Nintendo has been doing a fantastic job of keeping ARMS updated with new stages, characters, and ARMS, and that support has been continuing nearly nonstop up until now. The company has been teasing version 5.0, which would be adding in a new character, for a few days now, and the update only just went live. As expected, it adds quite a large amount of new content.
The headlining feature of this one is a new fighter named Dr. Coyle, who can be encountered when playing through Grand Prix on LV6 or higher. Alongside the doctor, a new stage and some new arms have been added, along with some new badges and a handful of other tweaks.
Here’s the full list of patch notes:
· New fighter “Dr. Coyle” is now available. Play the Grand Prix at LV6 or higher as someone other than Dr. Coyle and see what happens…
· New ARM “Lokjaw” added.
· New ARM “Parabola” added.
· New ARM “Brrchuk” added.
· New stage [NAME REDACTED] added.
· For Grand Prix LV6 and lower, the computer will now get stronger as you get deeper into the Grand Prix.
· For Grand Prix LV7, the computer will start out strong right from the first match, as usual.
· You can now view stats from previous Party Crash events in “Stats.”
· Added new badges related to Dr. Coyle.
· Fixed issue in online play where the healing area created by HP Juice would sometimes shift position.
· Adjusted abilities of some fighters and ARMS as follows.

Dr. Samus confirmed !
Nice touch how her hair is lightning shaped like her logo.
Intriguing, I'll be checking this out later tonight.
In addition to the new toys, I'm glad they've changed the way Grand Prix works. It's always felt a little off that I can get stuck for days in the third or fourth bout of a GP and then sail through all the bouts afterwards. It should get harder as you go.
You didn't post the trailer.

Edit: I see it's been patched in afterwards. Notice that she's wearing kind of like high healed football boots or cleats as you silly Americans like to call them.
Now that we have a villain. We need some story dlc.
@MsJubilee Agree. The characters are definitely mobile enough to platform and beat a buttload of low health minions.
This game does not need a story in my opinion. Just like smash Bros doesn’t need a story. It’s all about online fun. I would like to see more stats and maybe seasons with divisions, rankings etc. Even themed events with special skins rewards like overwatch. However, I still love it as is and feel it is so overlooked. For me it’s one of the switch’s best so far.
Best new character so far!
@Barton-Ink Maybe not story per se, but some some cut-scenes wouldn't hurt. Like how Waverace 64 didn't need a story, but the (really small) variations in the ending cut-scene gave you some more reason to try and beat higher difficulties.
This was one of my issues with Arms near launch, I found any level greater than 2 to be kinda frustrating, and there wasn't much reason to beat a higher level other than bragging rights, so I never even tried it. To my knowledge there was no difference other than getting more coins. It seems with this new character there is some incentive to try higher levels, at least I'm intrigued now where I previously was not at all.
This world is begging for a narrative of some kind. The roster just keeps getting better and better. I really like Dr. Coyle’s abilities and default arms and it’s super cool that she’s the person behind Helix, Springtron and even Hedlok.
wait... is [NAME REDACTED] the actual name of the stage?? or has it been redacted?
Reminds me that Overwatch had an evil doctor at their latest character too.
Great update, but sadly this looks like the last major update outside of balance tweaks:(
@lookmanohands What makes you say that? There are code names for ten additional characters beyond the original roster and we’ve only received five of them.
For Grand Prix LV6 and lower, the computer will now get stronger as you get deeper into the Grand Prix
Oh, you mean the unforgiving, punishing game which I can't even beat on Level 3 is going to get even harder?
Great. Cause that's what this game needed... more difficulty.
@thesilverbrick I can''t say for sure, but a Google translate posted of this https://topics.nintendo.co.jp/c/article/67b3f436-e451-11e7-8cda-063b7ac45a6d.html says, "As a big update, this time will be the last update. Of course, I will continue to adjust the game balance in the future, so I hope you will continue to enjoy "ARMS"
Cool new character, and my main got buffed. Sweet!
@lookmanohands Well if that’s true it’d be quite disappointing. There are five unused code names, and some of them seemed pretty promising.
Really cool that they are still supporting the game like this. How healthy is the community?
Looks like she is followings the trend, just like Laura and Sombra
@JaxonH good grief, I agree totally. This is pretty lame. I can't get past level 4. They should let us casuals play him too.
Zero Suit Dr Coyle.
@Untempered-Link
I am really intrigued by this too! Maybe @SwitchVogel can clarify this. Mysterious!
EDIT: Just had a quick Google... apparently, that really IS the name of the stage!
@thesilverbrick I'll be disappointed, too, but it does seem plausible. There were three more slots open in the ARMS screen, and now they're full. Storywise, too, Dr. Coyle is the inventor of Hedlok, Helix and Springtron, and she's Max Brass' ex (I think?) so she does make an apt final "boss". I expected more, but wouldn't be too surprised if this is it for now. Sad, but not surprised.
@rockodoodle Casuals can totally play ARMS, though. The single-player is not the main event here, local multiplayer is where it shines. I can't get past level 4, either, but I still love the game. I play it with my daughter all the time.
ARMS is maybe the hardest game Nintendo had ever made with a brutal learning curve.
That said, once you get over that hump it is so much fun!
Playing coop is a lot of fun, even at lower difficulty levels, and the events have been fantastic.
There were times I got really frustrated by this game, but I've loved Nintendo's support, and I'm glad I stuck with it.
Great, great game that is very underappreciated!!!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Cleats is a lot easier to say than "high heeled football boots."
You can just feel the edge from this character.
It's cool that there's more stages, arms, and characters being added but I'd prefer a few more game modes tbh
@Ooyah I think this is the name of the stage! Unless the patch notes are keeping the secret, too.
Played a few rounds as Dr Coyle. Moves similar to Twintelle, but not quite as floaty. Good fighter, very well animated.
i like coyle very much! the previously added characters were kind of a mixed bag: lola is quite nice, while misango looks like an early concept – imo he does not fit into the rest of the arms design at all.
my regulars now include twintelle, lola, kid cobra and coyle.
Appears to be the final update for the game as well.
tbh i would gladly pay for an additional dlc, should nintendo ever decide to release it.
really love this game, since it is a real challenge to master. every gamer with a switch and a soft spot for fighting games should own this!
I enjoyed her play style... she's pretty fun. Also the Lokjaw arm is pretty good too.
@SwitchVogel
It appears to be! Apparently because the Dr. is all secret and mysterious and everything.
@thesilverbrick @JasmineDragon @Oat "Finally, the head of the mystery-shrouded ARMS Lab has entered the battle in Ver 5.0. As major updates go, this is due to be the final addition. Of course, adjustments to the game's balance will continue hereafter, so we hope you continue to enjoy ARMS with its now bustling array of added fighters."

