Re: Talking Point: Does Nintendo's Next Console Have To Be 'Another' Switch?

cra1g0s

Nintendo dropped out of the power race years ago so I can’t see anything they do next is going to compete with the PS5 or XBox in those terms. They’ve carved out their own niche by combining their game development into one hybrid system offering the best of both worlds after years of their game offerings being split across two platforms. This is exactly the ground that they wanted so I can’t see them giving this up and bringing out something radically different. It wasn’t that long ago that people were saying they should just drop out of of producing hardware and instead just bring their games to other platforms. They didn’t, they produced something that the mass market understands and I can’t see them giving that up now.

Re: Random: Masahiro Sakurai Says He Prefers To Buy Video Games Digitally

cra1g0s

I'm on the fence because I've noticed that some of my DS games no longer work and require the exposed contacts to be carefully cleaned, that's not an issue with digital. Also, with my PS4 & PS5 I can play a digital PS4 game on both consoles. If Nintendo allowed me to buy a title on one platform, to then use on another (like Sony does) then I'd be digital all the way. As it stands I mix and match my approach, digital (often too expensive for the physical version) VC games for my 3DS and Wii U, but I prefer to buy physical for more recent games.

Re: Best Of 2022: After 10 Years I Finally Got A Wii U, Here’s What I Thought

cra1g0s

@OrtadragoonX I thought the same with the Wii U and PS4, okay, it wasn't portable but it plugged the gap with quality Nintendo titles. As for the Switch, I've never jumped on board as certainly initially, most of the great games were Wii U ports. At some point I'll get on board with the Switch, it's just a question of when and what might be on the horizon for a new hardware iteration but that doesn't seem likely when the current model is doing so well.

Re: Random: Turns Out You Can Make The GameCube's Game Boy Player A Lot Better

cra1g0s

@Sinton Exactly, I was in two minds whether I should get a Gameboy Player, all I heard was positive and I didn't realise that visually it was so compromised with input lag to boot. I watched Jon's video and so I'd need to buy the device (at least we don't need the disc so should save a few bob) then mod my GC and jump through a ton of hoops with Swiss and other downloads to get all this to work.

Or I buy the M2 emulated games for my Wii U and just enjoy playing the games that I can easily download for a very small price from the eShop. Thanks Jon, great to see folks who are willing to do this but I'm happy playing GBA games using my Wii U.

Re: Nintendo Launches Huge Switch eShop Sale, Up to 75% Off 1000+ Games (Europe)

cra1g0s

I'm a bit confused, but as a Wii U and 3DS owner can I still load up my Nintendo account with an eShop card on the Nintendo eShop web site (just like I did before and do now with a credit card) and spend the funds on Wii U and 3DS games because I assume I can.

I have bunch of gold coins that I'm unable to spend on Wii U or 3DS games, it's like Nintendo want me to buy a Switch!!!

Re: Wii U Receives Its First System Update Of 2022, Here's What's Included

cra1g0s

@rockodoodle Which pinball games do you play? I recently downloaded Pinball Pulse: The Ancients Beckon on 3DS (DSiWare) and I’m very impressed. I was looking at Devil’s Crush on TurboGrafx Virtual Console but was not convinced from the videos I’ve watched. I’ve also looked at Gameboy pinball games too but I felt Pinball Bulse actually going plays like pinball.

Re: 20th Super Mario Kart Championships Start Their Engines On Twitch Today

cra1g0s

@Fizza I'm of the opposite opinion, Super Mario Kart requires such precise controls, I was obsessed with shaving a hundredth of a second off my Ghost Valley 2 time (with Koopa) and I still go back to it today and try to do the same.

I actually met Sami Cetin a few years ago at a NintendoLife event at the Cambridge Computing Centre where I told him what my time was, he thought it was a good time but after 3 or 4 attempts he had my lap time beat. That was cool.

Re: Random: Masahiro Sakurai Reminds Nintendo Fans About 3DS & Wii U eShop Closure Dates

cra1g0s

I’ve downloaded pretty much everything that I wanted for the Wii U, pretty much all the GBA games that are noteworthy as well as a bunch of SNES games that I’ve always wanted plus some indie titles like Affordable Space Adventures and plenty of others. My 3DS saw an influx of puzzle games, the BoxBoy and Pushmo series but I went down a DSi rabbit hole to get the Art Style games I wanted plus a bunch by Dylan Cuthbert’s studio. All I’m waiting for now is a Level 5 sale, Crimson Shroud, Friday Monsters, Liberation Maiden etc but I can’t see a sale really happening.

