like MHXX. Ouch, Square also crashed and burn hard on Switch.
September Switch line up was horrid - make up for it in Oct and December.
That's what you get Crapcom for backstabbing your fans and licking Sony's balls. Nobody wants that piece of Marvel vs. Crapcom Infinite so bad it also didn't have Japanese voice-over trash anymore. You're lucky that 8K of those suckers even pay for that garbage. Also I'm sure Pokken Tournament DX would get a bigger sale later on if everyone decided to get rid of their Wii U version which they can't take it with them.
@BLP_Software Yes, but the PS4 version requires you to start over. Nothing carries over from the other versions.
@Agramonte Owners of the Wii version (which is likely the majority of it's playerbase) of DQX apparently got the Switch version for free, so selling another 9k is actually pretty decent.
Also I strongly disagree with you about September's lineup. I think it's been great!
Poor Metroid
@IceClimbers nop. it was a bunch old rehashed games at crazy prices and a bunch of retro nonsense. Only way that is a good month is if you have nothing else to play on - better choices elsewhere.
