Re: "One Of The Slowest Modern LCDs I've Ever Seen" - Digital Foundry's John Linneman On Switch 2's Display

cra1g0s

I’ve got a theory about Nintendo consoles, it’s almost like Nintendo purposefully make a decision to hamper their consoles just a little bit so they have an aspect to them, a hindrance that keeps them perceived as a bit of an underdog, that always punches above its weight with the games being the showcase, not the hardware.

It’s almost like the story of ‘The Little Engine That Could’ (or should that be Little Mac!) in that it ties one hand behind its back in one sense but this aspect makes the console not only endearing but just that little bit amazing, the surprise aspect of ‘how can this be?!’ that even sites like DF eventually come round to appreciating, which results in its ability to outsell and outperform (in a sense) the more powerful consoles.

Re: How Do Nintendo Switch 2 Virtual Game Cards Work? - Game Transfer & Lending Guide

cra1g0s

So although the update is pretty cool and I appreciate seeing a list of the digital games I own, I have two Switch consoles, one in the lounge and one in the office. The issue I now have is that I can only play a game on one console at a time, before this wasn’t the case. I could decide to play a game where I wanted if I had the game downloaded under my profile on both consoles, but now I have to eject it from one console to play on the other. I know it’s just an extra step and I can’t play the same game on two consoles at the same time anyway (because there’s only one of me) but it’s a bit of a pain, so I’ve just changed that licensing option under the User menu to ‘Yes’ and it works exactly as it did before, I don’t have to eject, I can just play the game wherever without being prompted so that’s good.

Re: Switch 2 Games Cost A Bit More Than You're Probably Expecting

cra1g0s

I was a late adopter for the Switch, I still have my Wii U and 3DS libraries, so when I did finally make the move I did so with gusto, building a nice library of physical and digital games. I had intended to sit the Switch console out, considering it was mostly ports of Wii U games, but then things got a lot better with some great original games and NSO, which drastically improved.

So here we are, a shiny new console with a hefty price tag for the machine, the games and the accessories (how much for a Pro Controller and memory card?!?) and I look at all this with wonder, and really, I just don't need this. Yes, it's backward compatible but to pay probably a good amount for these upgraded games, and these nice new features and tech, it's cool but right now with everything so expensive, no thank you very much.

I've got enough games to keep me going, so will watch on for the next few years and join you all in 2028.

Re: Nintendo Announces 'Virtual Game Cards' For Switch, Unlocking Digital Lending

cra1g0s

I’m confused sorry, here’s my situation. I have two Switch consoles, one in the lounge, one in my office. I’ve purchased digital titles and some of these are downloaded on both Switch consoles under my profile, so I can choose to play them in the lounge or in my office.

Will this update still allow me to play the digital games I’ve bought under my profile on two consoles? I appreciate the sharing of a game with members of my family group, I can this being useful, but I like to be able to play the same game under my profile on two different Switch consoles if I wanted to, will I still be able to do that?

Re: PSA: Nintendo Reminds Us It's Winding Down Gold Points Next Week

cra1g0s

When the Wii U and 3DS were struggling they had incentive programmes, with the Switch it helped establish digital purchasing for Nintendo. Unless they replace the scheme with something else, I can only see this having a detrimental effect on digital purchases, so the 5% they’ll gain in income may mean they or more importantly indie developers lose out.

Re: PSA: Nintendo Reminds Us It's Winding Down Gold Points Next Week

cra1g0s

It’s a bit disappointing Nintendo doing this, the Switch was not a guaranteed success, and having these gold points was an incentive to buy digital and will sometimes have meant that you’d be more likely to buy an indie game that you maybe wouldn’t normally try.

It just helped a little bit, so this week I was able to buy a couple of game codes from CDKeys, that netted me some gold coins that I then used to put towards Lil' Guardsman, and I’m glad I did because it’s great.

Re: Poll: Are You Bothered By The Frame Rate In Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom?

cra1g0s

I still have Link's Awakening and Echoes in my backlog, but in a sense, I'm so looking forward to playing a 2D Zelda again, together with slowdown / frame rate issues because I grew up in the 70s and 80s, where this type of thing was the norm and it just felt part of the game. It will not break the game for me, it'll just be a part of the charm.

Re: 65 Switch Games You Should Pick Up In Nintendo's Blockbuster Sale (Europe)

cra1g0s

@Alex79uk The Jeff Minter collection for me, would bring back a lot of memories, not just of games like Revenge of the Mutant Camels and others, but that whole era of PET computers, followed by the Vic-20 and C64...yeah, I'm that old!

I'm going to think about Pentiment, I like to have games that are a bit unique and this certainly appears to be.

Re: 65 Switch Games You Should Pick Up In Nintendo's Blockbuster Sale (Europe)

cra1g0s

I was hoping for a better sale, not many of my wish list have a discount, so then my interest is piqued for the following:

1. Pentiment
2. Tails of Iron
3. The Stanley Parable

1 & 2 would make a nice medieval double header, whereas 3 has a bit of a Half Life vibe (it being based on a mod).

Decisions, decisions....I was going to buy the Jeff Minter collection, but that might need to wait, so which should I buy from the above or are there any other unmissables?

Re: Video: Where Does Mario Kart Go From Here?

cra1g0s

I miss the difficulty of negotiating the tight and unforgiving tracks of SNES Super Mario Kart, with every release since then having bigger, more visually impressive and grandiose environments at the expense of real racing, or that's how it feels to me.