My physical collection of 3DS and Wii U games plus my digital collection has basically stopped me buying a Switch and I’ve become more interested in retro gaming and indie titles.

There’s so much for everyone but still plenty of time to get what you need.

Re: Random: Sorry GameCube, LeBron James Likes The Nintendo 64 More

cra1g0s

@liveswired I’ve been playing MK quite a bit recently on my original SNES and I just prefer the fact that it handles like a go-kart, the slippery nature of the handling and unforgiving corners while you try to take a hundredth of a second off your fastest lap time. Maybe there is an aspect of nostalgia but to me, it’s fast and demanding while the N64 version was slow and laborious.

Just my opinion, but I try to be objective while playing other versions and fun as they may be, they’re just not as challenging technically.

13:57 Ghost Valley 2, Koopa.

Re: Random: Sorry GameCube, LeBron James Likes The Nintendo 64 More

cra1g0s

I struggle with the N64, really wanted it to be a success and when I saw Mario64 for the first time in Blackpool on a display upstairs in HMV that could only output the image in black and white (I think they got hold of a Japanese console prior to release), my mouth was agape. But with the arrival of the PS1 and Ridge Racer and the whole Squaresoft / cartridge debate, we could only hope that Rare would come to to the rescue, which they often did. I still have my GameCube and N64 and I look at the GC library and it's just better than the N64's with much better visuals. N64 was a necessary step on the road but project reality it was not unfortunately, and don't get me started on MK64, rubbish in comparison to the tight handling of the original.

Oh, if anyone would be willing to sell me a Game Boy Player just to stop me endlessly using every filter I can on FB marketplace multiple times a day, then I'd very much appreciate it

Re: Deals: Nintendo Switch Upcoming Goodies For March And April

cra1g0s

@Rman12 Well said, agree with every point. Also, I made a conscious decision to invest in the Wii U because I knew the library of games was (and is) excellent. I've added to this with indie games too and feel I own the best games on the system. To jump to the Switch for me is pointless, it really is.

As for noticeable differences - when you play a game, no matter how amazing graphically it is, once you turn the console off, you are left with a feeling of how much you enjoyed the game, not the pixel count or frame rate drops - it's was it fun or not, did I enjoy the experience in some way. If you go to see a movie, it's in 4K or 3D or whatever, ultimately it doesn't matter, you are left with a feeling of how much you enjoyed it. Playing Mario or Splatoon on the Switch (either in portable mode or at home) will not change the experience for me, enough to fork our and invest in a new platform.

I'm done and I'm happy.

ps. no online fees on Wii U either, here's to not embracing 'next gen'..!

Re: Deals: Nintendo Switch Upcoming Goodies For March And April

cra1g0s

@JLPick I'm completely cool with what Nintendo are doing too, the games deserve a wider audience so if it brings them success then I'm happy because a gaming world without Nintendo doesn't bear thinking about (too dramatic probably).

As for PS3 and PS4, it's funny, I've done exactly the same as you and re-bought Last of Us and the Uncharted Collection - the reason I feel okay about doing this though is that I didn't complete these on PS3 and what they offered in terms of the technical changes was enough for me to jump aboard. Also, the PS4 (after some research) has a great library of games that can be had for a very good price - with Nintendo, you are paying premium all the way, or until quite some time has passed an the games are discounted but not to the levels you see for PS4 games.

The Switch games to me may have some slight improvements over the Wii U version, but it's not the same leap in technology that you see from home console to the next home console. The Switch seems to be moderately more powerful than the Wii U and you can now take it on the go. The architecture is different and there will be a lot more to see in the future with whatever software tools Nintendo have magiced up, but for now, it's a year or two (or maybe Xmas with Mario) that I think I can begin to see a noticeable difference from the Wii U library I already own.

Until then, it's Wii U and PS4 games for me.