@Grawlog We can only hope!
@thesilverbrick it would be nice if they just did some animated shorts like overwatch did...that would work. I don’t see it happening though. In fairness, they have already supported this game very well since launch. Personally one of my favorites on the switch.
An evil female inventor with a rollergirl motif.
Bravo Nintendo.
The Doctor looks cool. I'll try her but I think Min Min shall remain my number one.
@Ryu_Niiyama Ribbon Girl is Best Girl!
@JaxonH .....beat it numerous times on Lv10.......just saying..... Ribbon Girl, Min Min, and Ninjara. I don't think I followed through with Cobra.
@Masurao
I did read that. Read the whole gosh dang thing.
What it sounds like to me is the higher level difficulties are staying the same but they want to make the lower level difficulties harder because they think it's too easy.
That's what I'm taking away from this... reading the entire thing (who reads half a line and stops anyways, why would you even think I would have not read the whole thing).
@NEStalgia Min Min for the Win Win, and Twintelle is my Belle!
@Ryu_Niiyama Does Min Min sing the catchy main menu theme? Does Twintelle sing the end credits? What's this? NO?! No they do not?! Well, ok then.
Ribbon Girl is best girl.
@JaxonH I had a ton of trouble with it until I looked up strategies for it, it really helps! I can usually beat it pretty easily with Ribbon Girl since she can bounce multiple time and is hard to hit. I also take the slapamanders since they do extra damage when charged and the computer doesn’t really seem good at blocking them, since they come in at different angles.
@SimplyCinnamon53
I really do love the game, I'm just horrible at it. Which is odd because I'm usually above average at games. A beast at Monster Hunter and top 10 in the world time trial runs at one point in DKC Tropical Freeze. But ARMS? Idk what it is... It's just difficult as heck for me.
I wonder if they will pull a Mario Kart 8 and release more for a solid price?
Either way, stoked with this update, and will continue to love this game
Can't wait to play ARMS again! A purchase I'll never regret! Sonic Forces on the other hand...
@JaxonH How are you at Splatoon out of curiosity? DKC is a whole different thing, as it's more map memorization and patterning (more like racing) versus branching path decision making and countering the way fighting games and Splatoon work (Splatoon has more fighting game in it's core than it does western shooter, really....)
MH though....that should be fighting game like, so IDK.
@Maxz Huh I didnt know that. Slightly disappointing but understandable I guess. Thanks for letting me know about that
@NEStalgia Min Min is a walking bowl of ramen...which is divinity in a bowl and Twintelle is a movie star. Pop stars usually fade in a few years. Both have the Lady of Ribbon beat.
@Ryu_Niiyama classic double jump tho..... Can't beat classic movesets....
You got me on walking ramen though.... I've got nothing...