I did miss out on Double Dash, as I thought it was a gimmick, but played it once and enjoyed it. The other versions have never gripped me in the same way as the original - I even prefer the GBA version over more recent releases.

Re: Talking Point: If 'Switch 2' Is Backwards Compatible, What Will You Do With Your Switch?

cra1g0s

I’ve kept all my Nintendo consoles from the SNES to the Wii U, which all still work perfectly and I’ll be keeping my Switch OLED too.

There’s something about Nintendo hardware that is timeless, so why trade these amazing machines for a few pennies?

My PS4 now refuses to turn on and my PS3 keeps overheating if kept on overnight and will soon succumb to the YLOD. Sony consoles are two a penny in CEX, the games are throwaway really, whereas Nintendo games and consoles are gaming history.

Re: Talking Point: Would You Buy A Digital-Only 'Switch 2'?

cra1g0s

I do like the eShop sales but first party Nintendo titles are rarely if ever included, whereas there is always a chance that physical games can be picked up at a reduced price later down the line. Why then would I buy a digital only console, and miss out on decent sales at online retailers? No thanks, so as Deborah Meaden, would say, “I’m sorry, but I’m out..!”

Re: Video: EA Sports FC 24 Graphics Comparison Shows Off Switch Performance & Resolution

cra1g0s

I imagine if you showed how different Doom Eternal was running on the PS5 and Switch, it would be obvious too, but think about just being able to play the same games on what is essentially a portable console (although I play docked 100%) and then think about having to take your hulking PS5 on the bus and how it might be a bit problematic, there’s lies the difference.

Re: Soapbox: If Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Isn’t Switch’s Swan Song, It Really Should Be

cra1g0s

Why is it stated that the Wii U version of BOTW id a ‘lesser’ version, when it’s the same game and has all the available DLC? It’s the version I play, and maybe it would have been the ‘ultimate’ version if Nintendo had implemented the map on the game pad as we thought they were going to.

I have a Switch with TOTK, but is there any point (except for my game library being up to date) in getting the Switch release of BOTW too?

Re: PSA: Want To Play Hollow Knight Before Silksong? It's 50% Off On Switch eShop Right Now

cra1g0s

Okay, my backlog is epic, but one day, I'll get to play these games...anyway, questions:

1. I have Hollow Knight on my PS5 so worth a double-dip on Switch? I've resisted so far when I already have the game on a different platform
2. Dead Cells, performance issues on Switch? I can buy the game on sale on PSN so will likely hold off
3. The Messenger - I love the look of this one and it's a game that I hadn't heard of until recently. I already have Celeste (PS5), Shovel Knight (Wii U & 3DS) so this was going to be my next Switch purchase as it's on sale
4. Signalis looks pretty cool but must resist

Thoughts anyone?

Re: New Advance Wars Switch Overview Trailer Introduces The Basics Of Battle

cra1g0s

I was on the fence about getting this as I already have the originals and eShop downloads for the Wii U, but I’m more than happy to play through these missions again when in addition there is also the ability to play against someone else locally or online. Being able to create your own maps is a great addition too, so its replay value is there.

I managed to pre-order the game close to £30 so it’s well worth it in my book and being on the Switch with the clean graphical style, I’m looking forward to introducing my son to this.

Re: Poll: Will You Be Getting The New Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Switch OLED?

cra1g0s

I have a pre-order in for the Zelda Pro Controller, but I will likely cancel as I think £65 is too much to spend when you can get the original for £50. I've recently bought a £40 N64 controller too, which has swayed me and that does offer something very different and is so tied to how N64 games can be played.

If Nintendo had included some other incentive like a redeemable code for any other Zelda game available on Switch then that would have shown some generosity for what is likely to be the last special edition before Nintendo announce new hardware, but it's a business ultimately and this feels a bit like a cash-in. Why give away something for free when the Switch continues to sell like hot cakes - it's not like the Wii U or 3DS where they had promotional offers to help sell the system.

Re: Best Deals And Cheapest Games In The 3DS & Wii U eShop Sales

cra1g0s

The following games aren't generally on these 'best of the 3DS eShop games to buy before the store closes for good' lists, but I looked at them and decided they were unique experiences on the 3DS that perhaps shouldn't be missed - also helps with TT that we have four 3DS & 2DS iterations so local multi-player is a good time:

1. Tank Troopers
2. SpeedThru: Potzol's Puzzle
3. Splash or Crash

Re: When Does The 3DS And Wii U eShop Close? Nintendo eShop Closure Guide

cra1g0s

@jco83 You can today and in the future so we're told, but those Xenoblade and Ghosts updates are 'add-on' software so I'd download these as a priority, but I'm a safety first kind of guy, so will be inserting each Wii U disc and starting the game to ensure everything is up to date.

Why am I doing this, I'm not sure

Re: When Does The 3DS And Wii U eShop Close? Nintendo eShop Closure Guide

cra1g0s

I'm currently inserting the game disc into my Wii U and starting the software to initiate any game downloads, as it seems to be the only way of making sure game updates are installed. Then, there is Xenoblade X, which has it's own add-on content accessible through the eShop, so I'm assuming this type of game update accessible via the eShop user interface, unlike normal game updates will be no longer available.

For safety though, I'm inserting each game disc - I think Call of Duty Ghosts has some additional content too that enables the game to be played online, folks better grab this as well.