Re: Deals: Nintendo Switch Upcoming Goodies For March And April

cra1g0s

I look at the release schedule for the Switch and just see re-makes of the Wii U software. It's what we expected, an interesting device comes to market, console power on the go, the wider public never played Lego City on Wii U so Nintendo just port it over and why not? I can't blame Nintendo reusing content, but for Wii U owners, unless I want to play on the go, there's no point me joining this 'gaming revolution' until two years down the line, and then, there will be the inevitable mid-cycle refresh with the Tegra X2 chip and some modifications to fix any these initial shortcomings of the device.

See you in 2019 then, have fun until we meet again.

Re: Video: FIFA 18 Gets Shown Off In Japanese Nintendo Switch Commercial

cra1g0s

@Pod I think I need to adjust my expectations for the type of titles that will come to the Switch and think of it as a mobile device.

What I need to accept is that the Switch can't handle certain types of games that I might want to play, so I have a PS4 for those and a Nintendo console for others.

That's just the mindset you have to accept now, maybe others already have.

Re: Video: FIFA 18 Gets Shown Off In Japanese Nintendo Switch Commercial

cra1g0s

Bye bye Nintendo, you had me with the Wii U, I have a nice library of games, invested in the platform with great titles and digital downloads. I have a nice library on the 3DS too (and 2DS) so that's my mobile gaming sorted. I have a PS4 and great games that will not be making it to the Switch at anytime soon.

I'm a big Nintendo fan but this is a mobile device, masquerading as a console that seems only marginally more powerful than a Wii U - great if you want that level of power on the go, but sorry, not for me.

See you in a couple of years and maybe a Tegra chip upgrade, but I've had it with hoping Nintendo console internals are going to provide the same graphical level of games on offer on other consoles. Why, why, why do you insist on limiting the power of your consoles so that 3rd parties are just put off by? I know Nintendo can perform their magic to get the best out of the system, but what about everyone else?

For those who say graphics aren't everything, I agree to an extent, the focus on fun doesn't always need amazing graphics but take the example of ARMS, are you kidding me? I'm currently playing Uncharted 4 and the PS4's power is giving me such a fun experience that this might be the first game I'm so completely engaged with since Resident Evil 4.

Sorry, Nintendo, I have to say goodbye...for now.

Re: Talking Point: Considering Nintendo's Portable Future

cra1g0s

@Mii_duck very eloquently put, I feel exactly the same, I was lucky enough (I think) to have grown up in Blackpool where I saw new video game cabinets come in, still remember my first Space Invaders...been a gamer ever since, save for the late 80s until the SNES pulled me back in. Now, with a family too, the 3DS is just one of my consoles but I haven't actually played it as much as I thought I would although I've got some great games. I think I need to enjoy the 3DS more if it's the perfect device.

Re: Talking Point: Is the Nintendo Switch a Handheld or Console? Does it Matter?

cra1g0s

It's a (very powerful) handheld that plugs into your TV. Nintendo were always better with their handhelds, they got out of the console game for good with this new hardware, it uses cartridges, it's got more features that allow it to be played on the go, it's a mobile.

If the earlier rumours about the dock and accessories adding more processing power we're true, then I'd say it was a console then, but it's not, it's a mobile device and a pretty expensive one at that.

3rd Party developers are going to bring 'custom experiences' to the Switch, it's never going to contain a fully fledged GTA or a Naughty Dog title, okay, it's got the power to do so but the 3rd Party developers have moved on, their sights are set and they will utilise the processing power of a PS4 and XBox (Pro and Scorpio too) so the Switch is a different proposition of a platform entirely.

I'd still buy it as a 'home console' but I'll be forever thinking it's technically less powerful than Sony and Microsoft offerings, but I also appreciate it's more a hybrid with different playing styles possible, so we're not comparing apples with apples.

Re: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Will Require a 3GB Install on Wii U

cra1g0s

Wii U version for me, not spending an extra £340 for what is essentially the same experience. We can convince ourselves that the differences on the Switch are worth it but the Wii U was what it was originally developed for so that's good enough for me...reminds me of the GC and Wii version of Twilight, in years to come we'll consider the two versions to be virtually identical.

Re: Nintendo Switch Lacks Pack-In Title Because It's $299, Says Reggie Fils-Aime

cra1g0s

It's a ballsy move if they are so confident of the console's success but for the minor cost of providing this as a pack-in game or an actual game card with it pre-installed then I just don't understand the logic.

