It's the middle of the week, which means we have the Media Create chart results out of Japan; there are some interesting points to consider in what was clearly a relatively quiet week in the market.
Starting with software we have Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions making its debut at number one. That's a positive, but its sales of 25,788 units are undeniably modest; for comparison Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam shifted nearly double that number when it launched in late 2015. That's it for new Nintendo system games in the top 20, though in a quiet week we do have Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe ticking along nicely in 2nd and 3rd.
- [3DS] Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions (Nintendo, 10/05/17) – 25,788 (New)
- [NSW] Splatoon 2 (Nintendo, 07/21/17) – 22,338 (1,212,901)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04,28,17) – 13,392 (734,133)
- [PS4] FIFA 18 (Electronic Arts, 09/29/17) – 13,169 (69,088)
- [PS4] The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III (Limited Edition Included) (Falcom, 09/28/17) – 12,581 (99,841)
- [NSW] Pokken Tournament DX (Nintendo, 09/22/17) – 11,831 (88,768)
- [PS4] Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen (Capcom, 10/05/17) – 11,666 (New)
- [PS4] Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 (Ubisoft, 10/05/17) – 10,825 (New)
- [NSW] Fire Emblem Warriors (Nintendo, 09/28/17) – 8,024 (49,514)
- [PS4] Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 (Konami, 09/14/17) – 6,266 (97,712)
- [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Limited Edition Included) (Nintendo, 03/03/17) – 6,196 (604,865)
- [PSV] Tokyo Clanpool (Limited Edition Included) (Compile Heart, 10/05/17) – 5,197 (New)
- [3DS] Fire Emblem Warriors (Nintendo, 09/28/17) – 4,952 (23,309)
- [NSW] Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver. (Capcom, 08/25/17) – 4,785 (151,668)
- [NSW] FIFA 18 (Electronic Arts, 09/29/17) – 4,660 (17,276)
- [3DS] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 4,370 (1,737,922)
- [NSW] Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch (Bandai Namco, 09/07/17) – 4,339 (40,424)
- [3DS] The Snack World: Trejarers (Level-5, 08/10/17) – 4,126 (176,959)
- [NSW] Arms (Nintendo, 06/16/17) – 3,340 (232,688)
- [PS4] Destiny 2 (SIE, 09/06/17) – 3,205 (91,893)
Moving on to hardware numbers are down for the top two, with Switch losing nearly half its sales from the previous week but still coming out well on top. The New 3DS LL and New 2DS LL (XL) both saw increases, however. Results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- Switch – 38,204 (73,231)
- PlayStation 4 – 16,680 (22,822)
- New 3DS LL – 12,658 (9,915)
- New 2DS LL – 8,534 (8,359)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 5,869 (6,547)
- PlayStation Vita – 3,545 (3,732)
- 2DS – 1,594 (1,655)
- New 3DS – 265 (392)
- Xbox One – 186 (71)
- PlayStation 3 – 72 (64)
- Wii U – 45 (68)
A reasonable week for Nintendo, though the sales of Superstar Saga's re-release are a little disappointing; it likely reflects a mix of its remake status and declining interest in 3DS titles. As for the Switch, it's still comfortably leading the way in hardware; here's hoping Nintendo gets plenty of units in stock as the shopping season heats up.

Would have bought M+L on Switch. No thanks on 3DS. Splatoon 2 is on fire in Japan.
I didn't expect first for Mario Luigi, but guess it was a slower week. Still havent got it myself but since I've bought every single Mario Luigi its gonna be soon. Dream Team is actually my favorite (while Paper Jam was an abomination)
Everyone is gearing up for Mario in a couple weeks.
Sidenote: just got back from Gamestop with my SNES Classic. Awww yeahhhh.
Fairly hefty drop-off in Switch sales but then nothing big or new came out. The calm before the storm. FIFA 18 on the Switch will probably be gone from the charts next week.
Edit: Oh ya, I forgot I posted this in the forums. Another reason for the drop in sales could be down to this little thing. Japan only got it last week.

The Super Famicom Classic Mini was the real winner in Japan last week. I know it's not on a like for like basis, but it sold over triple of all the other hardware combined in Japan for the week.
Holey-moley that XBox increase!
It's good to see ARMS back in the top 20. That game sure has legs... (sorry)
Why don't they combine all 3ds systems into one amount? Same with PS4?
Mario kart outselling FIFA?
I wonder why they even bother including PS3 and Wii U Sales, they're irrelevant now. None of their games are ever going to enter the chart again and their hardware sales are just going to continue to decline. The Xbox One I can understand why they include it despite its pathetic numbers as it's current gen but the others are yesterday news. Is there a cut off point where they will stop including them, like single figure sales?
9 of the top 20 games are Switch titles. Considering the relatively small install base I think that's pretty good. Is Japan getting FE:W next week and Mario in 2 weeks like the rest of us? Both of those should be Top 20 for awhile easy, could give Switch half or more of the list.
Hmm I wonder what is causing the spike in xbone sales.
@rjejr Japan already has FE:Warriors. Mario is worldwide though.