If it came with a pack-in title then families would have all they need in one box to get up and running to experience the Switch and its unique features. By not providing such a title then you are essentially asking that family to choose their own experience and pay for it on top of the substantial outlay they already have. It's very shortsighted of Nintendo, what are their business analysts thinking?

By the time Christmas comes around then there will be bundles on offer and a possible price reduction to raise the possibility of takeup, so why not include this glorified tech demo now so that customers understand the uniqueness of the system and then they have an incentive to choose their own gaming experiences based on the features they now understand.

It's a decision like this that could be the difference between success and failure, especially at this price.

You have to appear to be fair to your customers and I just don't think Nintendo are in this case, and it could be something they regret.

I'm a loyal Nintendo fan and right now I'm not going to buying day one, it's going to be Christmas before I reconsider investing in a new platform. Now think about the everyday customer, what do you think they are going to do?

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of the Nintendo Switch Presentation?

cra1g0s

@darthstuey I was just going to say, after watching the latest NL video, there are some positives and I nearly pre-ordered from Amazon purely on the basis of 'maybe they will re-adjust the pricing', but that isn't going to happen between now and launch day.

It boils down to having to pay £340+ to play Zelda on Switch, when I have a perfectly good platform to play it on now, so I'm leaving it for now. Let's see what happens closer to Christmas and any bundles on offer, but I also think Mario Odyssey could be delayed, it's certainly possible so let's take a look this time next year and we'll see where we're at.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of the Nintendo Switch Presentation?

cra1g0s

I'm sorry, but I have to say this is not good - £280 for a console, expensive accessories (£65 for a Pro and £75 for a new Joy-Con..!!) and £60 for Zelda BOTW (listed on Amazon now) whereas it's £40 on Wii U, what were Nintendo thinking!??!

I made an investment with the Wii U, it has a great library of games, backwards compatible and (for the moment) free to get online, why would I move to the Switch right now? MK8 and Splatoon I already have, ditto for Xenobalde - no sign of a new Metroid (what have Retro Studios been doing?!) and just like we thought, no 3rd party support in terms of a GTA or an Uncharted (we didn't expect that anyway, but you can hope).

There is no way I'm biting until it's £200 with a pack-in AAA Nintendo 1st party title, what the hell happened?!? I was pretty positive the first 10 mins of the presentation but then it slipped up, where was Miyamoto in all of this too, ah well, let's just see what happens now.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Will Rely on Switch Word of Mouth Due to Strange Presentation Timing

cra1g0s

I was quite excited about the Switch, more so concerning it's graphics abilities to it being a home and portable device.

Do we really think gamers are going to want to take their precious console out and about? I know it makes sense for Nintendo to have their Dev teams develop games for one platform, I get that, but is it what the market wants?

I like having a portable device that feels a bit more rugged to take out and about, but I want my home console to be exactly that. That may not be the same for a lot of folks, but I don't commute, I don't have a dog so I'll not be taking this device to the park and I don't have lots of 20-something female friends who I hang out on rooftops with, that could be fun though..!

Anyway, what's going to happen if I were a commuter and I was to leave my Switch on the train, then what? I hope there's some thought put into the idea of replacement screen units.

Re: Say Hello to the Nintendo Switch, a New Concept for Gaming

cra1g0s

Damn you Nintendo for being so innovative and awesome - perfectly executed reveal that means we understand it from the off, first and probably most important obstacle overcome.

Now for the details, like the base unit must add additional processing power or graphical capabilities, right?

Re: Feature: NES Mini Classics - Donkey Kong

cra1g0s

Hi everyone, I need some help here. I remember on the first stage of the arcade version of Donkey Kong, at the very beginning you could run to the right and climb the first ladder, but when you got to the top of the ladder, you could tap the joystick (once, or was it twice) so Mario still had his back to you. Then, you jump to the right and if you were lucky, instead of Mario ending up in a heap and dying, he literally traveled through the screen and you completed the stage - you were then on the second stage.

We used to call this 'jumping through' but I've never seen any reference to this online at all, but I promise you in some versions it did work.

I grew up in Blackpool in the 70s & 80s so spent a lot of time in arcades