[NSW] Fire Emblem Warriors (Nintendo, 09/28/17) – 8,024 (49,514)
[3DS] Fire Emblem Warriors (Nintendo, 09/28/17) – 4,952 (23,309)
For the second time in a row Xbox One is beating PlayStation 3 and Wii U. This calls for a celebration, c'mon Microsoft a new Blue Dragon game needs to happen.
Nintendo dominations! Also ARMS is back! Happy to see it still selling consistently, although at a lower rate than the monstrous Splatoon 2 and MK8.
@Ryu_Niiyama "Hmm I wonder what is causing the spike in xbone sales."
A sudden influx of Americans in Japan?
@justin233
Yeah I agree. They need to start putting their big 3DS games on both. I can see them wanting to keep supporting 3DS but some people use their Switch as their portable device. I sold my 2DS and all of my games when I got my Switch since I figured I would be using it as both home console and my handheld of choice.
Oy... another fail for Nintendo on the 3DS. Came in at #19 in the UK.
@WiltonRoots And they bought xbones? I thought Ps4 was king in America as well... (I buy everything so I don't pay attention but I don't even know anybody else with a xbone ...obviously somebody is buying them but I've not met them.
I just figured some exclusive eroge came out on xbone or something. lmao.
Not surprised with M&L’s performance; the gaming public knows how the Mario RPGs have been going downhill lately.
Wish FE warriors was doing better. It’s shaping up to be a pretty good game. Looks like the representation choices is going to hurt it
@firstnesfan also outselling Zelda in every way.
@rdrunner1178 Yep! I've only ever played the Switch as a handheld.
That FE Warriors drop though. It dropped by over 80%. Ouch. Hope that's because of the game itself and not oversaturation of Fire Emblem titles.
Mario & Luigi had a disappointing debut. I get the feeling that the active userbase on 3DS has dwindled significantly. Most have moved on, and not necessarily on to Switch yet either. I imagine a lot got Gold/Silver and now are just waiting for Ultra Sun/Moon and are done with the system otherwise.
Nice.
What is the frame rate of the Mario and Luigi remake on 3ds? If they took away 3d(from the Mario and Luigi 3ds engine used on dream team) without maintaining the 60 fps of the gameboy advance original, then there's no way I'd consider buying it.
Pretty modest week for the Switch after last week's big boost.
Zelda BOTW has now sold over 600,000 copies on the Switch alone.
Another first party title with poor opening sales on the 3DS. I know Nintendo used to get crap about abandoning old systems immediately after releasing new hardware, but this really seems to illustrate that people would rather wait for good games on the Switch than buy a game for a system they already own. It's kinda bizarre when you think about it...
Wii-U basically dead 45 sales ! Yikes !
Not the greatest week for hardware and software, Splatoon has great legs though, i don't think fifa switch has any legs, looks like it's dragging it's ass along the floor, very poor sales, also it dropped massively in the latest UK charts from 7th to 17. Well at least mario is coming to pick up the pieces
Wow...
It's pretty crazy the sales of splatoon 2 in Japan. It's sold twice as much as BotW and more than 5 times as much as arms, despite arms being released first. Also ouch on those Mario & Luigi sales. I'm personally excited to get it after gow mediocre and souless Paper Jam looked
I wonder how Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon is going to sell now the Switch has been released. Seems not so many people are bothered with 3DS lately. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
And yeah...those Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga sales pretty mediocre.
From a global perspective, Mario + Rabbids will be the best selling Mario RPG spinoff since Mario & Luigi Dream Team. Let that sink in...
@justin233 Same. Though I understand it was probably already in development for the 3DS when they began it.
Basically at this point I have to really dedicated to a game series to buy a 3DS title. Pokemon US/UM will probably be the last new 3DS game I get for a long while. I am spoiled by the much much nicer Nintendo Switch. I spend almost all my time gaming, playing the Switch now.
Also kind of burned out on 3DS, because I obsessed over it for almost it's entire lifespan. I used to carry it around everywhere, even at work... Now it just stays in my backpack.
@QwertyQwerty Not anytime soon: look at sales of Dragon Quest Xi (almost 2MM).
@Ryu_Niiyama "Japan already has FE:Warriors"
Oh thanks, obviously I confused it with Mario + Rabbids which Japan doesn't get until next year. No wait, next year isn't next week so there goes that excuse.
Actually I knew Japan got FE:W Sept 27 b/c I wrote about it a week ago. I must have forgot.
"As for FE:Warriors releasing only a week before SMO, well it did release in Japan Sept 28, so I'll go w/ that was supposed to be worldwide but something delayed it in the West. Sept 28th would have put it squarely between Mario & Rabbids Aug 29 and Mario Oct 27 - 8/29, 9/28, 10/27. Of course M&R doesn't release in Japan until 2018, so that doesn't work for Japan, but I'm still going w/ it. Even if FE:W got delayed they weren't going to delay Mario into 3DS month of Nov."
Thanks for the correction.
@rjejr np. It is hard to keep track of all of these separate releases sometimes.
